Why apps2sd not working on HTC Hero - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hy everyone...
i have my Hero rooted, and I pushed Superuser.apk and everything is fine...
but, I can't make apps2sd working...
can anyone help me with this...
thanks a lot..

You'd probably have to be a bit more specific about what isn't working for people to be able to help you.
However, a common thing I've heard with apps2sd which might be your problem is the following: the phone actually has to store some of the application in the phone itself even if the majority of the application is on the SD card. Therefore it can appear like your application is on the phone even with apps2sd working properly. The way to check this would be to check how much space is available on the phone, download and install a large program from the market and then see if the decrease in space available on the phone is the same as the size of the program you downloaded.

Well steve...
I formated my Hero last night, wiped it clean, and than i rooted it and pushed 'su' and 'Superuser.apk' and every thing is working. moved my cache into sd...
and i partitioned my 4GB SD card into 3 partitions:
1. 100MB Linux-swap
2. 512MB ext2
3. the rest into Fat32
I rebooted my Hero, it did recognize my SD.
but still apps2sd does not work...
1st edition of the application gives me that my SD isn't formatted properly and the second edition comes to the reboot button and doesn't reboot...
NOT WORKING
i can reformat my second partition (ext2) to ext3 or ext4 but don't know will it help...
Should I update my Firmware..?!
Thanks for ur time...

I think rooting alone is not enough to get A2SD to work. You actually need the app A2SD in the /system/bin folder of your phone. Why don't you simply flash Modacos rom 2.6 which comes with automatic support for A2SD? For that, you would need Ext3 partition.

thanks salmanbodla
my problem is that I am on the move all the time...
don't have wireless connection in the car or train for my laptop all the time, and can't use the phone alone to do that,,,
I have only one day OFF and I am trying to do all that next week
if there any other tips to get apps2sd work with out flashing the rom it will be nice...

I can't think of a simpler way than the one I suggested. Seriously, it is very quick... all you need is to download the right stuff from these forum's (Hero Android Development) as well as the Android SDK so that you can use ADB (if required... that's actually optional). Can you not wait until your next day off ad try it then?

))
yes, I can wait...
thanks a lot

I just want to thank everyone who tried to help me...
I downloaded Modaco's 2.7 ROM and updated my phone... Now everything is working perfectly... all three partitions are working, the phone is fast, and has a lot of memory...
there are some new stuff on it... its good )
now I can travel with all my emails working perfect, and all apps and maps...
and no worries that my phone will tell there is a shortage in the memory...

That's 'cos it isn't an option - you have to repartition your card and then A2SD (built into MCR2.2) moves your apps when it detects the ext3 partition.
You need to partition your SD card using computer, the phone itself can only 'format' the card which is no good. As per http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/A2SD:
The SDcard will need two partitions, the first Fat / Fat32 & the second Ext2 For the Ext2 partition I wouldn't go higher than 1.5GB cuz you may run into some issues. I was staying around the 500MB / 750MB area & it was working nice. As all the guides I've read state not to exceed the 1.5GB Marker.

Although a lot of guides say to use Ext3, Ext2 works fine for me. Remember, only newly (re)installed apps will be put onto the SD card- the old ones stay on the phone's own memory.

Incorrect if using MCR2.x; preinstalled apps are also moved.
Only if moving from an earlier Modaco ROM, everyone else has to wipe first. If Fezy had not partitioned his card first then his apps would be installed to internal memory and I don't think that partitioning the card subsequently will cause those apps to be moved to it.
Hi thanks for all replies your assistant is much appreciated. As i'm new to android (coming from symbian) I was doing so much research i ended up getting confused with all the stuff i saw. But just the day before yesterday actually realised what you just said. I had decided to manually create a partition on computer and did it up to ext 3 etc but thought it didnt work because again i tried to use da apps2sd application to move the apps ( i know "what a noob") and hadn't realised that the applications had alrdy transferred (i only realsied later when i saw 93mb of free phonestorage space) so i ended up doing it all again and as u can gess i lost all my applications lolz, but i had a backup created beforehand so it worked ou .
Thanks again for the help shluggity and squiffsquiff really appreciate it guys.
p.s all the preinstalled apps got moved first time hence me losing all the apps when i tried it again.

low space with a2sd?

Hi,
I'm getting low on space message on my hero running VillainRom 6.1. Tried rebooting, still there. I've only tried to install one or 2 apps with the message there, so not sure if thats actually been affected.
settings-->sdcard & phone storage-->internal storage shows 14.83mb
quick system info shows:
sd card storage free 2.14gb
a2sd storage 249mb free (total 457mb)
system cache 129mb free
memory 37.35mb free
there doesn't seem to be any more processes running than usual - only around 3-4.
I do have quite a lot of apps, over 100, probably closer to 200, I havent counted.
btw thanks to everyone on this site, I'm new to flashing roms but having fun learning, and my phones definitely got a new lease of life.
use the apps2sd checker to make sure its working. If it is id say increase your partition from 512 to more
Just because the app is installed on the sd card (assuming its working properly) doesn't mean the davilk cache for the app has moved. unless you move this as well (which isn't really recommended) each time you install an app system memory will still go down a little.

after that restart the phone and check your memory is should be 120mb

a2sd check script says its working fine, also checked via adb shell.
This is what I then did to the partition size:
I copied SD card contents (both partitions) into ubuntu.
then I put SD back into phone and repartitioned using 1gb for ext2
then I copied back SD card contents from ubuntu.
I assumed this would work, but when I booted I was getting FC all the time. Bart backup sorted it out but I am still left wondering why this method of increasing partition size didnt work??
In any case quick system info shows a2sd has more space, but still got low space message.

seems to have solved the problem!! thanks alot mate.
would you by any chance out of interest know why copying ext2 contents from sdcard as outlined above didnt work? - may have some future relevance if changing/upgrading roms.

this is because the ramon recovery image had been linked with ext2 with a 512mb partition and u selected 1gb. im not quite sure about that.
chnagin rom is quite simple beucase you have to is
1.backup using nandroid
2.make sure you wipe everything. (also battery and rotating settings)
3. Re partition your sdcard to hold 1 ext2 partition and last partition should be the rest in fat32
4. Flash the rom you want through "zip file from sd card"
5. Reboot.
im a newb so i dont have much knowledge but patching up problems that i had, so that i can help others.
it can be pain especailly rooting!!!
So thats how you would flash a rom, but what if you wanted to keep your a2sd apps? So you dont have to install them all over again in the new rom when you wiped everything.
I think I read somewhere that it should be possible to leave the contents of ext2 as it is, and that should carry forward to the next rom, but I havent been able to test it myself yet.

help with a2sd please

Hi,
Recently rooted my hero after losing impatience waiting 6 months for htc to get their finger out.
Used cronosdroid and now using villianrom 10.2 final but will no doubt try out modaco in some point too.
Anyway, I would like to know if it is possible to save and run my apps from the sdcard?
I hear this will be possible using 2.2 but have heard that something called a2sd allows this functionality also?
If so, could anyone point me in the right direction to get a total noobs guide to installing and using a2sd and how I would then go about deleting the apps from the phone's internal memory and just running them from the sd card?
Many thanks for any help and advice you are able to share,
Cheers.
So you have already installed Amon Ra 1.6.2 yeah?
Check out BTDAG's guide in my signature,... The apps2sd bit is about half way down the 1st post, in grey writing.
I downloaded something called quick system info from the market and it says that a2sd is there giving me 457mb total and 423mb free.
I went through that long drawn out procedure (as a result of being on t-mobile uk) and used amon ra and created a gold card etc.
My Problem is, I dont know how to "use" this a2sd functionality.
I want to basically download from the market and save to the sdcard and run the apps from the sdcard and am unsure how to do this?
It doesn't do it automatically as I get to the usual memory low message after downloading 50-100 apps, so presumably the apps are still saving to the phones internal memory.
Basically, I want to know how to save and run from the sdcard and delete from the phones memory if thats possible as I think is the whole point of a2sd?

If you followed my guide correctly it will be working. You can check that with the other script in my guide. If you're still running out of memory it is because the dalvik is still stored on the SD card.
Ok,.. So you need to be using a custom ROM with apps2sd enabled. Then once that is on your phone, you just need to partition the SD (like it says in the guide)... thats it!

How do I move the dalvik to the phones internal memory?
I presume I followed the guide correctly as i've come from t-mobile touch g2 on 1.5 and am now using 2.1 villain rom and cronos rom before that but am still running out of memory, even with partitioning my sd card.
presumably then its the dalvik located on the sd card?

App2Sd LG Optimus GT 540

Can someone provide me a tutorial about how to install app2sd on rooted Lg Optimus GT540.
Thanks a lot & Regards

yes me too
plz help me
how to install app2SD on LG GT540 (android 1.6)
If you update to 2.1 then it's meant to work. There's a guide on Modaco on how to do it.
I am only passing on information that I have searched (mainly through Modaco) for and tried and tested. This is by no means my creation or discovery! And also...dont sue me if you mess your phone up!
First of all, you must be rooted!
Best thing to do before installing apps2sd is to do a factory data reset.
There has been discussions on whether apps2sd overwrites the phones factory defaults. I think the problem lays in an old script of apps2sd, perhaps there is a new on out... I couldnt tell ya! Anyhow, this is not really a problem if you want apps2sd permanently on your phone though. So remember, start from scratch, reset your data.
1. Partition your sdcard and make 3 partition on it.
Example: sdcard is 1 GB
1st partition in FAT32 600mb
2nd partition in ext2 300mb
3th partition as swap 100mb
Im not sure if the swap partition is needed but I made it anyway.
2. Copy the apps2sd folder to the root of the sdcard.
Example: /sdcard/app2sd/
3. Connect your phone from ADB and type this command :
adb shell
su (approve with superuser aplication in your phone)
sh /sdcard/app2sd/app2sd.sh
After a while your phone will reboot.
4. Now check how much internal memory you have (I had 135mb after my clean install of apps2sd. I have never had that much after a factory reset, a hard reset or a flash).
And there you have it folks!
tutorial : how to insert app2sd in optimus
first, im sorry for my english
for app2sd on optimus, you must have root level.
before install app2sd, please check you internal memory (setting-sd card & phone storage)
and remember your free space. biggrin.gif
step:
1.Partition your sdcard (i use paragon manager)
make 3 partition on your sd card.
example : your sdcard is 4 GB
1st partition in FAT32 3 GB
2nd partition in ext2 700mb
3th partition swap 300 mb
2.download this file mediafire[dot]com/?2os3np35b0fmc60
3.extract the download file
Added automatic installation app2sd. Just run APP2SD.bat
Unnecessary SDK TOOLS
what happen in your memory?
good luck

swap like a virtual memory may be.
i think phone need a virtual memory for app2sd.
Swap is like a linux swap (as in swap space for the RAM), but from what I read, it's not actually needed
Ah I see! Well thanks for that info. Its a bit too late now lol but atleast I know for next time. Thanks

Hey, I have an unlocked LG Optimus, if I set it to factory default will that lock it again? Or can I do this without setting my phone to factory default?
Old post but for reference's sake, am posting this here.
I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition for making the partition.
I had a 16GB microSDHC but I made only a 512mB ext2 and left the rest as FAT32.
GT540 was designed to handle only 140mB of usable internal memory. So, making a huge ext2 partition will considerably slow down your phone. I would recommend to keep it below 512mB. Most often, you won't install more than 200-300mB worth of apps. Most games have their extra data downloaded to the SD and only apk and dex files reside in the phone.
And, I found that Link2SD was better than apps2sd. I never used apps2sd because by the time I wanted apps2sd, Link2SD was out. Check it out.

@nibras_reeza
i am having 8 GB memory card. can you please tell me the steps how to do partion..
why dont you just put 2.2 or 2.3 on your phone. the roms are available in the developer forum.
I found installing cm7 made it work. Although i lost the functionality of my camera app2sd worked other than that it is a great rom.
I agree, link2sd is far more better than apps2sd.
Also u need to upgrade ur firmware from 1.6 and 2.1 to higher roms, 2.3 is good.
So to fully use ur android, root your device, install a rom manager, then clockworkmod and superuser, there you can enjoy.

Link2SD in Gingerbread

Has anyone got this working? I used to have Link2SD in 2.1 but now the ext partition is the only partition recognized by GB and not my main partition. I can access my main partition from USB connect, but not from within the phone. Anyone has the same issue?
You can natively move apps to the SD on GB in Options>Applications>Manage applications. Choose an app that supports it and the option to move to sd will be there. No partition needed.
Thx, i will just fix up my SD card into a single partition again then
Does this also mean that I don't need the app Apps2SD anymore?
With App2SD you can quickly indicate which apps can be moved to SD. So I still have it there. Furthermore, App2SD also quickly clean your cache.
Link2SD gave the option of moving ANY app to the ext2 partition. The native gingerbread app2sd doesn't support moving all apps to the SD card.
Any way of making link2sd work on GB 2.3.3?
can anyone confirm what's the current sdcard partition layout. also which partition is detected in phone.
i think i have an idea which might help up getting this to work.

@Anant: My SD is setup as per the guidelines described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10711328&postcount=1
I have a 8GB card and I have allocated 7.05 GB of FAT32 memory to the Data partition, and have allocated 0.5GB to the secondary partition. This partition was also setup as FAT32 since i had issues with EXT2.
*Edit: After the 2.3.3 update, the X10 now detects only the 2nd partition (480MB) instead of the data partition (7GB) - but when I plug into a PC, the data partition gets mounted correctly.
Hope that helped.
That is not good, it means that you cannot transfer data or programs between your PC and the 7GB partition... is there a way to fix this?
When you plug into pc, your data-partition mounts correctly, so you can copy your data to your pc as a backup.
I recommend using a adapter to connect the sd-card to your pc, formatting both partitions, and then put it back. I did it that way, be it that I removed my second partition and went back to one partition only, 8 Gb, and all works fine now.
I don't intend to use Link2SD anymore, because in 2.3.3 the system can apply data2sd itself, I learned, with or without Apps2SD.
Good luck, greetz,
kwarkje
From my observation, the 2.3.3 android system moves the appdata to the sdcard only in certain large apps (apps >7mb in size?) which is good if you have are dealing with huge apks like AngryBirds, but not too handy if you have a huge number of small apps all ~3MB in size.
BTW the native app2sd isn't compatible with all apps.
Use "Move2SD Enabler" from Market to allow moving any app to SD.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.leinardi.setinstalllocation&hl=en
This didnt work with my 32GB SD card... it is now a single 32GB FAT32 partition. What type of format should I use? FAT? EXT2?

Thats what I was looking for! Good find!
This app has its own hitch though: the move2sd enabler needs lots of caution...some apps aren't supported, and moving them to the SD causes them to crash. There is no way of knowing which apps can be moved and which ones can't. I happened to move GT Racing HD to the SD and it stopped working. Had to reinstall!

@Anatshri Any luck on this? I would prefer to use link2sd instead of the native move2sd in GB.
I tried a 16gb & a 4gb sd card but couldn't get it to work. I've also tried ext2, ext3 & ext4 as the 2nd partition but I don't think the stock kernel supports any of them. The sd becomes unreadable after a reboot but if I connect directly to the pc I can see both partitions.
If I make both fat32 partitions only the 2nd partition gets mounted. Do you think this is kernel related as well or can we modify the mounting scripts to correct this?
I am suffering from bad health conditions right now so can't work much however all I can see right now is if this is the case you can do two things
1) create a script that mounts partition 1 at /data/sd-ext coz link2 sd needs mounted partition at this location. I suppose init.d script could help us. However
2) the problem would be that recovery will detect only partiton one

I'm sorry to hear about your health, hopefully it's nothing serious and you get well soon. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give this a try when I get a chance.
Any solution on this?
I move from 2.2 to 2.3.4 and link2sd don't work anymore cannot mount the 2nd fat32 partition.
App2SD sucks because doesnt allow some apps to get moved.
Thanks
