Loader: 2.40
Radio: 3.39.10
ROM: DCD 3.1.2
I see lots of discussion concerning GPS and Bluetooth (BTW the 3.39.10 GPS aq. speed is awesome) but not so much about Data Connection. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right place or using the right search terms.
Not sure if I’m putting this in the right forum, but this seems to be upgrade related, and quite honestly, the caliber of posts here seems a bit higher than in the general Titan forum.
Since upgrade my Data Conn speed is a whopping 150Kb/sec. Ugh. I have tried it tethered, Bluetooth, PDANet, PAN, indoors and out. Even tested IE Mobile to http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed . Never got much above 150Kb/sec. I typically got ~600Kb/sec before I upgraded my radio.
Maybe I’m having a bad air week and pushing a low DRC, I’ll continue to test, but my question is this;
For the purposes of troubleshooting/testing, how can I tell if I’m getting an EVDO Rev A connection (I know it is available here)? Is there a way to turn off Rev A and force a 1X connection or vice-versa?
Anyone else having problems with Data Conn. Speed? I use this fairly frequently and while I am just euphoric over the GPS, I may run into a serious dilemma when professional stress demands a faster connection.
You have rev A. As for the data speeds hmm- is you phone possibly set to 1X only? To check go the the phone settings menu and under the 2nd tab it says Mode of Operation, click that
Was set to hybrid.
I tried with EVDO only. 177Kb/sec
1X gave 121Kb/sec.
Have set it back to Hybrid, icon shows 'Ev', but still not sure if it is Rev A.
Signal is strong, would hate to have to roll back to stock just to test if the problem is with the Radio. What speeds are others getting with Radio 3.39.10?
Edit- What I am thinking is that I am getting a Rev A signal and maybe it is more sensitive to SNR and dropping my rate. Thus I want to turn off Rev A to test. Then again, maybe I just don't know what I am talking about.
check your EPST settings. if RevA is ENABLED, change it to DISABLED. its a misnomer.
No such entry in EPST.
Also,

Been there, done that.
Thanks for trying.
Tried both with same speeds
Just tried both settings and the speed tests had the same results.
I'm using Radio 3.39.10 and Rom3.39.10(Sprint), have the option to enable/disable Rev-A but my speed is still 419.40 kbps. no matter which settings I choose.
what location are you in?
are u sure its one of the locations that has reva?
what radio did you have before you updated to 3.39? did you let customizations run?
I upgraded for the first time about a week ago. I initially went to Radio 3.37 and ROM DCD 3.1.2 and the VZW CAB using the SD card method. Customizations ran after the DCD ROM flash. Everything works seemingly well, other than the slow Data Connection. Yesterday I flashed to the 3.39 Radio. GPS Acquisition went from 60+ sec to < 10 sec. No change on the Data Conn.
With Stock Radio I typically received at 600Kb. Now it is 150-170Kb.
I’m in the SFO bay area, but beginning to think that Rev A is a red herring. Don’t really know much about how Rev A works, but after reading a great deal about it, connecting to a Rev A equipped station should with or without a Rev A equipped mobile should not affect the connection speed adversely. One either has a strong and clear enough signal for the higher speeds or one does not. I am connecting via EVDO, just getting really slow speed for no apparent reason.
Tigueraje reports speeds of 419.40kbps with Ev or 1x. Wish I could get even that. BTW, 1x should not go that high, so was probably connecting to Ev both times. If you truly want to check your 1x speed, try a soft reset, or at least stop and start the data conn after changing.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Hope this is safe to do on a VZW phone. My PRI Version is 1.35_002 and my GPS is rockin', but I will proceed carefully.

i cant say that its safe on vzw. that post on ppcgeeks was a telus user...
sorry if i was misleading in my last post, i thought the OP was telus.
I haven’t done anything yet. After a rush to upgrade the Titan when I first got it, and many problems afterward, I have been proceeding very cautiously. I’m not confident that the PRI update will address my issue.
I just talked to a co-worker on VZW with a Treo 700wx. He is also having problems with Data Conn speed in my area. So, I think this is just coincidental to my upgrade. I will keep tabs on it, and if I can get down to Campbell this week (a verified strong Rev A area) I will test there.
Still curious about what speeds others are seeing with the 3.39 Radio. Anyone confirm Rev A (anything over 1024Kb/sec)? On VZW?
Alltel user here, just flashed to Radio 3.39 and have gotten two different download speeds of 1045.
Thanks for the info.
Just tested in San Jose, Ca (about 15 miles from Home) and got 927Kbps. Problem must be with the tower near home and coincidental to my upgrade.
927 0.204s (1024k) myvzw.com Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) 320x320; VZW; UTStar-XV6800; Window Mobile 6.1 Professional;
To clarify REV-0 VS REV-A
The download speeds you see when looking at EVDO will not be majorly different, it is the upload speeds that REV-A is most meant to address. REV-0 theoritical download speed is 2.4 mbps, and upload is 153.6kbps and this is shared bandwidth. REV-A is 3.5 down and 1.8mbps up. A DOM module will take from 1 to 4 T1s in and at the moment most VZW sites are running only 1 and some are running 2, so with a max BW of 1.54 mbps on a T1, you will not ever see the max download speeds of REV-A until 3 T1s or more are at the site, and like I said it is the upload that will be most different.
I'm not sure if this happens on verizons rom or not because i always flash all my xv6800s to DCDs newest rom and im using the newest radio and the newest bootloader and also i built the kitchen with the verizon cab and mms cab built in as oems and mms, phone calls, gps, internet, data connections, and everything works perfect except one thing
I noticed that my phone switches to 1x whenever i make a call even if i set the phone to use evdo only and i know i have a good enough evdo signal because other phones stay on evdo fine and my laptops have mini-pcie EVDO rev a cards and they are set to EVDO only and they work fine
probally doesnt matter but my laptops all have mini-pcie novatel EVDO Rev-a cards on sprint and my cell phones use verizon and they all stay on evdo fine and the xv6800s stays on EVDO during data connections its just whenever i make a call or send/recieve sms messages it switches to 1x
That's completely normal. Voice is always handled by the 1xRTT (1X) network. EvDO only handles the data component. Nothing wrong with what you're seeing.
The Telecom New Zealand phones are the same where Telecom's WM5 seem to use EvDO alright but with all the new ROMs data always revert back to 1X
I think you need to do some reading on CDMA technology and how it works.
1xRTT = Voice/SMS
EVDO Rev 0/A = Data/MMS
It's always been like that, always will (until LTE is rolled out).
I mean, it's right in the name for pete's sake....EVDO...Evolution DATA ONLY.

IU have the same problem, I have sent it in to telecoms repair agent and have told them the evdo isn't working, I am waiting to find out what the will do when they find my phone has wm 6.1 on it.
If you get no joy out of telecom the WM5 ROM has been uploaded to PPCGEEKS but you will also need to rollback you Radio as that file doesn't have the radio only the ROM

Understood but EVDO will alway revert back to 1X if it can not get a steady connection, that appears to be what is happening. I'm talking about Data connections (I am only speaking about myself)
Anyone use tethering to download too much data and had repercussions from T-Mobile? I'm just wondering if/how much I should limit my bandwidth use. Use tethering frequently on the train and such.
After 5gb of data you will likely get throttled to EDGE-only speed. You will receive a message from TMO if this happens. If you are just checking email, chat, facebook, etc it is highly unlikely you will kill your 5gb.
I just recieved the text message yesterday and I have to say the speed that they throttle you down to renederd my laptop practically useless. Even just trying to log into Yahoo my browser timed out. Just FYI.
How much bandwidth did you use? I was up to 2.3 gigabyte last month.

its not even EDGE speeds. more like a little bit better than GPRS speeds around 50-59kbps. my edge speeds is almost triple this and my 3g speeds peak at 5.3mbps at night and 3-4mbps during day
to OP- Tmobile used to allows 10GB of bandwidth but now its cut to half to 5GB which can be easily used up by tethering, but then again tethering using USB in settings, MobileAP, or an app like EasyTether and PDAnet is not covered in the contract and actually goes against the terms of use
Of course, most probably already know tethering is expressly forbidden by the terms and conditions for most (if not all) contracts with TMO. While they've cast a blind eye to in the past, this is changing.
Beginning Nov 3, TMO will offer a $15 Tethering option which is less expensive than other carriers. Each activated IMEI (phone serial) will get no more than one IP address. All tethered data will count toward your 5GB monthly limit. Like other carriers, your monthly data cap doesn't increase just because you pay more. Unlike other carriers though, you will NOT be charged overage fees unless perhaps you somehow manage to tether without a proper plan in place.
The DHCP pool which currently assigns / allows acquiring of the additional addresses for any tethered devices that you may be using will be limited to just "one" address. In order to tether after this change, you'll require a minimum of 2 IP addresses. This limitation will only be officially lifted upon adding a monthly paid tethering plan to your account. Being rooted or on an unoffical rom likely won't change this as it'll all be controlled by the TMO's network hardware which is out of our reach.
Update to reply to the post by 2000nits below...
That assumes that TMO won't modify the normal operation it's APN gateway to prevent Private DHCP then tethering as we know it might not be possible. Then, you'd be forced to get your addresses from their DHCP server alone.
Yeap . this is a sad sad day for tmob...
I am going to look for a better carrier ./ option
I can get Virgin mobile wifi unlimited , and someone else cheaper for the phone
You think they will send a notice to all users with a 'Change of Terms' letter enclosed???
Also, does anyone know how to monitor my usage?? How do I know how much data I've transfered thus far in my billing cycle??

You can monitor usage with netcounter in market. Free and I have been using it since g1.

As long as tethering still works like it did with usb tethering on cyanogen roms we do not get 2 ips from the carrier. Your phone gets 1 ip address from carrier and then acts as a router giving you private ip addresses that your carrier does not see. Same as you home ISP does not give out multiple ip addresses if you have multiple PCs at home conneted to a router.
Conclusion: Pay tmo $15/mo extra or root and do it for free (at your own risk). I have done it since the g1 days but very rarely, never had a prob.

^ This. I don't see how t mobile could track that you are tethering. Your phone requests the data, than transfers the data to the device you are tethering just like a router. The "outside world" only ever sees your router, or phone in this case. Unless I am misunderstanding the way tethering works.

AFAIK, an APN is required for tethering to work. The carrier controls this. Without APN access and one that plays nice with tethering apps, tethering may become impossible with existing tethering / wifi router apps?
Tethering Via Kies or Tethering Via Dial-Up Connection
Currently you can easily tether via Samsung Kies or by creating a dial-up connection. How will these two options change?
How would T-Mo know you are tethering via keys or dial-up connection?
I do have Kies and I've set up dial-up tethering, it works, however I have internet everywhere I go, so I never have really tethered other than just testing to see if it works. I think it is a shame though, people who abused tethering kinda ruined it for everyone. Now if you need to tether in an emergency, which in my case would be maybe like once a year or something, now the option is closed to everyone? Maybe they can create an emergency tethering plan. You pay for the 1 time you need to tether. I dunno.
*dial-up isn't really dial-up in the sense you may be thinking like in the old modem dial up days.
I have Froyo running from SD card on TP. I'm on a old retention family plan with unlimited txt, data etc at evdo speed. When I use the phone it shows
3g as the speed connection. Per the Sprint CS reps, my "plan is not compatable" with the new phones offered and I will need to get a new plan (ie.. everything $69) to be able to use a newer phone with the faster data speeds. (I know this is BS). My question to all of you is;
1. If my phone is using the 3g network, can sprint find out the actual data speed my phone is using?
2. If they do find out I'm using the faster data network that my plan doesn't offer, what will/can they do to me for it?
Sorry if this is a lame question but I don't want to give up my old plan and do enjoy using Froyo on my TP. Once I can afford a more expensive plan I'll probably go with the EVO or what ever comes after it.
Come on everyone. 100 views and no replys? I want to continue to use Froyo on my Touch Pro but don't want to get burned by Sprint for using their 3g network when all I'm contracted for is evdo. Any one have a clue? Thanks.
I have the same issue, old retention plan with unlimited data included, but "incompatible" with newer phones. I have been testing out xdandroid builds for a few months now without any issues related to billing. I don't think sprint can tell.
It's conceivable that Sprint could monitor their data network watching for Android activation requests from "non-Android" phones (various GSM carriers have been known to do this).
But, to the best of anyone's knowledge, they don't. I've run a Vogue with Android for almost a year (and briefly run Froyo on my Touch Pro) without issue, and so have countless others.
The "speed" thing is a moot point - there are even dumbphones with EV-DO.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Sprint doesnt have 3G, they have EV-DO. 3G is a GSM speed format. Also, i doubt unless you are pulling down 5gigs of data a month they would even say anything. At that point it would be apparent that you are tethering. I routinely pull down 500megs + with normal browsing. Never been asked anything.
CDMA 3G is typically known as EVDO rev A, and common among most phones these days.
the actual data rate you pull is throttled by your carrier, and not controlled by your phone.
tethering is typically discovered due to a registry setting specifically forcing a new data connection for the tethered device separate from the phone data.
They probably can but they wont bother with you unless you are a top tear data user.
I have an att&t lgog and the other day my service was cancelled. I took a trip to radio shack and got the net 10 $50/month unlimited plan, had them activate it with the included microsim, and I'm good to go now. my only question is about the modems we have available. my data connection drops every so often now and sometimes web pages in chrome hang and require a refresh to load up. being on net 10, which I'm pretty sure still uses at&t towers(?) am I able to use any att radios we have?
