I badly want a 32gb card for my phone but 1) They're not really buyable yet, and 2) I couldn't afford one anyway if they were.
So I've got the 8gb one that came with it and have got another 8gb one now as well.
Was wondering if there is a way that the spare one can be stored on/in the phone somehow, or if there is a product to do this?
I don't want to use a case for my phone as I hate the things. Companies spend a fortune making a phone as small as they can then people slap them in bulky cases that defeats the point. I understand people wanting to protect their new gadget of course but they're not for me. So that's not an option.
What I was thinking though, is for instance, a replacement rear cover with a tiny little raised bit in the middle which a spare microSD card could slot into. Preferably with the same sort of push in/push out latch mechanism that the phone itself has. If I can get something like that I'd be REALLY pleased but I would bet there's no such product.
So instead I'll have to keep one on a keyring which I may not always have one with me, or keep it in my wallet and then lose it etc etc. I don't really fancy having a spare card 'taped' onto my phone either!
What are the options, and what do other people do? I haven't checked but I'm assuming there's no space inside the back cover to store a spare?
Cheers!
I've seen a product on amazon that seems to be catering for this kind of thing but it looks enormous compared to what you potentially could have:
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-SD-Holder-Storage-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000Y3W51K
This is the sort of thing I want though - not sure if you can just order a single one from places like this, but if you had one of these push in slots attached solidly to a smoothed off battery cover it would be perfect. If I can find somewhere to buy a slot the same as in this link (can't find any on ebay for some reason) I'd try and make one myself!
http://www.findtheneedle.co.uk/products/519700-ultra45flat-microsd-card-holder.asp
Anyone know where I can order one of these (uk preferably or ebay if you can find one) ?
I guess one option is to get an SD adaptor and sort of glue it to the battery cover since they're very slim and some of them can have a very snug fit when you push in a MicroSD card.
Like one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/T-Flash-micro...14&_trkparms=72:1683|66:4|65:12|39:1|240:1318
Not sure how you'd make it look nice but that's another issue.....

I'm always carry a spare SD-card inside the phone with me, there is just enough space for it (figured it out by myself)!
It's quit simple:
1. Remove backcover
2. Lay a spare SD card upside-down on the metal surface, above, the same place/location/ position where you insert the SDcard).
3. Replace backvover, thats it!
Simple as kissing!Succes
No way! I'm picking up the spare card so I'll try but I thought there'd be no chance of fitting one in there. Cool!

Just like I said before, simple as kissing
i carry a sim card and mem card in the same way under back cover
I do use a silicon case, which I do recommend as it adds nearly no weight/extra width to the device, but keeps the case shiny and new, and inside the cover I keep my Oyster/travel card, which means I can just 'swipe' my phone next to the card-reader, and I also keep a spare card-reader/card in there, again it adds no bulk. Glad to know I can fit one inside as well
Actually, this SD tip is in the sticky

would the card reader damage the phone over time?
Possibly. I've stopped doing it now, but when I did I kept it in a tiny sliver of felt, again adding v. little bulk but protecting it.
But I stopped after a couple of weeks as I never used it!
Store 3 SD Cards in HD
1 in SD Slot and 2 on top of SIM card. Cover fits nicely on top. Thats what I do.

just tried this now, as i have a 4gb card, a 2gb card, a 1gb card, the 8gb card i got with the phone, and a blanking card (not a card but a piece of plastic the same shape and size) any way it works the 2 cards are there.
question is will it damage the second card or phone, also why not just buy a 16gb card till the 32gb comes out.

Hi all, new to the forums and just got my x10 pro last week. Lovely phone.
I find it ridiculous that the SD card can only be removed by removing the back case. You can buy replacement back cases pretty cheap, so I was considering carefully cutting out the area on the side around the SD card so that it could be accessed without removing the case. The back even has a recess where the card is so that the material is thinner right there.
My question is has anybody tried this? If not, I'll buy a spare back off ebay as a backup and give it a whirl and post my results here...
It's a great phone but already I want to take a saw to it. What is wrong with me???
just do it then.and post the picture here after you done modify it.
Its closed for a reason thats why its not already done ,,it could get dirt in it or worse tou could loose your sd ,,,, personly I would not do it ,,,,,stop being destructive lol
Dude is taking of the back cover such a problem? Takes about 5 seconds, and I rarely swap my SD so..
So decided to try to shave a couple of thousands off the micro SD card to make it flush with the case. I was pretty careful but you reach that point and you never know where that point is when you hit the chip and the card is dead. When I put the card in it was still not flush so just don't do it.
Oh dear, I hope it wasn't a high capacity card.

Meh, risk of the job I guess... Sucky though. Was it enough to fit it nicely though? If it still wasn't enough it's not worth the effort a next time.

why would you want your microSD card to be flushed with the side bezel, it will be near impossible to push it out without using a small screw driver.
Not to mention if you ever attempt to put the microSD back inside the SD adapter you will find it impossible to get it out as there will be nothing grip at since you trimmed off it's end. Those suckers are already a pain to get out of the adapter at their default shape.
ah you people.

You will have better luck if you shave on the contact side and smooth it afterwards. Use the right tool though, like a Dremel cutter wheel and grinder, to keep the traces intact.

Actually I prefer a half-moon shaped slot, makes it easy to push the sd even when it is flush to the case.

The reason why people would want it to be flush with the side bezel is because they are easy to pop out if you hit it since it sticks out so much. I would want it to sit flush so that it would be harder to pop out. I rather have it hard to get out then easy to pop out and loose a $30-$60 SD card. The dock SD card slot s pretty much flush and I like it that way. If you search, many people have lost SD cards due to it sticking out so much.
Ya known...... I just got a clear skinomi full body skin. Never had any intention of putting the little side strip on. I did however cut a little strip and put it over the sd card. If/when I want to remove it, it won't be a problem. The strip will either re-stick, or I have enough length to last a LOT of removals. Not worried about it popping out anymore, plus it's now nice and smooth
Seems like there's more then enough room within the micro sd slot. If you push the card all the way in it goes way below within then case. To me it seems like someone screwed up designing the locking mechanism of the card slot.

Have you looked at the "placeholder" card that ships with the unit? It is noticeably shorter than a real SD card.
If it's a design flaw Asus knew about it. But I suspect it was done on purpose, and it's still a bad idea.

Don't use dremel, it will cause to much heat when cutting and damage the card. Use a razor blade or an exacto knife. You won't be able to cut through on the first pass. So make multiple cuts until you are through.

This would have been a much better solution than leaving the pricey SD card sticking out 1/8 of an inch.

Correct me if I am wrong, but cutting contact side won't help at all. The litte notch on the side is for locking mechanism and it doesn't matter how long the side below that is.
The only hope is to find a card which is shorter at the top. My cards all vary a bit.

You're right of course, my mistake. Unless that notch can be moved the card's end will remain sticking out. Thanks for the feedback.
Bought this case from amazon recently and I just wanted to share that it's amazing.
I always hated a wallet AND phone in my pocket. I always combined them (phone into wallet, or credit cards in case for phone) and this is the perfect combination for me. Allows for a great protective case, while also carrying 4 cards and a few bills for when cash is needed.
I highly reccomend this case.
Only downside: magnet is a little weak. If i ever get ambitious enough I may go in and put in a stronger magnet to really make the latch 'CLICK'. It doesn't come undone on a regular basis, but I would prefer it to snap into place when it gets close.
Enjoy!
I'm interested, but how does it function as a phone/camera? It has cutouts in the back for phone and speaker, but I don't see how you could open the case and use it comfortably without folding the front cover over the back - which would muffle the speaker or block the camera. How do you handle that?
Generally I fold it, or use it like a book. Both work well, just depends on what exactly I am doing. I set it on a table like a book usually. Or fold it to make a phone call. I honestly haven't taken many pictures since the case, but it's really easy to hold like a book and isn't really an issue.
Folding the flap around the back doesn't actually muffle the speaker, there's a gap so the sound gets out. I actually find that the speaker is a little louder than before if I fold the flap over and point the end towards me as it makes the sound waves a bit more directional.
A few pictures would be helpful. Try to take some, with your phone in if possible. I'm intrigued, but the site you linked doesn't show what it looks like opned or in use.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for answers and pics - based on the location of the card slots and the magnet(s), I'd be concerned about damaging any cards (unless it's shielded, which I don't see listed). But I'll keep an eye on it (when the dark brown is available again, it's out of stock ).
I thought cell phones were not good to place next to cards with magnet strips? Correct me if I'm wrong.

The magnet is pretty weak. I considered this as well, but I have been using the SD card and haven't had any issues. Only used it for a week, but no problems so far.
It was pretty cheap (>10$ i believe) so it's worth a check if it comes back in stock

This has been debated. Tested on Mythbusters and found that you needed an incredibly strong magnet to wipe the data off the creditcard strip.
I don't believe that your phone could produce strong enough magnetic fields that it'd wipe the data from a card, but it could be possible if something was going wrong.
I have stored my CC's in my phone (modified various cases) for >1 year and never had an issue. This is the first case that I have used designed for this, and keeps the cards further from the phone than my hacked together ones, so I am not too worried.
Cool case man, I have a case like that for my legacy zune, i got a golla pouch for under $2 on ebay. Loops on to my belt and has slots where you can put some cards and rear 2nd pouch for even usb drives or other gizmos. Stays slim too!

So I went on a cross border journey today to purchase a Springboard on craigslist at an excellent price.
I was very tired when I got home but wanted to tinker with it a bit before bed. I grabbed a microSD I had lying around and inserted it... straight into the SIM slot :-(
I have been trying a few things but avoiding using anything metal because it might damage the SIM contacts. Part of the problem now is, the card got pushed past the metal SIM contacts, and now it won't fall out on its own because the contacts are in the way.
Any ideas on how to save the tablet without damaging the ability to use a SIM card? I don't mind if the SD card gets destroyed.

Same thing happened to me. I solved the problem with a needle.

What did you exactly do with the needle?
What I'm afraid of us that even if I do manage to coax it out, it could force one of the SIM contacts to bend backwards and snap. Then I'd really be boned.
There's a mall sort of on my way home from work that's full of Asian cell repair/unlock shops. Maybe one of them can help. For the price I paid (only $140 for tablet + leather case!) I don't mind forking out a bit more to protect it.
Worst case if it breaks I could see if T-Mobile can be charmed into doing a swap or sending it for repairs. It's just a hell of a haul for me to get out there - each way is an hour of driving time plus 30-60 minutes lining up for the border.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I left it with a shop that repairs all sorts of obscure mobile devices - they said if they can get it out they'll charge $30. I figure that's better than ruining it myself!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
The shop said they had to disassemble it to get the card out, but didn't have to break any warranty seals or such. I will just call this a $30 lesson in humility...

Serious fail here too.. I put an empty microsim converter in the slot and a SIM pin broke when I yanked it out. How did your repair go? Did they manage to open it up and get the SD card out?
I just removed the screws but couldn't get the back cover off
They had to do a minor disassembly but it went well.
If you broke a contact, you should probably get very expert help.

It really depends on where you live. I was at least smart enough to stop when I realized that getting any more aggressive would damage the SIM slot.
Nice snip. I guess I could just hot spot it from my ATT Galaxy Skyrocket, or use wifi. Yea I don't know what I was thinking to be honest.
But I would appreciate any information on this. If you know of a reliable source for the repair of these types of issues please let me know.

Easy fix.
but risky
Get a Bobby Pin
Flatten it.
Remove the the stub at the end
Slide in and pry out the MicroSD card.
Did this like twice.

Please don't encourage risky fixes. In my case, the card slid past the SIM contact, such that pulling it out would have bent and probably snapped the contact.

Just did it
First post: come from a very old nokia phone, Thank you all for this splendid forum.
Was doing a lot of things at same time, copied modules to the sd card and pushed it in the sim slot.
I used a very small flat screwdriver and bent both sides of the cover of the simslot outwards, then you can lift it a little.
Turned around the media pad ,shaked it a little and voila the sd card came out, pushed and bent the sides back.
Pushed the three contacts back, on the second attempt the sim card was recognised, it has to stick out about three mm.
I think i broke the lock.
Hope this helps.
I am on cm9 now, but i can't find the thanks-button.
paperclip
Hello!
I had the same problem today... stuck a micro SD in the SIM slot.
It got pass the golden gates(the sim contacts). But I actually managed to get it out so...
The solution was actually simple, but maby I just got lucky ... I used a paper clip, bent it sorta like a hook and tried to get it behind the micro card when it was at the end of the sim slot. It moved nicely since it has a lot of room there. I was careful not to touch the sim contacts and it worked. My sim works, the micro sd works, all well...
wish I knew I could use a paper clip before I opened my phone xD
Fool Proof Extraction of mini SIM card from Springboard SIM Slot
Yes, I too push the small sized SIM all the way to the bottom of the slot.
Followed the directions of previous extraction: Bent an 1/16 " end on a paper clip.
This allowed me to move the small SIM in a slightly diagonal position as the bottom of the slot, allowing me to slip the hooked end under the chip.
With the screen facing you, the clip goes in on the left side which has the most side space away from the gold tangs
Now the question was how to get past the gold tangs that face the bottom of the SIM slot.
Cut an old credit card along the length to a width slightly less than the mini SIM width.
Insert the credit card (like a shoe horn) into the slot covering the tangs.
Pull gently on the paper clip and you will feel the small SIM bump the bottom of the credit card.
Slide both gently out so the SIM moves over the tangs as the credit card shoehorn moves out of the way.
Whew!
I finally was able to open my Truesmart today after receiving a quality set of screwdrivers ---- But when I got the case opened, there was no rubber seal in there that everybody else has. I removed the battery and added a 16gb micro card. I then put back the battery and closed up the case with the screws. It seemed to fit back just fine and it looks tight, but without that rubber square, I cant let this thing get anywhere near water.
I dread trying to communicate with omate to try and get the rubber seal, but I don't know of any other options.
The seal is a very thin ring that sits in a groove. So no seal on your's. Contacting Omate is your only option short of filling the groove with RTV silicone and hoping for the best.
I really can't believe this is happening...

The seal may be there, you just don't see it. Not trying to insult anyone here.
Long story short, I think I FUBAR'ed my SIM card slot because I had to use a nano->microSIM adaptor, when I was removing my sim card, half way out, something "snagged" the adapter, I couldn't get my SIM out so I pulled/forced it out. When I tried reinserting the SIM card, the "spring" doesn't work and my card was stuck inside...furthermore, no SIM detected so there goes that idea.
I removed the back panel and battery to get to the SIM card slot from the inside. Following Kurt's maintenance video, I removed the 2 additional screws inside to remove the "interior" cover. ONLY then did I notice the thin rubber seal around the edges.
TL;DR - maybe it's just me but I didn't notice the thin rubber seal until I further disassembled the TS.

I just looked at the "Hardware maintenance on the Omate TrueSmart" youtube video again that Kurt made, and at the 2:37 mark you will see that He just opened up the first four screws of the back case and took out the square rubber ring seal from the back cover. This was before he removed the 2 additional screws to get to the interior cover. This is what I am missing on my truesmart unit.
@fibroman
You have to be aware that there are at least three different case designs. Attached images show the area were the gasket sits on two of them as well as the gaskets side by side.
One (much older design) has a wide thick gasket. The other (newer design) has a thin narrow gasket that sits recessed in a groove.
Interesting. The 1/8/1900 I examined has the thicker gasket with the holes for the screws to go through and alignment nipples that fit into the main body. No groove.
The other, thinner, gasket looks inferior and the way the casing has been grooved is what you were saying earlier was an example of poor design ?
