If I'm not mistaken HTC's Sense UI is build on top of Android 1.5 Cupcake.
It struck me it would be nice to the the HTC UI on top on the new 2.0 Donut build.
I wondered what are the thoughts of the people on this forum on this.
Does anybody think HTC will do this and will they do it for the Hero as well as newer HTC hardware?
If HTC don't do this for the Hero would anybody else be able to? e.g. MoDaCo?
Apologies if some of my comments/questions are a bit naive or uneducated but I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Some correction:
The new Android SDK version is 1.6, not 2.0
1.6's name is Donut, Donut is not 2.0
One would hope that HTC will update the Hero firmware to Android 1.6 and beyond for as long as the hardware can take it.
If not, I'm sure MoDaCo and others will be playing with this...
well at least the next TWO android updates shouldn't be any problem for the hero and i strongly believe that HTC will provide the updates.
I mean they are doing the same with the new WiMo devices: Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 will both get official WM 6.5 updates.
I do believe that the latest MoDaco Rom has components from Donut. Not the new features, just some of the performance stuff.
It's almost an impossible task to get Sense running on Donut without it being sourced from HTC. For one, we don't have the kernel source to even make a donut build. Then you have the problem of getting htc's framework to play nice with the updated 1.6 framework. Even if you do get the htc framework (for Hero) to run on top of 1.6, Sense is still built atop 1.5, so it's no like you'll be able to use global search from Rosie, you'd get a bunch of forcecloses on settings and other key places.
We'll just have to wait for htc to either release 1.6 sense for Hero or use Tattoo's 1.6 sense and port it to Hero, by the way, anybody have a dump yet?

Thanks for the correction.
And thanks everyone for your thoughts - I'd be excited to see HTC bring 1.6 to the hero.
Well afer seeing this link:
http://www.htcheroblog.com/2009/09/25/sprint’s-htc-hero-to-launch-with-android-1-6/
which says that Sprint's Hero will already have Android 1.6, obviously running similar (if not the same) Sense UI, I don't see why it should take too long for us European Hero owners to have Sense UI smoothly running on the new 1.6 firmware. I am quite hopeful.
Tattoo is what you're looking for. It's a brighter version of Hero (grey instead of black) but has the widgets and overall appeal. Supports native QVGA resolution. Built on Donut from the start.
I'd like to figure out how to get it on a plain Donut build though.

There is already tattoo bootable port for hero youd have to unodex the whole build and port particular parts to 1.6 or change over the whole framework.apk after unodex'ing to support our 160dpi LCD screens over the tattoos 120dpi screen
gimme a second ill grab the link for this guys thread that ported tattoo for hero the rapidshare links are on page two youll have to fastboot his build its not just an update.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=564984
hes already got it going on the hero im working on mytouch(magic) and Dream right now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566501
I have a Kaiser and have Tattoo working just fine. I think it came from the Sapphire threads. Then I have 120 dpi on a QVGA screen as well. Still, I ran it at Hero's resolution and the only thing I could see was that the images were not scaled but it functioned correctly (like the slider bar was cutting off the Phone button on the home screen) so that should be easy to fix. I don't know what you mean about unodexing as I believe that they either don't need it or at the least you can just sign the file back once you've swapped images.
I'd like to know what dependencies it has with the fun of tweaking Hero is rolling over to Tattoo. I'd like SenseUI on a bare Donut to make it a little more stable.
yeah without a doubt we'll be seeing 1.6 + sense in the near future.
the android 1.6 demo suggests that android cupcake doesnt support cdma, donut will. so for the sprint hero to run at all they'll need donut.
hopefully we'll see the donut come out of the oven in the near future
I've got nothing but failed attempts at getting Hero on Cupcake and Tattoo on Donut native ROMs. Maybe someone more experienced can figure out the dependency hell involved. I don't have a MyTouch but I know my way around the ROMs. The only thing you should need is the /system folder from Tattoo and mod boot.img's init script. Or are you having issues getting Donut to run at all?
twittter
if you subsribe to htc on twitter, they usually send out updates, and from what i have been getting we will be gettign 1.6 for sure on the hero.. they just wont give us a when!
hi to the people out there i'm looking for the newset coolest roms i want to update to my phone to a new rom but i'm not sure what is out there now but i do want the newest version of windows mobile 6.5 and sense 2.5 who has it on their rom send me a link or post it. oh my phone is cdma and verizon htc touch pro.
NFS FTW!
well vzw tp suck. no ram so sense 2.5 is kinda a no go unless you want lag. but wm 6.5 is a def yes. check out NFSFAN its got sense 2.1.
His roms are blazingly fast, and wicked (boston accent ) stable. I've been using it for at least a month now.
here are da links (two different builds one is the older build with menu at top and the other at the bottom.) i prefer the top menu one cause i dont like the bottom one
Top Menu Buttons

I have not tried this one yet, but, and sense sucks in my opinion. Giggles, are you one a TP V or TP S? The rom you recommend has a 16 meg page pool! I am stuck with 4 TP V and I have listened to my wife and kids ***** for over a year about them. I always set my page pool to 6 meg but even so, every wm6.5 and 6.1 with any version + sense or any slider app has made the phone almost useless.
I used SSK 3.0 Touch Pro Visual Kitchen - Preview 2 and I loaded the second version of 6.1 and then I unchecked anything sense or icon or extra and my phone is smoking fast now. After the easy GUI built the ROM, I set the pagepool to 6 and flashed.
I use http://pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html and although I have not fully tested it nor set it up all the way, I finally have a "sense" lol of hope. I do not need all them fancy things. Plus i think http://pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html does more and it does weather with certain skins.
I mean ****, we are stuck with low memory, and with any sense stuff or slider this or that, my family and I could not answer the damn phone half the time.
i have the tp verizon i mentioned that do you know ho to use the page pool thing is it the higher the better or the other way around. and since the touch pro has some much on board ram and rom i figured if i can figure out how to use it i can set or make a rom to use as much of the ram and rom that i can
I would not set it above 6 megs fot he TP V. It has limited about of ram.
ya but the pro has more ram and rom then diamond i know from the manual on htc website it has 512 and 192 or is it 256 but then again the service manual said 288 i gonna just do a test and see what happens.
i gotta verizon touch pro.
NFSFAN's rom works wonderfully on my tp with 16mb pagepool (its prob cause i dont use sense) titanium looks just like the zune os, and me likey the zune
... but yeah i don't think i mentioned that i hate sense/manila.
um yah, sorry bout that XD.
NFSFAN running just titanium has about 61% used at startup with 16mb pagepool. so yeah do some tweaking around with the pagepool and you'll find something you like.
Just a little tid-bit, i hate sense because its a RAM hog, and our vzw tp don't have lots of RAM so yeah, find a way to partition SD Card storage toward RAM and then we'll talk.
hey i gonna do so experimenting and see what happend to see just how much i can save.

You wouldn't happen to have the SSK kitchen available? His site doesn't exist anymore and can't find a download.
Alright, was thinking of getting the Flyer but I don't know if I would want it without an AOSP build on it. I mean it's cool, but it seems that this tablet would look beautiful with ICS or just vanilla android in general. I like sense but not enough to have a tablet with it.
So, are the devs planning any work on ICS or is it a dead cause?
I can't speak for every developer, but I don't think you will get a lot of takers to put in the vast amount of time an effort to build yet another vanilla tablet ROM when the Sense widgets and Stylus APIs add quite a bit to the Flyer and for some Sense widgets, there are no equal replacement widgets on the market. why bother, if someone doesn't want to use the Sense widgets and launcher, just don't use them, they hurt nothing in the background. And you cannot build a true working AOSP ROM anyway because you are always dependent on the hardware vendors drivers and kernel.
Just run the Flyer with ADW EX launcher or Launcher Pro if you like it better. Works fine that way.
Ill just say that I am NOT a fan of sense in general. I would never want it on a phone and run cyanogen on my evo 4g. BUT it actually works really well on the flyer. I wasn't a big fan of the sense launcher, so I'm running adw, but all of the other sense apps really add functionality to the tablet.
I'm a Rom whore on phones, but I'm still running the stock software (2.3.4) on my flyer because of works so well.
Just get a flyer and enjoy what's in my opinion the best tab available by far.

Although we do not have the strongest developer base ever. We still do have developers that do work hard for us. I'm not saying that we're going to have developers that will build ICS for us, but what I can say that it would not be a stretch to port ICS from DHD, G2/DZ, MT4G. I can say this because I have seen the GB flyer port to my G2 and it should not be hard to do it the other way around. So really we just need to wait until one of those phones gets ICS or if Cyanogen decides to build for us. We'll get it eventually it will just be a matter of when. The whole I like sense vs. I don't like sense argument does not apply here, because this is android and we will have a choice between the two. We'll most likely also get an HTC sense build of ICS from HTC, but that may take a little time.
while i am enjoying my flyer with homeycomb/sense i have to agree. as much as i love htc devices,i really hate htc sense. id very much like some sort of AOSP rom as well- it really surprised me to not see any cm7 ports,or even official cm support.
i personally dont use any sense widgets or apps. simply running a different launcher doesnt get rid of sense. you still have sense contacts, keyboard, email, etc. sure you can get 3rd party apps for all those things, but that makes the appready huge footprint of the sense rom even bigger.
AOSP seems smoother and faster on my other htc devices, and id prefer it on my flyer as well. id like to learn how to port roms to different devices,so i could have cm7,8,or 9
I would love to see ICS make its way onto the Flyer. But with how long it's taken HTC to give us a HC update, I'm relying more on Cyanogen than anything else.
Being a guy who is seriously considering this sexy tablet myself.
I have been wondering if there would be an ICS port although an official seems unlikely.
I don't "need" a tablet, but a device to read manga on and watch videos every so often would be nice.
This is the smoothest tablet I've ever seen (I like it more than any other tablet I've seen.. including ipad 2, galaxy tab ect ect)
Decided to get nook tablet instead.

We're not talking about an OG phone here with limited memory. The Flyer has gob of memory. Sense runs great on the flyer. While It might make you "feel" better to think you are running an AoSP ROM, there's nothing that makes it perform better. I would never give up the Pen or email and other widgets that sense has that no one else has for a good feeling. It doesn't make Sense.
ICS seems to be a close relative of Honeycomb.
I am hoping that the delay in releasing HC for Flyer officially is that HC is being cancelled and work is instead shifiting to ICS.
From what I see of ICS, I would take it over HC with Sense.
My guess is that no one is working on an ICS Mod for us.
hm.. gotta agree... there is no point in getting a rom if you actually are losing functionality... kinda the opposite direction of what most people hope for.
Especially sine 2.3.4 is a pretty decent version.

to each his own... i dont use the pen. i dont use any sense widgets. i like the way AOSP looks and feels, and the way the menus and native apps look. i dont like sense, and even if performance is exactly the same, *I* would enjoy *MY* flyer alot more if i had AOSP roms for it.
just my personal opinion... some folks like sense and sense widgets, and theres nothing wrong with that. but theres nothing wrong with prefering the look and feel of AOSP,either.

I think you mean you've bought the wrong tablet.
You have to know HTC == Sense. Just don't buy HTC if you complain about Sense.
With all the ICS Alpha ports popping up these days, even on the HTC HD and such, I would not be surprised to see a repackage bootable of ICS for the Flyer soon. These came around for the Old color Nook in Honeycomb flavor, but never fully worked. The problem is they stay about about 70% working until HTC releases the ICS kernel and drivers. Nice to see how they look but things like camera, Bluetooth, video playback and phone don't work. Who knows? Maybe one of the tapped in developers can even patch together a working kernel from the current HTC source code. Since Google released the main OS source, things could get wild.
digital, you are correct, sdk ports rarely amount to anything useable and worthwhile. source code is needed to really get all the functionality.

i know htc very well. i dont ever buy a device for the software it runs, since everything i own gets rooted and ROMed. i buy htc because i like the hardware, and i like the way they "work". i bought the flyer because i like messing with htc products.
lots of folks dont understand my fondness for htc,but my dislike of sense. as i stated,im enjoying my flyer very much with sensified HC. i dont mind sense in small doses , and and if AOSP roms were available,id prolly flip flop back and forth between them. not complaining,im not wishing i hadnt bought it. all i did was agree with the OP in that i also have a strong preference for AOSP.
again, nothing wrong with liking sense. nothing wrong with not liking it either.
Sense 4.0 for Android ICS in the works for 2012.
All quads from the HTC are going to feature Beats Audio. They are also to have HTC Sense 4.0

To each his own, but when you have a vast majority who bought this for what it is and not what it can be hacked to, you're pretty much in the minority. So if you want the latest and greatest vanilla that breaks functionality most of us want, then you better bone up on your development skills.

This article claims that the Flyer will be shown by HTC in February running ICS.
Rumor has it that, in the coming months, HTC will unveil the first tablet underpinned by the new Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core platform. It seems that the HTC quad-core tablet will be revealed at Mobile World Congress 2012, event that takes place in Barcelona, in late February. Of course, the information is not official, bit it seems that it’s coming from a source close to the situation. Anyway, a lot of things can change in three months. At the Catalonian event, HTC will also reveal the Flyer and Jetstream models with stylus support and running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

That makes sense, honeycomb source code is a subset of ICS so most of the hard work is already done. Can't wait for stable HC. IcS Will come in due time.

I know there is alot of debate on the entire skins vs AOSP, ive decided to write my reasons for sticking with Sense instead of AOSP. we all know sense was introduced to make android faster and eaiser to use it was great but as android started to grow the need for sense started shritting away, that was until sense 4.0, but ive always been a fan of sense from my first android phone, Evo 4G then Evo 3D and now with the Evo LTE. i can say ive experanced every major release of sense dare i say from TouchFlo (and TF3D), 1.0, 1.1, 2.1, 3.0, 3.5, 3.6, 4.0, 4.1 and even played with Sense 4.5. ive seen sense evolve througout the year and while i do admit it may be a memory hog (Shivers at WinMo 6.1 TouchFlo 3D) i cant just help but also admit it's beauty. i honestly feel not only sense adds slight improvemnts to the software (I.E. First with the "Sync Widget" and the photo Grid Widget and even the ionic sense weather/clock, native facebook intergration). Now to the things i appricate about sense, the camera interface. I find AOSP camera to be boring and plain, sense camera's have always been something beautiful to look at with added features like distoration, hot, cold, thermal, greyscale, Dots even 3D, and now with the ImageSense chip to handle camera processing it just got even better. another thing i used to love about sense was the email client, while i have to admit it had sync issues(I.E. MSN email were still marked unread on PC) it has a beautiful yet user friendly interface,SMS/MMS also shared this. The Status Bar has always had solid icons, i refuse to theme the status bar because alot of themes feel out of place Huge numbers on battery out of place icons ETC. the sense browser has always been in my top 3 brower list, it soild smooth and wordwrap is a benifit i wish chrome & Stock had. one thing i find underrated is 4.x multitasking. HTC designed recent apps based on what many users loved. WebOS card's. HTC took the card idea and tossed there taste into it. Sense Gives android a clean cut feel to it, it is beautiful (had if HTC would've Given us the extra gig of ram it would have been even snappier). Now some improvements i would like to see in sense are pretty simple, First id like to see the Holo effect i admire HTC for giving us a pretty much Stock Dock but sense is missing the Holo Effect which in my opinion is an amazing feature in AOSP, also as mentioned above, an extra Gig of ram would'nt hurt us but i think HTC will leanr from the X line and add addtional Ram in the future.
EDIT:
i would also like to include im not bashing AOSP, but for my phone i prefer Sense where on my TF i prefer AOSP

I'm really mad they tied that ImageSense chip into the SenseUI. By the time anyone in AOSP manages to merge it, the phone will be outdated.

As far as I know they already have ._.
I tried AOSP out a few days ago (CM10) and I was able to take pictures while recording video, and picture taking was about as fast as normal.
I also heard that they merged it into AOSP awhile back.
But I could be wrong on what the ImageSense chip is in charge of, but I thought it handled that.
All that was required was porting the libs over and they have successfully merged the libraries already. There are still some things that can't be done yet. At this point the underpinnings are there but the software has to catch up
2 things:.
1. AOSP browser has word wrap. If you mean text reflow (like, a column maintaining screen width at any zoom level).
2. You LIKE sense 4 multitasking?!
How? It DOESNT multitask. It closes everything as soon as you leave it. Hell, zeppelinrocks and others have been working long trying to fix it.
I feel like I just stepped into bizarro world.

Nah, CM10 uses the stock Android camera; they'd have to engineer the drivers for that chip from scratch. The ImageSense chip speeds things up dramatically and does a great deal of image processing... Supposedly they're legally required to eventually release the source for it, but the way things go it doesn't end up getting released until the device is nearing EOL, if at all. Please note that I have no inside information on this, this is just what I've picked up on these boards, as it's an important topic to me. As much as I like CM10, I don't like the idea of software that gimps my hardware.
^^^^^^^ what do you mean, "nah" ?
Yes, you absolutely can take stills while video recording in AOSP. I'm on AOKP and just did it.
I will say that in sense, taking a still while recording resulted in a pic that was crisper and sharper than any standalone pic I could take , while in AOSP, the still from video tends to be a bit blurry for me.
hurled from my AOKP'd Evo LTE. Enjoy.
I guess I'll add my opinion into this. I'm honestly a big sense fan. I've used the galaxy nexus for a few weeks, and tried out the galaxy S III. Now, what I love about AOSP is that everything is fast, and it works extremely well. (At least for the galaxy nexus.) I'm not a big fan of how much of a memory hog sense is, nor its bizarre multitasking, but I love the way sense integrates social networks. I'm a huge, facebook/tweeter users, and I hated how stock Android doesn't have as many options as Sense to integrate the two. Everything was centered around Google Plus, and none of the people I talk to are on Google plus, so it's pretty much useless to me. SO, Social network integration is a plus for me, as far as sense is concerned. Also, I love the little nuances in the design, like the weather animation, and widgets. I just only wish, sense wasn't so laggy, and HTC added some of the extras that you find in Touchwiz on the Galaxy S III.
I agree, I like sense more than touchwiz. I had the first galaxy s, and I liked a few of the added customizations, and I've played around with the s3. It's a very nice phone with a lot of little options. The one thing I like the most about touchwiz is the contacts, swipe left on a name to call and swipe right to message (or vice versa, can't remember). That's a nice little touch. Other than that and the lack of good multitasking, I think sense is very nice and user friendly.
I like sense but sometimes I get this crazy long lag when loading my text messages. Doesn't happen all the time and seems pretty random but its not just text messages. Sometimes it happens opening people or when trying to create a new message, it doesn't auto fill who I'm looking up for a good 15 seconds. Annoying and I'm pretty sure it's sense's fault. I had CM7 on my og Evo for about a year and I like stock android, got the Nexus 7 and it's great. I'm running stock on my Evo LTE and I'm not rooted but I'm seriously thinking about it just to get rid of that lag, it's rare enough that I might just update to jellybean when it comes out and hope it's fixed because it didn't do it until my first update. Also it takes way to long to launch sense when you've been in the browser for a while and hit home. Loading... Loading...

This is the first time I've ever used a Samsung phone, and I've had it since release day, but... I really hate the UI. It takes me way more clicks to get to things I used to use all the time on my HTC 10 with significantly less effort. It also looks pretty ugly in comparison, has anyone successfully ported any elements of Sense (particularly the Clock/Weather widget and launcher) to work on Samsung devices?
I came from a HTC 10 and, honestly? Not seeing what your problem is. I've set mine up the exact same way I had it on the 10 and it takes the same amount of time to get to things. I swipe up, all my apps are in folders, and I go to the one I need. Or I have a set amount in the edge display, but I keep forgetting about that.
Having said that, you wont be able to port Sense in the sense that it is a launcher that will just run without problems. I mean, you could try installing the HTC Sense APK, but as I said ... problems. It probably won't work.
There are a plethora of apps that are close reproductions of the clocks and other things. I've not found myself missing anything about HTC Sense though. I did, a while ago, wonder if someone had created an older HTC Sense theme for any launcher (I'm taking the Rosie HTC Sense) but nothing was there. More sort of pleased to be having a better working phone. I had issues with the 10 Camera and Wifi/Mobile signal that I am so glad are gone.
These screenshots are pretty much exactly how I had my 10 set up. And if anything, I think looks better. If you hate the way the default looks, find a theme. It might take a while, you have to pay for a lot of the decent ones (one of my few contentions with the S9+ / Samsung themes) but they're there.

It was ported to other Samsung devices but I have not seen aport for this device yet.
I would google around. If the port worked on other device it would prolly work on this one. They person that posted it put up all the files needed to simulate Sense.

what was the last known model it was ported to?
Thus far, the current samsung experience has been pretty close to the last version of HTC Sense that I used (Oreo on HTC 10). Its much cleaner, simpler, and so on. Whereas TouchWiz in the past has been ... not brilliant, in comparison.
