Rogers customers using AGPS - Touch Pro, Fuze ROM Development

Are there any rogers customers using AGPS? do u use the unlimited browsing addon from rogers for this? how much does the AGPS help with the lag issue seen on TomTom and other navigation softwares?

AGPS only affects time to initial fix I'm afraid.

I thought AGPS also kicks in if you go through a tunnel etc....I might be wrong.

I believe it does. Because if you start the program with out any data connection it will exit out. And if you are trying to go on a trip and need directions or are trying to follow the map it wont update unless you have a constant data connection.

Are you using a Custom ROM?
Because I hear that some Custom ROMS have the AGPS feauture disabled. This is what is used for cellular traingulation ( using the towers )
i think i figures it out for now guys....... i didnt know that i had satellite gps on my phone already . i loaded all the appropriate roms from this awsome site!....... so now im just looking fo an easily hackable gps navigator i think ill try tomtom for now but i gotta figure out how to load and register the iso to my pda........ if i like it ill definetly buy it but i want to sure and safe this stuff isnt cheap

It's my understanding that Sprint doesn't use towers to locate position, so you can't use the Mogul to report your location with towers...you would have to use the GPS.
TomTom is working great
Works great with or without cell signal and easy to install and fix.
Is there any GPS program that doesnt require a data connection? Some that have a local Maps database. I have GPS receiver but i dont have a data plan so can't use google maps. Any suggestion? PathAway is one of them but that thing so complicated to use..and expensive

Yes there is. I personally use Tom Tom Navigator 6. This is ONLY the GPS software. I believe the other versions of Tom Tom have the software and a bluetooth GPS receiver in the package ( more expensive ).
You can also use the GARMIN GPS software. I believe it is a little bit cheaper on the price then Tom Tom, but It might lack some features.
I'm sure there are others but those two I believe these are the most known / used.

Actually I find the Garmin has more features than the Tom Tom.
and the latest version of XT has a much better addressing system as far as finding addresses.
I live in a Rural area where roads sometimes have two names because two routes join together....
Tom Tom doesn't recognize one or the other route and will sometimes only take the lesser known route as input instead of the major roadways designation.
Both are great navigators though...I just prefer the garmin.
do you guys know how I set up the GPS after the ROM upgrades? I have tomtom, but it doesn't recognize the internal gps
It was my understanding the location from cell towers doesn't work on 6800 in google maps???
Am I reading this thread correctly that there IS a way to get this to work?

The original version of google maps doesnt use cellular triangulation (towers / agps) the NEW Beta Version does. Also if you don't like Google Maps you can also use Microsoft Live Search.
To get the New Google Maps Beta w/ Cellular Triangulation go here:
http://www.google.com/gmm/mylocation.html?hl=en
If you want Microsoft Live Search Mobile visit:
ls.windowsmobile.com on your cell phone via your designated browser.

Enable Location On instead of 911 on your cell phone first.
You can go to the dialer and press the menu button -- options -- services -- location setting and press GET SETTINGS and enable Location on.
The go to start -- settings -- system -- external gps : make sure that on the programs tap that COM4 is set on the GPS program port menu. On the hardware tab chose NONE as the GPS hardware port menu and for the baud rate choose 4800. Finally on the access tap check the Manage GPS automatically box
All that is to set the GPS to work on GPS software (tom tom, google maps, microsoft live search ......)
Now to the Tom Tom part.
Once Tom Tom is installed and still doesn't get a GPS signal you must then configure the GPS to work with Tom Tom.
Initialize Tom Tom. Go to the Change Preferences Tab ( menu tab that looks like a wrench)
Look for the Show GPS Status Icon ( it is a Satellite ) then click on it.
Once in click on the Configure Tab on the lower left side.
Select the Other NMEA GPS Receiver when you try to select a GPS Receiver : then once selected you will be prompted to change the baud rate ( make sure it is 4800 ). Once you click done you will have a menu stating " GPS is Connected to" and you must choose COM 4:
Now your done.
The bad thing about the GPS in our TITANS / 6800's is that it is not always running and it needs to warm up / initialize first in order to get a signal in any application.
You can either wait until it picks up a signal or download a program to help you initiate the GPS receiver when you want to use Tom Tom.
I'll provide you a program that helps initialize the GPS and then launches Tom Tom for you. ( This saves time trying to warm up the GPS and then looking for the Tom Tom app and running it)
Dont get irritated if Tom Tom doesn't recognize the GPS right away it might take less then a minute when you are in your car or are in sight of the clear sky. Tom Tom doesn't seem to work well in doors.
I hope this helped you out abit.
If you rather choose another GPS warm up / initializing software you can research on your own. Im just supplying you with something that works only with Tom Tom.
Once you download the software extracted in your computer....and copy the software to your device not the SD card - \windows\start menu\programs
This is not a CAB it is an executable.

So if I read this right, you want to use a GPS-like function that doesn't use GPS satellites. You want to use cell towers to do triangulation. Navizon makes a product:
http://www.navizon.com/navizon_v-gps.asp
It can provide GPS data output but it does triangulation via cell towers and wifi access points.

GPS Problem

I have a problem with the GPS. i installed the new radio version and everything but for somereason no GPS program will pick it up. i tried using google maps and Quick GPS. In order to use the GPS does wifi need to be off? If so then that means i have to use data which will cost me since i have no plan.
and what exactally is REV A and what does it do?

[Q] Another GPS question...

Hey guys,
Here's a quick rundown of my situation: I've had my GPS connector replaced per the instructions in the "Correct Hardware Fix" thread. I've been running tests using both the integrated gps test menu and the Chartcross gps test app.
For starters, I've found something quite curious about the Chartcross app. Despite the fact that I have "Use Wireless Networks" disabled in location & security settings, the Chartcross app does appear to use network assisted gps.
Chartcross Tests
Test 1: Place phone in airplane mode, restart, run test. Finds 3-5 sats, maybe connects, takes forever nevertheless. In other words, sucks.
Test 2: Re-enable wireless data. Restart. Run test again. Immediately sees 13 sats, connects to 7 fairly quickly (inside even). Again, this is despite having "Use wireless" unchecked.
My GPS is obviously working (and working well), so why the hell will it not connect while data is off? I'm totally stumped...any advice would be much appreciated.
P.S. I've tried Nero v5 (awesome, by the way) and stock 2.2. Pretty sure my phone is a July 2010 model, if that helps.
I had some slow connect issues with Nero v5 as well. I got mine resolved by flashing a newer (KA7) modem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868774
I'm getting awful gps with the ka7 modem. How was your gps before hardware fix?
Get a clue people, read the Vibrant advertisement. The Vibrant has GPS assist NOT GPS. That means without the Cellular connection just relying on the Sats for the connection, the GPS will be sucky and slow, but it will work without the Cell/wireless signal.
i am using KA7 and i am getting 11-14 in view and 5-7 lock, fast locate.
Without Cell signal i get 5-8 view and 3-5 lock takes 45sec-1min
But this could because of where i am and most likely why people have different performance of the GPS

Sorry man, I didn't realize the distinction.
So let me get this straight:
An assisted GPS uses some sort of wireless data regardless of whether or not the "Use Wireless Networks" box is checked in Android settings?

S743 on AT&T Data Conn. off big bill from AT&T

So I've had this S743 for 3 days now and I thought I had it setup correctly to use wifi for data comm.
wifi enabled and selected to use my home network. I can see the radio tower status icon.
Under the comm manager data connection is off.
I have a very simple $45/mo plan with no data plan.
Over the last 2 days I have been surfing the web a bit did some email tests with my ISP and used the on board GPS app which is horrible. Not heavy usage but experimentation to see if I like how the phone works.
Then after 2 days I get an email from AT&T that I have extremely high data usage exceeding my account limit and that I should sign up for a data plan at once.
$29 over 2 days for this little bit of fluff? A total of 2,900kb in data.
So I call up AT&T and they tell me this and that and want me to sign up for a plan which I may do.
But I want to be able to know that the datacomm is happening via WIFI when I can see it's in service.
They also told me that all GPS data is forced through 3G and bypasses WIFI???
Can anyone here give me an idea about what I may be doing wrong and whether AT&T is correct about the GPS service?
Is there a better GPS app that doesn't do this? This one pretty much stinks anyway. A resolution of 1000 meters doesn't cut it.
AT&T also informed me that I can't have a smart phone without a data contract. Really? I've had one for 6 years.
Thanks for any light you shed on the subject.
One th I have subsequently found out is that if data connection is off and wifi is off then when I go into IE and start surfing it does bring up pages. Then when I go back to the Comm Manager the Data Connection is still off for an instant and then it automatically turns itself on as though it had been turned on by use of IE and the status was just being updated.
Is there any way to stop this?
The only way to completely stop data usage is to delete the APNs from within the Settings->Connections dialog.

What exactly are APNs? I don't see anything labeled that way in that section on my phone.
Thanks for the reply.
Try to download the NoData app; google it. I believe it's freeware. Toggle all connections to "Disabled" and that should do the trick..
About the GPS; all I can think of is that the QuickGPS app (under desktop accessoires or whatever it's called in english) automatically downloads new info about the GPS locations.

Thank you.
I did manage to delete the APN and that did work but now I've decided to keep this phone, put it on an AT&T GO-Phone plan and add a very limited data plan. So I will be trying to find a better way to make certain it doesn't always automatically go for the GSM even when you have it turned off.
I looked at your suggestion but it sounds like it conflicts with netframe 3.5 which I have installed.

Gps

Is gps a real gps or actually a-gps? Seems all tablet and phone want to confuse people this.
The GPS on Galaxy Player is a real GPS and it is pretty accurate. However, you need to find an app that DO NOT use data connection. May apps require you to have a data connection and it will give you an impression that the GPS is not working.
People have been talking about this in this thread.

Technically it is not a GPS... It is an aided GPS through the use of cell phone towers, so yes A GPS. It is very accurate though. Use Navfree if you want the use of offline maps. No internet connection is required once you install the maps. Hope this helps.
Yes it has Both..
AGPS when you have WiFi connection can be achieved.. much faster fix.
Once you had already acquired this and had initial fix, it's much faster to have a GPS fix for days..
use app like "gps status" free from market.
Note: It uses Satellites so its more easier to have a fix when you're outside and have a clear sky.
Two apps that come to mind for offline map is Map Doyd and Nav Droyd.
In map droyd the maps are free but Navdroyd will cost you a small onetime fee.

It can receive assistance from the network, but unlike many AGPS solutions, it does fairly well when operating standalone. It CAN lock fairly quickly when standalone, the only other devices I have that lock as well standalone are my Tab 10.1 and my GS2. (Original GalaxyS devices and the Infuse have GPS receivers that perform horribly without assistance.)

No phone function in YP-G70, so not A-GPS obviously. Don't you need data connection in Navfree to enter address even you have offline map?
