Newbies: Read This Before Flashing - G4

It seems that there continues to be, and perhaps will always be a steady stream of newbies coming here...who tend to not read any of the upgrading instructions carefully before flashing a new ROM to their device. Having said that I am not holding my breath hoping that people will read this post.
Everyone must understand that its frustrating to developers and to longtime members to have to answer the same questions over and over again. Some of the members on the forum, me included, often reply to cries for help with "Read the Wiki," and people tend to get upset about it. Some of the developers have even left the forum or closed threads because of these frustrations. I don't blame them.
People must also understand that one of the reasons it is hard to find information on the forum is because of all the clutter due to people posting the same stuff over and over. That is why some posts go unanswered.
For those who do read and have decided that they want to upgrade a G4 device, I am listing a few ways to save yourself from potentially "Bricking" your device.
1) Be cautious of ROMS downloaded from your service providers. They do not tell you wether the ROM is for a G3 or G4. These are most likely to be for a G3. This is the case with the Cingular ROM on HTC's site. Try to put this on a G4 and you will have a "Brick" for sure.
2) Be cautious of ROMS downloaded from other places on the internet. Check the RUU installer's name and look for NOID in the filename.
(i.e. newromupdateutility_wizard_noid) This tells you that this ROM was modified to not check for CID, and most likely the ROM does not change the IPL/SPL parts of the device. In other words its been modded for use on a G4.
3) Don't skip steps.
4) Be sure you know what ROM you have (from #1 & #2) before you do anything else, and if you have to modify a ROM understand everything that has to be done before you do it, it doesn't hurt to double check your steps.
I've seen several people try to flash the PDAViet ROM for the Wizard found on the internet and noticed that they "Bricked" their devices trying to install using shelltool. Had these people known that the ROM was already modded for G4's they would not be taking up space on the forum. Don't blame the tools, if they didn't work for you, you probably skipped some step(s). Help the moderators and other members looking for information keep the forum clean.

im not sure on what exactly shelltools does...help

does it take off everything that is on the rommy thingy?...or what...and f i want to just install it do i have to cid unlock?...( i got aa g3 now) or do i shelltool it...
lets say im going to download farias real thing...to get everything do i install it regular...or shelltool it?
From your questions, you really shouldn't be doing anything with your phone before reading the wiki on this and taking some time to read the forums a bit closer.
i didnt ask that...if u cant answer my question just say so,,,thanks for trying
TaurusBullba wasnt being mean. TaurusBullba was pointing out a few honest truths.
Hypothetically speaking, if someone doesnt know what shelltool does, despite their being a thread with almost 300 posts on using the shelltool then they are obviously not ready to flash anything yet. Furthermore if someone doesnt know which devices the shelltool is designed for then they have again demonstrated that they are not ready to flash their expensive device.
Do as TaurusBullba said and be thankful someone took the time to answer your question in a civil manner.

Just CID unlock your G3, you dont need shell tools for that.
i dont want to cid unlock it..and i cant...hence the reason im using shell tools...i have read the thread before but was looking for clarification...sorry for asking...and the fact that there are 300 posts makes it even easier for some1 not 2 read all the posts...to get all the information...i ditnt think anyone would read all the post to make sure there perfect with it..hence the reason all people can make threads...to post finds...and questions...and again i say...i cant cid unlock my device...does it take off everything that is on the rom?...or what...and if i want to just install the rom the regular way do i have to cid unlock?...( i have a g3 now) or do i shelltool it...lets say im going to use farias real thing...to get everything on the rom do i install it regularly...or shelltool it?

CID unlock your phone and install the normal way. There isnt much point using shelltools with a G3 when you can just unlock it.

The reason some threads are 300+ posts long is because so many topics are covered, so many questions are answered. By reading all the posts in the thread you might find your question is already answered, conversely by not reading all the pages you might miss something very important. For example imagine if someone didnt read the shelltool thread and missed the discussion about the virus version of shelltool, what kind of trouble would they be in then?
so i take it we should read every single page...no thanks

Just the kind of attitude that leads to you not knowing what shelltools does.
i think asking him to read 300 plus pages of anything is asking too much. And he is right that we all can post threads for a reason. But still most of the info he is seeking can easily be answered by reading the first page of the original shelltools thread.
personally i hate when people say "just unlock it" because people like me who can't void the warranty can't unlock it (i have a g3, but used shelltools to try and keep the warranty) This guy has read enough to know that it doesnt cid unlock your device.
to answer his original question, im pretty sure it just flashes the os and ipl and spl or anything (thats what happened with mine) Ive used nottosmarts and xplore with no problems with it. I say just try it and see if you get the full effect.
I see the users frustration with questions such as this, but this is a forum thats known for the way it is always willing to help a new user out. All we ask is the new user just does some research and not be baby fed.
And killacam even if there is a hint of attitude, they just dont want you to brick your phone, so take take it too much to heart
The issue here is that 99% of the people asking about shelltools are people that shouldn't be flashing their phone. You may be one of the exceptions but the lack of information in your posting about what you do know makes it hard to judge.
The fact is that even shell tool (and any unauthorized tool for that matter), can "brick" your phone and most of the time (read a few threads) people blame the people posting these tools. If you are worried about warranty then you should just be happy with your phone's built in OS.

are you talking to me? Why should i be happy with the packaged OS? Why can't i use a workaround that was developed from someone in these forums? In fact, i dont see a reason why anyone wouldn't use shelltools because of the fact that it saves the warranty.
Oh and a lot of programs can brick your phones, even the basic rom update if it's used in the wrong manner. And i don't like the way you went about this post; next time you need help maybe you shouldn't ask it, because that's apparently what you would like everyone else to do. I agree that he shouldnt have looked more at the shelltools thread, but to make a statement about me doesn't make sense.
It's never asking too much of a person to do things if he really wants to do it. Anyway, he doesn't have to read through the whole 300 pages as not every page has the information he needs, just browse through it mate and look for your magic keyword "G3"...
It was worth the 300 pages though, believe me, if I didn't I woundn't be using Core2.0 right now..
i dont think there is a warranty issue here since he wants to upgrade his OS and that would void his warranty (or not?)
the only way to learn is READING and if he doesnt want to read and expect someone else to do it for him thats a bit lazy on your part but here is my advice.....
1)if you can CID unlock your device (if you dont care about your waranty do it) this way you wont have any issues when upgrading to a different ROM
here is a link for some good info about cid unlocking http://www.htcwizardweb.net/node/170
or here you will find lokiwiz
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=249474
2)if your question is what exacly Shell too does (what it does to the .nbk file) thats a question that you shouldnt be asking since you havent been able to flash a rom and that a question for a more experienced user.
3)read the first page of the Shell too thread that should answer all your questions if not be more specific about what you have done and what you can and cannot do this way we can help you directing you to the treads that might help you
4)and if none of this have help you you can PM me. i have flash several G3 and G4 devices and havent bricked any one of them.
As you can see i dont post as much im more of a Reader (the only way to learn) i usually dont post to ask but to help...thats why this forum is wonderful ...hope i helped in some way if not search....read this forum and google are your best friends

no, upgrading the OS through shelltools will not void the warranty. (that is if you change it back before you send it in for repair )
i agree with pretty much everything you said, and that's one thing people need to learn, is that if you read a little bit, things will just absorb and you will then gain some knowledge. these are expensive little machines to be messing around on lol.
The Real Thing won't work on it
You can try, but Faria's Real Thing won't work on a G3 CID-locked device using ShellTool. I tried already. What I did was just CID-Unlocked my G3 a few days ago. If you need to send it in for repairs, you can always lock it back up using the CID-unlocking software called Lokiwiz. Then you can just use the RUU to flash the image

do not claim anything that isn't even your own experience
for example you copypasted this bull**** from another forum post (and which post I've already answered):
"Flashing:
A completely un-documented process. The PocketPC flashed with this tool will literaly be the worst PocketPC in the world (at-aleast at the moment)
1) no warranty, no way to go back
2) the only ROM available are AP3 and AP4. None can put a new ROM on it!
3) no official ROMs anymore
4) no "self cooked" ROMs anymore"

The bull**** was mine but Carty, I've put a SMILEY at the end!
Without smiley is to too "strong" for the Team Effort! To be honest and without using the smiley the complete concept is "It was anxiously awaited and the TEAM released a quick first ROM , but some things are still in developing stage

Delelopers are working to address the problems ,and if you want to have more informations or give your contribution: forum.xda-developers.com, ATHENA section. Now the AP4 flashing process is explained, and CMONEX told us they are releasing the tool to go back!
Carty please, we are on INTERNET, do you remember? Hypertext, WWW, LINKS....
Give the bull**** to the bull**** owners and give to the TEAM the space they deserve for their hard work!
This is a developers forum and they are developing and supporting their ROM. In any case I will suggest to add value to you article, giving some LINKS to the readers!
I was just about to quote sergiopi's reply

He had some questions which were valid from a developers point and not from and end users point of view. The Olinex has answered these points and you have quoted them out of context and without the smiley which, as he points out, completely changes the meaning of the quotes. You also have tried to make it look like they are your comments and the whole point of this thread seems to be to get more visitors to a website no one has heard of or cares about. Go back to your day job and stop talking cr*p.

Though you have mentioned here that this "review" is a round-up of existing posts in these forums, in the actual article you have given the impression that these views are yours. That is incorrect.
A good way of giving credit to the original authors is to clearly state the author's handle and put his/her observations in double quotes. e.g. you could have stated as follows:
As observed by Serigiopi (a senior member of the xda-developer forum)
"Flashing:
A completely un-documented process. The PocketPC flashed with this tool will literaly be the worst PocketPC in the world (at-aleast at the moment)

3) no official ROMs anymore
4) no "self cooked" ROMs anymore"
Last but not the least, do not change any words or smileys in quoted text as that can convey a different impression to what the author intended (as it has done in this case).
Ok, no offense guys, Ive taken that part completely...

Carty..

Newbie Question

I'm certain this question has been posted a few thousand times. But I just got an HD2 again. I've been away from this scene for about 10 months. I was here for the beginning of the SD card integration Android when things didn't work well. I'm back with a HD2 I got from a friend. It has windows mobile 6.5. And I don't even know where to began to get Android on this phone. Here's the info that may help me get pointed in the right direction.
OS version 5.2.21913
Manila version 2.5.201814240
Rom version 3.14.531.1
Radio version 2.15.50.14
That's what's on the phone currently. I tried follow a few threads but they all turned out to be a dead end until I change my SPL version. If anyone can at least get me on the right track so I can at least make some progress that would be great.

Can people please stop just saying "the answer is out there", and actually post links to help future readers? Posts like that are as redundant as a duplicate thread. If you don't have anything constructive to say, please don't say anything.

I agree with you on that.
This is what I did to fix my issue so if someone else had the same problem they can hopefully find the right answers.
My issues was having SPL 2.10.000 on my phone.
I needed to install 2.08.000.
All i needed was to download HSPL3 and then follow the apps prompts and when the options for 2.08.000 SPL or 2.08.000 came up.
I chose the 2.08.000 SPL and it changed my SPL to 2.08.000.
That allowed me to follow DFT tutorial for installing android.
Otherwise it wouldn't allow me to progress forward with my old SPL 2.10.000
Here's the links I followed.

Because its easier to point out to look for it then it is to actually do teh work for them and find it.
It will be better for the OP's in the long run if they learn to look and find the information they want/need instead of posting questions and relying on others. As teh OP stated he foudn what he was looking for and probably learned something in process of doing so.
The best way to learn all the processes is to do research and not to simply create a topic every time they want info.

It still does not help the forum in the slightest. If you have nothing constructive to say then you really shouldn't say anything.
Think about this... If it hadn't been for my comment about unhelpful responses, the OP may never have posted his findings, so you could at least think about encouraging them to do that in the future.
Now, if someone finds this thread through a search they'll find some solid information, not just someone saying "search the forum".
I think we want the same thing here - an easy to use forum where people can find answers easily
For NAND Android you need 2.08.HSPL not 2.08.0000
Run HSPL3 and select 2.08.HSPL
Make sure that the RADIO on the phone is 2.08.50.xx or any .50 above.
With regard to your friend's phone, if they want to do the same, then they have to flash the phone with an 2.08 or 2.10 ROM, as this will bring the SPL down to where HSPL can be run. HSPL doesn't work with SPL 3.03 (which comes with the 3.14 ROM).

Huawei P9 Lite (Android 7) & General questions

Hi! First of all... Sorry for bad English! I am German and was smoking to much in school.
I hope you understand what I mean in this post. So lets begin...
I don`t want to call anything bad here on this forum, or criticize anyone of you. I am very grateful for the many work and time that most of you spend for all of this. But I am a newbie and must write something, that myself and many other newbies are thinking, but not writing, about many threads. As an example,
the Thread "{Android 7 - EMUI 5.0} VNS-L31/L21/L11/L23 C432B329 {FULL/LEAK} [28-11-16]", linked here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hua...t/android-7-emui-5-0-vns-l31-l21-l23-t3513816
I read about this Android 7 firmware and was very interested to flash it. But as a newbie, I wanted to collect as much information as possible about this firmware (general Informations, How to flash, Problems, what to do if it fails, ...). Because I think that this forum is the best at web, I searched for these informations here and began to read everything I could find about it. But on most threads, like my example thread, I have a problem, because I did not understand, if its up to date or not. And if the problems, other users write about are still there, or if they were fixed allready. There are to many posts, where users write about different problems. So it often makes me confused, because I am not sure if answers are for problem user1 posted or for problem that was posted by another user. If its quoted, ok. But its still very difficult to understand what is up-to-date and if problem would be fixed now or not. Sometimes I read all of these posts and at the end I understand nothing anymore, because everyone is writing about different problems. So it feels like chaos for me. Then it happened that sometimes users say that there are no problems anymore, and at next page someone writes that there is still problem. Some users post links to websites, threads or files and next user posts links to websites and files too. And then I am thinking about, if they are writing about same problem, if I need all of these stuff or not, what I must flash first, if problems exist if I flash linked file from user1 or if it might be fixed at linked file from user2, .... Then I asked myself which one of this is the newest and up-to-date and if this was the one I get shown at started post on first page (I mean If it was updated by thread starter or if someone posted a newer version at example page 23 of all replies)? How I know if these informations on page 1 are still up to date? At moment I did not understand if there are still problems, or not. And which of these files to flash, to fix problems. After many days I was reading now, I am still not sure if I could flash this firmware on my Huawei P9 Lite (VNS-L31 C432 B161) without getting problems, I read about. As an example, problems like these:
-Is camera working
-keyboard working
-display showing all ok
-mobile data working
-and others
And I don`t know if I must download and flash the files, posted on first page, to become most newest / most stable version, or if I might must read all pages of this thread, to find something posted, thats newer than information on first page? All together... my final question is: Are these informations and files that were posted on first page, all I need and up-to-date for flashing this firmware?
My greatest wish would be a general thread, where I could find all informations and files categorized in different threads, so that newbies like me could understand it better. As example, the thread "Huawei P9 Lite Firmware Compilations by ErvinSoliven", that were opened today by ErvinSoliven and linked here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/hua...huawei-p9-lite-firmware-compilations-t3517124
I opened it and it shows me all the information (hope soon actually ) I was looking for, without reading all of the replys on many pages. This I think is a very good example thread on how to categorize different themes. And I think it would reduce questions, that were allready asked by other users for 5 or 6 times before. So If someone were willing to invest so much time for things like that, I would be very happy and grateful. Who wants to be that hero?
But at first, it would be the most important thing for me, if someone could post an up-to-date information thread about
flashing Android 7 on P9 Lite (VNS-L31 C432), inclusive
-links to needed files (Recoverys, Images, Fixes for camera..., and how to do it)
-informations what is fixed or still not working
-what to do if I get problems during it
It would really really help me, because reading so much posts, in a language that I did not understand very good, is very hard for me and makes me not sure, if I am doing all of this right or if I might did understand something wrong or choose wrong file, ...
I hope you all understand these things, I want to tell you, in this post here. If not, sorry again for this bad English! I tried my best.
At the end of this post, I want to say something again...
"Thanks" to all the people that have so much patience, spending many time and many work, for this great forum and teaching newbies like me! You are the best! Many thanks!!!
Greetings, 77777772

Can we have a sticky with links to the ROMS and a FAQ?

Is this possible?
Many readers/visitors to XDA would find it handy to have as much information in a clear and concise format and location?
For me, I find it frustrating the S7+ Rooting thread's original guide is less than thorough and is incomplete, plus it's now outdated since the original poster @Nightmare0 created the 200+ thread back in 2020?
Additionally, I came to this thread regarding what I would need to prepare for rooting such as what ROMS I may need (and how to determine what I need). Suffice to say, this thread does not meet my expectations.
No one is stopping you from creating a new thread/guide on how to ROOT the device.
