Current ROM backup how to? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Hi everyone. I've been reading for a while and think I've now got enough threads, tools and comments to go ahead and upgrade my Vodafone Hermes to WM6 and one of the cooked ROMs arround.
My only concern is that I still do not have a clear picture about if it's possible to have a full backup of my current ROM as is today in the event my upgrade process is not succesfull (been positive here . I thought I could just pack my current ROM into my PC so I could later restore it but not at all sure how.
Any threads, links or tools would be appreciated. Thanks to everyone for their unvaluable work in this forum... what would we do without it!!!

Absolutely ! SPB Backup and Sprite - two packages I know off. I've being using SPB for quite a while now. It does a complete snapshot of your device an in case your new ROM installation does not go smooth or you simply are not happy with it - just reflash with the orginal base ROM and execute the backup.exe file to return to the point where you started from. So the important thing to remember - before doing anything - make sure you have the original distro base of a ROM you are running right now and if you'll be flashing your device - ensure you have Hard SPL installed.

what is distro base of current rom and also hard spl? Sorry... I am so new to this world of flash upgrades and everything... I am also unsure about the official "official" release of the ROM that was postedlast month for the 8525. First question is... If this doesnt work or I dont like it... can i reinstall the upgrade that will be coming out that is official?

it is very simple. Just do a search for hermes unlocker. The current version is v3a. Or just follow this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665&page=2
You will have to download that unlocker application and follow the instructions. After that, hard SPL and unlocker will be installed automatically. Then you need to buy Sprite Backup software for PPC (there is no good hacked version out there) and backup the phone using that ROM backup feature. After backup is done, it is safe to proceed to ROM upgrade. I would strongly recommend to do the backup before the upgrade because it's much safer. It will save you a lot of troubles if something goes wrong.

SPB Backup does full rom?
I've read some bad comments about SPB backup. I though it only performed backup of data and config and not full ROM, but Moisha's comment sounds like I am not right and is valid to restore from a faulty ROM update.
In any case I understand those are the 2 options and there is no free software available. If that is the case the Sprite Backup looks better to me so I'll have to diff into it.
If I go ahead I'll try to post something about backups as I've not found much info for newbies like me and this is probably the first thing to be done.
Thanks.

I upgraded my device to a new ROM. I did full backup with SPB Backup when I had an old ROM. Will I still have the new ROM after restoring backup? Or it changes to old ROM?
One of the backup software can be used for ROM upgrading. Check the forum on the backup guide by Menneisyys (I think).
I have found only one backup software which have posibility restore after ROM ugrade, it was Sprite backup 5.1. I tried it. It works but very bugy... I was need reinstal all programs manualy...

did you follow the upgrade mode faq? most ppl dont thats why the restores buggy. If you follow the faq from start to finish (including backing up the oldROM without pop accounts) then the restore should be perfect after a ROM upgrade

newbie question on upgrade

hey guys,
please don't get angry with me.
I am just a newbie about upgrading PPC roms. (I was using PalmOS devşces for 6 years until last month)
On my Imate Jasjam I just made a "radio rom update" ; it works fine...
But when it comes to OS updates I am total newbie.
Now I plan to upgrade to WM6 rom but I am too excited. I don't know if I am "ok" to do it.
Do you think the WM6 rom for HTC Hermes works fine on Imate Jasjam ?
(as it is only OS update it should be, but just to be sure)
Any problems that may occur with my Jasjam ?
One other question is:
I know that I have to hard reset before the update. But then, can I restore from my "SK tools" backup over the WM6 OS ?
And last one:
I see on the Radio ROM page that there is a newer radio rom which has "GPS enabled" mark. Also, I see in some of the member's signatures :
"RADIO ROM: 1.35.00.11 (Trinity GPS enabled)"
What does that mean ? Is there really a GPS in all Hermes devices ? Should I only upgrade to that rom to be able to use it ?
Btw, I am sure that most of this is already discussed in one of those very long threads but I am very excited and I wanted to ask it directly.
So please don't flame me...
Thanks for your help.
Hey, there's almost a tacit rule that you have to do a certain amount of reading to be a bona fide member of XDA! Some of your questions indicate that you have done very little... where do you get the idea that you have to hard reset before doing an update!? Start at the WIKI!!
I'll give you this one though... it's an extremely bad idea to retore from a backup after updating the ROM.

thank you.
however, I don't understand why it's a bad idea.
I have many apps installed.
To install them from scratch would be too difficult.
I don't think the places in the registry would be different in new rom.
am I wrong ?
my word of advice, If you're not willing to spend time, then upgrade the ROM is NOT for you.
btw, spend a day or 2 to read the WIKI & some of the stickies.

You are wrong. As others have said, do some reading before you take the plunge. You'll be glad you did.
And if you keep CAB files on your external storage card, reinstalling apps isn't all that difficult. Trust me, I reflash ALL THE TIME and getting up and running after a flash only takes me about 10 mins. Of course, I don't use half the crap everyone else uses; I mainly stick to a few utils and my corporate email.
Thanks for all of your replies...
Mostly they are discouraging ((
I have read many threads about the upgrade process and I couldn't understand why "upgrade the ROM is NOT for me"
It seems simple as running the exe on the PC.
is there something I missed ?
because if you run the wrong exe file from your pc you will end up with a really expensive paper weight
And you've indicated that you're too lazt to reinstall your favorite apps unless you can simply restore from a back-up.
Hint, experiment... I know which apps will work from my storage card without need a fresh install after Rom upgrade or hard reset.
concur: changing ROMs is like crack... once you start, you're hooked
Best to get proficient with the reloading process since eventually you'll wind up being able to do it in your sleep. I actually reloaded from a cold reset while working out at the Gymn once.... (capital G in geek here...)
thank you for all of your replies.
then I will wait some more to see if a more stable wm6 rom is available.
maybe kyphur can release one which is even better than his forst one
then I will hard reset my hermes (as I will need space on it for the update)
and then run the exe from my computer.
then I will have to install all of my apps from beginning.
I hope I don't lose data

back-up rom

Yes, that's what I do. I use spb sprite myself but there are other good backup software. After trying a new ROM, if I decide to go back I simply flash back the previous ROM, and do a restore.
mickey.lez, as eaglesteve mentions, there are other alternatives. I use SPB Backup. It has a ROM upgrade mode. That way, when I change ROMs, which I do more often here than changing underwear , I don't have to reinstall my software and email settings. And of course, if you want to revert to a prior ROM as you ask, you can do that too.
Another program for backup is Rescobackup , a simple program that you can set your data to backup and etc... but after i install un-official ROMs on my unit , it doesn't work properly and crash on every restore ...
But with official ROM working very well
I'm going to test SPB backup
thank's you all
i'll try it away and tell you what have done
flash back to WHAT previous ROM?

That's good, but how can I arrange to have the 'previous ROM' available to flash back? I don't have another copy of the ROM contents that came with the machine.
Thanks for all you do!

Niki ROM dump

Any updated howto? There's a page in the wiki listing some tool (the URL to that is dead now though), but it's unclear for me how to use it, even though it's described pretty detailed.
I want to dump my ROM because today, after many attempts, long searches and waiting I've finally gotten my ROM just the way I like it, and I want to be able to reflash it as is. I'm now using Sprite Backup (came free with my device), but that doesn't do a full ROM backup, so I'd have to flash back the ROM and then use Sprite Backup to restore my own stuff.
Any help on this would be really appreciated

flash

Before I flash my phone for the very first time, I need to know some things.
I know there are threads who give info, but they aren't always up-to-date or handeling about my phone.
So I want to know, I heard about a third version of HSPL.
What are the things that I need to do?
If I want to install a new rom, I first install HSPL, then the rom, but do I have to install something like a radio too? or something else?
Will a custom rom always work in my language (BE/DUTCH),
and which rom is good for texting (no lag etc).
I want a clean and smooth rom, with not much BS. Any advice?
I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm stuck with them for a long long time and I want to be well prepared.
Version of OS: 5.2.21869
Manila: 2.5.19211619.0
ROM: 1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD
RADIO: 2.06.51.07
Follow this thread step by step and you cant go wrong.
Its link you to HSPL3 and anything else you might need.
It tells you how to flash a radio (if you need to).....
It will tell you which radio you need in the thread for the rom your going to use....
You just have to read through all the rom threads to find out which one is going to be best for you...... I'd reccomend energy roms... I think they might only be available in english though. Different languages available will be listed in the rom thread...
The flash only takes 10 minutes...its the reading up first thats the time consuming part....
Hope it all goes well for you
thanks for the advice, I will follow it and read everything 10 times before flashing anything

blimey, you can come again! hehe
So here are the steps that I'm about to take: (first off I saved all my data, sms, etc elsewhere).
1) flash HSPL 3

thread HSPL3 said:
Seems all ROMs based on 1.42, 1.66, 1.XX can work with 2.08 SPL without problems.*

My ROM is 1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD, so it seems that this is okay to do. I think I have the 'usualleo', can I check this somewhere?
When I look into RAM SIZE, it says 512 MB, and I don't know what telstra is, but I definitly won't need the last one (1024). I also think in HSPL itself, I need to choose 2.08.HSPL.
Next, I'm about to flash my first custom rom, and will follow the steps given here:
Flashing Via ActiveSync
1. Download your prefered Rom from the LEO Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your computer
2. REMOVE SIM and microSD CARDS!! (this is a precautionary measure and is not compulsory)
3. Turn phone back on and wait until it syncs with your PC
4a. If your Rom is a .exe (customRUU.exe is already included in the Rom file) then run the file
4b. If your Rom is a .nbh file then run the CustomRUU.exe from the Roms Folder (if one isnt included then download it *HERE*)
5. Follow onscreen instructions to set up your New Rom
6. Once phone has gone through the customisation procedure then replace Sim and microSD Cards
7. Perform a Hard Reset to clear any leftover data from your previous Rom (see intructions at bottom).
8. Set up phone as required and job done.

I really can't find what ROM I should use..
I want a rom with landscape built in and the sms client 2016.
Are there much roms which include this?
yea thats all OK, except you dont really need to remove sim and sd. Only if you're stroubleshooting.
Plus, most cooked roms support 'autoinstall', , , create a folder on your sd card called autoinstall, put in there any cabs that are essentials, and the rom will install them as part of the post flash setup process.
as to which rom for what, thats gotta be down to you. Theyre all good, theres no such thing as a best rom, and what works brilliantly for one person makes the next person weep with frustration.
Flashing only takes 5/10 mins, you can try out a dozen roms in an evening.
Dont forget you only need apply hspl once. It will stay there till you either flash a stock from sd card (dont do this, theres no need nowadays) or you can run hspl2 (yes, hspl2) and choose your stock spl (1.42.0000 or 1.66.0000 or whatever)
can I run HSPL 2 after I firstly installed HSPL 3 for the custom rom I'm about to choose? And I'm guessing roms come packed (7z/zip/rar), need to unpack those files I guess? How do you actually start cooking a rom?
edit: I also gonna remove everything (hard reset) before I start flashing anything, so I start clean
Okay this is coming really close now:

Download Artemis 23.0 level A NLD (this I'm about to use)
I'm gonna go with artemis, but I also want a higher radio version. should I update my radio or my rom first? And how do I know which radio is compactible with that rom? the ones adviced in the rom? http://www.pilotlogic.com/artemis/htc_hd2_radio/ these?
I'm a bit confused what steps to take, in which order.
I know I have to HSPL first, (gonna use HSPL 3)
but then I doubt which to do first, rom or radio. And is it easy to install? Can I make any mistakes on this? what are the things that need special attention? thanks in advance guys, for all the help!
doesn't matter which order, except if you do rom first your phone will hang till you enter bootloader and flash a matching radio so most people say radio first.
heres how i'd do it
1 hspl3 (only needs doing once, not every time you flash)
2 enter bootloader manually
3 flash the radio
4 when it gets to 100% and is about to reboot, hold down voldown to go back into bootloader
5 flash the rom
6 allow phone to boot properly

update, just installed HSPL going slowly to the next step
damn guys? I'm really DOUBTING, should I flash a rom or a radio first?
I'm scared if I flash my rom first my cell won't startup because of incompactibility with my phone's rom? Or reversed ways. Can anyone advise me before I start?
Edit: took a leap of faith and trusted on the posts above, and I'm now running a new radio now only my rom and I'm done. Gonna see the video's and tuts first. I'll keep you updated. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW this radio is GREAT! my sound quality has improved like A LOT! very strange, with my original rom, I always heard noises, now it's way clearer when I call
