Hi guys. I've read through the threads and I've not seen anything specific to my question.
Had to buy the XV6800 for work out of my pocket. Two months later, they let me go (downsizing....yay for me). Luckily, they owned the plan, but I own the phone.
Can I load the Sprint ROM onto my phone and activate it on the Sprint network? I've been with Sprint for 10 years and they generally treat me good. The tech support guy in the store said 'theoretically, yes, if you load the Sprint ROM it should work, but I don't know if they'll activate it or not and we can't support it." He did say that Sprint was trying to be more open in their network.
Any takers to this one? Otherwise, I'm going to have to Ebay this phone, and I really hate doing that. It's been a decent phone. Putting it on Sprint would be nice.

EDIT: I'm asking this because I've seen people mention that they are stuck on Sprint's towers when they upgrade the XV6800 with one of the custom ROMs. It seems possible then to talk Sprint into activating it. But what would I need? MSL, etc?
If it doesnt say "SPRINT" on the phone sprint wont activate it.
This has been discussed several times at PPCGeeks, and from what I've read, it's a lot easier to take a Mogul from Sprint and put it on VZ's network, than it is to take an XV6800 from VZ and put it on Sprint's network. that is, as long as you talk to the right VZ tech. i believe that the techs at VZ have a lot easier time entering new ESN's into their database than do techs at Sprint, and the ones at VZ are a lot more willing to do this. sorry.
but my guess is that after Verizon opens up their network to foreign CDMA ESN's (in june/july-ish i believe) that Sprint would more than likely start putting in more ESN's to grab your business. otherwise, it'd be fighting up a slippery slope if any phone on sprint could be used willingly on verizon.
as for your problem, i really don't know how exactly, but if you do under the grace of god manage to have sprint enter the ESN in, i believe it only takes a few EPST setting changes and a customization to work.

Well yes here is an idea for you, but keep in mind that doing it is technically NOT legal to do, for reasons we will not go into. If you have a phone that is on Sprint that is EVDO then you could put the ESN and MIN in the 6800. I am not suggesting that you do this at all, but it would work. Other than legallity issues, and that you could never turn on the power to that other phone or else it would trip fraud detection software and cause a re-generate of the A-Key in the system killing your 6800, so I say just don't do it, but it would work.

I gather this isn't legally possible without having Sprint unlock your phone (which they said they'll start doing, AFTER contracts run out), and then having Verizon permit your unlocked phone onto their network.
There are probably ways of doing it yourself, but they're not legal. And they require more intimate knowledge of the phone networks than I possess.

It would work as the devices are pretty much the same, major diff is the MSL. Sprint uses an algorithm to compute this code based on ESN, where Verizon just uses 000000 on all units. This could be changed easily and you could even have a ROM cooked up that would load the VZW applications loaded up. Where you run into a problem is that both carriers look at the ESN range that your unit falls in and will deny you just simply based on that alone. It is a rule of the carrier as opposed it not working. Maybe they will open the rules one day, as they actually do use the same CDMA network, as a consultant I work on Sprint, VZW, Alltel, and many others systems.
The way I see it, if sprint is allowing the phones to go global, then it should work. I remember in the days when i was in love with the e815 for vzw. The e816 came out, which is a black version, but it was only for amped mobile. I was able to swap out the rom and then use the e816 on verizons network. I'm not sure if its the same for sprint, but maybe since they're all cdma phones anyway.
I'm tempted to try a VZW ROM on my phone and see what happens... I got as friend with VZW I could call in and try to activate under her account... Maybe I'll try it.
I was a cell tech 10 years ago but now I am lost. I want to switch providers but keep my phone. Company techs say no way, have to buy new phone. That HTC 6800 and xv6800 look similar but have different guts and one will not emulate the other. Can I flash the mogul to work with verizon? If so, A few keywords for searching this site, to get up to speed would be greatley appreciated. Thanks for your help.
The phones are essentially identical if you put cosmetic differences aside. The real difference is that Sprint have that one's ESN number in their database for the phone, and Verizon have no knowledge of that phone in their database. So, if you call VZW they will say, "hmmm... nope, we can't help you." But, if you illegally change that one's ESN to the ESN of a valid Verizon phone, you can register that phone to their network. But, there is a little difference about ESN, MSL, MSID, etc. between VZW and Sprint... so if you decide to break the law well, make sure to research your topic thoroughly. It is possible though.

verizon now (or will soon) lets you use any phone on their network (provided its CDMA of course) so having them activate a sprint mogul shoudlnt be an issue

I wonder. If I use DCD kitchen, load the verizon radio, DCD ROM, then the verizon Carrier cab......would it work?

I don't believe so. The radio in the sprint phone is GSM and the radio in the Verizon phone is CDMA.
Edit: I am incorrect. Sprint is CDMA and Verizon is CDMA... so I'm guessing that it could be possible. I have yet to test this though.

The only issue is getting Verizon to activate it on their network, as it has a Sprint ESN. In the past, they were very strict about not allowing any non-Verizon ESN's in their database, though I've heard RUMORS that they've eased up a bit on it due to their "Open Network" campaign.
Honestly, it's a crapshoot, but if you can get Verizon Support to activate it, then it would work perfectly.

I heard somewhere that verizon has a new policy to support any phone on their network, but they also call their data plan with a 5GB cap the "UNLIMITED" plan. Go figure.
Hopefully when Sprint comes out with the Diamond and other awesome new HTC phones about a year ahead of Verizon, we will be able to active their hardware on The Network. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Yes it can be done. i have an alltel ppc6800 on vzw. the easiest way to do it is from the vzw website esn switch or activate equipment. There are some other steps you have to take to get the software loaded, not the stock rom. Then you will have to call vzw and have them reset your DMU keys. start here:

Hi, this is my first post on the XDA forums and I have some Q's. Hopefully I find some A's. Can someone point me in the right direction or explain this. I bought a used Sprint Mogul and I have Alltel. I want to have this phone work for Alltel. All I have right now is the newest HTC rom for alltel and the Titan Unlocker. Will someone give me a hand on how to make this phone my new phone for Alltel? BTW I dont want to really run any custom roms unless I have to.

The problem isn't the rom, the problem is that carriers store their "own" ESN's in their systems, since the phone wasn't sold to Altel originally, it won't be in their system. There are stories of people having success getting one carrier or the other to activate other carriers phones, but it's extrememly rare and very difficult to do. The first thing you would have to do is download the stock rom for Altel for your model phone, flash it, and verify the phone boots and appears to work. At this point, you can try going into the Altel store and see if you can convince their reps to activate the phone. If they won't, then try calling customer service and see if you can get them over the phone to do it, however again, their system is going to throw up a flag when they try to activate someone other carriers phone.
If the phone doesn't look exactly like Altel's there is even less of a chance of getting it activated.
Honestly your best bet is to put it back on ebay and take the proceeds from that sale to buy a used Altel phone. You will have a whole lot less trouble.

Well what if I took the current esn of my razr on change my mogul to that? would that work and if so how do I do that.
That is illegal and even discussing it in this forum can get you banned.
While possible, Altel will know it's a data phone and could legally sue you for violating their terms of service.
Again, your best bet is either to change to Sprint, or swap the phone out on ebay for one from Altel.

Mogul on Alltel
I just bought a Mogul and loaded an Alltel stock ROM last weekend. It has been working great. Alltel will put the ESN in no problem if you call them on the phone. Don't tell them it is from another carrier. All they asked me was what type of phone it was.
Tools I used:

make sure you have the usb cable, activesync if you are on XP, otherwise Vista has it already.
Basically you need to
1. Get the MSL code from GetSPC inputing your ESN and it outputs the MSL.
2. Put your phone in DIAG mode (##3424# ##3424 Send, or #*#3424). If it is a sprint phone, the first one will work.
3. Run QPST (you will need the MSL you obtained from getSPC
4. You may want to save the phone's configuration if you ever want to roll back to the SPCS config. Anway, Change the MSL to 000000 and write it back to the phone.
5. then run the Hard-SPL-MFG.exe program, paying attention to when it tells you to disconnect and reconnect your phone.
6. Then install your ROM by running the RUU program on your pc.
7. Now, you will need to configure service by going into DIAG mode again (probably need to use ##3424 SEND now) and using QPST change the service information to that for Alltel or whatever carrier you want. I had it easy, I plugged in my Samsung Hue R500 and copied the service information off of that one.
8. If you get all the service information right, you should be able to call Alltel, give them the ESN. If they give you slack, wait a bit and call back until you get someone nice. Persistance is the key. Then you can do *228 for OTA programming.

The Altel store here doesn't. I don't have Altel so I have never called their customer service, but since I see this same question asked for every other carrier and they all get the same advice I handed out, I assumed that all Altel stores were the same.
Sorry for "misinforming" someone, however, the fact that it has been programmed for sprint may cause him issues down the road... So again, I still think my advice of getting an Altel branded phone is the smartest option.

why would getting an alltel phone be any different than using a sprint/AT&T etc phone. They are all the same, just locked onto their networks for service. If he had bought an HTC Titan that was not branded to a carrier he would have the same luck as all others. Many people still buy unlocked out of the box phones. Most carriers will also add them to their services. The stores may not, but the phone people will. These companies are in business to make money and have customers and turning someone down because they don't get your free phone ain't gonna happen. Just don't tell them it was another carrier's phone.
First off AT&T is GSM, which means if the phone is unlocked you can just stick and sim card in there and bam, it works.
CDMA is different. I know I have looked at my QPST and EPST info pretty close, and there are many settings in there that are carrier specific, so that if you were to try to use it on a different carrier it wouldn't work very well. Phone most likely will work, but data is a different beast. I see dozens of people on here who flash a sprint rom on their verizon phone and accidently let customization run, once you've done this, rolling back to a verizon rom in some cases doesn't fix the problem, you have to go in and hand edit a lot of settings, the same could apply here, since Sprint apparently is different than most carriers.
I'm glad you've had luck getting other carriers phone's activated, and how many of those were smart phones? I bet most were just plain phones, in which case there isn't any problems.

As to the OP, feel free to try to get it activated, heck, it might work, but if it doesn't, then again, get the correct carrier branded phone and you will have no problems!

actually I am not flaming, and not stating opinion. I am stating fact. If you buy a stock HTC phone w/o contract, which would be unlocked. You can get it activated on any carrier that supports its network CMA or GSM. Smartphone or regular phone. The point is to not tell them it was from another carrier.

Actually it can be done. I done it today with no problem. Just because the epst and qpst settings are carrier specific doesn't mean that they cant be changed. What I will say is that after you have unlocked the phone and finally have your # activated on alltel via esn your sprint mogul will be functional. you have to update the prl so u wont be stuck in roaming and your data package will be disabled because Sprint uses a different server address. In order to change these settings you will use both qpst to set in hard settings and back everything up and then epst to keep the settings within the phone. the reason you wont have data has to deal with the Security and M.IP settings. its a lot to type so im not going to but if im on at any time you can pm me to walk you through it or even better you can reach me on yahoo messenger. its set within my phone as well so I can give you real time help with the settings on the spot. My messenger name is seraphazaziel79 as well.
I bought a Qwest phone sometime this Spring and I was trying to get it activated on Verizon. I flat out told them it was from another carrier, they put that in my customer file and copied down the ESN so when I called back and told them that it was a XV6800 they called me out on it. Basically lie to them from the beginning and you should be good. If they won't activate it you can sell a Sprint phone on ebay. My Qwest phone makes a pretty decent paper weight.
I have a PPC6800 flashed with one of Ryan's Alltel 6.5 ROMS (Great job Ryan!). The phone worked great in my home area after the flash, but I'm currently on vacation and cannot get a EVDO signal in Orlando! I get decent signal for voice in most places, but really just enought to make calls, lots of "can you hear me now" in the conversations. Verizons maps show that they cover this area completely so I went by the Verizon store to see if they could update the phone. The tech guy said that the phone was still really an Alltel phone and there was nothing that he could do. (he was kinda a jerk, didn't appear to even want to help) I use the data connection alot and have become very dependent on it to stay in touch with my office, but with my current 1x connection, email is about all it's good for.
My questions are:
Can I apply the Verizon version of the ROM to the phone without bricking it?
If not, is there something I can do myself to "update" to tap into Verizon's EVDO network?

Yeah, I tried that, but since I'm already out of my home area, it doesn't work. All I get is "programming unsuccessful" or something like that.
Alltel's pda support is pretty good. Call in & get one of them on the line. They will try & make you do the *228 thing. Also check your setting for Home Only/Roam and see if that makes a difference at all.

Lol WOW.. If your Carrier is Verizon why the heck would you flash my Alltel ROM?? WTF do you think its an Alltel ROM for?? Its not a stock ROM it is a Custom ROM meant to flash on any TITAN(mogul, ppc6800).. It is fully programmed (besides PST/QPST a user has to program that memory region of the phone themselves) for the Carrier..
What you should have done was take your "Alltel Branded" PPC6800 and flashed the olipro2.40 unlocked bootloader, then flash a Custom Verizon ROM, then flash a gps radio 3.35 and up, then hard reset and pull battery for a couple minutes. Make sure the phone is UNPLUGGED and boot it up. Now access PST and Program it for VERIZON, load your local Verizon PRL, and update the items so phone resets. When it boots back up you want to access DMR (diagnostic mode) and plug it into the computer and Program QPST for VERIZON, make sure everything is set for Verizon you have to do some searching.. Also make sure to do the GPS one tab last and write to phone while still in that TAB, do not leave the GPS one tab until after its completed. Now unplug the phone and open task manager and close DMR, now soft reset the phone. Keep it UNPLUGGED and when it boots up access the internet to set it up for the first time.

Ryan, I normally agree with you 100%, but I don't think that's the case here. I'm pretty sure he's an Alltel customer that is confused because of Verizon's recent purchase of Alltel.
Basically, Verizon is not going to be fully taking Alltel phones onto their network...ever. They are still Alltel phones. BUT there are new PRLs out there which will allow you to completely utilize the entire Verizon (and Sprint, too) tower structure.
So what he should do is still with the Alltel ROM. And because Alltel gives the 6800 their 3xxxx series PRLs and not the higher quality 4xxxx series, he needs to donwload the best PRL and update it manually.

Thanks for trying to clear things up but its still a little inconclusive. You said he is an Alltel Customer, you also said that Verizon bought Alltel.. Now remember he says he has a "Alltel Branded" TITAN.
If Verizon bought Alltel that means the Carrier Alltel still exists, it wasnt a merger correct?
Ok then, if he has a Alltel TITAN, and he is an Alltel Customer, with my Alltel ROM. Why even mention that VERIZON will not take Alltel phones onto their network??? You said he is an Alltel customer, and he has a Genuine Alltel TITAN, so he would be activating the Genuine Alltel TITAN on Alltel..
I was confused because of all this talk about Verizon maps, verizon store, etc.... I see what you mean about his PRL, so hopefully he updates to the 4xxxx series and his issues vanish. But wow what confusing posts..
Hopefully the Verizon, Alltel purchase doesnt affect my Alltel or Verizon ROMs from working properly. I wouldnt be suprised though..
I think the downloaded PRL should do the trick. I used to work for Alltels data support and they cannot help unless you are on network. If you are roaming on another carriers tower then nothing can be done to manually push a new prl through to the phone. I know from experience that Orlando/Kissimmee area is a tricky area. The issue is that Alltels PRLs are very crappy. There are towers in the area which will not incur you roaming charges, but for whatever reason, the phones will not choose to connect to. I forget the SID of the towers in the area which will get you 3-4 bars of EVDO coverage. What I have done before while I am there is to keep checking your phone to see if it picks up on those towers (it will from time to time). Go and check the current SID number and then set that as your home SID and put the phone in home only mode, which will lock you into those group of towers while you are in that area. Of course, if you leave the area you will want to set your phone back to your normal home SID and take the phone out of home only mode. Hopefully the PRL update via that download link above will help you, but if it doesn't then try this method. I will warn you that if you get the wrong tech on the phone and they try and help you update your phone, then they could make matters worst for you.

...I was confused because of all this talk about Verizon maps, verizon store, etc.... I see what you mean about his PRL, so hopefully he updates to the 4xxxx series and his issues vanish. But wow what confusing posts..
Hopefully the Verizon, Alltel purchase doesnt affect my Alltel or Verizon ROMs from working properly. I wouldnt be suprised though..

LOL, if my post was confusing it's because I'm pretty confused. I went to the Verizon store for several reasons.
I am out of my home area and the nearest Alltel Store is 75 miles away (Tampa,FL).
My Home Store is now a Verizon Store.
I recieved a letter telling me that I was now on the Verizon Network.
When I dial a wrong number I get a Verizon recording.
I heard that Verizon bought Alltel
When I got to the Verizon store, they told me
I was still an Alltel customer
Verizon doesn't carry a phone llike mine (PPC6800)
My phone was a pocket pc phone not a smart phone (yes that's what he said)
There was nothing he could do.
Call Alltel tech Support (he was kind enough to give me their number).
The Alltel guy, though courteous and seemingly genuine in his efforts to help, could not. He even mentioned that he had been in Orlando recently and had the same problem. His only recommendation was to take the battery out overnight so everything would clear and maybe when it reconnected it would update the PRLs.
My apologies for not being more clear.
On a positive note, I took btonetbone's advice and updated the PRL,(this is what I'd hoped the Verizon tech could do) and I am currently getting EVDO connection, at least the status indicator says so. I'm not getting a very good signal where I'm at so the speed is not great. 267 DOWN, 314 UP (oddly enough) on a Speakeasy speed test. I'll see how it works tomorrow when I can get a better signal and know more then.

Its not a stock ROM it is a Custom ROM meant to flash on any TITAN(mogul, ppc6800).. It is fully programmed (besides PST/QPST a user has to program that memory region of the phone themselves) for the Carrier..
What you should have done was take your "Alltel Branded" PPC6800 and flashed the olipro2.40 unlocked bootloader, then flash a Custom Verizon ROM...

Had the Alltel ROM not worked so well in my home area that's exactly what I would have done. Well.... It's exactly what I would have done after coming here and finding out how to do it.

No problem I am glad you got it sorted out, those speeds are better than nothing at all so you are getting somewhere. Also I breezed by your compliments on my work but thanks for the compliments.
Members in general are great here, very knowledgeable and persistent. This is literally the best forum around.. Too bad they dont go the "thanks button" route though that would be magnificent.
