Hi Everyone
So with flash cards I like fast. This card here seems to be the by far fastest microsdhc card - roughly 4 times faster then a class 6 card. I don't feel a difference between regular and class 6 cards, in fact the lexar card (unrated) I have seems faster than the transcend class 6 card.
So I bumped into Microdia's press release where they announce their card and claim its the fastest one period.
Then on Microdia's company website, they list the cards.. 4GB/24MB/sec. is the max - but if I can get 4 times the speed I'd be happy with 4 Gigs...
So Anyone ever tested one of those cards? Anyone have an idea where to get them.. it seems that they only sell in quantities of hundred, and I'd love someone to test those..with roms.. swap.. to see if it feels faster.
The card is the bottleneck and any possibility to speed things up by a factor of 4 would be awesome.. maybe it would even make hero bearable (sorry I am a speed freak.. so far nothing beats Dwang's rom I find).
So anyone have one of those, can get some of those, willing to do a group buy, write to them to have one tested.. anything... I WANT SPEEEEEEED the more the better.. and 24MB sounds a lot better than 6 MB...
That card costs $200. not worth it
http://www.hktdc.com/sourcing/produ..._XTRA_PRO_160X_micro_SD_Cards_24_0MB_Sec.html
I agree a card that at best can hold a few albums and my 512MB EXT4 partition is in no way worth $200. I don't care how fast it is. You also have to make sure there isn't a read cap on the G1 itself, not likely that it's under 24MB/s but it's possible.
That price was back in 2007... if you look at the press release date... probably half or a third that by now...

their website hasn't been updated in a while either... looks like they were working on some 60mb/s cards and above 3 years ago might be out by now somewhere in china? lol
but yeah it's like the Klipsch Custom 2 earbuds, $200 2 years ago, now selling for $70 at amazon might get one. they're good.
if you find any other info on the microdias (not too likely as they're in Hong Kong... like those elusive Andida batteries- only on eBay lol) PLEASE keep us posted.
I am definitely interested if the price is right.
I found this. Its a class 10 microsd card with 66x speed. Should help Hero out quite a bit.

As far as I can tell the "on device" read cap is around 9Mb/s, and the write cap is around 8Mb/s, and the "through USB" read and write caps are around 2 to 3 Mb/s. I did some extensive testing with cupcake. This may have changed in donut, but I doubt it. So the gist is... If your SD card can read and write above 10 Mbps, your card exceeds the capability of the G1.

oh ok. yeah i can confirm that USB read/write cap... so usually i just take my card out when i want to transfer roms and stuff... don't wanna waste 16-24mb/s right?
O.O the G1's r/w limit is pretty low... -.- or is it for a mobile device?

Well, those quotes were at stock CPU speeds as well.
Can someone check my math? I am drinking some scotch and I am not up to snuff right now...
# time dd if=/dev/zero of=/sdcard/test count=102400 bs=1024

So I would just take 100 / real time and get my MB/s right?
In this case is seems that I am getting 15.69MB/s read and 3.8MB/s write...
This seems off, what am I missing?

My SanDisk 8G microSDHC card would probably have been marketed as an 100x or possibly 133x if we were still using the old SD "standards." That link and product are both very old. Don't waste your time.

I never heard about those manufacturers before so I'm interested in the quality.
Micro SDHC Card.
Hi !
I have been testing a lot of different cards, and my recommendation is this
Transcend Micro SDHC 16 GB Class 6
And it has lifetime Warranty!
With kindly regards MacRoy
MacRoy, thanks for your post
I know tha Transcend and San disk are the leaders in this field but i'm interested in the above mentioned cards because they are the cheapest i could find on e-bay.
I would like to know if anyone has actually used them so they can tell me what is their quality?

Just purchased this one myself, waiting for it to be delivered. An 8 GB Class 6 Transcend card came with the purchase of my HD and it's been the best card I've owned so it was an easy choice for me. I wouldn't go cheap on something like this personally, you get what you pay for.
I bought the 16gb class 6 earlier today because my 16gb class 2 is starting to give me and my computer MAJOR problems. Up until now, the card has worked like a dream. I can't wait to see how much faster the class 6 will be like
i bought this card a few days ago

waiting it to come...
i'm hoping it's gonna be delivered in a 2 weeks period so i'll give my opinion then on the card speed
the card has arrived....
by putting it in my PC the higgest speed I got was 5,2 Mb per second
I would like to make some more test so if anyone can give me some tool for testing the actual speed of the card I will report back with the results...

hello,
I bought the "Transcend Micro SDHC 16 GB Class 6" and since I can't flash any ROM, I formatted the card several times (FAT32) but to no avail,
you see the same thing?
Also this card is not compatible if you want to switch on Android.

my card is not transcend but I didn't formatted it when i got it... i just made a restore to defaults and once again installed all of my programs on it.. did you try that?
maybe you should format it with NTFS instead of FAT32?
but i don't understand why you said that you can't flash any ROM? did you try doing that already?
Looks good. Did you try copying 16GB worth of data onto it ? Some of these cards could be fakes and have lower capacity than stated.

by now i have 13,1 GB of data on the card... still haven't filled it to the end
in the SD properties on the phone it says 15185.50 MB of storage availabe... i suppose that that is 16 GB...
I know youre all speed freaks - and youre talking about the class 6 cards...
But i just ordered this one (16GB, Class2, ~22$) (urgh - china product... - i never trust those *g* - but the price is just half of all i've seen before)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270528336681
as the 8GB delivered with the HD also just was Class 2 i thought thats enough for me...
And it's just a third of the price for the class 6 cards youre talking about.
Actual my question is - what do we need class 6 for?
Don't missunderstand me - I don't want to flame anyone for buying class 6 - but in my case about 7 of 8 GB are static on the card (means i transfered it once to the card and it never changes - Music) and 1 GB is dynamic (new Progs and new Music,...) but even this doesn't change every day all at once but about 20mb every day (max).
So with class 6 we save some time on the first copy progress - agree.
And every day about 10 seconds.
I know the example above is just for me but I think it would fit for most of u *g*
So why all people are so keen on this class 6 ? (i ofter read about in this forum not just in HD section)
btw. the tested speeds of those cards - most are tested in external readers are they? Does our HD even reach them in USB mode? or even worse - in ActiveSync mode? Cause i don't take my card out every day to copy some files...
greetings
Edit: k some people might watch videos on their HD every day which could take a while to sync - but USB and ActiveSync quests are still out...
forgot the video thing - cause i just once watched a video on my HD half -> battery life is not made for in my opinion

it all depends on what do you need it for...
for me class 6 saves me a lot of time because i download approximately 10-20 GB of music a month, and somwhere about 20 GB of movies and tv shows...
so basically i transfer somewhere around 1-4 GB a day from my PC to my card...
true, if you're doing that through the USB or ActiveSync you probably won't see the difference, but i often don't have the time to do that so I use the microSD adapter and transfer it a lot quicker to my sd card than it would be done through the USB or ActiveSync
on the end it all depends on what you're looking for and for what price...
Class 6
From what I see, don't bother with class 6 16G. I bought one. Testing the speed on sd card is great but once it put it on HD, it's no different than my Class 2 8G. Could have just purchase a Class 2 16G.

Hi,
I just got an email from ebay asking me not to finalize this order because of problem with the seller.
It seems that this is a scam.
Be careful.
Bemi
the question is not "what is the fastest class 4/6 card" in my eyes.
I bought the HD with the standart 8GB.....class "dont-know"...
of course I thought following:
higher class, bigger card = more expensive than slow and small...
so I tried to find out which card is included....
I found NO information about it. there is nothing to find on the HTC site.
no seriuos information to find on forums...
and nothing "written" on the card itselfe.
so I thought about buying the best and fastet card (testet with real test equipment).....
BUT
because the card-speed is degraded by the hardware you try to read/write....
and there is not a single information to find about what a HTC HD can handle....
(I asked the HTC support and did not get an answer at all)...
I decided to DONT buy another card at all....
I see no advantage to buy the fastes card it the cellphone is not able to use it.
SO : Is there anyone here, how can say that it is worth to buy a class6 card e.g. ??
if : where do you got the information a HD can handle the speed at all ?
thanks
alex

man that's crazy, although the 64's won't work with g1, I think its expandable capacity is only 32gb, but that's still big! Not sure of the class #'s on these bad boys, but I'm sure if there aren't any 6 or 10 class versions available yet it won't be long!
EDIT: nevermind, they're all 32's.....the 64gb has something to do with flash or whatever, IDK
32gb is the addressable limit of the SDHC standard.. when 64gb cards appear they will be SDXC, which means no current hardware can use them. Awesome.

Strange you should say that....

As I'm a newbie, I can't post external links.... but apparently CAN post links where "http" have been changed to "hxxp". I spotted this link earlier today, from Morgan Computers - a BIG hardware-clearance company in New Oxford Street, London. £51 for a 32Gig SDHC card.
" The 32GB SDHC memory card is German made, leading edge technology at its best! It also comes with a lifetime manufacturer warranty.
The 32GB SD Card offers high storage capacity with a write speed of 10MBytes/s and a read speed of 20MBytes/s. It is ideal for new generation digital camera and other applications with SDHC cards slots.
Compatible with All SDHC devices
32GB stores approx 1200 x 10MP Photos, 545 Hours of MP3
May be in Eco Friendly Bulk Packaging
*Please Note: SDHC cards will only work in devices that are compatible with the Higher SDHC Specification cards"
I'm going to invest in one of these for my (new!) Desire - my two G-1's will have to continue to make-do with 8 Gig Sandisk TF cards.

I have two 32GB SDHC's, one is class 2, the other class 6.
The class 2 works but it's insanely slow and it consumes a lot of battery due to the extra hot time required for reads and writes.
The class 6 is extremely fast and doesn't cause noticeable battery drain.
So am I correct in assuming that the higher the class number, the faster the performance & lower the power usage?

Meh. Until there's a PAE firmware released for the device. Like how a 32bit OS can only handle 4GB RAM until you enable PAE. (In windows, you can simply "turn it on", in linux you need a kernel with a PAE module enabled)
PAE, or Physical Address Extension, should allow for a 52 bit limit on physical memory but only supports a 48-bit virtual address space. 4 × 10245 bytes, or 4 Petabytes and 256 × 10244 bytes or 256 Terabytes, respectively. (What that means is, if the hardware doesn't support 52 bit addresses natively, then they highest capacity that can be reached via PAE is 256 Terabytes through virtualization.)
What does that mean for an android device? A PAE Kernel Module could be created to allow for addressing of more than 32 Gigabytes, how far past 32 Gigabytes? That I don't know. I would assume at least somewhere in the realm of 128-256 Gigabytes. I doubt there will ever be a MicroSD card at that capacity though. By the time we see affordable solid-state storage as small as MicroSD with a capacity over 64 Gigabytes it is unlikely that MicroSD will even still be around, and I doubt anyone will still be using the G1 anyway at that point. We're talking another 4 years or so, making the G1 an antique by technology standards.
tl;dr version: Once 64GB cards are affordable enough for it to be practical to put the time and effort into a firmware mod (kernel module, etc) for an android version of something resembling PAE, you can expect -someone- will figure out a way to enable 64GB usage in the G1.
I think we're gonna see faces like this: all the time, when it comes to electronics industry... I can still remember my first Intel 486 with a few MB HDD!
Man one of these would be nice!
For me 6gb is enough..
For music etc i have a mp3 player!
Here we are 2 years later, 256gb micro sd cards are just starting to appear on evilbay.
Also USB thumbdrives that can handle up to 512gb cards

Does it support Sandisk Ultra II, or SDHC and is that faster than class 6?
edit: is this okay?
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Ele...com-8GB-SDHC-Class-6-Memory-Card/Product.html
SDHC refers to an extension to the basic SD specification, allowing higher capacities. Hero supports SDHC upto at least 32GB, going on what I've read. I have an 8GB class 6 card.
Ultra xxx this & that is marketing bull with no standardised meaning in respect of performance. From what I can find via google, the Sandisk Ultra II is either class 2 or 4 (or possibly either depending on exactly which card you have).
The class system is a standardised classification of read/write speeds. Always check a card's class.
Is that card (Sandisk) ok? Depends what you want it for. If you intend to install apps to your card via, say, A2SD, I'd say no. Always get a class 6 for this, but it's a matter of personal choice. The standard doesn't imply this but collective empirical evidence also suggests higher class cards tend to be more reliable.
As to the linked card on play.com, it looks ok. Even the reviews seem reasonable, as long as you aren't inflicted with a broken lock tab a few earlier customers report.
TBH as long as you stick with 8GB class 6, as of the current date, you're at the sweet point for capacity-&-performance : price ratio. I bought one recently - think it was Transcend & about the same price.
OK, I think I'll buy that then. The only reason I want it is because at the moment videos always lag on my 2GB class 2 that came with it.
Thanks.
Micro SDHC
HTC Hero supports Micro SD HC and not the standard SD card. So check that before you buy. Im using Transcend 8GB Micro SDHC Class 6 Ultra. Works like breeze.. Also check 16 GB ones coz the price must hv come down.
Oh, so sorry - I didn't notice the card he linked to was not a Micro SD
Hell, that's the second time I've done that - I actually ordered the wrong size on one occasion. I hope this doesn't cost the OP. Even if ordered, they should take a return within 7 days, by law (in the UK, at any rate).
[Edit:] This is an ok deal.
As long as the micro as is class 4 or better then you should be ok with what ever you buy but give eBay a miss a lot of faked memory card and memory stick sizes comming from places like China and the like

Hahahaha. Thats too funny. Lets just hope he doesn't tear it open as soon as its delivered, no chance of a return then.
Anyway,... I found two good prices,...
Samsung 8GB Micro SD Memory Card - £13.49
Its only a class 4, but speeds in the comments are ok:
Speed (read) 15MB/sec
Speed (write) 6 ~ 7MB/sec
And doesn't this sound interesting,... "Features:- Waterproof - Innovative epoxy moulding compound tech helps over 24 hours in sea water- Shock proof - Survives high pressure, including the crush of a 1.6ton automobile- Magnet-proof - Resists over 13 times the magnetic force of home theater speakers- Elegant Package- Content Protection- Faster Performance"
The 2nd one is what CAULI had found, only slightly cheaper,...
Transcend 8 GB Class 6 microSDHC Flash Memory Card with adapter - £13.99
One customer states "I was getting write speeds of over 6MB I think the fastest was something like 6.70MB per second!"
BUT
Another says "Write speed with this card is the slowest of the lot, barely creeping above 5.3MB/sec"
Hmmmmm,....
Any more advice anyone?
I recently purchased the Samsung 8GB Micro SD class 6 Memory Card from play.com for use in my Hero and it works great with Apps2SD
Thanks for the tips everyone

It shows as being $32.99 + $1.99 shipping on their website. It's still a great price if it really is a class 10 card but thought I'd clarify the price.

Got this as well right around Christmas time... Didn't need it but couldn't resist the price. So far so good.
I too would love to know how to test read/write to see hoe it compares.

What about transferring a movie over to the SD card and looking at the megabytes per second speed???? Do the same test on the class 2 with the same movie and compare.
FYI: For people in Canada, Newegg.ca has the same card for sale...16GB Class 10
I bought one and am using it in my phone -- and it seems fast enough.
I've also partitioned it for swap -- the rest for MP3s -- but anyhow...

It's CA$28.99 + $9.99 S+H
Given the current exchange rate, Fry's is a better deal -- but at least it doesn't have to cross the border (ergo, no duty)
Okay, let me know if i'm way off base here, or just not taking formats into account, but when i received my photon (yay sprint premier) a few days ago, i noticed that it only said i had 8.47gb free of space, now i already know 3gb is dedicated for something in the phone, really don't remember, and i tossed my old evo 8gb sd in for more space, but why the misleading ad of 16gb internal storage!?!
there is 16gigs of internal storage, but the amount available is not given on the box. Yes this is misleading, but they did not lie.
2.8gig's for installing apps makes me not care that another 5gigs is being used for Webtop. So all in all 8+gigs for video/pics/extra app content is more then enough. And like you I threw in my old 8gig SD and have the same amount of storage as my old Vibrant now, but I have more space for apps. So I'm a happy camper with that and the rest of the phone
Yep, it's 16GB of total internal storage, partitioned among the system, Webtop, etc.
Disk /dev/block/mmcblk0: 15.9 GB, 15914762240 bytes
~500MB for /system
~3GB for /data
~650MB for /cache
~1.3GB for /osh (webtop)
~350MB for /preinstall
~9GB for /sdcard (internal storage)
And a lot of little partitions dividing up the space even further.

Not without repartitioning the internal structure of the phone, which is not possible at this time.

I presume once we get an unlocked bootloader/root, that will become possible?

Yes. Mind you, repartitioning the internals of your phone is NOT for the faint of heart.
Yeah not sure why you would want to gain that space back anyways. 16gb sd are pretty cheap.

Shoot 8gigs is even cheaper, not by much, and 16 gig's in a phone is really good, especially with unlimited data to stream music from the internet via your provider of choice.
I'm still unclear on the amount of space there is for apps without using an SD card. If someone could clear this up further please.
My phone reads as follows:
Application storage - 2.65gb available space (out of how much?)
Internal storage - 8.92gb total 8.61gb available (what is this space used for?)
Where is the remaining to get 16?
Exactly how much total space does this phone have, without an sd card, for installed apps?

How was that info found? Spare Parts?
That breakdown doesn't equal 16gb unless I'm missing something. Also, that breakdown says there is 9gb for internal storage but what about apps? Phone says there is only 2.65gb available. Need some clarification please.

I think its an 9 a least. Mine. You can get there by pressing menu, settings, storage about
Hookmeup From The Thrive
I got a 32gb on ebay for around that price. You can find the 16gb even cheaper.

Cheap is never good unless it is a good 'deal'. This is a great deal for a 32gb micro, class 10 which for me is very important. I think anything lower than a class 6 is a waste. You get more errors, file corruption and just failure when you get the cheap ones. Thats why now when you buy an evo/evo3d they are at least class 4's which when I bought mine they were class 2's. Guess they got enough complaints.
For me, Ebay is never a good choice unless you know it is what it says it is, and with electronics you never know until you actually get it.

Did you even click the link dude? Class 10's are all over the place. Being in IT for years means nothing. I have been in IT for years and that pertains to absolutely nothing about a micro sd card being available in class 10....lol
And go ahead and slap yourself in the face for paying that much for a class 2. I got some property I will sell you. Honestly it is cheap...
