Flaky Flash? - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Recently, my SDcard with the games package from ATT Wireless (Microsoft action pack, or something like that), died a nasty death. I wasn't sure if it was from the card, or from the Wallaby.
So, I went and bought a SD card reader/writer, and I bought a 256mb sdram card. Since then, my 256mb card has died a couple of times.
It seems that sometimes, the wallaby just trashes the SD card. So, I'm forced to keep offline backups of it.
Has anyone run into anything similar?

microSD card beware!

Had to return my 3125 because the microSD cards would become corrupt for no reason. This happened twice. Thank goodness I was able to return the microSD cards as defective. This is what happened: Folders/Files would disappear out of the blue. No programs running, no nothing. Listening to music thru my Motorola Bluetooth transceiver(A2DP is very cool). Shut everything down. A couple hours later, Music folder invisible. It's still there, you just can't see it or access it. Take the card to my PC and it does not recognize the microSD card anymore. Hangs everything up. So, from my phone I delete everything from the microSD card. Check the Properties and it shows there is still a gb of data on the card. Now I'm just pissed, so everything goes back to the store. I still had a few days on Cingular's 30 day return policy (Cingular is great). I read a few other threads where people were havng the same issue. Buyer beware. [Applied the A2DP hack to my 2125 (which is a better phone - better reception, easier to use with one hand, ect...) works great - see http://richtech.wordpress.com/2006/05/11/go-wireless-on-your-cingular-2125/
for instructions. I did NOT upgrade my ROM before performing the modification. I still have ROM version 1.0.9.0 and everything works fine.
could be a microsd card problem
would you please post you microsd make and model?
i am currently using a transcend 1gb (normal speed)
been using it everyday for music(yeah a2dp is great) photos documents .... etc
all is fine .. the normal speed doesn't lags so much like when it was on my ppc
I was using a Sandisk (normal speed) microSD purchased from a Verizon Wireless retail store.
I lost a folder (Application Data/Home) during the night without touching the phone. Had to send it in, and received a brand new one back. I do NOT have a memory card at all!
I too is using a microSD card of Sandisk but it dosnot has ne problem.
there is a similar post on howard forums. I had this same problem happen to me twice. Both times it was a sandisk 1gb card, but one of them was the ULTRA model. There is something frying SD cards...and it's not based on brand. I have the qtek 8500 and it happened

I have read somewhere on these forums that if u let ur device to charge for more than 3-4 hrs or leave it by accessing gprs for some time then the device gets hot and can fry ur sd cards or ne internal chip.
dude... i am having the same problem as you... the funniest part is that my Micro SD goes corrupt every 3rd after the reset of the phone or i uses the handfree kit.... but i am using a Dopod S300... is it really the card problem or the phone? i am still figuring out.. cause each time i take my phone to the shop the Micro SD will just be back to normal after 1 hour... but i am using only 512mb

HOW TO FIX Disappearing SD Cards!

Ever since I upgraded to the new AKU3.3 Cingular roms, I've been having an issue where my 2GB Sandisk MicroSD Card will just 'disappear'. It can take one of two different forms when it disappears:
1) The card looks like it's simply not there. The OS creates another directory on the device itself called "Storage Card". Ejecting the card and reinserting it makes it visible to the device again, but, then the card itself is called, "Storage Card2", with the obvious issues of all links being broken until I manually rename everything to be what it should be.
2) The card is there, and I can navigate the directories, but, there is nothing IN the directores. Removing and re-inserting fixes this, and all my info is there again.
This is getting REALLY annoying, and only happened since the upgrade to the new Cingular rom. Anyone have any ideas of what is causing the problem, and/or how to fix it?
Thanks!
EDIT:
After working at the issue for a while, here is the end results:
Do the following reg. hack (numbers are in DECIMAL! hex equiv. is 0x2004):
[HKLM\System\StorageManager]
"PNPUnloadDelay" = dword:8196
[HKLM\System\StorageManager]
"PNPWaitIODelay" = dword:8196
Additionally, the Kingston 1GB MicroSD Card is *much* better (Japanese made) than the SanDisk or even the Crucial MicroSD (Taiwan).
I had SEVERE issues with the card going missing; changing to the Kingston SD and applying the above fixes made the issue GO AWAY!
Same problem - it is causing lots of probs with apps installed on the card
I had the same problem when I used this rom, I think its a bug, I chnaged to the HTC test rom and did not have any issues.
I think you will have wait until the formal release rom comes directly from AT&T, as you know this site will not have roms from next week
Had that with a cheap card, Changed to Kingston and all is perfect.

I have a SanDisk and it has the same issue. It has issue #2, where the directories are there but no files. It caused my ringtones to go missing. Only since the upgrade to the Cingular AKU 3.3 ROM. Just ANOTHER issue with this ROM.
I have the HTC 3.3 ROM, same prob. 2 situations:
1. card shows gibberish text(signs - not letters)
2. folders are there but no files.
SR always solves the situation.
I just ordered a new Crucial.com MicroSD 1gb memory card. It's smaller than my SanDisk one, but, since I need it to be reliable more than I need it to be big to store music, etc.. I'll take the crucial chip. Hopefully that solves the problem.
I have similar problems, where the card (ExtremeII Sandisk 2GB):
1) disappears, or
2) shows up in the folder tree but reports as having no free space, or
3) becomes temporarily corrupted and hangs the whole system when trying to access it.
Eject/reinsert or soft reset fixes all of these. However, I was having problems 1) and 3) on the old ROM too, and used to see similar problems on my old Axim X50v.
You 're not alone Test ROM 2.05.255.1 - Radio 1.34 - AKU 3.3
Has the same effects
PLUS sometimes the hard Buttons doen't seem to respond after some amount of time, GEESH!!!

I am seeing the same thing with 2GB Sandisk card.
I got totally fed up with my SanDisk 2GB SD Card and did a backup and a reformat. However, this time I formatted it as FAT32; it seemed to make a difference. It seems to be a LITTLE more stable, and a LITTLE better at keeping the information; however, there is DEFINATELY a bug in this rom... I wish there was some way to track it down and squash it. It's probably a stupid registry hack... <sigh>
kinda off topic, kinda not just thought i'd throw this in. 2 gb sandisk microsd cards are on sale at compusa this week for 40 bucks if anyone's looking to get one.
Seeing this also, and its irritating me as well. If i run an app from the SD card, and the card goes to lunch as described, my device locks up.
scandisk?
I have a 2gb sandisk and just loaded cingular 2.06.
I DON'T have this problem yet, but I had lots of issues with my 1.34 load hanging due to storage card issues. I have gotten in the habit of putting it in a card reader periodically and running scandisk with all options checked under xp, then defrag. almost every time there are found.000 directories. once it was 100mb worth of dead files.
this seems to help for a while.
has anyone else tried running scandisk when this happens?
wes
So far my 1GB MicroSD from Crucial is working MUCH better! No problems so far. I'm thinking the SanDisk 2GB just has issues generally...
Those who aren't having problems, are you using SanDisk? Or, did you use a different chip? Or, is it that the 2GB is causing the issues?
I spoke too soon. It's exhibiting the same problems, although, not as badly as the sandisk.
All the directories were there, just none of the files. Remove and reinsert, and it's all good again.
This is nuts.... This is a BIG bug...
I think I may have found something. Can someone with the ORIGINAL Cingular rom tell me what they have in their registry at the following key? Exporting the entire thing would be even better!
HKLM\System\StorageManager
Specifically, I want to know what the PNPUnloadDelay is, and the PNPWaitIODelay is.... I'd LOVE the export of the entire key though, but, I'll take those two keys too
Thanks!
Same here... AKU 3.3 and 2gb Sandisk:
Sometimes the card is gone, but I don't get the Storagecard2 when reinserting.. it just pops back as StorageCard and works again. (so the stupid camera asks every time I want to take a pic if I want to use the storagecard)
Sometimes when I access the StorageCard from my PC, I see the directories in the root, but when I try to access them activesync or TotalCommander just hangs..
and just random hangups of the complete OS, SR fixes everything... *sigh* feels like windows 98
Well until I came across this thread, I thought it was just me. This issue is annoying. I'm getting the second issue where the card is there but the folders are empty.
I really hope a fix is found.
Pete
Just wanted to add my experience to the mix. Same problem here.
HTC Test AKU 3.3 ROM, running on a Dopod 838 Pro. 2GB Sandisk minisd card. The card disappears after a while, causing lockups.

SD card not reading with new battery

So I recently replaced the battery in my 8125, and my 4gb mini-sd card promptly stopped being read.
It worked before, and now it doesn't - the device does not even recognize that it is inserted.
I don't have a clue why, or how to even begin fixing it.
Anyone?~

[Q] Weird SD card behavior

I have an 8GB SD card in my Photon that used to show up just fine, but now the contents are no longer accessible. Under file manager, it says no SD card is present. But I also use App2SD and all the apps (games mostly) that I had moved over to it are still working. I can launch those games just fine and even in the App2SD app, it shows my SD card (total space and used space) along with all the apps on it.
When I take this same SD card out and plug it into my Win7 PC, all the old contents are still there (pictures, music, videos). I can view/listen to them just fine, so the SD card is good.
So I'm not sure wtf is going on. The only thing that I did that may have caused this was installing QuickPic. When I first launched it, it tried to do an index of all my content on the SD card. But now when I launch it, it says no SD card is present. I've rebooted several times, powered off/on, reseated the SD card, but the end result is the same.
Anyone have a clue on what I should do (short of formatting starting over)?
In file manager are you browsing to /mnt/sdcard-ext ?
I was able to browse there under QQPlayer, but it was empty. For File manager, I simply select SD Card (choices are Internal Phone Storage, SD card, Shard folders) and it says "Please insert memory card". But for further testing, I installed Zedge and moved it over to the SD card with App2SD. It still allowed me to do that and the app still worked.
Lemme guess....el cheapo no-name branded micro sd card ?
Wintec or some other crap ?
Time to go buy another....this one is toast with no butter

Keep guessing, it's a Sandisk. And like I said in the OP, it works fine in the PC and in the Photon, as far as App2SD is concerned, just not with the rest of the phone.

And you think it's a bad card exactly how? Are you reading my posts or just randomly responding with crap? If the best of your troubleshooting skills is to replace the suspect part, then point taken. However, I disagree.
So for other folks on the forum that have some basic troubleshooting skills, here's something else I've done to test. I've placed the SD card back into my old HTC Eris and the card works fine in there as well. So my guess is that the issue is somewhere in my Photon. Just not sure if it's the hardware or software.
Then live with a bad card
I have had issues with my sdcard, but not to the extent you seem to have. I swapped the Radioshack Photon for a Best Buy Photon last night to get a hunski back and backed all my apps up with astro. The only thing my new Photon recognizes are the pictures I had from the old Photon. My wallpapers, ringtones, apps, etc... are not seen by new one and Astro does not find any backed up apps. AND its a new 8gb ScanDisk. Weird.
Finally did a factory reset on my phone but still kept getting the same behavior. Called up Sprint, got a support ticket number and walked into a Sprint store for them to test it further. 2 other known good SD cards were failing to mount on my phone. Tried them on another new Photon and they worked, including mine. Luckily, I was within the 30 days period and was able to simply get my phone swapped out. POS Motorola...

How can you *accidentally* destroy a Micro SD Card?

I took my Droid Razr Maxx to a local repair shop to replace its broken screen ($279 + tax = ouch). After I left the store, I noticed that my 32gb Micro SD card was blank. I thought this was weird, but planned to just re-fill it with my music, etc., when I got home. However, I can't get it to read, much less format. I've tried two PCs (Win XP and Win 7 64bit). I've tried three SD card readers on both PCs. To be sure that the readers are working, I've tried them successfully in on both PCS with an old 2gb Micro SD card, so it's not the readers or the computers. I've also tried to format the 32gb card using the Razr itself (it sees the blank card... I tell phone to format it... nothing seems to happen... lather, rinse, repeat), but even after doing so, there's a status bar message that the SD card is "blank" or "has an unsupported filed system." When I try to copy a file from internal memory to the 32gb card using the Razr, it fails. When I cable my Razr to my PC it sees the SD Card slot as empty (if I try to copy something there, Windows says "insert disk"). The SD Card slot on the Razr is still functional, because my old 2gb card works just fine when installed in the Razr. My Razr is running Stock ICS 4.0.4, but is rooted.
Question -- Assuming that this is indeed the same 32gb card that was in my phone when I brought it in for repair, what could the repair shop have accidentally done to it that would cause it to stop functioning?
Either the shop broke it or they swapped it. I guess its the former, because surely the tech who did it would be risking his job if caught. Who wants to get fired over a $30 memory card. But I can't imagine what the tech could have done accidentally that could kill it.

Either a long exposition to sun/ magnetics/ dust// .etc can damage a memory. (in fact these artifacts are kinda sensitive)
Or it can just expire. A repair could work if it was at least being recognized by pc or card readers. But by your relate it'll not work anymore.
Cheers
I've seen microSD card die for no apparent reason. It actually happened to the 16GB card that was in my RAZR when I got it. I took the card out to give it to the original owner, and nothing - it was just dead.

I will need to try this!
Well... sorry for necro bumping this, but seeing as Micro SD's are a topic even nowadays, I'll ad my 2 cts.
My micro SD got partially damaged when I had too many programs on my Android Phone access it at the same time (Power Amp, OBB on SD, Galerie, Backup Program).
However in my case it was a fun kind of damage done:
- The data on the Disk was still readable, and I could recover most of it to a 32 GiB card (save for 2 unimportant image files).
The fun part is:
I can't format the disk, it'll always show the same content / files /size used if I plug it in again.
Deleting files does the same. Etched for infinity xD.
I'll try the magnet trick, as I wouldn't want anyone to read the card when I throw it away.
