hi, i recently asked about disabling GPRS which i have now done through my network provider.problem is, it's still possible to access the web via GSM. does anyone know how I can permanently disable any access to the web - even if the phone is reset? O2 say they can't Block access to the GSM number. I have to do this - or get rid of my phone.
maybe if there were a program which would block any atempt to modem using gsm you could put it in the extented rom
but really it's a bit like trying to make sure nobody call a surden nr from a phone but having to do so in your end and not in the operator end
it's only possible if some hack program can block all attempts to connect using anything but usb

Thanks for that. Pardon my ignorance - but what is my extended Rom? How do I but thing in there? Is such a program available?
On my settings, I notice that the GSM number has a password associated with it. Does anyone know if I can apply to change my password. That way - if the phone is hard-reset, it will try to set up a connection with the default password - which woyuld then be invalid. That way, I could ensure that only I have internet access and only when I manually input the password.

Hate to even mention this but as a last resort you could damage the SIM card port or have siemens disconnect the connector to GSM or SIM if possible, that would take out the phone option.
Ah, but wouldn't that disable the phone completely? i still need the phone to make ordinary calls...

But I bought the XDA principally for its connectivity to MS Office, and for the fact its a phone. I couldn't give two hoots about using the internett. it costs too much anyway, and others have access to the phone and know how to reset, use the net, then reset again - and restore the info. Thus making it look like it hasn't been used. (though I can check the call register etc).
So you see I need to do this - to protect my wallet & my kids...
As a very last resort - I'll sell the XDA. buy a seperate PDA with no mobile connectivity, then buy a standard mobile instead.

Sorry Damian Gardiner, did'nt quite understand before that you still needed the phone functionality. Just a quick question, for you to connect to an ISP is that not a data call (whether by GSM or CDMA or Normal phone line) and if so I thought it was possible for your provider to disable data calls?????? Don't really what I am talking about, just thinking out loud.
The way that I disable mine is in the [My Connections] settings where it asks to "Select a modem", I pick the "Hayes Compatible Modem" which does not exist in the XDA. So the device cannot dial out my ISP number. When I actually want to connect to my ISP, I pick "Cellular Line". Actually, if you pick "Cellular Line" it just counts as voice minutes. This can be very useful especially during weekends. It is quite slow though. If you pick GPRS then it counts as data, which is additional service.

If your provider disables both GPRS and CSD, you can't make any data calls at all. CSD is what provides the ability to dial a provider.
Wouldnt it just work when you delete ALL connections on the XDA?
That way the device won't be able to connect straight away and thus alwys comes up for some user interaction. . .
When I am on my own network I use CSD (ie. dial-up) because it counts as voice minutes (and I don't ever use all the minutes of my bundle)
When I am abroad I use GPRS (cheaper than Roaming CSD)

Have tried searching xda-developers, google, and apps to no avail.
My SGS2 thinks I am roaming when I am not, so certain Apps will not work as they were intended.
Is there anyway and or app that would override the phone/sim to think I am not roaming.

There is a option in settings-wireless and network-mobile network... Data roaming, untick that, i do not know if it does anything for you, and maybe choose automatic network selection, according to sim... other than that, i wouldn't know... It is strange if its roaming all the time in a home network...
When un-checking Data Roaming the phone will no longer connect to Data services as it thinks it is Roaming.
If selecting the network or leaving it to automatic it makes no difference.
I had this same issue before with other phones and was hoping with Apps or Root Access I would be able to finally force the phone to think it was not Roaming.
Did you by any chance use same sim card on all of your phones ? if yes, contact you service provider, because no phone should think its roaming all the time. I doubt it its up to the phone, as apps go, i've haven't heard of any, but if i find anything i'll post it..
Yes I have used the same Sim. It is not one of the main local providers in Spain (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange) but rather Simyo which is owned by KPN (major Dutch company). Simyo only sells sim cards on the Internet and are extremely cheap.
I have checked with the service provider and it is something they force, in that Data connection will only work when phone is set to Roaming. Internet, and Skype works but Rebtel will not activate as it thinks I am roaming.
I have this same issue.
Just upgraded my SGSII (GT I9100M) from the stock Bell firmware to Android 2.3.6 XXKL1 Firmware. After the upgrade it thinks it's roaming when it isn't.
I am using the Lumia 800 on Talkmobile (UK). I have a problem whereby the ability to use the data connection fails intermittently. There is no signal drop - it still has a data connection - I just cannot use the internet, and stop receiving emails etc... Restarting the phone or turning Flight mode on/off will bring back data. I have noticed that it happens when the data connection moves from H/3G to E/G and then back. I am not sure yet if this is the only time it happens. Sometimes I only notice when I haven't received an email for a while... and then realise that the internet isn't working despite an apparent data signal...

I had that problem with firmware 11500. It happened about 1 time every day or every other day for a while. Then I fiddled with cellular options (switching data on/off did not help, needed reboot) and ran network setup again and it went away till I updated to 12070 and it has never happened again on this new firmware so far.
I had this problem and found out that it was because I had manually put my APN settings.
Later when Nokia released their Networp Setup app in the marketplace, I had to delete my APN settings>reboot>then install this app and let it do its work of finding my provider and automatically configuring APN.
I have not had problem from then.

I had that problem WITHOUT an added APN. So I re-added APN among with running Network Setup a second time and then the issue didn't come back for me. I have manual APN added now as well as the Network Setup app and on this new 12070 firmware my data connection has not dropped a single time yet in soon a week.

I've had the same exact issue as you, in fact some from the offical Nokia discussion have also asked about this.
If you have a UK phone, and if you're using it else where, like say the US, I think the missing 850 band is causing this. If not, I think it's probably just due to poor signal in your area as well.
I noticed that this Nokia phone unlike all my others, has issues trying to jump from the different frequencies. Like Edge to 3g to HSPDA.
I noticed that if I switched to edge in the settings, I can maintain the data signal much better and much more consistent, sometimes you have to turn data on and off to get it to work though.
I'm using mine in NYC so you can only imagine what kind of service I get with AT&T, but the edge method works.
Also instead of constantly turning your phone on and off (bad for battery life) You can simply just go into settings for network and turn data on and off and this will fix the issue as well.

I was never able to get internet working through the Network settings app. it had my network there, but the internet didn't work after selecting it. The only way that I have managed to get internet to work is by editing the APN within the Diagnostics app. editing the APN within regular Settings doesn't work for me either...
I didn't have your exact problem, but some of the stock apps (maps, bing search, skydrive) were not working over a 3G connection (worked fine over wi-fi, and other apps worked fine over 3G). I think it has something to do with Nokia Network Setup thinking I'm on AT&T when I'm actually on Straight Talk (an MVNO that uses AT&T's network). What fixed it was removing the proxy entry in my APN settings.
Interesting - I am on Talk Mobile which uses Vodafone's network. I will try deleting the proxy.

Roaming Control
Are you tired of having the R icon in the notification bar instead of showing the connection speed? Do you have a mobile plan that allows you to use it in certain countries like you were at home? Do you want to enjoy roaming in certain countries/networks but don't want to allow roaming everywhere?
Then this app is for you.
This started as a personal project for something that I needed myself but decided to make it a proper app for everyone to enjoy.
What this app allows you to do is:
Allow national roaming on virtual networks (to get rid of the R icon when being home)
Force phone into roaming mode on domestic networks that aren't the home network.
Add on which specific networks you want to allow roaming
Add in which countries you want to allow roaming (this will allow roaming on all the networks in those countries)
Dual-SIM support with separate rules for both SIMs (Lollipop 5.1 and onwards).
What this app doesn't do is just remove the R icon and show the connection speed.
If you add your current network or country when being abroad, you are roaming and it is your responsibility to keep your phonebill in check.
INFORMATION FOR USERS ON ANDROID PIE
I have tested this app with Magisk 18.1 and with the EdXposed Magisk module and confirmed it working at least on a OnePlus 6T. You may have to toggle the roaming system setting on and off (or leave it on) to get a data connection after a reboot.

Shouldn't need to restart SystemUI, it should dissappear on its own after a while or if you can't wait, just toggle airplane mode on and off.

For now the source code is just on my computer, haven't yet looked into releasing it.
You mean that there are circumstances where the phone is roaming, but the R isn't showing up and the phone thinks it's on the home network when it in fact is on a foreign network (also not blocking the data connection as it should because of this)? If that's the question, then no, that doesn't currently work. It is however easily implemented.
Basicly what the app does now is to make the phone think it's not roaming when in fact it is (hence why it should be used carefully not to add the wrong networks/countries), but it can as easily be made to work in the other direction, to make the phone think it's roaming even though it is on the home network.
This is fantastic. I will test it on my Nexus 6P on T-Mobile when I am roaming again in Canada.
One related thing I have been hoping to see in an Xposed module that forces the data connection type display to stay on when the WiFi is connected as well. I hate that I cannot tell whether my phone is on LTE, H+, H, or GSM when I have an active WiFi connection.

This should work on dual sim too but I don't have a dual sim phone to test with. I also suspect that the app might enable roaming for both sim cards which probably isn't what most people want.

Hi. My service provider doesn't cover all places in my state,so I have to connect to another service provider in my state where my home network is not available. Basically,I want to switch from my home network to the other network automatically,when my home network is not available. Can this app do that?
And,it does show the Roaming Symbol when I connect to the other network. Please help.

This app won't make your phone automaticly connect to that network. All it can do is that when you connect to it, the roaming symbol won't show up and the phone will think that you're on your home network.
I can't test it on my Lenovo P70-A.

If you don't mind my asking, is it a question of deciding whether or not you want to release the code, or a question of *how* to release it? If the latter, github is ideal. Is github.com/CazeW yours?
If you don't know how to use git, it can have a steep learning curve, but once you are into it, it is an indispensable tool that will change your life. I'd be happy to help you learn it if you need.

That would be an *incredibly* powerful option, especially for users of wacky MVNO's.
One other feature I can think of right now, which kind of is but isn't *entirely* related, would be to ignore signature checks on carrier services. The reason I say that it is related, is because the carrier service controls several aspects of network connection. For example, if you look at GsmServiceStateTracker https://android.googlesource.com/pl...telephony/gsm/GsmServiceStateTracker.java#894 you can see that a big chunk of the roaming control is tied to the Carrier Config, https://source.android.com/devices/tech/config/carrier.html
Just breaking the signature check on the Carrier Config would allow a lot of aspects of the network connection to be managed by regular installable packages.
Alternatively, the ability to inject a custom signature into the data read from the UICC would accomplish the same goal.
But of course, like I said, this is not entirely related, since it does break off from *just* messing with the network directly.

Yes, that is my account. Didn't even remember I had one.
I know how to release it, but right now it's more of if I want to. I'll probably release it at some point but before I do, I need to clean up the code (it's not pretty) and I know nothing yet about licenses (don't even know if I need to think about them).

That is interesting and definetily worth a look at but for now it's a feature that would only work on Marshmallow. To get the most out of it, the hacking would also have to be done without the use of Xposed which unfortunately goes beyond my skills.

The way I see the national/domestic roaming option, is that it would be most useful on borderland areas that obtain coverage from one or more domestic networks and one or more international networks. If you know for a fact that you can roam sanely on domestic networks, but international networks will hit you where it hurts, then that would be an easy option to allow roaming on all networks with a matching MCC.
There are certain service providers here (Canada) where this would be useful, since they are not permitted any *actual* domestic roaming, and their local network has multiple MNC's from all of the past network acquisitions, yet they charge something like $5/minute for voice roaming in the USA. So a domestic roaming would allow them to connect to all of the different MNCs that belong to their service provider without risk of roaming on tmobile or att.

And the beauty of it, is that the non-xposed part of it would actually *not* be a hack. It would just be generating a carrier package declaring the proper intents and privileges, and extending the proper classes.

Your application works on the nexus 6p T-Mobile with purenexus ROM. My roaming was broken beforehand. Enabling it wouldnt get me data and the stupid r on the signal didn't let me know if it was even grabbing data connection nevertheless at what speed. Thanks a million.

There have been cases of some people I know (older family) that were brought an Android phone but inadvertently some Data was used without a Data Plan - more expensive.
Lets say instead of buying Feature Phones for some delivery boys, we bought Cheapest Android phones possible - The boss there just wants Phone calls with them and wants to ensure the boys wont be able to Rack up Data use/ bills on the phone -

I saw this suggested APN answer, but that means a user/ employee can change it as well. Any "Administrator" kind of way to "block the data" and "disable users ability to circumvent" around it? Some MDM or Software / Hack solutions besides the wrong APN hack that someone could possibly get around? Any way to prevent them getting around as an Admin?
You could have the carrier block it but to be honest it will cause more issues as the device was made to be connected so it will lag and things will be force closing all over the place.

Carrier company are devious people. They canned entire CDMA network with only a 7 day notice, forced millions of people to buy GSM phones and since there was no price diff between a Feature Phone & Android Phone we got cheapest Android on the market for the delivery boys.

1. Phone numbers of all their Sister companies - Insurance, Healthcare etc etc
2. Set up APNs and data etc on the phone
So I followed the following suggestions:
1. Enter wrong data into APN - Tested it
2. Disabled "Data Traffic" in Toggles
But, the issue is that these 2 can be fixed by someone if so inclined.
Is there any way to DISABLE a Users access to these things?
