I thought about getting the upcoming HTC SHIFT
but as it was not phone call capable I decided not to.
now it appears YOU CAN make phone calls as well
via a bluetooth headset like I do with my ameo.
with a 800x600 screen. vista support and hsdpa
I think I may have to Crack and get one.
im a data freak and rarely make calls so I think I will find it hard to resist if it does make calls.
It's a dual device... it's basically a combination of a PDA and a PC.
the PDA part runs Windows Mobile and obviously has a phone interface which is essentially a reproduction of the new PDAs HTC have released like the Kaiser.
There's also a PC part which runs Vista... although HTC won't be releasing rom updates for this part since quite obviously... it'd take ****ing ages to download and probably butcher HTC's bandwidth.
currently, the only reason the device isn't out already is because HTC's marketing department haven't got round to pulling their fingers out yet.

Where did you get this info from?
I've been following discussions on the Shift very closely, and so far no one has been able to confirm that it can make voice calls.
Also, it does not run Windows Mobile as we know it, it runs 'Snapvue', which is a very cut down version of Windows Mobile, which has no phone interface - it just deals with email, SMS, calendar and contacts, without having to boot into Vista. It also (apparently) cannot use Bluetooth or Wifi from the Snapvue interface, only 3g. BT and Wifi are only available in Vista.
It looks like this device will not be living up to the hype it has generated.... without the voice calls, and with seemingly very poor battery life when using vista, I may be cancelling my pre-order.
its due out on Nov 19th UK approx 800 squids
the early reviews said that it was not voice capable
see the gottabemobile video review.
but now it apears they have done the smart thing and activated it.
as a much more internet/pc orientated chap rather than talk on a mobile . I am very very tempted by this.
how much would I get for a tmobile ameo on pk3
rom v good condition

And get rid of the Ameo? Nah... No way I can justify having all these expensive toys, but I couldn't get rid of the Ameo!
Incidentally, Orange will be offering the Shift on a data contract in the UK from early December.

I really hope he's not wrong, as it would make the device much more usable.
However, when a random stranger on an online forum, even if it is Olipro, tells me something but can't or won't back up their statement with some evidence, and every other source of information tells me that he is wrong, then I have to assume that he is, indeed, wrong.
WELL the sad news is that the SUPPORT people at HTC told me it is NOT voice capable so i guess thats pretty much from the Horses mouth
MMM getting ready for new device??!!??
im sure it will be hacked if not possible from the outset and some companies are offering them at discount rates with a mobile contract (non official) so my 3rd contract is up for renewal so may have 2 get one, with or with out voice support.... but with will mean a nice tmobile ameo going up for sale on ebay or here totally unlocked with pk 3.0 there will no doubt be a glut of these on the market and value will plummet..........
Knowing HTC, the Shift probably is BT voice call capable hardware wise, but is disabled via software from making calls!
feast your eyes on that you whiney *****.
or perhaps you'd like to accuse me of forging it?
okay this document also states intgernal gps? is this true as well?? hopefully that would be sweeterthan what has being announced maybe they included t but no support like on past phones hiding gps and fm radio....
it wasnt my intention to start a war here chaps , BUT the tech support at HTC told me voice calls are NOT available
only via skype. Personally that seems like a ludicrous decision as you still need 2 devices and the SHIFT will be just like other HSDPA capable laptops that are readily available.
To be honestI am considering geting a nice laptop and maybe getting a smaller HSDPA phone to use as a phone and a modem.
I hooked up my Ameo to our work laptop yesterday to try out the modem capabilities and i must say i was hugely impressed with how fast it was.
I would really like to have the full pc online experience and phone ability in one package but looks like this isnt the case

now... how does that PDF grab you?
So it mentions that i supports bluetooth headset (or it is an "option"), and that's nice. Will make it easier to use with Live Messenger or Skype.
But where does it say that the Shift can make phone calls?
I'm not trying to pick a fight, just trying to figure this out.

I mean that in more than one way. First, the benefit of having a PDA is that you are more efficient. The PDA helps organize your life so that one is more productive.
I have been thinking about this, but I am actually LESS productive using my PDA. I have found that I spend too much time reading threads, learning how to write SDconfigs, flashing, etc.
However, I am hoping that with the release of the new radio, we might be do a little less flashing these days. Either way, I know that we are a niche market. Iphone users would gasp when they see how much time we spend tweaking our phones.
In conclusion, I guess it IS the ability to do whatever I want to my phone that makes me choose a pocket pc. I am just ranting because I realize how much time a lot of us spend tweaking our phones. I think we all have a little obsession.
*I thought about this post b/c my friend with an IPhone said, "what the hell do you keep on doing to your phone" when he saw me flash my phone a couple of times.
Exactly, I spent several hours trying to save a few minutes in the flashing process, in the end I'm just glad I know "how to" do the stuff.
He would be flashing like crazy too if cool stuff starting coming out for the iPhone frequently, which it doesn't.

Word, but come June, game is on for them. They will get push email service from microsoft's exchange servers....and whatever other programs come out from the SDK
lol. i have been thinking the same thing. i spend 3/4 of my day at work read, writing, hacking, flashing, ect. i was thinking of getting a blackberry just so i could get back to work. i'm afraid i am going to loose my job. lol.
This is all by choice, of course.
I would bet that 75%+ of all Titan users out there dont even know XDA Developers or PPCGeeks exist... much less have any iota that their phones are upgradeable with new ROM's, etc.
The average dumbphone phone user doesnt even know that manufacturers occassionally update the firmware of their phones from time to time (they probably dont even know what firmware is).
Smartphone users are generally a bit more technologically savvy, but even then, the percentage of us who tinker with our phones is by far in the minority.
Good point rajuabju. My name is Mike, and I'm a flashaholic.
Yeah it is pretty sad when you start asking your friends to flash their phones because they are running stock roms.

HOLY Fawk. I did that for one of my friends. He was running 2.09, so I was like what are you doing? Granted, I flashed him 2.17, but that rom is stable enough for him. I didn't want to hassle with flashing a custom rom for him, in case he went to sprint or what not.

ABSOLUTELY.
This girl I know was going on and on and on about how totally awesome her Sprint Mogul was.
I pulled out my XV6800.
(a) She liked my cool blue color
(b) She doesnt understand how to load programs like Google Maps. I showed her and she was in shock.
(c) She thinks Rev 0 is just as good as Rev A because "its not like I watch porn like you do"
(d) She didnt know what Office Mobile was
I just had to walk away and shake my head.
But did you get her number in case you need to come by later and help her with firmware upgrades.
Yeah man yeah man......YEAH!!!!! I spend way too much time tweaking my phone. I remember I had one week where I changed roms 4 times!!! the first 2 times I reinstalled all my apps and setup my exchange server. I am much more organized with my PDA. But in many ways I am less productive...maybe less RE-Productive if you ask my wife!!1
Wow these stories are all to familiar. I get it from my wife constantly.
I'm actually a TMO/VZW/SN dealer. I've gotten 1 person to ditch their TMO Wing (and break their contract) and sign up for VZW, sold 2 XV6800's and a Mogul, all on the premise of being able to use the gps + rev A on the Titan.

I think Shifts are unlocked at least the ones that are offered on eBay, afaik. But in order to use the WinMo side fully, you have to liberate it, HardSPL and install one of the ROMs available on this forum to enable GPS. HTC crippled WinMo and locked a lot of functionalities such as GPS, SD card access, Phone, Blue Tooth, and WiFi. Currently we are able to get GPS functioning. We are still working on microphone, video, phone, BT, WiFi and SD.
Thanks

i have one for sale, unlocked

where u located ?
im in canada (toronto)
looking for $1200 usd

Negri Electronics carries them and can ship them anywhere! I've bought numerous devices from them!
Negri - $785!
Just picked up mine here:
http://www.negrielectronics.com/product_info.php?products_id=2159
Free shipping!
Where are you located? I'd like to sell mine. It's been used less than half-dozen times. It's fully unlocked and liberated, but I can put it back to original factory default. I'd sell it for US$1000 if you pay for shipping. I am in Brazil, but I can arrange for a friend who lives in the US to take it up with her so so that you pay only for domestic shipping (if you are in the US, that is!)
Probably you need to look at the market place. There is someone selling it.
Why are you selling your Shift?
Are you not happy with it? I have an AT&T Tilt and it is WAY too small for my eyes and hands. I want a phone that is at least twice this size. Looks like the Shift is ideal for me. I'm trying to scrape up enough $$$ to buy one. But when I saw two folks on this thread wanting to sell theirs it worries me a little...
I wouldnt worry about it. Different people have different needs.
I love the shift and even with the failings (no bluetooth or wifi on windows mobile side, etc) it's a great unit.
But it's not really a phone. If you are looking to replace the tilt you might be better looking at an Advantage. Double the screen size, a powerhouse and also a pretty good phone. The advantage would be a double size increase from the tilt IMHO and the shift a four times increase.

Yes. I completely agree with you. I use my shift most of the time on vista side to take notes and read ebooks and listen to audio books. If I could increase the RAM to 2GB I would like to opt out from Dell 620, which I use for .NET and BizTalk development. Once I am done with Vista, I switch to WinMo to get the emails from various email providers, again as soon as I go into a meeting I switch to Vista. That way I found a job for both Samsung Omnia (phone) and Shift personal communicator. I use my advantage as a GPS, personal communicator (IM, email, SMS). I use my Advantage as personal computing power house. I recently retired HTC Hermes and Tilt before switching to Omnia and Shift. Then I found I might need another system which is not small like phone and not big like shift for majority of communication deals. So, I found HTC Advantage as the solution. I got Omnia as handy camera and camcorder (5MP camera and decent camcorder 640x480 with 30fps) and the latest ROM update from Samsung fixed a lot of issues, but still I find having a keyboard would be easier to do a lot of IM and SMS. . Once I got this Shift, I temporarily retired Sony PRS 500. Eventhough it is cool on eyes while you are reading for more than couple of hours, I feel like carrying a lot of gadgets while flying is painful, taking them out and putting them back into the bags is pretty awful especially if you are running out of time.

You can count me in for any help with ROM testing - my upgrade is due in 4 weeks and counting...
Well whenever this comes to ATT I'll compile another thread devoted to tweaking and removing all of the random crap that is bound to come with the ATT version...
Upgrade or no upgrade available on my contract, I'm getting this phone (but I can wait for a non-front camera version for about $200 less than the $904 price it's at right now.)
I'm certainly ready to jump on the Raphael bandwagon, but the details for the 3G radio for us yankees are still questionable. Until I see what the US version is, I'm not getting really excited about it. Other than a RAM/ROM/Processor upgrade, there isn't much of a gain. Also, until this thing gets in the hands of some XDA users, we won't know if they made a similar mistake as they did with the Kaiser in terms of drivers and hardware implementation.
HTC Omni with Android - yes. Another rehash of the Wizard, meh.

Pretty sure that TouchFlo 3D needs D3D acceleration to work?? The GFX drivers situation should be almost identical to the diamond, so best to take a gander at the diamond forum and see if any issues are apparent?
You're absolutely correct.
But let us not forget that HTC's devices from years ago perform better graphically then the Kaiser. Who'd have ever thought THAT would happen (especially considering the vast technological improvements)?!?!
I have been lurking on the Diamond forums keeping an eye on how things play out. We still haven't seen a US-based Diamond variant yet.

Yes McHale but even if that is the case the Touch Pro is running the same chipset as the Diamond (7201A) so people could just make hybrid ROMs incorporating the best of both devices. Next question.
I'm not talking about the video specifically, I'm talking about support and proper implementation of hardware. Believe me, I'm not bashing HTC. I have enough devices I can say I supported them quite a little. I'm saying we haven't seen a US model yet and until I see the model that will work in the states, we don't know how well it will be implemented.

I've done the same mate, the Raphael should arrive just before we fly off to Florida (hopefully) gives me plenty of time to work on some Roms whilst away (and a new toy to play with on the plane)
Stocks for pre-orders are running a bit low on most UK sites now though, so be quick if you do want one. Expansys did me one for £460 with case and cables TV Out etc. I imagine prices will rise slightly after release and demand will be pretty high. The Uni finally gets chance to have a rest in the Bottom-Drawer Beasty PDA vault.

umm... if im not mistaken werent we all expecting the intl version to get froyo first anyways? and seeing as its october 1 I'd say giving the carriers a month to load the crap out of our versions is about right. And if you don't mind me asking, what exactly do want from 2.2? I'm pretty sure the JIT compiler and flash are the only things we're looking for considering our cpu/gpu combo makes it a perfectly decent phone as it stands.

Flash, JIT, improved gmail, chrome to phone, voice actions, handsfree bluetooth (not a fan of nuance), etc, not to mention that koush won't work on a cm port until froyo (although it appears wes is working on the vibrant, so who knows). None of them are huge glaring issues, but when you come from a a froyo phone to eclair it's the little things that you miss.
hopefully they can get a hold of a leaked version and start building roms around it so we dont have to wait the extra weeks or months it takes carriers to test and then send it out

This is exactly my hope. Seeing info posted in spain, I would wonder if that would be the first market to release, and why. Stateside I know the carriers don't like to give ota dates usually until they start rolling out. When Froyo originally hit the first few N1s there was a flashable zip available within hours. As for the benefits, there's a **** ton, including the fact that most of or development will start there.

Don't forget proper MS Exchange support built in - I know several business people who won't make the jump from iPhone to Android until they can do things like manage Outlook Calendaring appointments from their phone.

+1 here. Won't work on my Ford Sync either. Have you upgraded to Sync 2.1? Takes a dealer install
Android does have "proper" Exchange management available by way of Touchdown. While I admit it's not free, it's not terribly expensive either and is FAR more functional than even the iPhone is. At least, as compared to iOS 3.x. I have not seen the enhancements in iOS 4, so I can't comment directly on that, but I'm willing to bet it's still more powerful. That's what's so great about Android though. If what's built in is unsatisfactory, you can find an alternative. Try finding an alternative mail app for the iPhone.
That said, Google really does need to get on the ball and improve their ActiveSync features. It is so rudimentary right now, it's unusable if you're a power user. I almost wish they would buy Touchdown and integrate it into Android.

I think so. My dealer just checked the entire system for an error I was getting. Leave it to MS to have a memory leak. Cured the whole problem by removing batter cable and replacing. In PC parlance - a hard reboot!!!
I am able to use the Fascinate with the Sync - just cannot do that and download phonebook and use messaging.
What a pity for a pretty nice phone.

Yes you're right about Touchdown, problem is that a lot of people won't invest the time necessary to find apps, especially if they're coming from the iPhone universe where there usually isn't an alternative... it's either in the built-in client or it isn't supported. Sadly, people evaluate (and will strongly criticize) the phone based on how it works straight out the box.

Sadly, you are correct, in that value is often judged in out of the box performance. That's why I said that Google needs to seriously overhaul their Exchange integration. I really hope they do cut a deal with Nitrodesk so they can integrate Touchdown into Android, like they're doing with BlindType.

I'm thinking of getting a GT and have done some research here and other sites. The more I read the more worried I'm becoming whether buying a GT is really a good idea.
My main concerns are the screen issues, newton rings, moisture under the screen, oil slicks, shaky or flickering screen, device not turning on or charging properly, etc.
As with all forums, it's always the problems that get highlighted so I'm finding it difficult to gauge how wide spread these problems are, i.e. do they only affect 1% of the GTs or is it more like 30%? Do Samsung acknowledge there is a screen problem?
I'd like some candid advice from owners whether they are completely happy with their GT and whether they would buy one again if they were buying now?
If it makes any difference I'd be buying the 16GB WiFi only model from the UK.
I am very happy with my wifi galaxy tab10.1. In my opinion this is the best tablet currently available in market.
And I would advice any of my friends to buy this only at this moment.
Regarding newton rings : its acknowledged by Samsung UK and is present in the FAQ system of their website

I really like my tab, and haven't really had any problems. However, I did get some moisture under the screen after I left it laying outside on a hot day, but I just stuck it in the freezer and it went away .
Now, the decision of whether to get a GT... The main downfall is no external sd card (although this may not bother you). It's very thin, light, and looks good (+), but doesn't have the ports (like hdmi or usb) that other HC tabs have now (-). And, it's a bit more expensive than say a transformer, so you should take that into account too. My best advice would be to go somewhere like bestbuy and test them all out, then buy one on Amazon (generally cheaper).
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not too bothered about the lack of external connections as the tab will mainly be used for some web browsing and the odd e-mail. I do however want to root it.
I did also consider the Transformer but the newer serial numbers haven't been successfully rooted yet. TBH, if it was rooted I would probably go for the transformer as it's ~€100 cheaper than the GT and already has the HC3.2 upgrade.
I've had a play with both and liked both. I preferred the GT's physical aspects (size and weight) and am familiar with TW as I have a GS2 so it's my first choice.
My main issues are the screen problems. Would you say the problem exists in all GTs (i.e. design flaw) but only manifests themselves when exposed to higher temperatures or is it something that is affecting only a batch of devices (i.e. manufacturing flaw)? I know that's probably difficult to answer but I'd like to hear opinions none the less.

Thanks for the link. Well judging from that poll the problem seems to affect more than 50% of those that voted. It's not completely clear whether the problem has been fully resolved either. I've asked on that thread for people with screen replacements to say if the new screens have resolved the problem.
I would say i'm a basic user of my tab...i haven't rooted it as no idea how to go about doing that.
Overall for what I wanted it for, it's exceeded my expectations. I haven't encountered any issues with newton rings (touch wood) not lagging.
I have the 32gb wifi only version and I would suggest this is the optimum size. I feel the 16gb would be way too small.
Download dice player or another as this will play most files thrown at it. Also pay for the HDMI and USB adaptor to be able to watch on your TV or to transfer files. I've found this the easiest way to get files onto the tab rather than messing with Kies (don't go there) or using wifi explore options.
I wanted a tab for on the go, watching movies that i've downloaded without the need to convert (as with ipad). For this reason, it's a great tab, light and widescreen! Nice widgets and can customise the home screen. I'm sure I could get more use out of it, but I've come from apple products so new to android.
With the release of the TF2 coming nov 9th I'd definitely wait for that. If the Tegra 3 can run 1080p smoothly I'm making the switch over.
i have the 16gb metallic grey for 3 weeks now. I live in canada, i work as a real estate broker and am using the tab a lot, especially outside.
Here is fall season, temperatures are getting colder. I didnt have any problems with my screen. I really like my tab.
At first, i wanted to wait for TF2, but since they never said the exact date it would be release and that i was waiting since august, i bought the Galaxy 10.1 and i have nothing bad to say.
The only thing (as stated by others) the lack of sd/usb/hdmi slot turn me down a bit but u can fix that easy with thoses 2 : http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Galaxy...GY7Y/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1320212663&sr=8-7

I'd wait if I was you. The GT10 is not perfect. Sometimes they have defects (gasp!). And then when you call customer service--they don't even speak the same language and they ask you questions! Can you imagine being asked questions! It's terrible! It's like they're saying "I hate your stupid face." when they ask you to "press the power button and tell me what happens." And performance? Well, it's good, but as soon as something new comes out it will totally suck. Like "wow, how did I ever use that" sucking. It will be abysmally bad! Everyone will laugh at you.
At some point, they will make a perfect piece of technology, then you won't need to ask because it will be perfect. Also, I think you should wait to breathe until the air is perfect. Hold your breath and I will tell you when it's time to breathe.

Oh wow that's very helpful and original.
I don't have 500 bucks to throw at a device that may have a design flaw nor the time to chase around getting it repaired because of persistent problems and so was trying to gauge the reliability of the device and extent of any problems.
You obviously have too much time if you can write all that dribble. If you don't like the topic don't read it.

Dude, there will always be something better coming out, if he wait for that "perfect" product, well he will never buy something.
I didnt want to spoil my money either. Here in canada, with a 3yr sim card data plan, i got a discount and my tab cost me 350$.
Before taking my decision, I've looked at almost all review on the web, went to stores and played with all the tabs.
At the end, it will be a personnal decision. Think about ur needs, no product is perfect, it might defect, thats why u get a warranty when u buy it. For me that was another reason not to buy online, just in case i need service on the tab.
Now for the reliability, since we live in differents parts of the world, i guess nobody can give you a 100% advice about it.
For my two cents, I love my Tab, think it is definitely with getting the 32 GB version, and was unlucky enough to have a problem with the charging connecter breaking. I bought it on Craigslist like-new, but didn't have a receipt. I called Samsung in the middle of the night (24 hour support), and was able to get everything taken care of. It took five minutes, at 1 am Pacific time, speaking to someone with an American accent. They sent me a return label, so I didn't pay a penny to get it repaired, even without proof of purchase. Got it back today, two weeks later. Impressive.
I've got to say, I work with a fair amount of tech support for my job as an audio engineer, and am always amazed with how much better support I get from dealing with companies like Allen & Heath through my work, because we have pro accounts with them all. Samsung was nearly on par with them. That's saying something if you ask me.

Bought the 3G 16 GB version and love it.
The USB adaptor was included free in the box.
This beauty is the next best thing after my wife and kid
16 GB is more than enough, as USB works fine, and if you need extra space there is always the GoFlex Satellite with 500 GB. I think buying 32 GB does not make any sense.
Got also the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android 3.0+ and together with the tab it's a killer combo
So if you are really interested in getting a tab, I would go all out for it
Ok, kinda stupid question, but here it goes:
I have played around with the black version of 10.1 16GB 3g version and the back plastic has a somewhat "rubbery feel". What I want to know is whether the white one has the same feeling or it is glossy and "shiny"... Well Iam ordering tomorrow and want to know please! Thanks!
I was going to make my own thread regarding the GT10.1 before buying one, but thought I would just post it in here:
My question is currently from what I know with stock you have to use Kies to transfer data/backup. With a custom ROM does still happen or can I just use it as a mass storage like all android phones?
I planned on getting a 32gb, but don't know if that is the smart choice. With all kinds of cloud and online storage is 32gb even needed? I know it has no expansion on the device itself.
Lastly, one of my reasons for getting a tablet is for reading all my ebooks and especially PDFs, how well do these look on the 10.1?

Since the source hasn't been released, the roms aren't exactly custom but modified stock ones. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So they work with kies.

So, basically all the owners of a Galaxy Tab have to go the route of Kies to do any kind of data transfer(From PC). Fun.

Well, if indeed I am correct, yes. BUT you can also use dropbox or sent an email to the account that is linked to the tab containing the data. And there is always the option of buying the USB adaptor... Ok I admit that as far as connectivity is concerned, Samsung behaves like Apple but imo what sucks about Apple is not the hardware but the software.
Off topic:
Lets hope that Samsung delivers ICS as well, thus giving us Apple like support!
