I've tried 3.37.75, 3.42.40, and 3.42.50 and I have had the best reception/signal strength with 3.42.40. I had sat's jumping around with .50 and 3.37.75 seems to be ok with reception and signal. Has anyone else had heat issues with .40. I flashed to it again a few days ago and even in standby mode my phone is HOT. Battery life isn't as good. I flashed back to 3.37.75 and the heat and battery issue is gone. Does anyone have an idea why .40 causes my phone to stay hot all the time?
thx

I don't have that issue with .40, so I'm not sure what's causing it. I've been using .40 for the last couple months.
I had that issue with .50, so went to .40 and haven't had that problem. Never did find out what caused it.
Isn't it obvious? These ROMs are HOT HOT HOT!
Only thing i have heard was when running skyfire sometimes the battery will get hot. Have not had this issue myself but a friend did and it was just on a stock alltel 6800.

I agree with the reception but never had a heat issue. From other posts on this thread and from what I have learned about the individuality of these phones it doesn't surprise me that some do see issues with certain radios in regards to heat while others don't.
But now that I think about this my phone was a bit cooler with 3.37.75 radio, but also the ROM was different. When I ran the 3.37.75 radio the phone was updated with the MR1 update from VZW with a stock bootloader. I thought the little extra heat I felt between the MR1 radio was due to the OS portion of the ROM and not so much the radio. I could be wrong and if I was then I could confirm your symptoms. I am going to run 3.37.75 radio for a while and see if the phone is cooler. THis is going to be a subjective test unless anyone can tell me if there is a temp monitor app I could use? I know i can check the batter using some nueTools but how about the phone itself, any thoughts?
I had all kinds of problams with .50 I went back to .40 and now everthings back to normal. Heat and battery was the two main problams I had with .50 and not .40

Ok I ran Radio 3.375 and here is what I noticed
The reception for voice seems just as good as 3.42.40
The GPS doesnt make a difference when using aGPS
data seemed faster on radio 3.37.75 but not 100% sure as I didint test it.
I did notice that the phone stayed notable cooler with radio 3.37.75. ITs odd but I guess different radios could just use varying amounts of power causing the battery to heat up more or less. That would be my guess.
Anyone else have any input?
I'll chime in, though I'm not certain with anything helpful. I've had reception problems at my home because of hills and tower placement issues (snooty neighbors block ugly towers, but ***** about reception..... go figure) and 3.42.4....5 have been the clearest I've heard at my home.
As for heat, I use a variety of charger cables in various sites related to my job. Some USB cables, it seems, generate more heat. I ditched a car charger that seemed too warm also.
My thoughts are that HTC puts lots more effort into quality control of a $$$ device than cable manufacturers do into ¢¢¢ cables, though I'm certain many of you guys are seeing heat issues from different radios on the same cable. Shrug. That's not been my experience.

Thanks to all for the input. I've decided to stay with the 3.37.75 radio. tntopspin, I have extreme heat issues without cables plugged into it and the screen off. Everything seems to be working with 3.37.75 so I'm staying put for now. I can't explain it but I switched back again since this post and everytime .40 is on my phone for whatever reason it's HOT.
Once again thanks for the input.

Hi guys, I finally sorted my issues with the disappearing radio, but now it seems I have another issue.
Starting 2 days ago my battery just started draining like crazy, I'm lucky to get an hour or 2 of use out of the thing.
I noticed when I plug it in to charge it it takes forever and the device gets extremely hot. The battery is so hot you can almost burn yourself when you touch it. Maybe its just my imagination, but it seems to swell slightly when it gets very hot as well.
Obviously I have stopped using my device as I am worried about the battery catching fire after all the Lion battery issues lately.
Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this? Is the battery covered by any type of warranty?
I'm sure I need a new battery and I'm hoping that will fix the issue, hopefully its not some internal problem that is causing it to overheat.
Thanks in advance,
-Kai
Have you backed up your device and hard reset to rule out any software issues? I've run into this before, and there was something running on my device that cause the battery to drain VERY quickly. Never figured out what it was, but after a hard reset and reinstall, everything was fine.
I've had similar issues since putting black 3.01 on, draining anyway, not overheating as yet. I have stopped the battery draining by instaling Daniel Herrero's Bandswitch and setting it to gsm during the day, it seems to switch between gprs and hsdpa more frequently now with 3.01 which drains the battery enormously. Havent done a hard reset yet though.
you should feel my battery after tethering for hours, sigh....
Hmmm, mine spends half the day tethered at work, no heat issues thus far (apart from one time I left it under my pillow (too much Jack) and the heat woke me up (Not a great way to ease into a hangover)). I only ever have battery drain issues.
Yeah I dont think its a software issue as I have done several hard resets, and tried it with a couple of different Rom's and radio's, with no other software installed.
As for the 3g draining the battery, I have my phone set to only use Quadband, not UMTS or 3G.
I'm hoping to pick up a new battery tomorrow and maybe that will solve my problem.
I wonder if I might be able to get a new battery for free from HTC? I'm going to send them an email and see what they say.
-Kai
same problem here
Hey invictive,
i have the same problem, and am also thinking about buying a new battery. plz let me know how the new battery work.
thx
I've just had the same problem. It was red hot in my belt clip & bat low warning.
Mines only 3 months old, been fine until now.
There were a lot of apps running incldung camera & wifi.
I'm going to charge again & close all apps, see if its ok.
had the same problem with my first tytn. called htc support (germany) and they told me that this behavior is not normal (obvious)
i recieved a free replacement, allthough i had to send in my tytn and not only the battery.
edit:
it was even worse with wifi turned on...
My battery seems to be draining very fast now. I don't know if it has to do with me down grading my Radio from .50 to .40 last night or what. I had the phone on the charger and then I took it off the charger to run to the store. I had it off the charger for like 20 minutes and 25% of the power was gone. Is that normal? I used the internet browers for maybe 3-4 minutes and that's it.
Then later I had my phone plugged into the charger and I was talking on it while it was in the charger for maybe an hour or so and the battery went down to like 35% power left or drained like 65%. I went to do something on it while I was talking on it and it powered off!! So, I'm not sure what the deal is anymore. Thanks!
well obviously something is either running in the background without you knowing about it and/or your battery needs to be replaced.
So old is your unit/battery?
Do you have BT on? BT is the number one drainer of batteries
Do you have WiFi on?
Well, I think I got it at the end of the December, and then I think I had everything replace in January. Yes, BT is on and WiFi is off. I'm pretty sure nothing is running in the background.. Thanks.

i recently found that S2U2 was draining my battery when activsync was running. i just upgraded to the newest s2u2 and the problem was fixed.
I found that my battery drained very quickly when I installed the .50 radio, but is better after I installed .40. Seems opposite to what you experienced.

Same issue here. I upgraded to S2U2 1.18 only to fine it had made my battery life terrible. Going back to 0.99c immediately fixed my problem.
Does it happen even after a soft reset? If it were any software issue, a soft reset should fix it and your battery life should go back to normal once you come back.
Have you done anything with the GPS other than upgrading the ROM and radio? I know if the GPS is constantly searching for satellites, that'll drain your battery ridiculously quick.

Same situation here with DCD 3.2.6 Went to .40 radio and all is well. I think GPS works faster but this may be my imagination.
to the OP: check that you don't have "Receive all beams" enabled. I did and by battery barely made it through the morning, after I disabled the Beam, my battery usually lasts the day.
Install the free acbpowermeter. It will show you a visual plot of milliamps over time. It won't identify the culprit directly, but it should help you figure it out.
Yes, well my battery lasts like for one hour or maybe two with me hardly using it at all. It's crazy.
I don't have S2U2 installed that I know of. I didn't install it manually unless it comes as one of the options in the Kitchen. I pretty much install everything in the Kitchen that's not a duplicate version of something. So, that's not my problem unless it's installed some how without my knowing it. Thanks.

Well, I don't know. I haven't tried the soft reset, but I turn the phone off all the time because of other issues I'm having with MMS and SMS messeging, keyboard delay, icons dissappearing, etc. that's also driving me crazy. I"m going to update that issue in another thread after this. Maybe that has something to do with this problem?
Keyboard Buffer Delay

I did do everything in this thread about GPS here:
I think I got it working! VERY FAST VZW GPS LOCK!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=417412
Could something there have something to do with it? Could it be something to do with QuickGPS software? Thanks!

OK, I can try it but if I'm not running any software I don't see how it could help me unless I play with stuff to see what happens.. Maybe turn stuff off, etc. when it's draining really fast. Thanks.

My Phone's pretty warm, never experienced this from a cell phone before. A guesstimate would be it's 15-20 degrees over ambient. Normal?

Sounds like the CPU is running full blast. Soft Reset usually fixes it.
Yeh battery is dieing fast, very fast, 20% a hour so far O_O
this same thing happened to me two days ago and i was so freaked out. even a soft reset doesnt fix. I switched ROMs but i think a hard reset will fix it
For me it was a soft reset. I had just loaded 21725 and went on the road using ATT Navigator. The Fuze got HOT and discharged at a furious rate...20% per hour or more. When I got to destination I soft reset, (turned off GPS as no longer needed), and did a car charger trick. It worked and did not repeat even though I used the gps again.

The Touch Pros or Fuzes are notorious for running hot if the GPS chip is being used.

Or wireless for that matter. If I leave my wireless on while charging it can get really hot
mine was getting hot enough to shut down and burning through the battery faster than the charger could replinish it
Mine would get very hot using BT when I had MSVC installed. Now I use ROMS w/o MSVC, and the only time it runs warm is using ATT Navigator. I solved that problem as well with creative use of dental floss and a big paper clip to secure it to a vent while running the air conditioning ;P
I haven't come across anyone else having temp issues using MSVC, but in my experience using a dozen different ROMS or so, it has always caused my phone to run hot - and I don't like hot electronics.
Out of curiosity, anyone else hold the same opinion of MSVC?
Not MSVC alone, but the more processes running from start up like MSVC then of course the harder the processor works which equals heat. Add multiple processes with Wifi, 3G connection, & GPS or any number of other processes with the heat from the LCD & it'll heat up quickly.
Unless I am using the net, I usually force GSM or Edge mode. Battery lasts longer & unit stays cooler.

Thanks GSLEON3,
Now you've done it. The monkey on my back wants more!
Must... Flash... Test... Voice... Control... MUHUHAHAHA
I suppose it's worth checking out and seeing what exactly "enhanced" means for myself. If I can control the temp, I'll like using it.
Hey guys, I was recently testing different android GPS apps (copilot and sygic so far ) and I noticed my phone warm up noticably upon running those apps with GPS on. I tried flashing to a KH3 modem firmware (as suggested by some members of these forums) but that did not change the behavior. I tried two different programs and it overheats in both. Is this normal behavior? !
It is kinda normal.
Sometimes it gets a little better when using another modem but not really much better.
Good luck
Dip
It's actually two problems.... the heat and the rate at which it drains when its hot... I went down from 91% to 55% in a 1.5 hour trip with nothing but GPS on..
1) Modem has nothing to do with GPS.
2) Yes, normal for phone to get hot when you use CPU/GPU intensive apps, tho this might be a rom/kernel issue. I find mine doesn't get above high 20's C when using GPS for a while. Do you find the phone heats up a lot when you use other CPU/GPU intensive apps ?
3) And yes, GPS does drain a helluva lot of juice. Best thing you can do is get a car charger & plug the phone in while you're using GPS to offset the drain. Is losing 36% over 1.5 hrs of GPS use normal ? I don't know that there is a 'normal' so far as drain is concerned (it's variable). I guess other people might be able to give you a better idea of that than me, or you could try other roms & see if you get similar results with those.
Anyone else had a similar experience?
For the heating problem, you should try speedmod kernel, or phenomenal.
And if you have any doubts about the battery drain, take a look at, let say, a Garmin GPS device. Unplugged they don't last more than 3 hours. And they have an awful resolution, a tiny processor, don't use network, and a dedicated OS.
So I just flashed the latest firmware 3.14 ICS, with the radios 1.22.10.0421r/1.22.10.0424 I am s-on and unlocked. I like many other people am having heat issues by just simply having 3g or wifi on. I haven't seen my phone get aboe 108 F but this still seems abnormal. I am also running Clean rom. I thought the latest ICS was supposed to fix some of the heat issues? Is it possible for me to flash the old ICS radios to see if that fixes it? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks in advance.

"Some people feel that the 3.13.607.5 kernel gave better battery and cooling than the latest kernel." post 2 cleanrom thread
Fairly sure that while S-on, you cannot flash radios except as part of a RUU. And while S-on, you can only move forward with RUU versions, but not backwards, even for these incremental ICS leaks. Have to do S-off to roll back.
Thats how I got the radio (RUU) and I've scoured every temperature thread concerning the rezound on google and found that while charging 100F is pretty normal. I know my old phone (evo 3d) never even came close to that but this a different phone blah blah blah.... fair enough. I just did some tests and my battery got to 108 while charging and streaming netflix for 20 minutes over 3g with low brightness. It got to about 106 with full brightness and doing the same test over wifi. Is that normal for everyone?? Thanks again.
That's normal, if you hit 120 you can worry.

I'm not sure thats normal... the ONLY time I ever see temps that high is when I'm using my phone while I'm outside. (Ambient outside temp in AZ is around 100*F+ right now)
Things I see that contribute very significantly to heating my phone, biggest to smallest contributor:
1) AC charging.
2) Sustained use of weak 4g signal.
3) Sustained use of weak 3g signal.
4) Heavy processor usage. (gaming or high clock speed)
I have my phone AC charging right now trying to hold onto a -85 to -90 dBm 3g signal all the time here at home. On 3.14 firmware running Newt's XxX RLS 1. Thus the kernel isn't underclocked and behaves like interactive or on-demand governor, and runs aggressively.
Sooooo I'm seeing 115-120 degrees Fahrenheit easy when charging and on XDA, not even gaming.
The warning level is 120 degrees; I would be mindful of usage behavior past 105, and only be concerned if it goes above 105 *routinely* even with only moderate use, off charger and on a reasonable signal.
when I am indoors and using my phone, or if its charging and tethering 3G to my tablet, it usually hovers right around 95*F. Like I said, I've seen mine get up to 110-120, but ONLY when the ambient temperature is over 100 outside and I'm also using my phone outside (or in the car, on my bike, etc)
So i fiddled with some settings and set the radio to lte only when I'm in a 4g area and cdma only for anywhere else and it seems to make a big difference. I'm guessing the heat came from weak signal or constantly.searching for 4g. Either way I'm much much happier now. Glad I made the switch from sprint
