GPRS not always on with 1.72 - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 ROM Development

Hi folks:
In my upgrade to 1.72 on my MDA2, I lost the always on GPRS, i.e., the GPRS connection gets turned off when I turn off the MDA2.
I remember there was a nice little add-on to take care of this, but cannot quite remember where to look for it.
Any clues are appreciated.

GPRS Problem on T-Mobile

Hiya,
Ive unlocked my O2 XDA and started using my T-Mobile sim card with it as I get a great GPRS deal with it. The problem is that with O2 it connects to GPRS straight away and have no problems with it. But with T-mobile, its all over the place, most of the time it doesnt connect and when i'm searching on the web it only displays pocket pc friendly pages or disconnects within a few minutes. Not like the O2 one, which seemed so stable. Could it be something in the settings as I set them up manually? I could do with get it up and running as it will save me loads of cash. I'd appreciate any help you can give. I'm using the WM2003 which I got from the ROM kitchen, which I lurve.
Thanks in advance.
Chris
If it makes you feel any better, my T-Mobile GPRS service sucks with both the T-Mobile ROM and WM2003. It just sucks. I am currently using the radio ROM 6.18. I do not know if 6.24 is any better.
Hi! Just to let you know that I took the plunge and upgraded my Radio stack to 6.24 on my T-Mobile device. It works much better for me! I now have "always on". Now, I'm not saying the "speed" is any faster but at least it now stays "connected" even when it is turned off.. I am using it with WM2003. I have not upgraded to the latest T-Mobile version.
So you see no improvement in the speed of downloading or connecting in the first place? Is the only improvement just the constant connection?
It connects very fast to the network but the speed is still pretty slow on most searches and downloads. Having said that, I am very happy now that it stays connected all the time (albeit, as long as I am in an area of coverage) and does not drop out when I have a call come in or the unit it self powers off the screen. I will be one of the 1st, I am sure, to buy one of the new XDA II's when available, if for no other reason than to see if WM2003 works better with that unit than with the current XDA version.
I looked forward to see how the unit works with Wi-Fi at my local coffee shop..

The always on connection is a big deal to me.
I usually go out with 3 connections open:
-Ezwap pointing to a yahoo wap page of market indices
-My brokage software open to my fav stocks
-PIE pointing to a news site, forum or my blog.
All these on pause mode as we pay by the Kb here.
I will refresh each of these pages as and when needed
throughout the day.
The best is calls can still come in AND your battery
will last the day. Try that with WiFi!
Only wish Xda2 will have Class A? gprs where you
can talk and surf at the same time.

Won't reconnect after losing signal

My XDA phone seems to work just dandy...as long as it doesn't lose connection. If this happens I invariably have to switch the phone off and then on (not the whole xda) for it to pick up the signal. Sometimes when I do this it jumps up to full strength so it's certainly not signal problems.
Is there same way to force a signal search without turning the phone off? It's very annoying as I miss calls because of this assuming i'm connected when in an area with good signal (central london say - no i'm NOT in the tube!)
Thanks for any help here.
Daniel
You may want to upgrade the phone software. I used to have this problem on older RSU versions, and it disappeared somewhere along the road. 4.21 seems fine.
(The XDA will never be the phone for rural environments though. Radio reception just doesn't compare to e.g. the better Nokias..)
Thanks kindly for your reply.
ROM Version: 3.17.03 ENG
Rom Date: 05/15/03
Radio Version: 4.21.00
Protocol Version: 32S54
Anything wrong there? Would it be worth reinstalling the radio stack perhaps?
Do any of you XDA pro's know if there is actually a function to force a re-scan of frequencies to find a connection? How difficult would it be to write one as I could see it being incredibly useful even for people who's phones DO reconnect themselves (After a while).
Best regards,
Daniel
Hi Daniel, I have the same problem as do 54 of my colleagues. I have just had to rollout these XDA's out to my colleagues as part of a real time
information project and all have the radio stack 4.21 installed. If the guys are in a dead phone area in excess of 30 mins, it will never find the network again until we do a POR. I guess that the firmware either has a retry limit then gives up or it is done by time then gives up. I sure would like to see if this can be resolved?
Yep, I too have the same problem!!
And it's a pain in the arse! Anyone have any ideas? I have the latest firmware, radio stack etc from o2 UK.
Any of you technical sort of people know?
What we need are two little apps...
1. An app that will run the "reconnection" process without requiring the pin number to be re-entered.
2. a "cron" type program that will run it every 30 mins.
But I'm dammed if I have a clue how to do that!! =) Techy types...heeelllppp!!!
I'm in asia and running the same 4.21 have the same problem using the 900 band but with the 1800 frequency it's ok.
I'm in Argentina (GSM 900-1900), same problem. Tried different PPC versions / Radio Stack versions. Now it is:
ROM version A.30.09 ENG
ROM date: 01/01/04
Radio version: 6.24.00
Protocol version 324e4
(Hardware model PW10B1)
I hate going somewhere and when I get there check the green light just to see if it blinks and it doesn't! And when I turn on flight mode and then off, I get a strong signal. I can't have a phone like that! Why it doesn't check for signal automatically???
A solution would be to have a program turn on the PDA with the backlight off (to keep battery life) at predefined intervals, check the signal and if it is OK turn off the phone but if it is on No Signal "tap" on the signal icon, then on Turn On Flight mode, then repeat. That would be a quick and dirty solution. I would love to implement it but I don't have the resources (you can read programming knowledge) to do it.
Kind regards,
Marton
I also have this problem (in australia) but only noticed it since upgrading to the latest firmware. Hopefully when they do their next release they correct the problem agian.
If you happen to find a revision that doesn't have this problem, please let me know!!! Thanks!!
Marton
What happens when you try to make a call after you have lost the signal, and are back in an area with signal?
I did have the same problem- every time I came out of the underground.
It would often say 'Unable to make the call' etc.
But then i found that sometimes, if I called voicemail, the phone would pause for 30 seconds, then suddenly re-aquire the signal.
This seems to work most of the time now.
When I turn it on, the signal icon starts "Searching" and the three dots go blinking endless without getting the signal. If I turn on flight mode on and off, signal comes in normally. It is very strange but it seems too many people has this problem and it's sad that there's no aparent solution
Marton
Yup. But i found making a call (e.g. to voicemail) even when it shows 'no signal' did force it to start searching for a signal, although it freezes for 30 seconds.
OK, but I have no problems with turning on and off flight mode to get the signal back to make calls. The problem is that the phone can't receive calls.....
This sux
I was kinda hoping I was the only person with this problem, or that I'd find sum1 else had the same problem & knew how 2 fix it... I just purchased a Wallaby on eBay, but am becoming EXTREMELY frustrated with the lack of reception (0-1 bars connecting to Optus PrePaid within Australia) and when it frequently loses the signal all 2gether, I have 2 reset the phone 2 get it 2 pick it up again. VERY annoying. If ne1 knows of nething that might help (I no very little about all this ROM/radio stack stuff) then please, let us know!
Hello,
How are you?
I also have this singnal problem.
Has anyone found a solution for this?
I am running radio 4.21 in France.
Does anyone know if there is a later version of the radio stack?
thanks for advice,
monza

Phone Loses Connection to Service

This has started to happen recently. I am with AT&T Wireless in Brooklyn, NY. The phone used to carry the signal around almost the whole day and never lose it, but these days if I leave it alone for a while and come back it may say "no service" or "searching..." . If I do a soft reset it may find the signal, or if I turn wireless off and then on (which doesn't always respond, by the way -- on my phone it's called "Turn on Flight Mode". Is that what it's supposed to be called?)
I got this phone two months ago and I am extremely thrilled with it. It's a phone, pocket pc and (video!) camera in one. Sometimes it can achieve great clarity on conversations.
I wish someone can help me out though with some advice or information on upgrading the phone. I have the following questions:
1) What GSM frequencies does this phone use? Can I make it work with AT&T's 850 band? Is anyone familiar with making this phone work better with AT&T wireless?
2) What are some of the icons I see on the top, such as the G in a square? On my old phone that used to mean GPRS connection (i.e. internet/wap). I don't know how to control these things. To turn wireless off, I click a link that says "Turn on flight mode."
3) Finally, what can I do to stop losing the signal?? I tried putting manual selection of the AT&T Wireless network on, and it didn't improve things -- the phone still lost the connection. Once it had the connection thoguh, it didn't drop it -- I don't know why the connection gets lost.
Thanks a bunch for any advice and info,
Greg
Egreg,
I have similar problems. My provider uses GSM 1900 & 850.
1) It uses GSM 900/1800/1900. Unfortunately doesn't have an 850 radio; which is really bad, they should have made it a Quad Band for the price we pay for it. GSM 1900 is really terrible in buildings etc.
2) G Means the radio has negotiated GPRS availability.
3) I've gotten better results with signal locking on by following this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7619&highlight=signal
Download the application and set it to "Search GPRS on start GPRS connection". That way it doesn't have to negotiate for GPRS unless you actually want to use it (helps to establish signal lock much better as there is less protocol overhead).
Also now, I'm using Radio Version 1.06 & 1.08 as they seem to reconnect much better than 1.14.
Hope this helps.. Mine is performing much better now, not perfect, but not as annoying.
Thanks. I'll download the GPRS tweak program. Will that alone help the situation a bit? All I need is the voice capability, I won't use GPRS, only the GSM voice -- for internet browsing I may get a WiFi SDIO card from SanDisk.
I thought that changing to some other Radio software would help, but I heard on this site that changing the OS is risky. Can you tell me what I could do to get some a better connection, perhaps guide me through installing a correct version of Radio?
I haven't had this phone for very long, so I'm unsure if I should attempt to upgrade/downgrade.
-Greg
Greg,
I think the tweak program will help things a bit.. As I mentioned I am able to get signal seemingly quicker when I have it set...
I was pretty paranoid about OS upgrades, but I've gone through about 4 versions so far. This week is the first time I ventured out to use a different radio version than what comes with the upgrade.
Try the tweak and see how things go for a while, and then make your decision to upgrade your ROM...

To the softbank users, with good battery..How'd you do it?

...how did you freaking do it? I have tried everything from the 1.47 to the 1.54 and still nothing. I am living in Japan using the Cingular/AT&T 8525 and am always ...constantly connected to the 3G( i always have either the "3g" or "H" symbol showing. Is there some other trick i can do to get my battery to last me through the day? I cant use my phone on the weekends cause of this issue...I will be away from a usb port for too long lol.
I hear there is GPRS network in Japan...is there a way you guys are connecting to that instead when the phone is idle to conserve battery life.
The thing I dont get is there HAS to be a way to fix this because my non PDA phone (issued to me by softbank) has great battery life and it is using the 3G network as well. It must be using some other kind of band or something to preserve its life. I hate having to switch to my crappy phone on the weekends because of battery life...please help me out guys. Thanks.
P.S. I owe this site so much ...as it is because of this site I am able to even use my phone here. THx in advance.
phone: cingular 8525
rom: black satin
radio: 1.54.07.00
(got mms, live ...and all the other stuff working thx to u all..just the battery is left)
not a softbank user, but you can try and disable 3g using a comm managers that has the 3g button.
like this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320239
see post #24 for the one with a 3g button.
you other option would be to get an extended battery, see the threads in the accessories subforum
I was using the Black Satin ROM for awhile and my battery life was really short. Same thing with K's Roms. They both ran nice and fast, but the battery was almost dead before I left work.
i switched to the latest HTC WWE Rom. Battery life was instantly better. Lasts almost 2 days. I have a Softbank X01HT in the US and connect to AT&T 3G service. I get corporate email, so Active Sync is constantly running too.
hmm interesting suggestions I'll have to try them (yes the xtended battery one too) However, are you connected to the 3g network constantly..cause I am, and I'm almost certain that is what the culprit is. I am just baffled how other phones here manage last long here, I know I am doing something wrong in my connection settings. If i turn 3g off, phone can no longer recieve calls and basically stops being a phone. Dayum.

ROGERS + 7500 3G/HSDPA problems

Hello,
Hoping to get some advice here. Currently on Sogarth Base Vanilla Rom running radio 1.58 on Rogers with the new 6GB data plan. Couldn't get the 3g and H to show up until I configured the Band settings to Auto (another tip i got from these forums). This changes the provider name to "ROGERS UMTS". At this point, I could get 3g + H downloads, although it still felt a bit slow. Unfortunately, my 7500 will no longer hold any cell calls. All outgoing fails, and incoming only lasts 1-2 minutes. These are tests throughout the city(GTA).
Wife's phone (Tytn II) is working great at 3G + H using stock rom.
The only way I can get good cell reception again is if I manually tune the Band settings to GSM & GSM (1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850). Of course, I can never get any type of speed over Edge. The provider name changes to just ROGERS, which is the same provider name that the Tytn II gets.
Anyone have any words of advice or tips that I can try? Rogers won't help because it's an unsupported phone. Data reception is not an issue because the Tytn II gets full 3G/H. I'm hoping to finally unleash the power of this phone.
I'm wondering if it makes sense to downgrade to 1.57. I never tried this version with the data plan, because I only just recently got it. Hoping some people may have some telling experiences.
Thanks in advance,
achok.
Just as an update, reflashed to 1.57 radio with no improvement.
any other athena + rogers users here?
did you try the 3G hack?
download the nice utility from this forum
it was called something super mobile hack
it lets you customize sooooo much stuff of the phone inside and out
after i enabled it, mine always gets the best stuff 3G and HDPDA speed
which was awesome
if i didn't enable it, it was always on EDGE, and very few times on 3G
HOWEVER!!!!!!
i think i know why HTC did not turn that on by default
because whenever i keep 3G & HDPDA on all the time
it drains battery real fast
is worse than using WI FI all day long
so what i do now, is to keep it on EDGE for the automated downloads from programs Weather, TomTom, Stock, push email, etc
but when i SURF THE WEB, i enable 3G, and ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM like the commercial
is a quick ON OFF thing in the COMM Manager.
and when i'm done looking up stuff on the WEB, i turn it back to EDGE mode
to save battery
Don't know why you need to turn it off, I keep H on all the time and at the end of a low-useage day I'm still in the mid-80's on my battery. Yes, if I start surfing heavily the battery goes down much faster, but not from background push/pulls.
i do surf browse de web quite a bit
lots of download, some uploads
streaming videos
and i use VNC and remote deskop quite a lot for work / home stuff, meanwhile on the road.
this phone is the best thing every.
now i can literally work from any where, and people will still think i'm in the office
as long as i have good signal that is
Best thing with the Advantage is...... OUR BATTERY LAST SOOOOO LONNNNNNNNNG compare to a LAPTOP of any size, doing the same thing
Thanks for the replies and suggestion. I'll try the 3G hack and report back.
Anyway you can report which Radio ROM you are using? I'm still believing that certain Radio ROM's are better suited for the Rogers/Fido 3G network....
...or is the Rogers/3G network just than inconsistent?
Regards,
achok.
as you can see in my siggie it's the X7510 which means it has the stock 1.58 Radio that everyone is upgrading to with the Modded ROMs
and the other thing is, im on FIDO, not Rogers.
but LOL as if that matters anymore, they are both the same company now.
just one has better billing, and Cutomer Service, than the Get Lost actitude from Rogers CS people, and always screwed up and over billed invoices every month....
Folks, just as an update:
I recently upgraded to Michy 4.0 1.2 spl (16mb version) (fantastic ROM by the way...) and stayed with Radio 1.57.
So far all looks to be good, but still need to test over the next few days.
Hopefully, this is a sign that things are finally starting to work the way it's supposed to.
Regards,
Achok
I just upgraded to AP 4.0 Platinum..Everything works fine ( I think ) except when I go to m.youtube.com to watch videos, and streaming media starts, It says "Failed to find network."
Please help!!!
Coz this is the very reason why I upgraded the rom..thinking it would solve the problem..
I'm with Rogers..
I already installed the latest FP7 plugin thingy..
HELP ME!!!!
i cant get my 3G or my HSDPA to work at all. Im using The HTC TOUCH PRO, which i imported on the ROGERS network. Ive been reading these forums and i have no clue as to what radios and rom versions are nor how to even tell what im using. WHOSE THE GENIOUS HERE...HELP ME.. This phones wack unless i get the best out of it...
Htc touch pro
if anyone can email me directly also that would be cool...
