Removing MicroSD when Flashing - HTC Startrek

Hi, can anyone explain to me why the MicroSD needs to be removed before flashing a ROM? I have flashed my phone at least 6 times in the past fortnight (got to love all these new ROMs ) and a couple of times I forgot to remove the MicroSD card. I have not noticed any ill effect, nor did it impact the flashing at all. From my experience it seems to be much ado about nothing. I'm curious to know where the recommendation has come from.
Mike

Hi Mike,
i can verify that flashing without removing SD Card causes problems on my T-Mob Ameo / HTC Athena. It seems that some devices cannot be flashed with inserted card. Didn't try to flash my smartflip yet, but i would still recommend to remove it (at least for unexperienced users).
Best regards

I have flashed my STRTRk about 5 times now, and left the SD card in. Never had any problems.

And I've flashed my Ameo many times with the card in with no problems.
What problems do you have when flashing with the card in? If they are easy enough to fix then I think the advice should be 'don't worry about it buit if you have problems then the first thing to try is to remove the memory card'
If, on the other hand, it totally screws your phone then maybe we should always remove the card just in case.

I've flashed my 3125 a few times with the microSD card in place, and didn't have problems. However, the last time I flashed, all of the data on my card was corrupted. I lost everything, including two months worth of detailed work notes.
I realize that it can be a pain to remove the microSD card from the StrTrk, but to me it's one minute well spent to keep from potentially frying my data.

Take out SD card when flashing? sim?

I forget where i saw it posted, but do people feel it makes any difference whether you flash a ROM with the sd card in, or the sim?
i tried flashing with all combinations and they all worked. But just to be on the safe side I try to remember to take both out when flashing.
my first few flashes i removed SIM and SD card, then i got lazy and just started flashing with them in. I've probably flashed 15 or more times with them both in and haven't run into any problems.

Same here lol
never took out either. nothing has ever happened.
I used to take them both out for every single flash.
Now I just take the SD card out so TomTom wont start installing if I left files on there by accident.
(also while I flash I clear out all the crap and pile of CABs I build up on there through a card reader)
SIM card stays in to autodetect if the rom wasnt optimized for ATT.

Ditto. No probs here.
I always flash from sd card, so not much choice
Does anyone know why this is discouraged to begin with? Do any chefs have any insight into this?

try using the forum's wonderful search function
Maybe its due to other models of phones that might format sd cards, memory cards or other storage mediums when being flashed. But seems here its all good for the Raph for now
I recall reading somewhere here that the only reason for removing sim was to prevent incoming calls from interrupting the flash process. Only reason to remove sd card was to prevent unwanted software installation.
No i BELEIVE DUE TO THE EARLY STAGES OF SPL MODIFICATION IN PREVIOUS PHONES SUCH AS THE HERMES, IN MY CASE THE 8125. tHIS WAS THE PROCEDURE WHEN FLASHING BACK IN THE DAY. This has not been the case for quite some time. sorry for caps but dont feel like editing on my phone.

With the UC (User Customization) support in ROMs now you need the SD card as it contains the customizations. I've flashed my phone more times than I can count and I have never removed either the sim or sd card.
I have NEVER removed sd or SIM whilst flashing, you literally CANNOT get interrupted during a flash process as your device is in SPL mode.
Leave them in, dont worry it will be fine.
There's at least one possible issue that you could run into flashing with an SD card in the slot, you might be booted up into winmo, start the flashing process, but have RAPHIMG.NBH or RAPHDIAG.NBH on your sd card, and the bootloader will stick there giving you a prompt to flash/boot that or continue..
that's stopped me in my tracks once or twice because I started flashing and didn't notice the prompt, so it didn't go anywhere and i had to start over.. but just a minor inconvenience

Freezing with new ROMS

I have freezing problems with the latest ROMS (NRGZ, Miri 4.0, 4.1 and even the Stock TMOUS 2.10)
Before installing anything just after syncing or even just going into menues phone hangs up. I tried hard resetting many times but no good.
Yesterday i went back to official Stock Rom (German) 1.66 and it worked flawlessly. Installed Miris today, and it hangs up all the time again.
I even tried using different Radios and the new TMOUS Stock ROM.
Someone told me it would be MTTY 29 related but i dont have Windows 64.
I got Windows 7 32 Bit.
Anyone encountering the same problem?
Could need some help here

You mean flashing without SD-card or booting?.
I`ll try both and reply. But what if so?
What Radio are you using? You have to use a TMOUS Radio for the new TMOUS ROM's
I had this
I also had this problem a while ago and didnt fancy doing format of device using
mtty thingy. So all i did was install official rom from htc then everything was fine again installing custom roms with no problems.
Sometimes particular micro sd cards have issues with particular roms. I remember once I couldn't boot until i removed sd card. And that rom was one of most popular and hundreds of people had no issues with it. The rom booted fine first time and then after first reset wouldn't boot. I tried flashing like 3 times, but no luck. I took another rom - everything works great.
Some people say you should format it again to fat32 default block size, but it didn't help me, I just flashed another rom and it worked fine. I have sandisk 8GB class 6 card.
So I guess if you remove your sd you would rule out possible (but otherwise very rare) issues with sd cards.
Wild guess actually

I used the Radios Miri recommended (2.07 and 2.08) and with TMOUS Stock the radio is already included as far as i know. But still had the probs.
BUT:
i just flashed and booted without SD card and it didnt freeze.
Put it in again and it freezes ... Maybe it really is the Card.
I got a 16gb Sandisk.
Kinda sucks ill try formatting SD Card and hope it solves the prob.
Any other ideas?

it certainly was the SD-card. I put in the original 2gb and no problems at all ...
There have also been a lot of problems with 16gb cards as well. A whole thread on it was determined that problems with Manila 1922 was from the 16gb cards.

Had similar issues. The trick for me was to keep out the sdcard and then set doc tab to read only local docs, so no email attachments. Then you can sync mail and put in the SDcard and all works fine .....
HTC HD2 Freezing
Just wanted all to know, HTC has recently acknowledged an issue with the 16GB SD card that shipped with the US T-Mobile HD2. T-Mobile issued an internal bulletin to this effect and provided a US number (888.356.2375) to call to arrange to have the SD card replaced, from Level 2 to a Level 4 SD card. Alot of HD2's had the Level 2 card installed and this card was found to cause the phone to freeze. The Level # is indicated by a circle with a numeral in the middle of it. Usually on the upper right hand side of the SD card. When you call the number HTC provided they will want you to have the HD2 in front of you with IMEI and S/N ready. The unique thing is HTC has rescinded their policy to send the 'bad' SD card back so if they send you a replacement Level 4 card you will end up with 2 SD cards. (I'm sure that Level 2 card could be reused somewhere) This info is probably even more useful to owners that have installed Android Froyo 2.2 on their HD2 as I have. The ROM's are usually contained on the SD card itself and not flashed internally. HTC does indicate a backorder on the replacement SD cards (up to 2 weeks or so) Hope this helps some of you with the freezing condition.

Mozart randomly reboots and asks to reset to factory settings

Hello,
My Mozart has been slaggish for a month or so now and I used to get freezes for like a minute. Then applications would refuse to start unless I tried like 3-4 times. As I was walking today I got the phone out of my pocket to check the time only to notice a message prompting me that I must reset to factory defaults as all my files are corupted. Done that and then the phone entered an endless reboot loop. Doing another hard-reset allows me to start configuring the phone again but it's a matter of time before it restarts on its own and prompts for a hard-reset. This is an Orange UK phone and I havent seen any ROMS to flash and see if that resolves the issue. I was about to dish out £500 for the Samsung Omnia 7 but it turns out the device has similar issues and so is the HD7. Anyone knows if this is easy to fix? I feel terrible for giving my HD2 away so I guess I am going for an iPhone 4 instead.
Sounds like an issue with SD Card, could be corrupted. Your best option would be to send it back for repair as faulty or if you are adventurous (and don't need your warranty) you can attempt to replace the SD Card yourself.
I have accessed the SD on my Mozart and it isn't that difficult, it just requires the correct tools and patience.

I replaced the card and the phone works. Seems to be a bit slowish though. Must be the write speed of the card
Awesome, I'm glad that worked.
Just out of curiosity, what card did you replace it with?

[HELP] Not working external Micro SD card reader from atrix....

My micro SD card reader doesn't work at all not even recognize my MICRO SD card and none of them i have tried 4 micro sd card, from normal sd card to sdHC.. I have been using Gingerblur and the external SD card was not working properly then I flash back to 4.1.83 to get my Bootloader Unlock so in 4.1.83 the External SD card was not working at all.... I have tried a lot of memories, I tested them in a pc micro sd card reader and all was working properly in the PC but my atrix don't recognize any micro SD card that i put in... So now Im in recovery mode and i Need the E: Disk to flash a zip file for navalynt's mode I dont know what to do!
Exchange it. Had the same issue, only fix.
I've had this happen on my MyTouch 4g and my old G1. I think at some point rooting ends up corrupting the cards. I don't think this is an atrix problem. The only thing that worked for me was wiping and formatting the memory card again. Because it works in the computer you just make a backup. As far as being in recovery you just need to boot out of it that's not a big deal.
There is a known issue with the contacts in the sdcard slot in the Atrix. There is a fix which involves bending a pin slightly, but I would return the phone for exchange/repair rather than risk messing it up yourself. I would think this is your likely problem. You could try moving the sdcard around in the slot and putting a wee bit of pressure on it to see if it suddenly shows on your phone. This could possibly verify that the slot is the problem.

Maybe it is because the problem started strongly since I flash Gingerblur and when I flashed back to 4.1.83 and unlock the bootloader I noticed that it hasn´t been working when I was trying to see CWM 4 to flash Gingerblur again, im going to reformat my SD card but I think that this maybe it is not going to fix my problem.

Could you give intructions or a link to try to fix it, because the seller could refund me a portion of the money paid to fix it or I can return it because i already bought another one new but REFURBISHED, this phones have a lots of issues, wifi, fingerprint, etc... My samsung captivate never gave me such problems...
I took the sd card then put it again with pressure and without pressure, i tried but in anyway I have tried no respond was given from the atrix.. so it is not recognized at all...

before you guys go and return any phone unnecessarily, please swap out for another SD card as it may simply be that the SD card became corrupt with flashing a new ROM (as does happen), there is absolutely no reason to assume it is a hardware issue until you have attempted another SD card first, if another SD card does not work then yes get Motorola to fix it, otherwise, you will need a card reader to format your SD card to fat32 iirc

buy a class6 or higher sd card and your issue will be solved.
As I said in my other post:
Sounds like you need a new SD card. Some of the stock cards don't play well with MTD based ROMs. I think it's a speed issue, and MTD based roms assume cards are at least a certain speed. I would probably get a Class 10 microSD card (be careful if you get 32gb, there are known problems with some of them)
I bought http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-microSDHC-Class-Memory-Adapter/dp/B0058GH4U0/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1335980268&sr=8-12 and have had no problems at all after!
thanks everyone for replying...i might have to just upgrade to a different card and see if that will solve the problem.

every since switching to a class 10 card, i have had no mounting issues or sd card damage errors since. my device also seems to be more tolerant of dirty flashing, before i had to always wipe data...also the phone seems faster loading apps, pictures etc.
