That's 'cos it isn't an option - you have to repartition your card and then A2SD (built into MCR2.2) moves your apps when it detects the ext3 partition.
You need to partition your SD card using computer, the phone itself can only 'format' the card which is no good. As per http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/A2SD:
The SDcard will need two partitions, the first Fat / Fat32 & the second Ext2 For the Ext2 partition I wouldn't go higher than 1.5GB cuz you may run into some issues. I was staying around the 500MB / 750MB area & it was working nice. As all the guides I've read state not to exceed the 1.5GB Marker.

Although a lot of guides say to use Ext3, Ext2 works fine for me. Remember, only newly (re)installed apps will be put onto the SD card- the old ones stay on the phone's own memory.

Incorrect if using MCR2.x; preinstalled apps are also moved.
Only if moving from an earlier Modaco ROM, everyone else has to wipe first. If Fezy had not partitioned his card first then his apps would be installed to internal memory and I don't think that partitioning the card subsequently will cause those apps to be moved to it.
Hi thanks for all replies your assistant is much appreciated. As i'm new to android (coming from symbian) I was doing so much research i ended up getting confused with all the stuff i saw. But just the day before yesterday actually realised what you just said. I had decided to manually create a partition on computer and did it up to ext 3 etc but thought it didnt work because again i tried to use da apps2sd application to move the apps ( i know "what a noob") and hadn't realised that the applications had alrdy transferred (i only realsied later when i saw 93mb of free phonestorage space) so i ended up doing it all again and as u can gess i lost all my applications lolz, but i had a backup created beforehand so it worked ou .
Thanks again for the help shluggity and squiffsquiff really appreciate it guys.
p.s all the preinstalled apps got moved first time hence me losing all the apps when i tried it again.

hy everyone...
i have my Hero rooted, and I pushed Superuser.apk and everything is fine...
but, I can't make apps2sd working...
can anyone help me with this...
thanks a lot..
You'd probably have to be a bit more specific about what isn't working for people to be able to help you.
However, a common thing I've heard with apps2sd which might be your problem is the following: the phone actually has to store some of the application in the phone itself even if the majority of the application is on the SD card. Therefore it can appear like your application is on the phone even with apps2sd working properly. The way to check this would be to check how much space is available on the phone, download and install a large program from the market and then see if the decrease in space available on the phone is the same as the size of the program you downloaded.
Well steve...
I formated my Hero last night, wiped it clean, and than i rooted it and pushed 'su' and 'Superuser.apk' and every thing is working. moved my cache into sd...
and i partitioned my 4GB SD card into 3 partitions:
1. 100MB Linux-swap
2. 512MB ext2
3. the rest into Fat32
I rebooted my Hero, it did recognize my SD.
but still apps2sd does not work...
1st edition of the application gives me that my SD isn't formatted properly and the second edition comes to the reboot button and doesn't reboot...
NOT WORKING
i can reformat my second partition (ext2) to ext3 or ext4 but don't know will it help...
Should I update my Firmware..?!

I think rooting alone is not enough to get A2SD to work. You actually need the app A2SD in the /system/bin folder of your phone. Why don't you simply flash Modacos rom 2.6 which comes with automatic support for A2SD? For that, you would need Ext3 partition.
thanks salmanbodla
my problem is that I am on the move all the time...
don't have wireless connection in the car or train for my laptop all the time, and can't use the phone alone to do that,,,

I can't think of a simpler way than the one I suggested. Seriously, it is very quick... all you need is to download the right stuff from these forum's (Hero Android Development) as well as the Android SDK so that you can use ADB (if required... that's actually optional). Can you not wait until your next day off ad try it then?
))
yes, I can wait...
thanks a lot
I just want to thank everyone who tried to help me...
I downloaded Modaco's 2.7 ROM and updated my phone... Now everything is working perfectly... all three partitions are working, the phone is fast, and has a lot of memory...
there are some new stuff on it... its good )
now I can travel with all my emails working perfect, and all apps and maps...
and no worries that my phone will tell there is a shortage in the memory...
Hi,
I'm getting low on space message on my hero running VillainRom 6.1. Tried rebooting, still there. I've only tried to install one or 2 apps with the message there, so not sure if thats actually been affected.
settings-->sdcard & phone storage-->internal storage shows 14.83mb
quick system info shows:
sd card storage free 2.14gb
a2sd storage 249mb free (total 457mb)
system cache 129mb free
memory 37.35mb free
there doesn't seem to be any more processes running than usual - only around 3-4.
I do have quite a lot of apps, over 100, probably closer to 200, I havent counted.
btw thanks to everyone on this site, I'm new to flashing roms but having fun learning, and my phones definitely got a new lease of life.
use the apps2sd checker to make sure its working. If it is id say increase your partition from 512 to more
Just because the app is installed on the sd card (assuming its working properly) doesn't mean the davilk cache for the app has moved. unless you move this as well (which isn't really recommended) each time you install an app system memory will still go down a little.

a2sd check script says its working fine, also checked via adb shell.
This is what I then did to the partition size:
I copied SD card contents (both partitions) into ubuntu.
then I put SD back into phone and repartitioned using 1gb for ext2
then I copied back SD card contents from ubuntu.
I assumed this would work, but when I booted I was getting FC all the time. Bart backup sorted it out but I am still left wondering why this method of increasing partition size didnt work??
In any case quick system info shows a2sd has more space, but still got low space message.

would you by any chance out of interest know why copying ext2 contents from sdcard as outlined above didnt work? - may have some future relevance if changing/upgrading roms.

this is because the ramon recovery image had been linked with ext2 with a 512mb partition and u selected 1gb. im not quite sure about that.
chnagin rom is quite simple beucase you have to is
1.backup using nandroid
2.make sure you wipe everything. (also battery and rotating settings)
3. Re partition your sdcard to hold 1 ext2 partition and last partition should be the rest in fat32
4. Flash the rom you want through "zip file from sd card"
5. Reboot.
im a newb so i dont have much knowledge but patching up problems that i had, so that i can help others.
it can be pain especailly rooting!!!
So thats how you would flash a rom, but what if you wanted to keep your a2sd apps? So you dont have to install them all over again in the new rom when you wiped everything.
I think I read somewhere that it should be possible to leave the contents of ext2 as it is, and that should carry forward to the next rom, but I havent been able to test it myself yet.
Hi,
Recently rooted my hero after losing impatience waiting 6 months for htc to get their finger out.
Used cronosdroid and now using villianrom 10.2 final but will no doubt try out modaco in some point too.
Anyway, I would like to know if it is possible to save and run my apps from the sdcard?
I hear this will be possible using 2.2 but have heard that something called a2sd allows this functionality also?
If so, could anyone point me in the right direction to get a total noobs guide to installing and using a2sd and how I would then go about deleting the apps from the phone's internal memory and just running them from the sd card?
Many thanks for any help and advice you are able to share,
Cheers.
So you have already installed Amon Ra 1.6.2 yeah?
Check out BTDAG's guide in my signature,... The apps2sd bit is about half way down the 1st post, in grey writing.
I downloaded something called quick system info from the market and it says that a2sd is there giving me 457mb total and 423mb free.
I went through that long drawn out procedure (as a result of being on t-mobile uk) and used amon ra and created a gold card etc.
My Problem is, I dont know how to "use" this a2sd functionality.
I want to basically download from the market and save to the sdcard and run the apps from the sdcard and am unsure how to do this?
It doesn't do it automatically as I get to the usual memory low message after downloading 50-100 apps, so presumably the apps are still saving to the phones internal memory.
Basically, I want to know how to save and run from the sdcard and delete from the phones memory if thats possible as I think is the whole point of a2sd?

If you followed my guide correctly it will be working. You can check that with the other script in my guide. If you're still running out of memory it is because the dalvik is still stored on the SD card.
Ok,.. So you need to be using a custom ROM with apps2sd enabled. Then once that is on your phone, you just need to partition the SD (like it says in the guide)... thats it!

How do I move the dalvik to the phones internal memory?
I presume I followed the guide correctly as i've come from t-mobile touch g2 on 1.5 and am now using 2.1 villain rom and cronos rom before that but am still running out of memory, even with partitioning my sd card.
presumably then its the dalvik located on the sd card?

Hello XDA. A few months ago I partitioned my 2GB SD-card to use with a custom made 2.1 ROM I used to have and I have not changed this partitioning ever since, I've been using it with MiniCM and it works alright.
My question is: Could I or could I not partition it back to FAT so I don't have any ext without problems? Or do I need to reinstall MiniCM if I installed it with an ext partition?

One thing you need to check is if you have chosen 'internal memory' as the place to download applications that you may have downloaded/installed after installing CM1.In that case, choose the 'move to phone' option so that you don't have any apps stored on your ext partition. As long as you have stored apps either in the phone or external which is the FAT partition, there will be no problem at all in getting rid of the partition.Personally,I have never liked any of these ext partitions because I think they slow down the apps stored on them!
...do press the thanks button if this helps...........
Please clearly state which ROM are you going to flash, and the current partition details, partition(s) and size, filesystem ;-)
what is the ext2/ext3 partitions being used for ? are they only for setup new roms or for use while running the device?
i havent noticed any change with or without ext3 partition beside the low space left on the 2gb memory card...

ext partitions are required to install apps2sd or link2sd so that you can store downloaded applications there instead of clogging your phone memory. These are not required if your OS is Froyo and higher since there is a native apps2sd which helps you move applications to the main FAT portion off the sd card.

So, first of all, a big hello to the community! Spent the last 2 hours digging around the forum, as I'm a new user and I'm amazed with this big things Galaxy has to add! I came from a Symbyan platform, and the only thing I done was Flash my Nokia 5800 with a C6 FW by PHNT.
Few days ago, I moved to this awsome Android world, where I see alot fo stuff new to my eyes, and that I wish some replys from you guys.
You all gonna say this questions are answered elsewhere, but I digged the forum, and I find the most various kind of answers for the same questions, which I'm now pretty much confused.
The thing is, I want to apply this CM7.1(or , dunno which is better), from what I see, it improves greatly our Galaxy Ace, but on the other hand, I saw a post that says taht this is simple as Root(Which I've done already), and apply a CWM or something, and apply the CM7.1 same way as Rooting.
The fulcral questions is which is the safest(and noobier-frindly) way to apply that CM 7.1?
Also if someone can aid me, what CWM does exactly? Its a backup app like TitaniumBackup?
I think you did not read This my friend.
And CWM is a custom recovery which has a lot more features than stock recovery.
CWM5 can be found Here
The tutorial is at the first link I gave you. But if you didn't understand,
I'll tell you step-by-step
1. Download the rom and CWM and put it in your phone.
2. Enter recovery and choose install zip from SD then choose CWM.
3. Reboot and enter recovery again.
4. Your now in CWM Recovery, before flashing any rom, doa wipe data.
5. Choose install zip fom SD card and choose CM7.1/2
reboot then voila
Hited Thanks for you!
Really helpfull thread! How did I missed it lol!
So the thing taht really caught my attention was the option to don't waste internal memory, which is exactly the only reason I wanted to Cyan Mod.
If it's not a hassle to you, can you pinpoint me the EXACT file to run from CWM? I really don't wanna mess up my phone(though I will only apply it after I buy my 16GB SDcard soon).
Here's where I stand:
1-> I rooted my device with some root I found over youtube, worked fine, then google play said me to update the superuser app, so I did. I guess it's updated, no problems there.
2-> Now I need CWM(I got a file named "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace-fix.zip", should I use that one or try to find the v4 one?
3-> Then I need to run on Home Button+Power to install that mod, but here comes 4 questions:
"You need to extend the internal app storage to the sd card. The FIRST thing you need to do is go back to Clockworkmod recovery mode and partition your sdcard so that it has a ext4 extension. Then update from ketut.kumajaya's post with cf-rootdtapps2sd???.zip(forgot the full name). That defaults all downloaded apps to run from the sd card."
3.1-> Does CWM have the partition option already? And does it formats the SDcard?
3.2-> Can u direct me the EXACT file so I don't mess this up?
3.3-> This doesn't wipes any data from the phone right?
3.3.3-> And what about the apps alraedy installed and using the internal memory even though they are "in SD card, as phone shows", i need to reinstall them right?
Ty again for any hassle done! And I will thank you agani, just for wasting the time here with me
2. Ok flash that. Some roms are compatible with that but not on v4
3. No. Don't use CFRoot. It's for stock roms only.
3.1 Yes, you can partitition SD card on CWM.
And yes, it wipes everything in your SD
and after you have partitioned it, download Link2sd from the market, choose ext4 then link every app (except system apps of course)
I guess that answers all, just didn't get what u meant by that, do i use taht version 5 or the v4 of CWM? And what is a stock rom? I never changed nothing on my phone except the Rooting.

After you partition your sd card thorough cwm recovery, do a factory reset and then install cm7.2. Then you can use either s2e or link2sd or a2sd to free up your internal memory.
If you are asking for exact cm7.2 file, there are many of them. Try cm7.2 by vo1 first. Thread will be in development section created by Lovetz.
It seems your not really getting what I mean
First I wanted the CM7 mod, BUT after reading that thread you showed me, I saw its possible to free up internal memory WITHOUT the need of installing CM7, and installing that other file right?
I just wanted to know which is the right file so I don't mess up. I just want to have the option to save all to SDcard, and not to use Internal memory. That was the reason I wanted CM7. Understand now?
use minitool partition wizard to repartition your sdcard. create two partition, both as primary, first partition as fat32 and second partition as ext2/ext3/ext4

then flash this from clockworkmod recovery. before flashing do mount system and data manually

Can you tell me how is it partitioned?
First partition will be for photos etc, the 2nd will be for apps?
Can you pinpoint me the .apk file for CWM you use?
Also, what should I expect when doing the partition trought CMW? Its just an option saying to do the partition? I read taht is needed to mount/unmount things,I have NO IDEA on how to achieve that.
If u got access to pc, better do it on pc with minitool after making backup of your whole sdcard. Yes cwm can do it but who know when disaster strike u'll lose all your sdcard data. Better to be safe than sorry mate.

Well cwm 5 can be found by Googling ( cwm 5 for Samsung galaxy ace)
2. It's not how you think ..once you partition your SD card the partition is inaccessible to you ..example if on a 2 gb card if u create a partition of 512mb when u go to settings the phone will read your SD card as 1.5 gb
3. Cwm guides are readily available on you tube
4. As the other guys have said b4 u need to use apps like link2sd to be able to use the partition ..entirely for apps alone ...s2e is the best but works ONLY on cm7
5. During the partition process your SD card will be formatted !!!
Backup your Data first! !!!!
6. Anything else???
P.S. I can't provide links as I m on my phone and even on a PC I would have advised u to Google
So, in your example, on a 2GB card, the phone will read only 1,5GB, so what will be that 1,5GB for? And the 512MB what will they be for?
Thanks for the reply

1.5 gb will be for your media -photos videos files etc that 512 MB is accessible only through s2e,link2sd and other such apps( u see I know only these 2 ) this 512 MB can be used to store your apps ---I.e. move the dalvik cache to the SD card which in turn results in a lot of free internal space....
Once upon a time I had 120 apps on my phone and 50 MB was still remaining.
P.S. please don't ask what dalvik cache is ...Google it instead ..ull get better info

P.S. please don't ask what dalvik cache is ...Google it instead ..ull get better info

So u still loose internal space even after this patchs?
