Wifi Tethering? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my brand spanking new HTC Hero and started filling it up with apps and games, but i fail to find a wifi tether option..
I know i read it was suppose to be done, but i fail to realise exactly how to achieve this..
Do you guys have any input?
i was hoping to be able to use the phone as a 3g modem when im away from home but the included usb drivers are windows only (using mac)..

the tethering built in is only USB tethering. is there nothing in the market?
now that the hero can be rooted, i am sure something must be out there....

The people at http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether have a tethering app, but unfortunately it doesn't work for the Hero yet: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=122

Internet Sharing Wifi Data?

Is it possible to use ICS with wifi connection instead of cellular connection? Would be useful for a makeshift wireless adapter if your regular NIC or wireless NIC fails.
It seems that even if I have a wifi connection already going and then I launch ICS and connect, it still tries to dial out and use the cellular connection. You would think if it can share cellular data it could share wifi data just as easily but maybe im missing something.
Back in the early days of WiFi internet sharing the private interface was changed to WiFi with a manual registry edit. It might be possible to change the public interface to USB instead of defaulting too the cellular radio. It would probably take a fair amount of troubleshooting, but I'd think it would be possible. I think the entries were at HKLM\Comm\ConnectionSharing. Might be a starting point...
Search for WMWifiRouter
WiFiRouter
WiFiRouter works by making your ppc into a virtual access point. Then you can share the internet through it.
Last time I looked however, the author had withdrawn the program from circulation at version 0.91. There must be some problems with it because the author indicated that he would release a new version once he ironed out some bugs. If it is not back in distribution yet, you might be still able to find it on a torrent site. If not, PM me and I will send you the cab. Some of the cab collections at ppcgeeks ftp have it inside too. One good collection to check is Alex's.
I have used it and it works.

wmwifirouter is not what he's looking for. That is still using your phones internet. He wants to see how he could use the phone as a Network card, using the wifi connection, as oppossed to the sprintpcs connection.
I too would be very interested in this happening, if anyone knows of a way please tell.
ok, but why ??
Why would you actually want to do this anyway ??? I will look into it but it makes no sense when a USB WiFi dongle is $30 or so and does not run your phone down to use it, why would you want to use your phone as a very expensive USB WiFi card ??? Maybe I am missing some golden benefit ????
I dont get it either, but he did say in an emergency if your wifi went out.
Thank you for the responses.
Yes, it would be useful if your wireless nic went out (or regular nic for that matter) just to have something to use for the moment. Or maybe you brought your computer to a friends house and hes out of ports or you dont want to run 50ft cable to his kitchen table
But the titan has wireless, it has internet sharing, why doesnt the wireless show up in the list of available networks? I'm not saying its an all important feature but it would be yet another cool thing your phone could do.
i looking to use my mogul as a wifi access point (sharing Spint Vision thru wifi)
i tryed the procedure to mod the registry to enable it but i cant get it to work.
anyone know the exact procedure for the mogul
btw i also checked out WMWifiRouter...looks like it's no longer free
I also wanna know
Look the idea is simple. So where is the phone ICS telling it to use the celluar line and not allowing the option of the wifi?
Pls any one contact me. Its a cool feature for a phone

I bought software called Walking Hotspot, which essentially turns my Mogul/Titan into something like a Mifi, sharing my cellular data with my laptop. Otherwise known as tethering.
I only use it for emergencies because I am not sure if Sprint can tell that I am tethering. I believe if Sprint detects unauthorized tethering they will charge 4 cents per kilobyte of data .. which is very harsh!

USB tether?

Does anyone manage to get USB tether working using any one of the ROM?
This was touched on briefly in another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842842), but mostly on wifi tether, and I have not seen any recent posts on this topic. I want to use the gtablet for school and work and USB tethering would be an absolute necessity; any help and assistance on this would be most apprecative.
There are only drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux for USB tether, so doubtful it would work. I tried it anyway, even though I knew the result. Still can not get wifi tether to work.

Sorry, I've been swamped last few days... well the last month actually... but Send me your current /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf file as I can use your current saved networks to build you a working set of files for wifi tether... I'll PM you my email in case I didn't already...
I'm not sure what usb host support has been built so far. My understanding is that in theory the linux network driver should be able to be used in android with some work ofcourse.
I'm not going to root my Gtablet right away so I'll have to wait to see if someone figures out how to wire/wireless tether while it's stock. My rooted Droid 1 is getting bored. LOL

I know this is an old thread, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with USB tethering at all.
+1 interest in this, or bluetooth tethering. My company is PCI compliant and has wifi blockers all over the building
does ad-hoc run over the same frequencies as wifi?
Client devices that use ad-hoc wifi are licensed for the same FCC spectrum as devices that only use infrastructure wifi, so that makes me assume they use the same frequencies.
I'm only aware of two tethering solutions on android yet, but i'm a noob so there may be more:
1) the wpa supplicant patch. This allows the Android device to tether as a client to another adhoc wifi sharing device.
2) pdanet. This allows the Android device to tether as a server to another non-android client, via bluetooth or USB.
So far, nothing I've seen supports USB tethering client on Android. For now, with your use case I'd recommend a more mature OS like WinXP. With the right software, WinXP can serve as a USB tether client to most modern phones.
Bump...
Would like to be able to USB tether when honeycomb comes out. But would be awesome if it happened earlier.
second that request. USB tethering is so much easier than WiFi hotspotting, not to mention it's free with my current T-mobile plan
Same here. I use ICS via USB tethering from my HTC Touch Diamond to my PC and will get a gTablet when I can use it similarly as a client.
i second this
All of us married folk who are pushed for both time and money (but are still tech adventurous) would love some clear directions (or a script or app) for tethering to their DUN capable regular phones by either BT or USB.
Many thanks in advance to whoever takes up the challenge...
G tablet currently running vegan beta5.1
I concur on this. I use PDAnet with my original droid to tether to laptop. Unfortunately, PDAnet can't be used on Vegan Ginger which I am running on my gTab. Any help would be much appreciated!

From my searching thru Google I found out that the original Droid can bluetooth tether to the Xoom. Not to sure what gives the ability for that to happen but it works. If it's code specific then maybe some tinkering with that might get it to work but if it's hardware specific..again I'm just throwing it out there.
BT tethering is very doable depending on your phone. I use PDANET on my Droid X.
For some deeper info (including a script to get it started on the G-Tab) Look here:

Good friend trying to use modem to get internet on her XP computer

Hey guys long time no see. im usually in the Android Kiaser section, but I got a different question for today. A good friend of mines recently got a old computer. It had a lot of viruses on it and I cleaned them out. Once I was done with that, I had her o/s up and it was running a lot faster than before.
Anyway, she wanted to use her Optimus T as a modem because she doesnt have internet connection or DSL in her house. She is a genius and all, so she picks up stuff very fast . especially in IT and computers .
Well she followed the tethering instructions for XP and downloaded it to her phone. She then hooked it up to her computer and when we searched for the file, it was there but it could not be launched.
Now I advised eher to come here and ask you guys for help, but she is very prideful and wants to figure it out on her own. Now if this were a simple hardwre issue no problem . but since this is a networking issue , and well you guys are far more experienced in these matters, I was wondering if theren were a special program she needed or something like that for her computer to properly launch the program needed for her phone to go online
Well I used to be in the same boat With the internet. Although It wasn't a smartphone. The solution i came up with after days of trying was the phone in question needed an initialization command pointing to the apn of the phone. This was accomplished with no special software just windows built in capability, on a standard sp 2 machine. I would try my optimus but i have win 7 x64. Anyway not sure whether it helps or not but the proper initialization command would be something like AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”epc.tmobile.com” the number to dial should be " *99# "
The post below me is also good. It is usb network instead of modem.

You basically have two options to go about doing this. Switch on Data on your phone ..
1. Connect the phone via the USB cable and select the LG PC suite application, under Tools there is a option of Internet connection using Phone.
OR
2. Connect the phone via the USB cable, do not run the LG suite, instead on the phone in Settings -> Wifi & networks Use the portability and tethering option. The first option is USB tethering, the second is Wifi. Just select the USB one. THis will create a local network between the phone and computer and allow you to access the internet ...
Cheers !

..Well third option is to use P500 as a bluetooth modem to access Internet.
You have to pair the devices and use bluetooth dialup profile. This post is sent that way from my Compaq nx8220 laptop
use pdanet
I'm trying to tether my fatheta optimus but it can't find the Ethernet control module (ecm) drivers. I Google searched for.the drivers with no luck is there any place were I can get that driver.

[Q] Good mods for the Evo3D to tether Chromebook

Hello XDA,
it's it's time for me to root my EVO3D.
I'm actually pretty happy with HTC's widgets and the setup I have now, but the phone is sluggish and I can't stand Sprint's apps that show up every time I upgrade.
I rooted my old phone in the past (it was an HTC hero) successfully with cyanogen, but the last time I checked this mod doesn't exist for the 3D, at least not a stable one. I liked cyanogen because it was really well balanced, slick and fast. I need something as transparent as possible. I'd also like to be able to use the 3D camera if possible, but if I have to give it up for a really good mod, I don't really mind.
The most important thing for me is tethering. I am about to get the new Chromebook and I need it to recognize the phone and tether through it. Does anyone here have any experience with it? I'm using EasyTether for now which has been really good to me, but there's no way to install it to a chromebook without some development patch which I don't think I want to apply right off the box.
So, what do you guys suggest? What is a fast Mod? I would def. need the Google App package, but I really don't need any car-related set up or apps (I live in NYC) and I don't care about radio or sports TV or any of the other Sprintcrap.

You should be able to use the Wi-Fi Tether app from the Play Store except on Sense 4.x ROM's if you are rooted, and if not you can try FoxFi in bluetooth mode (wi-fi is not supported on the Evo 3D). ClockworkMod Tether is similar to Easy Tether and doesn't require root, but again there are no drivers to support the Chromebook as a client.

Ramjet,
Which Rom would you suggest then? There are a couple of choices and I'm just not sure where to begin. Just to be clear, I don't need the phone to pick up Wi Fi, as the chromebook can do it itself; I need to be able to use the dataplan, preferably with the usb cable because it keeps the phone charged for longer periods.
Thanks!

The problem is finding the drivers for your Chromebook to use a USB tethering program. As long as your phone is rooted you can use Wi-Fi Tether with your phone connected via USB to charge, and even use it as an access point for other devices at the same time should the need arise.
Regarding the ROM, most 3.6 Sense ROM's run Wi-Fi Tether fine, but if you want to narrow it down you can be the guinea pig for our new ROM Information Thread.

Well I now rooted my phone and I'm trying to play with the wifi tether, but my chromebook won't connect. I see it under networks and it tries to connect, but can't. Any suggestions?

Warning about the 4.3 update: PdaNet+ not working

Might be too late to warn about this, but the 4.3 over-the-air update has broken PdaNet+ for me. Others may have the same problem.
I believe this is an issue with windows not recognizing the phone properly. I had to manually run windows update and it downloaded htc drivers. Your computer should recognize the phone as "my htc" if it's working properly.

The latest drivers were brought in with HTC Sync, I think. The phone was recognized properly and all, as before. PdaNet was just unable to connect from computer to phone.
Not to hijack this thread but has anyone actually run into the data cap for wifi hotspot w/ T-Mobile? I supposedly get 500MB of tethering w/ my plan, but today alone I've used over 500MB and well over a gig in this billing cycle. Is this something actively being enforced? Just curious.
OP is right, it's not working anymore. It recognizes my phone fine but when I have usb debugging and pda net and usb tether enabled and try to connect on pda net desktop it keeps asking me to "Please start pdanet on your phone and enable USB Tether mode"
I've also noted that there doesn't seem to be a way to disable the HTC Sync while keeping USB debugging on. Perhaps that is the culprit here?
Having the exact same problem described - the desktop client asks to start pdanet on my phone even though it's already on and usb mode is active. I tried using easy tether lite, but that does not hide mobile data usage. Has anyone else tried any othe app/any luck getting pdanet to work after the 4.3 update?
The 4.3 update also broke Wifi Tether too!
But I am lucky now Tmo is giving 2.5gb for hotspot with my $70 prepaid plan.
Has anybody found a workaround or know if June Fabrics Software intends to update to fix this?
Lets give pdanet some time to update

Same thing happened to me. I was rather miffed. When looking about for a solution, I installed ClockworkMod Tether, and it worked. It's a 10 day trial, though. After 10 days you have to upgrade to the full version for $4.99. Still a good deal.
I remembered reading somewhere that FoxFi might work if you installed the dedicated FoxFi app instead of using the version built into PdaNet+. I gave that a try, and it did work for me as long as I changed the user agent string in my browser. I bought PdaNet a long time ago and received an activation code, which I used to activate the full version of FoxFi.
Finally I bought a VPN subscription for $30 a year. Now I can tether away wirelessly and not have to worry about my user agent string. My tethering speeds also went up, though this coincided with the network fix that solved the issue with extreme throttling on large downloads. Still, I should have gotten a VPN ages ago. It rocks.
BTW, my One is not rooted and is running stock 4.3.
I get the same problem with my galaxy s4 it says device can't be reach to something like that any help I don't like 4.3 I'd rather go to 4.w again
