Hi Experts,
Sorry if I sound a little crude and maybe a novice(I am), but I have been a Symbian user so far and finally decided to take the plunge to Android. I received my HTC Hero a couple of days back and tried to connect to Android Market with my google account, but in vain. Tried to use the Google Mail app, but again failed. Am I missing something here? Tried to use HTC Sync with my lappy, but no success.
Provider: Orange UK.
Connectivity: Wifi (No data plan on Sim)
Laptop OS: Win 7 64-bit (connecting usin USB cable)
I have read a lot of threads on xda and on the internet and tried quite a few things, but no success.
Thanks in advance,
Jag
Closing thread as there is another one though not for UK. Will wait for that to resolve.

I had the same problem, and some packet sniffing showed that Android tries to contact google on port 5228/tcp. Our work wifi firewalls non-standard ports, presumably this is why I cannot download from the market (Hangs forever at "starting download") or sign into gtalk over wifi. Switching to 3G data, everything works fine (though the Market stalls a lot).
I had an issue where it wouldn't accept my details unless I entered them in on the initial setup screen.
i.e. if I skipped past the "set up google mail" bit, and went back later, it didn't work.
workaround was reverting to factory install and making sure to enter my account details at the start (and I used wifi since I was in my home, so it should definately work)
It worked for me after i manually set the APN for my carrier.
Please same problem, HTC Magic 32B Ion 1.6, how can I do?
Yes you should always try to log into google at the very start otherwise some problems can be caused.

All OK!
I did a wipe and all ok
How am I supposed to do this after a factory reset if I connect thru wifi, since I must first enable wifi radio and then put a password, so that means I would have to skip the "wizard" so that defeats the purpose of factory resetting everything... please help.
Solved
Logically, what you say is right, but practically it actually worked
1) after the factory reset, i get the google signin screen,
at that moment, my wifi wont be enabled.....but still i went ahead and entered the username and
password and clicked the signin button
as expected it throwed a message saying "it cant connect"
along with it it also said may be you are not on wifi with a
"connect to wifi button", which will take to the wifi screen where you can connect to wifi and it comes back to the google signin screen, where you login again....
.............there you go it signs in successfully now.
Hope this helps
I have this same issue on my galaxy s. Even factory reset and singing in at the beginning doesnt help. What should i do?

Hi
I am facing the same problem with my device (Galaxy S2). I am able to surf web with the stock phone browser using wifi, but apps won't connect. Apps connect only through GPRS.
I was wondering if you were able to resolve the issue. Could you please help me ?
Anyone else has a solution to this problem.
My phone has the stock firmware, purchased the phone today.
Apps have never worked over wifi, but the browser works.
Cannot download anything on wifi, for that only my GPRS/3G works.
Please help
I have been using my desire for over a year and it has been great, but now I also have this problem of no market or google mail over my WiFi. I was going to do a factory reset and start again, but after reading the posts on this thread this may not resolve the problem.
Has anyone found a fix for this problem
I have this problem too. I doubt it's the manufacture deliberately use its stock sbf to stop people using wifi to save data bandage. So they can make more money with the mobile operators!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281034
me too I guess
well i was having a similar problem(would connect to wifi, the browser worked but not the apps).in my case, i have my router setup with the dhcp server off(you have to assign an static ip address manually to every device you that you are going to connect to the router) i solved my problem by enabling the "use static ip" check box and filling all the information(ip address, gateway, netmask, dns 1 and dns 2)on the advance settings tab in wifi settings.
I've tried a few different custom ROMs on here, and recently most seem to be sufferring from the same issue. It's been happening to me for a couple of months now, I'm not sure if it's a 6.5 bug, or some other software package or whatever. I will say I just recently got a replacement phone for another problem, and it's doing the same thing as my old phone. At my work, we require a 4-digit password and for the phone to lock within an hour for our Exchange server sync.
For whatever reason, when I put custom ROM's on there and sync, within about 3 days at most my device will totally wipe. It wipes the storage card, everything. And it's a real pain in the ass to try to keep my settings for very long. I'm just curious if anyone else is seeing the same issue? I just figure, probably not a lot of people require a password so it doesn't happen to a lot of people. It seems to only affect 6.5 ROMs for whatever reason.
Shameless bump. Sorry, just want to make sure, someone has to have seen this, maybe not though.
I can really only confirm this happens on two ROMs. I don't want to call anyone out because it might be a WM6.5 bug and not a chef's fault.
sheps rom works for me, it is the only rom I have used so i cannot confirm your question about other roms not working. good luck and if i were you try Sheps rom, very fast and stable rom, and it looks good to.

I use exchange at work and have only seen this once, and the problem for me was the security code was input incorrectly more than 7 times and all data was erased even the microsd card. I was quite pissed but thats the only time I've seen it.

It's similar to that, it used to be where I would leave the phone sitting there for a while and come back to it and it would say "if you input your password incorrectly one more time...blah blah". And no matter what i do, it would wipe my device. Now usually i just turn the screen on and the skinned keys don't show up, it's just the old one. Pressing the keys does nothing at all, i usually reset the device, then it wipes on the next reboot.
at one time i thought it was related to either plugging it into the charger or a computer because it would usually do it right after that. I see it happen no matter what now though, i could just have it sitting there and it will do it.

Well obviously one of them is NRG's ROM, I have also seen this in TPC's ROM. Hard to say what's similar between the two...I can't confirm too many others though as I don't usually switch that often, just when the one's I like to use update.
Yep. I've had the very same 'feature' happen to me too. Cannot properly identify what's causing it either.
Cheers
Have you checked with your Exchange Admin... I believe there is a feature that allows them to remote wipe (or at least setup the parameters) devices attached to the server... They may be wiping your device because it shows up as a foreign device... Just stabbing in the dark, it may not be a rom based issue, but an exchange issue... It happens with custom roms, did it happen with the stock rom...?

Good suggestion, although I am the Exchange admin, so no, I'm not wiping my own device.
I have never seen it happen on a stock ROM, although I usually don't have one on for very long. I've never seen it in 6.1 either, just 6.5 ROMs from about late June thru now.
OK, 3 ROM's now, RRE just did it to me. It must be a 6.5 bug or an Exchange server bug.

That would be cool if you could. I have a feeling since it happened on two phones and multiple ROMs that it will happen to anyone. I just feel that no one really requires a password. Just make sure you set a maximum number of attempts before wipe, I have the default of 8 set. Use one of the ROMs I mentioned if you don't already.
im not using exchange and it has happened to me with one of the roms.
the chef didn't really know what do with it or what's causing it, all i know is that it has never happened to me before, and after changing to shep's rom it hadn't happen since.
give shep's rom a try.
I'd think your Exchange server is having issues. There should be logs to see if a remote wipe was ever performed on your device. Are you sure your kids or annoying friends didn't try to unlock your phone a few times which may have caused the remote wipe?
This just happened to me on Sunday, running my own-cooked 23033 ROM (and about a week earlier as well)
I hadn't even tried inputting a password - my phone had been locked, and when I looked at it, I got the message about having one more chance to enter the password (which it wouldn't let me do - the phone was completely locked up). Since this had happened to me before (I had JUST finished putting most of the stuff back on my 16GB microSDHC card), I quickly removed the card, put in the correct password, and watched my phone hard reset.
So no, you're not crazy. It may be related to Exchange, but I doubt it. I think it's more related to Pin Lock, because after 5 unsuccessful attempts to unlock a device (whether it's synched with Exchange or not I believe), the phone is supposed to hard reset to protect your personal data. There must be a glitch with Pin Lock in some of the 6.5 builds that causes this on occasion. I'm not sure what it is, though.
Did a bit of research ...
Apparently, a trusted application can initiate an erase-and-format operation by calling a LoadLibrary function in Fatutil.dll. There a registry key that controls full device erasure is:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\<MyProfileName>\FATFS]
"SecureWipe"=dword:1
Also, there is this key which controls LocalWipe and RemoteWipe based on the Password Required Policy (4131) setting.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Security\Policy\LASSD\DeviceWipeThreshold]
"4146"=1 through 4294967295 (0xFFFFFFFF)
4146 = SECPOLICY_LASS_DESKTOP_QUICK_CONNECT
Apparently, setting "4146" to zero (0) or 4294967295 (0xFFFFFFFF) disables the feature.
This is really going to suck if it turns out that some ROM packages now include LocalWipe/RemoteWipe as some form of anti cross-porting device protection.

Well that's good, i was starting to feel crazy. Exact same symptoms though, phone is just sitting there, locked, and when i turn the screen off I get that message. Most of the time the screen appears to be locked at this point, i'll try a reset and it boots, wipes instantly, reboots and runs through hard reset. I am preparing to install a few Exchange updates, so we'll see if that corrects it. I did check and our last major update was in April, and this started happening in late June, so I don't think it's Exchange either.

Thanks for that! If someone could be so kind as to whip that into a cab file, that would be great. Might at least give a temporary fix for this until it's figured out. I keep re-flashing new ROM's and hoping it'll go away one of these times.
I would bet that the suggestion of remote wiping is the best track to follow. Perhaps the "Managed Programs" feature is somehow automatically set in your exchange environment and creating the problem? Although I do not know what I am talking about, just guessing. Seems like a security issue with your exchange/phone set-up. Try replicating the issue with the radio off. At least then you will know if it is an Over The Air Issue or something set on the phone itself.
Sounds like a real pain. Good luck sorting it out.
Doug M.
Before putting together any form of .CAB, it would be worthwhile for those experiencing the problem to provide the following feedback:
Is it only occurring on devices receiving policies from an Exchange Server
Are the registry entries I noted above present and what are their values
Is the issue specific to certain ROM builds
Is there perhaps a common set of packages in use
Cheers,

This issue was reported with my 23034 ROM by a user who syncs with Exchange. I do not sync with Exchange, and my unmodified ROM does not contain the DeviceWipeThreshold key.
There's a thread started by a poster named zimo in the General forum that describes the same issue-I'd link to it except I'm on my fuze. It's several months old, and was just bumped.
So in an effort to improve battery life, I would like to set my Google email and calender sync via exchange server to only sync every 2 hours instead of "as items arrive"
I know where to set this up and when I do, it is ok until I do a soft reset, then it always reverts back to "as items arrive".
Does anyone know how to make these settings for only sync every couple of hours service a soft reset?
Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks, but this doesn't do anything for me either, I powered down normally and still the sync as items as they arrive still gets enabled.

ok, next question. Is the exchange server one you setup or was it setup by someone else? If it was the later then you may find there is a device policy in effect preventing this change.
I use Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 small business server. I have no device policies configured and i have no issues changing the sync schedule. I should also say i setup and configured the whole server.

There must be something funky with your server configuration then or it's a bug that i'm not aware of in the version of the rom you are using. Are you using the latest energy 21xxx rom or the aug28 version?
I am running energy august 28 21914 version. I have been using energy roms since my tp2 days but have never tried to do this. i am just basicly just trying to get 20 hours worth.of battery life out of this phone.
thank you
jeff
Try to configure your device with a very small period of "peak time" and thus almost all day "off peak"
That way at least the period of synching "when they arrive" will be reduced to a minimum.
try turning off push mail in settings, should help ya I think.

Thanks, I just tried that too, (I have previously been using native WM activesync to set this) and I get the same results. I set it to check once an hour both peak and non peak and after a soft reset, it does back to as it arrives.
If I just disable push via the comm manager, the settings get set to manually check.
Thank you for your input.
I am still stuck with this.
Jeff
I received my SGS2 on Monday - pre-installed with the latest firmware (KE7) - and had problems immediately trying to get Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync configured.
I entered my configuration, consisting of
email address
Domain: user name
password
Exchange server
and a tick in the 2 SSL boxes
but kept getting error messages like:
Setup could not finish
Unable to connect Server
or
Setup could not finish
Activation failed. Unable to connect to network. Try again with network provider's default APN.
And before anyone asks, I did have a working data connection (automatically configured) and had no problems with internet access, email, weather updates on the widget, downloading apps from the store, etc, etc. I tried lots of different values for exchange, did a number of hard resets, etc - no joy. And then I brought the phone home, connected to my wifi and tried again. It worked!
I didn't believe it myself, so the next day I did the following:
Hard reset, wiped everything including cache.
Switched on phone, entered details for exchange - same error message as above
Drove home, outside the house, switched on wifi, entered my connection details and tried again (the details that previously failed were still on the screen, I reused them with no changes)
And it worked!
I would have thought that any application, including the Exchange configuration utility on my phone, would be agnostic as to how its data was delivered to our corporate exchange server; O2 GSM data or BT home broadband connection through a wireless router, who cares?
Anyway, this was driving me mad before I stumbled on this "solution" and hopefully the above can help someone. I'll also pass this info back to Samsung.
Before I go, does anyone want to comment on what the problem could be - O2 network blocking some type of traffic, hardcoded values deep in the configuration utility, etc, etc?
Hi,
Me too facing the same issue with my Samsung Ace S5830. I tried to configure my outlook with same module from other set it worked perfectly fine. I am facing issue with only my mobile set.
So I guess its not generic problem across all mobile set.
If any one is aware of this, please help ?
Regards,
Satish
FIXED !!!
I rang my network provider - o2 - and explained my problem. I was expecting to be told that if my data was working for other things then it wasn't their problem if there was an issue with my exchange client.
I was wrong! The guy I spoke to took me through the config in:
Settings - Wireless and network - Mobile networks - Access Point Names
Basically, we blew away the existing APN config and entered a new one from scratch. If I remember correctly, the new entries were the same as the old with the exception of Proxy and Port. These had values in the original APN I was using and they were left blank in the new one.
And it worked!
The o2 network - or more specifically the proxy - was not liking some of the data produced by the exchange client (which was SSL) and was refusing it.
So, lessons learned:
O2 support for me was great
If you have a similar problem, try ringing up your provider and ask them if the APN settings (which are usually automatically generated) are correct for your device.
I couldnt get the Exchange Server settings to work on my brand new i9100, I've installed Touchdown and it appears to have fixed the problem with the native exchange setup
Setup could not finish - fix
I have been looking for the fix for the problem;
Setup could not finish
Activation failed. Unable to connect to network. Try again with network provider's default APN
In the end the fix was simple in my case, I had the wrong date and time. Once I had corrected the date and time it setup perfectly.
Hope this helps

Yes.. I tried 2 days later...
It sounds funny, but it worked with any changes...! :S
I'm in exactly the same boat. Everything was fine on Friday and then I tried a new ROM (KI8 based Touche X-Power) and, all of a sudden, Exchange no longer works. No reflash, no wipe and reinstall. I've also tried official ROM's but it just point blank refuses to set up. Touchdown works, but in-built Exchange doesn't. This is very, very strange. Is there an explanation that anyone can give? I'm stumped...
activation failed
I have the same issues. Today I upgraded to gingerbread then to cognition 5.2 and now I cannot get exchange set up. I dont know if its due to the upgrade or a total coincidence. I get the "activation failed. unable to connect to network. try again with networks providers default APN" I'm using the same exact settings for domain, exchange server, etc. as before but it will not work.
same here. from lightining rom (2.3.4) to 2.3.5 roms. same issues with all the roms.
+1 To this problem. No idea what is causing it. Tried flashing to Villain ROM, had the issue. Flashed to Lightning ROM, same thing. Had to flash back to an older ROM because this problem was so annoying! Didn't work on either Wifi or 3G, with everything double and triple checked. Seems to work fine on my older ROM.
Same issue here. I've only been on stock with an At&t SG2. It was fine intially...I then wiped the phone for personal reasons and now I get this same error... try again with network provider's default apn. I tried with Touch Down and Enhanced Email and it works fine, but no luck with the native client. Very odd!! Btw, my device runs 2.3.4.
I hope someone is able to pinpoint the problem.
Same issue here.
Was on Cog. 1.51, exchange was working fine, flashed CM7 for a couple of days again no issues, now went back to 1.51 and getting the above messages. Wiped, cleared cache, etc, nothing works.
Same issue here. It was working fine when I originally configured it on Friday night. I wanted to change my google account on the device, so I did factory reset. Now I can't add my exchange accounts.
I contacted the Rogers (wireless provider) as well as Samsung Canada (useless weekend support staffs). Rogers points to Samsung. Samsung points to my company's MIS team!?!?!?!
Anyhow, I read the activation dialogue box again and again.
"By activating this application you accept that part of your movile phone data will be stored, processed and used by Samsung for the purpose of reporting activation of the application to the licensors of the application s/w itself. Such data held by Samsung will be dealt with strictly in accordance with Samsung's privacy policy. A copy of the policy is available upon request. Continue?"
It looks like it's trying to contact Samsung server to register the Exchange activation. I'm guessing they're trying to count number of exchange (activesync) users. Maybe, to pay greedy Microsoft.
I'm going to try again tomorrow.
glad to know there are many others, just flashed touch x rom, it actually worked, but the video playback was stuttering so i thought to flash it one more time,...and then cant activate exchange mail...tried flashing other roms didnt work, but a revert back to stock rom from nandroid backup works...getting confused here also
This has been driving me nuts for the last day and a half, funny that this topic's just exploded with replies. Sounds like it's a problem with Samsung's servers (Or their mail provider, Seven) activating the device for exchange. Vexingly, it worked absolutely fine until I switched ROMs and had to re-enter the settings, I've wiped all data multiple times and flashed many a ROM to try and fix it, but still no joy. Glad to hear I'm not alone, at least, sounds like we'll have to wait for Samsung to fix it.
In the meantime, people, don't remove your exchange setup.
EDIT: Emailed Samsung NZ about it, looking forward to their response.
i'm having this problem too.
I was on kh3 rom, all work perfectly.
Then (why? why? why?) i changed yesterday to the ki3.
No more exchange, i gone back to the kh3 but nothing changed, same problem.
On wifi, 3g, also using the wifi connection on the same network of the server exchange.
Any ideas? I need those email for work ç_ç
Me too.on cm7 works
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Since we have to wait for Samsung (Or possibly Seven) to fix it, your best bet is to use another email client like K-9 (Free in the market) or one of the AOSP ones floating around. This is only an issue with the stock Samsung email application, so CM7 & MIUI et al will be fine.
You can try putting a tick in the 'set as premium account' box, which will sync email at push through the social hub - but that will only work if your exchange server supports POP or IMAP. That method will only sync email, not contacts and such, and it might not be the best idea for confidential work mail anyway. Still, beats not having any email access on the device..
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
To begin I love this ROM, it removes all the bloat and looks great; I just have a few problems I can't seem to resolve.
1. When I first set up my google account I managed to sync my gmail, contacts, etc. just fine to the phone. However when I tried to use either Google Plus or Google Now I was receiving both connection errors or security errors (Couldn't sign in - A problem occurred while communicating with Google Servers.). I managed to solve the latter by removing the network time synchronization options, however the connection problem persists. If I leave these options disabled all of my google apps cease to function so I've re-enabled them. Note at no point in time did my data stop working, I can browse the net just fine on the phone.
I have noticed that someone did post about similar issues in the main thread for the rom, however I was unable to find the solution they used to solve the problem. I would appreciate any help that could be provided.
If it is of any help I did attempt to flash Speed Rom, and it doesn't have these issues, so it leads me to believe it is some sort of configuration error.
2. GPS doesn't appear to be getting a lock. I'm indoors so this may be the reason for it not working, however the icon shows that it has gathered a lock, but my accuracy remains at 30 meters. I will test this further when I am out and about tomorrow to see if it works any better.
1. This problem came from Google server that has been widely reported on other forums as well. Honestly I don't know how to fixed it but I would recommend you try to re-flash the rom. Perhaps the data were save while Google server acted up and hence it saved to your phone. I personally turn-off the Google Now since it consumed too much battery though.
2. GPS: Download GPS Status & Toolbox or Faster Fix to get the right regional for your location. read the description when downloading those app since they may required Busybox installed
In order for GPS fast and accurate locked, sometime you need to turn-on Google Location service
Good luck
First and foremost, thank you for your response.
I did as you suggested and re-installed the rom. This time before doing anything else I enabled only my wifi and attempted to add an account right away.
System Settings > Accounts & sync > ADD ACCOUNT
Doing this left me with the following message:
"Couldn't sign in
Can't establish a reliable connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your android device may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care."
Note this is over wifi not 3G. I have tried a few times to re-flash this rom and that doesn't seem to help. Any other idea's?
Did you, by any chance, turn-on data in setting>mobile data ?
This last time I didn't. Since I was using wifi I figured I wouldn't need to turn on my data?

Doesn't hurt to try my friend
By turning on 3G I have managed to log into my account and have it sync. However I am still getting a "Sign-in error".
Also the browser was unable to sync so I've disabled that. Now when I launch Google Plus I get the following:
"No connection
Couldn't connect to the server."
And with Google Now I'm getting
"Network error..."
Had this problem earlier too. It happened to me because I didn't do a data wipe when upgrading from Craigtuts earlier rom. HTH
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda app-developers app
Just a quick update, I have managed to get this ROM working.
There was suggestion in the original thread, by Ninjistix, for this ROM suggesting the installation of SpeedROM 7.8. Once installed go ahead and log into your google account, then flash this ROM by "formatting" / "wiping" everything except data. THIS DID NOT WORK FOR ME.
Out of desperation, I decided to restore my backed up STOCK rom. After doing so I, I logged into my google account and found that everything was working, no sign-in errors from anything at all. So I wiped everything EXCEPT data, flashed this rom and its been working perfectly since.
I'd like to thank Ninjistix for inspiring my fix and craigtut for making such a beautiful rom. Hopefully one of these two methods works for everyone else trying to flash this ROM.

thanks for the shout out, i was just coming here to direct you to one of my other post's related to that annoying sign-in error, we still haven't figured out the main reason behind it yet, but i as long as we have the work around of keeping the (user) data then i guess "all's well that ends well"
