Hey All:
I was on the pdaPhone Home forum
( http://pdaphonehome.com/forums ) and I found this reply to a post I had made about the SD slot. It sounds like a challenge to the XDA developers to me! If anyone can do anything, it is you guys!!!
Here it is:
[The SD slot is]
more than you think it is. [I am]
new to this board, but I can tell you two things I know for certain.
One, the SD slot is not SD/IO directly, however.....
Viewtake does offer a camera than plugs into the SD slot of these phones and works very well. Takes decent pictures, with several options of picture size and type, will take 8fps video, and comes with a nice software suite. I know because I have one. Anyone who would like pics of or from it just need to ask.
Two, I happen to be a security systems installer (actual Security systems, not software or computer based) and one of the places I installed a system, I happen to get the chance to speak with someone who is part of the top eschelon of the windows mobile solutions development team. This person seemed to enjoy chatting with me about the OS and the products. In talking about the PPC PE I was told that, although nothing could be confirmed (non-disclosure agreements), that I would be VERY surprised what the SD slot on the PPC PE was capable of. I do believe that more can be done with it than is thought. Has ANYONE actually tried the install of any SD/IO devices like a Bluetooth or 802.11b SD Card?
if i were you i'd try to do a search on the subject
and you'll get plenty of useful posts
also there are many posts about cams which works for xda in the Accessories forum
of cause it's possible to make many many things which today needs sdio using just a normal sd connector
a sd connector works for ram
if a sd card have some flash apart from the stuff which take care of it's function
and both the device and the sd's non mem part have access to that mem
they can communicate writing in some files in the mem part of the sdcard
but since pretty much all new devices today come with SD IO
i doubt there is a big market for those devices which is also more complex to make then a normal SDIO which is a descriped std
we have seen bluetooth headsets which works for xda
but it's a bit of a cheat since it goes into the headset connector
and just make the analog signal bluetooth to the headset
this mean you cant use anything else then the headset
pretty much everything is possible but when there is lots of work involved and not a pile of coins in the end people dont really line up to get involved
Easily done withour SD/IO
A camera for xda could easily be developed without requiring anything special from the SD slot.
If the camera were fully self contained with the ability to write to flash mem that is also addressible from the device as a standard SD card would be... all the camera is doing is saving to sd, and the xda is reading from sd the files that the camera saved.
Pretty simple... the tricks are on the camera, not the xda.
Josh
I´ve it !
Hello,
all the story´s about a Com for a XDA / MDA & Siemens SX56 are true !
I must know it, because i sell the Cam´s

Guys... i may have a solution/workaround to enable the use of SDHC Cards in the Hermes... i have obtained some SDHC Drivers and reg settings...
but i unfortunately dont have a SDHC card lying around... so if you have one PM me and ill send you the instructions...
cross those fingers guys
That would be so sweet! But I wonder if anyone here has such card, since it has been tested not to work earlier. And I for sure would sell it pretty quickly if it didn't work.
Best of luck with your efforts on this one!
Good luck on your efforts.
There are a LOT of anxious people out here hoping you are successful! (including myself!)
I have a 4gb microSDHC card. Send me the instructions and I will try them after I get home from work today...
an Update... cooking a new ROM with the appropriate drivers inserted into the XIP and will upload for the users to test...
schapps rom already supports sdhc, I am using it right now wot my 4gb microsdhc card from Sandisk
Can confirm what mcq3000 says, schapps ROM and the SanDisk 4GB SDHC micro SD works well.
Cheers

Yah!!! But I still am willing to try out those drivers, please. The more the merrier... Walshieau, I PM'd you with my details.

update 1.... confirmed schaps ROM's are SDHC compliant...
OEMDrivers into other ROM's as well as some reg entries... looking good so far...
Does anyone know if the LVSW 5-19 ROM (3.30.2.1) supports the SDHC as well? Looks like it might be the same OS number so I can hope for the best.
I'm currently running vp3G's mod of it.

Wild guess, no, because of the build. BUT, I should be getting my 4g sdhc today. And since I'm using vp3g's version currently on my 8525, I'll be able to check this real easy after work tonight (@ 12AM EDST) Let you know then, okay?
Thanks, I appretiate you checking. I suspect you are right that it will not because the 5-19 build doesnt. Maybe we can get vp3G to include this in his next build for us!
Hey guys... Sorry about last night- I had to pull a surprise double at work. Just put my 4gb sdhc micro in my 8525 with vp3G's latest (as of 6/15), and...
Nothing!!! But we guess that. The kicker is that I don't what the new card is formatted in-- my cardreader, or maybe win2k doesn't see the card either. So i will flash to schapps' ROM now as I was planning to all along, and the do LVSW's new WWE ROM 6/16 as well and report on both. TTFN!!!
Just finished flashing schapp's, and as we know already the sdhc micro does get read with this build. Yay!!! The card works!!!Now downloading lvsw's newest rom... Will be a couple of hours before I can check it, probably TTfn!!!
Well, if anyone wants to know, I just flashed lvsw's ROM (6/16), and my 4gb sdhc reads as 3878.47mb. So it works. And I and my 8525 are happy until the next big thing happens. (But I still don't really like the black!!!)
just to confirm, I have just flashed the Black Shadow ROM, and my SanDisk 4gb microSDHC card *DOES* work with this ROM
Nice to know! From reading the 6-16 LVSW post it looks like there are some pretty big bugs and missing stuff in the new release so it might be a while before we get to upgrade to that. I might just pick up a $30 2gig card to use with the fantastic vp3G build that I'm currently running.
Out of curiosity, has anyone tried using a sdhc with a capacity > 4gb?? If I follow the logic behind what the fix for this issueis , they should work, but what do I know...
an Update.... just got work from 'someone' that ALL the WM6 ROMS from HTC with build 17745 and UP have support for SDHC...

IS THERE one, yet?? It took so long to get 4gb micro...
walshieau-- Yayyyy
whatledog - I've seen links to 16 gig micro sdhc cards...beyond that I can't say. its so hard to separate fact from fiction on the internet
edit: so I looked for the 16 gig link and all I could find were references to an 8 gig from samsung which doesn't appear to be readily available. rats.
Hi,
I would like to ask, if somebody does know, if Micro SD WIFI exists and where to buy it. Is Micro SD same as Micro SDIO? I am really confused.

Spectec should be coming out with MicroSD WiFi shortly. You can preorder it on the Expansys website.
As for MicroSD and MicroSDIO, read here.

But you could have a long wait.
The Spectec card has been on pre-order for a long time at expansys, and remember that it'll take the place of any memory card that you may have installed. And they're going to be expensive if/when they do appear.
It would be great if they have a wifi card with atleast 2gig also in it
Hoping it will not cost too much!
i dont why they dont just produce one that goes in the usb port then sits all along side of device so as not to stick out, and even replace the battery cover with it for extra strength! or has this been done?

Don't think the Dual (or any/many windows mobile devices) can act as a USB host though. It'd be a huge power draw though, maybe half your battery life?
It cant act as a usb host unfortunately. Its a long shot but i would personally hold off for a couple of months and see how this WIFI project unfolds before investing in something as expensive as these microsd wifi cards will be.
To answer an earlier comment about it being good if they started making micro sd wifi cards with built in memory, its been done before with normal sd cards, only trouble is that HTC devices dont like them!!
Spectec Mini SD WiFi Card, SDW-822
Hello all,
It is possible to buy it,
check this website
http://www.expansys.nl/p.aspx?i=125665
or
http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=Spectec+Mini+SD+WiFi+Card,+SDW-822&btnG=Zoeken&meta=lr=lang_nl
If you buy and test let me know please
do you know the different about MINI SD and MICRO SD???
Mini SD are bigger than Micro SD, so you can't use Mini SD on the dual.
3s this for real?
what exactly do these micro sd cards do? 3m just curious..
hi
htc flyer can support micro sd 64gb?!
I think all 64 gb micro SD are sdxc and I think the flyer only supports up to 32gb sdhc.
That is correct in theory, however it appears that most devices that state mini-SDHC (32GB max) compatibility work with SDXC, so it might be worth a try.
Wish I had one to try
I try mini sd 32gb and work in flyer.
any body try 64gb on flyer ?!
I wouldn't think so but you never know until you try it I guess. You might try reading here before purchasing one though - http://www.androidcentral.com/sandisk-announces-64gb-microsdxc-card-dont-get-too-excited

Thanks
I think micro sd 64gb not work with flyer.
anyway ... if anybody try this ... plz comment here.

Lol, I have more music that that never mind videos and audiobooks. Pretty sure by the way she described here usage butterflygirl could easily fill one too.
Yes it's too much to listen to all together, but you can never tell in advance what you'll be in the mood for.
Yeah you are right, I have a music collection that's over 25 Gb, but I pared it down to 16 Gb for travel because there other stuff I will never listen to.
I have the best part of half a terrabyte of music. That is WAY more than anyone could feasibly listen to even on a very long trip for sure but I have a tendency to listen to a track or two from an album at random and move on, so it's hard to pare it down properly. If I could use OTG it would solve any problems but for now I make a day-by-day decision what to transfer from the Cloud/PC and have a few 32GB SD cards so it's no really a big deal anyway.
@globatron
Yep, butterflygirl could fill up that space. I have 12gb of manga alone....
Contest!!!
Let's see who can fill up the most space on their Flyer!
Ready, Go!
I'm surprised no one has pressed on USB host. I see random reports that people have it on their Flyer but so far no dedicated method for making it work.

I will start playing with usb host when I have Honeycomb. If I don't see HC soon in US, then I will probably try globatron's method.

Easy with source, just compile the module. I'm seeing nothing at all on the usb bus when I try with HC and I'm not bothered enough to blind port it.

As near as I can tell (with my limited ability) USB host seems to be working on the RC of HoneyComb (as used in FlyHoney) but, is not working on the final release.
I'll pop Nicki a note and see if he compiled something or if it was in the beta base. If he has things set up to compile the module it should be pretty simple to get this up and running.
Any word from Nicki on USB host?
Forgot to ask when the source landed, it is there...just seems the HTC have taken strange interpretation of the OTG standard. I was fiddling at it a bit yesterday and I can get it to go into OTG mode but it doesn't detect any attached device.
Since the dna does not have an sd card slot, would I be able to get a adapter for micro usb to usb and then use a flash drive for more space?
that really is a good idea

Yes, USB hosting is supposed to work on this device.
So, as I posted in a different thread, why not a case that plugs in the the usb and has either flash memory or an sd slot? The make those extra case batteries, why not an extra storage case?

You have to be rooted and have a app from chainfire call root stickmount.
Update: I was told "Sense 4+ has the option for it!", so I'll have to look under settings. So it looks like you don't need root and you can turn on USB host.
Internal micro SD hardware hack?
I posted this question in another thread, but posting as reply here too. Since the J Butterfly has a micro SD slot, I'm guessing the DNA has the internal connections for a slot. Can anyone verify this? Might someone be able to develop a hardware hack to add in an internal micro SD card?

Someone posted pics of the DNA taken apart, and there is no spot for a SD Card.
---------- Post added at 01:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:46 AM ----------
On another note... anyone have the DNA unlocked/rooted and an OTG cable? If so, can you plug a USB Thumb Drive into the phone, boot to recovery and see if recovery recognizes the drive? I only ask as it could serve as a SD Card to flash ROMs/Zip Mods and store Nand backups if it does... and if it doesn't, we should ask the TWRP guys to see if it is possible.
Good news and bad news...
So on the plus side, I can confirm that USB hosting works!!! I made a horrible makeshift OTG cable and it works!!
Its really nice, I tried a 4 port hub with keyboard mouse and flash drive. I love it. Now all I gotta do is put linux on here
However, space is so limited on this thing, didn't think I was gonna regret not having an sd card slot!! Bummer...
But WorldOfJohnyboy gave me hope. His idea is great. Unfortunately I was disappointed when I found that neither CWM nor TWRP picked up the drive.
I was hopeful that it was gonna work since it works perfectly on android with out any thrid party apps, but I didn't even see flashing from the drive while booting recovery.
Oh well, hopefully its something that can be worked on.
I bought a cable for $2 on ebay, plugged it into the micro usb port on the phone, stuck a microsd card reader on the other end and I can read and write to my old SD card. No problems at all here.
If you had a ton of extra storage that you wanted to access, you could get one of those hard drives that creates its own wireless network. They have mini flash-drive sized ones, but they're pretty expensive and arguably unnecessary.
Havoc, I have a feeling the reason why the recoveries didn't recognize it is due to the programming end, I.e. its not setup for it. I'm sure someone could get them to work with it though, someone smarter than me haha.
