You are right Brother! Where ever I go, people keep wandering wat huge phone I was using but when they saw how wonderful to have large screen view they were amaze and was asking where I got it cos you can never fine any even on the auction or ebay.
I too had iphone before switching to Athena. Iphone cant do the very basic thing i need is my office files and the pdf files. Syncrionizing my office mail is a breeze which I only read on my train ride home.
No matters how , my Athena will be the last phone cum pda cum camera cum ipod cum video player that i will ever have.
It aint heavy, its my buddy!!!!!
I second you on that guys.....Been changing device and finally found this phone and so far really fulfill my needs....The big screen is just amazzziiingggg............Not to mention the power we had in this advantage....
Ditto, ditto, ditto. I've had mine 15 months now and I don't see anything, even "coming soon", that will be able to replace it.
I, too, still get "what is that" when I pull it out in public. A few months ago I was at the AT&T store due to a problem with my wife's phone and when I pulled my phone out every employee gathered around to stare and ask questions. I'd say its pretty hard to impress a cell phone store employee - and the Athena does it.
yup the reason i posted
every where u turn everyone has now an iphone. and they think they are the sh!!!. i know some of us have seen it. but as soon as i pull out my x7500 i get questions like what is it. no matter where i go i always get asked that and sometimes not to be rude i just say "me no speak ingles". the only draw back its not a phone where everyone in ur block has. it sometimes can get u detained like last week i went here in chicago to a federal building and the security guard pulled me aside after i put everthing on the tray to go thru the metal detector and kept asking what it was i showed the moronsky for 5 minutes and he said it wasnt so i had to make a call from it just to show him.
i think it was cell phone discrimination ;-).
i
yup
I like my 7501 too.
I have an input though, if only we could get our advantage that 10000% works in VGA with full compability and free of bugs. That'll be awesome.........

I've got a Touch HD because it's more portable but I still use my athena for reading (which I do a lot) and office tasks. After the huge screen of the athena, any other device is a let-down, screenwise. (sighs)
I've got spare batteries for both devices and usually end up with both, but using the athena more. I can't get myself to get rid of it!
permanent!
It's true...
Which other device can sit on my desk, on my monitor stand, not take up any space, allow me to stay connected to Face book through app - msn with voice and instant pic send and also stay connected to my home PC through logmein all day
I connect to an RDP on one of our servers here and I have mouse + keyboard plugged in via USB - I dont even need a PC on my desk to work!
- and still be able to read it from more than 15 CM away.....
then let me take aGSM call when it comes in?
Then let me plug in USB gamepad and play SNES GBA? etc...
I have samsung Omnia HD as my main phone but, if I take a bag with me, Ameo comes along!
yarod, have you tried My Mobiler (www.mymobiler.com)? My Athena sits on my desk all day, too, and this app makes a 2nd mouse and keyboard unnecessary. Puts the Athena desktop right on your desktop monitor, and passes your mouse/keyboard through to the phone. Or, you can set it up so the Athena becomes an extended desktop space for your desktop, but I haven't found a good use for that yet.
I love this app.

That part there is NOT correct. It is VERY useful.
Ciao!
again im a proud owner of the athena
every where i go in chicago i have yet to see another x7500. theres a lot of iphones out there and othet phones but im the only one with a nice viewable screen and lately alot of of people have those little cheap laptops with the 8 inch screen so all i do is sit next to them and pull out my athena with keyboard and all and all they do is stare. it still gets alot of attention
Ive had a htc touch and omnia since i got my Ameo but I still use the Ameo its still the preverable K9's testicales. Though I do love the Omnia, I take it every where as its slightly more portable. and very very stable. but it aint got a 5" screen. I pull that out and always everyone asks whats that.
Currently I have a Storm that has a defective screen. Verizon has sent me the trifecta of consecutive defective phones. They now asked me to find another phone. I was told any phone but the Blackberry Tour. Prior to the Storm I had a 6800 with VZW. However, after multiple issues I had to give it up.
Things I miss now on the Storm is App selection, physical keyboard and WIFI at Times. I guess most important is customization. I flashed many roms on my 6800 to open the GPS, speed it up and allow for tethering. Here are my questions I have and feel free to offer your thoughts.
1. Is the Touch Pro just as easy to flash?
2. Does the TP gain functionality like open GPS when flash?
3. Does flashing allow for undetectable tethering?(I have a itouch that I want to use with it via wmwifirouter.
4. How is battery life?
5. How good is the quality of the phone?
6. Your thoughts?
Thanks for the input.
I don't hate verizion... they just suck.
If I were you I wouldn't get the touch pro through verizion. They slowed down the processor, took away some of the memory, took away the ability for 3rd party GPS*, took away youtube and all streaming media capability and 3 rows of the keyboard. So even if you flashed the bejesus out of it, it would still have three strikes against it in my book. That and the fact that you pay the same price as the one at sprint and you don't get the memory card, headset, and if memory serves the screen protecters. Verizions touch pro is at approx. 70% memory usage just because it has the touch flow interface on, while sprints remain at about 32% under the same conditions.
*I think there was some lawsuit about the GPS bit, but i don't remember the outcome of that.
Sorry that i can't answer any of your other questions but i felt that you needed to know. So... Yeah, don't get the touch pro through verizion.

Exactly. If you're gung-ho (or on contract) about VZW, I'd wait on their version of the TP2. I believe it's a world phone, which the original TP is not, and not only is it uncrippled I believe, it also offers a 3.5mm headphone jack which other versions may still be using the extUSB connection only.

I will answer your questions one by one...
1. Is the Touch Pro just as easy to flash?
Ans: I do not know about the 6800, but the process is rather simple.
2. Does the TP gain functionality like open GPS when flash?
Ans: I do not see why it shouldn't. If the GPS is there and it only has a software lock, then erasing all of the software should take care of the problem.
3. Does flashing allow for undetectable tethering?(I have a itouch that I want to use with it via wmwifirouter.
Ans: They will always see the data usage on your plan. So, if they see large amounts of data being used by your account, they might end up assuming that you are tethering. Other than that, I don't think they can detect it (I could be dead wrong though).
4. How is battery life?
Ans: If it is anything like Sprint's TP, it sucks badly. Having said that, different roms use resources in different ways (normally far more efficiently than stock roms), so depending on the rom that you decide to flash, it is bound to get better.
5. How good is the quality of the phone?
Ans: It really depends on the network. The In-Call volume can be (and should be) tweaked by a small fix called "Audio Boost". If you do not use this, I can guarantee you that you will not be able to hear the person on the other side. Call quality in general is not too bad though...
6. Your thoughts?
Ans: I have not seen it in Verizon TP, but the Sprint TP develops something called "Newton Rings" on the screen. Basically, this is a rainbow looking rectangle in the middle of your screen (think of an oil slick). This is an issue that can render the touchscreen useless. This happens simply because the phone gets so damned hot when you use it for anything (GPS, Internet, calls, etc) that the screen gets warped and starts coming out of the phone. Your provider (and even HTC) will say that this happens due to applying too much pressure on the screen, which is BS. If you look this up in PPCGeeks you will see a rather long thread about this same exact issue.
All in all, I would not go for it. You could do what level5music is suggesting and wait for the TP2. Who knows? It could be better or just as ****ty
Hope this helps...
I had the touch pro and switched to the storm...then i switched back to the touch pro. Trust me, the touch pro is worlds better. You will come to hate the blackberry os, as i have. I thought windows mobile was bad...then I flashed to wm 6.5 yesterday after never doing it before. Its way easier to flash with xp in my opinion as I could not get it to work on vista, it always said it disconnected, but maybe its just my machine. But yes, you should get the storm, you wont get push email, but you get a KEYBOARD!
i love windows mobile but i wouldnt trade a storm for a verizon touch pro. it blows period. verizon took a great device and criples it to no better than a vga mogul, crippled cpu (note, the touch pro has enough perfomance issues already so this is worse) no g-sensor, funky keyboard with a misplaced "m" letter key, half the ram and crippled gps. i you want a touch pro, id get a sprint one and flash to verizon, otherwise the bb storm is the better choice imo
wait for the pro 2
Verizon has gimped the touch pro as far as RAM goes. (half of what other providers sell)
The problem with custom roms is that most of them will be set for pagepool designed for more ram.
There has been a new ROM released by verizon that unlocks the built in GPS. This is a good sign. I know people here are saying wait for a touch pro 2, but since verizon wouldn't allow you to get a tour i doubt they will allow a TP2.
I used a sprint version until recently and i got my palm pre to work on verizon
I've used a curve before too. I always miss my TP, even with my palm pre (not nearly enough apps yet)
If you have no choice and need a new device, verizons current offerings are weak, Id go with the TP.
The verizon keyboard is also messed up... the put the "up" key in between n and m keys.

i'm sorry that two words out of my entire rant were wrong. my apoligies.
Save yourself the headache - i have a TP and hate it.
Been using the TP now for about 3 months. I absolutely hate this phone. There were all kinds of bugs in the stock rom, and I still haven't been able to find a ROM where everything just works. The phone is slow, buggy, and the screen really sucks. IMO.
I am currently debating the switch to Tmobile to get an android handset or the iPhone. I have always carried WinMo phones, but I just can't take the grief this one is giving me.
It looks like I am not the only one that has given the same advice. Avoid the TP at all costs unless you can get one for free.
Verizon sucks...but still a great phone.
To be honest HTC & Microsoft are the way of the future. I have a Touch Pro and my wife has a Touch Pro. We both love them sure it has its issues but what phone doesn't?? Before we got the Touch Pro, we both had Moguls and loved those and can't wait to upgrade to the Touch Pro2. I would try to wait for the Touch Pro2 if I were you and I would definitly run and hide from any Blackberry, Palm or Apple phone.
not many people have a problem with the touch pro itself, but the you are missing out on so much if you get the verizion version.
I agree with the others.
I have the TP for Sprint (using JD's latest beta ROM) and love it!!! With saying that..... there are a few things that need to be improved..... with the battery being the main one.
All in all the device is really easy to flash and to maintain, and so far it has served me well........ but my next phone will be an Android phone....... as soon as Sprint gets Android....
First of all, I will start by mentioning that this is my third Touch Pro from Sprint and I just want to confirm something before I take back to the store.
Is there anyone else who updated to the newest official firmware and have problems with your video playback from your albums. I had some videos stored from my old phone on a sd, and when I try to play it on this phone, it would cause a lot of jagging, freezes, audio playing while video is not. I then recorded a video with the camcorder and when I went to play back, it did the same thing. The settings I have it in is in
-CIF 352x288
-MPEG4
If its the phone, then I'm glad because I can go get myself the Touch Pro 2 at the store for free.
Things to note,
-had no problem like this on the 2nd phone
-upgraded the firmware as soon as I got home with this phone
-been like this for a while, just never cared to get an answer until now
Any feedback to a similar problem or non-exsisting problem would be greatly appreciated.
Look, if your ultimate goal is to get a free TP2, then just tell them that the phone gets unholy hot or some defect from the phone itself (battery lasting less than half a day with moderate use, etc). Believe me that the TP from Sprint has a bunch of those... If you start going by software, believe me that they will find a way to either fix it or convince you that it can be fixed with an update...
were you getting a free tp2 due to these issues?? Because im having the same issues as well including that my battery gets extremely hot and will not charge

I'm curious about this myself. I was gonna get a Hero in a couple of months when my contract is up, but if I get a TP2, I might hold out for a little while.
There is a list somewhere that after a certain date, if your phone is with in the manufacture warranty of 1 year, and you have insurance of both types with sprint, you can switch out the phone to a list of 10 other phones, the TP2 and the hero being among those.
Still a sure answer on this would be great. Thanks egz on some insight. And gxt, you mean you are having problems with video playback too?
So I think I'll be going to the sprint store tomorrow, I'll let you guys know how it goes, unless I don't go that is.

What insurance do you have to have? Where is this list?
My 2nd tp just crapped out on me and insurance just sent me a "new" one.

http://slumz.boxden.com/f244/sprint-now-replacing-touch-pro-touch-pro-2-a-1295800/
im going to give this a shot.
Hello everybody(insert simpsons joke here), it looks like i finally went to the sprint store. After what seems like a lifetime ago, i told them the problems I had, they said they would do a hard reset, and to come back in an hour. An hour and a half later and I will be getting mnyself a touch pro 2 soon. Now the only bad part is that i need to call this store to find out when they would have any touch pro 2's in their warehouses. So at least for now, I am assed out, oh and forgive me if this comes off as bad grammer, I am typing this from my touch pro 1, the screen is too small.
I saw this at the http://www.alk.com store. They're selling copilot Live 8 with maps for $19.99. limited time of course. I got my copy.
What do you think? I'm considering it since it's only $20. Not thrilled with amAze or nav4all, both free. I like google maps but it's not voice navigation.
I watched this review and it looks pretty good. Can't beat 20 bucks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3sI0iu1OQk
Bought and used this weekend just for short trips around town. Handy and worked okay but not a replacement for my Garmin.
$20 seemed too cheap to pass up.
Used it this morning. Works great. Kiss AT&T telenav good bye!
Think they're trying to get users hooked before someone converts 'Google Maps with Voice naviagtion' to WM for free!!!

lol damn, saw this too late... It's $24.99 now...
i jumped on this deal too. if you download the pc app for it they even offer a new map for free. the new map is outdated though. both maps do not have my neighborhood on them. my neighborhood is about 2 years old and just started showing on maps within the last year. ocn had it mapped last summer and it showed on both google and tomtom this summer. i'm pretty surprised that it's not on the new map.
I used to use co-pilot but gave up because I called them way too many times to reset my "keys". It was hard to explain to them that I flashed my "custom" rom like I changed underwears. The lady there would questioned me why I have so much problem. I guess they think I am installing it in various phones of mine. So I switched to IGO8 to get away from having to call them when I flash another custom rom.
I used to sent in logs of areas that I droved that are not in their maps...and they would update their maps.
As far as their GPS, it is pretty good.

Hi SL...I also have it..do not need to call....all you need to do is to de-activate CoPilot before you flash and the re-activate when done. I hope this helps anyone.
Thanks for the tip! I bought it & installed, but wondered if there would be issues next time I decided to flash...
now with deactivate button
I went for the deal. So far I like it, but haven't used it enough to make an informed judgement. (as well as its my first tbt nav app). I did want to say to SL thatCopilot Live 8 has a deactivate button in the app now so there is no need to call support if you load a new ROM .....as long as you remember to deactivate it first.
I bought it over the 'sale' weekend, and have flashed twice since then without de-activating it. I don't use the 2577 folder install method, I use Sashimi to copy the entire \Program Files\CoPilot directory structure from a backup location. The first time I run it it needs to re-activate, but it only takes a couple seconds.
Can anyone confirm the necessity of de-activating before flashing?
I did it also.
So far soo good ! .
I used to have the old IPAQ Nav program moved over from my old IPaq 6515 to my previous HTC diamond. It worked well , but the graphic was basic.
Since to weeks I have the Samsung Omnia 2 (Bell Canada)and the new CoPilot seems to run very nice (at least graphic wise) and I find it preety easy to use.
Anyway for 20 bucks was a great value !
Works much better then Google maps. The Copilot maps don't have my Street either, my development is about 2 years old. Very good user interface.
Ironically enough , close to my house they made a link between two streets a year ago , and I see it on Copilot , but not on Google maps on-line !
Go figure..
I'm tired of the GPS not working accurately on my vibrant. People seem to forget what's the true reason to use a mobile phone in the first place. Who really needs a faster processor and sharper resolution when you can't use it for something as basic as navigation and finding the number and address of your local grocery store?
This is why I have switched to a Garminfone. I do not have to pay for a data plan. Who really surfs the net on a tiny screen? that's what laptops and tablets are for. Can anyone here say their Vibrant GPS works just as accurately as a Garmin device? I want to know if it's because I have an older Vibrant model. Have the new Vibrants fixed the GPS issue completely? My Garminfone is accurate in locating me within 2-10 meters and can find me in 2-3 seconds! Plus it was made to integrate directly with your car, so there is a windshield holder with power outlet.
No real software can truly fix the GPS since it's a hardware limitation. Probably why my Garminfone is heavier. It uses a real GPS, not aGPS! And it's made by Asus which is an excellent brand!
No flaming intended, but HOLY CRAP a Garminfone?
Ouch dude.
You picked a GARMINFONE over an SGS? The ONLY thing that phone does better is GPS.
That being said, the GPS on my Vibrant works great. I have no idea why some Vibrants can't see a bird to save their lives, and some work. Supposedly the newer hardware makes it more likely that it will work.
Good luck with your new GPS that can make phone calls.
LOL at picking a Garminfone over the Vibrant.

Weird... I thought the true reason to use a mobile phone.... was to call people??
I thought about the Garminfone briefly before I settled with a Vibrant.
Software updates for the Garminfone are really non-existent and any modding/hacking Roms is almost extinct as well. The device is on life support at best.
That being said I've seen Vibrants with superb 5 second GPS locks by just spending 10 patient minutes doing the GPS hardware fix listed in the sticky.

True. There is a hardware issue with the GPS as stated in the sticky in the General Section. But once that issue is corrected the GPS is just as good as any standalone device I've every used. There are about 90 other people who will back me on that too. Oh and my phones GPS is set to Standalone, no aGPS here...
those that are replying, keep in mind....
does you GPS work properly without a Data plan???
my point is, if you're paying an extra $30 a month which is $330 a year for data when there is wifi in just about every mall, mc donalds, star bucks...why even bother?
and on top of that, why pay for data if you already have wifi at home and in the workplace??
Seriously, no one truly browses a full web page on a phone. You do that on a laptop or tablet. The Garminfone has android 2.1. So what is if it doesn't have 2.3? The issue is always going to be T-mobile will be a few builds behind the latest one. Are you really going to save the world with 2.3???
It's all about functionality and value!!!!
I can be in the middle of nowhere and get GPS directions, address and telephone numbers without a data plan! No paying $330 yearly!
So back to my question, does your GPS on your Vibrant work accurately without a data plan or wifi?
omg is this thread for real. me and my wife had a garmin when they first came out cause of the buy one get one deal. we couldnt give those crappy phones back fast enough. really garmin phone why dont you just get a tom tom duct tape it to your vibrant if you want gps so bad.
I looked at the Garminfone for about 10 minutes. I am not going to bash your choice because everyone has different needs for their devices. I will however say that my decision to NOT go with that phone was I read a ton of bad reviews on overall hardware and software issues. Plus I really hardly use GPS unless I am bored.
If you truly need GPS and just use a phone to call and text then that is what suits you best.
Good luck with your purchase, come back in a few weeks and prove us wrong I guess
After reading through this post, I don't why the OP even created this post in the first place when he knows for a fact that our phone requires a data plan for GPS to work. As for me, I am out most of the time and it's just much more convenient for me to use the data plan to go online and email without having to look for a place with wifi. On top of that, my replacement phone sees 11 to 12 birds and locks on to 6 to 8 birds in about 10 to 20 seconds. Maybe the OP regrade switching over and is trying to justify himself for the switch.
he might as well get a cup and string along with a star chart to map with for location for a phone.

The irony is freaking delicious.
i see a lot of people here are new to TECHNOLOGY. I've been around computers since the first desktop computer came out. Many on here started using computers only when facebook became popular. The point is, the true value in technology does not lie in paying for a device at it's birth.
I repeat, $330 a year for what???
It's $330 for service...not a device that can be resold and make half your money back in a year. What do you really need so badly to download from the internet that requires you to get a data plan instead of using wifi?
The initial bad reviews for the Garminfone was because it only supported 1.6 at the time. 2.1 isn't that bad. And get this, Garminfone is made by Asus which is the best quality PC brand!
Of course the vibrant is better...well it ought to be if you're paying $330 more a year!!! It all comes down to price! You expect more if you pay more!
If you bought your Vibrant through Tmobile, you could have easily swapped it out for a newer model without the hardware problem at no cost to you. My GPS is working fine, and yes in some cases it fares better than standalone units.
People use their phones for browsing all the time, that's kind of the major point of a smartphone...
As for the data plan, I use Audiogalaxy to stream my entire music collection (upwards of 200 gigs of music) from my computer at home, to my car. How would you do that without a data plan again?

my point is, if you're paying an extra $30 a month which is $330 a year for data when there is wifi in just about every mall, mc donalds, star bucks...why even bother?

What about everyone who doesnt have wifi at work. Those who don't visit malls or fast food restaurants. What about the fact then even those who do have wifi at work also have many restrictions to go along with it. I'd rather have the network with me at all times than to have to go somewhere to use the internet

and on top of that, why pay for data if you already have wifi at home and in the workplace??

Again... You assume everyone has wifi at home/work.

Again. I use my phone for full web browsing on a daily bases even at home. As do many others who do too. You shouldnt make statements like that without knowing peoples habbits for a fact.

It's all about functionality and value!!!!
I can be in the middle of nowhere and get GPS directions, address and telephone numbers without a data plan! No paying $330 yearly!

Cool story. Whatever works for you. But don't pretend you know whats best for everyone just because its best for you.

So back to my question, does your GPS on your Vibrant work accurately without a data plan or wifi?

Again. Yes my Vibrant is just as accurate and in some cases MORE accurate. And it is possible to use the GPS without a data plan.

Unlimited access to the cloud and everything that entails, at speeds that are often faster than the average wifi connection. This also works when in a car, on a bus, at the beach, in the mall, in an airport, while doing handstands, practicing your backflips on a trampoline, hell even when I'm walking to the office, dropping my drawers, and dropping a deuce all over my ****ty Asus netbook

Its consistent convenience. Social Networking, streaming radio (including jacked into my car stereo), XDA app, certain games, Market access anytime, etc.

Exactly, and with Maps 5.0 you have offline route caching, so you can still navigate when you lose data service.
people really need internet on a tiny little device 24/7 for $330?
Sure everything is case by case, but $330 in this economy when MOST people already have wifi. This is how ridiculous cellphone plans are! It use to be a device for talking and now people describe it like a NECESSITY!
This is exactly why Americans are always broke! They don't know the meaning of value. It's one thing that you're Donald Trump, but MAJORITY of people don't need internet service with them 24/7.
If you're using your mobile device for tethering, then that's a good thing...but when you already have wifi at home like most people, this is completely a waste!
Does anyone have proof that the Vibrant GPS works great by itself without a data plan. I'm looking for proof online. Maybe a video or article.
Hey, if the aGPS works like real GPS on the vibrant, I'd completely switch back.

The vibrants GPS can operate in 3 different modes. One of which is STANDALONE. meaning the phone gets its data directly from the sats. Meaning no network connection is needed.
