This worries me... anyone have this problem? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was watching reviews and stuff on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on youtube and came across this video:

He appears to get a lot of e-hate but the issue he's talkin about concerns me. I don't have a retailer's refund policy to fall back on since I bought it brand new and sealed on craigslist so I have Samsung's warranty. If this is a prominent problem, I want to just go with the Xoom and get rid of the Tablet 10.1.
Anyone know anything about this? Is this common?
I tried to do a search and only found 2 threads on sleep and wake issues but I really didn't know what keywords to type for this phenomenon. Is it "bricking issue"? lol

Personally, I will never EVER buy another Samsung product again. I got burned too many times on their products, and their after sales support is a frigging joke. Or at least in my country it is. First was my dual sim phone of theirs that was so buggy that I opted to stick to one sim instead (here in the Philippines, it's a whole lot more economical to have two Sims at least because each carrier has an unlimited call and text plan to the same network). Then my Samsung external HDD drive died in less than 6 months that I purchased it, taking all of my photos with it (I do professional photography on the side), and now my LCD TV went kaput. In all cases, their service center didn't do squat. On the phone, they kept saying that they cannot do anything about it other than recommend that I buy the higher model. On the second, they don't recover data, and I have to go to their main office to get a replacement. That's a problem for me because I have a day job and their main office is far from where I work. But the LCD took the cake for me. They just told me this morning that my LCD model is already phased out and that they cannot repair it. I bought the LCD in 2007. Imagine how often they release LCD models, and thus how often they phase out products.
That's 3 different products from Samsung. I doubt that they'll have a different approach on smartphones and tablets. Sell your Galaxy tab. There are a whole lot more better tablets out there.

Hm, that sucks to hear. How long is your LCD warranty? If you bought it in 2007, it's been 4 years. They refused to fix it despite it being under warranty still?
I'm reading about these issues and I don't really know how big of a problem it is or how widespread. It's been the Galaxy Tab or the Xoom at this point.

Out of millions of tablets sold, I guess there has to be some that are defective... not to mention the user factor. Who's telling you that the MAJJJOOORR DESIGN FLAWW (lol) is not caused because the guy was taking a dump and he dropped the tablet in the toilet bowl. Or he simple played with the ROM, heh.
Just relax, is not the cure for cancer that you bought... is a freaking tablet. If it breaks, you replace it under warranty. Wasn't better to live in those times with no Internet and possible broken tablets?

That's probably it. I had a small issue with my tablet, I could not register it online... so the lady did it for me over the phone. That is because they were missing my batch model on their list, apparently it was too new. Next day, I had someone calling me back to make sure I was satisfied. Definitely not your scenario... and frankly, you are dealing with electronics. They BREAK. Is not your mom's old fridge that is running for over 40 years flawless, those times are long gone. You cannot rely on an external disk to backup important photos the same way you cannot expect to have a TV under warranty after 4 years... If you want a TV that works for 20 years, go get one of those cathodic tubes and they will last 20 yers, while they give your eyes cancer, heh.

Is that supposed to make me BETTER?? Seriously though, you're right. No need to obsess. I just don't want it to happen to my tablet cause that would suck.

Well, if it happens while in warranty, is fine. I don't know about you, but myself... when I get a new gadget I carry it like it is made of gold. You should see me rubbing my tablet screen every few hours with a microfiber cloth, heh. After a while, I really don't care anymore... and in fact, if it breaks there is a valid reason for me to buy newer technology.
I just don't think is worth to spend the time and chase every little imaginary issue, instead of enjoying your new gadget.

I have had none of the problems described in that video. The only wakeup problems I've had were my own doing (kernel hacking...)
Similarly, I have never had any problems with Newton rings on my device.
To the guy whining because he had a Samsung hard drive fail:
1) You are clearly not truly a professional photographer if you had irreplacable files on a single hard drive without backups. I'm not even professional (high-grade amateur) and I keep my important stuff backed up to multiple locations. Professionals keep backups AND they RAID their primary storage device, end of story. (Note: RAID alone is not sufficient, while it protects against hard drive failures it doesn't protect you against malware or filesystem corruption due to the computer itself going bonkers.)
2) There is no guaranteed fail-safe hard drive manufacturer - they ALL have a chance of failing. The only time I've seen a manufacturer put out a truly defective series of hard drives in terms of mechanical reliability was the IBM Deathstar series. Key point to remember: Prior to the Deathstar, IBM's drives were regarded as the most reliable drives money could buy.
Edit: I have owned HTC devices in the past, and currently own a Samsung smartphone (Infuse 4G) and one tablet (Tab 10.1) - The Samsung displays are clearly superior, and build quality of the Infuse is on par with the Tilt2 it replaced and higher than the HTC Tilt that the Tilt2 replaced.

And I totally agree with you when you say the Samsung hardware has a very high quality level.
Both my Galaxy Tab and S2 are great devices, in every aspect.

unusual viewing angle

I just bought the gtab from office depot and while I love it the viewing angle is really bad. If I flip it upside down (buttons on the left) the viewing angle is wayyyy better but then I can't watch videos because they are upside down.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Yes, it does. They charge you 15% restocking fee if the item is an open box.
Someone on here, who claimed to be working for depot, once suggested that you can exchange the item claiming it to be defective, then don't open the one you exchanged it for and go to another depot to return for a full refund. I've never tried this, but I guess it's an alternative if you have no problem with doing something like this.
Regardless, please read up on an expensive gadget like the gtab before you decide to buy it next time.
The gtab is really not for the faint of heart.

That said, the T&C seems contradicting, restocking fees implies refund, missing accessories implies open box, yet the statement before it clearly says "no refunds for open boxed items" but the first sentence enumerates the conditions for return/exchange which doesn't say "unopened box"

Yes, because there are no Android tablets that have great screens Return it and fork out an extra $100 for a Transformer, if you can find one (and you will be able to soon). Don't bother trying to sell the gTab -- it's rare to find something that loses so much of its value the moment you hit "Submit" on the order screen.

Seriously, when I purchased mine, I read every review under the son, and even the positive ones pointed out the less than spectacular viewing angles. I bought it anyway becuase I figured it was something I can live with, and it is.

I think we're making more drama than is really necessary here, it's not that bad, I happen to love mine. I did not want to spend 500 bucks+ for something I can't expand the memory on, or be able to customize like I want to. Is it for everybody? No, but I think it's pretty darn good. You can always try the Transformer I guess when it's back in stock, otherwise you're looking at spending several more Benjamin's.

Well, I think all the complainers are drama queens as well. But since they are drama queens, I feel it is my obligation to send them to apple and let apple take care of them.
I recommend apple product to most people who ask me about gadgets and computers for this very reason. The gtab is .3 lb heavier than the ipad, which most people can't even feel the difference. And yet, in the past few months ever since the gtab came out there's been a kazillion people crying bloody murder about the million ton weight of the gtab compared to the ipad.
I feel it is abundantly clear by now that the gtab has bad viewing angles. The only thing we can do when someone asks about how to fix the screen is to direct them to the ipad.
So, in short, I am making a big deal out of this because drama queens want to make a big deal out of it. Apple ipad really is the way to go.

Not for me, too expensive, too closed and non-expandable memory. I have 32 Gigs in my gTablet now, I would have had to pay $600 to get that from Apple, and I just don't have that kind of money. I'm sure it is better in some things, but for 300 dollars less I can live with the differences, and I am loving what I have, that's all that's important in the end.

But californiarailroader, the gtab is .3 lb heavier than the ipad, which equates to 30 pounds in drama queen language. You're not going to be able to live with a 30 pound difference are you?
Personally, I love my gtab. I've already incorporated it into my daily work and entertainment. I use it to read the news every morning when I ride on the train to the city. I read pdf documents with it. Check email. It basically does everything I intended it to do for me. That said, I don't recommend the gtab to anyone. Like I said, let apple deal with the whiners. I only want to help those who genuinely want to explore this neck of the woods.

I believe he's being sarcastic, yet realistic.
Basically his thinking (if I may) is that if somebody complains about the weight, tell them to get an iPad...if they complain about the screen, get an iPad. If they complain about lack of iApps, get an iPad.
I've used my stepfathers iPad, I complained about the lack of customization, lack of memory upgrade, lack of USB imput, and lack of "not being an Apple product." Therefore, I got a Gtablet.
essentially, if anyone gets a G-tablet, or ANY OTHER Android tablet and complains that it's not an iPad, then our only advice would have to be, GET AN iPAD!!!

He was complaining about the bad screen, not about Android. There are people who claim the screen is good, and some who say it's terrible, so I don't really blame him for taking a leap of faith to see for himself. He's found it unacceptable, so he should return it and get an Android tablet with a better screen, of which there a few out now, and several coming in the next few months.

Since the ipad was the first mainstream tablet to hit the market, it is inevitable for people to compare everything else to it. That said, whenever people want to compare the gtab to an ipad, I advice them to get an ipad. Again, if they want to complain about the .3 lb heavier weight, then I advice them to get the ipad. If they complain about the screen, which there should already be a billion reviews telling them about the screen by now, the I direct them to the ipad.
There was a review I read long ago in which the reviewer complained about the black space around the screen. Ironic how after he complained about the black space around the screen he went ahead and praise the ipad, nevermind that the ipad has an even larger black area around the screen.

Look, there's been a billion reviews online telling everyone about the bad viewing angles on the gtab. If after that he manages to complain about the bad viewing angles, then I can guarantee you that he will find something else to complain about no matter what tablet he gets. Just direct them to the ipad and let them be apple's problem.
Long ago, I used to work as a cop. You know what different departments do when they find a 10-96 (aka mental subject)? They find an excuse to drive them to the next town over and drop them off there. I was a cop at a Chicago area suburb and we had to deal with Chicago cops dropping their mental subjects in our town almost on a daily basis. While it was annoying, I have to admit that this was really the most efficient way for the Chicago cops to deal with their mental subjects.
What I am proposing is we use this same strategy in our case. We direct all the whiners to apple and let it be their problem. Problem solved.
I will accept all whiners into the fold if it means HC gets a bigger market share
I dropped the gtab because the screen gave me headaches yet I have a transformer on backorder right now. I also am recommending the iPad for most people so I have less wasted time explaining what "root" of the sdcard is so they can install cwm
Once I rooted and put the VEGAn GingerEdition on this bad boy, the screen has seem to have gotten "better". Maybe it's because I actually have market, I can watch flash videos without stutter, apps don't force close every time I try to run them, or any number of other problems I encountered on the stock software.
Honestly, I'm starting to get used to the screen. Plus, I might take a whirl at making a ROM or theming for the gtab

[Q] Thinking of buying a GT - Need candid assurance

I'm thinking of getting a GT and have done some research here and other sites. The more I read the more worried I'm becoming whether buying a GT is really a good idea.
My main concerns are the screen issues, newton rings, moisture under the screen, oil slicks, shaky or flickering screen, device not turning on or charging properly, etc.
As with all forums, it's always the problems that get highlighted so I'm finding it difficult to gauge how wide spread these problems are, i.e. do they only affect 1% of the GTs or is it more like 30%? Do Samsung acknowledge there is a screen problem?
I'd like some candid advice from owners whether they are completely happy with their GT and whether they would buy one again if they were buying now?
If it makes any difference I'd be buying the 16GB WiFi only model from the UK.
I am very happy with my wifi galaxy tab10.1. In my opinion this is the best tablet currently available in market.
And I would advice any of my friends to buy this only at this moment.
Regarding newton rings : its acknowledged by Samsung UK and is present in the FAQ system of their website

I really like my tab, and haven't really had any problems. However, I did get some moisture under the screen after I left it laying outside on a hot day, but I just stuck it in the freezer and it went away .
Now, the decision of whether to get a GT... The main downfall is no external sd card (although this may not bother you). It's very thin, light, and looks good (+), but doesn't have the ports (like hdmi or usb) that other HC tabs have now (-). And, it's a bit more expensive than say a transformer, so you should take that into account too. My best advice would be to go somewhere like bestbuy and test them all out, then buy one on Amazon (generally cheaper).

I did also consider the Transformer but the newer serial numbers haven't been successfully rooted yet. TBH, if it was rooted I would probably go for the transformer as it's ~€100 cheaper than the GT and already has the HC3.2 upgrade.
I've had a play with both and liked both. I preferred the GT's physical aspects (size and weight) and am familiar with TW as I have a GS2 so it's my first choice.

Thanks for the link. Well judging from that poll the problem seems to affect more than 50% of those that voted. It's not completely clear whether the problem has been fully resolved either. I've asked on that thread for people with screen replacements to say if the new screens have resolved the problem.
I would say i'm a basic user of my tab...i haven't rooted it as no idea how to go about doing that.
Overall for what I wanted it for, it's exceeded my expectations. I haven't encountered any issues with newton rings (touch wood) not lagging.
I have the 32gb wifi only version and I would suggest this is the optimum size. I feel the 16gb would be way too small.
Download dice player or another as this will play most files thrown at it. Also pay for the HDMI and USB adaptor to be able to watch on your TV or to transfer files. I've found this the easiest way to get files onto the tab rather than messing with Kies (don't go there) or using wifi explore options.
I wanted a tab for on the go, watching movies that i've downloaded without the need to convert (as with ipad). For this reason, it's a great tab, light and widescreen! Nice widgets and can customise the home screen. I'm sure I could get more use out of it, but I've come from apple products so new to android.
With the release of the TF2 coming nov 9th I'd definitely wait for that. If the Tegra 3 can run 1080p smoothly I'm making the switch over.
i have the 16gb metallic grey for 3 weeks now. I live in canada, i work as a real estate broker and am using the tab a lot, especially outside.
Here is fall season, temperatures are getting colder. I didnt have any problems with my screen. I really like my tab.
At first, i wanted to wait for TF2, but since they never said the exact date it would be release and that i was waiting since august, i bought the Galaxy 10.1 and i have nothing bad to say.

I'd wait if I was you. The GT10 is not perfect. Sometimes they have defects (gasp!). And then when you call customer service--they don't even speak the same language and they ask you questions! Can you imagine being asked questions! It's terrible! It's like they're saying "I hate your stupid face." when they ask you to "press the power button and tell me what happens." And performance? Oh wow that's very helpful and original.
I don't have 500 bucks to throw at a device that may have a design flaw nor the time to chase around getting it repaired because of persistent problems and so was trying to gauge the reliability of the device and extent of any problems.

Dude, there will always be something better coming out, if he wait for that "perfect" product, well he will never buy something.
I didnt want to spoil my money either. Here in canada, with a 3yr sim card data plan, i got a discount and my tab cost me 350$.
Before taking my decision, I've looked at almost all review on the web, went to stores and played with all the tabs.
At the end, it will be a personnal decision. Think about ur needs, no product is perfect, it might defect, thats why u get a warranty when u buy it. For me that was another reason not to buy online, just in case i need service on the tab.
Now for the reliability, since we live in differents parts of the world, i guess nobody can give you a 100% advice about it.
For my two cents, I love my Tab, think it is definitely with getting the 32 GB version, and was unlucky enough to have a problem with the charging connecter breaking. I bought it on Craigslist like-new, but didn't have a receipt. I called Samsung in the middle of the night (24 hour support), and was able to get everything taken care of. It took five minutes, at 1 am Pacific time, speaking to someone with an American accent. They sent me a return label, so I didn't pay a penny to get it repaired, even without proof of purchase. Got it back today, two weeks later. Impressive.
I've got to say, I work with a fair amount of tech support for my job as an audio engineer, and am always amazed with how much better support I get from dealing with companies like Allen & Heath through my work, because we have pro accounts with them all. Samsung was nearly on par with them. That's saying something if you ask me.

Bought the 3G 16 GB version and love it.
The USB adaptor was included free in the box.
This beauty is the next best thing after my wife and kid
16 GB is more than enough, as USB works fine, and if you need extra space there is always the GoFlex Satellite with 500 GB. I think buying 32 GB does not make any sense.
Got also the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android 3.0+ and together with the tab it's a killer combo

I have played around with the black version of 10.1 16GB 3g version and the back plastic has a somewhat "rubbery feel". What I want to know is whether the white one has the same feeling or it is glossy and "shiny"... Well Iam ordering tomorrow and want to know please! Thanks!

I planned on getting a 32gb, but don't know if that is the smart choice. With all kinds of cloud and online storage is 32gb even needed? I know it has no expansion on the device itself.
Lastly, one of my reasons for getting a tablet is for reading all my ebooks and especially PDFs, how well do these look on the 10.1?

Since the source hasn't been released, the roms aren't exactly custom but modified stock ones. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So they work with kies.

Well, if indeed I am correct, yes. BUT you can also use dropbox or sent an email to the account that is linked to the tab containing the data. And there is always the option of buying the USB adaptor... Ok I admit that as far as connectivity is concerned, Samsung behaves like Apple but imo what sucks about Apple is not the hardware but the software.

Lets hope that Samsung delivers ICS as well, thus giving us Apple like support!

I am. Granted I have not just the GPS issue, but BT/WiFi fail as well. But you guys know that ASUS released this device knowing full well that the GPS was not going to work and I can't imagine they didn't catch the BT issue prior to release too. The only way they missed the BT issue is if the BT issue is caused by whatever quick fix they used to solve the initial BT issues reported by a reviewer(s).
By acquiescing, you are telling ASUS and every other manufacturer that this behavior is okay. That when faced with a choice of scrapping a device in the manufacturing stage for a significant loss, or releasing it to the public and letting the cards fall where they may for less of a loss, that they should screw the consumer. Depending on the extent of the issues with the TF201, they would have had to replace the backs of all TF201s at the least, perhaps more. If everyone, or enough people return the device then you are sending a message that this is unacceptable. We Androids know that we aren't getting perfect Apple devices, but we don't accept such blatant insults. I am also going to be reporting this issue to the Better Business Bureau and I think you should as well. Their response to the GPS issue is nothing short of a case of bait and switch.

Without internal documents I can't truly prove that they intentionally sold a flawed TF201 with the intent to recover costs incurred before the problem was identified. But one of two things happened.
1. They caught the issue and upon determining it to be unfixable they released the device anyway to recoup whatever costs they could.
2. They are so stupid, which is possible because they released and ALL-ALUMINUM back in the first place, that their testing methods failed to catch the fact the GPS was so **** that even standing in the middle of a road with no obstructions it can take FOREVER to find your location. Until the fix to download GPS coordinates over WiFi, in a week of delivering pizzas the tablet never managed to figure out that Las Vegas wasn't Toronto.
I favor the first possibility because as bad as GPS is for me, I can't see it being possible that they didn't catch it.
For now I am back to my TF101 which works flawlessly for my uses.
EDIT: Now I've gotten my valid raging out of the way. I admit that were I only victim to the GPS issue, I would probably keep the tablet. But I still urge those of you keeping your tablets to file a report with the Better Business Bureau over ASUS' handling of the GPS issue. They advertised a feature and now they simply act as if it never happened and have offered nothing as recompense.

You sir, are part of the problem. I don't care about GPS either. It's the principal of the matter and the precedent it sets. Your 500+ dollars is 500 reasons for ASUS and the next company that has a choice to release a knowingly broken device because people like you will just accept the lubed up rod they have for you.
I am giving ASUS a chance to send me a replacement unit. If they send me one and it doesn't have the BT/WiFi issue my faith will be restored and I will not report them to the BBB and any tech blog/news site that will listen to the story and read/post the correspondence between ASUS and myself. I like my TF101. I want ASUS to make this right
What exactly does this have to do with the future of Android? I can see your point (sort of), but this is a technology issue and has nothing to do with Android. Companies, regardless of their operating system, have done this sort of thing for years. I'm not saying that it's right, but it has nothing to do with the future of Android or any other operating system. Yes, Asus probably should have held this product a little longer for more tests, but they did release the first quad-core device running ICS to the world. It has a few minor defects, but those are to be expected for the first run of products like this. I say, if you're so upset, do the only thing that you can do as a consumer...don't purchase the product. That tells the company that YOU are not happy with it. Posting in a forum like this saying that we need to return a device because you're not happy with it is kind of pointless. Just take it back and get something else.

Yea in my rage I forgot to get to my central point. I refer to what these kind of events do to the future of Android. Imagine where the iPhone would be if the iPhone 3G had an identical issue. Imagine all those happy iPhone 2G users selling their iPhone, and going home with a shiny new iPhone 3G only to find out that the GPS didn't work and that they couldn't browse the internet if they were playing music to a set of BT headphones or to some BT setup routed through their home/car stereo. Then if Apple decided to say that it's a phone, not a personal navigation device. Then they announced a new phone 2 weeks later and just released the iPhone 3Gs with the problems solved.. 3 or 4 months later.
Apple would likely have not survived such a fiasco since Apple is built on the premise of things just working and of having a superior end to end service. I blame ASUS for this problem. But the masses, the ones who go to Best Buy and buy a random tablet, would return this and from then on they would think Android was a bad platform. They would likely never learn that it was just the particular device that is bad. These kinds of things can't be allowed to happen if Android is to remain a viable alternative. The issues with this tablet are not your regular first run issues. First run issues are usually few and minor. GPS is all but useless, and for me and many others bluetooth is also useless. Is ASUS going to throw up their hands in another few weeks and say that this is not a dedicated MP3 player and take bluetooth off the spec sheet? If ASUS doesn't find me a tablet with working bluetooth I will be returning it. The point is that if the rest of you just accept the GPS problem, and the BT problem if you have it just because you don't use those features you are going to have the problem with the next device and the next one, or similar ones.
Last. STOP CALLING THIS A FRIGGIN EARLY ADOPTER OR FIRST GEN DEVICE. This is the TF201. The 2 differentiates it from the TF101. This device brings changes to the TF101. It is not an entirely new device.

From where I'm sitting (Prime is in preorder, getting it this week), you're a frustrated user, venting your frustration the wrong way.
What did you expect when you created this topic? Did you think people would agree with you en-masse, and send their devices (which many people have been waiting a long time for) back straight away?
The reason I'm asking this question is that I think you didn't stop to think about it. If the product doesn't do what it's advertised to do, you're entitled to return it. If you feel you need to share your experience with the world, you can write a review. Be it to "protect" others, or simply express your outrage, a well written review gives everyone (you, others and the manufacturer) a chance to see your point more clearly.
Thus, I advise you to refrain from going on about this in here and write a comprehensive review, noting both the pro's and the cons. Then let other people decide what they do, instead of telling them what they should.

Instead of your iPhone 3G 'imagination', why not look at antennagate.... and as seen then, no one gave a damn (as seen by sales figures) even when it was a critical component, GSM being disrupted due to poor signal and even so Apple claimed that you were 'holding it wrong'. Asus has done no such thing, that imo already raises it far above Apple.
As for first-gen, I agree with the way Angelusz uses it because after all, this is the first Tegra 3 device, fullstop. There have to be kinks to be ironed out and all with a new SoC and there's no device before it using Tegra 3 so the usage is perfectly valid.

Unfortunantly many of us are unable to return our devices due to Retail return policies for tablets. I could get mine exchanged but that gets me nowhere.

That we're bringing up Apple devices is interesting, considering that the TF201 has better Wi-Fi performance than the original Wi-Fi iPad according to tests by a user here - Apple, too, made a device with an aluminium back (and the little window doesn't seem to have made much of a difference). How's that iPad's GPS reception? Oh, Apple doesn't put them in Wi-Fi iPads at all. Of course, the original iPad benefited from not having a previous, plastic device to compare it to, but there were still a lot of complaints:

So Apple made the same decision as Asus, didn't even give the option of GPS, got a lot of complaints, and... the iPad was a massive success. Apple devices, eh?
I do think that it was a bad idea for Asus to announce the TF700T now though. It's going to affect sales of the current device. It would have been better to wait until the end of Q1.
I think this young man makes a great point. Some of you have no use for GPS, I understand, but some of us that spends 500 would like to get our money worth. That means things should work as advertise. It is a bait and switch really. I'm not pissed that Asus came out with a new tablet, I'm pissed that my tablet is compromised and they're not doing anything about it. I can't take mine back because they don't refund. If you let these company do that, they'll continue to do that next time. Rush to release a product and hope that they can update it later, or if they can't, release a new model and let the customers suffer. Also, the hardware and the OS are almost synonymous, if you got a bad device, people will perceive the OS as bad as well. I know this is going to turn many people to getting an ipad even.
Now just as a devils advocate: is anyones gps COMPLETELY NON FUNCTIONING? I don't wanna hear weak, not good, sometimes, NON FUNCTIONING. If it is, you can get it replaced through RMA. Is it working at all? Then Asus didn't lie or make something up that wasn't true. I'm trying to think about this like a lawyer. Since the gps chip is functioning, it does get a signal and can handle most location acquisition tasks. I understand its not a Garmin but there was never a promise of this. GPS was a listed spec. It never made any claims as to its ability as a gps. This is where I see a problem with the Bait and Switch Argument.
Also, if everyones so damn smart here, then why didn't anyone think that the aluminum backing would have problems with signals? I think people are just a little mad maybe because they're so brilliant that overlooked something that everyone already knew would be a "problem"
In a week, my GPS has found exactly one satellite, promptly lost it and never did locate me. Left it in the car all day in a parking lot to see if it could sort itself out, all it did was drain the battery. Willing to look past it however, for the dock and battery life, and otherwise it was satisfactory (haven't tried BT/wifi yet, though, might be a deal killer)
Last night's ICS update gave me banding and market won't finish downloading anything, even post-wipe. Obviously fixable via software, but nonetheless the experience continues to fade. Plus, it's almost a doorstop while I have to sideload everything. Even my hacked-to-death Pandigital novel that I got at Kohls with some socks and 30% discount coupon is more stable than this.
There is no way that this product was conceived solely to make high schoolers pee themselves over frame rates on XDA. Businesses are going to begin equipping employees en masse with tablets of some sort, and thus far this was Android's best shot at heading off Apple, because it is a familiar form factor that Apple doesn't yet offer. I am in a role where I get to have some input on this issue for my Fortune 500 company, and I simply can't imagine showing this mess to the IT stakeholders like I had originally hoped. Keeping mine for now, but I see the OP's point of this being a strike against Android for enterprise, which is where the money has barely been tapped.

Thx man finally someone who thinks. Was just about to suggest to the thread started to get an ipad. You wont get a better product but marketing makes you believe that everythings fine.

Believe it or not, some people are not having BT/WiFi issues. I'm not. I really like my Prime....and frankly, I don't want to send it in just to wait for something else that may or may not be coming out in a couple months and may or may not be any better. Maybe they're rushing the next one out as well and it'll have it's own slew of problems. So please, stop telling me if I should be happy with my Prime or not and what I should do with it just because you are having problems.
It's not going to destroy Android. It's not going to hurt Android. If anything, It'll hurt ASUS.

Believe it or not, some people are not having BT/WiFi issues. I'm not. I really like my Prime....and frankly, I don't want to send it in just to wait for something else that may or may not be coming out in a couple months and may or may not be any better. Maybe they're rushing the next one out as well and it'll have it's own slew of problems. So please, stop telling me if I should be happy with my Prime or not and what I should do with it just because you are having problems.
It's not going to destroy Android. It's not going to hurt Android. If anything, It'll hurt ASUS.

'VALUE THE FUTURE OF ANDROID' is like saying returning your Prime will save the world lol. I'm with this guy, if you don't like it call the BBB, Asus, and your retailer and make them take it back but you're *****ing at the wrong people. Even though I've had to RMA mine for screen bleed, I'm still highly impressed with Prime

ASUS Technical Support - why bother?

I ordered my TF201 32GB from Office Depot and received it in early January. Unboxed it, turned it on, installed some apps etc. then left charging overnight. Next morning noticed unit was not charged and down to 25% or so. Used another outlet but no improvement. Then froze the power unit as suggested in the forum. Called Asus Technical Support and troubleshooted the unit. CSR convinced it was the unit itself; asked me to ship unit to Texas facility (at my dime of course). 2 weeks later unit was shipped back (took 9 days since it was Fedex Ground from CA to NY!).
Unboxed unit and noticed that battery at 5%! Plugged in and... Nothing. Not charging!! Called ASUS - probably same idiot with whom I spoke the first time. Asked me to ship it back (on my dime) again to Texas but different RMA! Had no explanation as to why the RMA number should be different but I guess whoever they outsourced repairs to does not want to report to ASUS that they did not fix an issue the first time..CSR told me to only ship unit AGAIN. I challenged him that it may makse sense because, god forbid, it may be charger at fault! He said "ok" ship it back too.. thank you very kind of you to keep an open mind MR. ASUS CSR... I also mentioned that it seems unfair I pay for shipping again... so he sent me a Fedex label.. ground of course so 3-4 days to Texas (no ground pick up on weekends) and then another few days for the geniuses at whoever does the repair to figure it out and another 5-6 days to ship back.. so all in all 6 weeks since purchase and I have not used my Prime.. I had bought my wife an ASUS UX21 since she travels a lot for work but I returned it to Amazon for a refund within the 30 day window.. had to pay a fee to return but hey probably saved her (and me) a lot of aggravation.. her Toshiba ultrabook is working just fine thank you very much. Totally frustrated by idiots at ASUS. I cancelled the dock purchase at Office Depot too. As much as I do not like Apple products at least you can find an Apple Store everywhere and get a replacement and/or a technician to take a look and troubleshoot.. and iPads cost the same as a PRIME.. I am done with Asus.. once this is fixed it goes on Craigslist or eBay. Not sure what else I'll get.. anyone want to order my ASUS? It will be cheap.. once I get it back.
This reminds me of an experience we had with an Asus RMA, it was one of their eeePC models (back when they were the hot thing to get). We had to send the device back a total of three or four times before the issue was finally properly repaired. Asus can be kinda poor when it comes to some more obscure RMA situations, I totally understand your frustration.

Sounds completely understandable on your stance. Unacceptable customer service. Damn Asus, is the RMA place really that bad. Not all are bad experiences but there's been too many bad stories popping up lately. Good luck on choosing new device. As much as i like my Prime, if I had to go through what some people have, I'd give up on them also.

My 14-day return window is up today. I'm bringing back the TFP.
Even though I've had no problems with mine, I've heard too many stories like this. Too much negativity surrounding this device to allow me to enjoy it. I will downgrade my specs requirement and will go with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Have I read this right? You have a perfectly fine functioning tfp, but are returning it because others have had bad experiences, and you have heard too many stories!
This sounds like you give more credence to other peeps woes rather than go by your own

Yes...you heard it right. I previously had the Galaxy Tab and was fairly happy with it's performance (sans ICS). Really wanted to try the TFP...so I returned the GT and got one to try myself even with all of the negativity expressed here. While I encountered no real issues myself...I couldn't help think about whether or not the TFP would become but a blip on the radar for ASUS support and dev efforts. Sure, the TFP is newer technology than the GT....perhaps I'm just not willing to be one of their beta testers. The GT has been out long enough now to iron out a lot of the wrinkles...plus, ICS is still to come which will almost certainly improve performance.
I'm not slamming the TFP...just wasn't impressed enough with it over the GT to risk being subjected to Asus' tech support should that have been required.

Well.. I love my current Prime and I'm waiting on my second to get here next week along with my dock!
Newegg won't even accept my return because the serial number sticker next to the charging port is gone....
They don't care to turn it on and check the serial in settings to match it with the box and warranty papers.
Looks like a lot of us have had bad experiences because of this tablet. I'm waiting for the TF700T but I might be going with another company.

THIS^^^is a follower. Worried too much about what others are thinkn instead of making decisions based on hour own thinking. PLUS the comment about not sure about further Asus support or developement is ignorant at the least. ASUS has been constantly pumping out updates. Name one other company who released as many OTA updates as the Prime received. WE had ICS. We had root already out the box basically. We Had overclock in less than a month. We had Ubuntu n Linux n other flavors lf it already n less than a month. We already have extra drivers n such being added by dev. In less than a month. We already have root for ICS. We already have some minor theming going on. All this without even having bootunlocker tool yet. For you to make such a statement is kinda disrespect to hard work developers have been doing already here. Name another tablet as new as this one thst had so many things developement wise in its first month of existence. You forgetting its still barely over a month since people first started receiving their primes.

I care about my investment and how I feel about it. It's all speculation right now as to how much develpment will occur for the tfp at this point...guess I'm just bowing out as I don't wish to be part of the guessing. I do know the Galaxy Tab has been rewarded.
As far as me not experiencing any earth-crushing issues, I'd say that's true. However, I'm sitting here inside my home typing away on my GalaxyTab with a lock on 8 satellites. And wifi range is excellent EVERYWHERE in my home (and I am talking about a significant difference)...I now get my expected 22-24Mbps down from anywhere in my house whereas before would only achieve these speeds right beside my router and would get 4-6Mbps down further away. Still useable...but pale in comparison to the speeds I get with the GT.
I tested both the TFP and the GT within a month period....I feel better with the sammy and went back to it. How is that being a follower? I tried both extensibly for myself to arrive at a decision I felt comfortable with. As far as the negativity being a factor in my decision...hell yeah. Why shouldn't it be? Had I not been offered the chance to return the TFP easily, I never would have bought it based on what I've read here...some would say that's part of the research done when considering a purchase. After testing it out, I wasn't blown away...for my needs, there was nothing that the GT couldn't do just as well plus with gps and wifi working much better. For sure, it only has 2 cores...maybe I'm good with that.
I do hope everyone feels good about their purchase. I didn't and did the logical thing.

My question is how you figure 6 weeks? How many weeks are there in January if today is the 28th?
On a serious note, why not try to find a charger from Frys or OD or Staples. The ones for the OG TF 101 work and determine if the problem is the charger or not?

OK, completely understandable then. I see where you really coming from from this post.
As far as your second quote,I'm not really waiting for anything. I was just told my device is one of early one built. Device still works great but if I'm offered an opportunity to upgrade it to newer parts, then why wouldn't I. Lol. It'll make it even better, I would hope. I still love this device and has done everything I've asked of it n more. Only complaint I would have is GPS. I know that's very important to some people and deciding factor whether to keep it or not. For me, its no big deal. Everything is great aside from GPS. Just thankful I don't have issues some others been describing. Kinda makes it hard to believe when your device working so well. But its a given.
One thing though, Asus better step their game up with the quickness. I have a feeling if they don't address the possible issues on prime, their new upgrade model will be a fail LR do worse. As Prime n t-700 basically share all the same internal components. It'll be in Asus best interest to attack these issues head on. ASUS Losing people everyday. They gaining also but still. People with issues want to keep device but won't since some are riddled with issues. Can't be mad for someone wanting to return a device that's not working properly for them.

First off: I am not anti-Google. I use all the main Google apps. I have had four Android phones, own 2 Nexus 7's and would take Android over iOS any day of the week.
But...
I am through with this piece of crap that passes for the Nexus 10.
Since buying this thing when it first came out I have had to put up with dodgy wifi connections, creaky flexing back panels, random freezes and reboots, and - worst of all - deal-breakingly poor quality control on the screens. I have been through several RMAs with Google Play (to the point where they are refusing to send me any more replacements - and at the moment they are not even replying to my emails) and am now on my 5th device. All of the devices have had unacceptable levels of light bleed, and - worse still - blotchy screens with uneven yellow or blue tints. I have been through nightmares with the Play store and TNT trying to get devices returned and shipped, and have a pile of email correspondence so long that it could be turned into a Peter Jackson trilogy. The Play store is staffed by some of the greatest morons that I have ever had the misfortune to have to deal with. I have constantly been given wrong or misleading information, and have had to harass and badger them at every stage to get anything done. I still have a device listed as 'pending' on my Google Wallet that has long since been returned, despite being told on numerous occasions that an 'expert' was going to remove it.
For anyone with a perfect device, or who is just happy with their's however it is: I am genuinely pleased for you. This could, and more importantly, should, have been an amazing piece of kit. But as it is, my time with the Nexus 10 has been, without any shadow of a doubt, the absolute worst customer experience I have had in my entire life, by a long country mile.
My blotchy, creaky, light bleedy slab of **** is going back. I'll be getting a full refund and returning to my long neglected iPad. Which actually works like it's supposed to.

When you got the second sample and were still unhappy then it was masochistic to keep trying. You should have given up and ended the pain way before getting to the fifth device. Clearly it is not designed to the quality you require and most, if not all, of the samples were probably typical of the quality of everyone else's.
Crap is in the eye of the beholder. Many others, including myself, are not sensitive to the defects you point out. I don't care about an occasional reboot (which only happened in the first day for me), the light bleed, case cracking sounds, etc. Different people have different needs.
You were asking the support people to make the product right for you, which is probably impossible given that particular design. How do you expect them to behave? They certainly aren't going to say the nexus 10 is **** and they also can't say that you are wrong. The nexus 10 is not **** for most people and you are not wrong for wanting a particular level of quality.
To make a long story short you should walk away and spend your energy finding something better instead of banging your head against a lost cause.

Well it took me forever to get a good one... Returns and repairs but its pretty good now.
Funny you praise the nexus 7 while cursing this one. I got 8 crap n7s in a row. Finding one without bleed and lifted screen is like finding a unicorn. The ones not plagued by screen issues are pretty cool... The same can be said for the n10.

There is a difference between useful sharing of a bad experience and trashing it. He seems to be saying that he was harmed and the world owes him something. No company owes anyone anything unless they misrepresent the product or are outright fraudulent.
I actually feel sorry for the support team on this one. Sending 5 units is beyond the call of duty. I would quit responding to his emails also. A friend of mine worked in support and he called these customers "screamers". There was nothing you could do to make them happy. He wanted to tell them to give up and buy a competitors product but he could have lost his job for saying that.
It is *possible* he is an apple fan coming here to troll. I'm not accusing him but I've seen this on other forums many times. The fact that he says he is going back to his iPad is a clue.
I feel so sorry to the customer service handle your case.
Such customer shall be doing such job to learn the lesson.
Requesting 5 times changing was ridiculous. If 2nd change not fulfil your requirements. Stop continue and by just requested for full refund as it was known the thing never right nor matter how many times you change it.

Idk, on one hand, if he really wanted the device, 5 tries at it doesn't seem too bad. On the other hand, if decent QC was actually existent, then so many replacements wouldn't have to be issued to find an "acceptable" device (for $400 I wouldn't deal with excessive screen bleed nor a creaky back either; luckily I have neither on my first device though).
So, it's either deal with the QC flaws on a $400 device, or annoy CS because of lack of QC. Maybe annoying them will actually make Google/Samsung do some better QC
As for the Apple part, I do agree it is kind of unnecessary. But then again if that's the tablet that works for him, then meh.

Not trolling at all. Actually reading this on my Nexus 7 rather than my iPad. Android is so far ahead of iOS it feels like a backward step to have to use it. Was going to sell the thing if the Nexus 10 turned out right. Such a shame since the N10 pisses all over the iPad in every respect. Apart from the defective screen, obviously. I can overlook the creaks (put it in a case) and the light bleed (don't watch films in the dark).I can even overlook the WiFi and reboot issues, but an uneven screen is a deal breaker. I use my tablets primarily for reading, so yellow patches are highly distracting. And as for the Play Store staff: I have come across some who have been extremely helpful, but I've also been repeatedly given wrong information, lied to and messed about. The customer service is genuinely appalling. As for just giving in: it took me three exchanges to get a decent iPad (uneven screen again), so am not inclined to throw in the towel. What would make me happy? A reasonably uniform screen. I'm not looking for perfection. I know these are mass produced consumer products. But equally I see no reason to spend £300 on something sub-standard. If Google don't want me returning things then they should get their quality control sorted out. And yes - writing this has been cathartic.

As someone who has worked in retail for 17 year in positions that involve selling the general public goods what you hear from over the top customers is usually about 40% truth and 60% exaggeration in the hopes it will escalate their problem and get it resolved quickly to `their' satisifaction. Typically what is considered `their satisfaction' is a set of goal posts that never stops moving.
The replacement collectors I pay no attention to.. There is one dude around here that his signature is how he's had 5 Nexus 10 replacements and 5 Nexus 4 replacements.. Seriously.. I can't take that seriously..

Typically what is considered `their satisfaction' is a set of goal posts that never stops moving.
The replacement collectors I pay no attention to.. There is one dude around here that his signature is how he's had 5 Nexus 10 replacements and 5 Nexus 4 replacements.. Seriously.. I can't take that seriously..

Which part of my post do you think is an exaggeration? The part where I said that I wasn't looking for perfection, could live with light bleed, wifi drop-outs and reboots, but drew the line at wanting a 'reasonably' even screen in terms of temperature and light distribution was a clue as to what I consider my 'goalposts' to be. My iPad isn't perfect: the screen is not 100% uniform and it has minor light bleed. My Nexus 7 isn't perfect: it has some light bleed, wifi drop-outs and the screen flicker issue. My Android phone isn't perfect: the screen is not 100% even. But are they acceptable? Yes. Because. even though consumer devices are not perfect, they are of a 'reasonable' quality.
That = 'goalposts'.
Why is that too hard for some people to understand?

this thing is going to my sisters 7 year old. I already told him if he drops and breaks it he will be doing us all a favor. ever since the 4.2.2 update it became laggy in all areas.
i think the only good thing about this thing was the ppi.....i did a lot of ebook reading.
I ordered ( just got the confirmation from microsoft) a surface pro. sorry google, i tried so many times along with 4 rma's and i just cant do this any more. please open those brick motar stores you keep talking about. it will make it easier for us to return your products.

The customer service representatives tell you to return it until you get one you are satisfied with. Not the other way around. They are quick to offer another RMA. I stopped after the second one had horrible light bleed because I didn't want to play THEIR game any more. I got a refund and got the hell out of the crappy RMA merry go round. I'm waiting to hear if they have fixed the quality control issues but sadly it still sounds like a crap shoot.

Really? for me after 4.2.2 I find the tablet is more responsiveness and battery life is improved - not sluggish at all. I have not had a reboot so far while using the tabet but did experience a few wifi drops (reconnected after a few seconds). Still trying to figure out where wifi drops happen as I'm running a Asus RT-N66U (with Tomato firmware).
I am running stock and lost root after the OTA upgrade. Have you tried a factory reset?
I genuinely can't believe that people see the need to RMA their N10 (or any device) due to the smallest things that they've found by specifically looking for them. Yes my N10 has light bleed and yes it did have problems with rebooting (before 4.2.2) but it doesn't bother me.
I would never use an LCD screen on full brightness in a dark room so will never notice the small amounts of light bleed it has. The reboots are a software issue that can be fixed by an update and are so infrequent that they are almost insignificant anyway. And a 'creaky back' definitely doesn't warrant getting the thing replaced; it's plastic so is bound to creak when you purposely flex it which you're not supposed to do.
Is anyone else shocked by the sheer number of people that will happily request multiple replacements because of the stupidest things and then wonder why the price increases or the customer service seems rushed? They've somehow got pay for all the testing, repackaging, restocking and reselling of these apparently 'defective' devices.
