Hi All,
I'm much more familiar with WM ROMs, but I'm dealing with my wife's HTC Hero and trying to make sense of the Android World. Her phone is running Orange UK stock firmware 1.5, build 2.73.61.5. My first instinct was to upgrade to the latest firmware available (2.1 I guess) but it sounds like these ROMs are still a bit experimental, which isn't going to go down well
Could someone with a good broad knowledge of the available ROMs please recommend the latest ROM which is going to be stable, feel complete and not result in complaints of 'it was better before'? The main aim is to run the version of Google Maps necessary for turn-by-turn navigation. I guess there are a few extra steps to get this working in the UK, but I heard this was possible.
Thanks!
It is possible, but you'll need 1.6 or above.
As 1.6 isn't available, you're looking at one of the experimental roms. The downside is, most of them don't work with Google Nav in the UK. The one that does seems to be Kagudroid, but it's an AOSP. No Sense UI at all... no facebook sync, no automatic backlight, no fancy time widgets. You get my drift?
I'd recommend either you wait until late feb (after HTC release official 2.1 rom), then there'll be a host of excellent ones up for grabs. In particular, from Modaco/Lox/Benhaam.
I imagined that there would be a few mature ROMs based on 1.6 because it's been out for so long. If there are, is there any reason not to install one of these then unlock Google Nav separately (like showthread.php?p=5122811#post5122811). [Sorry, not allowed to post links with my account!]

Hello all I have stuck pretty much with Kaos Froyo ROM but I was wondering if with the upgrades to the Incredible and other releases if someone has made a SENSE Froyo ROM for the Eris?
All Sense ROMs I find appear to be still based on 2.1.
Thanks
Been asked several times. A lot of us are still hoping for some hint of dev work going on.
Its highly unlikely because all the oem froyo sense devices have higher resolution screens. There are no froyo compatible medium resolution sense roms out there to port.
Once the HTC Legend gets the offical Froyo ( Sense ) it will be ported to our devices.
Kaos has on several occasions stated he is working on one, how its coming, well he'd have to tell you that

HTC's "target" delivery date for Android 2.2 with Sense UI for the Legend is "middle September."
This has been confirmed numerous times via e-mails people have written to HTC and received responses (as recent as last week). You can search various forums to confirm that.
So, we should see the Legend get an update very soon. It could be as soon as this week, but my pessimistic outlook when it comes to updates tells me it won't happen until October.
At least it's confirmed that the update is coming. All we can do now is wait and see.
There is at least one Incredible rom with Sense for Froyo. Could we use that?

Wrong resolution. It needs to be HVGA not WVGA.

Would it be hard to change?
Apparently. The HTC Legend is supposed to get a Sense Froyo update soon I believe and when that happens the devs can port it to the Eris.
is there a rom for the hero with the new version of htc sense (the one on the desire z)?
No... there isn't

Android pushes out updates once in a while. (2.1, 2.2, 2.3 etc). Whenever this is done, HTC has to build their own "layer" on top of stock android. This layer is called HTC Sense. (typical examples are the big "phone" button on your homescreen, the 1x1 power widgets, the "grid" you see when dragging an app icon over your homescreen, the lock-screen that has to be pulled down etc).
For the Hero they stopped making sense for 2.1+, so there will be no official HTC Roms for 2.2 and 2.3.
There are however custom ROMs, that implement 2.2 or 2.3 for Hero, and some even come with HTC Sense.
In this thread there is a list of custom Hero ROMs, sorted by Sense or no-Sense http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889299
As far as I can see, the only 2.1+ ROMs that have Sense are ChocolateFroyo, Sengle, Froyo Sense.
Have a good read at which one is stable or not, because I don't know which one is.
so, to answer your initial question about the new version of Sense: I don't think they will put out a version that has the newest version (although I don't know for sure) but at least there are some custom ROMs that give you a new Android version with Hero Sense.
Okay so this may be a useless post and it is my first one so don't beat me up too badly. I have been searching all over the place to find a Froyo build with HTC Sense. It seems as though development has been halted because apparently Sense is too large for the Rhodium CPU and the screen resolution is too high. How can this be true when the Rhodium runs Sense in Windows Mobile 6.5? I want to see a Froyo build that has HTC Sense and camera support. Can or has this been done? Would someone be willing to do it if enough people were willing to donate? I just want my Rhodium to work the way I know it can. I know there is a 2.1 build with Sense but there is no camera and there are many bugs with it and is not useful to me. Any help is greatly appreciated.
If anyone finds any Froyo with sense builds for phones that are NOT the HD or HD2, please post a link to them in this forum.
Thank you.
Sense on WinMo != Sense on Android
So don't confuse them. Why do you want sense? It's just a big piece of bloat, and most of the things you can find in other places (IE Fancy Widget).
Sense in Winmo is native code, Sense in Android is Java. Unfortunately, the gains in terms of development ease gained with Java are offset by the inefficiencies of Java on lower-end hardware.
Also, the problem with Sense is that it needs to be ripped from a Sense-enabled HTC native Android device, and in many cases, the binary has enough customization that it does Bad Things on our devices.
As I understand it, the only Sense-enabled build seen on our devices so far was 2.1, and had, as you mention, resolution issues.
Also keep in mind that the Windows Mobile stock UI was very dated, so Sense was a major upgrade for it. My experience with Sense-enabled Android devices is that it offers very little and just slows the device down. Actually, this seems true for all manufacturer-provided alternate interfaces (like the crappiness of MOTOBLUR...)

Just to back this up, I used one of Tiad's Froyo Sense builds for a bout 2 minutes. It it not worth it. Definitely, not worth it.

He claimed they were Froyo, I only looked at it literally for a minute and never noted what it actually was. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Eclaire.
Anyway, when I get this bloody repo sync command to go through without errors I will start making my own builds I guarantee, they will be better than Tiad, and I don't exactly plan on including any warez

Thank you. This makes some sense of it (no pun intended). I know there are other widgets that use less resources and look better than sense but I like the look and feel of it. I am probably going to be upgrading to an Evo 4g or Evo 3g so I'll have my sense soon anyway but I was able to get some use from the 2.1 sense build once I used a new kernel and used the "clean slate" scene setting. The only thing missing was the camera. I can get by with some sluggishness as I have been using Windows Mobile for a long time but I cannot get by without that camera support seen in the newer 2.2 builds. Also, the Hero has the same CPU speed as the Rhodium. I am not sure if this makes much difference but the phones are very similar in both screen size and processor speed. As well as the Evo Shift as far as screen. I am still new to all this though and those subtle similarities may really be nothing. I'll keep searching and post if I find anything.

Maybe you can test the panda homescreen with sense theme.

Hi,
Is there any way to install some of the Sense applications (Music, Video, Image player) on a HTC Touch Pro2 with the CBX0 Android ROM?. I have a Hero device with almost the same hardware and the Sense applications runs well and I´m use with these applications.

If you can find the APK's, maybe.
But Sense is a proprietary thing. So it's not 'open' - not easily ported/moved to other devices. All XDAndroid builds are AOSP - straight from Google. All open source.
Good luck. If you want, there's a 2.1 Eclair Sense build - but it hasn't been updated since 2010.

Thanks for reply,
Well many functions on my HTC phone have issues with old kernel versions, I don´t think I could use Eclair Sense if it´s not maintained/updated.
I´ll search first for the APK´s then...
Thank you

You could always try a new kernel on an old system...
But either way, that stuff is ancient.
Sorry I've been gone for a while, and my old thunderbolt is still running a Senseless version of Gingertheory (gingerbread) Rom, I would like to upgrade to a newer gingerbread rom now...what is the ASOP stuff? please enlighten me on which Rom I should run...I've got a replacement phone from Verizon, my text messages were all screwed up and not coming in properly. Anyways. I guess I should download clockwork mod on my new phone.
I don't need bloatware, just basics and a fast phone with good battery life.

The best GB Rom is whichever one you like.
for sense it would be a theory rom. for aosp either liquid or theory.
I am currently running gingeritis3D and i love it. I have not ran any other GB roms but i dont feel the need to. This rom is kicka$$ and so smooth. Got all the sense 3.0 goodies and the only bug that i know of an issue with voicemail which i fixed by just using google voice. I really highly recommend it
I was also told that the latest version (VIII) i based of the latest GB leak so its very stable
So what is ASOP? Can someone explain to me? Is it Senseless??

"Sense ROMs: Sense ROMs are built from RUUs, either officially released or leaked. An RUU is the complete update file for a handset; including the bootloader, radio, and ROM. Currently, all Gingerbread Sense ROMs are based on leaked RUUs. Each RUU has a version number, for example 2.10.605.0. The higher the number, the newer it is. Newer is generally better. Devs will usually include the base RUU version number in their OP. I like to think of custom ROMs developed on a common base as a family of sorts. They're going to generally have some similarities. They can have major differences as well. Some things about them won't ever change though.
Sense ROMs come in many flavors; 2.1, 2.1/3.0 hybrid, 3.0. It's really hard to tell what you like until you play with some and get to know them.
AOPS ROMs: AOSP ROMs are not built from leaked or released RUUs. They are built upon code obtained through the Android Open Source Project and are custom built for the devices. HTC, and manufactures in general, don't support AOSP being developed for their device. As a result, AOSP devs basically have to figure it out for themselves which makes the ROMs much more experimental. These ROMs typically come out in 1 or more versions, usually identified by date of release if it's a final release version, or an RC (release candidate) version if it's still in beta testing. Think of the version number and RC/beta number like the RUU number of a Sense ROM. For instance, CM7.0.3 may have several release versions that are only very slightly different. Then you may have several CM7.1.0 Beta or RC candidates that may less stable, but being offered for real world use and user feed back. That's basically the picture for the dInc currently, not the Tbolt, so don't quote me. CM releases are generally going to all look and feel the same and carry the same group of features. OMFGB is going to be making a name for itself with different features and characteristics. You won't know which you like until you try them."

I have tried most sense based ROMs, I keep going back to Gingeritis 3D. BAMF is a close second, all other ROMs I have tried I get FC issues, and other wierd **** where I will just flash back to 3D. Keep in mind, each phone is different, so results will vary. Try them all out, nandroid is your friend!
