hi all ive read a few quotes from you all about sd cards and the problems you have had, im after buying two sd cards a 128mb just to store music on and a 512mb for media files / dvds/ films on. the question is what card or cards would you recommend as there are so many out there and some do not work or you have had problems working, your feed back is most welcome
I have a 256Mb Lexar with 32x write.....
Regardless of what card you buy, I've heard complaints about data being erased from the card on the WM2003 OS.... Its really annoying.... It has happened to me too.... So I just keep the card locked....
Apart from that, no complaints with the Lexar card I have.... works like a charm.... All the cards that are out there are good.... Lexar and Sandisk seem to be the more popular ones....
Hi, I've just got a Kingston 512MB SD card, are they any good? I do not have my XDA II as yet but am hoping to get it some time this week (waiting on stock )
I am getting very slow speeds on my SD card, even in a SD card reader in Windows XP a few friends have also reported the same problems of speed changes and slowing down... any ideas?
I also want to buy a Kinston 256 for my XDA running on WM2003. ANy comments on the speed or reliability of Kingston? I also have eyes on Viking and Smart coz they are the cheaper ones. Any comments on those brands?
Unfortunatly I have not been able to get my hands on any others, but the Kingstone ones seems to be working with no trouble what so ever so looks goot but not sure how fast they are ment to run or any thing like that so can't offer much information unfortunatly...
Can any one shed some light on the subject for us????
there are tons of sd card benchmarks and comparisons just search google
http://www.google.dk/search?q=sd+flash+benchmark&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=da&btnG=Google-søgning
from that search i found this
http://www.core-sound.com/CF-and-SD-mass-storage-comparison.html
Thanks for the links
I've been through google a bit but there is so much out there I was wondering if any one found any decent ones that are well laid out with graphs and all... comparing many brands of SD...
well i would search on these 2 sites i recall a test of what you are looking for just with CF cards i'm not sure if a company's CF card speed give an impression of their SD card speed or if they also have SD card banchmarks but anyway (sandisk were always last when it comes to speed )

I'm def getting one of 'em!
I couldn't go back to 1 measly gig now
With CardExport your Pocket PC serves as a card reader for your card. no need for that.
What if you want to transfer data between somene elses pc and you don't have the cradle???
I deal for backup on the go!
I use a usb/qtek cable. I allways carry it with my, for file transfer and charger porposes.
For those other cases I'm without cable, I have a 5 dolar pendisk much cheaper! I still get to keep my 1Gb super-cheap plain SDcard on my qtek
Neil - I got the SD ultra II 2 gig card - why would the 1 gig be the ultimate? :?
1gb... 2gb? naaaa go 4gb!

Hi,
I'm new to this sd card stuff, but is there really any point buying a really fast card for the BA?
What would be the difference in everyday use between and normal SD card and one thats rated x133(or even x150) in speed?
Would I get the 15-20meg a xfer rate through my BA?? or would i have to use a decicated Hi-Speed USB 2 card reader?
I'm looking to buy an SD card so that I use my BA for a Sat Nav system.
BTW you can pickup a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II card on ebay for about £30, would this be big enough for the maps for Sat Nav??
Thanks
satpal
:?
Re: card for sat-nav.
I am no expert, but from my experience, the faster the card the better, and there is plenty of discussion on this site regarding the size of cards. From others experience, it appears that as the card gets bigger, the stability is reduced, therefore, a higher speed card is needed.
Regarding what size is needed, I used a 128meg card for 2 years with tomtom, I now have a 256meg with plenty of spare storage. Given curent prices, I have just ordered a 1gig fast card. I will update if it falls over!!
2GB SD card
With the prices of larger cards dropping dramatically, I'm looking to upgrade my 1Gb card to 2Gb.
I'm assuming that it will work ok on this device??
Any thoughts or anyone already tried with success?
normally there may not be much of an issue, but surely for one that plugs into the USB port it is acheiving the fastest possible rate.
The PDA xfer rate might not be as fast as it can be via the cradle, but with the SD plugged into a USB slot I would imagine you could transfer stuff over quicker.
Is there a final word on the compatability of the Hermes with 4 and 8 micro sdhc cards
mpc
I have emailed HTC about this. I also dropped in a question about when they plan on releasing a ROM for the TyTN (rolls on the floor laughing.....deliberatly didnt use the acronym).
According to the FAQ on thier site there is a limitation in the OS :
What is the maximum SD card size compatible with my device?
For Win CE 2003 =>General for SDIO is 1GB.
For WM 5.0 => SD Card is 4GB and Mini-SD is 12GB

also they claim there is no limitation whatsoever?!? But this could be for ANY of thier devices so i emailed them anyway:
Does my device have a maximum size limit for CF/SD cards?
No, as long as it's a standardized memory card (SD or CF) and a device is designed according to those standards then it will accept the card.
EDIT:: DO NOT TAKE THIS AS PROOF OF SDHC COMPATABILITY (mrvanx)

Its a shame nobody has tried (or atleast posted thier findings), but hopefully a reply from HTC would help us out. Cant see why they would withold this info.
I would take the plunge and buy one but the 4GB ones are still pricey (for me) so I would have to REALLY need it for something before forking out the cash.

Responce from HTC
It looks like it is simply a restriction in the drivers by MS according to HTC:
Dear Sir,
I am afraid to say the SDHC memory cards are unsupported by any of our handsets, to offer support for these memory cards Microsoft will need to update the drivers for Windows Mobile 5.0. We have tested our handsets with standard 2GB miniSD cards which work fine.
Thank you for your enquiry, Should you have any other problem, please do not hesitate to call us. Your Local number can be found at

What does that say??
SDHC support has been available for quite some time now if the presence of an SDHC driver in the registry is anything to go on (I've seen it in the AKU2 ROMS). However whether it works or not is a mystery waiting to be solved....
With the "0" setting i did not loose my card today after 4h of operation...
That is for a 2GB Sandisk (not SDHC)
But anyway on SDHC:
I have gathered the following info on the net:
---------
SDHC (Secure Digital High-Capacity) cards are flash memory cards with a minimum capacity of 4GB (gigabytes). SDHC cards provide removable memory for compatible digital devices including cameras, camcorders, PDAs, MP3 players and more. Secure Digital refers to a specific format within the flash card market. SDHC cards are designed for devices that are compatible with the SDHC 2.00 specification. Products designed exclusively to support previous SD specifications 1.0 and 1.1 will not be able to utilize SDHC cards.
The growing demand for high-capacity flash memory springs partially from the increasing use of high-definition video and high-resolution digital photography. SDHC cards meet the challenge of these demanding products not only by providing ample storage but also by introducing a new feature: classifications of data transfer speed (DTS). Consumers can get the best performance value out of their digital products by using flash memory cards that support the device's highest standards for data transfer speed. The SDHC specification 2.00 calls for cards to be classified according to the minimal sustained DTS as follows:
* Class 2: minimum sustained DTS of 2MB/sec
* Class 4: minimum sustained DTS of 4MB/sec
* Class 6: minimum sustained DTS of 6MB/sec
SDHC cards are classified to guarantee a specific sustained DTS. This potentially saves consumers money, as flash cards are priced not only according to capacity, but also to speed. For example, if a product's maximum DTS is 2MB/sec, dishing out extra cash for Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards would be a waste of money. Conversely, devices that can utilize the 4MB/sec or 6MB/sec DTR will perform significantly better with Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards, respectively.
Secure Digital was forced to create a new specification for SDHC cards when the previous specification topped out at a capacity of 2GB. This occurred previously when SD cards hit the 512MB wall. The new 2.00 specification should last a bit longer, as it allows SDHC cards to reach a maximum capacity of 32GB. Secure Digital is so-named because of its ability to protect copyright content through digital rights management or DRM. Because of this, it is a favored flash memory format in the audiovisual industry.
SDHC cards are about the size of a postage stamp. Insiders expect them to be available through several different manufacturers by summer 2006, and prices will vary. Before purchasing, be sure your device is compatible. There are several card formats available on the market, and devices are proprietary. If a device manual does not list SDHC cards, or state it is "SD specification 2.00 compatible," the device cannot utilize these cards.
--------------
This info does not seem fully accurate as I saw on the web a 8GM Micro SDHC...
Anyway we should validate what class the Hermes support, but I would think that Class 2 may be the the maximum speed for this device?
We should investigate further.
Is the pinout for SDHC card THE SAME as SD?
I remember I've read somewhere that pin count is greater.
I'll search on wikipedia
Did some searching, found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-284628.html
the SDHC driver is indeed in the active driver section in the registry in our devices, but as the last post indicates, it's in microsoft's terms and doesn't stand for what we are looking for.
So in short, really pitty, but it looks like we're out of luck.
Edit: Before anyone says it: i KNOW it's a trinity thread, but there's a Hermes user in there!

Its nice to see people that get info after do stupid things like buy a 4GB SDHC...
Its Sad to have a great Machine without this capacity on cards...
I did it today, I have a Hermes 100 (I-mate JasJam).
To cut a long story short:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=58063&d=1194986892
I am currently running a 8GB SDHC Micro card.
Mate, if you updated your rom with a cooked rom you wouldn't need the patch as most wm06 and ALL wm6.1 roms are already sdhc compliant.
Just make sure you have Hard SPL V7 installed before upgrading so if something bad happens you at least have a chance to fix it...
Cheers...
Well I read my post and...
Absolutely right Ultramag has the reason!!!!!
SDHC microSd can be read on HERMES the last word to say it is yessss as ultrmag said the newer BUILDS ROM has the patch!!!
So enjoy your 8gb MicroSDHC and we will wait for 16 GB hahahaha i hope so...

how does the sliding even work?
i've been sliding back and forth, and i keep getting the same memory.
I know it's hacked, because it says the card is full at 600mb, when it's a 2gb card.
Thanks
I bought 4gb nonHC sd mini - after filling cca 1,5gb it erased 90% of data stored. It was 2gb card formatted as 4GB - common fraud (I didn't know about that kind of fraud at that time.)
I couldn't even restore them via sector-by-sector scanning software. I've run a test utility and it reported my card as faulty. I threw it away - I didn't want that card anymore. Non-realiable card is too much risk for me.
I bought new card (2gb) kingston so I know I won't have to worry if it will crash or something.
found some thrown in the garage...
Four years ago I chucked these hacked SD cards in the garage to hide in a pile of books. Finally dug them out, and am running a "last chance" test on them. I bough them, one from China, and another from a USA seller. I contacted the USA seller, and they send another. It was also bad. Tossed into the garage as no repair solution existed for SD media hacks. Now I see it's RDiskUtility. Will try it anr eport findings along with findings on the new mp3 players
I just bought some MP3 device/cameras from one china seller, one 2 GB unit for $5, the other, a 16GB unit for $6. The prices that I won them at tell me that they may not be fully true to their size.
My primary test is simple, I copy tracks from DVDs I have stored on my theater player's wifi drive. I check for corrupted tracks, which gives me a rough litmus test. If it's not true to size, I'll have to do some futher work.
Based on my experience with cheap Chi-cameras, picture quality of the camera is expected to be bad. Will post full data once I get them.
I bought a 16 gb card from ebay seller cointasdeals.
here is a link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180509991700&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
http://myworld.ebay.com/cointasdeals/
it was supposed to be a kingston 16gb card but i am not sure what it really is.
when i get home i will try to format my card as a lower size and hope that it works. I spoke to my local police and they said that they could not do anything.
Got to get authentic ones
I suggest buy orig memcards. A lot of rigged ones are out in the market. You may buy it for a cheap deal but you may have trouble in the days to come. Quality is important. It can save us more money.

Hi all, i am probably going to buy this..
But i got a strange question, it said "Higher Transfer Rate, Max : 10MB / sec" altough it's a "class n°2" card.. Is this possible?
Do you think it's a great idea to buy this ?
Thank for expert reply

Have this already
Hello,
I already purchased this and I 'm using it for about 5mos now. I have not made any speed comparisons with other cards, but the card itself works fine and I do not have any performance issues so far.
I 'm not sure but I think you may get it for less in ebay...
Hope this helps!
Thank you.. Any other advice are welcomed !
Hi,
I might be wrong but "Higher Transfer Rate, Max : 10MB / sec" might only be the read spead and not the write !
Nogs
in your opinion, which limit capacity will be admit for microSD cards by the Blackstone ?
#5 I hope at least 32
Using the same since two months...
w/o any problem.
Not done speed test but works fine and smoothly.
