Replacement Cingular/AT&T 8525 issues - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

I've had a Cingular 8525 since Jan. of last year, and it worked flawlessly. I was interested in updating it to Windows Mobile 6, and posted a few questions on the forum under the Windows Mobile 6 forum for my device. However, as of recently the phone started to just go totally white when I would try to use the phone after pulling it out of my pocket, etc. I knew this was a common issue with the 8525, and a hard reset usually solved the problem with no issue. However, it kept happening more often. Sometimes even a hard reset wouldn't help. So, I called up the warranty division at AT&T and they agreed to send me a new AT&T 8525. I got it in the mail today. Great. New phone. I'm happy about that for sure, because the white screen issues won't happen anymore.
Here comes the problem. I'm sure most people (if not everyone) know that if you don't have any data plan on your account with Cingular/AT&T, the original Cingular 8525 would allow you data access if you set it up correctly. My old 8525 connects to the Internet, and I don't have a data package, and never have. I never get billed for it, and I've been doing it forever. My replacement 8525 when setup with these settings that I've been using fails to work. PIE will connect to the network, but it locks up at "Locating..." and then eventually spits and error that the remote computer disconnected.
As much as I hate to do it, I want to downgrade the AT&T firmware on the replacement phone they sent me back down to the Cingular firmware. Currently, the firmware I have on the old 8525 is ROM version 1.34.502.1, Radio version: 1.16.00.00. Is there any way to do it to my replacement 8525 with ease? I searched around and didn't find much step-by-step information, so if someone could kindly post exact instructions for me, I would greatly appreciate. I would be more than willing to search around some more and learn as much as possible about the process, but I really want to get this completely working with no errors before the weekend is over. Thanks.

Check THIS GUIDE.

Thanks for that info. Sure enough, after following the instructions you provided, I'm successfully down to my firmware version I had on my old 8525, and my data settings work perfectly. However, I have a different radio version, which is now 1.40.30.00. On the old 8525 I had the 1.16.00.00. Is this an issue?

I wonder if you were just encountering the bjilt in proxy in the newer roms? In the newer roms, to connect via isp.cingular, you need to disable the proxy. programs/proxy manager/disable proxy.
How are you getting free data?
How did you get att to warranty a ten month old device?

I'm getting the free data in conjunction with a feature I have on my account that is a legacy feature. So, even if I told you, you most likely wouldn't be able to get it added to your account, to my knowledge.
Thanks for the information, but I did try all variations of the different proxies and the APN names, but nothing worked. A friend of mine that works for AT&T just said to flash down, so that's what I did. All working now
Well, according to AT&T, my device was under warranty for 1 year, so they shipped me a replacement unit. I'm sending the old one back just as soon as I restore my stuff from my old device onto the new one.

Can an AT&T SX56 be used in Canada?

Ok everyone, I am a REAL NEWBIE and I've read most of the posts reagrding the SX56 and Rogers AT&T (Canada) but I really need some assurances and/or specific responses to my questions. Please help out if you can...
I want to bid-on / buy an SX56 on eBay and have it shipped to Canada for use on the Rogers AT&T network.
Do I need to do anything to get it to work on the Rogers AT&T network here in Canada. I understand I can simply use my SIMM card from my existing GSM phone.
However, I was talking with a guy from Siemens Canada today, and he cautioned me about buying a unit from USA because he suggested that they are usually "locked" for use with a particular carrier (AT&T or T-mobile). As a PDA or phone he felt that it would work. But, if I want to access the web, he felt I wouldn't be able to do so in Canada UNLESS the unit is "unlocked" and re-configured for use in Canada.
Does anyone know anything about this? Or even IF it can be done?
I am fairly competent with technology and computers, so don't be afraid be specific.
MANY THANKS, in advance, for all your help.... I really want to get this unit but they're selling in Canada for $800 CDN
Blair (Guinness)
The device does have to be SIM unlocked. There are tools on this site to do so if you need to.....and elsewhere as well. If it is not SIM unlocked you will NOT be able to use your existing card. If/once it is unlocked it will work on Rogers AT&T....mine does.
If you would like to see one in action, or see the new XDAII come to our users group meeting in Toronto tomorrow evening (Thursday)

I'll see you there... are you serious about the Guinness hat? If so, I'll look for you.
Yup!
ACK! I wish I could go. I'm a good 8 hours' drive though, coming up from K'zoo, MI.
Howdy,
I've been using the SX-56 on Rogers for the past 4 months. Actually I just upgraded the radio yesterday and also threw on a cooked ROM and this is working so much better than before.
If I just knew how to make this work with the Rogers GPRS network for browsing life would be GREAT.
I have it set for
internet.com
user: wapuser1
pw: wap
no DNS
but is there something required in the dial patterns?
Anybody have any tips for GPRS on Rogers in Canada?
Thanks,
Jim
Have you SUBSCRIBED to a DATA PLAN with Rogers AT&T yet?
I understand that you need to add the DATA PLAN to your existing service for it to work.
Somewhere else in this Forum I read this... "You do not use goam, simply change that to internet.com and user name is : wapuser1 and password: wap. do not put any D.N.S. or anything. give that a try."
I forgot to ask you...
You UPGRADED the Radio? What do you mean?
Also, which "cooked rom" did you use?
I'm guessing that you need to "copy" the ROM file onto an SD Card and then load it onto your SX56??? Is that correct? What size of SD Card do you need?

Hi,
I do have a Data Plan with Rogers.
I think I need something modified in my Dial Pattern - not really sure how it should be changed.
Anyways - I went to www.yorch.net and went to the Upgrades. i was able to get a new Radio version for the GSM portion of the phone - simply download, hook up via cable and run the RSupgrade that is included in the zip - phone works 1000000% better now.
In the same site you can create your own ROM - i made one and added / removed different apps. Then i ran the ROM upgrade utility - I made it as an EXE and it simply redid my os on the PDA portion - took around 45 min to copy everything over.
I can't wait to get this working properly....

It should work with the settings you are using. How strong is your signal? If you have a weak signal it's not likely to connect.
Otherwise call Rogers and ask them to reset your acount, then wait a few minutes and give it another go.

Are you available to answer a couple of questions over the telephone tonight?
Did I give you my phone number at the meeting last week?
I've had my SX56 working relatively well with Rogers for a few months now too. However, I find that my signal is very weak compared to my faithful Nokia 8390. Do any of you guys have a problem with a weak signal?
I'm using ROM: 4.00.16 and Radio:6.12

Should I switch to Cingular 8525?

My TyTN is bricked thanks to my trying to update it to the Cingular aku3.3 ROM -- with so many others in the same situation I've been unable to obtain any specific help (I've gone thru the Wiki and numerous threads and tried every suggested fix I could find, all to no avail) and I desparately need to get my pda phone working. After learning that HTC has no servicing location in the USA and their branded service center (I contacted Cingular HTC service center) won't work on my TyTN, I've concluded it's not a good idea to buy another TyTN. So I'm ready to go to the local Cingular dealer and signup for a 2-yr contract so I can purchase an 8525 for about half what I'd pay for the TyTN (Cingular is my provider so I only need the equipment).
BUT..... if there is ANY hope I could recover my dead TyTN I'd much prefer to do that. It's just that time is short and, as I said, I really rely on my pda phone.
Thanks for any help offered.
What's wrong with it specifically? I think there might be something wrong with mine as well...
In my case I got an error when it was 91% complete on the ROM upgrade -- since then I can't boot into WinMobile -- it boots to the Cingular/ATT logo then goes blank, so I have no access to it at all except via the bootloader. As I said, the Wiki has loads of useful info and how-to suggestions but none of them seem to work for my "brick". And I really need to make a decision.
Crap, that sucks.
I upgraded to the "HTC Test" ROM, and now I cannot make outgoing calls. About 40 - 50% of my calls are met with "Call cannot be completed as dialed," and I am frustrated as hell. So then I downgraded and got the same results.
So then I went to the new 2.06 Cingular (AT&T) ROM with no luck, and then downgraded (again) to the earlier Cingular ROM (I don't recall which version).
I ahve a fully functioning device, but I cannot make calls! (Well, some go through.) I should mention my data is working like a champ. My next step is to try a new Cingular SIM - my T-Mobile SIM also works just fine, both data and voice.
Hmm...

Sim unlocking kicking my butt

Hey all, this is the first post. It's 1am here, and i've been trying to unlock this thing with all the software i've found here, and i can't do it.
i got an 8525 from cingular, trying to use it in t-mobile networks, no luck.
everytime i go to try out the new sim card, it says its lock. now, it says 10 times tried, wait for timeout.
i don't know what the hell to do now.
please give me some walk throughs, cuz im really stumped. thanks!

update
i've been pushin hard to get this thing functional, and i finally got it. it was tricky to get the system to push through the software with vista, but i followed a few directions (listed below) to help along the process.
if anyone has windows vista, i would highly advise you to try this method. it worked for me first time up.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=27
using this software:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
(be sure to click on the lower link in the first post)
first get your system compatible with the gear (let windows detect all the stuff), install windows mobile device center.
reboot
next install the new drivers for the htc usb sync.
reboot
finally, extract and run the unlocking software.
watch your phone for the program. it takes a few minutes, so just be patient. i think if i would've found the vista methods prior to starting this, i would have been finished by now. oh well. good luck!!
edit: nm you got it
Same problem...
I had the same problem however I was just waiting to receive that damn subsidy unlock code from AT&T. Their retrieval process is very slow and painful, but unlocked my 8525 no problem. My question for you is did you notice a difference in call volume between carriers?? I am trying to determine if this was the fault of flashing my ROM to a custom one, or if that's just how t-mobile sounds...

Call volume
I never had AT&T, so i couldn't tell you honestly. One thing I am noticing is that the dropped calls are not as frequent since I upgraded from a samsung.
The trickiest part of modding this WM6 phones, is that you gotta have the comm stuff current with T-Mobile.
I haven't been able to get my MMS working. Now i just messed up my networking stuff. I have some cab files for the T-Mobile devices, but i don't know how to install them. I am working on it.
As far as volume though (back to the subject, dumbo)... It seems clearer somewhat.

[Q] Samsung SGH-T959 Network Failure

My Samsung SGH-T959 Will not connect to the T-Mobile GSM network. All other functions appear to work OK. The phone worked well enough until I needed to use it in Britain last week. Until then, it was stock from the store, locked to T-Mobile USA.
I needed connectivity so I unlocked the phone and used it with a Vodaphone (lebaru) pay-as-you-go sim. At first it would not register with the provider, but I gave the phone to the agent (some Arab guy in a small shop...) and after they kept it overnight, it worked. On returning to the US I put the original SIM back in the phone. Now it won't register with T-Mobile. Sometimes it finds ATT towers when I scan for network providers, sometimes it does not. It never sees T-mobile.
I have verified that it is unlocked, and done a hard reboot and washed away the internal Flash storage. The behaviour does not improve. I have tried two known-good SIM cards.
I have read many posts that seem to indicate that others are having similar problems, but I haven't seen any answers (or even explanations).
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Ok, I guess that I'll need to use Heimdal, as I don't have windows. But where do I get a 'stock' image to load? If what I have is not stock, how do I know what it is? And if I come to the point of having to load alternate 'ROMs', which do I choose. There seem to be so many caveats.
What I find really perplexing is my phone's sudden inability to lock to the tower corresponding to the sim provider I'm using. With other phones and modules I have used over the years, this was ever an issue. You put in an ATT sim, the device tries to connect to an ATT tower. You put in T-Mobile or Vodaphone, then it tries to connect to the corresponding resource. It almost seems as if there is a small hidden file somewhere in the bowels of the beast that overrides the sim's preference.
Still trying...
Ok, after much wailing, flailing, and gnashing of teeth, I have sorted out more of the vocabulary of this forum, hopefully attached it correctly to the relevant concepts in my head. I feel that I am making progress of a sort. I have also installed Heimdall under Linux, Odin under Windows, Kies and a variety of minor tools. I have tried them cautiously, but avoided any rash actions. I believe that I will make a unbricking cable for good measure.
But my phone still won't connect to the T-Mobile (US) tower. Scanning for 'networks' only shows ATT, and I'm pretty sure that I can't even talk to that using an ATT sim.
My working theory is based on the events that got me to this point (but still far too little knowledge about my phone) and goes as follows:
When I had the phone unlocked, this was done properly, but my T-Mobile (US) 'MODEM' (which I assume to be the signal processor code that controls the physical layer radio interaction) was not able to negotiate a session properly with the Vodaphone (UK) tower. I took the phone back to the person who unlocked it, and he/she/it realized the problem and updated that part of the code, allowing me to connect with the 'network'.
I never mentioned to the phone-unlocker that I only planned to stay in the UK for 10 days. It didn't occur to me that upon returning home, I might encounter the flip side of this problem. And if he/she/it happened to think of this possibility, he/she/it figured I'd be well out of his/her/whatever hair by the time I noticed. Which I am.
So my operating assumption is that I need to reverse the initial modification of my firmware, restoring the initial functionality to the 'MODEM'. I have yet to find a trove of alternative 'MODEM' code, but responses to queries by others seem to imply that one exists. I am reluctant to attempting to flash the device back to the original state, mostly because I am not sure what that state was. I've downloaded a bunch of stuff (i.e. Odin + .pit files) but I'm nervous about whether they are really the right ones for my phone.
Can anyone tell me if I am on the right track?

You should download the AIO Vibrant Toolbox since it have all the instructions and files you need to revert back to stock. Its pretty easy.
Instead of typing so much, odin back to stock. Man I hate fast typers. /crazy.flailing.arm.tube.man

Really no way to get Internet Sharing on sim-unlocked Titan?

I have a SIM-unlocked AT&T Titan, and I was looking forward to using it to the max.
However, I've run into a problem. When I click Internet Sharing, it tells me to contact AT&T. My carrier allows tethering, and I don't think AT&T will do anything for me.
What is my recourse?

Throw the Titan in the ocean. Seriously though, not much you can do. I am using an AT&T "unlocked" Titan on Tmobile that I bought from Microsoft and I can't tether even though Tmobile doesn't care. Until someone manages to unlock this phone it is really a worthless investment. Don't get me wrong, I love the promise of the Titan it's just that the corporate scumbags at AT&T have severely disabled it.

I wish AT&T, being the "premier partner" of WP7, wasn't allowed to hobble it so severely.
AT&T Charges a premium for tethering. So why do you expect AT&T ever give you a phone with free tethering? It locked down iPhones and Android phones. Wp7 will not be any different.

Tethering is possible if you follow the "permanent unlock" post further up on the topics list. This permanent unlock has the added advantage of enabling internet sharing on OTHER NON-ATT sims. Be careful NOT TO RUN HTC Connection Setup after you do this as somehow this little HTC apop reenables the ATT internet sharing lock. I am posting this with an ATT Titan with Permannent unlock and a TMOBILE sim with Internet sharing enabled. Unfortunately all I can manage is edge with Tmobile in this phone but I assume in Europe I can have full 3g. This hack does not enable Internet sharing with an ATT sim unless you have the tethering plan. And for what it's worth, ATT are cretan ass*****s when it comes to tethering. I bought their PAYGO 1 gig data plan and it will not allow me to tether. Please explain to my why the f*** I shouldn't be able to tether when I PAY for a specific amount of data??!! Obviously I can't HOG bandwidth as I PAID for this data. When I go over my 1 gig I am charged more. Seriously, ATT have their heads up their a** and I am looking forward to seeing them go out of business. They are simply the worst provider on the planet and should be boycotted at all costs.

Hi,
I think I have found the solution to this issue (a lill time consuming though).. It wasn't working for me and after doing the following I am able to do the internet sharing on my unlocked AT&T HTC Titan...
First you need to reset your phone to factory settings by doing the following (beware that all your personal data, applications and settings will be gone so better sync your phone with your PC first.. ):
Go into settings->about->reset your phone (you might need to scroll to the bottom). It confirms twice.. do that to reset your phone
After the phone is back on, try setting it up as your would do to a new device.
*** HTC Connection Wizard or Setup(whatever is that app called) seems to be the culprit so DO NOT install that app ever if you want the tethering to work.. It seems it resets some registereis as soon as it is switched on which blocks the tethering there after**
You might want to use 'reinstaller' app from the market place which will help you get all your previously installed apps by connecting to the Windows Live account and going through the list of apps you ever installed using that Windows live account. This process is the most tedious one but still better then nothing..
Once all this is done, connect your phone back to your PC and sync back in all the content that you lost from your cell while resetting.
Hope this helps.

Not working at all..it is not giving option for not installing HTC apps..by default it is taking it and not allowing to back or doing something else..
@vatsal1212 - I did the same prior to Dft HSPL and it didn't work for me too. If you want the IS to work with your AT&T phone you will need to flash custom (fully unlocked) rom. However, it is not a straight forward process especially with AT&T branded Titan. I suggest for you to read these related threads:

Getting rid of this message is easy if you have interop unlock. You will need to send root tools to the phone with a xap deployment tool (like from the windows phone sdk) then use the registry editor to add this value
[HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings] OpenMarketEnabled=dword:1
Then edit this value so it reads:
[HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings] EntitlementURI=./Vendor/MSFT/Registry/HKLM/Comm/InternetSharing/Settings/OpenMarketEnabled
Here's a link to a thread that explains the process poorly. The key is to have the two lines above in your registry. No matter how you get to the regediting step. Worked for my focus flash.
