Free storage after installation of Apps - P3400 ROM Development

Hi,
Gene Geeks, a query, a bit complicated may be, but what should be the minimum amout of storage kept free for smooth operation of Gene (after installation of apps and restoring PI ofcourse) ? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance and waiting for feedback.

I guess 6-7 MB would be enough. That will be needed for phonebook, emails, messages etc.

MsgQueue Map File Microsoft Status Message SMS Protocol

Hello all,
i have around 10 Files with the name above in my XDA some of them with a size of 260k and some with 1,65Mb. What are they good for or where are they from.
I can´t delete them and I don´t see them in the memory usage.
regards
miba
Huge MsgQueue.. files in Windows directory
I have the T-Mobile Pocket PC with just the built-in 32MB of RAM (256MB SD card on order...)
In my case there are a bunch of MsgQueue-blah-blah files in the Windows directory, 7 of which are 1.65MB each. Plus a 3.83MB file called "rsupgrade.cp64". That's about 15MB.
Unfortunately I don't have an answer, only an additional question... hopefully someone can answer us both.
Are these eating into my RAM or am I seeing files from ROM? I suspect RAM since they change periodically. Are they critical or can I delete them? If the latter, is there a way to limit their size or prevent them from reappearing?
T-Mobile Customer Care level-3 support was relatively clueless as usual, but they did suggest that I could do the following to determine how critical those files were:
1. Perform a backup
2. Do a hard reset
3. Check and see if the offending files went away
4. Restore from backup
If the files went away, then supposedly you should be able to delete them yourself if/when they reappear later. But realize that's just the CC guy's theory, and he didn't sound too sure of himself. I'm sure the regulars in this forum could provide a much more intelligent analysis.
Any help?
Thanks.
(some?) T-Mobile MDA's have an rsupgrade as part of ROM, as they perform a phone upgrade as part of a ROM upgrade. Which has really surprised a few people with the 'wrong' phone (900/1800 as opposed to 900/1900) as they then had to struggle to get phone functionality back.
You can try deleting the file, it no longer serves a purpose after the phone is upgraded. But if it won't delete, I would suspect it's in ROM, and in that case it's not bothering you.
Odd
Emboldended by your advice (Peter Poelman) I prepared to delete the rsupgrade file by first backing up through ActiveSync. However, after doing so, the offending file was gone. Stranger yet, I don't think I reclaimed any memory as a result... (hadn't recorded "before" amount yet - was going to do that after backup. But I think I would notice a 4M difference)
Well, either way, that's one down... Could you (or someone) comment on the MsgQueue* files? They all seem to be SMS related. How MicroSoft could justify allocating nearly *half* of the unit's available ram for some SMS caches is beyond me... Well, for M$ I guess it's not surprising, given the alleged unholy alliance between M$ and the RAM industry.
these files are actually in ROM, not RAM but it's impossible for the end user to know that from the properties of the file. Likewise, according to microsoft, those files are not reporting what is actually being used, it may say 1.7megs but it's not really. Per MS, do not try to delete these files as doing so would render the device broken. I think they have to do with the messaging portion of the PPCPE.
Thanks
Useful info, thanks.

qtek1010, data and screen questions

Hi,
I am new to the world of PDA and just got my first one - a qtek1010, I hope someone can help me with the following questions:
1. Is there a way to make files, Inbox, Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks reside on my SD card instead of the memory? If possible, I feel it would be a lot safer for my data; this is assuming that with a full reset data on the SD card will not be lost.
2. Is it possible to rotate the screen of the qtek1010 90 ? It would be much easier to read and serf the Internet on a wider screen.
Thanks for your help.
:?

what is this file, an why am I so mad

ok, i was reading sum1 else's thread, about a memory leak....they were talkin about notifications, but i can easily just delete those.
my problem is a file called : "MsgQueueDataFilMicrosoft Raw SMS Protocol (receive only)" I have 7 of them and they are each 2784k!
and also sum called MsgQueueMapFileMicrosoft Text/ WDP/ wcmp/ etc etc SMS Protocol
and the are 7 in total also, and are 262k each
what r they, wut r they 4, and why are they so big, and how can i get rid of them, or should i evenwant to?...all i know is not too long ago, i had more available memory
NO ONE....NOTE EVEN A COMMENT
Hi ...
even if youdon't have clear description for the content of those files, but you should notice that they will be there even after a hard reset. This means they are CE system files and were not just created by corrupted s/w.
Up my my information, they are to handle the messaging services for different streams (SMS, windows messaging, e-mails, ... etc).
if you still bothered with space issue, why don't u get bigger RAM or SD card ?????
CAN U DO ME A FAVOR, AN TELL ME THE SIZE OF UR FILES AN HOW MANY OF THEM U ACTUALLY HAVE??
I KNOW THEM FILES ARE NEEDED....BUT THE FACT THAT THEY GOT BIGGER IN SIZE IS BUGGING ME, OR MAYBE THEY WERE ALWAYS THIS SIZE, AN SUM OTHER PROG IM NOT AWARE OF IS TAKING UP MY SPACE
I WAS KINDA OF INTERESTED IN A RAM UPGRADE, BUT THEN I FIGURED, IF IMA DO THAT, ILL JUST GET THE I-MATE, OR THE i700...ANY WAY I DO HAVE A SD CARD, BUT I WANTED TO FREE UP AS MUCH POSSIBLE MEM FOR RUNNING PROGRAMS
THANX
they are the same on every device and have constant size
7 pairs: 2.71 MB and 262 KB
Most likely they are sort of swaping pages.
The don't actually consume any space. Don't worry about it.

WM 6.1 Stock (look-a-like) ROM for NEW GENE (P3400 and P3400i with S/N HT8xxx)

Hi Friends,
First of all, let me tell you that this is NOT MY ROM. I've found it on the 4PDA forum so i am sharing it with you guys.
IMPORTANT INFO : THIS ROM IS FOR NEW P3400 and P3400i with S/N HT8xxx. I DONT KNOW IT WORKS ON OLDER P3400 OR NOT. NOR I HAVE EXTENSIVELY TESTED IT ON MANY DEVICES. I AM RUNNING IT ON A P3400i with ONBL 1.17.000 and SPL 1.07.Oref.
The Good:
1. This is a Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM with all default features of Windows Mobile 6.1 including the new welcome center etc along with a few HTC customizations.
2. You have about 43 MB of free User Memory after installing this ROM and about 19-20 MB of free RAM.
3. Device runs very fast when compared to the Stock WM 6 ROM.
4. Quiet fast boot up time.
5. The ROM doesn't have any customizations from the creator, ie. It has default boot screen, default About screen etc.
6. No EDGE related problems and No Control Panel icons missing. (This is a problem with lomlom's fusion 9.0 ROM)
The Bad :
1. I doesn't include HTC HOME, although this may not be quoted as a problem. HTC Home hogs quiet a lot of memory than the individual Messaging, Date, Calander and Task plugins.
2. Task manager incuded in the ROM is quiet old one.
3. As with most WM 6.1 ROMs, Windows Live is not working.
Download it from HERE if you have a 4PDA.com account (This is the original location of ROM where i found it: http://4pda.ru/forum/dl/post/132256/ruu_signed.rar
Else download it from here (I uploaded it on 4Shared for people who dont have a 4PDA account) : http://www.4shared.com/file/76614292/60fceda7/WM61_Stock.html
Sorry for not posting any screenshots but believe me, there is nothing special to post as screenshot. Its a very plain, WM 6.1 ROM.
In my opinion, if this ROM had got Windows Live Working, i can definetly quote it as the most wonderful and simplest Windows Mobile 6 ROM for P3400 and P3400i. But sadly enough, Windows live isn't working even after appying fixes and updates. So i guess i'll have to live with the browser version of hotmail.
For users who need MSN messenger functionality can try out Fring, search for it on google. Its a free, multi protocol messenger supporting Yahoo!, GTalk, MSN, AOL and others.
Also for task management features, I would recommend using HomeScreenPlusPlus plugin. Download it for free from this forum.
Enjoy!
UPDATE: I would also recommend reading Post #6 for knowing about my experiance about the ROM after customising it fully.
Thanks a lot for posting the same, here.
Just a couple of doubts, may be silly.
You have stated the following:
2. You have about 43 MB of free User Memory after installing this ROM and about 19-20 MB of free ROM
I guess, it is 19-20 MB free RAM, right?
Secondly, does this ROM contain Touch FLO, pre-installed?...
And finally, how is the file/directory browsing compared to lomlom's ROM?

Yeh, the word is RAM. I've corrected that in my post.
File browsing os working perfectly. i have installed quiet many apps and still the windows folder is opening within 3-5 seconds.
No it does not have TouchFlo installed, it even doesn't have HTC home. Thats why there is so much free space. Its a very plain WM 6.1 ROM with all the features of WM 6.1 but very few customizations.
In fact, to tell you the truth, i dont miss Touch FLO coz it was a memory hogger. And now since it doesn't have HTC home built-in, i have installed HTCHome_1025_721_ALL.cab which is the 6 tab version of the HTC home. The 6th tab contains the music controller which can be used to play music using audio manager right from the HTC home screen.
The only problem this ROM has got is Windows Live! Thats it! I have searched a lot for a fix but haven't found any working one yet.
@ANKIT360 : Buddy as far as i have found out, the problem with Windows Live is connected to two things :
1. The original Windows Live that came in this ROM has some registry keys missing. For example, under HKLM\Services\Windows Live\Platform, the Transport key is missing.
2. There must be some problem with certificates etc that are causing Windows Live to not being able to communicate using SSL(Secure Socket Layer). WIndows Live uses SSL for communication purposes.
Maybe this information help somebody in finding a fix.
Thanks For sharing Man I am Going to try it tonight
Thanks a lot & keep Going
@swapnil_0081: My Pleasure man.
My Experiance with the ROM till now
UPDATE: Did about 25 different experiments with around 11 cabs, changing connections settings and installing different certificates. No avail, Windows Live and Messenger stuck at startup. Now i am not doing any more tries, even deleted the shortcuts to Live and Messenger from Start Menu.
Software i installed:
1. 6 Tab HTC Home plugin and HomeScreen Plus Plus for Today Plugins. HomeScreen Plus Plus also doubles as an always available task switcher and task manager. I needed this functionality very much as the HTC Taskmanager 2.0 is not included and task management is not possible from home screen without the HomeScreenPlusPlus plugin.
2. Mundu IM for muti protocol messaging, its paid but its great. It can connect to all the chat services and can do things that Fring cannot do, for example, adding new messenger friends.
3. WM5Storage for Mass Storage Mode
4. Resco File Explorer and GFinder+ for managing files.
5. TCPMP, YouTube, Nitrogen (Great Audio Player!), Flash Player 7, Flash Lite 2.1 and Real Player for Multimedia.
6. Opera 8.60 and Opera Mini 4.2 (Mini has great browsing speed with full website browsing, normal Opera is great for other stuff)
7. Yahoo Go! and Google Maps for maps and positioning.
7. iContact BERT Edition for finger scrolling Contacts, PCMImageViewer for Touch friendly Image Viewer and PCM Keyboard .14 for touch friendly keyboard.
8. Advance Config, FDCSoft TaskMgr 3.1, ClearTemp, PIMBackup, psShutXP, SoftKey (for changing functions of both softkeys on Today screen) and SKTools for system tweaking.
9. FDCSoft StartMenu for desktop Windows like cascading menu. Requires very less resources and normal start menu remains accessible as well. PointUI Home as an alternate shell.
10. Misc Software including FlashSMS (for sending SMS which show up directly on screen instead of going into inbox), CHMReader (for reading e-books in CHM format), Picsel Browser (A great E-book and document Reader), PocketRAR 3.8, SQL Server CE 3.5 with Query Analyzer (Databases can be created directly on device), VSPainter Lite (MS Painbrush like APP), Wordnet CE (Pocket Dictionary with a huge word database of 66 MB), Gerald Caller Location (It shows the network name and area name of person that is calling or being called, for India only) and OBEXinfo (changes the location to recieve files via bluetooth to SD Card.

With such a comprehensive list of software installed, i have about 28 MB User space free, and 16-18 MB of RAM free after 10 minutes of system startup with HTC Home, Homescreen plus plus, Tasks and Appointment plugins running. And with default caching, FileSystem performance is good, Windows folder opening within 5-7 seconds of taping
Isn't is amazing guys! This ROM is quiet good, much better than others.
So far only 3 problem i have identified :
1. Windows Live (The hotmail part, messenger part is solved with Mundu IM) not working.
2. In the Encryption option in System Tab of Settings, the checkbox remains always checked although files are not being encypted (In other words, using encryption is not possible, but people dont use it anyways, mostly).
3. An Old version of task manager with no Today screen task management support is given. This could be solved by using th task manager or HomeScreen plus plus which is better due to the fact that it can be accessed anytime to switch between applications

In short, i will recommend this ROM to everyone who wants to use WM 6.1 with faster device response. A little bit of tweaking, some software and a 2-4 GB of good quality memory card will make your gene as closely feature rich as other costly phones.
PHEW! Long Post! Sorry guys if you get bored from this post. But i wanted to share my experiance in detail with everyone.

First of all, thanks a lot for taking time for hosting as well as testing and giving such a long feedback. Really appreciate... You have been simply superb in this forum.
But, I am still a bit reluctant to flash this ROM over Fusion, just because of that RAM avaialbility. In Fusion, I have around 23 to 24 MB RAM free, even after running TouchFlo, Wisbar advance etc., as well as after installing a huge amount of softwares (some of them in storage itself), I still have around 16 MB free in ROM. So, I am just perplexed, as why should I flash this one.
The only advantage, I can make out in this rom, is fast "windows" directory browsing as well as booting. But, I feel these are the items which we don't do each now and then. Even, I am pretty satisfied about the responsiveness of Fusion rom, such as switching applications etc. Moreover, responsiveness of TouchFlo has been simply great, and never felt it as a memory hogger, as its RAM consumption has been consistent and may be because of the 28 MB free RAM, provided by Fusion on start-up.
I have also attached a screenshort here, in which you can see that around 20.21 MB RAM is free, even when the ROM is running Touch Flo, Wisbar Advance, Hi-Calc, Resco Explorer, Excel (with a document loaded) and SPB screenshort applications. There may be even other applications such as SPB Keyboard in the background. Isn't it cool? Moreover, swiching applications have been instantaneous too. When I click on the icon of a running application on the Wisbar, the app is displayed immediately, within a second.
Again, I am not at all trying to downplay the efforts put by you to upload this ROM on a mirror and give us not only the access but also the feedbacks and support. Just wanted to put the points here. May be, you will come up with valid arguments and make me flash this one. Just because you must be knowing much more about these stuffs than me, who is almost a newb.
Best Regards...
Hi Dheeraj!
Buddy, if the lomlom's ROM is working for that much great for you, you have no reason to flash this. In my case, it was not. I got only 16-19 MB free without running any app whatsoever, in the case of lomlom's. Plus there were icons missing in Settings tab, and small inconsistensies here and there. Moreover since i tinker around with my phone a lot currently, accessing the \Windows folder is a routine task for me, and with lomlom's ROM i was having a lot of problem with that. Talking about Manilla 2D, ya it looks fancy but after a week of use, i found that its not that usable with me, personally. For me the charm of it was over.
And apart from all this, I always wanted a ROM that works like stock WM 6 ROM of HTC, in short, gives the "Original" look to my phone but still provides me with all the features of WM 6.1. I dont know why but i dont like it when the original OS is crippled in anyway. In this ROM, nothing is missing from the original WM 6.1 installation as described on the feature comparison page for Windows Mobile on Microsoft website.
So in short, its a matter of personal tastes. Our needs are a bit different and so are our ROMS I guess if you dont feel any problem with lomlom's then stick with it. Its a great ROM too and i and other members have solved almost all problems that happen with it after first time boot, so someone should use the result of those efforts too
When i came to this forum, i found that GENE users and specially those with NEW GENE were just crying around with SPL problems and nothing was there as a choice for them in terms of ROM availability. Thats why i decided to do whatever efforts i can to make things better for this part of the forum, ie. The GENE section. Now, i am not a social worker, but i feel for people whom problems i can sense becuase i also have them
Thanks for your complements
HTC Applications in this rom like home plugin, comm manager ,task manager , audio manager, album are very old versions
Can any one help me to update that one
or cook this rom with newer versions ????????
Home plugin? its not even there buddy! ya the ROM is a bit old, but works nicely.
Help !!!!!
hi guys ...i have a new gene (s/n ht8xxx) can any one tell me the steps to update my old wm5 to the new one step by step ...... please .....
Buddy, the way is completly described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2953612&postcount=2
Not to offend you or anything, please try to search before posting. Many of the custom ROM flashing problems with P3400 and P3400i have been already solved. Just a suggestion, Ok buddy.
And ya, although that tutorial references the lomlom's fusion ROM, you can use the ROM described in this thread too if you want to. The procedure is same, only use this ROM in place of fusion one.
thaaanx
thanx alot man ...u help me alot ....

New, read for 9 hour's and confused. Help Please?

I am a little overwelmed which how much stuff you can hack up or modify with this compared to my Compaq iPaq I had about 9-10 years ago. I could really use some help with a few questions. My 1st post here, and i am going to try not to be a newbie, i do a lot of developing with FoFiX, and XBMC skins, and know what it's like to get newb's asking questions already answered. But i have searched and read for 9 hours straight now and just confused still about a few things. If anyone doesn't mind answering these and just had some time, I would really appreaciate the help.
I already messed around with trying out the other home alternative, and iPhone clone, and after playing around since with the manila/TouchFlo, so far it's the best one out with being skinable and also is smoothest and nicest looking, with easiest finger touch control. So i am now wanting to learn as much as i can. I'm by far no stranger to MOD'ing stuff , so i mostly understand the dAnGeR's and terminology. I am already going to start converting an XBMC skin i co-develop ('Back-Row') for ever one to use. I do a good bot of all the graphics for it, and doing all the work to update it for 1900x1080 realms.
1) Currently i am using Manila2D_1.00_1819.2926 for now, and still can't quite figure out about the differences of using either 'kitchen' or 'Loaded' manilla ROM files. I am gathering from reading that this allows you to replace your current rom with another ROM that already has manilla inside/cooked so you are running it directly, as part of the overall OS, thus saving internal memory, allowing certain problems from happening. Like it here and there switches programs (opera) back to the touchflo screen, as well as it prompting "Tap here to start Touchflo" and having to do this every here and there.
2) The touchflo 3d isn't available yet, and possible/definitely wouldn't run on a HTC Mogul (64megs internal, 1?? storage), 4 gig stick memory card (got an 8 gig stick on the way from Amazon-$14.99) or maybe??? Cube seems to work ok so far, alongside with Manila2D_1.00_1819.2926. I read about install problems and such with Manila if cube was installed, it's working fine for me.
3) When i make a contact memory, i notice it doesn't seem to hold the memory setting. As when i go back, they are all blank again "+"), is there possibly a file that needs a reg switch or is this just a bug? My favorite program links I set stay just fine though.
Again, thanks for any help on this guys. I am still reading and searching, and will keep an eye on this thread in case someone will hopefully answer this. And thanks again in advance.
Here's the deal. HTC Titan has only 64 Megs of RAM, ~25-27 of which are usable at bootup. This means a beautiful app such as M2D takes up its fair share of memory and CPU, causing intensive programs such as Opera Mobile to crash now and then.
If you want to make that sacrifice for a pretty, flowing interface, you will not be alone. Scrosler makes an excellent ROM [variant of DCD's 3.2.6] which I've found - over the course of a few weeks - very stable.
Again with the cube interface.. it's just pretty graphics and will eat up alot of precious memory once you get some intensive programs running. If you just want your phone to be impressive and fun - cool, go for it.
With respect to the contacts vanishing, that is a problem with the way your Windows Live is set up. To resolve it I think you must force the server to -not- attempt to sync your contacts. Also, use dotFred's PIM Backup [found in development & hacking] and you will be able to save your contacts, messages, tasks, etc. on a single backup file.
If you are going to get into flashing various ROMs, I suggest picking up UC Autorun. Had I used it from the start, I would have sliced off several days of reconfiguring.
I've read this numerous times. I consistently see people write that if one runs M2D, especially on scrosler's ROM, that one sacrifices memory and that's why opera and things have problems.
I disagree. Because the ROM already has so much free RAM, I have more memory running M2D on this ROM than I did running a stock ROM.
The R4R ROM, if one installs the HTC Task Manager, has EnableAutokill enabled by default. This is what's killing your apps when you start running low on memory. I recommend disabling it. There are instructions if you keep reading that thread. Or you can download my updates to this ROM, which are also linked to in the R4R thread. Maybe a couple more hours of reading and you'll get through the whole thread.
I disagree.

I really appreciate the opinions and such for responses. That's helpfull to me. Today i removed the cube program, since i store the cab file on my 8 gig storage stick in case i want to dump it on, but also since a fair bit of what it does i can still also do with M2D anyway. Although yes it's cool looking, the main purpose can be done with M2d, and for the most part i now have "Free:18.70MB" of free available space from "Free: 10.24MB", almost doubled the amount of free memory space. As well as freeing up the space from "In Use:42MB" down to now being "In Use:34MB". So at least now programs aren't crashing.
Now things are working fine. I still need to mess with the contacts not saving, but program links are fine. Trying to understand about the mentioned how to possibly fix this with Windows Live and syncing. And also why touchflo still throws the 'Tap to load Touchflo' problem. Would flashing with this said 'Kitchen' ROM or the extra one include touchflo so it's always kind of running? This is the last 2 questions for me to work out, everything else i got going and understand already.
