Help diagnosing a Radio problem... - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Couple of days ago I flashed my Vario II with the HTC 2.05 ROM + 1.38.10 Radio ROM. Before that, I was happily using the SA HTC 1.35 ROM.
After updating the ROM, I noticed that I could send and recieve texts, but not make or recieve any calls. I though it was just a network problem so I spent yesterday in Brighton visitng my sister.
Now, although I couldn't make or recieve any calls at home, when I got down to Brighton I was able to call. When I got home to my girlfriends later that night, I was able to connect to the web and browse a few pages (missed MOTD and Rugby. Needed the scores!).
Back at home today, and I'm still getting the same problem. I've now tried Radio ROM's 1.38.10, 1.35 and 1.27 without any luck.
If I force the signal to GSM, the signal strength shows 2 bars, so pretty weak. If I set it to Auto, it states that 3G is available and at full strength! Clearly its being reported incorrectly?
Now, is it the case that the 3G signal is just about detectable but too weak to send and recieve calls? Because it can detect a faint 3G signal, is that why it appears not to be falling back on GSM? I'm guessing here.
If thats the case, why the hell did I not get any problems with the 1.18 Radio ROM is the SA firmware?
I've found the location of my local T-Mobile Mast, so I'm going to pop over near it so I can rule out a signal problem. But apart from that, is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

Hi there, I seem to be having the same problem.
I have a week old Vario II, as my mobile number has yet to be ported to Tmobile I am still using my old phone.
However, evening I tried making a call from my Vario II and just received 3 beeps and a hang up. When the intended caller tried to call me back the phone rang but again ended the call after 1 ring. I tried a couple of different SIM cards with the same results.
I had SIM unlocked and SuperCID'd the handset a few days ago, and thought I may have buggered something up along the way so I done a hard reset. This time the 3G icon didn't appear but I was able to make calls. A few minutes later the 3G icon appeared and once again I was back to not being able to make/receive calls.
Gurubumsmack, have you managed to resolve your issues at all ?
Also being a bit wet behind the ears with the Hermes, what OS, Radio builds would you recommmend ?
Thanks, Dan

Try forcing the Band to GSM instead of Auto (3G) and see what happens.
Mine is now working perfectly with the 1.38.10 Radio. I left it on GSM for a couple of days and then slapped it back to Auto (3G). Has been fine for about a week now touch wood.
The only fault I can put it down was a local transmitter issue.
I'm currently using the HTC 2.11 WM5 AKU3.3 ROM, which comes with the 1.38.10 Radio. Stability is top notch and speed great.
I decided to hold off flashing to WM6 until development on that settles down a bit. Literally a new ROM being released every week over there!

It's true that 2.11 WM5 AKU3.3 combined with 1.38.10 RADIO is rocking stable...

Cingular 1.34 ROM update UMTS issues

I wanted to know if anyone is experiencing similar issues.
I have a Hermes 100 O2 with a recently updated 1.34 Cingular ROM.
I also live in an EDGE area that borders a UMTS area.
What I've noticed is that whenever I transition from one area to the next (like in the car) I have had everything from lost calls, to bluetooth functionality dropping, to having the phone lock up and having to do a soft reset to get function restored.
Once I'm inside the area, the phone acts normal. It's just ANY transistion from UMTS to EDGE or visa versa is when I get this behavior.
I was on the Dopod 1.23 ROM previously and experienced none of this.
Anyone with ideas or similar experiences?
i downgraded to v1.31. on v1.34, when i use file explorer to look at files in storage card, it also freeze/lockup.
i believe v1.31 is more stable. also it' aku 2.6!
Interesting thought.
I know Sleuth255 is running 1.31. Maybe that's why.
I may go that way.
I am daily transitioning from EDGE to UMTS usingn 8525 ROM 1.34 and no problems
Are you in iddle mode or dedicated mode?
Are making a voice call or data ?
For voice it should work both ways unless the network parameters were not optimized in your area
For data it will work only from 3G to 2G with a slight interuption
if you are on EDGE and transitioning into UMTS it will not work. you will stay on EDGE though and no interuption

I was only referring to voice. Once per week I make a trip that starts in an Edge zone, enter a small 3G Zone, exit that zone back to Edge for about 15 miles then enter a 3G zone at the end of the trip.
The main thing I have noticed is that whatever zone I am in when I make the call, the phone usually works until the call is over. Then I have had everything from bluetooth drops to signal failure, once the entire phone locked up.
All of those scenarios result in me having to soft reset the phone.
On one occasion, I received a call while in the small 3G zone and upon leaving the zone, the phone dropped the call. In fact the person called me back 3 times and each call was dropped after about 2 minutes.
I'm not sure what to think at this point.
The fact that 3G Zone 1 is King of Prussia PA (Cingular PA headquarters) and the 2nd 3G zone is Philadelphia PA
has me thinking, they may still be trying out different things as these areas are 3G aware but not updated on the Cingular coverage map yet.
I had much better consistency on the Dopod 1.23 ROM. It never missed a call or dropped transitioning from one zone type to another.
Why don't you just set the phone to stay on the EDGE network and not switch to 3G? This should solve your problems. I do this often, though not for the reasons you discussed but to save battery life! I can't even get a full 12 hours on 3G these days in NYC!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with that problem. I got a full 7 hours this AM. I was using LogMeIn for 4 of them, but I was really surprised at how fast the battery drain was.
1. All 3G software devices including Hermes are still buggy and new releases are still coming. CW is focusing oh the LG CU500 for the launch with Video Share. service
2. The Cingular 3G network is going an optimization campaign which might last until January. Ericsson and Lucent patches to remedy some major issues are scheduled for the end of the year. The GSM/EDGE R99/HS two-way handover is not yet optimum.

Good Idea.
I guess the fact that it seemed to work better on an asian ROM than Cingular's own ticked me off a bit.
The clear thought is to force EDGE for the time being and see what develops with 3G around here in the near future.
I also saw this, especially the call dropping and then each following call also dropping - all this when I often had excellent coverage. I haven't tried Cingular's ROM though.
EDIT: I tried the Cingular ROM and after about 15 mins (plus the amount of time to download the HTC ROM again) I am reloading HTC's 1.18 TyTN ROM. For some reason, my phone wouldn't stay connected to the network longer than about 30 seconds, then it would drop the connection and stay disconnected for minutes - sometimes I had to reboot to get my network back!
I hope HTC releases an update soon, and I hope Cingular gets their **** together and fixes transitioning between GSM and UTMS.

Were you in a 3G area when you tried the Cingular ROM?

Yes, but I tried it in both GSM and UTMS ("Auto") modes.
Cingular ROM downgrade error
Good morning, i have a Vodafone PDA1605 (TyTN etc.) I've updated the ROM with new Cingular version available on this site (1.34.502, bootloader 1.06), now I need to downgrade to older version with same CID (1.30.502, bootloader 1.04) but I receive an ERROR "Wrong Vendor ID" every time i retry to flash the ROM (following the procedure... restarting the update without disconnecting the PDA).
I've also tryed to put other ROM with bootloader 1.06 (new Vodafone FRA... i will upload when tested) but I receive the Error: "Wrong Model.."
Could someone help me?

To get around this issue, it seems like the consensus is to install the original ROM that came with your phone. Hopefully that will put your bootloader back at 1.04. (Your Vendor CID must match exactly when doing anything with 1.06)
Once you get it back to your original ROM, you should then be able to move up.
all of this is assuming your original ROM was a 1.04 BL
Hope this helps.
Is there an easy way to switch from GPRS to UMTS?
l3G3ND, I have the same problem as you but I don't have the Cingular Rom. I have the original Rom (including original radio Rom) that came on the HTC Tytn and I get same issue as you. Only difference that I don't have to soft reset.. I just have to turn the phone radio off and back on again in Comm Manager.
Just letting you know so you can see that perhaps it's not the Cingular Rom??

Radio 1.47 and 1.48 problems with Rogers Toronto

Last week I updated my Radio to 1.48.
A few days ago I started doing tests by calling my PDA from my home number (testing the callerID function of Slide2Unlock) and realized that almost all calls would ring and then go to voicemail without my mobile ringing. Looking into it more and talking to people that call me on a regular basis, I realized that I am getting a lot of missed calls on my phone.
I reverted back to 1.47 and did the same tests with the same number of missed calls.
Going back to 1.43, my mobile now rings on the first ring, every time.
Seems like 1.43 is the better Radio for Rogers (Toronto)
I don't think it is only Rogers.
I was running 1.47 for a while ... a lot of network disconnects, so I thought the upgrade to 1.48 would make it better ... it made it worse, WAY worse. I am now back on 1.43 with no problems at all
1.48 perfect for me with FIDO. (or rogers if you want to be technical). It is not the Radio. I have been testing various ROMs. Some work better than others with the radios. I find those ROMs what were cooked with the PTT removed has issues.....
If I use ROMs that were originally without the PTT, I experience no issues what so ever with 1.48.
maybe you can get walshieu to give you 1.49 ?

Hello Landyman,
As you know there is a problem in SA on all the radio ROM versions.
Leaf are aware of it as it is network related.
They will shortly be releasing a WM5 and WM6 version with a new radio specific to our network.
At present it is on test with the networks.

I recently switched to the Sleuth Developer v3 ROM, does it fit the above category? I can always revert bach to the Schaps 3.57a ROM and try 1.48 again...

You mentioned it in another thread as well, IIRC.
From my experience, with our current situation, 1.43 works best (for me in any case)
I used 1.48 for about a week, had problems with reestablishing connections and some missed calls. Switched back to 1.47 with no issues. The Radio that rogers came out with for there system is 1.42, unfortunatly there is no update for this Radio until there is an update from Rogers. The only way to get it is to buy the phone from Rogers. And before it is asked it can't be dumped.
Same problem,

Would you recommend 1.47? I used it for a short while and it seemed OK. Did not test it as thoroughly as 1.48.
BTW, thank you for yor Rogers settings cab. Just found it yesterday and it saved me a lot of manual setting up.
As much as I am sorry others were having this problem, I'm glad I'm not the only one! After trying both 1.47 and 1.48 and missing calls to the point that my wife thought I was ignoring her, I finally went back to 1.43 and have been golden. Soooo.... you're not the only one.

I too missed about 6 calls today with 1.47, I am going back to 1.43, That Radio with Rogers has always been reliable.
Yes.
3.57a seems to be no issue for me.

In Montreal area,I tried 1.47 few days ago, often i had to dial twice to make a call, and the earpiece volume is lower than others. then change to 1.43, i missed many calls, but phone was ON, with reception, but all calls went to VM. then i changed it back to 1.41 yesterday. everything back to what a PHONE should be. sometimes, simpler is better...
With Fido using a 8525 with BB connect in Calgary. I was until recently, using the last wm5 ATT ROM which worked with BB connect. Missed calls with 1.48, so went back to 1.43. Now with vp3g wm6 BB connect version, decided to try 1.48 and the same missed calls issue. Back to 1.43 and everything is fine.
I noted this problem back on the 12th of July and was told by numerous members of this community I was crazy, "the radio's wouldn't have been released if it had this problem".

Now there's several threads popping up with users finally noticing this problem.. One person has suggested those suffering with this issue have older SIM cards - which I do - so maybe this is the problem? (Don't see how, but whatever, worth noting the age of my card.)
My Sim is at least 3 years old now... I'll play with a newer sim when I get a chance and report back.
I also had issues with 1.48 missing calls and losing signal for long periods of time while driving through bad coverage areas. Switched back to 1.40.30.00 and all is well now, receive all calls and when i drive through bad coverage area quickly reacquires signal

My SIM card is about 4 months old - definitely not an issue with an old card.
I wish I had noticed your earlier posts on the topic, I would never have upgraded to 1.47 or 1.48 if I had.
Do you have one of the "newer" HSDPA SIMs? I'm not sure if much has changed in the SIMs from older gen to newer gen - but I haven't noticed the dropped call issue with 1.48 and Schaps latest ROM.

Yes, I have the new HSDPA sim. Have not tried 1.48 with Schaps latest (installed it today) but am hessitant to upgrade the radio in case it does not work. I am back at work now and cannot afford any missed calls.
UPDATE: Installed 1.48 and tested - even though my phone immediately detected a 3G network (does not do it with 1.43) upon calling myself, 2 out of the 3 calls resulted in a missed call. Reverting back to 1.43.
UPDATE2: Reverted back to 1.43 and tested. My phone did not immediately register the network as 3G but all calls (3) rang to my phone on first ring.

Best Radio for 3 in sweden ?

Anyone tested radio roms in .se ?
I think that 1.47.00.10 is the best yet.
All roms above disconnects me when driving around in car..
Same problem for me.
I've tried every radio from 1.51 and worked my way downwards. I'm currently trying 1.35.0.11.
The problem with dropped calls during driving disappeared, but now i get dropped calls when standing still instead. If I do a soft reset, the phone works normally for some time before it starts dropping calls again.
Tested new 1.47.30.10 ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326995
Each radio is calibrated for the network it was designed for. So, I would first test the radios that were made for the 3 network in Sweden as they will most likely produced the best results; all other radios would produce mixed/subjective results.
And how do I know which radios that are made for 3;s network in Sweden ?
I've tried the radio version that I found in one of the instructions on 3's support-page (1.38.00.10)
http://www.tre.se/upload/Programvara/mob/Instruktioner_uppgradHTCTyTN.pdf
That didn't work any better than the rest I've tested.
1.35.0.11 worked like a charm for some days, with minor bugs, until just recently when the phone began dropping calls again..
I will try with 1.47.30.10 later today.
1.47.30.10 worked in the same way as the other "newer" radios did:
Not moving = Good!
Moving = Dropped calls. You CAN NOT be in a moving vehicle since roaming between your operators antennas or changing from 3G to GSM disconnects the call immediately.
The "older" radios works fine for a random timelimit, then a soft reset is needed. Roaming doesn't seem to disconnect calls.
Would it help if i changed ROM / ExtROM?
Current setup:
Swedish WM 6, downloaded from HTC (3.54.263.2)
Radio: 1.27.00.00 (have tried every radio version that is newer without success..)
ExtROM: 3.54.263.102
Operator: 3
Area: Stockholm / Sweden
Fine. But I have 1.50 with Telia it works gr8

Take a risk?

I am having issues with my Vario II supplied by T-Mobile UK. I have changed the OS ROM many times and have used Black and Schaps mainly. Regardless of the OS ROM I have had an issue with retrieving calls that are on call waiting.
I previously upgraded the Radio rom on a my original handset and suffered from dropped calls, calls not coming through when it appeared I had a full signal etc. so decided after the unit was replaced not to touch th Radio again.
I have seen the threads regarding 1.5 Radio ROMs with lots of GSM issues and therefore am even more relucant to change Radio ROMs.
Should I take the risk of changing the Radio ROM to try resolve my issues with call waiting???
FYI, when i try to accept a call that is waiting the handset often (very often) hangs and then it drops both calls. After about a minute the radio appears to reset and it reports no signal for a few seconds before recovering and I can make a call once again.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Aidan

best radio for O2?

First off, I did try to search for O2 but it is too short for this forum's search engine.
I have a Hermes that was originally on T-Mobile but I have used it on Vodafone for months without issue. I recently took a new job and they are on O2 but I have no end of issues with the phone being able to hold onto a decent signal. It constantly drops everything (phone and gprs/edge) and then reconnects sometimes minutes later. I also constantly miss calls because it won't drop the data connection in favor of the call.
Thinking that the phone might be on the way out, I tried it with my Voda sim and it works briliantly again. So aside from a horrible O2 network, could there be a better radio rom tailored to O2?
Unfortunately radios are hit and miss, you just have to try a few to see which one works best for you.
