Just upgraded my phone to WM6.1 and enjoying it, but I heard something about the ability to upgrade the radio rom on the phone.
I've heard that some radio roms can increase reception, but also decrease battery life and cause some calls and messages to miss.
I'm using T-Mobile USA on my Wizard. Have there been a better radio rom that doesn't cause these issues, or should I just stay with my current radio rom?
if you have no problem with your current radio i would stick with it. read lots of posts on radio upgrading. some people get great results and some have problems.
from what i have red 2,19 seems to be the most stable.
you can always test it for yourself. all the radios are availible in the ftp server including the original t mobille usa radio
Hey Duke what rom are you using?
Official Tmobile rom with WM5 and radio 2.25.11 never missed any calls for me, as soon as i went with TNT's 6.1 latest rom, i started missing calls and voicemails. Flashed to 2.71.11 radio - same, now i applied the radio cab fix from here(post #6) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317331&highlight=tmobile+Radio+ROM (per advise of mmeyer) and testing currently. If that doesnt work - will flash to 2.19 that seems to work for most US MDA Tmobile people. Just hate to go to older radio that has much worse reception than even 2.25

Title says it all. I had tried the HTC South African ROM, and liked it, but I couldnt get the keyboard to correspond with the 8525 symbols. Searched all day and decided that it wasn't worth the minimal speed increase. Instead of going back to the ROM I had, the 1.34...ROM, I decided to go with this one since it has AKU 2.6. I am so glad I did!
I live in Queens, and 3G has NEVER worked in my house. Only certain times throughout my day I would see the U symbol on my phone. And it was in south Middle Village, not near my house. Since I upgraded/downgraded the ROM, not only do I have U in my house, but after 8 dslreports.com tests, I averaged over 800 kbps and peaked at 972Kbps! Perhaps its a coincidence that U is up and running here today, but I seriously doubt it! I also upgraded the radio to 1.20 and noticed a slightly less wait time for 'locating" in PIE. The OS seems faster as well, but not much faster, than the newer Cingular ROM. To any Cingular 8525 owners out there this ROM is definitely worth a look!
There must be a reason that they decided 3 WEEKS LATER to go back to AKU 2.3. Is there a bug in this ROM that I haven't discovered yet?
The radio upgrade is what made UMTS more accessible. The OS portion of the ROM didn't have any effect on your wireless. AKU 2.6 is reported to have problems, but I never personally tried it or tried to track them after I read MS Voice Command wouldn't work with it. There was a lot of discussion about AKU 2.6 in the Wizard forum, you might find some info there.
Did you install the newer radio code independently, or did it come with the South Africa ROM?
I noticed the increase in UMTS accessibility after upgrading the ROM. I upgraded the radio only to minimize the "locating" delay in PIE, activesync, etc. It mihgt be a coincidence, who knows.
Cyberon works fine w/this ROM. I never really cared fpr VC, it uses too much RAM and is a lot slower than cyberon IMO
The reason for the thread was to hopefully find out what the problems are that have been reported. Seemse strange that Cingular made a new ROM a few weeks after and went back to 2.3
I don't know why they went back to aku 2.3, but for the problem you where having with the keyboard, you could have solved it by installing a cab in the cingular's extrom (don't remember now exactly wich one).

Yeah, I had searched, and searched, and found one of your posts that spoke about a cab with "keypad.." in the name, but I downloaded TWO Cingular ExtROMS and that file was not in either of them. When I first installed the 1.35 ROM, I replaced its extrom with the newest Cingular extROM, to no avail. I don't mind though, I like this ROM so far and it hasn't caused any issues for me. And its Cingular-issued, so all of the settings were there for me.
I have been experiencing problems with hand-overs whilst in the 3G mode.
This started about 4 weeks ago and affects all Radio ROM's on WM5 and WM6.
What happens is that when moving from one cell area to the next, the signal is lost and the phone disconnects. One has to then force a connection again. This does not happen if the phone is set in the GSM mode.
The problem is network related and well known to Leaf Wireless.
They informed me that a WM5 upgrade would be posted at the end of this week which included the fixed Radio ROM.
They will however not be including this Radio in their WM6 upgrade to be issued at a later stage. ( To protect the sales of the comming Kaiser?)
Is this fair treatment to hand out to their loyal customers?
So your phones that were purchased from January on, will not benefit from the ugraded OEM's and fixes on the WM6 release.
I was planning on upgrading to a Kaiser, but after waiting patiently for a better ROM for sooooo long, and now this news - no chance!!
I expected better for a device costing +/- R8000 ($1,100)
As far as I know, radio firmware do not depend on the OS. You would normaly be able to extract the radio version from the WM5 rom and flash it on your WM6 device.
If they really change the way the OS interact with the radio, it is really screwed; but I am very doubtfull about it
basilrsa, are you currently on WM5 or a cooked WM6 (or maybe the official Asia one)?
I have never really experienced a disconnect problem when switching cells, but more of a "data hanging" issue, ie. it will show it is still connected, but no data is flowing. This has been on WM5 (Pre-AKU3 radio and AKU3 radio). I am currently on 1.48, and it seems much better. I see you are on Vodacom ... they have been having problems with that for a long time now

Thanks for your view, it is appreciated.
Yes, I will be able to extract the Radio from the WM5 release and flash it to my device.
The problem is that many users in SA want their warranty intact. By altering the standard ROM's they void their cover.
The point is how can they provide the new Radio with WM5 and not WM6 which they intend to release, but with a buggy Radio!

Thanks,
See my signature for my current setup (WM6 - Sleuth and Radio1.48)
The problem does exist as a new Radio attached to WM5 will be released at the end of this week.
The post above will explain why I am pi**ed off.
Regards
please post it if you manage to extract it !!!
I don't get it! I had the 2.17 rom from sprint installed- Mogul was running quickly and stable. upgraded to new official sprint rom 3 and was running a bit sluggish. Just upgraded to wm6.1 and my phone laaaaaags!
what gives? The reason why i upgraded to wm6.1 was for increased speed and stability. I have yet to read a negative review of wm6.1. Is my Mogul busted?
FWIW: clean install dcd 3.0.1via olipro 2.4 Official sprint radio3.* pre iinstalled.
I have hard reset multiple times with no difference in speed.
Everything from txt input, opening apps, switching landscape, even internet is significantly slower than sprint rom 2.17.
I can live without rev a (never saw any download difference in san diego) but i HATE lugging around my BT gps receiver. I don't want to go back to 2.17.
Please help!
Thanks guys.

Did you build your own ROM from a kitchen? or downloaded it from the links?
If you build your own there are ways to customize it to make it run faster, even have more memory.
There are some tricks to give you more glypcache on your phone to make it run faster, but you sacrifice RAM.
Thats weird. I have DCD's 3.0.1 ROM and my mogul has never been this fast before, even without Rev.A here in South Carolina! Try flashing again?
I just upgraded last night from dcd 2.31 to dcd 3.01 plus 3.35 radio.
At first, I did notice some sluggishness, but after using it for a while, the speed has returned to normal (what I was used to before upgrade).
I think that maybe after flashing, the phone needed to do some catching up, especially since I restored all my histories and text messages.
you might also try a new pagepool if you are custom cooking your rom. the last few that I have cooked have been pooled at 6 or 8 and i just cooked my recent one at 12. its much faster. Even the screen orientation and everything
PPCBackUpPro 2.5 slowed my 6.1
PPCBackUp 2.5, or whatever it's called, temporarily slowed my 6800 WAY down after I tried restoring my Messages with it (or was it Calendar). Amazing program, probably time I upgraded to 2.8 and made a donation.
However thought I'd share and see if it helps anyone else. After a soft reset or two (and not launching/auto launching PPCBackup 2.5), my DCD 3.01 was nice and snappy. I had just upgraded from stock ROM 2.09 to DCD's 3.01 prepackaged .exe
DCD 3.0.0 here, faster than ever, on par with the Alltel WM5 ROM that was unstable but FAST on my mogul.
Coincidentally, my battery life has improved about 30% as well, and I haven't dropped a call in a while (we have low reception in our office).
Nothing but good news here...
See my post in the 1.58 radio thread for some interesting findings after I ran some tests on the new 1.58 radio. Even if you've decided to leave your Athena stock, you need to make this upgrade.

bull****.
as usuall I using 1.38.00.00
I have as 3G and H (HSDPA) where my provider have a cover in this area.

wiki your help!
You prove your ignorance.
Sure the other versions support 3G/H. Ive used 1.47, 1.50, 1.57 and now 1.58 and yes they support high-speed protocols.
If you actually read my post in the other thread you would see I said that 1.58 does high-speed much faster than the other radio versions and has much higher sensitivity thresholds.
But you were too busy being self-important... and wrong ... to do that. Enjoy your far-slower radio version.
I am using 1.58 and for the first time in my athena owner life I an having really fast UPLOAD. PLUS I have 3G coverage in the same places where I had 2G before (inside my home, inside my office and it is hard to believe they changed the cell in both places at the same time).
In some other places I have HSUPA coverage too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Uplink_Packet_Access
The overall feeling is also a fast download. I think download does not start until it receives the request of the upload. That's why I noticed it right away for surfing and mail reading. I normally download only a small portion of the mail, and if I want it I click to download the rest. With previous radio, the waiting time to get the rest was noticeably longer.
It's good having someone actually measure the improvement. Thanks techntrek.
Glad to post the numbers. I would be interested in seeing numbers from others (before and after).
New all-time best speed, yesterday. Previously my best was 983 kbps. Now it is 1169 kbps.
wow.
Hi
I get a message that the file is corrupted (#270) I came to 7%, then the device resets.
Any suggestions
Hans
Try to re-download the installer.
Hi
Did that twice. Are going to try again tomorrow
Hans
Are you fully unlocked?
Hi, Still no luck. Maybe a stupied question but what do you meen about unlocked? I can use my x7500 with any "phonecompany" that I want. I donĀ“t have to use someone special.
Hans
Unless you have specifically run olipro's unlocking software you are only sim unlocked. His software takes away the remaining locks, such as the one that allows you to install non-factory roms (such as the radio rom). Look in the "hard-spl..." thread in this sub-forum.
I will do that, thanks for your help
Hans
Recently I flashed my radio from 1.50 to 1.58 and I must say it is a lot better! I get HSDPA at all times now where before it would occasionally swap between Edge, 3G and H now it stays solid H all the time and goes to Edge only where there is really no 3G available.
I also noticed that at home for example. I always got a very weak H signal, but after the upgrade I get two bars at all times, also tested with Skype, seems to run smoother and I don't get as many disconnected calls as before.
I suggest everybody should upgrade the radio, it is well worth it!
michyprima r4 radio 1.58
x7501 running michy's r4 with radio 1.58, can rec calls or mms, infact the speed is great when it works, but stability has gone way down, i've seen a lot of people using connex to go back to 1.2spl and then using 2.04d with r1.58. i was wondering if people could post what roms they are using that they see good stability with.
My SPL is 1.2 and the stock rom WM6. I see a huge performance differance with this radio over 1.50, no stability issuses at all.

AP4, no difference with older radios or this one - all stable.
Michi's V4 SPL 1.2 and 1.58. Coming from stock and stock WM6 there is a good performance increase in radio, typically at least 1 more bar wherever I am and no stability issues.
Hi
I've got a stock rom (1.72.206.3) and had the standard radio (1.66).
I've changed the radio to 2.11.50.20 to use with Android. Tried Android and not for me (thanks but no thanks).
Anyway, since changing the radio my signal quality isn't as good and so I'd like to go back to the 1.66 radio. I've searched and found the rill phone 1.66 but it comes with a warning about not using it if you're not sure as opposed to being able to flash the radio as I did to get the 2.11.
Any ideas or does anyone have the 1.66 radio in a flashable format?
Thanks
the correct radio version that is included in your rom is actually 2.09.xx and it is available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787&highlight=radio+roms
But to be honest i would think about using 2.12.50.2_02. That's what i use and i'm on O2. My signal is great and the battery life is awesome.
Thanks, I'll give them a try (2.12 and 2.09).
To be honest the battery life is ok considering the specs and the screen size, its just the change in signal quality thats annoying (for example, dropped from 3 bars at home to 1 and sometimes loses signal completely).
