I need to replace my brick'd TyTN today. I'm traveling for business next week and need a device. I like the look of the JASJAM and 8525 better than the TyTN, but I'm not sure which model I should buy. I would just buy the 8525 from Cingular, but it doesn't look like it will be out within a few days, as was originally promised. With all the models of the Hermes out there, which would you prefer if you were buying again? Thanks
BTW...my current TyTN will be off to Germany for repairs. I'll probably Ebay one or the other, or give it to my Dad, when it gets back from its repair journey.
Are you travelling in or out of the country?
I'm staying in the country for this trip
Well, the hardware issues (inoperative flash, bad keys, SA) on the TyTN seem to be worked out. No US operators officially carry the HERMES yet however so overseas repairs are going to be an issue.
Mu thoughts would be to get another TyTN and sell the repaired one on eBay when you get it back... Or keep it for a TyTN experimental mule. Maybe HTC will put in the SA fix too as a matter of course on your old one.
Heck, can we even get operator branded HERMES devices here?
I hear ya...I'm going to ship it next week and see what happens. In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can get a decent price on the JASJAM, as I do like the look a bit better.
Thanks!

You may remember me, i was one of the first to brick my TyTn. Back in Oct/Nov, i sent it to Germany to be repaired. It never arrived and I assumed it was lost so I bought another one, which I have since sold.
Today, to my suprise, the package was at my door, it never made it and was returned in it's original box. So, because i haven't been following these threads as I didn't have a Tytn, i have a couple of questions.
Have people been able to un-brick the TyTn? Can you buy batteries? as I sold mine as an extra when I sold the new phone.
Anyone want to by a perfect condition, bricked TyTn w/no battery?

You can buy a battery for the PPC/XV6700 as they are the same. Depending on how you bricked your phone it might be possible to fix with some newer techniques.

I'll give you a tenner for it if you are interested? I need a paperweight for my desk...

I am in the states and sent it to Germany.
It's been sold. Thanks
I got the SA problem on my Hermes so I need to send it to HTC for repair.
I CID unlocked it.
How do I lock it back ?
Has anybody sent it to HTC with super-CID and "got away with it"?
This would be why the ROMs are being pulled, you should just be honest, you no longer have a warranty.
no... not really, people do what they want to do.
as far as it goes with HTC, try your luck and hope for the best, you never know...
I sent a CID and SIM unlocked 8125 back to Cingular due to a screen alignment problem. They never complained & sent me a replacement unit.
YMMV
cingular refurbishes them (or audiovox does) and sends them back to ppl as warranty replacements.
On a side note, I was worried about this too. I've never had to sent my TyTN in for repairs, however, I've read over the warranty info multiple times. IMHO, it states very clearly that warranty is on hardware, not software. As such, if someone would make a case out of this, they would have a very difficult time. Since software is not part of the warranty, and you basically own the device, I don't see them having any right to not repair your device.
Ofcourse, IANAL, but it would be interesting to see what would happen

Are you referring to Cingular units? I contacted HTC US and they told me they only repair Cingular (or TMob, etc.) -- branded -- units. They don't repair HTC TyTNs. Referred me to HTC Europe but when I tried to contact them couldn't get a response because I'm in the US.
I had my Charmer, which is CID unlocked and SIM unlocked (which I tried to SIM locked it back, and I think I did), sent to HTC in UK for a speaker (once) and a motherboard (another time) problems. They changed the thing for me without mentioning anything about the CID unlocked. I did change my ROM back to the original one though.

I think I should do that too... I got the Cingular ROM (!).
Is it safe to down grade from Cingular 2.06 to HTC`s 1st ROM ?

Audiovox is HTC us distributor, they only repair TMO and Cingular units, so 8525.

Thanks -- that's the root of the issue -- no one in the US seems willing to repair HTC TyTN (which, I realize, was never sold as a US product) -- but, when I try to find someone overseas who will repair a TyTN, they seem disinclined to deal with me because I'm in the US, and refer me to HTC US. It's a dilemma..... and I have a sick TyTN.
In case anyone was wondering... the cost quoted to me by PocketPCTechs to replace the system board on a bricked JASJAM is $590 USD, plus $60 labor.
Yeah. So I'm having them send it back.
There is also a shortage of the JASJAM/TyTN/Hermes system boards. They've had it a month, and a lot has happened in these forums since then, including some stuff that looks like I'll be able to unbrick it myself... maybe. Hopefully they didn't mess it up any worse (when I sent it, I could still get into the OS).
Unfortunately, when I managed to screw mine up, none of these recent cool programs were out -- and I had to go on a business trip in a week, so I figured I'd send it to the warranty provider and hope they could figure out how to get the radio working again.
How did you brick it?? also what was it doing??
$590+$60 labor? You can get a brand new Softbank X01HT on EBay for less than that.
I had PocketPCTechs replace the LCD on my old XDA IIs. When it came back from PPCT, there was an annoying hum in the earpiece whenever I used the phone. Made the IIs pretty much useless.
IMEI CHECK fixed mine for $40 US. plus shipping....No GSM type brick

Yeah, really. I got a TyTN on eBay from Expansys' open box deals they have there every once in a while for less than that.
hi all is there any hardware difference between ameo and u 1000.
coz i heard that theres a micro drive issue in the ameo
No, originally people had issues with some of the Microdrives in the U1000, but that has all been sorted now. I think it was software related, but there is no difference in hardware between the two devices.
HTH

it's a easy decision for you, if you only want the silver one, go for Ameo, since it's cheaper (on ebay maybe) or just sign up a contract with T-mobile, now some thing you will need to know, All three machine (HTC Advantage, T-mobile Ameo, DOPOD U1000) has Microdrive issue, it's to do with their ROM, you are more likely to find it on Advantage compare to DOPOD U1000 OR Ameo, Actually, DOPOD U1000 is even less likely to happen compare to Ameo due to it's recent ROM update.
If you are not T-mobile customer and will be using other sim card, then you need to consider the sum unlock issue, you can get it done by paying some money.
If you are new to PDA and don't know what CID lock is, and you would want to update your ROM frequently, then t-mobile might not be such a good chose, they don't provide that must support on upgrade and currently there are no promise on WM6 update too.
So really, you should ask yourself these question, are you going to use it with other sim card other then T-mobile (other country)? will you want to upgrade to latest ROM (wm6) without breaking the warranty?
Good luck with your decision, after all, you are about to purchase a wonderful device.
Thanks wu
i am going to use another sim and its unlocked and without warranty
i think pof or asukal or gurus like u might find out how 2 unlock cid
i will go for ameo then
thanks a lot buddy
Cheap EBAY car charger from Bargaincell.com fried the charging circuit/sync/USB connnector on my brand new 8525. The guy tells me he won't do anything about damages, so I'm stuck needing a replacement motherboard. Other than this my device is in perfect condition, so I'm not looking to part it out either.
If you have an operational motherboard, Please email me at:

THANKS!
Have you tried putting the phone in for warranty?
Well, I got the phone 2nd hand off of ebay (No Warranty). Shortly there after, another ebay product killed it. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1443395&postcount=22
I would still try and get it replaced through AT&T. I bought my 8525 through eBay and had an issue with it and AT&T still replaced it under the manufactures warranty for me. I've done it numerous times with phones over the years. The number you should call is 1-800-801-1101. It's definitely worth a shot...
Hmmm... I suppose the worst thing they can tell me is "no"...
I'll be damned... I didn't think that would work... A replacement is on the way! Thanks for the idea, TheBrit and ahfunaki!!
No problem, glad to have saved you some time and money...
And the nice thing is too, the phone you'll receive basically is brand new...
Bah... Cingular/ATT sent me a unit with the White screen issue. right out of the box... *sigh* A replacement for the replacement is on the way...

Or charge you for the new phone after they determine the damage wasnt due to a defect. You gotta be careful as they try to find anthing to make your fault. I got a couple boards if interested
LOL Just called them again tonight... Time for the replacement for the replacement for the replacement . The rep tried to talk me into taking a different model in exchange. "Sir, since you've had the trouble with that model, how about a different model instead? A Blackberry 7100, perhaps?" LOL. He didn't seem too surprised that I asked about the Tilt, and it seemed like he checked stock and said that there was none so far. We'll see what happens.
omg.....really>? if i would of known this i wouldnt of opened my phone and voided it....do you guys think that they will accept it?? i got my 8525 from ebay
to ahfunaki:
