Right - I've rooted my Hero ( RA-Recover ), and have flashed Modaco 2.2 Rom. I've moved my apps onto my 2 gig d cad with AppstoSD.
Now I want to replace my sd card with a larger capacity one - 8gig.
So how do I get all my apps from the old card onto the new one??
Is it a case of copying all the apps back to the phone from the old card ( Sort of AppstSD in reverse )? If so, how do you do that?

Mount the card on the desktop of your Mac/PC via the USB cable.
Copy the whole contents of your existing card to a folder on your Mac/PC.
Replace the card and copy back everything.
The folder structure should remain the same and as long as your new card is named the same as the old one, all should work.
If not, then at least you can just swap the cards back and you have your original setup.
Then try something else

It's this partition's files I want to either move to the new card, or copy back to the phone ( so I can then transfer them using Apps2SD to my new card. )

I would have assumed that all partitions would be visible when the card is mounted on the Mac/PC desktop.
Will ASTRO or any other file browser not see the partition ? How did you partition it in the 1st place ??

Thats a really good question. You made me think about that..
Indeed that you cant copy the ext3 en linux-swap one to one to the new card. So i think a way couldt be:
Format youre new card in a fat32/ext3 and linux-swap like you did with the old sd-card. Do a nandroid-backup with the old sd-card in youre phone. Copy then all the content from the old sd-card [fat32 partition] to the new sd-card [via youre pc] Then insert the new sd-card in youre phone do the nadroid restore from the recovery. Maybe this is the solution. I really dont know. But if it dont work you always can put youre old-card back without any problem.

If you are already on 2.1, you can change to 2.2 without any problem. There is just a minor difference between them . Apps2sd just installs/moves youre apps on the sd-card so you have more space left on youre phone.

Good idea - but I just tried that and it didn't work - I have to re-install all te apps amually ( a right PITA ).
@J-Zeus probably a bit late to help you now but an Ubuntu live cd would enable you to partition a new card with these formats and copy the contents across from the old one.
you would have to reinstall them manually anyway, as the connection to the market is lost and updates etc. wont show.
@Soulehmoo: why would this be? The apps were previously installed to the card so the app install db either remains on the phone (normal), in which case nothing changes with the new card, or be on the card itself, in which case, it may be copied across to the new one.
im not sure, but i have swapped a card over and thats what happened.

It's not going to brick your phone. It will just screw your apps up (maybe temporarily. not sure) since /data/app is in the SD card.
I realized my sd-card is probably not class 4, but I've already flashed with megatron.. If I get a better, and faster card, how do I continue with this? Have to flash everything again? According to test: Writing Speed is 5,9MB/s and Reading 8,7MB/s.. So don't know?
Cards that can write with speeds of about 6MB/s is class 6. That's good enough I think.
Anyway, maybe you can move the data from one card to another, provided the paths are the same. Also, your PC needs to be able to browse ext partitions. If you're in Windows, there is a 3rd party driver available. Just google it You will use it to copy the data to the other card.

Which driver ? WHat 2 google ? SOrry, THis is my first android phone.
An ext2 driver is available if you're on Windows. This makes Windows read and write to ext partitions since it doesn't natively support that filesystem.
Just follow this when you're going to try out to copy the contents of one card to another.
Also, there's disk cloning, but I haven't tested that out myself

Hello all,
Is it possible to create 2 partitions on your sd card? One for WinMo and one for Android. To keep it all separated.
It doesn´t have to be partition it may also be a trick or something. For the root in android begins in /sdcard and in winmo /sdcard/winmo. As long the 2 different systems are separated.
But a lot of searching, read something about linux swap and ext2 partitions(but i believe it's for real roms not ports). And that winmo won't see any multi partition sd cards.

You can simply create a folder called andboot and put all the android stuff in that folder and keep "winmo-stuff" in the root of your sd

Yea they kinda need to.
You can try to do two FAT32 partitions, but I don't think Windows/WinMo will see/understand the second partition - even if it is FAT32.
So you'd be kinda SOL trying to boot Android if WinMo can't see the partition... It might work, if you kick haret off from one partition to boot on the other... but kinda odd.
The ext2 solution isn't really a complete solution as it also depends on a FAT32 partition - I assume Android would still create folders on it in other words.
Just use separate SD's, problem solved .

It worked.
I made 2 FAT32 partitions. Primary for Android and Logical for WinMo.
WinMo recognizes them both, in file explorer as Storage card(Android) and Storage Card2(WinMo).
When you install an app in WinMo you get 3 choices, internal, SDcard and SDcard2.
The only problem you got is that Windows(PC) don't recognize the WinMo partition(it will recognize in activesync mode). So you first have to put all you WinMo apps on the android partition. And copy them to the WinMo partition in WinMo.
AFAIK everything is working fine.
Android doesn't see the WinMo partition
You can also try it. (I'm not responsible if anything goes wrong)
- Did it with this tool.
- I put my sd card in my computer (don't know if it works when you do it through your phone).
- MAKE A BACK-UP CUZ EVERYTHING IS GONE AFTER THIS!
- Delete the whole partition.
- Make a new partition, first the Android one*. Adjust the settings what you like, but put the partition primary.
- Then the WinMo partition. Adjust the settings what you like, but put the partition Logical.
- Now you're done. Put all the files on the android partition.
- SD card back in your phone and reboot.
- Now you can move the WinMo files, on your android partition, to the WinMo partition.
*When you do the WinMo Partition first and the android second, android will not boot.

Tired of that small 5gb usb storage? Here is my hack to swap your external SD card with the USB storage!
This is usefull especially if you use GPS apps that download maps or games that download big data files! I got the idea and studied several hacks for the galaxy 1900 so partial credit goes to whoever made those hacks.
DISCLAIMER : I have only tested this on the 4.0 U.S version running 2.3.5 and am not responsible for a brick (although it seems impossible to brick your phone while messing with this file).
So basically start by going to /system/etc using root explorer or similar (yes, you need root). Once there backup the vold.fstab file to somewhere ON ROOT (I put it in /data/app/)! This is important so you can access it if you need to restore it (also make sure root explorer is installed on device memory, not SD card). Now take my modified vold.fstab and replace the original in /system/etc, then change the permissions to rw-r--r-- (long click the file, then select permissions) . If all goes right after you reboot your device, USB storage should now be your SD card and vise versa! Be aware any apps on your USB storage will now have to be transfered using a PC, move the .android_secure folder to your SD card. Hope it works!
EDIT: here is a modified version for the yp-g70, all credit goes to rjsmith2007 for making and testing this!
Won't Maps pull data from the Ext SD anyway? All my music is on ext SD and players have no problem finding it; I would think maps would be the same. It's really like a 5gb and 16 gb (in my case) partition (isn't it?).
I'm looking for a reason to root, SD card/space is not one of them. My battery only charging to 90% is though, need to recalibrate (since it's never hit 100%)

I am referring to when you download maps with an app like sygic;
it saves it to the /sdcard/ directory instead of the /sdcard/external_ed/. Also gameloft games do the same and can use up your room pretty fast. I find this pretty useful myself, since I have a 32gb sd card, but just wanted to post it so if anyone does ever need it, it's here for them.

I just tried it with my Galaxy S Wifi 5.0. The mapping of the internal sd to the external_sd folder fails, but it works for mapping my external sd to the sdcard folder.
Edit: I took a look at the original and made a modification to yours to work with the YP-G70 model (the 5 inch one). Just copy the file from within the zip folder to your /system/etc folder.

There's still a bit of confusion with respect to terminology, I think (including myself).
I *think* that when the SGP5 displays "internal sd card", it's only part of the "internal 8GB memory". That "internal 8GB memory" is probably, I guess, something like an SDCARD or flash memory module that's soldered to the mainboard, and with Android, I think that it's split into a couple of areas.
Here's my "guess" of how things are arranged, using the terminology from Settings==>SD card and device storage:
"System storage": Part of the 8gb internal memory, e.g., includes /system, etc.
[1.65GB, in my SGP5]
"USB Storage" = "internal sd card" = /sdcard: The rest of the 8gb internal memory.
[5.01GB, in my SGP5]
"SD Card": The external microSD card, if you have one plugged in. Appears at /sdcard/external_sd.
[29.81GB, in my SGP5, where I have a 32GB microSD card plugged in.]
That System storage + USB Storage totals 1.65+5.01 GB, or 6.66GB. I guess the remainder of the 8GB is for bootloader, etc.?

Looks about right. Task Manger has them labeled like you list them, except there is a "Personal data" partition. It's 133mb on my 5.0. Maybe email and contacts?
I'm guess apps get installed on "System Storage", plenty of room there without having to move stuff to USB or Ext. I pretty much just use my ext card for media and pictures.
For some reason this caused issues with my Market connecting to the internet, any idea why? Anyone else experience issues with this modification?
Hmm, no no one has mentioned that problem, and I have been using this for months - no problem. Sorry if it did that, have you tried restoring the original? Also, an update to the instructions is to change the permissions to rw-r-r. I didn't notice anything wrong without changing the permissions, but you never know.

https://github.com/Entropy512/initramfs_yp-g70/blob/master/misc/recovery.fstab is the Player 5.0 partition table.
As you can see, nearly everything is on partitions of mmcblk0 - on the Player 5.0, this is eMMC (embedded MMC) storage. The total size of mmcblk0 is 8GB
The partitions here include (but are not limited to):
p10 - EFS - this contains device-specific config data, on phones that includes IMEI, on our device it's probably Bluetooth and WiFi MAC addresses
p11 - Kernel
p12 - Recovery (on some devices, recovery is a separate kernel partition - Samsungs have this partition set aside even though most of their devices don't actually use it. You can put anything you want on p12 and it won't do anything usually. For us, recovery is part of the kernel initramfs on p11)
p13 - /system - This is where the system firmware, often called the "ROM" sits. A number of people are trying to fight the "ROM" terminology, since it's not really true - flash isn't read-only, thus it isn't the "ROM" any more
p14 - In the linked file it's /datadata, but the device actually mounts it as /dbdata - various SQL databases for apps live here
p15 - /cache - a cache partition separate from data. Files stored here are intended to be safely wipable/deletable
p16 - /data - Various user data. Your apps live here unless you've moved them to SD. Most system settings are here too. ICS merges this partition with the internal SD so they are one and the same
p17 - /emmc in recovery and, if someone ever has the time to port it, CM7, /sdcard in Samsung factory firmwares. This is the "internal SD card".
There are a few other partitions that are not touched by recovery that exist, such as the LFS partition and the bootloader partitions. These are all small.
mmcblk1 is the external SD. Usually only one partition, which is /sdcard in recovery/CM7 and /sdcard/external_sd in Samsung factory firmwares
On the 4.0, I believe it uses Samsung's older NAND flash technology and not eMMC, so the partitions on internal storage appear as stlN/bmlN
i think i did something disaster...
i am using Samsung Galaxy W. I did follow your above instruction. The problem is after restarting my phone, I go to setting>storage and it shows total space and available space for SD card and USB storage is UNAVAILABLE. What is available is only Device Memorry which is 1.03GB.
Thinking that your vold.fstab is not compatible with my Samsung Galaxy W, I replace it with the original vold.fstab that I backed up earlier. However this does not solve the problem.
Then what I did is I tried to reset the phone to its original factory setting (Setting>Privacy>Factory Data Reset..),. Unfortunately the same problem still persist. And i think this is silly and catastrophic step since i loss my original vold.fstab which is stored in the internal memory.
Any of you can help me?

Well, did you change the permissions on your backup back to rw-r--r--? And yes, this mod should only be used for the device intended for. Are you sure that you replaced the modified vold.fstab with the original one? Did it give you an warning about overriding (it should have)? Are you sure you used your backup and not accidentally mine? What program did you use to copy?
Hmm stupid question, but how do you replace the existing file? I am using root explorer an it says it is read-only when I try to paste it in there.
Edit... Never mind... I didn't have it mounted correctly.
I have tried this multiple times, but every time I reboot it says "USB storage damaged, may need reformatting." So I press reformat, and it's done in like 1 sec and the problem still persists.
Any ideas?
Hmm, odd. I know you have the same version player as me, are you running 2.3.5 or 2.3.6, maybe that could affect it? Did you try before you did a lot of modifications to your device? What type of SD card you got, I use a 32gb class sandisk. I don't think that would matter, but you never know. I recall getting that error when I was working on the mod, but I got it fixed before I released it. Weird.
Oh yeah, what do you have your sd card formatted as? I use FAT32, not sure if that could affect it. May want to try reformatting the card on a PC, then try.
I have a 8gb kingston micro sd card, and I'm running 2.3.5. I had this problem a long time ago too when I was still on stock. Maybe it's my sd card. I will reformat it and try again, and if it doesn't work I will try a different sd card.
so the deal here is that i wanted to put a 16gb sd from 8gb that i was using. i had the old sd card (8gb) in my phone, i copied the whole thing on my computer's hard drive. put the new one in my phone, then formatted, then copied back everything from the computer.
Now, i only see 129 apps on the phone out of 285 i used to have. most of the apps i used to have were moved to sd using apps2sd.
i tried searching but i found results regarding how to backup before using new sd, or how to format etc. if i got blind for some reason and have missed the thread can someone please direct me to the right thread? or else can someone please help me that how can i get those apps back?

According to me , you have the hidden files and folder disabled on your PC. So enable it, the from your old sdcard(8gb) copy a folder named ".android_secure" and put it in 16GB, then check again if that worked.

If you do that you may be subjected to random freezes,lockups,etc. Not saying this for a 100% but usually that's the case. When you install apps and run them certain apps place folders on your sd card that are linked to the app. Also if you move apps to your sd VIA program/mod they are stored in the android_secure folder located on your sd card. When you format,move,alter,etc the folder from the sd or alter the contents inside of the .android_secure folder you remove/break the links, and just dropping the folder back on the SD will work but in most cases it dosent restore the links correctly from my understanding. IMO your best bet is to just uninstall the apps you had moved to your sd and then reinstall them. Also for future reference don't move or alter the
.android_secure folder folder if you have a nandroid that has some of the apps you installed moved to the sd. This is just my understanding. Hope this helps

WTF is going on here.

Have you tried doing all your copying on a PC? I mean, taking your 8GB to a PC... copying files to a temp folder. Putting the 32GB card into the PC and copying all your files to the new card. I have always done this and I had no issues with folders not copying properly.

i copied files in usb mode from the galaxy to my computer and then swapped the sd cards , then tried to copy stuff back. but it just aint working , windows shows everything copys over except the .android_secure dir that is. my device will not recieve the files. and some other stuff in just plain dir's are not found when using root explorer. WTF is going on here.
Can anybody please help.

Like the pserson above me said, have you tried on the PC? Also when you do copy it over on PC make sure that you have all administrative rights on your computer so it can go through.
I know this is a tad old, but A nandroid backup such as done by 4EXT Recovery or even ClockworkMod should backup the .android_secure folder/partition/etc (in 4EXT Recovery when you do a backup, it saves the boot, system, data, cache, sd-ext/sd-ext2 into a backup which can be then be copied over to a new card after you partition it how you want, then run the restore process).
Likewise you could probably tarball it via adb shell in order to transfer it across file systems that do not support linux permissions and ownership flags.
