Hi. I just ordered the HTC Hero but I'm not sure what version OS it will ship with.
Whats the official latest? Will I have to root and all that stuff to install it?
What are Radio's? What do they do? Why would I need to install/update one?
Are there any risks or downsides to rooting the device?
If I do the official update, will I lose the ability to install custom ROMs? If I root it to install custom ROMs, will I lose the ability to install official updates?
Thats all for now... I might ask more questions.
Thanks in advance.
Well done! You do have some tastes!
Just forget about all your questions. Get used to Hero first.

Fair enough, thanks
But I know people just say "dont mess up". I'm just curious as to what the worst case scenario is if you DO mess up.

Worst case scenario?
What happened to *this* guy: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=585269
But you'd really have to be not careful when you do things...
Main things to remember when you're looking at things: if it doesn't say CDMA, it's likely for the GSM version of the phone and won't work.
If all else fails: ask here about specifics...and if it still breaks things, there's always the RUUs for your provider (assuming it's on the list: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622)
Hm cool, thanks!
I'll most likely only install the latest *official* RUU when I get my phone. Modding I guess will have to wait a bit, but its good to know that effing up is ... hard
Use and enjoy your Hero and determine what do you want from it ie usb tethering, skype on 3, sip application for which no roots needed. At present wifi tethering does need root. So not everyone will want to go root way.
If you still go root way , I suggest to read about it. Reading is harder! And its a 10 minute job once fully understood.
Alright well I got my HTC HD2 a few weeks ago, and I was searching around Google and stumbled apon xda-developers.com I found a few cool things for my phone like CHT, and a few other apps...but I dont see the big picture here. What are ROMs? Are they operating systems? and what does everyone mean by "flashing a rom" or something like that. Haha im sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forum. Could someone just enlighten me on this stuff, and maybe suggest some cool things I can do to my phone, or some apps i should get.
First off the search button is your friend ...
So I am going to give you a quick explanation and you can search and look in the various threads for your answers ....
A ROM is the the component of your phone where your Operating system and included apps are stored ...
The term ROM on this site refers to "Replacements" for the stock system that is installed on your phone, sometimes there are updated stock ROMs here too ..
There are certain things you need to know before considering flashing a ROM and you can find that info in various threads here ...
If you have a TMO US HD2 then you have to make sure the ROM is compatible, TMO US HD2 is a little different than the International one , more ram for one thing.
Now some ROMs have more things than a stock ROM some have less, it is all about personal choice when it comes down to that, some ROMS are more stable than others, some are faster, just depends ....
The Developers of these ROMs, or "Cooks or Chefs" as they like to be called, may do some serious customizing to their ROMs or leave them close to stock, again a personal choice for you ...
I would suggest you do some reading on Flashing, and about your hardware, the only problem with starting to flash your phone is, it is addictive ....
Hope this helped ....
p.s. Read Read Read, and make sure you understand what you are getting into, you can turn your phone into an expensive paperweight if you are not careful ...

Hahahahaha. You too? Yeah we got these like the week after they came out and a buddy of mine told me about this site and I've been hooked on it since. Then the GF gets mad when I'm looking stuff and chaning themes and stuff. She says that its stupid, but the second i offer to change the theme on her phone, it ain't stupid then
Didnt realize i was an addict till i saw the posting of one of your bookmark tab being this forum. :s
Now that you've mentioned it, my gf would be angry when i am with my 'gadget' cos this hd2 is like a swiss army knife for me. Using it for picts, vids, games, work, net..heck, this current hd2 doesnt even do calls. Only does my mobile broadband.
btw. there's no perfect rom.(before you ask this) The only perfect ones are the ones that you favour most.
GF is one thing, wife is another entirely.
But I agree, its not so stupid when you are improving her phone
my gf claims I'm having an affair with my phone/xda
She wants me to go "cold turkey"..... Not happening!
I'm kinda worried that when i try to type "gf" the xt9 tries to change it to "hd".....
maybe its trying to get her out of the picture....
Hi there, I'm a Dream and Desire owner who has rooted both handsets and I'm reasonably confident I can follow instructions
A colleague at work has just ordered the Hero on Orange (UK), and she's gone online and started reading up on it - first mistake! She's come across a few complaints concerning the Orange ROM and she's asked me "the phone guy" how easy it is to load the HTC ROM onto her phone.
I was caught on the hop, having never even seen a Hero in real life, nor followed the XDA forums for this particular handset. I have a few questions for you guys, if you don't mind - will likely save me hours of reading
1. What version of Android are Orange dishing out on their Heros atm? Donut or Eclair?
2. Depending on the answer to above, please point me in the direction of a rooting guide for the thing.
3. If I can root, what's the best developer ROM around for SPEED and STABILITY? This is a one time thing, I don't want her running back to me every other week, with problems that I can't solve there and then without flashing the thing all the time.
4. If root can't be achieved, can I use a goldcard method to load up the HTC ROM instead? Show me where/how please.
5. What are the known problems with the Orange ROMs - is it even worth me going to the trouble? Will loading up the HTC ROM make a noticeable difference for her?
Finally, she hasn't even got the thing yet, and since I've never had it I can't imagine what probs she may run into. It would be nice to educate her and get on these forums reading and doing stuff herself, but I don't think that will happen tbh. With that in mind I'm looking for suggestions to optimise the thing for permanent daily use. I don't want bleeding edge, just as much performance as I can squeeze out of it without compromising reliability.
Many thanks for your replies - don't be afraid to get technical with me!

1) Should be 1.5 (can't remember codename) as I don't think they have finished customising their own 2.1 ROM.
I doubt many carriers will do 2.1 on shipped phones, as hero is at end of life tbh and likely won't be made in large enough quantities to justify using new ROM.
2) http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375
3) VillainROM 12 or any other final GSM WWE should be fine. Just test if a little and it should be fine. Watch out for OC settings if you want it to be noob-proof. Go for safe settings.
4) That guide explains all methods
5) No idea. IMHO carrier ROMs are all crap, just like stock ones. No root is the big one for me.
Just install a decent ROM for this last point. Anything recent that's been up for a while without many updates should be fine
Thanks anon2122, that helps me out a lot

Unfortunately not right now, as the server appears to be down
But it will be back soon. When it is, go to development forum, then in the list of announcements is one for radio rom download links.
Click that, and take the second newest one iirc. Or read the later posts for people confirming which version works on which network.

For the record, you XDA folk are amazing.
Are there folks out there by region that would help other folks such as myself (for appropriate fee, Starbucks menu-configuration) who are complete NOOB IDIOTS that would upgrade (change ROM) on our machines for us, or in the alternative, or show us how.
Info would be good to know and you guys good at same could make some....coffee money. Region of interest to me: central california.
Bless you for what you do.
Question: If I upgrade to a better ROM than out of the box, will I be able to use Adroid Market and do most normal things that an Android can do????
Thanks again. You guys that submerge yourself into this stuff are superheros!
Look in my signature. Yes, all custom roms have full market access.

Honestly if you have an hour or two to read through the numerous walkthroughs that are out there for the G-tablet you will be fine. These are very forgiving, and even if you do mess something up, chances are more than likely you will be able to recover it. I would suggest not only reading up on how to root/flash a new rom, but read through and prepare to do an NVflash, so if/when your device sticks at the 3 little birds, you wont have to worry and can be happy (bob marley).

Use Google translate. You have to join the site. You have to wait 24 hours. Then you have to click on the link in the first post, it will send you to an empty post for you to make, you make that post (anything you put there is fine), and then you can go back to the first post and download the updated rom. There are two versions of the rom, one for flashing from the card and one for flashing with the cable.
Sorry, I have nowhere to upload it for you, so I can't send you my copies.
I am waiting for my phone to arrive. I got the Etotalk rom, so my hope is that they are using the updated rom version and it will already be fixed.

My guess is that he really is talking about the G2S. This is a known problem, and Jiayu immediately issued the updated rom to correct this problem. In addition, the web page says that after installation of the new rom, the user must not touch the screen during the first boot before the unlock slider appears. Here are their words, as translated by Google:
Note: After the upgrade is complete, the first boot, the phone screen did not appear before sliding unlock switch, the phone can not power off (do not pull the battery), the hands can not touch the screen, otherwise it will affect the touch screen problem correction! ! !

Yeah, I don't like having to look all over the place. I was posting at least some in the Jiayu G2 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736279
Maybe that is the best place to take our conversations? The G2S is very different from the G2, so I don't know if that is right either.
I'm very interested in getting a ClockworkMod Recovery image for this phone. But I don't have the phone yet, so there is little I can do yet.

Yes, I posted in the same thread as well. I feel a little bit lost between the g2 and the g3 related stuff.
Have you ordered a G2S already?
I'am very close to it. The only thing I'am still missing is a decent review of the first batch devices which are sold at the moment and reliable information about the fixing of the jump screen problem. I'am not very keen on getting a G2S and have to realize that the jump screen is based on a hardware problem. I could not read anywhere that the jump screen problem is really sorted out with the last software update. It is only mentioned that it has been improved as far as I understood the posts in the chinese forums.
To build a cwm recovery for the G2S should not be a problem, I reckon.

No, I don't think I have any more information than you. I have been looking at the Jiayu forums for information as well. It seems that the "official" Jiayu statement is that the jump screen problem is fixed by the software update: http://bbs.ejiayu.com/thread-395114-1-1.html
It's a bit more comforting to hear that they acknowledge the problem and have (are?) working on it. All of the other problems mentioned in that post are not causing me to worry.
Unfortunately my previous phone broke, so I am forced to wait no longer. So I ordered the phone already. Although it is DHL shipping, I think it might take some time to arrive. I ordered it from Etotalk and had them install their mod rom. I had already asked if it was based on the newest rom and they replied that it was. But I would suggest waiting for a while if you possibly can. There is always some risk when you buy a phone from a lower tier manufacturer and they are using really new technology.
While I wait for my phone, I need to learn how to use the tools for creating a CWM Recovery. I have already created a modified rom from the official download, but I have no phone to install it on. Unfortunately, I don't find a recovery.img file in the rom I downloaded. I am assuming I will need to pull it from the rom on the phone when I get it, but maybe I just don't know where to look for it. Any help anyone has would be appreciated.

There is a great tutorial how to create a recovery mod for the G2S here. As soon as I get a G2S I will build a recovery following that tutorial.
Like you I have read through all the well known forums and not that well known forums to gather all information I could get regarding the mediatek chipset 6577 phones. Now the time has come to make use of it. Difficult to wait any longer.
Btw, I read that DHL express delivers bloody fast, only 4 days for shipping from China to Germany was the best. I hold thumbs that you'll get it as fast as that lucky guy.
Could you please backup the Etotalk rom before you customize it? Most likely I'am going to order mine at mixe and I would like to test the Etotalk rom.

John

I will definitely backup the Etotalk rom before going any further. But I suspect it is going to have very little changed from the stock rom because I only need English and Traditional Chinese. So it might not be localized in a way that can work well for you (depending on what you need).
I also suspect that it is very easy for them to modify the rom. Already they have Jiayu's official update that is pre-rooted or at least has Superuser in the rom (so rooting will be easy). Then they just delete a few useless apps and the rom is done, as long as it is just in English and Chinese. But any user can delete those apps immediately after rooting, so that is not significant either.
Thanks for the link. I will definitely look at that when I have some time later today or tomorrow.
I will also need to work on installing the tools for backing up and flashing roms. On my Huawei U8220, I made many rom mods and distributed them over at MoDaCo. But I think there will at least be some new things to learn when working with this MediaTek phone.
Maybe it will be time to start an "unofficial" Jiayu G2S thread some time soon. I'd prefer having a good title for the thread (like the G2 thread), and someone who will update the first post when important new information (or roms, etc.) happens. This thread is to specific in the title.
I will also have the Jiayu G2S, it is a very nice phone

Here is a first, very detailed review of the G2S. Very well done. Unfortunately again in chinese. So use Google(-translator).

John

Wow, that was a thorough review! Thanks for the link.
Nice to hear that there was no problem with the jump screen. Still, I will be careful to do two things on the initial boot:
1. Not install the SD card.
2. Not touch the screen until it is done booting.
I had to laugh though: the "Antutu" testing software got translated to "An Bunny". And I know enough Chinese to know why.
My phone will probably ship today. I don't understand why they were having trouble with my address in Chinese characters. :silly:

Regarding the jump screen issue there are two (new) threads in that forum.
As far as I understand it is said that the problem still exists and it (likely) could be a hardware problem.
Hope that is not the case.

John
PS: Regarding the Chinese-English translation: What is meant by "brush"? Is it "update"?
PPS: Bunny is indeed funny.

I believe "brush" = "flash". I should look at the Chinese character to make sure.
I just got my DHL tracking number! My phone is on it's way. Maybe it will arrive by this Saturday? :fingers-crossed:
