Direct Draw problem is broken hardware, right? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

There is nothing we can do to get direct draw to work on our phone correct?
I read a few places but am really disappointed to hear there is a problem that most likely cannot be fixed. raw frame buffer is better, but I hoped someone would have a workaround.

No. i heard no2chem fixed it all by himself, so i flashed his 5069d the other day, and i was in awe watching a youtube video on TCMP. utter amazement. NOTHING has come close to that quality that ive ever seen on my phone. of course, flashed back to DCD for performance reasons, and i always have problems with N2C's on verizon.

I wonder if DCD has this in the works or if not, would be willing to share notes with N2C on this issue, or if not to reverse engineer for that issue alone.
DCD himself complained that this would be the reason he changes out to a new phone.

Upgrade Benefits :/

Hello everybody
I have been reading on this forum for some time now, and I understand the update process, including unlocking, its all great.
However, Im at a loss - I have no idea what I have to gain from upgrading my ROM.
I currently have an untouched T-Mobile Vario II with bootloader 1.04, hardware vesion (?) 634.
My friend has just recieved his Vario II, v646.
Everyones talking about using ROMs from other providers, but I've yet to read anything substantial about whats to be gained from switching or upgrading ROMs.
What CAN actually be changed by changing ROMs? For example, T-Mobile have been kind enough to bundle my device with a free registered version of 'Spb GPRS Monitor' - it monitors GPRS/3G and battery power, plus providing a useful bar on the today screen. it's very useful and I wouldn't want to lose it should I decide to gamble on a ROM update that provides nothing nearly as useful.
I have identified several short comings of my devide, not the least of which is the fact that it intermittantly skips every 30+ seconds when playing music through my stereo bluetooth earphones. I imagine that some kind of update will be required to fix this, as it seems to be a problem for only certain version of the device - the Vario II being the obvious.
I have also decided that I would like to try other graphic themes. Before I have a go at making my own I thought it might be nice to try some existing ones...
There are lots of hardware/radio versions published, but unless I've missed it theres very little talk about what the ROMs provide.
Cheers very much for all your help thus far, and in advance for anything else you might be able to help me with!
lets make this a simple one.. if you are happy with the device the way it is then there is nothing to change... kinda like the old saying, "If it aint broke then dont fix it"
If there are things you are looking to change then maybe post your problems here and we can tell you if you would benefit from changing roms!
I have the universal and purchased the hermes for size and HSDPA / UMTS improvements.
The universal was upgraded and hacked many times.
However, I cant see an upgrade rom hack that is available at all here for the hermes yet.
Can anybody confirm a WWE 3.x Rom upgrade being available? Mine is Imate, but I am not particularly loyal in any way, but would like more reliable Push Email, and the speed improvements that occur with 3.x
To the moderator, you cant really say if it aint broke dont fix it, cause quite often, you dont know if it is broken until you start to fix something, and you dont know if something is faster, better, more efficient, more effective, or provides improvements in functionality until a question is asked.
Its a bit like me taking my car to a mechanic, they always ask if everything is fine, it always is, but they always call me up and tell me that this isnt working, this needs fixing, and this is about to broke... You can triple the cost if you would like us to fix it.
You didnt know until somebody points out the improvements and benefits.
So, I would like the initial question answered as well, if somebody is prepared to give an explanation and some guidance.
Here's some upgrading facts for you:
There is no AKU 3.x ROM available for the Hermes yet.
Due to a new encryption strategy, ROMS take 25 minutes to flash. Any interruptions during this time may brick your device.
Also due to the above encryption strategy, we are not yet able to cook our own custom ROMS for the Hermes.
Boot Loader v1.04 which shipped with most of the early ROMs contains a bug which allows easy bypassing of CID lock. However subsequent bootloaders fix this problem and will CID lock you to your original vendor. The only crossgrade solution is to first downgrade to a BL1.04 version of your vendor's ROM then exploit the bug to load another. Device owners without a 1.04BL version of their ROM have consequently been unable to crossgrade/unlock their Hermes.
There is a bootleg solution that will flash BL1.04 on any Hermes while leaving the rest of the ROM untouched. However, it isn't available here. In fact the original owner of it's copyrighted code actively pursues anybody who posts this solution on the internet. Consequently, it's worldwide availability is constantly changing
There is a CID/SIM unlock solution by pof that is posted here which works with the 1.04 Bootloader only
The more current ROMS for the DoPod, TyTN and 8525 contain measured performance improvements
The most current radio rom (v1.20) improves battery performance
Most of the newer roms fix a media player audio stutter bug
Getting a combination of the most current radio ROM and the most current device ROM involves 40-60 minutes of flashing time and the use of the bootleg BL1.04 solution described above.
HTH!
Thanks sleuth255 for taking the time to answer comprehensively.
I am really only interested in upgrading to 3.x and will wait and see how things transpire. There was major benefits to the universal upgrade to 3.x however, the hermes doesnt appear to suffer the speed issues of the universal and I am so far very happy with the device.

I tested all the WWE ROM here (not the one with 1.09 bootloader, because since today is a one way only road, no way to flash back the original ROM)
About music skip: not sure if upgrade will solve it (since today) but there is a good patch here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284974
Other well known problems (lost storage card in windows media player, overnight and in-call freeze, poor efficiency (short battery life in UMTS coverage, slow performances if compared to processor speed promise, ...) are still unsolved
I will suggest: play if you want, but having in mind that HERMES ROM flashing today is just for play, have a look, testing, not for really solving anything
Supercid ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282073 ) your device to play with ROMs, now, because you have the 1.04 bootloader version. Once SUPERCIDed you can play with all ROM
Well thats my primary issue at the moment and it sounds a lot like your fix may work for me.
I am using an original ROM im guessing, with bootloader 1.04 so all the doors are open for me. I'm in nor rush, strictly speaking, because I love this device and it generally works wonders for me. I listen to music for long periods of time once in a while (long car journeys alone with my SE ds970 - plugs the ears well providing awsome noise removal from external sources, can't even hear the engine on my crappy Vauxhall Corsa with those in...) but it is during those periods that I suffer with the skipping. fixing it will be wonderful.
I have a question about your fix though, but I worry that having read the first few pages of your other thread, and the last few, I may have missed the answer so I apologise if I'm asking questions you have already answered - but I remember reading the original thread a while ago from the guy who discovered the Task Manager app that fixed the issue and he mentioned that because the software seems to prevent any CPU speed scaling (not sure if thats actually what its doing) he observed that CPU battery consumption while running that specific app + audio decreased noticably. Is this still an issue with your patch? I plan to purchase a working in-car power adapter so it won't really be a problem, but im curious
I'm gonna take my time with regards to ROM upgrades because as has been mentioned above - I have only a few issues which after reading this thread now seem to be standing issues which won't be fixed whatever I decide to do right now. Ultimately, I have the stuff I detailed above adn thus far no steadfast information about which ROMs are good for what. I don't even know anything about this 3.x business noted above...
What I'd like to know now, before I try your fix, is - if i were to install a TyTn ROM (which right now Im assuming is an original HTC TyTn ROM as oposed to a yet-to-be-released T-Mobile ROM...?) will that effectively brand it back to HTC, wipe the onboard flash, give me the original TyTn green theme, remove all the software and settings T-Mobile gave me (they were kind enough to give me a licensed copy of Spb GPRS Monitor which is quite an advantage for me - my friend has a more recent T-Mobile Vario II and they seem to have retracted the offer ... ) and leave me at square one with any fixes/improvements/new-issues that ROM provides?
I also seem to remember reading that because as yet T-Mobile have not released an original ROM, changing now is a one way trip.
I think what I need is for someone to set me in the right direction from the perspective of a early Vario II user. I really enjoy my gadgets, and the best thing about them is "fixing things that aint broke" I love upgrading and trying to squeeze it for all its worth. Better yet, updating my device and gloating to those who have no idea what that means! It's all good...
Anyway, cheers very much for your help thus far - greatly appreciated.

Really, whats the point?

Whats the point in using DCD and all this mess instead of the offical sprint released stuff?
I used the DCD stuff with these versions:
ROM Version: dcd 3.0.4
Rom date: 2/22/08
Radio version: 3.37.20
and now I've updated to this newest stuff and I see 0 differences. Where the heck is the full change log (not the per version one)? I couldn't get youtube to work on my phone before, and I still cant get it to work now. When the hell is someone going to fix that?
I remember a long time ago I look and look, AND LOOKED for a work around, and tried several things with 0 luck.
My main reason for upgrading all this in my phone tonight was so that I could be able to record all my phone conversations and any software I've tried Resco audio recorder, and this weird SPWM5Callrec.cab program all give me the error that it cannot start recording while I'm in a phone call. Does anyone have a fix or work around for this too?
Thanks guys.
P.S. Its on a HTC Mogul.
3.0.4 came out months ago. try updating to 3.3.4 and see if you come across any differences in dcd's latest and the stock rom. i guarantee you will never go back to stock.
edit: i also recommend updating to the 3.42.50 radio. much better reception, and i havent gotten a dropped call since i updated. (although i rarely got them before. ohh verizon...)
also: recording calls without the opposing party's consent is illegal. there are programs which supposedly do it fine, but i can't see how recording calls is your main reason for updating your rom anyway.

Did you PAY for DCD's release? If not, then be MORE considerate, he's releasing ROM's because he can, not because it's his job....
Its pretty straight forward
Install DCD 3.3.4
You gain memory, speed, GPS abilities, etc.
You haven't been reading if you simply think there are no differences.

I know all about the legality of recording calls. Thats beaten to death and back. I still prefer to do it.
I know its free. I'm not disrespecting the guy for making it.
You guys still didnt answer the questions about recordings and youtube.
Also is there a executable for the new radio rom? I have hell trying to get my sd card to work to do this. I dont have 100% the proper equipment to do it, but I can still do it this way, it just takes me alot longer and is alot more tedious and annoying.
Also does the sprint provided one not come with GPS enabled? I haven't reinstalled google maps just yet to find out.
If it's beaten to death, you would know that the hardware in the mogul is not capable of recording calls.

Depends on your local laws. The state laws where I'm at allows you to record phone calls as long as one person knows about it. Which is of course you who is recording the conversation. Trust me...been down that road and had to use a couple in court before.
Pardon me, if I may

Why do I sense arrogance in you. I mean, isn't there any other way to ask your question or make a point without it sounding like that? DCD does great work, and true enough you nee to try his ROMs before you comment on no difference. I have used all his ROMs and each time there is a remarkable difference, GPS Speed, good audio, nice reception.
Youtube: If you search the forum, there are many ways to get youtube, I would suggest you tell us what type of youtube app you are trying to use because there are just so many.
As for recording calls, there are apps out there that can do this. JUst google it, and you will have more than enough to try. If there are errors, don't blame the ROM. DCD ROMS are more functional and bring less stress to the RAM than the bloated Sprint ROM.

It's not the jobs of the people on this forum to solve your problems for you. If they do, great, but you shouldn't be using an attitude that makes it seem like you think everyone on here is being paid to solve problems for you. Maybe you didn't mean this line to come across as rude but it sure seems very rude to me.
The Flash Video Bundle with TCPMP that was posted works very well for YouTube.
You could also try this cab:

You only need an SD card... nothing else. If you have an SD card you have 100% of the proper equipment. Everything can be done directly on the phone without even having a computer. You might need software to extract a .zip or .rar file at the most although it seems you're not familiar with compressed archives (zip files) so flashing your phone might be a little advanced for you. If your SD card doesn't work very well for flashing, buy a new one. They are extremely cheap for the low capacity ones which is what you need for flashing anyway.
You claim not to mean any disrespect for DCD's ROM but then you're whining about how you think there's no point to using it and why hasn't someone fixed some problem you were having when they have... I think a better attitude might make people more willing to help you.
Well put unL33T,
I would have just called this guy a douche bag and written a note-to-self to ignore all future posts by ElementalWindX, as so far every one of his 4 posts in this thread is dripping with jackassery.
I have a feeling that either method will be just as ineffective.

You do realize that many of the amazing people who develop software and ROMs for your phone do it free of charge as a hobby, right?
If you want a change log with the entire history, I recommend you go into the threads and do a lot of copy and pasting. I'm sure there are a few other people who would be appreciative if you took the effort to help out with that instead of just crying that nobody else has. Sound fair? You take, you give.
And similarly with youtube, why don't you go to hell and fix it yourself?

If you press the X-Button in the top right hand corner of this browser window it should solve all your issues.
As people have already said... We develop for free. I have a ROM, DCD does, etc... I spend countless HOURS if not DAYS ON END working on this for very little in return. I do appreciate the people that have donated but lets face in reality we do this sort of thing for free. Sooo with that being said....
If you donate a very large sum of money to me I will solve ALL your phone needs. I'm waiting for the money... Let me know when its there.
Ok, I'm still waiting, why haven't you sent it yet?
Pretty ridiculous? Yes! Just like your rants about DCD's ROM.
Also, when you get a chance can you post some of your work. Seems you are here only to get what you can and not contribute back.
Thanks for whatever it is this post was SUPPOSED to bring!
Don't get caught up in arguing with this idiot. He is just trying to get a rise out of you. He cannot possibly be as stupid as he sounds. Must be an act to try and lure us in.....

We install these ROMS because we don't like the Sprint ROM. I can't make that anymore simple. Many/Most of us try to "break" the custom roms (like DCDs) or find the bugs in them so the programmer can refine the product. Many others are here to try something new to get better performance from their phone-- again, because they don't like the Sprint ROM.

Most of the difference you dont "see" you experience. More RAM is available, the phone runs quicker and more stable. Those are the main differences you can "see" or notice.

Youtube is not something that will get fixed through a ROM. It is something that needs to be supported through software. Hence, youtubeplay, the HTC you tube application, and flash integrated web browsers.
I can't comment on the phone call recording software. I don't know anything about apps like that.
I don't see any point to this thread, if you have a question about a rom, ask it in the thread dedicated to that rom.
Also, watch the language. If you are an offending party, know that foul language is a violation of the rules here at XDA and can lead to your being banned. Remember, be respectful at all times, and if you can't do that, then don't post at all.

[Q] A simple blunt question about Vibrant GPS fixes

OK--people are talking all around this issue, and I am looking for a blunt answer. Hopefully this thread can be found easily via Google.
FACT: The GPS fix for stock Galaxy phones we all know about doesn't work for many people.
FACT: Some custom Vibrant ROMs, like Bionix, claim to have fixed the GPS issues.
QUESTION 1: Is the GPS fix in these custom ROMs the same as the one released by Samsung for the Captivate?
QUESTION 2: If not, can anyone verify the performance of the custom ROM fixes? I have seen threads on this site that suggest the GPS is even worse after using a custom ROM (including Bionix).
I am the minority it seems, but my gps is much worse after flashing Bionix 1.8 and 1.9.1. When I was stock JFD I actually created a thread complimenting my GPS.... and now it's useless. No matter how long I stay outside I can not get a lock.
I am not certain what the issue is, because some on the same ROM claim it is great. Not sure how I lost out.... and not blaming sombionix, his rom is so good I still use it even with this issue (and I consider it a big one).
I do not know enough about what he did, but I don't think much was altered from JI6.
Thanks s15274n!
I am going to do some testing...I have access to a stock Vibrant (with no GPS fix), and a stock Captivate (with recent GPS fix). I will do a "map my run" route with each (using my Nexus One and maybe even my G1 as an experiment control), then root the Vibrant with Bionix Fusion, and post my results--probably here and in a blog post. That will give me 5 separate results to compare.
The screenshots and data output should settle all the BS flying around, although I am sure that some people will claim that their particular phone has no problems whatsoever.

Just to add my two cents, I've continued to experience horrible GPS performance despite the fix in JI6. Quite simply, it's unusable if I don't open G-Maps before I drive away from my wirless SSID.
Unfortunately, questions posted here are routinely met with "reflash" and "why can't people search? these issues have been solved a million times!". Most people seem content to assume that since it was fixed on their phone, we're too stupid to figure out how to apply this particular "fix".
This is my fifth phone. My G1, MyTouch, and Nexus One all had GPS' which worked simply and reliably. My Galaxy S phones...not so much. It's gotten to the point where I'm seriously considering paying HTC to fix the busted AMOLED screen on my Nexus One so I can go back to that and sell my Vibrant and i9000 on craigslist.
Sorry for the rant. I only meant to chime in to say "you're not the only one". I'm just frustrated.
I'll be interested to see your results if you go through with your test.

N4 conversion VS LGOG based AOSP/CM/AOKP etc etc?

So what are the pros and cons.... I know about the partition. Are they any other issues with the conversion? If you came back from N4 what made you come back? Cos after the SD card, NFC and LTE fix what else was broken? Thanks in advance.

My main reason for doing the conversion was to get hybrid ROMs like Rootbox or PACman (which weren't available natively on LGOG at the time). To me, really the only pro is a larger selection of ROMs. This isn't necesarily a better selection, just bigger - it depends on what you are specifically looking for in a ROM as to whether this makes it worth it or not.
With the available fixes already posted, there really aren't any huge cons either - GPS works, camera works, you get full internal storage and external SD support. However, there were cases I ran across where I couldn't get certain fixes working with certain ROMs - things like touch key lights not working and the like. I'm sure they are fixable in these cases, it just takes someone smarter than me to figure out how.
I think the main reason the conversion is frowned upon is that there isn't a compelling, across-all-ROMs improvement or feature that would be available on a converted device that isn't available on the 'native' track. So why risk a brick monkeying with partition layouts and potentially dangerous N4 install scripts (apparently some of them flash using partition numbers rather than names, and this will kill ya dead - gotta read carefully. I never ran across one).
I had minimal issues when running converted ( I think I was running that way for 3 weeks or so maybe?? Can't remember). Most of the issues were things that were more annoyances, rather than real usage problems. However, as my main reason for converting was to get a hybrid ROM, once houstonn brought Rootbox to the LGOG natively, I decided to come back. I'm usually a little short on time, and it was getting difficult to keep up with all the LGOG threads, plus all the N4 ROM threads, plus figuring out how to fix the ROMs for use on the LGOG. It's easy here, a one stop shop for LGOG learning, if you will...
I suspect with the native 4.2.2 stuff running around here now, there will be a steady decrease in the amount of 'development' on conversion stuff - it seems quite a bit quieter now than it was a month or 2 ago. I'd rather stay where the action is, as that's usually where the little remaining issues get solved first.
FWIW, I had no issues either converting to, or back from, N4. The threads here do a good job of spelling out the process - it's just a matter of reading through them enough times to understand what is going on and what to expect at each step.
Thanks for writing up your experience... The main reason I asked this question was... Some of the (if not all of them) AOSP Roms have major issues like if GPS works something else will be broken and if something else worksworks other is broken. But I did not see that in N4 conversion. (At least to my knowledge) I'm just talking about just pure aosp Roms. ..is this a trurt statement I'm making? Thanks in advance.

I can't say for certain - most of these 'tradeoff' issues, at least from what I've seen, seem to revolve around which modem you choose to run. I believe, at the moment the only 100% no issue setup is and ICS ROM with ICS modem. I believe these issues persist whether you are on N4 conversion or native LGOG setup - but I could be wrong here.
Here's the basic breakdown - somebody correct me if I'm wrong on these, I haven't run most of these setups personally:
If you run ICS modem on JB ROM, you get broken GPS.
If you run .33 N4 modem you get good GPS and Data speeds, but occasional data drops. Also, apparently you can't make outgoing calls in LTE coverage. You can fix the data connection by toggling airplane mode. This isn't a huge issue for most people, but is for me as I use Google voice and IM apps for messaging (rather than SMS) so if I don't notice the data drop and toggle, I'm missing messages.
If you run ATT JB modem on JB ROMs you get working GPS, decent data speed, and working LTE calling. All Outgoing calls drop to a background process after initiation, so if after hitting dial you need to interact with the call, you have to open the notification drawer and then click on the call to foreground it. Does not impact actual functioning of the call. Network name is reported as 'maritime' rather than AT&T.
I think there's another N4 modem that will work with LTE (.27 maybe - somebody jump in here) so that might be another option...I haven't tried it. there is one N4 modem that breaks LTE support.
I've been almost exclusively on houstonn's RootBox since coming back to native setup - so I may have missed issues with other ROMs - I do try to keep up with all the threads though. Hopefully someone else on one of the others can chime in with other issues, if there are any, that I missed. FWIW, I have never lost GPS on my device...I'm not sure why some have and some haven't...

One stop shopping for all your radio needs.
Thanks again both of you... t I wanted to know why and I think I got what I was looking for.. Anyway, I guess I will stick with my rooted stock JB for now till some of these issues get resolved. Thanks again for all your time.

[Q] Comparison of AOSP ROMs for MDK phones

I'm trying to figure out what the most stable and functional ROM is for my MDK VZW S4. I've tried to research this several times but I find that I have to essentially read through every thread for every ROM, and even then there are things that are left out. My previous phone was a Galaxy Nexus, so I was probably spoiled by the wealth of information about the various ROMs, but there's no reason we can't have a thread like this.
History of my ROM usage with my S4
I started out with Hyperdrive ROMs but later decided I just couldn't deal with TW no matter how much work the Hyperdrive guys did try to clean it up (kudos to them for the best ROM for people stuck with a locked bootloader though!).
Next up I went to Gummy ROM to try out 4.4, which honestly hasn't really impressed me. My GPS never works right, seemingly related to the compass problem? Not sure here, but this is a major deal breaker for me.
Problems I've had and seen mentioned in multiple threads; are these fixed in ANY ROM???
The above mentioned compass problems. I've read about factory calibration issues, I'm going to try a few of those fixes, but I also see a LOT of people saying this is a driver issue? Which is it?
HDR camera doesn't work, attempting to use it just makes solid black pics.
Bluetooth audio playback problems. I've heard this mentioned many times, but haven't had a chance to test myself. This only becomes a big deal for me in the summer when I'm using this feature to stream music to the stereo on my boat.
Thanks!
Dan
