Hello
When I run Nav4All it runs a file named AimsMIDP.exe which sometimes uses almost 7M of my already limited memory. It doesn't shut down this file when I exit the Program.
Does anyone else have this problem? I like this program better than Amaze but don't want to soft reset everytime I use it to get my memory back.
Unfortunately, that's "normal" -- I think the app needs a little more work... I'm seeing the same thing and have to do a soft reset after using Nav4all to reclaim my memory...
I found a solution. I'm posting from my phone so I can't post links... Exit the program by pressing your OK hard button (I use the left side button but the lower right faceplate hard button should work). Then use Task Manager or X Button or other memory manager to close the program. This clears the locked up memory. If you goof and close the prog from its menu option, run N4A again and exit as above. Hope this helps!
I have noticed the same issue and have filed a ticket with Nav4all. I welcome all feedback.
Thanks Osteo
That works for me also. This will be fine until they update the program.
Maybe TimTampa's ticket will bring about an update soon.

Glad to help. It ticked me off initially as I love N4A; glad I stumbled on the fix!
will this make the overall nav4all software experience faster, or is it still slow as crap?
This just relates to a problem after Nav4All is shut down. It left a large file running that would make WM6.1 begin to turn off other programs that I wanted to run due to low memory.
Just got an HD2, and after looking for a good task manager found this awesome app TaskFacade 4. Unfortunately the dev appears to have stopped development for it, and the HD2 is just too fast for the app. I was bored, so I decompiled it (it's .net so that's easy) and made some minor fixes.
Anyway, here's what I fixed:
4.02 fixed by aussiebum (thanks aussiebum! ):
1. Fixed names of shortcuts.
2. Changed default destination directory to install on a storage card when selected.
4.02 changelist:
1. Fixed a memory leak that occurred when an app was started and closed outside of Task Facade.
2. Cleaned up Layout config page.
3. Cleaned up config file loading to minimize potential errors due to old and incompatible config files.
4.01 changelist:
1. Increased maximum number of frames for zoom-unzoom animation.
2. Added an optional sleep between frames to smooth out animation and reduce amount of resources used by the app.
3. Fixed a minor race condition which sometimes caused an updated icon to flash through just reactivated app.
Attaching latest version. Works perfectly on my HD2. Check it out.
Attaching screenshots.

... Thanks!
Possible to get some screens.
I usually feel that task managers drain the battery a bit. How about this one?
Added screenshots. I just got this phone, so it's hard for me to judge its impact on the battery life. I will do some experiments.
Excellent try!!!
I used to use TaskFacade on my HD, but I always got the problem of gwes.exe growing larger and larger when usin TF, so I had to unistall it.
Can you manage to correct this problem?
Mr. spacepants, why don't you fix even "klaxon" , as the source is free, because gives problems with HD2.. to dismiss/snooze an alarm needs to unlock the phone first
have original taskfacade 4 on my hd2 it works fine except for the reasons you gave for making the new one.
tried it last night and it came up with something like the settings wouldnt load. i sot reset hoping thats all it needed but it still didnt work.
then my phone started having the led blink non stop.
so i uninstalled and put the original back on.
soft reset many times and tried tweaks to get the light off and eventually it stopped.
overall the program didnt work and no idea if led was unrelated

spacepants,
Your modification causes me the same problem.
Is it possible to make TaskFacade run as a service?

I just tried it today. After about 20 hours of running, with many task switches gwes.exe grew from 4.73 MB to 4.85 MB. And I am not sure if this was because of the TaskFacade - I didn't see any connection between its growth and app usage.
I am pretty sure I didn't fix this. Did you use version 4 when you saw this behavior? I guess it could also be thanks to a fix made in WinMo 6.5.

Huh, strange. I am not seeing this. Do you have any repro steps? Also what are you running it on - which WM version?

Crap, sorry for all the trouble. I don't see how the app could have made the LED blink - it has no code that would call that API. Are you sure it's related to TaskFacade?
I am fixing the dependence of the app on the config file. It sounds like the installer didn't work for you for some reason, since it should have replaced everything.
Thanks for giving it a shot.

Now, I'm on WM6.5.5 (23542 build), with sense 2.5.20121225.0.
Let's say that gwes.exe is consuming 38MB before I use TaskFacade.
Right after I run TF, it raises to about 42,7MB and it keeps raising when I use new programs. There is a point above that, I loose HTC menus and standard WM menus are displaying instead.
After a few time gwes.exe stabilizes it size to about 44-45MB.
I don't know if there use some kind os issues when using TF in Touch HD, because it has the same effect with different ROMs I tested.

I think I may have found the problem, but without a way to repro the bug I can't be sure I fixed it. Looks like gwes.exe can in some cases cache images that are in use, and if you do not explicitly dispose of them, the cache keeps growing.
I am not sure why I am not seeing this on my HD2. I have a Kaiser and a Touch Pro 2 lying around here - I will see if I can get a repro with them tomorrow, and test the potential fix.
Weird that your gwes.exe at the beginning is already 38 MB - I haven't seen mine go above 6 MB. It sounds like some other program on your phone may already have a problem.

It depends on which app you use to determine it: sktools separates process and heap (so the measure is lower) while, for example, memmaid keeps it together (and thus the measure is higher).
Anyway, to give an example, with Manila and iPhoneToday my gwes at startup is 13.6 mb with sktools and 42mb with memmaid
btw, i too (blackstone) have problems with TF as jolas: after a short while i lose manila menus AND TF, also if in foreground, is not visible (it's there, since if i blind click somewhere i go to a different task, but i cannot see anything)

Sorry, I was not very clear. When I said that my gwes.exe is 38MB, I mean at a random point (after a few hours of use), not after a soft reset.
As for the gwes.exe and caching images, I believe that you are right...
I hope you to find a solution, to make possible for me to use TF.
Thanks for your effords!!!

Yes, this is exactly the problem I have, too.
Are there other HD users who face the same problem with TF, or we are the only 'lucky'?
yeah i have no idea how it would have done anything to the led but it definetly happened right after installing ?
il give the next cab a shot though and see if it installs properly

Strange, I still can't repro this. Tried it on a couple of Energy ROMs on my Touch Pro 2 (one based on 21898, the other on 23554) - nothing. At best I get a 50k growth in gwes.exe every time a program starts and closes. I am using Task Manager 3.1 for measurements BTW, but memmaid concurs.
OK, if this doesn't repro on my Kaiser I am going to write a quick test program and try running through the normal operations of the app several thousand times to see if that has any effect.
Could you confirm that the steps you are using to get into this state? Are they the following?
1. Start an app.
2. Minimize the app.
3. Open TaskFacade.
4. Switch to the app.
5. Close the app from TaskFacade.
6. Go to step 1.
Thanks again for trying this out, BTW.

I want to thank you for keep searching about the problem I face.
The steps I usually do are:
1. Start an app.
2. Minimize the app.
3. Open TaskFacade (I have assign it to a hardware key via AEButton Plus)
4. Switch to the app.
5. Close the app.
6. Go to step 1.
I am grateful for your work!
If you want, I could try your test versions to resolve the problem I face.
Thank you!
What button are you assigning taskfacade to and what app are you using to do it? I tried aebuttons and it fails to map the volume up and down on the T-Mobile US version of HD2...not sure about other keys.
Any Way to stop Launcher Pro from showing up in Task Manager? Would be nice, so I could use the "End All" button again.
Ikr! This makes me mad too...
But after a month I got used to pressing end seperately

You really should stop ending tasks like that. The phone will end up using more resources/battery to restart all the apps.
The crude method of ending tasks manually/with task killers are invented for the first generation Android phones with very limited processing power and space. The newer phones don't have such problems anymore and the softwares are far more efficient at managing resources too.
What you are doing now is trying to install paddles in a car so you could 'cycle' the car like a bike.

Why assume that I'm wanting to free up memory? I've been around awhile now and have read the arguments about task killers, etc. Is it not ok to ask a question about a program (Task Manager) that comes stock in the ui? Still hoping for a solution...
Ever come up with any solution? I have the same issue / question. Thanks.

Yea...if your gonna use Launcher Pro..it is gonna run in the task manager. If you end it and its set as your default launcher, when you hit home its gonna come back on..if you dont want it to show up...delete it or set your default launcher back to TW
Use the back button to turn off apps after you are done using them. Faster than clicking on Task Manager then pressing End and does the same thing.
After doing the rounds installing Auto Nooter on several NookColors, I thought I'd make a quick list of apps that are essential to have for any new installation. I'll update this list as needed, but hopefully it will provide new rooted users a good jumping point to get a nicely functioning device.
This list is geared towards the new rooted NookColor user who runs stable builds / auto nooted builds. If you just bought a Nook Color and haven't rooted yet, go see Guide to Nook Color Rooting. Many of these apps below will fix problems with the stock rom.
The list isn't really targeted for the Nookie Froyo bootable SD card, so if you have one, take what you will.
If you're a hip person and run custom roms or the like, you may find these useful, too! (Using ClockWorkRecovery or other roms is currently not documented in the Nook Color rooting guide. Don't attempt unless you're able to fix if things break.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Home Switcher - Say you accidentally set your home to not Softkeys before you got a launcher? Go grab home switcher and fix it!
ADWLauncher, or other Home screen. You need some place to run everything from. ADW Launcher is a great first step, and you can always change later.
AppBrain - An app market add-on that manages your apps for you. Much more comprehensive than current market.
Fancy Widget - Gets you started with an all-in-one clock widget you can add to your launcher, since ADW doesn't give you one by default. Add Fancy Home from the widgets menu for the comprehensive widget.
SoftLocker - Keeps wifi from bugging during a sleep by forcing sleep mode to only turn off screen. Yes, this will drain more battery, but the NC battery is huge, and not having to forcefully reconnect at every wake is worth it for people dealing with bugs. You may have to relaunch SoftLocker at reboot to get it to work properly, but that's a one-time thing per session.
DolphinBrowser HD, Miren Browser, etc. - There are plenty of better web browsers than the built-in one, mostly supporting multitouch, tabs, and more.
Root Explorer - Costs $4 at the time of this post. If you're going to spend any money on an android app, this should be it. A file management tool that is a million times better than others, since you can do a lot of simple root activities on device quickly without needing adb. It's really a very good and important to have app.
Astro File Manager - Another good file manager, but doesn't support Root. It's really good for simple file system management where you don't want to run the risk of breaking anything. Also, it can somehow install apk packages in the worst of conditions where other installers fail.
Titanium Backup - good for backing up data, or wiping data from a buggy app that keeps crashing
Thumb keyboard - $1.65 at time of posting. possibly the best keyboard for the nook. Beautiful display, customizable key and row height. Make sure to suppress full screen in options. Any keyboard requires some setup process to install via Terminal. See Replacing the Default Keyboard (You can use the terminal app below. Your app location should be /data/app/com.beansoft.keyboardplus.apk . Copy that to /system/app and use NookColor Tools to set the keyboard. This will make the market think the app isn't installed, but it works!)
Disk Usage - shows a visual representation of disk space at a glance. great app for finding where your space went!
GScript - lets you automate scripted commands. good for devs.
Android Terminal - lets you enter commands directly. good for devs.
adbwireless - adb connections over wireless. very convenient.
ROM Manager - An important app if you're using one of the newer experimental builds running from ClockworkModRecovery. If you don't know what this is, forget I even said anything about this app... Or read this link if you're really interested in some cutting edge build stuff, but ignore it if you just want a working device and you've auto nooted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any apps you'd like to recommend for this list for the newbies out there? Post below what you think is important for people to have. This is for essentials, only, not optional apps like games or live wallpapers.
<reserved>
<also reserved>
Great list, here's a few more.
Miren browser - polished 3rd party browser with some awesome features. Slick menus and swipe to go forward and back sold me.
Thumb keyboard - possibly the best keyboard for the nook. I'm currently using the honeycomb skin and it looks fantastic. Customizable key and row height. Perfect for my huge thumbs.
Astro - file manager, compression handler, app installer, image and sound player....all around a badass app essential to any android device.
Also wanted to mention that root explorer is excellent. Forget logging on your computer to modify a file. I changed my nook hardware keys in a minute or so using root explorer. Great app.
Dont forget rom manager and the knowledge of howto make a nandroid with it
Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 (zoom2)/Tapatalk Pro
DROPBOX...Move .apks, music, movies, new flashables, ANYTHING, from phone, PC, or another Nook to yours. Should be 2nd on list beside Root Explorer (IMHO).

Can anyone recommend a good ram manager? I have autokill but I notice it does not kill everything and says my ram available keeps going down until I reset my nook. (gradually but still kind of annoying)

If you are on the stock os 1.1 (Eclair 2.1) you may want to look into Advanced Task Killer. If you are on Froyo or higher you shouldn't use this. Android will do a good job taking care of itself.
That said, I reboot my Android devices once every couple of days. I notice that keeps it running pretty well.
I actually have been using advanced task killer on froyo. Will that hurt anything?
I found WiFi Explorer (FREE) or Pro ($1.60) very useful to move files between my computer and NC without a cable.
Besides some of the other great apps people have said I would add 'Pulse' as an RSS reader. It looks so good and a great way to get your news!

Tasker turns a smartphone into a SMART phone.
I thought about getting it to try to enable a numeric lock code, and trying on my DX, it does work with one of the Locale plugins, but it's a bit flaky. I was gonna set the Nook so that if it was within range of my WiFi at home or at work, it would not have the lock code, but everywhere else, it would be enabled.

Yes....You are running froyo...android 2.2 and above optimizes running apps/services...don't mess with it...keep one around if you have to kill a rogue app on the fly, but dont let it run continuously....

plus one for both of these
Tapatalk or XDA devs Android app for reading this site, duh! hehe
Two great app to how!
I would only add two additional apps to this great list...
Sqlite Editor and Task killer, great apps to have on a newly rooted nook color!
I would strongly recommend the following:
Moon+ Reader for reading ebooks
Perfect viewer for comics
Epistle for taking notes (synchronises with dropbox)
I use ATK a lot on my DroidX with Froyo, if not it just keeps on getting slower and the battery drains quickly. What happens is some apps keep transmitting even though you closed them. For example, USA Today app I believe keeps sending fresh news articles even after you close the app as it's still running. So keeping it alive when you may not look at it until a few days later is wasteful of battery life and slows other stuff you want to do. Was it works with 2.1, I don't think so, I believe ATK is just as relavent now than then.
The app you really need to get after Angry Birds is Paper Toss.
File Expert?
I use File Expert for managing my files on my nook. It's free, has an option to run as root, and has a built in network interface that works out of the box. Plus having a back button right on the UI makes it easier than using any of the soft keys hacks... I can't post links, but the package is called "xcxin.filexpert" on the market.
Hi guys. I finally put my hands on Xperia Ray. So far so good. I am enjoying this phone and everything is as expected. I updated it to the latest ICS for my country (v4.0.3) and everything is running very smoothly. I didn't rooted it and i run stock software from my operater (simply i still don't have need to install custom things)
I tried quite a few free task manager but somehow i like default ICS task manager. I can access it by pressing Home button for few seconds on my ray (which isn't touch button it is real button).
Is there any way i mean how can i create shortcut on Xperia Ray screen so i could access it in the same way i can access every other application? What is the procedure. I tried with conventional method (touching somewhere on empty screen and adding widget/shortcut/program/ but ICS task manger is not in the list or i simply can't find it..) but with no luck?!
Is that even possible? To add shortcut to default ICS task manger?
Thanks guys..

Thanks guys. I read article about that FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android (geekfor.me) however i am baffled and puzzled about one thing.
If Task manager is (how writer of that article is claiming) is (quote from article) likely doing more harm than good by killing tasks that aren’t ready to end. then why is it there in the first place?
Wouldn't be illogical to think that superb google developers intentionally put it there in ICS to likely doing more harm then good? That's a bit stupid in my opinion.
I read article several times and only thing which makes sense to why this task manager should not be there is situation where you kill application when it's not ready to be killed but then how does writer of this article know or decide when this is good thing to do and why is he assuming that all users don't know when is time for application to be killed or not? I am genuinely curious to see answers on this issue but at this point of time i am more willing to believe that this application wouldn't exist as default application built in OS if it was really harmful then to believe writer on some article at some public forum. To be clear that there is no disrespect intended to the creator of that article it's jsut that my logic tell me that this app wouldn't be there if it was really harmful.
Btw i am using it every day yet i didn't experienced any issue so far.
the stock task manager is helpful when some app is persistent and just won't shut down and it uses some CPU percentage. or when you notice some app is draining your battery.
