Please Help Me Summing It Up - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

hello everyone!
i have bought a HTC Hermes from eBay and hopefully will receive the device soon. As I want to be prepared, when my new toy arrives, I have already started to read thru the Wiki and the Forums! I know, that the experts, which have been posting here for years now, want every beginner to RTFW and to use the search function and so on. What some mebers here don't seem to understand, that such a huge amount of information, which is often unstructured, easily misunderstood and/or simply outdated, is almost impossible to overcome!
personally, i am sure i learned a lot by reading thru xda-devs for sevreal days. but nevertheless, all this different information leaves me just confused and unsecure. seriously, i dont want to take any chances of bricking my pda!
so my appeal is to sum up some basic information regarding flashing & upgrading. and to make sure that i dont make any mistakes i ask all of you to correct me if i am wrong (which i am most likly going to be a couple of times).
ok. lets go!
basically i believe, that since latest developments
( --> "Free HTC Hermes SIM & CID Unlocker *New* version v3a" & --> "Hard-SPL V7"),
almost all Hermes versions can be UNLOCKED & UPGRADED safely, regardless of what bootloader version they are running....
true?
so all I need to upgrade to my phone to the latest versions is
HardSLP, the UNLOCKER and the ROMs I want to install!
true?
using those new tools mentioned above, downgrading to official 1.04 SLP rom versions (?!) to upgrade IS NOT necessary anymore.
true?
if my phone is once prepared with the two tools mentioned above, it is ready to get flashed again and again.... using those tools is a one time thing, which has to be done first time flashing.
true?
i have some questions as well you could help me with!
in what order should I start working?
what are the first steps? (which tool is used first?)
what are the major mistakes i could make to brick my device, even if i use the newest tools...?
i really hope that some people will understand my problems and try help me!
i would really like to contribute to the forums and if this wokrs out as i imagine, it could result in a new and up to date beginners guide!
thanks for reading!
please help!
regards,krz

Personally....
1) unlock as I believe it actually upgrades your SPL to 1.40. This is fine BUT if you've put Hard SPL ver 7 on then you have to run it again.
2) Hard SPL Ver7. You can put version 9 on BUT its for developers & really doesn't help the person who wants to just flash. It also throws up an error message after flashing that can be worrisome. No problem but apparently it needs fixing.
3) Find a rom you like - Only a hermes rom... If you find a rom you like for another Phone and they try to flash this you can be assured of an instant brick. Its like throwing an english speaking person into another country where no english is spoken. BIG TROUBLE... and unlike a person, the phone won't adapt and learn.
Check the forum for a rom you like, I can guarantee there is no "perfect rom" and sooner than later something else will come along that MUST be tried... Start with wm 6 as these are known to be stable and cut your teeth with these before venturing into the deep waters of 6.1. When you're confident flashing and troubleshooting these, then try wm6.1 as some work and research will/may be necessary to get these roms working stable.
4) Have fun....
Cheers...

thank you ultramag69!
unfortuneatly, noone else seems to want to help me here...
well, i'll keep on trying...
i had time for some further reading.
it seems, that I would not necessarily need the HTC Hermes SIM & CID Unlocker, if my phone was NOT simlocked.
instead of that, i could use the latest version of HardSPL to make it SuperCID!
RIGHT OR WRONG?
[btw: what excacty is the difference between SPL & MFG? what is a mfg anyway?]
I found THIS GUIDE while reading the forums.
* Housekeeping
* Flashing HardSPL
* Upgrading the Radio
* Upgrading to ______ WM6
* Programs and Settings
no matter what ROM version, bootloader, radio, etc. my phone is, following this guide would always work!
RIGHT OR WRONG?
if NOT, when wouldn't it?
what exceptions are there?
again, please be so kind and comment on this. i would realy be glad to be absolutely sure in what i am going to have to do!
there is still some insecurity left, please help me to make things a little clearer for me!
thank you in advance!
regards,
krz

As for Hard SPL, you can flash ANY HERMES rom... DONT TRY TO FLASH ANY OTHER ROMS.... Also, remember always that Hard SPL ISNT a guarantee not to brick your phone, its a safety net to help you when (and if you get to flashing alot) things go splat. It means that fixing a brick is put back into the realms of possibility instead of you now owning a very expensive paperweight. Please remember too that upgrading your radio rom is the riskiest thing to do on your hermes. most bricks come about because the radio rom gets corrupted & CANT be fixed... Hard SPL or no...As the saying goes, "if it aint broke, don't fix it". depending where you are in the world depends on which radio rom is best... research first and dont overflash this. If in Oz then 1.54.30.10 is selected by Testra. Seems to be ok...
Hope this isnt too much for you to digest...

thank you again ultramag!

that's clear. of course i meant any HERMES Roms regardless of version number, etc. ROMs of other devices (eg. Wizard, Kaiser) are of course NOT compatible...
i just wanted to double check, that downgrading to a certain bootloader is not necessary anymore in times of HardSLP v7...?

i'm curious, why upgrading the radio ROM is that riskiy or some much riskier that upgrading the windows ROM for example. is it only, because it can't be fixed when flashing goes wrong? or is flashing the radio rom more likely to go wrong than flashing WindowsROM ?

Just the guides... Helped me lotsa times...
Downgrading your SPL from 2.10 isn't the best idea if you are gonna flash a lot a It is a safety net. If you do want to downgrade SPL you can, there is a guide in the wiki.
When the radio rom upgrading goes wrong it seems to be that the memory itself becomes corrupted. There are plenty of "fixes" BUT they seem to work erratically. The os is completely wiped and rewritten and doesn't seem to be affected by these "unrecoverable bad blocks". It can still be screwed up but is more tolerant of errors and can be repaired easily enough using MTTY(do search on wiki).
Read some of the posts about people who've bricked their phone & you'll see that MOST people who cant recover their Hermes have screwed up their radio... ie. phone displays "No GSM". Most can still use the PDA part of the Hermes BUT it won't make calls again so is considered a brick.
Most cooked roms DON'T contain the radio rom.
As for "Yes/No Answers", Yes you are partially right and no, you are partly wrong. Did that clear that up???

totally!
i know that i know nothing!
anyways, thanks for trying. i think it kinda worked....
i flashed the Blue Angel and the Wizard a couple of times without any problems... my PC even crashed once while flashing the wizard.... fortuneatly i could reflash it afterwards..... i thought flashing the HERMES could be more of a hustle... ?
regarding the RADIO ROM: i guess, i will avoid flashing the radio too often!
btw: i am from AUSTRIA, Europe, and I am using the telering/t-mobile network!
recommending me a good RADIO ROM for telering/t-mobile austria would be very much appreciatiaed!
after all, flashing from SD card instead of flashing via an USB connection seems to be recommendeable regarding safety issues! i shall consider that as well!
breaking it down:
1) use HardSPL to upgrade ROMs (instead of downgrading to official SPLs, which are flashable...)
2) dont upgrade the radio too much. find the best one for your provider, flash it once, keep it if it works!
3) safety first! use the SD card for flashing instead of the PC and USB connection.
aight?

Soon grasshopper, you will take over.....answering these questions...
As for radio rom, sorry, but I'm in Australia, ass end of the world where all the crap phones turn up. REALLY happy to find a FANTASTIC phone in the Hermes.....

hello again....
i want to start flashing soon, but there are still some things unclear.
regarding the AKU: i read about AKu in the forums, but i am still not sure about it....
when i upgrade to windows mobile 06 for example, is there a AKU included?
only in official ROMs?
or do i have to upgrade AKUs seperatly?
could anyone at least briefly answer my questions and maybe even try to explain the whole AKU stuff for me again...
would be awesome!
thx in advamce

ps: the more i read in the wiki, the more confused i get... all this outdated information is confusing me more and more... it is really hard to catch up here. specially when all u get is a "gofckyourselfandreadthewiki"-post

You're just getting information overload, If you searched for "What is AKU" using google you'd have got this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1445514&postcount=1
Just follow Mr Vanx's Guide http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=65&Itemid=26 or else http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1186163&postcount=1 from start to end & you should have a successful flash. This link is also very handy for beginners http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1465974&postcount=1
Just remember if you intend to flash one of the WM6.1 Roms, many of the members feel that it is best to flash an official carrier Rom before flashing your selected Rom to prevent H/R issues. Happy Flashing!

Newbie...worries about upgrading

Hi im a relative newbie to the forum and have seen threads about upgrading my WM5 to a new Rom? version of WM6 but I have some basic questions which dont seem to be covered.
1. What exactly is a ROM upgrade?
2. The thread I saw for rom upgrade had several different version of WM6, Im totally confused about which one to use?
3. Will I be able to revert back to my working WM5 with a hard reset if I dont like the upgrade or it goes wrong?
4. Are there any risks associated with upgrading to WM6?
5. What does 'radio' mean? (as in my system info below)?
Sorry for seemingly basic question but hope someone can help.
Thanks

Changing the "firmware" in your hermes, generally to an higher/newer/better version. There are several parts in a rom, bootloader, OS, radio, extrom, etc... you can choose if you want to upgrade them all or only some parts.

no, you'll have to flash the t-mobile rom (available in the wiki) to go back to what you have now. Some parts will not be reversible depending on what you upgrade, read more below.

Yes, too many to list them, read through the hardSPL & bricked devices thread and you'll see.

The radio is a separate subsystem on your hermes which handles the GSM communication part of the device.
You have radio 1.05 which has radio bootloader 0106 (very old). If you upgrade to a radio with radio bootloader 0108 you will not be able to flash back your original radio, you'll get a No-GSM error which will make your device a brick unless you have HardSPL on it. You can safely upgrade to radios with radio bootloader 0107 and then go back to your original radio without problems.
Well Ive just read the wiki upgrading for begginers guide as well as the "common upgrading problems". ...and im very panicky about doing the upgrade. (even should I do everything by the book it could still be a brick from what I read).

Well, if you flash Olipro's Hard SPL you are more protected from a bad flash than if you don't. But yes, flashing unofficial roms always has the potential to "brick" your device, and your carrier will make you pay for repair or replacement if they detect that you have non-standard components flashed into your phone.
If you follow all the instructions and solutions provided here by the knowledgeable ones you will most likely not have any problems. If you skip steps or don't heed their advice you could end up with an expensive paper weight.
if you're not yet comfortable upgrading, read some more and ask some more questions. don't rush it.
ask more questions?? I was fired down by my initial post (by some!), how dare I ask any more questions?
You will be fired down again if you prove in your post you have not read the basics... you'll not be fired down if your post shows you've already read something and know what you're talking about. The forums are here for asking, so don't be afraid if you have read, searched and don't find the answers to your question.
OK thanks POF., ii accept that.
Well, I think im sticking with WM5. its just too riscky the thought of having a brick when I have a house made of them already.
Al
Just to let you know, I was pretty hesitant to upgrade for a while there as well. I had the stock HTC 7/22/06 ROM on my phone, and I was getting tired of having to reboot it every day or two after it wouldn't turn on or would lock up.
I upgraded to Black 2.0 Cingular edition 2 days ago (I'm on Cingular). I followed the directions posted on this website: http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=26
I flashed to HardSPL, no problem, by downloading the files he indicated and following instructions to the letter.
Then I proceeded to upgrade radio, and had an odd thing happen - the upgrade program did not recognize the SPL that I had put it - so I forced HardSPL for both radio and ROM upgrades (separate steps) and it worked fine.
Now my device seems very stable, radio reception is good, battery life is good, and it's relatively speedy, but I admit I haven't had a week or two yet to really see how it works over time. The speed difference from WM5 to WM6 is not quite so amazing ... menus go a little faster, reading from directories is faster, but reading emails in the new HTML email reader is actually a little slower, and the calendar has a new time-bar overview that makes it just a touch slower. The new version of Pocket Informant runs great thought, and pretty speedy.
Rom Version: Pro Black 2.0
Rom Date 1/4/07
Radio Version: 1.40.30.00
Protocol Version: 32.73.7020.16H
The more you read and understand the more comfortable you will feel with the process.
Yes, there are horror stories in these threads but the vast majority are the result of people flashing a rom without doing their homework first.
Read the threads on the various roms and see what the people who have already flashed are saying. Study the guides and understand everything that is talked about in them.
There are no guarantees in this hobby, but the cooks turn out some very reliable roms and the the guides are very well written and easy to follow.
The folks here are very helpful if you have tried to help yourself first. The "venting" that sometimes occurs is because it gets tiring to read the same basic questions day in and day out when those questions have already been answered dozens of times.
If you do have a problem, and your question shows that you have done things right and have already tried to solve it yourself, and you provide good information about the problem then the folks here will gladly assist you in trying to solve it.

If you depend on the phone, like for work or personal communications, and can't stand to be without it, I strongly recommend you stick with the ROM's your carrier puts out. WM6 is still iffy -- it's not really ready for prime time on the Hermes/TyTN's yet. It works, mostly, but there are still some really weird things that will occasionally happen.
Most carriers will be putting WM6 out within the next few months; if you can wait for stable carrier tested and supported software...
Otherwise, welcome. Follow the instructions, step by step, focus on HardSPL first. Oh, and a helpful hint -- don't let anyone near your phone while it's flashing. If that USB cable falls out, you can toast your phone (I learned this the expensive way).

LOL....fair enough!
The reason we get a bit touchy on here when these sorts of questions have been asked is because alot of this information has been made readily available by pof, olipro, walshy etc.... (you know who you are!) yet some users decide to not bother reading it then come back moaning when they brick thier device!!
Its most likely you will go without bricking your device if you dont steam into flashing when you havent quite read up and understood everything yet
My guides are there to help you through upgrading a ROM successfully however what I would suggest is that you DEFINATLY follow THIS GUIDE to flash olipros Modified bootloader (HardSPL) to your device, this is the first step to safeguarding your Hermes against a dodgy flash and will quite easily save you from sending the device back if there is a problem. You can do this without worrying as it is a simple procedure if you follow the guide exactly.
The next step could be to upgrade your Radio version which again is described in THIS GUIDE. Once you have done those give your device a test for a few days and see if it has improved at all (your GSM/3G reception SHOULD be better and more stable with the new radio).
The ROM you are running is quite a dated one, since HTC hasnt released any roms (officially ) but there are some upgrade options aailable to you that dont involve going all the way to WM6. Id recommend reading through the guides and following the threads mentioned, give them two upgrade stages a shot (do them in the order i specify though) and you should be on your way to earning your first flashing badge

Flash Hard-SPL... the only way you will then be able to brick your phone then is if you flash a new radio and somehow time it to pull out the cable when the Radio BL updates.
you'll be just fine, just read the ****ing wiki

We all started as beginners, but sometimes (mwa..ALWAYS) you need to read first before you ask any questions..
Lets just say..its not that hard to upgrade your device..but you need all the info/wisdom you can get.. so..read first (WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI) and than ask..
And welcome!
Thanks everyone for your support. THink someone said if I use it for busines (which I do) then I ought to stick with the phone as it is. I know I can read up but, to me, SPL is a dodgy, talentless football league in Scotland. Nuff said.

Can't believe no-on has said this already... but you need to read the Wiki and do lots of searching / reading through the forum.
It's good that you don't want to brick your device. Research the topic by reading what is already there... no need to ask the same questions again
The WIKI will explain bootloaders and flashing to you. link in the brown bar at the top of the page, it says XDA-Wiki, click it look for the picture of the hermes device and click it. There is a wealth of information there for everyone's use.
As far as what functionality you will have with what rom - read the first post in the rom thread. The cooker will usually have a detailed list of included/removed items from the rom. Only you can decide which rom is the best for you, everyone uses their device differently and as such everyone has different ideas of what a good rom is.
Lastly, if you don't understand anything read before you start to flash. The Hermes isn't as forgiving as other devices when flashing and you could very easily ruin your device if you don't take some standard precautions. The awesome people in this forum have come up with tools to help you recover from just about every form of bricking, but nothing can save you from not having a plan ahead of time.
I suggest after you read the Wiki, that you start with the Olipro Hard-SPL before you flash anything else to your phone. And as always ask yourself why you need to upgrade your device. If the answer isn't substantial and you aren't prepared to lose the device due to a bad flash or just plain bad luck you shouldn't flash. Again if you are prepared ahead of time flashing is relatively safe, but if you jump in without knowing what you should, you risk ruining your device.

WM6 upgrade guide.. And something else

I have a hurricane and i would like to upgrade it to WM6.1..
But now i want a guide! Because the last time i just did it, i bricked it.. The SPL flash went wrong and now the hurricane is dead.. completely dead.. But unfortunally i have another one i wish to try it on but i need an exact guide..
And then i suspect my other hurricane to be some kind of prototype.. I flashed the "patched_ruu" and it went fine but after that i just got a white screen and now the device dosn't work.. I have tried to get help but as it seems it is not repairable.. So i would like to know if the device i have is a "genuine" hurricane? How can i check that?
The other hurricane i had was not branded.. Nothing was stated on the cover.. The one i want to flash now is branded "Qtek 8200" and the splash screen says "Test Only - Not for sale"
Can somebody help me here ? Iam afraid to brick this device too !
Guys damned i need some help here !
There are more than enough upgrade guides. Just look into the longer WM5 or WM6 threads and make sure that the ROM you downloaded really is intended for your device. Don't just assume and better check twice. HTC devices have confusingly many codenames and are sold under dozens of different brand names. Even some people writing guides confuse one or the other model.
Sorry, I know this is the answer you just didn't want. But reading the threads provides just the kind of information you need if you don't want to brick the second phone.

I assumed it was a rom intended for my device, cause the rom i downloaded was in the WM6 from this forum.. The guide in the thread i found isn't very desciptive.. Others have downloaded and got it to work on their device but somehow i did something wrong OR it could be because my device was a sample.

how to flash my touch dual and install a new rom

hi , i lwant to install a new rom on my device (niki is my first win mobile device), but i'm a really newbie and i dont know what to do to install it! Would u help me saying what i have to flash and to install the rom correctly on my niki (without breaking it ) ? I've read all the sticky and i've tried to search in the forum but i've not understand what to do !
Thanks a lot guys
me too =( so many thinks dont understand..
can someone explain us step by step how to flash the device and install a new rom (i want to try the new tom codon rom)?
Before you start anything,
know that you will void your warranty if you send in your device with a different SPL and rom that it came loaded with, you should know how to revert back for warranty reasons. If you dont want to risk anything, I recommend not continuing. If you are unsure read the threads completely until you are comfortable.
This is just a simple starting piont and not a guide.
Use this post to find the threads to help unlock, update your HardSPL and flash your rom. I know the ropes somewhat but I may be a little off, since I havent done this in awhile, but here is the gist of it.
First thing you should do is check to see what device you have.
To do this take you battery off and look for a model number (i.e. NIKI100, NEON200 or NEON300) This will tell you what device you have and what Roms are available to you. Niki100 is the most common
After that you need to find out if you device is carrier locked
and if so I beleive you need to unlock it. It wouldnt hurt anyways to have the device unlocked. This allows you to use your phone on any supporting network. These locked devices are generally branded by cell phone companies like Orange or Tmobile ect.. If you have a straight HTC device more than likely you are not locked to a network.
Next you will need to update your USPL or HardSPL
by following this thread by jockyw2001 - If you can not figure this thread out, you may want to consider not flashing your device because there is always risk involved in damaging your phone especially if you dont know why and what your are doing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355730
Now you can flash a rom that is compatible.
Check the Rom that has been developed for guides and read the all the post for problems before flashing. This is important because alot of the Roms may be a Beta meaning they have bugs to be worked out, plus it makes other user's happier that you dont ask alot of questions that have been posted before. Make sure that the Rom will be compatible with your device (NIKI100 or NEON200 ect..)
Please continue at your own risk, I can not be responsible for errors and bricking you device. I am just tyring to give you direction to start.
Hope this helps and good luck - Thanks

[Q] Help with SPL and HSPL.

Hi, my name is Joe. I am looking into installing a custom ROM. I am indeed a noob when it comes to tweaking the HD2, and what the SPL and HSPL are. I am hoping someone can give me an insight to what they are, I do know my SPL is version 1.44. But other than that, not much more I'm afraid.
Any help will be appreciated
Noob or not, this should be a perfect start: Klick!
If you want to use Android or WP7, start with the link above to learn the basics, then proceed to the HD2 Android and HD2 WP7 subforums.
I strongly recommend to follow this path. Reading several threads these days here at the HD2 forum, I can clearly see that some people tend to skip the first step, they don´t learn the basics, and don´t know about HSPL or Radio ROM Versions etc. - the risk to brick your device grow drastically.

Thank you, but two questions. Do I need SPL 1.42 to install the custom ROMs? And what exactly is HSPL?
Thank you once again.

HSPL authorized you to install custom Rom, without risking to brake your device.
