Not bothering with custom Wm5? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

I remember that yall discovered the ability to customize hermes roms around the same time that Wm6 was leaked. Did anyone ever bother to make a stable/custom Wm5 Rom? going back to the cingular rom is not super appealing b/c of the remapped PTT key and bloatware. all of the tricks are available from the wizard(pagepool ect..) did anyone ever cook a rom?
am I correct in assuming that skipping customization during the first boot of the cingular rom will allow me to reclaim the infamous button 5?
I cant deal with SOD and shaky stability / bluetooth in Wm6 anymore.
The wiki seems to only have Wm6 roms.

Upgrading TyTn with Cingular Rom

I'm currently a cingular customer with a Tytn. I was wondering if there's any real benifit to upgrading to the Cingular Rom or if I'm better just sticking with HTC's Rom?
From what I've read - you loose the functionality of the 5th button (which a hack has recently been developed to regain that) and that the video button stops working (as well as loosing the video chat functionality all together). Not that I use the front video cam much but does this mean that the video camera doesn't function at all?
So far what little I've read makes me wonder what why I would want to use the cingular rom (YYYYEeeeaaahhhhh - I can have another branded OS!). I think I must be missing something important to loose the functionality of some buttons and possibly the front camera - I can't believe everybody just wants that cingular logo all over the place so there must be something big I'm missin here
Hi, I must be missin something also..cause I haven't a clue either why someone would go to the cingular rom or for that matter any branded rom.
I'm sure that there are a lot of people looking for better performance, stability and/or resolution of annoying issues like screen alignment
Whether any of these can be resolved by using a different ROM version remains to be seen.
Ok, I'll field some answers here.. Why did I go with the Cingular rom? (reasons not necessarily in order of importance). First let me say that my operator is Cingular and I'm running the 1.31 AKU2.6 Cingular release with the 1.13 radio.
1. No more roaming triangles on Cingular's network.
2. Better Radio. I have much better reception with this ROM
3. Better overall performance
4. Those nagging low battery tones are fixed
5. Better A2DP performance (although I believe its related to #3)
6. The "won't come back from powersave" bug is fixed
From a branding perspective, I aborted the Cingular customization, instead loading the TyTN extRom and I'm happy to report that there is zero Cingular branding on my TyTN still.
What did I loose? Pressing the video call button doesn't bring up the video call application (yet.... heheheheh). This isn't a priority issue for me though since Cingular doesn't have the infrastructure to support video calling.
btw: to see how well your front video camera works, go here and load up the CoolCamera 1.15 beta. As a proof of concept, this little applicaton is huge. Video calling may never catch on in the US you see, however as the link shows, the front camera is api connected which means that vendors like Skype or the next iteration of Mobile Communicator will very likely support it as well. IMO this is the real reason for a front video camera.
I can hardly wait...
@sleuth
Why didn't you do the 1.34 cingular rom? I am trying to decide if I should load one of the cingular rom's or wait for the next htc rom. I am currently running the htc tytn shipped rom with the 1.16 radio.
I had heard that the next htc tytn rom may include aku3..any thoughts

Thanks - sounds like some good reasons to use the Cingular Rom.
So quick follow up on the Video camera - it sounds like it still functions -the button just no longer brings up the video camera ap (is this key mapable on the cingular version or do you loose the button all together currently?)
Thanks again!
@chymmylt:Right now, the video call button is lost (unmappable by any applicaton). When I get a few minutes I'll work on it...
@eagle 1: I jumped on the 1.31 ROM just before the 1.34 ROM came out. AFAIK, the only fix in the 1.34 ROM that wasn't in 1.31 has to do with the battery level display after return from powersave mode. In v1.34, instead of starting at 100% and then dropping down to the correct level, it now starts at "unknown" then changes to the correct level.
Also, the 1.31 ROM is an AKU 2.6 vs. AKU 2.3 release. Nothing different here other than bragging rights I guess
Anyway, the small differences between the ROMs wasn't worth the 2 hour downgrade/upgrade process. I'll reflash again when the latest TyTN ROM is released which will be an AKU 3.x variant.
I upgraded my JasJam radio but I did not anything else. My device seems to be pretty stable with I-mate rom right now and I don't feel like loosing my video call button. I am waiting for AKU 3.x before investing the time it takes to do upgrades now. I could not believe how long it took just for the radio.
It's not like you can Video Call on Cingular's network anyway...
Agreed, but I can use the button for other things.

Why not? I haven't tried it, as I know no one else who has a TyTN...
Cingular's network is a "best effort" data delivery infrastructure and lacks the QOS enhancements needed to support video calling. This is according to austin_boy (the source for all Cingular ROMS here).
From what I've heard from Boy Genius, they disabled it on their network, so unless someone can figure a way out, it's not going to work.

True but I spend a 3rd of the year in Europe where I can use it (not that I have but I have a number of friends who have phones capable) and it'd be nice to have the ability if I need it
Anyone managed to downgrade from Cingular 1.31 (bootloader 1.06) tried all the tricks on wiki but without success. Probably its because of bootloader version, as from 1.04 is quite easy to go back with rom. Do You have any ideas?
@lukjod: you need a rom matching your CID with bootloader 1.04 to be able to downgrade.
The question is were to get it.... and in the past i remember with the s100 to hack the files and put t-mob003 (my device code) in the files to flash even a rom that was not correct... Any chance doing this also?

The video call feature is still there (pressing soft button that says "Video Call" on the Phone app works just fine). You get this back when you reload the TyTN extrom instead of the Cingular. Just no link to the physical button. I need to play around on a ROM that has a working video call button to see how it's done before I can fix this.

So if I upgraded to Cingulars rom but used the extrom from the TyTN it would look and have all the functions of the TyTN roms (except the 2 keys with mapping issues - one you've kindly fixed) but the benifits of a more currently tweeked OS? Aside from having the mapping issues and having to downgrade to upgrade in the future (but being a TyTN I shouldn't have problems with this right?) are there any other downsides to doing this?
Thanks
Nope... other than the fact that the upgrade process itself is a bit risky. This is because it takes 25 minutes to accomplish and any interruptions during the process itself can brick your device.
Close all apps, disable screen saver and use a rear USB port when flashing then walk away and go do something else for 25 minutes or the suspense will drive you nuts.....

Cingular 8525 w/Cingular ROM 1.31.502.1

Title says it all. I had tried the HTC South African ROM, and liked it, but I couldnt get the keyboard to correspond with the 8525 symbols. Searched all day and decided that it wasn't worth the minimal speed increase. Instead of going back to the ROM I had, the 1.34...ROM, I decided to go with this one since it has AKU 2.6. I am so glad I did!
I live in Queens, and 3G has NEVER worked in my house. Only certain times throughout my day I would see the U symbol on my phone. And it was in south Middle Village, not near my house. Since I upgraded/downgraded the ROM, not only do I have U in my house, but after 8 dslreports.com tests, I averaged over 800 kbps and peaked at 972Kbps! Perhaps its a coincidence that U is up and running here today, but I seriously doubt it! I also upgraded the radio to 1.20 and noticed a slightly less wait time for 'locating" in PIE. The OS seems faster as well, but not much faster, than the newer Cingular ROM. To any Cingular 8525 owners out there this ROM is definitely worth a look!
There must be a reason that they decided 3 WEEKS LATER to go back to AKU 2.3. Is there a bug in this ROM that I haven't discovered yet?
The radio upgrade is what made UMTS more accessible. The OS portion of the ROM didn't have any effect on your wireless. AKU 2.6 is reported to have problems, but I never personally tried it or tried to track them after I read MS Voice Command wouldn't work with it. There was a lot of discussion about AKU 2.6 in the Wizard forum, you might find some info there.
Did you install the newer radio code independently, or did it come with the South Africa ROM?
I noticed the increase in UMTS accessibility after upgrading the ROM. I upgraded the radio only to minimize the "locating" delay in PIE, activesync, etc. It mihgt be a coincidence, who knows.
Cyberon works fine w/this ROM. I never really cared fpr VC, it uses too much RAM and is a lot slower than cyberon IMO
The reason for the thread was to hopefully find out what the problems are that have been reported. Seemse strange that Cingular made a new ROM a few weeks after and went back to 2.3
I don't know why they went back to aku 2.3, but for the problem you where having with the keyboard, you could have solved it by installing a cab in the cingular's extrom (don't remember now exactly wich one).

Yeah, I had searched, and searched, and found one of your posts that spoke about a cab with "keypad.." in the name, but I downloaded TWO Cingular ExtROMS and that file was not in either of them. When I first installed the 1.35 ROM, I replaced its extrom with the newest Cingular extROM, to no avail. I don't mind though, I like this ROM so far and it hasn't caused any issues for me. And its Cingular-issued, so all of the settings were there for me.

oe xv6800 rom w/ gps enabled?

hey guys, i have the dcd on my xv6800 loving it. got me back and forth on a 4 hour trip flawlessly, even when we went searching for poi's the old fashioned way and it redirected. thanks to dcd and tomtom.
well, i want my wife to have the gps feature on her xv6800 as well. but is it possible for dcd or someone to create a rom, pretty much unchanged other than adding the gps drivers.
my wife likes the overall setup of the stock rom and its stability. i just want her to have the gps.
can anyone help? and if there is an obvious answer, please excuse my ignorance. i did do searches, here and google.
thanks guys/gals
what do you mean setup?
you can add everything back to a "dcd rom" to make it almost "stock" as far as programs go i personally have a verizon xv6800 with the 3.27 radio and DCD's 2.2.6 rom and having no problems at all if you need help with something feel free to PM me.
The 2.2.0 seems to be the most stable of the DCD roms and to answer your question, there's no official radio with GPS and therefor the custom rom, bootloader, and radio all have to be cooked, at least for the moment.

Rogers TyTN

Hey i have a ROGERS HTC TyTN, i dont really care to unlock it or whatsoever. I know the first thing to do before modding is to load the hard SPL app on there to prevent bricking...
My question is after loading the Hard SPL APP what WM 6.1 Rom would you guys recommend using? i am looking for something which does come with any bugs or the least if possible. Also would upgrading wm 5 to 6.1 interfere with my radio?
And
Which Radio Stack would best suit my phone?
Thanks
anyone with help on this?
Just upgraded radio to this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408523
I will report the results and opinion today. about the 6.1 i suggest to look through the latest releases and see which ROM is for you. i usually prefer to go with light versions, as i have a stack of soft that i prefer. and most of the HTC apps can be downloaded from the http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=260
Alright i installed
HERMES WM6.1 ROM V17 - Build 20749.1.4.0
But When i listen to music over my earpiece it will play for a few minutes and stop playing until i turn the screen back on then it will go through that process again any help on that?

Where & How do I get WM6 (or 6,5) NOOOOB

Hello,
I just picked up an old ATT 8525 because my 4 year old lost my old basic cell & and it looked like the 8525 was lots of fun to mess with (as per YouTube...consummate tinkerer)
Ive read a million threads here and elsewhere and surfed a thousand sites and cannot find WM6 4 HTC hermes/8525 (let alone 6.1 or 6.5)
-Is wm6 a big improvement over Wm5
-Is WM6 needed for all these great roms?
-Will WM6.5 (if I can find and load) work with these roms and this 85?
-And of course Where do you get either (not from HTC anymore).
Regards PK
OK, I hunted this down on rapid-share. Its about 56 megs and presumably will work on the 8525. Look right? pretty esoteric.
RUU_Hermes_CINGULAR_WWE_3.62.502.3_6275_1.54.07.00_108_UOOS_SVN05_Ship.exe
Is there any generic 6,1 or 6,5 for this.
Regards, PK
Mate, before flashing anything you need to Hard SPL your Hermes. Put Hard SPL V7 on from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722 , go to page 116, post 1160 to do it without using the PC, mostly.
Go to the WM06 section to find the newer roms, 6.5 are the latest.
But before you do any of that, you need to read the upgrade guide on how to flash your phone. Do a search, thats what its there for.
Cheers...
Thanks,
BTDT (been there done that). Read everything I can find here, there and everywhere, Have download the right stuf f I think (at it 3 days lad)
Since I posted I have found two versions of 6.0 for this phone. One (slightly larger) here somewhere I think. And one through a more circuitous route. Be interested to see the upgrade sequence going to Wm 5 to WM 6.5. Thanks for the tip.
Hermes_radio_only_1.56 has me a little confused, one post seams to say don't mess unless your life is at stake, but elsewhere, with Hard_spl_v7.5 (I guess) it's implied no prob. As best I can tell theres a trade off, newer radio, better reception, more battery life &, maybe worse camera performance. I'd like a balance. the camera is important to me.
'Nother bit of confusion, I have a new, unactivated sim card. Activate it first, unlock it, do all the other stuff first, does it matter?
Regards, PK
Ok I get it,
1) Install hard spl
2) Install first Att lite
3) Install WM 6.5....your favorite flavored ROM
4)Install different radio when you really know what your doing
PK
Yep, you got it, however, if you're using the sd card method to install the roms, its slightly different than installing Hard SPL V7, drop the steps using sspl.exe. You now have Hard SPL, you don't need to use Soft SPL anymore and its safer not to.
As you said, Don't mess around with the radio unless you know FOR SURE its gonna help. This is the one thing that practically guarantees a brick if it stuffs up during the flash.
It will effect signal reception, thats all. And always use sd card method to flash the radio rom.
Camera is not affected by Radio Rom. Look for a rom with a good camera cooked in. use the WM06 section of the Hermes forum to find WM06/6.1 & 6.5 roms.
Cheers...
Thanks D,
That was fun.
Oddly, my phone and $5.95 SIM card arrived simultaneously yesterday. Reread the HTC guide(s)., Ran through my recipe and it worked, The flashes went remakably easy and fast.
The only thing that still doesn't work is the camera zoom. Seems intuitive enough but I admitably have not read the manual.
I burned in "Golden globe 6.5". Little sluggish on this old 8525 but I'd expect that. Doesn't do all the tricks I've seen on Youtube but beats the holy 'ell out of stock WM 5 it came with.
Thanks for you help,
Regards, PK
hermes 6.5
Hey ...
If you want to try a lite 6.5 rom for hermes please try mine. it runs well even after touchflo is installed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=495280
I'd also appreciate feedback and comparisons to other flavors.
Nice work, might do. I'm currently semi-bricked, been loading & re-loading roms about 3-4 a day.
Does it come in any color than green??
Regards, PK
