US TMobile 3G on Hero? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I am looking into getting a Hero. I was wondering what version of the Hero would work with the US 3G network on TMobile or AT&T. I have both services but would prefer to use this on TMobile. And how hard is it to get the phone working on the US carriers?

No 3G on both networks; EDGE only. Take a SIM, put it into the phone, voila.
Edit: I apologize for my bluntness. It's just this question has been asked ten thousand times too many :[

Not quite correct!
The Telus Hero (available in Canada) uses the correct bands for AT&T. You are still SOL on T-Mobile US though!

US Hero Would It Work In The UK??

hi there im doing my rounds In LA soon and would love to buy a hero out there my main concern is, when i return to the UK will it work with one of my UK networks... any one have any insight into this.....
If it is unlocked , answer is tes.
My hero was on Orange UK ,and using with 3 network and will most certainly work with networks in US.
The answer is no!
The Sprint Hero is a CDMA device. It doesn't have a SIM card slot, because CDMA devices don't use SIM cards, so you can't give it another "identity" by inserting a different SIM like you can a GSM phone.
I believe that there are some phones that support both CDMA and GSM, and these can operate on both types of network because they have a radio that supports both and a SIM card slot.
Note that some CDMA networks have implemented what they call a UIM, which does the same job as a SIM card, but isn't compatible.
Regards.

In the US, it will work on T-Mobile and AT&T (GSM networks) but not Sprint and Verizon (CDMA networks). Note that you will also not get 3G from the GSM networks, because the Euro Hero doesn't support the 3G bands needed by either AT&T and T-Mobile, so EDGE is the best you will see.

this doesent answer my question it does the opposite.....
im trying to find out.. if a US hero that i buy in the US will work on any uk network....??
My previous post answered your question! The second post was commenting on what Lord Lucan had said.
Regards,
Dave
so dave in the us cant i just buy a sim free non network hero... ?
The "worldwide" GSM Hero does not support any of the 3G bands employed by networks in the US. So, if you were to buy a GSM Hero, it would work on either T-Mobile US or AT&T, but the best you would get, data wise, is EDGE whilst you are in the US. When you come back to the UK, you would be able to get 3G.
The US Hero, otherwise known as the Sprint Hero, is a CDMA device. This will not work at all on any UK networks.
Regards,
Dave
cool thanks for reply's dave.. looks like im gonna get one. ok so does anyone know where i could pick one up while im there.. im staying in west hollywood.
Why do you want to physically buy one in the US?
You can buy one from Expansys in the US for $540, or in the UK for £370 (with £30 worth of vouchers).
Assuming you could find a local retailer which stocks them in West Hollywood with prices similar to Expansys, you'd have to pay sales tax on it @ 9.75% would bring the cost pretty close to £370.
Regards,
Dave
becasue i have loads of usd to burn and not loads of GBP are you glad you now know my business......anyway back to where a retailer might be
i dont thing it would have uk 3g
would it?
Sorry probably none of my business but what use would the Sprint hero serve you in the UK since it is not possible to connect to any UK network or did I misunderstand. Wouldn't you be better off with the UK hero, at least that one could be rooted. Personally I would rather have that one, but the grass is always greener right.

umm...there is no non-sprint hero in the US. The cdma hero aka the US hero aka the SPRINT hero is ONLY available on sprint and from sprint. This phone does not use a sim card or any thing like it, when you turn one on for the first time it automatically connects to the sprint network and is linked to the number of the sprint subscriber that purchases by the phones unique ESN number, which cannot be changed legally. If you want a chinless hero, the one that is available on sprint and does not look at all like the UK hero, it will only and can only connect to CDMA networks and as far as I know only sprint. So no my post was not A wrong, I admitted to being kinda lost I just asked what use would a phone that you can not use as a phone serve you, a also asked if I had misunderstood, which I am sure now that I did not, you seem to be the lost one. When you get your US hero and try to unlock it for a gsm network, where are you going to stick the SIM card, please send me a video of you trying to put it into the phone, that will be fun to watch.

Any T-Mobile USA users get the phone yet?

I'm thinking about picking one up for review. I'm on T-Mobile and I know the phones come unlocked, but I want to be sure there aren't any hidden surprises or anything like that. If I put in a T-Mobile USA sim card, am I guaranteed to get Edge signal?
Where did you find out that this phone will come unlocked on T-Mobile?

He never said that.
He asked if the unlocked i9100 will at least get edge on tmobile network.
good question..wonder if anybody will get it
I think most of the world uses the same frequencies for UMTS EDGE, so yes... an international Galaxy S II should work on T-mobile with EDGE, though you will have to program all of the tower/apn data into the phone manually to get everything to work
Probably not worth extra cost and effort to get a phone which will always be slow due to frequency mis-match.
It would only work on 2g for T-mobile USA.
I'll enjoy the G2X for now and then switch to the SGS2 when it get's to T-Mobile.

Bump, still wondering if ant T-Mobile users got the phone yet.
I've placed an order with Handtec, but thanks to a long back-and-forth security process I have to wait for next weeks batch of devices (ugh).
I'm assuming 2g will work fine - I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't. I've bought international phones for use on T-mo back in the pre-3g days, which in a way I'm still stuck in. Rural Iowa is not exactly blanketed in 3g...
Off-topic.

If you are to follow the naming convention above, then this new phone that passed the FCC should be for T-Mobile.
GT-I9100T (GS2) - T-Mobile
it will work on 2g but nothing else until the version that supports tmobiles AWS 3g/4g bands os released. im thinking about pulling the trigger anyways

3G/4G will not work as they use 1700/2100 instead of 850/1900
you'll only get EDGE/2G
Hi I have a SGS2 on tmobile USA. Here are the issues. I phone is ASIA version rooted.
Tried a few mods didnt like it much.
Big issue is the phone defaults to GSM (2g) and the only other option on the phone is WCDMA. On tmobile it doesnt show edge or HSPA so I can connect for faster speeds.
I went to the tmob store the guy said the firmware needs to be updated but samsung doesnt have anything new.
I am hoping to download stock mod from say europe or canada that enables 4G to see if itll work on tmob. I called tmob they said they cant help as they dont support the phone! i asked for the bands that tmob uses 3G/4G on ( they refused to give it to me)
Tmob came in late in the game for 3g/4g so im not sure if they are on some diff bands that the phone cant catch. although i have not tried inserting an Att sim in it to see if it will get 4g speeds.
if anyone knows of any other options please let me know at this point im paying for 4G speeds on tmob but getting 2G.

Dude, the GS2 doesn't support T-mobile bands. Therefore you'll only get EDGE speed on that phone until you get their Variant or switch to AT&T.

You can never get past 2g on T-Mobile, ever. It's a hardware issue not software, you are stuck with EDGE speeds unless you switch to AT&T.
Thanks... I guess ill be selling this phone if I have to remain on Tmob.. or get me an atnt account! tmob has the least expensive plans .

You can get a cheap medianet plan and get 3g since AT&T will not recognize this as a smartphone, the plan is unlimited too

[Q] A question about AT&T / T-Mobile 4G

Hi, I'm in California and I have an Motorola Atrix with AT&T and I just unlocked my phone because I'm about to switch to T-mobile...
However, my friend told me that AT&T and T-Mobile has different 4G networks. He said the AT&T Atrix can not use 3G or 4G speed on a T-Mobile network, It can only go up to Edge speed.... Is that true? Does anyone know about this?
Hope some people can help me here ...
Thank you

From everything I have read that is correct, but also know that it won't be much longer till you are back as an AT&T customer since they are acquiring T-Mobile.

Its true. While both AT&T and T-Mobile use HSPA+ for their "4G" speeds, they run on different bands. If you want 3G/4G, use a T-Mobile phone. Otherwise, enjoy EDGE. Opera Mini with images set to low will be a big help.
T-Mobile leases cellular space from AT&T which is why unlocked AT&T phones can use T-Mobile service. Not sure if it is the phone's software issue that is causing the 4G/3Gnot working. It's possible that T-mobile implemented their so called 4G first but it's still AT&T equipment.....I work for AT&T. Also 4G, is just higher speed 3G, 4G LTE won't be rolling out until next year.
Thank you for the quick reply... I need to get a T-Mobile phone then.

Good job on the misinformation front.
And also not being helpful, I'm going to assume your in sales and don't actually know anything.
Now on to the OP's question.
T-Mobile uses the same type of technology as AT&T however they operate on different bands. As such most devices that are sold on AT&T will be able work on T-Mobile for phone and edge but don't get 3g or hspa+ due to the radio in the device only supporting some of the bands. Which is why as a general rule AT&T phones such as the iphone, will work on T-Mobile if unlocked but can't use 3g because it doesn't have the ability to operate in the correct MHZ range. Its the same going from T-Mobile to AT&T. My HD2 was awesome, other then the slow data. *Not that my atrix or inspire are much better.
There are exceptions to the rule though. You'll have to check to see which bands the Atrix is capable of using. I know some of the Samsung devices had all the GSM bands so they worked fine on all networks.
the answer is NO the atrix will not work on tmobile USA 3G or 4G network. there, done!

Problem is that if/when the AT&T/T-mobile merger goes through, AT&T will likely flip Tmobile's 3g towers to 4g. All tmobile 3G phones...sorry no more 3g unless you buy a new phone. yay....

They won't just flip a switch and everyone has to buy new phones. They will be phased out as people finish contracts and begin new ones. If they don't, they'll be buying T-Mobile customers all new phones or paying fatcat lawyers to defend them from all the lawsuits.

Agreed, sorry I used the term 'flip', never meant to say it would happen instantly . The article I linked stated the switch would take several years. That's not written in stone though, AT&T could move up the timeline if they are losing too many customers to Verizon and Sprint.
This is only an issue if you plan on keeping your tmobile 3g phone for YEARS, which is not likely for anyone that frequents xda .

Titan II

Hello all!!
I have a new Titan II and have unlocked it from AT&T. So now I use it on T-Mobile.
Here is my issue-I can not send or recieve picture messages.
I also want to get 4G more permanent.
If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance to all.
I have found one other issue.
I can not tether/internet share the Titan II.
So, so far we have a total of 3 problems/issues.
1) Not able to send or receive picture messages.
2) Not able to 4G regularly.
3) Not able to tether/internet share.
So I am sure that someone here knows what to do or how to help me.
I really would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for the help people.
I'd be happy to DONATE to someone if they help with the issues I am having.
Ok your at&t branded Titan 2 is meant to support frequencies : UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ tri-band (2100/1900/850 MHz) and quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and LTE BC4/BC17,
Now I don't know which Freq T-Mobile use in USA but you probably wont be able to use all its features (LTE + 3G) seeing as it's not meant to be used for T-mobile etc, As for Tethering I can only assume if it's not available then it would be down to at&t firmware and you may need to flash a stock ROM to enable everything, If you were to use an at&t sim then all would work including LTE, All in all it's alot of messing about and unfortunately Operators branding limitations do not help.
run HTC Connection Setup to fix MMS and data.
4G is determined by radio frequencies. AT&T 4G is incompatible with T-Mobile 4G; same with 3G.

I'm trying to use a Titan 2 on Tmobile too. MMS doesnt work. with that app, HTC connection setup I get an error message that carrier doesn't exist in database.
Even changed apn to - epc.tmobile.com. still nothing
any help would be appreciated.
I have managed to get 3G working in UK on at&t branded unlocked Titan2 by manually changing APN but cannot send or receive picture messages, 3G works fine, Connection set-up doesn't have the carrier in database, Don't think there is a way round it until it becomes possible to flash a stock Titan2 ROM if one actually exists?
Andy
Thanks alot for the help or at least the insight.
I have updated the APN but still no change.
Not giving up tho. I am sure someone will fugure this out sooner or later.
Tried donating to you...but you have no donate button with in you profile.
If you send me a pm with your info I can get you something for your effort.
Same issue here. Except mines unlocked on Telus. No MMS, group text and of course tethering. HTC Connection also fails on mine.
Funny enough on my Titan 1 all of these work flawlessly on the same sim card and carrier.
I've contacted HTC directly to report the issue about a month or so ago and they claim to be unaware of it. They couldn't provide me a solution so I just said I'd hope that HTC would day fix the HTC Connection app to be supported properly on the Titan 2.
@R1ryda14. Thanks for offer of donation, No need, Just hope I helped.
I gave up and sold my Titan 2, HTC could not help and the conclusion I came to was because it was at&t branded there was no way to manually input the MMS settings seeing as the Connection set-up database only had settings for at&t, I did manage to get 3G working by manual input of APN, The only way to get around this issue was to install a stock ROM, Unfortunately stock ROMs for the Titan 2 do not exist, A real shame as it is a lovely handset and the camera is superb, I hope you do manage to find a solution or that a Stock ROM does eventually materialise
3G/4G on T-Mobile will only work in areas that use the 1900MHz PCS band. T-Mobile uses its 1700MHz AWS band for its 3G/4G services nationwide. They have begun refarming some old 2G spectrum in the 1900MHz PCS band for use on their 3G/4G network recently. The PCS band is the same one that AT&T uses and has included in the Titan II. This is why coverage would be sparse or non-existent on T-Mobile 3G/4G. It all depends on the area you live since their PCS network is only recently being refitted beginning this summer.
I got a Titan 2 too and using it with Vivo here in Brazil. No 4G since we don't have LTE yet, but I got my Internet Sharing working after a hard-reset (don't know why).
Could not set MMS too. HTC Connection also tells me that it does not recognize my Carrier.
My 1st device was a HD7, and I already owned a HTC Ultimate (the HTC Titan here) and in both devices the HTC Connection worked. I dunno why it will not work on Titan 2.

A question regarding US GSM providers on the Photon

A few days ago I found out that T-Mobile's 3g won't work on the Photon (only their Edge service) after I'd already ordered 2 T-Mobile pre-paid SIMs. Yesterday I received my T-Mobile pre-paid SIM cards, and sure enough, it's like being back on dial-up.
When I go to StraightTalk's website to order a SIM card and put in my zip code, it tells me that it will send me an AT&T compatible SIM card. Here's my question: Since AT&T is also GSM, will I still be stuck with 2g speeds or will I be able to get 3g? I know that both AT&T and T-Mobile have good service where I live. (Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I've been on CDMA for almost a decade).
Thanks in advance!

Yes, you will get 3G data speeds. I have 3G data speeds that beat Sprint's 3G speeds.
Make sure to flash the KDDI radio before doing so or you won't get any results.
tmobile is unique in that they use 1700mhz for 3G (which isnt used by any other US carrier). The photon is a quad band (not penta band) phone and doesnt pick up 1700mhz frequency. Tmobile is making a transition to put 3G on 1900mhz so that it is more iphone friendly. Some locations in the US have already made that transition.
Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll finish out this month on T-mobile then switch to straight talk.
