I found a very nice & Slim universal charger on Kensington's site for Notebook, PSP, Ipod (yes I have all this stuff in my backpack...), but a tip for hermes seems to be missing.
Does anybody now a similr device with Hermes tip too?
TX
Basically anything with a mini-USB plug will work.
That's not been my experience. If it connects something to the data pins it will work, if not, it won't charge correctly.
I used my old Motorola V3 wall charger to charge mine for a while, worked fine - thats a standard mini-USB connection. Also used a Motorola V3 car charger, and I've just bought a Brodit car cradle for my device which has a fixed mini-USB which works fine?

Interesting. We've found that unless the charger has pins 4 and 5 bridged ('unused pin' to 'ground') on the mini usb end then the hermes will act strangely. It will start charging the first time you insert but then it might stop and then it won't charge again until you reset it.
The pin doesnt need to be bridged when theres a data source like a pc on the other the end.
Could you check to see if your chargers have those pins bridged or not?

I have not been doing any kind of research about bridging those pins because I just read about it first time, but my experience about charging problems are very similar to yours. My TyTN won't charge normally via USB-hub or car-adaptor, and after failing the charging process, it won't start charging again. Resetting helps after this, but I think that also waiting resets the situation. But that I'm not so sure about.
When I connect it directly to PC, it works just fine.
If bridging those pins helps, my car charging problems are wiped out

Hahah not really, ever tried getting to those pins? They're tiny!

Yes, they are tiny at the other end, but bigger at the other
And if that causes still problems, cutting the wire is not so big deal either, then you can easily connect wires together

Except that pin 4 doesn't have a wire connected to it (only 1,2,3,5) because the other end only has 4 pins

Damn .. then it's not so easy.
But I guess it's still possible, without totally breaking the plug. I hope ...
Interesting. That is exactly the issues I see using a 12V/USB adapter and cable in my car. Well hopefully in 2-3 months when my free vehicle charger comes from Cingular it will have the pins bridged and work properly!!!!
I wonder if the bridged pins and data cause the bluetooth to turn off after a period of time. I see that happen on my phone often when its connected and charging. But disconnected from the 12V/USB charger the BT stays on.
Thanks for testing and posting.
I had this exact problem with my m5000 to, i use a ipod battery extender as a backup for my m3100 as i regularaly find the need for extra power.
Quick work around for this problem is to power down completely by holding the power button. Then plug it in while turned off, wait for charging light to go orange then switch back on, will continue charging then until plug is removed.

So, I don't understand: in the end, does it work or not with an adapter for V3?
If yes I could by that...

If it helps any, I use an iGo universal power adaptor (available from Radio Shack and Expansys) which uses the iTips style device-specific tips. This is very similar to the Kensington system, although I believe the two are now incompatible.
Tip A53 (which is also designed for AudioVox phones) works well for me with my T-Mobile MDA Vario II.

Guys, I'm convinced the usb connector on my 9 month old TP is defective and gets worse each time I use it. I had bought a touchstone charger to ease the connector wear but still, I was eventually having problems with USB data connectivity using store bought cables. I even sent my TP in to fix the connector and when I got it back, still no USB connectivity. Just a completely wiped TP. So HP sent me one of their "genuine" silver dot cables and low and behold it worked fine. (My original cable was lost)
Now, months later, I'm having problems with the USB data connection again. I either get the "Not enough current message" in WebOS or no MTP USB symbol in CM9. Sometimes the PC will chime positively but with an error message (can't detect device). I received another genuine HP cable and it behaves the same as the other one. Inserting them normally, they appear to be in tight, the PC will chime but Windows will say that there's a problem, can't detect device. The only way to get it to work is to insert the microusb side at a 45 degree angle tilted downward and hold it in for 5 seconds, then (ever so slowly) release the pressure to the connector. 50% of the time I'll get a Windows message that says the USB is degraded and run slower than normal (which I think means it thinks its in USB1.1 slow xfer mode) and 50% it works fine at USB 2.0 (until I pull the cable out of the connector). I also have 2 store bought cables that won't ever successfully connect to USB with the TP but work fine with my Samsung cell in both charging and xferring music over to the phone.
So what I'm getting at here is that no standard microusb cable is the same and that there must be something special about the HP genuine one. Do these cables have a resistor on pin 4 ID tied to GND pin 5? Even so, I think what is wearing the most is pins 1 & 2 and maybe 3 (VCC and the data pins) which is why it may only work by concentrating on seating those pins first. Does it make sense that the 'can't detect device' message comes up with just the data lines and ground connected but no VCC? For that matter, why would the battery symbol in CM9 always show the lightning bolt assuming pin 1 VCC is not connected?
I'd appreciate any responses from other members here since I believe without USB the TP could be bricked in case some boot code gets corrupt and you are forced into WebOS recovery mode. This has never happened to me yet and I've installed a lot of nightlies but it COULD happen, no guarantees. What is inevitable is my connector will eventually wear out and my TP will only live until the bootloader DOES get corrupt, hopefully later than sooner. This could be the case with all TP's. Just imagine if in a couple of years everyone's TP's USB port goes bad. Sounds like the devs should figure out a way to fix a bricked TP wirelessly, if that's at all possible.
Thanks,
synchron
One of my Touchpad's had the same problem in Webos it said using wrong charger may not charge or something similar and with Android ie nightly the charging signal came up but it did not charge.
I spoke to HP and pointed out that I have 2 Tablets and that swapping leads or chargers made no difference all combinations worked on one but not the other.
They agreed to fix it and replaced the part. It is now working fine. And as with yours my computer failed to recognize the tablet properly.19 times out of 20 on the one time it did I was able to back up and remove Android before HP picked it up.
I would send it back under warranty or if that has expired state that it was preexisting. Otherwise as you said it is going to become pretty much unusable.
Don't let them fob you off.
Good luck

go to palm support and CHAT with them. do not call cuz that cost money.
once u get an RMA they will send a box and take care of Shipping.
then go here to wipe and remove android

Thanx for your prompt responses. I bought my TP at the 2nd fire sale through BB in early Nov so I still got a few more months but I would rather wait a bit more since they did nothing the 1st time around. I think the connector is on some daughter board along with the vibrate device which is soldered to the main board. Doesn't sound like a big deal to repair it. Still, what makes the HP cable different then the others? Are there known cables I can get online that might be made better to always work and make better contact than the HP ones?

Thanks for your advice. Did they fix everything that was intended? Was turn around time no longer than 2 weeks for each repair? When was your last repair (busted speaker) done? Is your serial number the same or did you ever get a replacement (meaning a refurbished one) back?
Thanks

i keep track of the serials and they always came back the same. i have more than one pad and i asked for one to be replaced completely. we will see if that happens. but they fix only what u ask for and nothing else.
it can take longer depending on Weekends. takes 2 days to get your box, then 2 days to get it to HP, then 3- 4 days to get your fixed unit. its all done thru UPS, cant send it out on the weekends or receive it

Hi all. I know this thread is really old, but I'm finding myself dealing with similar issues. And I'm obviously out of warranty. I can't get windows, linux, or Toolbox to pick up the USB. I'm actually in a worse case scenario mention here and am stuck in meboot, TWRP, and WebOS recovery, because I had wiped the rom. It must be an issue with the USB port, I've lost track of my original Hp touchpad OEM cable, and have tried every USB cable I can find. Any help would be appreciated.
Like a week ago my S3 9300 was taking longer and longer to charge now it won't charge at all, now is always stuck at 0% if i turn it off it will charge but very very slowly, i don't know if it's the phone or the battery maybe someone here had the same problem and could help me out a little, btw i have it with CM 10.1 thank you
Alejo
Had the same exact problem with my i9300, got it out of warranty repairs yesterday. Was using a custom rom, but the same thing happened when I finally managed to flash it back to stock (had to manually press the microusb-cable as hard as I could into the phone all the time in order to get the phone recognized while Odin was working, was the longest flash ever lol..).
Remember reading about cold solder joints etc before sending it off, so if your phone is out of warranty for some reason you could replace the charging port yourself. Replacement part costs ~5$ (eBay) and if you got the skills it shouldn't be too hard to replace.
EDIT: Actually mine didn't even charge when power off, so I was pretty certain it was a bad solder joint or some other physical problem.. Have you tried cleaning the usb port with pressured air or just blowing into the port? Could be some pins of the usb port blocked with debris. Also check your usb cables, there are those with 5 pins and those with only 4. Saw the difference in charging speed while the thing was still working.

Well actually when i plug the phone into the PC it will recognize it and i can access the files in the SD card and Internal Memory and everything at the moment it's turned off and it's charging.
I have the problem that the phone only want to charge with soms chargers.
I can connect the phone to the original charger or to a pc or any device without problems, the phone will charge.
Even with an old blackberry charger (only 2 wires, no data) and car charger can i charge without any problem!
But when i connect the phone to the htc charger of my old phone, or to an iphone charger i see the phone is connected but it won't charge.
When i open batterymonitor i see that the charger is connected, but the phone still use his battery.
I tried this with all kinds of charders and all kinds of micro usb cables. Then i thaught there was maybe a resistor or chip or something build in some chargers, because i couls only charge with chargers with 2 wire cables.
Then i took a usb extension cable and i disconnected the two data wires so only the + and - 5V cables were left,
but still no success. If anybody knows where the problem is, please let my know
with kind regards! Martijn
Help! My Samsung Galaxy S4 won't charge or connect to a computer. I've tried different chargers, cables, plug in locations, car, 110, computer. There is no dirt. Connection is clean. I have a spare battery and both of them will charge on the battery charger. I have tried backed up roms. I have done a factory reset.
All of this and nothing helped. Am willing to try anything. Verizon is going to send me a refurb.

Is there any indication of a connection being made? If not, you should just wait for the refurb. If you have rooted, I really doubt Verizon will honor the warranty on the broken phone. I wish you the best.

sounds like contacts are on the phone side are damaged or the micro usb port is damaged.
Have you plugged into to a pc just to see if it can "see" the device and connect?
You stated it cannot connect to a pc, so i would suspect you have a bad micro usb port.
if you can connect, its not the port, and try taking an eraser and gently swabbing the contacts on the phone side.
also, make sure when you insert the battery there is an actual contact established. sometimes when pulling/pushing the battery in and out, those contacts sink further into the device and finally when you insert a batter the contact is very poor. you may need a tool or tweezer to just VERY, VERY GENTLY raise the contacts if they sunk in to far......but be careful not to pull too hard/much they can snap and you will probably void any warranty......

I am having the exact same problem. I have replaced the microUSB charging port on the phone and it still doesnt charge with the new port. I'm not sure what is going on. NEED HELP BIG TIME!!!
I'm having the same problem as well. It has been like that for bout a month or so now. I googled it and it seems to be a problem with the s3's and s4's. I'm not so worried about it as I have a spare battery charger and I have the wireless charging receiver on my s4 and it charges my phone just fine.
I had this exact problem I believe...tried several different chargers...everthing. Try turning the phone off and see if it takes a charge. When mine was off it would show a gray battery and vibrate every 5-10 seconds. I figured it was an issue with the charging/usb port but all of the sudden my phone started charging normally and is visible by a computer. Lasted for about 4 days and have been in the clear for about 3 days now. No clue what went wrong or why, but try what I mentioned above by charging with phone off for a half hour or so and see if it has charged at all. If you need a new USB port, not all GS4's have the same port, so you must get a verizon specific one (ebay). usually run about $20..or $65 installed at a phone fixing center. I didnt want to lose MDK, so I was prepared to just charge externally, but ended up not having to...yet
It happened to me also. I had some intermittent luck with blowing out the port with air from my air compressor. But in the end it just stopped working and Verizon sent me a refurbished one.
I Also have this problem!

Have you tried powering down your phone and seeing if that gray battery comes up and you get the vibrations (while plugged into charger)? You may need a new port, but since your under warranty, you could get a replacement unless you want to charge externally
S4 problem after update to 4.3
Hy,
I have a similar problem with my S4 (i9505), won't indicate if it is charging or connect to a computer, but while the charger is conected to S4, the battery level is increasing. When the battery is fully charged S4 is SHUTING DOWN!!!! And it wont start by pressing ON/OFF button, it will only start after I press Vol Down+Power, after goes to Download Mode and press Vol Down .
Tryed in many ways to fix:
- restore-
- hard reset
- changed te battery and charger
-i\ve changed even the usb port (flex cable) and =no results...
All problem started after update to 4.3.... and it is not an isolated case too many people complains about this 'awesome smartphone' with 'awesome issues' .
So, if anyone have any ideea how to solve this issues....
{Sorry for my bad english}
Had the same problem...lasted for about a day, I had to take a dry q-tip and clean the charger and the port where the phone charges and was able to get it working again. If you are rooted and are having issues go to amazon or ebay and get a wireless charger and it should take care of your problems as well

Ok....wireless charger...but what about syncing with the PC?
Now I have JB 4.3 , for a custom ROM I need to use usb cable to connect to PC, rigth?.
For me it is annoying, because I do not know for sure if this is caused by updatind to 4.3 or is a harware problem.
My wife's phone had this issue last night and this morning; charger or computer, it wouldn't charge. I turned it off, took out the battery, SIM and uSD card and put them all back in. After that it started charging again. I don't know if this will solve the problem long term, but so far it seems to have done the trick...

Lucky you...I did more than that, but no result in my case. I found on ''community.verizonwireless'' many more similar cases where ''customers support'' tried to avoid giving the answers for a real solution.
Well, our luck didn't hold. My wife's S4 wouldn't charge again last night. I tried another Samsung charger and a different cable but it wouldn't work either. When we left the house she tried it on the car charger and it worked great. Trying various other chargers we found that a kindle charger wouldn't work, but other third party chargers would. Even her PC USB port seems to work and she doesn't have the drivers loaded. For now she replaced the Samsung charger and cable that came with her phone for one that came as part of an accessory pack and it's happy again.
I have no idea what's going on with the thing. I asked one of the guys at the Samsung booth in Bestbuy and all he had to offer was reflashing the ROM or un-rooting it and doing a warranty exchange...

Can you check, please, if your new data cable has 4 or 5 pins(look to the side that connects to your phone )?
My first s4 done this. So I ended up with a replacement mdk phone after I figured out if you bend the lil piece in the charging port of your phone (not too much BTW) the charger will slide into the port as it's meant to.
Sorry I can't remember the tech term for that lil pin inside the charging port.

I think the S4 is compatible with QI compliant wireless chargers. Amazon has some that are only $20... might be worth the purchase.... hell if I didn't have this tank of a case on I would buy it.

Thanks for your answer, but I already did that....I even changed the flex cable with charging port, no luck for me.....
I think this issue it is not hw problem because, look what I did today:
-I put a new Rom , so I used MIUI FOR I9505 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306650
And now it behaves even stranger:
S4 is ON and wall charger is conected, (LED IT IS OFF but BATTERY IS BLINKING and is charging ) after battery level go up to 100% and disconect the charger, the LED STARTS TO LIGHT GREEN!!!!
So, now shows that is charging when charger is NOT connected?

My Xperia Z2 has problems with the USB connector, I know you have some reports of this, but I think I have not found any solution yet. He is almost 3 years old, I think it is normal to present problems, but I still do not want to change my cell phone.
I am having serious problems trying to connect it with the charger via usb, I have to wrap the cable around the device, pull to see if I find a way to connect it, when it connects and starts charging, after a while it starts to hurt Contact again.
When I bought the phone, I used a magnetic charger, but because it was not original cables, it went wrong and I decided to use it for the same cable. I saw that some problems occur because of connecting the magnetic to the opposite, but it has almost 2 years that I do not use and the cell phone always charged normally.
Any solution?
Hey,
I started to have the same issue until it stopped altogether. I had to disassemble my phone last week to fit a replacement LCD and digitizer, and noted that my USB connector had actually snapped off from the logic board!
~TL/DR~ The simple solution is to make use of the magnetic charger. You can get the official charging dock or cables. Both are cheap enough, easy to use and charge the device rapidly.
