T-Online MDA keeps formatting card. - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

My WallabyPW10A2 has wm2003 final 4.02.04. I tried 3 different versions before ant the result is the same - it keeps formatting the card (or destroying its contest, leaves 10% of dirs and files, all damaged). Im beginning to wonder if i wont stop use it, as its pointless to install all sofware every 3-5 days. It is a NIGHTMARE! I have 2 cards - Kingston 256mb (normal) and Hi-speed 128mb Pentaflash - there is no difference. Ive heard that 2002 doesnt do it, but i really need 2003. Please help and forgive if this question has been asked before but i could not find the answer. (or the question)

You could try addimg this to your registry:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\PCMCIA\SDCard]
"BlockTransferSize"=dword:00000028
"FSD"="FATFSD.DLL"
"Prefix"="DSK"
"Ioctl"=dword:00000004
"IClass"=hex(7):7B,00,41,00,34,00,45,00,37,00,45,00,44,00,44,00,41,00,2D,00,45,00,35,00,37,00,35,00,2D,00,34,00,32,00,35,00,32,00,2D,00,39,00,44,00,36,00,42,00,2D,00,34,00,31,00,39,00,35,00,44,00,34,00,38,00,42,00,42,00,38,00,36,00,35,00,7D,00,00,00,00,00
"Dll"="SD.DLL"
For some people it worked, for some it didn't.
But do not forget to make a backup of your current Registry settings. Some user have reported, that they hadn't got any access to SD card afterwards....

k
ok. Added that. Time will show. (i had 2 formats since my last post so it wont be long)

i hate mda
buying MDA-S (mda-sh*t) as phone+pocketpc was a very bad idea. Another "format" occured after few hours. (with the changes in registry from Lumpistefan) Some things i noticed:
1. The more data I have, the more probably the card will be formatted. (it was 90% full, only for 1 hour beforme format, not for the first time)
2. When deletion occurs there are 2 to 4 "memory cards" visible (as "Storage Card" "Storage Card2" etc.) up to another ejection
3. Often this "format" leaves few files and dirs (all files unreadable, most of dirs are ok)
Im changing to 2002 again... bye bye openttd, pocketuae and all new applications.
Its silly that if it is a common problem (somebody told me that), there is still no solution.... (the same guy told me that there is a patch on xda-dev I read a lot before buying this so-called phone and never found an information about this kind of issue. So how often is it? Does it depends on model? What can i do instead of downgrading system to 2002? Will it help?
BTW i cant change card to read-only mode - jumper doesnt work. (probably card's fault)
Other problems with MDA-S:
1. Looses the range (after some time of beeing in pocket) and cant find network by its own (i need to change setting from Auto to Manual and select the network, or when manual is set, i must change to auto - and it finds network with no problem - so it is a software error, that i have seen on all oses i used)
2. it works VERY VERY bad in big cities where there is 1800mhz network. I have model PW10A2 (900/1800).
Points 1 and 2 cause that in big cites i must often make multiple resets to get the range (record - it took me 28 minutes in the centre of the city to make a call!!!!!!!!! i admire myself that i havent crashed the device on the wall)
3. Battery doesnt charge - after reset the problem is 'fixed'.
4. Remote control (for TV) programs dont work at all (irda works fine)
etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc......
If you can help me with any of following problems, please do!
ps. I advice anyone that is poor, but healthy, not to destroy your health by buying device called wallaby.

problem
great. now i cant flash my rom via usb nor from sd card (unable to save rom to sd card using OSImageTools and usb connection). I will not buy one single piece of equipment for this mda so dont tell me i need sd card reader. Is there a way around?

Try adding a "My Documents" folder to the storage card. Not sure if it will work on your device, but it fixed the same problem on my Wizard. Have you installed applications on the storage card?

I'm sorry for my polish here but it's is the easiest way to explain this to him.

i had enough of wm2003 and its formats. Changed to 2002 and no formats yet (2 weeks). Its a shame i cant have 2003 :/

Not saying I am an expert but WM2003SE does not have that problem, maybe you should try going up from WM2003 instead of down. Just a thought.

My MDA II died after ROM 1.60 upgrade

Hi guys,
I need some serious help here. Today I tried to upgrade my MDA II with the latest 1.60 ROM. Somehow during the upgrade something went wrong and my computer frooze and needed a reset. This was in the beginning 10 minutes of the ROM upgrade and my the screen of my PPC went off. After the reboot of my workstation I could not get my MDA II to connect to my workstation. The MDA is completely useless now. The only thing I have on the screen is:
Serial (or USB) on top of the screen (with no backlight) and at the bottem of the screen Version 1.01.
I can't soft reset of hard reset. I took the battery out and waited for almost 30 minutes but I still can't turn the thing on nor can I soft or hard reset. I can't thing of anything else that I can do and I just sold my Loox yesterday so now I'm lost!
Anybody with a good suggestion??
Please help.

Wouter

I think it's a way to use a SD-card with a Rom on it.
Looks like Your bootloader is still working and can reflash a rom to Your device.
Now You have to find somone with an 64MB SD-card to put a rom on it and reflash Your device.
With best regards
Jens
Hi Jens,
I think my bootloader is not working anymore. I tried to do a hard reset a dozen times but the bootloader menu doesn't come up. But thanks for suggesting though.
Wouter
Hi wouterk,
I don't know if this would be of any help, but you've got nothing to lose now.
I've got a similar error that the RUU program asked me to remove my XDA II from the cradle and right after that, the XDA II screen freeze at "Seria 1.01", same as yours.
So I put my XDA II back to the cradle and from my PC, I clicked Control Panel > System > Device Manager > and here my XDA II was recognized as an unknown device, so I updated the MS USB Sync driver.
After the driver update, I rerun the RUU and the ROM upgrade went fine. Now I have my XDA II back alive and kickin' with the new MDA ROM. At least this works for mine and hope it would also work for yours as well.
HTH.
Hi Joparp,
Of course I gave your suggestion a try. But too bad it didn't work for me like that :? . I remebered that when my workstation crashed, after the reboot it found a new USB device (my cradle?) but I couldn't get your sollution to work for me. But I still have hopes. Tomorrow evening I'll meet a guy who can fix my problem (keep my fingers crossed....). So I feel reasonable relaxed now.
It is nice to see that so many people responded to my problem. I posted my problem on three different sites and many people responded. That was a nice feeling! I keep this thread posted about the result of tomorrow.
B.t.w did you install the 1.60 ROM eventually?
Wouter
Hello wouterk
well, i'm sorry about this and i guess the safest way to do ROM update thru SD Card.
i do agree with jenson suggestion and i can't see any other way to resolve this problem which i hope will work here are the steps as follows :-
ask any one who has MDA II device, 64MB SD Card and SD Card reader to backup his/her ROM and Post it for you somewhere where you can download it and write it to SD Card.
ofcourse he/she if using Windows will need serial cable and hyper terminal software which normally can be fount under start/programs/Accessories/Communication otherwise download from http://www.hilgraeve.com/htpe/index.html
get the device into Bootloader Mode ( power button+any direction+reset )
Connected via Serial cable and use these setting 115200 baud, 8n1, direct to com1 port or maybe com2 it depends on which port they use
type d2s command to backup ROM to SD Card which i recommend 64MB SD card formatted and when done you will see something look like this
D:Waiting for card insert.........
SDetected one card
SD:ready for transfer OK
Total card size=3D40000ze=0
SDCARDD2S+,cStoragePlatformType=FF
********************************************************************************
***********************************************
Store image to SD/MMC card successful.
SER>
then reset the device and get SD card reader and insert this card into the reader and use ntrw image reading and writing tool
if you don't have it you can download it from here http://www.tamiminet.com/othman/ntrw.exe
from the command line run ntrw read MDAII.nb1 E:
This assumes your SD card reader has drive letter E:
now you will have new file which is MDAII.nb1 it's about the size of the SD card zip it and post it somewhere so he/she can Download it and unzip it then write it back to SD Card using this command b]ntrw write MDAII.nb1 E:[/b]
again this assumes your SD card reader has drive letter E:
when done go into bootloader mode ( power button+reset ) with SD card inserted, hit camera button and flash your device with rom which is on SD Card
if you don't have serial cable you still can do it using Linux with cardle and thanks for bio and few other cool guys who mentioned this hints on other thread
put your device in bootloader mode
connect via cradle
use any terminal (minicom) to connect to the used port (/dev/ttyUSB0)
- you should see something like 'USB>' or 'SER>'
put an SD Card into device
type d2s on command prompt
wait untill you see Store image to SD/MMC card successful
i don't think this will include the Applications on the Extended ROM but no problem this can be done later.
i hope this could help to get back you device to life.
best regards and good luck.

It is working again!
Hi guys,
Thanks to Akira my MDA II is working again. Everything is working again exept for the bluetooth communication with my Emtac bluetooth GPS. That problem still remains in my case. I even did another hard reset but still the same problem. I then put the Towa fix again on it and now I can use my GPS again.
So thank you all guys!

First impressions with Magneto.

Pleasant interface.
ActiveSync 4 works through USB.
I cannot accede to Storage and ExtendedROM.
All buttons correctly work including camera and record.
Backpack dont works (Some change in the registry to fix that?)
ExtendedROMunlocker dont work.
Resco file explorer works.
Cabinstl works.
I can install programs from PC to PPC through USB (ActiveSync), in PPC (not in PC) screen ask about install in "Device" or "Storage Card".
Internet Explorer works trough USB (ActiveSync)
I cannot make hard reset but I can put it in bootloader mode.
I only have been one hour proving it.
At the moment he is everything.

p.s. Hope it will be soon released a version for the magician
Some screen captures
I have few installed programs but I think that the speed is very similar.
I do not understand very well as Magneto uses the memory, you have 14,57MB of ROM (storage) to install programs but you cannot install them in the RAM.
You can see 24,35MB of RAM but I believe that Magneto uses all the RAM, only who deal with form different those 24.35 from the 100 rest that we cannot see.
Resco file explorer cannot accede to Windows or temp but microsoft file explorer if it can.
Parrot CK3000 works fine.
About backpack: battery and TV/monitor output works but CF slot dont works.
Is it still using the MS bluetooth stack ? Any improvement on bluetooth function ?
Yes, it is MS BT, but now it appears a new menu, "COM Ports"
IMPORTANT: I have upgrade to Magneto using himaupgradeut_197.exe and the original nk.nbf file (without patching)
It has worked to the first time and I have not had any error of identification.
Also I have left the Storage empty before beginning the update.
what does the "patch" do anyway?
where did you get this version can you upload your version? or share it?
I heard that it i impossible to downgrade to 2003se is that true?
what do you advice: try it or not try it until its officially released(It is beta right?)
thx

It changes the filename of file "DevAuth.exe" in a way that it can't be executed anymore before start.
This application checks the hardware in some way to determine if the device is allowed to use the software. Maybe some of you have a device that matches this "authentication".
What about BT voice call?
Hi
"Parrot CK3000 works fine."
Does it mean that you can originate a call from BT device? Voice dial or smth. like this?
Or it just receiving calls and you can hear and microphone is working?
Making of voce calling over BT is one reason for me to upgrade...
can you give met the link for witch i can download it?
I have used the file nk.nbf from Xda-developers ftp.
I have returned to wm2003SE with himaupgradeut_197.exe and nk.nbf file of version 2.06.
ParrotCK3000 works just as with 2,06 version and the change of the registry.
Magneto is very interesting but it specially has a great failure, when you install many programs the system becomes slower, particularly with programs like betaplayer.
If the problem of the RAM use and the access to CF slot were solved, it would be a great system.
2.06 works with AS 4.
More news:
Magneto can be reinstall again using himaupgradeut_197.exe in bootloader mode.
If we installed the programs in the SD and left frees the memory of the PDA, the system goes much more fast.
Some programs cannot be installed in the SD and they settle in the PDA. Some programs that work in wm2003 and wm2003se not admit magneto, aborts the installation.
SPB pocket plus does not settle because it says that it is being tried to install on ppc2000 and aborts the process.

please help me.. Connection ERROR!!!!

hi
I have downloaded the wm2003se from lumpinstefan and i could change the rom of my pocket pc to that version by using ActiveSync.
Now i downloaded another version of the rom and i tried to install it on my Qtek 1010 (Wallaby) and it in the black window on my computer appears:
"ERROR: GetConnectionType - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the rem
ote host.
error getting connectiontype"
When i press the next button in the setup it says " cannot execute the remote communication prgram. please make sure that USB/Serial is properly connected". and the setup shuts down.
i Need You to know that before the new rom i downloaded from lumpistefan i was using pocket pc 2002 on my pocket pc.
Now it's clear that there is some problems in the connection. i tried it on several computers but i faced the same problem. is there any setting on my pocket pc to change??
Please somebody helps me i really need to know how to solve the problem.
Regards, and thank you.
Try searching the forum.
It´s an old problem copncerning to some T-Mobile ROMs
You have to flash your device via SD-Card....
Try also some looking in the wiki. The process how to flash vi SD-Card is there described...
And please do not post multiple threads with the same topic....

ROM Upgrade communication error
Yeah I am having the same problem after installing the T-Mobile ROM, the same communication error when I try and change the installed ROM Image.
I did think it was something wrong with ActiveSync or my laptop
Has anyone got any hints on how to do this on a Wannaby? (Saves me getting the wrong idea whilst reading through reams of text).
Many Thanks
Yes i have upgradet my rom via sd card and it worked. it is easy....
Any way thanks so much buddies... tell me something, is there a place in this forum where i can download the windows mobile 2005 version?
2005
I am abit of a newby to this site. I havent seen 2005 yet. Can I ask where I can find instructions for writing an SD card and how to apply to my PDA?

Hmm doesnt work for me. I am selecting the browse button to select the nbf file from the image and in the second drop down box selecting the sd card. When I press copy it comes up with the error ITWriteSDCard: The media is write protected, error opening target device. The card isnt locked as I can read and write files to it using explorer. Whats going on?!?!
Growing frustration!!!

Some internal SD-Card Writer make problems. i Think you can use also the SD-Card-Slot in your devuce, or you have to get an external Writer...

System files moving not permitted

Hi to everyone.
Before this HTC device I had others and also had a Motorola Mpx220 (WM2003 SE).
I was used to move the files within "\Windows\Start Menu" (mostly .lnk files to installed programs) into newly created subfolders, to be able to use and/or access the function I needed in a faster way.
I've tried doing the same on this WM5 device, but everytime I try I get an error message reporting it is not possible (File Explorer has greyed out options to cut and/or copy, while TotalCommander just reports it's not possible to "overwrite" ???).
Does anyone have an idea of how this can be done (registry ???) ?
Thank you.
Ciao
Here is the solution...
Hi Mix, it's Mix answering (yes, I'm the same person...)...
First of all I would like to thank you ALL the people which knew the solution and were fighting to answer to my doubt...
You were so many, I wonder why the message has been read times and so many answers arrived: 0 (yes, ZERO).
Anyway, I came across the solution myself, by chance...
The problems seems being the smartphone versions of WM5 being protected against file modifications. This protection extends also to some files execution and to certificate installations (hence some problems may arise when connecting to an Exchange Server for syncronization).
Some tools are needed to remove this protection, and some experience of registry modification is required too (I will not help anyone beside what is in this message and I take no responsability for any mistakes and/or troubles you may produce or face).
First of all you need a special version of RegEdit (the tool from PHM): you should find an HTC digitally signed copy of it called RegEditSTG.exe.
Look around for it: there are many forums around which do hold a copy of it.
Place it in your phone's memory, not on the MicroSD card...
With this tool you should change the following values:
HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\00001001 = 2 => 1 (RAPI)
HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\00001005 = 16 => 40 (Cert)
HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\00001017 = 128 => 144 (?)
The first is the value you will find, the second is the value you should enter. The third line has a question mark because someone says it should be made, someone not... It's up to you. I made it.
Then you should find another tool (with the same above method) called SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe which has to be run on your desktop PC with the phone already connected with USB (and possibly with ActiveSync not in the middle of a sync...).
Once you run this, you will get a message that the unlock took place (if not, it may be the first operations did not complete well).
Disconnect your phone from the USB cable and power cycle it (switch it off and then on again).
Opla'... the phone is not APPLICATION UNLOCKED and you will be able to move file around the directories as I was looking to when I first posted my message.
Now I have a very quick Start Menu, as I wanted.
Please, be aware that this operation hacks the security policies of WM5 and then any other application which may be dangerous can now run on your phone.
If you wish to stay on the safe side, it could be useful to restore the registry settings to their original values, but I do not know if this could cause other problems, since I didn't on my phone.
I actually double check every single file by myself before launching it and I do not run anything which I'm not sure it is safe.
So, pay attention... (you have been warned...).
Hope this helps someone else out there.
Ciao
Thanks for the tips mate! I was searching around for the same problem.
Can a hard reset put all the files back as in the old WM2003? I'm asking that 'cause if you look at the windows directory, many exe and dll files are repeated, with a different code. I guessed they are for the many different languages the phone support and the code is the country code. Maybe when you switch from one language to another those files are renamed so you have the correct exe and dll for the language you need...
If I can erase all the files I don't need (I will never change the language or maybe have only italian and english) I can save lot of space.
Am I wrong? Was that ever tried before?

In order:
- Yes, I suppose a hard reset of the device completely restores the original factory settings, hence, the device will appear as "brand new".
- You're right: all the localized files present there are just to be able to swithc to other languages (maybe following user's settings and maybe also following user's SIM settings too...).
- Erasing the unused files may appear as a "space saving" job. It is not. First of all you will not be able to remove ROM resident files, but provided you could be able to do this, you will not be able to use ROM space as you intend...
Finally then, it's completely unuseful to try to remove them, just a waste of time trying...
Ciao
Thanks Michele.
Are you sure the windows directory is in ROM?
I always tought ROM was only to store the "disk" image when you hard reset the device. I was so for the Qtek S100.

Yes it is. On the fact that it is then copied into RAM, well, this is a tecnique which was used up to WM2003 SE devices.
Starting from WM5 devices MS somewhat changed the behaviour of the whole system, hence I'm not then so sure.
Indeed, I have never been sure of anything, beside death, so you can imagine...
I'm not really so "expert".
Having used an MPx220 for over one year (with all its limitations, but exploiting it very much), using a WM5 device now is a much more relaxed experience (faster, more realiable and less troubly in terms of memory).

Thanks Mix - i followed your directions and it worked.

error getting connectintype

hi ppl,
today I ve made rom with the romkitchen, it was 2003 final and everything went ok, phone was functional until I used to try to install some newer versin of the programs I previously included in the rom. That didnt work (of course) so I decide to put another rom without those programs so I can install newer versions but when I run the romkithen exe computer report
in the dos window
error getconnectiontipe - unspecified error
error getting connectiontype
and the program for the patching report that he is trying to get the data from the device and after that he reports that
"cannot execute the remote communication program, please make sure that the usb/serial cable is properly connectes"
of course cable is connected, device syncing with the active sync and the icon is green, used to try to soft reset pc and pocketpc, to hardware reset pocket pc, to connect it to other pc and patch there, to install active sync 3.7.1, to reinstall active sync 4.2, to reinstall usb drivers on the pc, to put sim card and sd card out and to patch then... nothing helped...
what can I do ? is that due to the windows 2003 instalation on the pocket pc (had same version on other wallaby without the problems) ? can I solve that some way ?
I ve read before that patching can be performed from the SD card so I found the xda tools and osi image tool but couldnt found rom nd1 file anywhere (was stupid and didnt make copy of my previous rom)... which rom can I use just to enable USB connection and after that I ll patch it with the "normal" rom from the rom kitchen...
Ive checked those roms http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=ROMVersions but didnt find any nd1 file in the files I ve checked, can I use those roms with osi image tool eventually ?
which one ?
Lots of questions ... Sorry people ...
I can use it in this condition too but I d rather have an opportunity to flash it to some other version maybe.
Best regards to the community !
I think it´s just the problem that the ROM prohibits flashing via EXE-file. You have to flash via SD-Card.....
You find the ROm to write on the SD-Card in the EXE-FIle. Just extract the exe using winzip, and then you will find it in a subdirectory (normally english, or dependent on the ROM-Language...)
Stefan
Thanks a lot Stefan, so I can use some ROM from the page http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=ROMVersions ?
Any advice which one should I take please (Im not using any of the operators noted there, just looking for some rom that will function ok) ?
Thanks m8 !
Yes, you can take any rom of it. Mostly the T-Mobile prohibits flashing via EXE-File, but Flashing via SD-Card is more secure in my opinion. So i´ve done 99,9% of my flashes via SD-Card, and you can believe me, i´ve done it a lot of times.....
By the way, which software has to been updated in my romkitchen?
If you give me the hints, i could try to update them....
Stefan
thanks a lot for your time and advices Stefan !
Its not a huge problem but probably we share same opinion - most of the tech guys like to see that everything work fine, if something doesnt work then we re not satisfied.
Basically problem is that I included spb pocket plus in the rom and therefore I cant install spb weather which demands pocket plus v 2.5+ and version in the rom is 2.0. I cant upgrade it coz its in the ROM, used to try to remove it from the registry but no luck, used to install latest spb diary coz the spb weather also work with the diary but looks like that the first thing weather perform is checking of the pocket plus version and if the version is not 2.5+ it stops the installation...
Probably for the most of the people spb weather is not a reason for loosing couple of hours in trying to change rom in wallaby but as I ve mentioned I like the things that work 100%, if some electronic/computer stuff work at 99% that usually bother me. Stupid - I know but thats the way it is.
Im going to patch it thru the SD, thanks again for the all your efforts now and before.
GL & HF !
Sorry...
Still need help, using the OSI tool I copyed NK.nbf file from 4.02.04_eng rom to "XDA SD Card Slot -unknown size" - coz I dont have card reader/writer at the present moment so I tought that I can put the file via the cradle connection while the card is in the wallaby...
Checked the card from the wallaby file explorer but nothing is on the card, since I had expirience with direct writing to c64 and amiga disks writing I assumed that file could be written directly to the card without OS instructions but after the reset of the wallaby it report that card shoud be formatted to become writable... Is that normal, or I should wait for the card writer reader to put the file properly to the sd card ?
If possible please help me with the link for the OSI tool patching, I cant find it anymore, checked thru the site but no luck, dont know what I have to press so the wallaby read the rom from the sd card.
Thanks Stefan & all others
success !
No help needed, I ve made it...
So dont have any fears as Stefan told unpack the rom from the self extracting archive and run osi tool, in the source field set nbf as a file type and then select extraced rom.
As a target you can set card reader/writer and also you can put the SD card in the wallaby as I did. Set the XDA SD card as a target in that case.
Its normal that after the writing (no message that writing is successfull, when it is finished OSI tool will stop) SD card become unreadable to wallaby.
Then perform actions as noted in SD card patching info
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wallaby_HT_FlashSD
Hold the power button and soft reset. You'll be taken to the below screen:
SD DOWNLOAD
Card Type:
CE OS & BOOT
Press action to Download
Or
Press REC to Exit
Press action to download and it will start the download/restore from the SD card.
Follow the on screen instructions once its "Completed" which will consist of a " Hard Reset"
Action button mentioned above is middle button - "D PAD"
Works like a charm, now I have o2 win 2002 and later I ll patch it to 2003 SE again but without pocket plus.
Thanks Stefan and community !
