Hi all,
A quick question (I am new to PPC world). Does anyone know of external memory devices which work through the mini-USB port? Sorry if it's been answered before. Many thanks.

Hey All:
I was on the pdaPhone Home forum
( http://pdaphonehome.com/forums ) and I found this reply to a post I had made about the SD slot. It sounds like a challenge to the XDA developers to me! If anyone can do anything, it is you guys!!!
Here it is:
[The SD slot is]
more than you think it is. [I am]
new to this board, but I can tell you two things I know for certain.
One, the SD slot is not SD/IO directly, however.....
Viewtake does offer a camera than plugs into the SD slot of these phones and works very well. Takes decent pictures, with several options of picture size and type, will take 8fps video, and comes with a nice software suite. I know because I have one. Anyone who would like pics of or from it just need to ask.
Two, I happen to be a security systems installer (actual Security systems, not software or computer based) and one of the places I installed a system, I happen to get the chance to speak with someone who is part of the top eschelon of the windows mobile solutions development team. This person seemed to enjoy chatting with me about the OS and the products. In talking about the PPC PE I was told that, although nothing could be confirmed (non-disclosure agreements), that I would be VERY surprised what the SD slot on the PPC PE was capable of. I do believe that more can be done with it than is thought. Has ANYONE actually tried the install of any SD/IO devices like a Bluetooth or 802.11b SD Card?
if i were you i'd try to do a search on the subject
and you'll get plenty of useful posts
also there are many posts about cams which works for xda in the Accessories forum
of cause it's possible to make many many things which today needs sdio using just a normal sd connector
a sd connector works for ram
if a sd card have some flash apart from the stuff which take care of it's function
and both the device and the sd's non mem part have access to that mem
they can communicate writing in some files in the mem part of the sdcard
but since pretty much all new devices today come with SD IO
i doubt there is a big market for those devices which is also more complex to make then a normal SDIO which is a descriped std
we have seen bluetooth headsets which works for xda
but it's a bit of a cheat since it goes into the headset connector
and just make the analog signal bluetooth to the headset
this mean you cant use anything else then the headset
pretty much everything is possible but when there is lots of work involved and not a pile of coins in the end people dont really line up to get involved
Easily done withour SD/IO
A camera for xda could easily be developed without requiring anything special from the SD slot.
If the camera were fully self contained with the ability to write to flash mem that is also addressible from the device as a standard SD card would be... all the camera is doing is saving to sd, and the xda is reading from sd the files that the camera saved.
Pretty simple... the tricks are on the camera, not the xda.

I´ve it !
Hello,
all the story´s about a Com for a XDA / MDA & Siemens SX56 are true !
I must know it, because i sell the Cam´s

Oh great and wise of you out there, a question,
Just like you can expand your number of USB ports on a PC by using a hub is it possible to expand your number of SDIO slots on your Hima (as per the idea of internal dual SIM holders)?
I came across this "mod" where somebody has obviously tried to double up on slots.
Would the concept work for the Hima or as per dual SIM holders does anyone know if there is a product out there already (failled to find on by googling).
FYI I'd love to add WIFI, Storage and GPS to my Hima but don't really want to be forever swapping cards or having combo cards wifi/storage where I'd be stuck once say storage ran out).It would be great to have my current 1G SD storage side by side with a new wifi card both flat against the back of the hima (inside or out space allowing) then I could pop the GPS SD into the top since that's the bulky one).
Thoughts/ insights much appreciated.

PS posted this over in buzzdev too and the feedback seemed to be positive on the theory but nothing re a product out there already or anybody else trying the same thing.
xda's cant host other usb devices

Hi Rudegar,
Thanks for the reply but I think you miss understand me. did you follow the link embedded in the "mod" text in my post above?
I'm not wanting to connect USB devices to my Hima. Instead I'm wanting to connect multiple SDIO cards at the same time (e.g. Wifi, Memory and GPS). The link I supplied showed how this was done on another pda via an aweful hack of the hardware. It seemed to work (albeit messy and probably not very robust) so I'm trying to see if there is a product or procedure out there which will work for our Hima's.
Suggestions so far have been to use a miniSD adapter to help bring the SDIO contacts out from inside the Hima (hnce hosting a splitter connection), strip a muliple card reader to donate card hardware or try to utilise the other I/O connections that the backpack uses. All of this is beyond my scope so I'm seeing if anyone else has contemplated adding more than 1 SDIO card to their hima simultaneously.
My analogy was to refer to a PC's ability with only one USB port to use multiple USB devices simultaneously via a USB hub. I'm not looking to attached USB devices to my Hima.
Any thoughts on the multi-SDIO idea?

any luck yet?
Hi Mallow,
I understand your question and I am also looking for a way to extend the number of sdio slots on my Acer N35. About a year ago I found such an sdio hub. Unfortunately I cannot find it anymore.
I hope you found a solution. I am very interested.

Steve.

Hi guys!
Would anyone know of a way to have an iPod unit connect to an O2 Xda II and have it work like an external hard drive? I was thinking maybe through the use a USB cable. If this is feasible, the question is how? And, do you guys know of anyone who can do it? Since the O2's memory is what it is, and "expanding" the memory pretty much means getting more and larger SD cards.
However, if this can be worked out then the iPod provides the O2 awesome storage space.
Thanks!
no the usb on himalaya is slave only, other usb cable hosts can access the pda but it cant access other slaves.
USB Cable Slave

Thanks Rudegar.
Has anyone seen this thread in the standard android forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807
I am wondering if this could help us for our SD Card and USB Slot. Has anyone tried this or pondered the thought?
I guess I could be the guinea pig.
Edit: wow... Nevermind I see multiple ROMs cited increased SD Card Speeds. So I guess this has been implemented. Anything similar for USB, I wonder.
Is there a way to make the atrix host a usb drive as external storage?
I saw some threads here and there about it on other phones.
I know it may sound retarded but it would be so nice to be able to do this.As far as hardware I think we can do this maybe just drivers or an app can help us achieve this or maybe we have something like this already.....
