I'm thinking of getting a GT and have done some research here and other sites. The more I read the more worried I'm becoming whether buying a GT is really a good idea.
My main concerns are the screen issues, newton rings, moisture under the screen, oil slicks, shaky or flickering screen, device not turning on or charging properly, etc.
As with all forums, it's always the problems that get highlighted so I'm finding it difficult to gauge how wide spread these problems are, i.e. do they only affect 1% of the GTs or is it more like 30%? Do Samsung acknowledge there is a screen problem?
I'd like some candid advice from owners whether they are completely happy with their GT and whether they would buy one again if they were buying now?
If it makes any difference I'd be buying the 16GB WiFi only model from the UK.
I am very happy with my wifi galaxy tab10.1. In my opinion this is the best tablet currently available in market.
And I would advice any of my friends to buy this only at this moment.
Regarding newton rings : its acknowledged by Samsung UK and is present in the FAQ system of their website

I really like my tab, and haven't really had any problems. However, I did get some moisture under the screen after I left it laying outside on a hot day, but I just stuck it in the freezer and it went away .
Now, the decision of whether to get a GT... The main downfall is no external sd card (although this may not bother you). It's very thin, light, and looks good (+), but doesn't have the ports (like hdmi or usb) that other HC tabs have now (-). And, it's a bit more expensive than say a transformer, so you should take that into account too. My best advice would be to go somewhere like bestbuy and test them all out, then buy one on Amazon (generally cheaper).
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not too bothered about the lack of external connections as the tab will mainly be used for some web browsing and the odd e-mail. I do however want to root it.
I did also consider the Transformer but the newer serial numbers haven't been successfully rooted yet. TBH, if it was rooted I would probably go for the transformer as it's ~€100 cheaper than the GT and already has the HC3.2 upgrade.
I've had a play with both and liked both. I preferred the GT's physical aspects (size and weight) and am familiar with TW as I have a GS2 so it's my first choice.
My main issues are the screen problems. Would you say the problem exists in all GTs (i.e. design flaw) but only manifests themselves when exposed to higher temperatures or is it something that is affecting only a batch of devices (i.e. manufacturing flaw)? I know that's probably difficult to answer but I'd like to hear opinions none the less.

Thanks for the link. Well judging from that poll the problem seems to affect more than 50% of those that voted. It's not completely clear whether the problem has been fully resolved either. I've asked on that thread for people with screen replacements to say if the new screens have resolved the problem.
I would say i'm a basic user of my tab...i haven't rooted it as no idea how to go about doing that.
Overall for what I wanted it for, it's exceeded my expectations. I haven't encountered any issues with newton rings (touch wood) not lagging.
I have the 32gb wifi only version and I would suggest this is the optimum size. I feel the 16gb would be way too small.
Download dice player or another as this will play most files thrown at it. Also pay for the HDMI and USB adaptor to be able to watch on your TV or to transfer files. I've found this the easiest way to get files onto the tab rather than messing with Kies (don't go there) or using wifi explore options.
I wanted a tab for on the go, watching movies that i've downloaded without the need to convert (as with ipad). For this reason, it's a great tab, light and widescreen! Nice widgets and can customise the home screen. I'm sure I could get more use out of it, but I've come from apple products so new to android.
With the release of the TF2 coming nov 9th I'd definitely wait for that. If the Tegra 3 can run 1080p smoothly I'm making the switch over.
i have the 16gb metallic grey for 3 weeks now. I live in canada, i work as a real estate broker and am using the tab a lot, especially outside.
Here is fall season, temperatures are getting colder. I didnt have any problems with my screen. I really like my tab.
At first, i wanted to wait for TF2, but since they never said the exact date it would be release and that i was waiting since august, i bought the Galaxy 10.1 and i have nothing bad to say.
The only thing (as stated by others) the lack of sd/usb/hdmi slot turn me down a bit but u can fix that easy with thoses 2 : http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Galaxy...GY7Y/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1320212663&sr=8-7

I'd wait if I was you. The GT10 is not perfect. Sometimes they have defects (gasp!). And then when you call customer service--they don't even speak the same language and they ask you questions! Can you imagine being asked questions! It's terrible! It's like they're saying "I hate your stupid face." when they ask you to "press the power button and tell me what happens." And performance? Well, it's good, but as soon as something new comes out it will totally suck. Like "wow, how did I ever use that" sucking. It will be abysmally bad! Everyone will laugh at you.
At some point, they will make a perfect piece of technology, then you won't need to ask because it will be perfect. Also, I think you should wait to breathe until the air is perfect. Hold your breath and I will tell you when it's time to breathe.

Oh wow that's very helpful and original.
I don't have 500 bucks to throw at a device that may have a design flaw nor the time to chase around getting it repaired because of persistent problems and so was trying to gauge the reliability of the device and extent of any problems.
You obviously have too much time if you can write all that dribble. If you don't like the topic don't read it.

Dude, there will always be something better coming out, if he wait for that "perfect" product, well he will never buy something.
I didnt want to spoil my money either. Here in canada, with a 3yr sim card data plan, i got a discount and my tab cost me 350$.
Before taking my decision, I've looked at almost all review on the web, went to stores and played with all the tabs.
At the end, it will be a personnal decision. Think about ur needs, no product is perfect, it might defect, thats why u get a warranty when u buy it. For me that was another reason not to buy online, just in case i need service on the tab.
Now for the reliability, since we live in differents parts of the world, i guess nobody can give you a 100% advice about it.
For my two cents, I love my Tab, think it is definitely with getting the 32 GB version, and was unlucky enough to have a problem with the charging connecter breaking. I bought it on Craigslist like-new, but didn't have a receipt. I called Samsung in the middle of the night (24 hour support), and was able to get everything taken care of. It took five minutes, at 1 am Pacific time, speaking to someone with an American accent. They sent me a return label, so I didn't pay a penny to get it repaired, even without proof of purchase. Got it back today, two weeks later. Impressive.
I've got to say, I work with a fair amount of tech support for my job as an audio engineer, and am always amazed with how much better support I get from dealing with companies like Allen & Heath through my work, because we have pro accounts with them all. Samsung was nearly on par with them. That's saying something if you ask me.

Bought the 3G 16 GB version and love it.
The USB adaptor was included free in the box.
This beauty is the next best thing after my wife and kid
16 GB is more than enough, as USB works fine, and if you need extra space there is always the GoFlex Satellite with 500 GB. I think buying 32 GB does not make any sense.
Got also the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android 3.0+ and together with the tab it's a killer combo
So if you are really interested in getting a tab, I would go all out for it
Ok, kinda stupid question, but here it goes:
I have played around with the black version of 10.1 16GB 3g version and the back plastic has a somewhat "rubbery feel". What I want to know is whether the white one has the same feeling or it is glossy and "shiny"... Well Iam ordering tomorrow and want to know please! Thanks!
I was going to make my own thread regarding the GT10.1 before buying one, but thought I would just post it in here:
My question is currently from what I know with stock you have to use Kies to transfer data/backup. With a custom ROM does still happen or can I just use it as a mass storage like all android phones?
I planned on getting a 32gb, but don't know if that is the smart choice. With all kinds of cloud and online storage is 32gb even needed? I know it has no expansion on the device itself.
Lastly, one of my reasons for getting a tablet is for reading all my ebooks and especially PDFs, how well do these look on the 10.1?

Since the source hasn't been released, the roms aren't exactly custom but modified stock ones. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So they work with kies.

So, basically all the owners of a Galaxy Tab have to go the route of Kies to do any kind of data transfer(From PC). Fun.

Well, if indeed I am correct, yes. BUT you can also use dropbox or sent an email to the account that is linked to the tab containing the data. And there is always the option of buying the USB adaptor... Ok I admit that as far as connectivity is concerned, Samsung behaves like Apple but imo what sucks about Apple is not the hardware but the software.
Off topic:
Lets hope that Samsung delivers ICS as well, thus giving us Apple like support!

He appears to get a lot of e-hate but the issue he's talkin about concerns me. I don't have a retailer's refund policy to fall back on since I bought it brand new and sealed on craigslist so I have Samsung's warranty. If this is a prominent problem, I want to just go with the Xoom and get rid of the Tablet 10.1.
Anyone know anything about this? Is this common?
I tried to do a search and only found 2 threads on sleep and wake issues but I really didn't know what keywords to type for this phenomenon. Is it "bricking issue"? lol
Personally, I will never EVER buy another Samsung product again. I got burned too many times on their products, and their after sales support is a frigging joke. Or at least in my country it is. First was my dual sim phone of theirs that was so buggy that I opted to stick to one sim instead (here in the Philippines, it's a whole lot more economical to have two Sims at least because each carrier has an unlimited call and text plan to the same network). Then my Samsung external HDD drive died in less than 6 months that I purchased it, taking all of my photos with it (I do professional photography on the side), and now my LCD TV went kaput. In all cases, their service center didn't do squat. On the phone, they kept saying that they cannot do anything about it other than recommend that I buy the higher model. On the second, they don't recover data, and I have to go to their main office to get a replacement. That's a problem for me because I have a day job and their main office is far from where I work. But the LCD took the cake for me. They just told me this morning that my LCD model is already phased out and that they cannot repair it. I bought the LCD in 2007. Imagine how often they release LCD models, and thus how often they phase out products.
That's 3 different products from Samsung. I doubt that they'll have a different approach on smartphones and tablets. Sell your Galaxy tab. There are a whole lot more better tablets out there.

Hm, that sucks to hear. How long is your LCD warranty? If you bought it in 2007, it's been 4 years. They refused to fix it despite it being under warranty still?
I'm reading about these issues and I don't really know how big of a problem it is or how widespread. It's been the Galaxy Tab or the Xoom at this point.

Just relax, is not the cure for cancer that you bought... is a freaking tablet. If it breaks, you replace it under warranty. Wasn't better to live in those times with no Internet and possible broken tablets?

That's probably it. I had a small issue with my tablet, I could not register it online... so the lady did it for me over the phone. That is because they were missing my batch model on their list, apparently it was too new. Next day, I had someone calling me back to make sure I was satisfied. Definitely not your scenario... and frankly, you are dealing with electronics. They BREAK. Is not your mom's old fridge that is running for over 40 years flawless, those times are long gone. You cannot rely on an external disk to backup important photos the same way you cannot expect to have a TV under warranty after 4 years... If you want a TV that works for 20 years, go get one of those cathodic tubes and they will last 20 yers, while they give your eyes cancer, heh.
Obviously, no disrespect intended to you. I made it a little more ironic so you see the depth.

Is that supposed to make me BETTER?? Seriously though, you're right. No need to obsess. I just don't want it to happen to my tablet cause that would suck.
Well, if it happens while in warranty, is fine. I don't know about you, but myself... when I get a new gadget I carry it like it is made of gold. You should see me rubbing my tablet screen every few hours with a microfiber cloth, heh. After a while, I really don't care anymore... and in fact, if it breaks there is a valid reason for me to buy newer technology.
I just don't think is worth to spend the time and chase every little imaginary issue, instead of enjoying your new gadget.
I have had none of the problems described in that video. The only wakeup problems I've had were my own doing (kernel hacking...)
Similarly, I have never had any problems with Newton rings on my device.
To the guy whining because he had a Samsung hard drive fail:
1) You are clearly not truly a professional photographer if you had irreplacable files on a single hard drive without backups. I'm not even professional (high-grade amateur) and I keep my important stuff backed up to multiple locations. Professionals keep backups AND they RAID their primary storage device, end of story. (Note: RAID alone is not sufficient, while it protects against hard drive failures it doesn't protect you against malware or filesystem corruption due to the computer itself going bonkers.)
2) There is no guaranteed fail-safe hard drive manufacturer - they ALL have a chance of failing. The only time I've seen a manufacturer put out a truly defective series of hard drives in terms of mechanical reliability was the IBM Deathstar series. Key point to remember: Prior to the Deathstar, IBM's drives were regarded as the most reliable drives money could buy.
Edit: I have owned HTC devices in the past, and currently own a Samsung smartphone (Infuse 4G) and one tablet (Tab 10.1) - The Samsung displays are clearly superior, and build quality of the Infuse is on par with the Tilt2 it replaced and higher than the HTC Tilt that the Tilt2 replaced.
Ya, same here Entropy... no issues what so ever, I own a perfect tablet.
And I totally agree with you when you say the Samsung hardware has a very high quality level.
Both my Galaxy Tab and S2 are great devices, in every aspect.

This thread was pointless... until your post. At least I laughed. Thank you.
Finally got my prime after so much stress and work. Was so EXICTED.
First off the bat, I noticed it was kinda sluggish. Maybe I expected too much oh of it but when switching to portrait mode from landscape, it could take up to 3 seconds and shudder (unlike my iPad 2).
The browser was SO slow oh my god. Went side by side with my iPad 2 and the iPad 2 destroyed the prime. Often times the prime would just give up half way through loading the page and I had to click refresh.
What's up with the keyboard? I've been typing on tablets for so long and am really fast. Often times when I typed something, the prime didn't recognize me clicking space and words were mashed together. Almost never have had this problem before and it was common on the prime.
The native books app is TERRIBLE. I had this 500 page PDF I wanted to read and got it on my prime. The books app would freeze up and take up to 10 seconds sometimes to load the next page! Thankfully I went to the android market and found a third party one.
Overall, even with ICS, it doesn't feel as snappy or responsisive as iOS (and trust me, I HATE giving apple credit). I can't see myself actually achieving a task on this, like typing something up or looking up something with the slow browser. It didn't have smooth enough transitions and I hated to see it shudder.
So yes I am SO upset. I don't even want to recap the trouble and time input to finally getting one of these. Either you suck Asus, my unit is messed up(doubtful), or I have been spoiled with iOS and android is second rate. Thank you

that is odd - are you using a live wallpaper? if so that can happen sometimes. Also can you tell if its happening with specific apps or the entire tablet? that happens to me every time I use the Best Buy app and a few others - its the apps fault. But it could be your tablet. There is also a setting to look for that you can tell the tablet to auto detect orientation or to force ti one way ot the other - double check what that is set at

The stock browser sucks. get Opera Mobile. It is free. The stock browser is better with ICS now. I ditched the stock browser after 2 days and this is my 4th android device in less than 4 years and I've never switched browsers until now. This appears to be common but easily reolved by using another browser (no different than using Chrome in stead of IE on your PC for example

The default keyboard is Swype I believe. Check out it's swype feature, it's pretty cool. You trace works instead poke out letters. LOTS of keyboards to choose from. I recommend SwiftKey x for Tablets

I kinda like the default reader, but I have a nook so I have a library there and therefore prefer to use that app. This tablet also come preloaded with the Kindle app. All of those eReader apps are free. and they all work slightly different. Find one you like and then stick with that one. Check out free book samples while you are testing them.
- also have you rebooted after you installed ICS? I mean a nice long and slow shut down, walk away, come back later, turn it on, walk away, don't touch it, and then let it load back up....no touching for 15 minutes? t=That s no science but just a recommendation from past experience flashing roms and OSs etc.

something is not right for it to be THAT bad. I wouldn't expect a brand new, less than one month old release of a new tablet and only one day into a brand new OS to prefer anywhere close to iOS. Ever. If Apple is due credit where they are due - for $800+ someone can walk away with a beautiful tablet that is nearly flawless It sounds like something is slowing your way down, really bogging it. Have you tried killing the tasks (there is a widget fot that now, and rebooting? You could try that before you do the longer walk away reboot. You could also get OS Monitor and see what is hoggin on your CPU.
So yes I am SO upset. I don't even want to recap the trouble and time input to finally getting one of these. Either you suck Asus, my unit is messed up(doubtful), or I have been spoiled with iOS and android is second rate. Thank you
Noting you mentioned is related to hardware so it is not Asus. If you've never used Android then you probably =bly aren't familiar with the variety of settings you can change and ways you can tweak things to help youself trouble shoot some of these problems. I hear you there buddy about the PIa of getting one of these to begin with!! took me over 3 hours on the phone just to get my ordered changed even though I had an email with exact instructions on how to do it. Apparently they didn't tell the CSRs how to do it.Did you get yours from Best Buy? If so, yo are probably still within your 30 days return period. You could return out and wait for a new arrival exchange unit to come in.

Personally it ALL sounds HW related to me...
OP....If the tablet was up to the task you would be getting better performance.
Yes, there seems to be some happy people out there but as it's been PROVEN that there are MAJOR problems with the TFP.. I'd be more than likely to say it's because these people have a high threshold for putting up with garbage, rather than them experiencing less problems than everyone else.
If you dislike spending good money afte bad on HW that [email protected] WORK PROPERLY then yeah.. go ahead, buy it.. but if you like value for money.. kick it to the kerb.

I have read up on this constantly for the past 2 months... TBH, this tablet is a piece of ****.

Do you have one? No? Then you should probably stfu...lol. It is a great tablet and has really good hardware. The only known HW issue that I am aware of is GPS. The Prime is a great piece of technology and I am no fanboy. It has issues but nothing like what you mention or what the OP mentions, IMO. If the OP is having that type of trouble they describe then I recommend returning it because that is not the experience i have had at all.
The stock browser, btw, is better than Opera Mobile on ICS. It was crap on HC though.
android sucks lesson learned
I thought your OP seemed a little trollish. Now we know you are a big A fanboy that came to enlighten the Android faithful about the second coming of Jobs. Thanks. We weren't aware that Android was completely inferior to iOS. Now that we know I am sure we will all sell our devices and get in line at the closest Apple store.
Really though for what it's worth, I think Apple is great for a lot of people. I would recommend it to my wife now that Sprint has the iPhone even. It will probably be her next phone. She will probably have an iPad at some point even. So, I'm not sure why there has to be such a divide.
That said, I really can't imagine what would possess someone to create an account on XDA and pretend that their Prime is worse than their iPad 2 just to put out the idea that Android is ass. BTW, most of us have so much experience with this OS that even if it was complete ass we would be so used to the smell that it wouldn't bother us to be all nose deep up in it. Luckily that isn't the case. I know you want it to be. You really wish it was. But..
Android is a great platform with a ton of great developers. Now that Jobs is dead, Apple is likely destined to go back to where it was just before he rejoined their ranks. It's going to take a lot longer now because of all of the iOS worship though.
Anyway, I hope you find a buyer for your Prime if you ever had one. Thanks for letting us know that all of this Android development and enthusiasm is for not. I can't believe I wasted this much time on it...whew. Thanks again. You are awesome. You look really cool with those white headphones too. Sick. I love it. Later el f*cko.
I crack a little smile every time I read such glorious, intelligent, well thought-out posts!
I would say return it for sure. No reason to stick with it and be disappointed.
Have people lost their ability to criticize products without sounding like they just came out of the womb (not talking to you OP, but some of the other thread commentators in this thread)?
Unfortunately I've had the exact same experience as the OP with the Prime I bought to replace my Ipad2. I'm severely disappointed in the performance, especially the stock browser. I know people say to download a browser from the market, but do they really expect all customers to do that? That is their solution?

Looks like there are apple fanboys in our forum again desperate to find something to gloat about. they are like hawks and troll this forum to tarnish this product as much as possible. They are scared that Apple may finally lose its marketshare now that there are MUCH better options. Don't be fooled by them!:
I find it sad that anyone that questions this tablet is immediately branded an apple fanboy.

I'm not on the apple fanboy-branding bandwagon either; I've used iPads, iPhones, and own an iMac. My better half has an iPhone, and it just plain works - period. The iPhone just works, while I sit around tinkering with aftermarket android apps, changing themes, flashing ROMs which might or might not work. So you won't see me criticizing love for Apple. It's fair to compare the two. But there's a mature and constructive way to criticize.
The second response to this post had the phrase "TBH, this tablet is a piece of ****." Wow, what a revelation! Could we scrape the bottom of the barrel anymore when it comes to intelligent observations about the tablet? The OP says it's possible his unit is messed up, but he says 'doubtful'. The title of his thread includes "or does this tablet suck." We are on a TFP forum. Come on. My tablet runs well. I have extensive experience with iPads and other tablets. The TFP runs beautifully for me; and now with ICS, the stock browser is fine. So YES, your tablet is probably messed up in some way or another. Or I just got some lucky batch that performs above and beyond yours.
I understand that others are not having the same experience and are frustrated, but I would take advantage of their retailers return policy and return/replace the tablet. I've already had to replace mine. I'm debating seriously about returning it in order to get one of the newly announced CES tablets. But you won't see me typing half-assed, dumbed-down posts that are clearly written to stir up the pot.
My personal experience
I've had my Tranformer Prime maybe close to 8 months.
Now it's running JB 4.1.1 Stock ROM which was updated OTA.
I do find this tablet rather sluggish. Switching from one app to another takes a few seconds.
Moving from one page to another when viewing PDF files is a chore! I do personally feel it's hardware issues. Not so sure whether it'll be solved by rooting and changing ROMS but I do find myself using my Note2 more often than my tablet just because the latter is super fast!

I was also having problems with mine after the ota and called customer support to find out about doing a factory reset, whereupon they said they were aware of problems and that it needed to be returned and flashed by them. It was picked up on Monday and is in repair now.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm confused. So there IS a problem with the OTA update to JB? Why send it back? Can they ie ASUS do something about it?
Can't you do the factory reset yourself?

They said some people are having a problem and that me doing a factory reset would not sort it but they could, hence them asking me to return it for them to reset. If you explain that your problems have occurred since the ota I would hope that they would recall it and at the very least test it after their service.
I hope this helps, I will post again after I receive it back, which hopefully will be a couple of days after easter.

I hard reset mine several times and for me it didn't make a difference but no harm in trying.
Back using my HP TouchPad which is smooth but much heavier and without the same aspect ratio for video or HDMI out and of course the advantages of the dock. So I am looking forward to getting it back.
Now this useless tablet has decided out of thin air that as soon as I turn of the screen it disconnects from the wifi....

Samsung tablets suck in general.
Poor assembly.
Sony rules.
If nothing else because of the IR remote control.

Samsung tabs outsell sony tab by what, 100 to 1? lol. Sony rules? Google "sony tabler S wifi problem"... Have fun with that.
@BeamMeUpStreaky and all the others
- you can solve the "wifi/screen off/disconnect" problem installing ADVANCED WIFI LOCK app.... I use the free version and works like a charm

Thank you, but the problem is the faulty tablet. Android provides for a fulltime wifi connection and the tablet did perform as such for a few days... until the tablet could no longer perform the simple task of keeping the connection going with the screen off. My sister galaxy tab has never once faild to be connected to wifi when she turns on the screen, regardless of how long she had the screen off. All she did was select "never" as i did in wifi settings

Funny but PS3 does not have the IR connector, BT-only.
Like I said, good luck w/Samsung and sorry for the inconvinience.
Tablet S does have faults. Mostly because there is no root so far and the external SD cannot be used the way regular Android tablets use it.
Other than that, it is a very good tablet price/performance/features taken into consideration.
Frankly, I do not understand why do you keep posting here.
You're right lol.. obvious waste of my time as Im not a conformist Bushbot. Ciao
Funny how everyone keeps defending it and carrying on like you're a twat cause you don't go out of your way to find work-arounds for a staple feature. If someone bought a car and the seat belts didn't work properly, would you become irritated and tell them to stop complaining, and that they should just install some 3rd party parts themselves?

Hey Dan ;-)
the tablet could catch on fire in the night from a faulty power supply and they would blame me for not being an electrcien/fireman.
Kinda like how Elizabeth Hasselbeck still sticks up for george W, they stick up for their tablet. I find that so odd because I love my bmw but when people tell bad experiences they may have had with one, I dont go bushbot on them.
Seriously guys we really need to stop with these pointless arguments. If you like Sony then good for you and if you like Samsung then that's absolutely fine. Everyone has their own opinion and you can't go around preaching how your way is the only way. I get it I just purchased the Sony Tablet S about 3 weeks ago and I love the design of it (Sony's design is seriously above and beyond) but it does have its downfalls. I have learned to deal with them through third party apps but I don't expect everyone to want to do what I did to get the tablet to do what a normal Android tablet should do right out of the box. I love this tablet even with its flaws and I know a good amount of the people in this forum do too but don't expect Streaky to feel the same way. Then again, Streaky, you should have expected these types of reactions since you are in the Sony tablet forums. I mean try going to the Rolex forums and telling them about some flaws on their watches and you'll raise hell Anyways I hope we get root soon so I can see about customizing my Tablet S. Streaky, I hope you're happy with the Galaxy Tab just make sure you don't need a tablet with a microsd slot. I might be getting one for my gf for Valentine's Day

Im sure your gf will be realky happy with you Everything you said makes sense to me. Im off to bed.
I wonder whether u have a faulty unit. My 16gb used.to do this. WiFi always on was selected, yet when tablet screen was off, I never used to get my emails (not until screen was put on again). I exchanged and opted for a unit out of the 32gb batch in hope that problem would not be present. It was gone! Now, when screen is off and WiFi always on is.selected, I get the blinding green LED light indicating to me when emails have arrived. Try exchange maybe.
You mention the Samsung tab as replacement. I'm not sure whether u mean the old one or the new tab plus. I can comment on the new tab plus (as an ex-owner). In my honest opinion (since this thread seems to be just about stating opinion ), you'll likely find that in comparison, the IR function on Samsung tab plus is inferior. It offers only limited functions, it is difficult to angle correctly and cannot learn new commands like Sony S. If u have a VCR, sadly you will not be able to control it with the Sammy tab. Mini apps looks great ( Pop up apps), but it cannot be customized; you have to stick with what Samsung think you might use most - e.g the world clock app (??!). On Sony and HTC, you can customize for apps you use most to be on homescreen
Also, there will be accidental pressing of power button frequently, overheating, screen of deaths. Look at the most populated threads on Sammy tab 7 Plus forum. I had 3 tablets, Sony S, Sammy 7 Plus and HTC Flyer. I sold on the Sammy 7 plus and kept the other two. Don't get me wrong, I have respect for Samsung and their products - very proud owner of SGS2. However, the tablet experience was a let down. IMO, I think that part of the major delay with Sammy 7.7 getting on shelves (apart from avoiding Apple Lawsuits), is to engineer a model that customers will be happier with.

As I have clearly said, I couldnt care less about ir. I have zero plans to be pointing a 7-10 inch device at my tv or anything else. Unless you have used the new samsung 7.7 amoled, you cant speak from experience.
If samsung is holding back on it to as you say make something that customers wouldbe happy with, perhaps sony should have done the same and backed off until they had a real sdcard slot and a wifi that didnt create what my friend at dell canada calls a 44% return rate....
There is a reason that I dont know a single person with a single sony device. Samsung has pounded them into the ground on tv, cell phones and music players. Its easy to find the numbers (google).
im glad that you didnt mind having to try twice to get a sony tab that could perform like the other tabs, I frankly like things to do what they are supposed to do the first time the last time and all the times in between. Not a fan of exchange it until you get on that works. That on encourages inferior companies like sony to push out junk.
I know I will be very pleased looking at my 64gb super amoled screened tab with an amazing ppi, 170 viewing angle. The best part is, samsung tabs dont need to go to thegarage 10 times aweek to get the wifi to work. My sister has had a 10, and she nows has the7... never a single issue with either.
Again, just so that im clear: I would never and will never care about ir on a tablet. Its not what a tablet is for. Its just. Poorly implemented gimmick.
I ordered my TF201 32GB from Office Depot and received it in early January. Unboxed it, turned it on, installed some apps etc. then left charging overnight. Next morning noticed unit was not charged and down to 25% or so. Used another outlet but no improvement. Then froze the power unit as suggested in the forum. Called Asus Technical Support and troubleshooted the unit. CSR convinced it was the unit itself; asked me to ship unit to Texas facility (at my dime of course). 2 weeks later unit was shipped back (took 9 days since it was Fedex Ground from CA to NY!).
Unboxed unit and noticed that battery at 5%! Plugged in and... Nothing. Not charging!! Called ASUS - probably same idiot with whom I spoke the first time. Asked me to ship it back (on my dime) again to Texas but different RMA! Had no explanation as to why the RMA number should be different but I guess whoever they outsourced repairs to does not want to report to ASUS that they did not fix an issue the first time..CSR told me to only ship unit AGAIN. I challenged him that it may makse sense because, god forbid, it may be charger at fault! He said "ok" ship it back too.. thank you very kind of you to keep an open mind MR. ASUS CSR... I also mentioned that it seems unfair I pay for shipping again... so he sent me a Fedex label.. ground of course so 3-4 days to Texas (no ground pick up on weekends) and then another few days for the geniuses at whoever does the repair to figure it out and another 5-6 days to ship back.. so all in all 6 weeks since purchase and I have not used my Prime.. I had bought my wife an ASUS UX21 since she travels a lot for work but I returned it to Amazon for a refund within the 30 day window.. had to pay a fee to return but hey probably saved her (and me) a lot of aggravation.. her Toshiba ultrabook is working just fine thank you very much. Totally frustrated by idiots at ASUS. I cancelled the dock purchase at Office Depot too. As much as I do not like Apple products at least you can find an Apple Store everywhere and get a replacement and/or a technician to take a look and troubleshoot.. and iPads cost the same as a PRIME.. I am done with Asus.. once this is fixed it goes on Craigslist or eBay. Not sure what else I'll get.. anyone want to order my ASUS? It will be cheap.. once I get it back.
This reminds me of an experience we had with an Asus RMA, it was one of their eeePC models (back when they were the hot thing to get). We had to send the device back a total of three or four times before the issue was finally properly repaired. Asus can be kinda poor when it comes to some more obscure RMA situations, I totally understand your frustration.

Sounds completely understandable on your stance. Unacceptable customer service. Damn Asus, is the RMA place really that bad. Not all are bad experiences but there's been too many bad stories popping up lately. Good luck on choosing new device. As much as i like my Prime, if I had to go through what some people have, I'd give up on them also.
@OP
Why didn't you take it back to Office Depot in the first place? That's why retailers exist, to deal with the customer.
My 14-day return window is up today. I'm bringing back the TFP.

Yes...you heard it right. I previously had the Galaxy Tab and was fairly happy with it's performance (sans ICS). Really wanted to try the TFP...so I returned the GT and got one to try myself even with all of the negativity expressed here. While I encountered no real issues myself...I couldn't help think about whether or not the TFP would become but a blip on the radar for ASUS support and dev efforts. Sure, the TFP is newer technology than the GT....perhaps I'm just not willing to be one of their beta testers. The GT has been out long enough now to iron out a lot of the wrinkles...plus, ICS is still to come which will almost certainly improve performance.
I'm not slamming the TFP...just wasn't impressed enough with it over the GT to risk being subjected to Asus' tech support should that have been required.

Well.. I love my current Prime and I'm waiting on my second to get here next week along with my dock!
Newegg won't even accept my return because the serial number sticker next to the charging port is gone....
They don't care to turn it on and check the serial in settings to match it with the box and warranty papers.
Looks like a lot of us have had bad experiences because of this tablet. I'm waiting for the TF700T but I might be going with another company.

THIS^^^is a follower. Worried too much about what others are thinkn instead of making decisions based on hour own thinking. PLUS the comment about not sure about further Asus support or developement is ignorant at the least. ASUS has been constantly pumping out updates. Name one other company who released as many OTA updates as the Prime received. WE had ICS. We had root already out the box basically. We Had overclock in less than a month. We had Ubuntu n Linux n other flavors lf it already n less than a month. We already have extra drivers n such being added by dev. In less than a month. We already have root for ICS. We already have some minor theming going on. All this without even having bootunlocker tool yet. For you to make such a statement is kinda disrespect to hard work developers have been doing already here. Name another tablet as new as this one thst had so many things developement wise in its first month of existence. You forgetting its still barely over a month since people first started receiving their primes.
I COULD CARE less you returned it, that's your right to. But your reasoning is plain silly. You said although my prime runs perfect, I got frustrated at seeing all the negative stuff surrounding it. DO you know how many of us had our devices way before you n been dealing with all negative stuff? My prime works great also but not gonna return just because someone else dislikes theirs. Sounds like someone needs their hand held when choosing tablet or making any major decisions. GOOD THING THE other poster didn't mention horror stories he heard about the Galaxy tab or you might just throw a hissy fit.
DONT mean to sound harsh but JUST saying....it would be different if you were like OK I'm returning it because it performed poorly for me. Or I had a personal bad experience with Asus support. Not, well ima return it because Tom,****,n Jane dont like theirs...lmfao
Well good luck with new device anyways.
I had a wonderful experience with them. with a new working Prime delivered before I sent mine back.
But then again, I didnt demand a fix or talk like a privileged anus.

Thanks...a follower? At least you didn't call me a fanboy. ;-)
I care about my investment and how I feel about it. It's all speculation right now as to how much develpment will occur for the tfp at this point...guess I'm just bowing out as I don't wish to be part of the guessing. I do know the Galaxy Tab has been rewarded.
As far as me not experiencing any earth-crushing issues, I'd say that's true. However, I'm sitting here inside my home typing away on my GalaxyTab with a lock on 8 satellites. And wifi range is excellent EVERYWHERE in my home (and I am talking about a significant difference)...I now get my expected 22-24Mbps down from anywhere in my house whereas before would only achieve these speeds right beside my router and would get 4-6Mbps down further away. Still useable...but pale in comparison to the speeds I get with the GT.
I tested both the TFP and the GT within a month period....I feel better with the sammy and went back to it. How is that being a follower? I tried both extensibly for myself to arrive at a decision I felt comfortable with. As far as the negativity being a factor in my decision...hell yeah. Why shouldn't it be? Had I not been offered the chance to return the TFP easily, I never would have bought it based on what I've read here...some would say that's part of the research done when considering a purchase. After testing it out, I wasn't blown away...for my needs, there was nothing that the GT couldn't do just as well plus with gps and wifi working much better. For sure, it only has 2 cores...maybe I'm good with that.
I do hope everyone feels good about their purchase. I didn't and did the logical thing.

Easy as you are right. That is what i said n still feel the same. I ran by serial number by Gary n he told me it was from an early batch n someone would call me. Ill easily take the new hardware revision over older one. Especially if it might mean might GPS might finally work. I never said "I want them to repair mines". Plus although no dropped signals or anything, wifi signal still fluctuates alot. SO if older hardware was never really meant to be shipped out then people on older batch entitled to the upgrade, or sorts. I did pay for this device, Cash, and I do have a warranty. I never had an issue like others been posting. SO ILL TAKE THE MINI UPGRADE IF OFFERED. That's all. Plus from hearing the horror stories from returns like guy with device smashed, I'm not sure if I would even send mines in yet. Especially since overall having no problems. GPS aside. Remember, they are people out there that have GPS working to some extent one way or another. I having seen a lock yet, although I never tried for more than 5 mins n was indoors everytime. I haven't taken my prime outdoors yet. Plus based on my date of final purchase 12/22 I'd be entitled to any possible hardware fixes for GPS since mine is clearly shown to be purchased before they took GPS spec down.

Heck...looks like you'd opt for a fully functional tablet, too. Guess you're just braver than I to wait around for Asus to fix it for you...although, it appears you may be somewhat skeptical of their customer service yourself? ;-)

Actually iPad's are $120 more.
received it in early January. so all in all 6 weeks since purchase and I have not used my Prime..
My question is how you figure 6 weeks? How many weeks are there in January if today is the 28th?
On a serious note, why not try to find a charger from Frys or OD or Staples. The ones for the OG TF 101 work and determine if the problem is the charger or not?

OK, completely understandable then. I see where you really coming from from this post.
As far as your second quote,I'm not really waiting for anything. I was just told my device is one of early one built. Device still works great but if I'm offered an opportunity to upgrade it to newer parts, then why wouldn't I. Lol. It'll make it even better, I would hope. I still love this device and has done everything I've asked of it n more. Only complaint I would have is GPS. I know that's very important to some people and deciding factor whether to keep it or not. For me, its no big deal. Everything is great aside from GPS. Just thankful I don't have issues some others been describing. Kinda makes it hard to believe when your device working so well. But its a given.
One thing though, Asus better step their game up with the quickness. I have a feeling if they don't address the possible issues on prime, their new upgrade model will be a fail LR do worse. As Prime n t-700 basically share all the same internal components. It'll be in Asus best interest to attack these issues head on. ASUS Losing people everyday. They gaining also but still. People with issues want to keep device but won't since some are riddled with issues. Can't be mad for someone wanting to return a device that's not working properly for them.
Well I just decied to replaced my iPad2 with the Asus Prime 2, mostly sold on the attachable keyboard..
But I've noticed a growing number of threads on this forum that suggest that people are desperate to get rid of their units and trade them up to the Prime TF701?
Is.. is it *really* that bad? Have I made a huge mistake buying one? I got it from a 3rd party seller on Amazon so Im unsure if I have the same recourse from a shop
It Seems to be in the Manner One calls "BAD"
I am on my second one. First one was bad out of the box. Replaced it & I have only experienced a few of the reported problems. Specifically:
1. All but inoperative GPS -- For what I wanted GPS for, the onboard unit would not have worked adequately any way -- External Bluetooth unit fixed that.
2. Weak WiFi. My biggest complaint. Works, but range is somewhat less than I desire.
3. Somewhat slow data transfer between computer & Transformer -- Liveable, but slower than I desire.
4. Prior to JellyBean, I experienced a "few" spontaneous program shutdowns. I never got ANRs, just restarts of very few apps. None since JB.
I read most of the replies on this forum, and my experience has been overall positive (not OUTSTANDING) with the TF201 when compared to the descriptions (horror stories) of some other users.
If I had to do it over, and knowing what I now know, (I really hate to say this) I would buy an IPad. STOP!! No rock throwing, please. There is only ONE reason I would commit such an act (I LIKE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT APPLE OR ITS PRODUCTS). The only possible reason I would do so, is because of the FOREFLIGHT app (for aviation). There is nothing Android that measures up to it.
Well, there you have it. If your expectations are unrealistically high, you possibly will not be satisfied. If you are willing to overlook some few deficiencies, your experience can be positive.
Hope my ramblings give you some glimmer of hope.

That sounds pretty bad in fairness...
Given the price of the unit (£400) you would expect it to be fast and.. wifi/gps to work!
Hrmm.. This is problematic. I've not yet actually revived the unit yet so I've got to consider carefully if its worth opening or just sending back closed for a full refund (if I can..)
I will absolutely NOt be trading my Prime for the 700..I will be trading it for the Nexus 10!
Same here...
Mine is going back to amazon for a full refund. Printed the return label and refund barcode late last night. droping the box by ups today.
Ahhh and yes... I'm getting a Nexus 10 too :victory:

I don't think you made a mistake. In addition to the attachable keyboard, you've got the much longer battery life, a USB and a full-sized SD slot. On the Prime itself, you have micro HDMI and Micro-SD. You've got some apps that will run in floating, re-sizable windows (Overskreen browser and Stick-IT media player). You can install widgets. You can mount the entire filesystem when connecting to a PC without installing some silly program. You've got multiple sources for getting apps and less expensively than the fruit-flavored alternative. On top of all this, the Prime has a more robust processor than the iPad2.
No, you didn't make a mistake.
There are a small number of specific apps where the iPad is clearly the better choice. These tend to be nichey.
You're going to love your Prime. Mine's great.
Hey op, since you've had a ipad 2 before and know how it performs, I think you'll know very soon if you have made a mistake or not.

you sound like a troll with this question. However since I made the leap from Ipad 2 to tf201 I will say you need balls of steel to buy a transformer prime. If you cant tell by looking at the *****ing going on here, there are problems that Ipad users will not appreciate. If you want a project to occupy you time and mind get a prime. if you dont know what fastboot means steer clear.

I assure you that's not my intention at all. Personally Im quite a fan of the Android OS (Most of my phones have been android, and Im rocking a Galaxy Note with PA right now and its fantastic)
As for things like Fastboot I've not really used it for quite a while (Since I had a Nexus 1, great phone But are you saying that most of the issues can be migrated with rooting/3rd party ROM's?
If that's the case then I'm comfortable enough going down that root but given that most of the *****ing here seems to be hardware related issues (I've read things about the Wifi/GPS don't work, apparently because of the casing..?) And things like slow I/O I'm somewhat confused about how re-flashed ROM (Although I've seen things that Jellybean also can make marked improvements in both stability and speed, but then you lose flash apparently?!)
There seems to be a lot of conflicting information floating about, and I appropriated that by the nature of forums that people are going to post to help with faults rather than "My phone is great!... Carry on!"..
Im just trying to build a balanced picture in my mind so if I should "take the risk"
Well it looks like my Tablet isn't going to arrive today so I guess I have the weekend to mull over it.
Still torn between if I should accept the device and run with it, or send it it back and hold out for the Nexus 10 (And with luck, get a keyboard/cover style solution to it)
Its just the lack of a SD card on it that's making me hesitate.

#1 what is a Prime 2? There is only one Transformer Prime....
#2 I think you should get an ipad, just for the fact you are folding under peer pressure.
I have had my Prime since Day #1, picked it up at a game stop with preorder, I was the 1st one in the store on release day. I have loved it since day one, yes it is not 100% (Gps is weak, got the dongle now) but no products are ever 100% what everyone wants. I did not buy it for the GPS, it was more of a feature than a need.
I love my TF201 w/keyboard and all the extras that apple users don't have. (sd, usb, etc...) I will not be trading or selling it off until it is time for a new one and at that time hope Asus or someone is still making it with a detachable keyboard.
Again, I think you should send it back so you can get your Ipad with the app you like. (good Luck) :fingers-crossed:
