EVDO Roaming is back! - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

Flashed the new ROM and this is awesome! DCD made a kitchen, the GPS works super fast!, no RevA here but I'm hitting 1.8 megabits on downloads with WMWifiRouter, and the best of all when I set the phone to Roaming Only it switches over to 1X then a few seconds later it picks up EvDO on Alltel. Sweet! Haven't seen this since the 1.40 Radio.
Giving it run tomorrow and see if the internet connection keeps falling on its face every couple of hours which forces me to cycle the radio in the phone to fix it. Here's hoping the battery lives more than 10 hours.

How can you tell if you're picking up another company's EvDO?

When you force Roaming you see the Ev icon at the top. Or you can always look at the ##DEBUG# screen and see that it is on CDMA Cellular instead of PCS, which is where Alltel is in my area.

There is 1X from sprint here and EV from verizon. Will it automatically roam, or do I have to force it to roam (I havent got a chance to update yet).

No, there isn't an EVDO roaming agreement between Verizon and Sprint.

i still can't get mine to force EVDO only... its pissing me right off cuz where i live i only get Sprint 1x at like 40-60kb/x which sucks for everything basically
i use to be able to force evdo with the mode of operation tab in phone settings, but as soon as i turn that on, the HDR signal i was getting in field trial is gone and everything is set to N/A
any ideas?

evdo switching to 1x

I'm not sure if this happens on verizons rom or not because i always flash all my xv6800s to DCDs newest rom and im using the newest radio and the newest bootloader and also i built the kitchen with the verizon cab and mms cab built in as oems and mms, phone calls, gps, internet, data connections, and everything works perfect except one thing
I noticed that my phone switches to 1x whenever i make a call even if i set the phone to use evdo only and i know i have a good enough evdo signal because other phones stay on evdo fine and my laptops have mini-pcie EVDO rev a cards and they are set to EVDO only and they work fine
probally doesnt matter but my laptops all have mini-pcie novatel EVDO Rev-a cards on sprint and my cell phones use verizon and they all stay on evdo fine and the xv6800s stays on EVDO during data connections its just whenever i make a call or send/recieve sms messages it switches to 1x
That's completely normal. Voice is always handled by the 1xRTT (1X) network. EvDO only handles the data component. Nothing wrong with what you're seeing.
The Telecom New Zealand phones are the same where Telecom's WM5 seem to use EvDO alright but with all the new ROMs data always revert back to 1X
I think you need to do some reading on CDMA technology and how it works.
1xRTT = Voice/SMS
EVDO Rev 0/A = Data/MMS
It's always been like that, always will (until LTE is rolled out).
I mean, it's right in the name for pete's sake....EVDO...Evolution DATA ONLY.

IU have the same problem, I have sent it in to telecoms repair agent and have told them the evdo isn't working, I am waiting to find out what the will do when they find my phone has wm 6.1 on it.
If you get no joy out of telecom the WM5 ROM has been uploaded to PPCGEEKS but you will also need to rollback you Radio as that file doesn't have the radio only the ROM

Understood but EVDO will alway revert back to 1X if it can not get a steady connection, that appears to be what is happening. I'm talking about Data connections (I am only speaking about myself)

[Q] CM9 3g roam speeds?

I see that you can now, in CM9, force roaming but i only seem to get 1x speeds. I'm not sure if thats just because im in a low coverage area for verizon? I saw screenshots Joker posted of him getting 1mb+ on verizons network with CM9. Anyone know if he was running a new PRL or if it was just CM9 that allowed this? Huge thanks to Joker and all involved with their amazing work with the Photon and CM9!
Could be area and how close to the connected tower. Wish I could remember the Web page but you could with the connection info see the tower you were connected to look at the maps and see how far it was from you..
I used to do this all the time with my old VZW air card.. It was interesting because you may be a closer antennae or tower but the device would insist on the further of the two. The cool thing was being able to try forcing it to one over the other..
Not sure about cm9 but there has to be a way to bring up the connection info.. DBm, tower number, etc.. Could be some pound code to access it?
This is a standard function of CM. I haven't yet tried the CM9 alphas, but on my evo I was using CM7 and put my network onto automatic all the time at work so I could pick up a decent VZW signale, instead of my crap Sprint one in the building. Sometimes I would get great speeds, sometimes not.
I ended up just flashing a Sprint "business" PRL that allows 3g roaming onto Verizon, they *supposedly* only allow 1x roaming for normal users. I tried putting network to auto on CM7 on my Photon and it didnt do anything, however since ive flashed to CM9 on Photon it switches right over to Verizon's tower and i now, due to the new PRL, jump right to 3g Verizon(where there is 3g, obviously) And to tell what cell tower i'm on, I use an app called "OpenSignal" its in the market for free and has done well for me for a while now.
Cool thanks for sharing will have to checkout OpenSignal.

How did you flash the prl? I was on 11115 then flashed to cm7 which gave me the 51083 prl. I can't seem to get cm7 into the right mode to flash the prl. All the posts on the web are for the evo. And those folks have to go back to stock to change the prl. I am stuck with the 1x roaming as well.
This tool allows me to force roam on cm7 but I believe that my prl is limiting me to 1x.

You can roam on 3g with the regular prls.

I ended up restoring(via nandroid backup) to a stock blur rom from right after i unlocked/rooted my device and was able to follow THIS guide to get the PRL 01115 to flash to my Photon. Once i flashed PRL i just restored(again via nandroid) back to my CM9 backup. You will need your MSL, if you dont have it just call Sprint and tell them you need to do a data profile reset and need the 6 digit code and they give it out no questions as long as you play dumb and don't call it the MSL. And thanks for reply Joker! But i was out other day with some buddies(who are on verizon) and they were getting good 3g verizon speeds and i forced to roam on verizon and couldn't get over like 16k down(this was before i flashed new PRL). And in Settings - About Phone - Status it showed i was on 1x roaming, even though we were in a great 3g zone for verizon. Idk if that was a fluke or what but now that im on this 0115 business PRL i see flying speeds when force roaming. Cant thank you enough for all the amazing work you've done!
So do a nandroid back to stock and then nandroid back to cm7/9? Where is the prl info located that it would not change with a nandroid restore? I'm going to give of a shot and see how it goes.

It worked!
My stock nandroid would not flash (Error while flashing boot image!) so I wiped and flashed Jokerstockrev1 (nice ROM BTW) in CWM. This enabled me to enter BP tools mode and flash PRL 11115 using QPST. I nandroid'ed back to my CM7 backup and I now get 3g roaming! Not that I need this right now since I am in a Sprint saturated area, but having the option is nice when I travel to remote areas.

Phone will not data roam majority of the time

Anyone know or have similar problems? I have PRL 12121 (and have even tried it w/ the current PRL by using the Update PRL option) and if I force roam on my phone, data refuses to connect on a majority of Verizon towers. The tower nearest my house, I can connect 3G roaming, and a few towers here and there, but majority I cannot connect what-so-ever. Any ideas on this? I have even reverted back to a stock rom on an older radio firmware to see if it'd solve the problem, but nothing.. I am able to make phone calls the entire time, just not data. I've also done a profile reset, and had Sprint reset on their side as well, and still no go.
Those hacked prl's are known to only work on some towers. I've found that different prls will work better with different roms. Just try a few more out.

I can force update to my regular issued PRL (21090) and have the same issue, so doesn't appear to be due to a hacked PRL. Sprint Tech Support is useless over the problem. I am running ZR3D-XL.. I've even gone as far as to go back to a standard STOCK ROM (while backing up my current install) to make sure there wasn't something weird going on. I'm just baffled over the whole ordeal.
Ok, so I've completed my investigations of my data problems while roaming (I'm in Austin, TX)...
When I select force roaming in various locations in my home market, I have determined that when my phone tries to connect to Cricket instead of Verizon, then it goes crazy. I just did a force roam, got full service roaming and 3G, I dialed *228 (PRL Programming, and of course it fails because I'm not using that carrier) to see which service answered, and Verizon was the carrier.. A few seconds later, my phone changed over from full service to having only 1 bar, and data connection dropped and giving the error saying it couldn't connect to the mobile network. Dialed *228 again, and this time, Cricket was the provider. A few minutes later, full service again, and *228 revealed it was Verizon. So, I've come to the conclusion that for whatever reason, Cricket is not allowing Sprint to roam on their own serviced towers, although they are supposed to have roaming agreements in place.
Anytime my phone connects to Verizon, whenever I force roam it to, the signal strength is excellent and I get 3G Roaming, but Cricket, even with the lower signal strength, still comes and takes over my phone and forces my data connection to die. I have even tried (as mentioned in a previous post) to use the official sprint PRL that is valid on my phone right now, even with 1X, and I have the same problem.
I've been doing this testing for several days now all over my market, and it's the same everywhere I've "roamed". It's annoying. Guess I need to go back and get a PRL prior to 2010 to see if I still have this issue, but of course, I would be missing out on all the updated agreements.
Anyone have any thoughts on this or how to NOT roam onto Cricket?

tmobile lte issues or phone issues

For the past week I've been having problems with my phone seeming locked in "wcdma preferred" mode despite it being actually set to lte/cdma in Phone Info menu. I'm in San Francisco and my daily commute path is completely blanketed with lte, and I have never had any problems connecting to lte until this past week. Usually as soon as I arrive in SF on the train, my phone immediately connects to and stays connected to lte. But at around the time tmobile rolled out their new plans (March 25ish?), my phone has been connecting to hspa 4g and remains on hspa until I force a lte connection by going into phone info menu (*#*#7696#*#*) and choosing lte only. This is particularly irksome because the 4g signal is only 2-3 bars while the lte signal is a full 5 bars. For whatever reason, my phone is clinging onto the hspa connection and passes my signal from tower to tower without actually passing it up to a lte tower. Once I force a lte connection, my phone will remain on lte and will pass back and forth between lte towers as it did before.
Anyone else notice this happenning recently?

Try setting it to gsm/wcdma/lte auto under settings -> mobile data -> network mode.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
The gsm/cdma/lte auto setting is the default setting the phone shipped with, and changing it back to this didn't solve the problem. I use lte/cdma because I wanted to eliminate edge bands altogether since data is practically unusable when connected to edge, and the phone has an annoying tendency to fall back onto edge prematurely.
During the times affected, the phone seems to be locked onto the "wcdma only" setting, regardless of what was actually being selected.
I called tmo a few times and the issue seems to be resolved now. I'm certain it was an issue on their end, probably some software provisioning problem that came up when the new rates rolled out. For what it's worth I am on the now grandfathered $20 unlimited data plan.

I'm still trying to understand what T-Mobile was thinking when they changed their plans. Way to keep themselves super competitive.

[Q] 4G/3G Connectivity and Speed Issues

I'm at my wits end and am hoping someone could have an answer for my problem. My home's in the L.A./O.C. area and the local towers were recently upgraded. This has made my phone use ERHPD (I believe that the upgrade is only a software overlay) since 4G was not upgraded. Basically I'm in a 3G/1x speed zone. I'm stock 4.4.2 and towel rooted with roam control. If I go out into the street and force roam to Verizon's network, I'll get 4 to 6gb download speed. On Sprints network, I'm stuck on 3G with 0.20 dl speed. When I force to Verizon's network, (goes to 4G) and then switch back to Sprint, my Sprint speed will be on 4g (with 1/2 the dl speed of Verizon). I tested both networks by streaming a movie and no buffering with Verizon and just a little buffering while on Sprint 4g. Once I walk into the house my phone drops to 3g again and 50% of the time will time out when trying to speed test or Google anything. Go out into the street get slow 3g. Force roan to Verizon and back to 4g. Once on Verizon 4g I can turn off roam and Sprint will be at 4g then (but a slower speed than Verizon). This is an improvement over the consumer prl that was on the phone originally. I'm using 2 different corp. prls for sprint which allows me to get the above stated speeds. Consumer prl sucked big time. I'm wondering if flashing a Verizon radio to my N3 would allow me to pick up the 4g signal that Verizon phones are getting good speed with and or change over to a Verizon prl?
Another test/example done today while in the San Bernardino mountains.
Standing next to my neighbor who has Verizon NOTE3 and is getting 4g. Speed test showing 4mb upload. My Sprint Note3 download speed 0.13. Tried it with 2 corp. and 1 stock prl.
Is this a junky radio on SPRINT or do I need to use a custom Verizon PRL to get and maintain 4G on my Sprint Note 3? Could the speed connectivity issue be solved with a radio change? Maybe a Verizon radio?
Any help/direction is greatly appreciated,
I know speed and connectivity are a big issue with Sprint in a lot of areas right now and maybe the answers will be able to help the dozens of people I've seen looking for answers.

You could try and change the radio to Verizon, but I think that would conflict with the Sprint version of the OS you have in the device. Then what happens when you are in an area that the roles are reversed, and Sprint has the dominant tower ? Do you have a different internet connection in the house that you can pull WiFi from ? A friend of mine had a similar problem the house was a dead zone. So she complained to Sprint and they gave her a router that produces a WiFi signal for internet and provides a signal for phone calls for her old Sprint EVO 4G. This way she never has to manually have to switch her device connections when leaving home for work. Don't know if this will help in your case, but might be worth a try.

Sprint gave me an Air Wave which I use at my work since it's in a dead zone also and I need cell signal to do my job.
Because I have one already, Sprint won't give me another one for use at my house. There's no internet or wifi at the mountain cabin. Only signal available there is cell if you're on the right provider. Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking of flashing to a Verizon radio when I go to the mountains and re-flash it back to Sprint after I return. I'd have to do this every weekend and am not sure if it would get me kicked off of Sprint for roaming to much on Verizon. I'm also unsure if flashing the radio would actually give me good Verizon signals, and unsure if Sprint could be able to tell if I was using a different radio.
Update,
After researching some more I tried going to airplane mode for 30 seconds and back. This has my phone connecting to 4g when outside the house. Once I walk inside the signal fades and it goes to 3g in the house. Not needing to roam on Verizon to make it go into 4g. 3g data is only .03mb in the house when I can get the speed test to connect. Still no useable data speed in the mountains.
