Rooting gone wrong(?) - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I have rooted my phone, the Hero, European std.
I used the tutorial on the "TheUnlockr.com", and got to the point where the FlashRec failed, it wasn't supported. The site wrote that if that happened my HTC std rom (2.7...) was fixed, patched for that opportunity of rooting. Although I tried to restart the phone and try again, and then it worked. Strangely I though. But Hey that was cool. It was extremely fast to load the recovery image from the Application, so in my mind it was blinking like, it had gone wrong. I restarted (home+power) into the recovery image, and applied a update.zip
In the new ROM EVERYTHING "unexpectedly stopped working" after another. so i tried the "UNROOT your phone" tutorial on the same site. And it didn't work, the RUU I downloaded displayed an error of that it wasn't the right RUU or something.
After that I started trying to get another updated Recovery image in my phone, Did go quite well, The "recovery-ra-hero-v1.5.2", is no the new image, still if I "flash" a new ROM (2.1) the update way I always ends up with one or to "unexpectedly stopping" of the Settings dialog.. :/
is there any way I can get the HTC 2.7.... ROM in without doing a RUU. Since its not working.

Need help with boot-looping Hero

I've searched the forums, and maybe I've just not searched correctly, or for the right thing, but I've not been able to find any information specific to my problem.
Anyways, here's what's happening.
Just picked up a new Sprint HTC Hero, followed step by step instructions to root the phone, no problems whatsoever. Made my nandroid backup, saved to the root of my sdcard, no issues there.
Immediately afterward, I downloaded the Black Sense skin, stuck it in the root of the sdcard, renamed to update.zip like instructions said, turned the phone off and rebooted in recovery, installed the update from the sdcard, rebooted, and now is stuck in a boot loop.
I get the sprint animation, the hero logo with the little android guy, and the HTC splash screen, and then just goes back and does it again.... forever. I have not loaded any other ROM or done anything else with the phone, just rooted the phone, dl'd the theme. Now I have heard about loading a different ROM on the phone, but is this required for the Themes to work? If it is, how would I be able to tell which ROM's are compatible with my phone? Sorry guys, I'm new to this, just trying to pick up info as I go.
Most all of the other threads I have found are directed to other phone users who have installed a Hero ROM on a Tmobile G1 or something like that. I haven't been able to find anything specific for my device, so I'd appreciate any help you all can give. I'm sure its a pretty simple fix, any help?
I had the boot-looping problem on my rooted T-Mobile G2 Hero, and I fixed it by wiping everything from the recovery menu. I dunno if this will help you, since I'm not sure what the differences between Sprint, HTC and T-Mobile's version are, but it might be a good start. :S
thanks
thanks for the quick reply. As usual, I found a boatload of info right after I posted the original thread. I think what I needed to do was to download find and download a rom that is compatible with my version of Hero and android, then find a theme that I like, and then try to update with the theme.
That's about as far as I've got, I'm poring over every bit of info I can find, but its confusing as hell, and poor grammar makes it even harder to understand.

If you did a nandroid backup? boot into recovery and restore the backup, that should reset everything unless you flashed the skin and then did the backup? in that case download a rom for the cdma hero (guessing thats what you have?) rename it update.zip and put it onto your sdcard, boot into recovery and wipe EVERYTHING!, then flash your update.zip. only install themes for specific roms.
yea, had no problem with making the nandroid backup, and after the boot-loop, I pulled the battery and then booted in recovery to restore. No problems there.
I guess I just didn't get enough info before I started messing with the device. Thanks for the help tho.

[Q] I think i messed up =[

ok, well, i was in the process of rooting my hero, for the first time, and hit some problems, i read that for mine i had to create a gold card, i did everything as was said in the tutorials, and when everything was done, i tried a rooted application, and my phone wasn't rooted? so... then i just wanted to go back to the Android 2.1 i was using before through OTA update, and... it will download it, and go to install it, and on reboot, it gets stuck on the HTC screen.. i left it there all night figuring it was just going slow, and nothing.. any word on what i can do..? =[

Can you explain what you did, which guide you used, and which custom ROM you flashed?
that one with another one on how to create the gold card, i fianlly got Android 2.1 back on it thru the OTA update, all i had to do was flash the rom, but i really wanted to root it for the style of the custom roms, and i now use the 2.1 with pandahome, and am also wondering if there would be a way to change the style of the notification bar at the top with these..? sorry, i am a total noob when it comes to Android =[

Ok, now you are running 2.1, go into the hero dev forum, and click the sticky about rooting 2.1. That will guide you through installing a custom rom, using what is, in my experience, a much easier method for folk new to it.
Basically, do exactly as it says, and you'll end up on the blue care bear.
Now flash a zip file with custom rom
Remember to nandroid before flashing (all explained in the guide)
thank youu ^_^ will read it thoroughly before attempting it, lol, but until then, do you have a personal preference to which home replacement app to use? i'm currently using pandahome, but am having trouble location a nice variety of apps.. and do you have to root before you can change the boot screen?

Hmmm. I recommend Launcher Pro. I think that's what you're talking about.
To change the HTC Quietly Brilliant, you need root, then change the /system/media/bootscreen.zip file.
If you flash a custom ROM, you will likely get instructions for this.
i cannot thank enough. =] i'm sorry for the newb questions, i'm just extremely new to the Android in general =/ and will read as much as i can before attempting to root and flash. and will hopefully be able to help someone else in my situation one day! (^_^*)b
thank you soooo much dude? and is there a way a way to chance the to notification a really really wany one,
*Edit* and i think that was the ond i used, it said i hade to make a Gold Card for it, possible ls there wa wat to do i without it, and do you have a start wifger, and also point me to the sticky, thank you very much
okay, sorry for all the question, but it this the one to follow:

Follow the newbie guide in my sig - it should talk you through the entire process.
i got some probs in my other post if you wouldn't mind to help =[[[[[
O you-re on v2.1 of android. Follow this guide:
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
In response to your other questions:
1. LauncherPro (as advised by pulsar) is a brilliant launcher. My personal favourite.
2. On a custom rom you can change the bootscreen - see the theme section here or over at VillainROM for more bootscreens.
3. Yes you can theme the notification bar. You'll have to edit some files yourself or find someone who has done what you want. There are guide here on XDA in the theme section and you could also google it for more details.
4. Nandroid is a method of backing up your current phone's state. However, if you're going down the custom rom and root section then nandroiding before doing the process isn't strictly necessary. It is, however, still recommended and if the guide covers it I would do it!
Just as a point - I would NOT recommend following the Droid Eris guide you linked to before as this is not intended for use on your phone, or the one in my sig as that is for v1.5 of android. Use the one I have linked to above in this post.

Do I really have to change my SD Card?

[Q] Did I brick my new Transformer Prime?

So, after owning my Transformer Prime for about a month now, I decided to take the plunge and root it. I followed the instructions for ViperMod and had it rooted in no time. I then followed the instructions of unlocking the bootloader and finally installing OTA Rootkeeper.
I've had rooted devices in the past (Droid Incredible) and am familiar with RomManager. So I installed RomManager on the Transformer Prime. I then attempted to create a backup of my "current Rom", which is just stock ICS. RomManager prompted me to update Clockworkmod Recovery, which I did (I now have 5.8.2.0 installed). It then rebooted...acting like it was backing up my current Rom, but when I got back into RM, and clicked "Manage Backups" and there was nothing there. I tried once more with the same result, and ultimately gave up on backing up my current config.
I then downloaded Cyanogenmod 9 (nightly). I selected Google Apps and it proceeded to download. I got an error that the Google Apps portion had an error, but it seemed to work when I attempted to download it again.
I then proceeded to attempt to install the new Rom. The menu came up, asking if I wanted to wipe data and cache, wipe dalvik and backup current rom. I selected all three and hit ok.
My tablet rebooted...quickly, and did not show any signs of installing Cyanogenmod. Sure enough, I got my stock ICS...no Cyanogenmod. I tried again...same thing. I tried a third time, and RomManager hung when I tried to select Ok after the options of backing up, etc. Ultimately I got the error popup, asking if i wanted to wait/report/ok. I hit ok.
I then...very stupidly in retrospect...performed a factory reset from within the phone's settings menu (something I've later read is a big no no). This time, when my phone rebooted, it went straight into Clockworkmod Recovery, which is where I am now. Stuck. I've read a ton and tried everything but had no success.
Strangely, I can find the cyanogenmod file by navigating through "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard", then "clockworkmod", then "download", then "get.cm", then "get" and finally "update-cm-9-20120301-NIGHTLY-tf201-signed.zip". And it allows me to update using this file...even giving me the message "Install from sdcard complete"...but nothing happens. I'm still stuck in Clockworkmod.
If anyone has any advice, I'm begging for your help. Really hoping I didn't ruin my brand new tablet...
Thanks.
only thing rom manager is gold for on the prime at the moment is getting the latest CWM version. other than that, trying to flash a rom, reboot into recovery, or backup doesn't work in rom manager for prime. everything needs to be done through CWM itself. whether flashing a rom or making a nandroid backup. so you have to manually go into CWM and try flashing from there. did you make sure the roms were stored on internal memory to flash(I believe it can only be done on prime this way at the moment)? try a different rom as the CM9 has alot of bugs n issues at the moment. try flashing virtuous rom or a stock modified rom from developement.
also check out developement section for a thread called the Di's n Donts of unlocking and thread called how to or not unbrick your prime. answers you seek are in there.
See my unbricking thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514088
Thanks so much for your help guys!
to demandarin: Unfortunately the only ROM I downloaded before everything went haywire was the nightly cyanogenmod 9 from yesterday. And as I explained, that ROM doesn't seem to be flashing for me... I've tried downloading other ROMs onto my SD card, but I can't seem to get my Prime to recognize the SD card in CWM, and I can't figure out any way to get ROMs onto my prime...now that its stuck in recovery. Do you know if I can load ROMs onto my Prime at this point?
to Diamondback: I read your unbricking thread and its given me some hope. It sounds like I'm falling into the "1a" category. I'll have to bunker down tonight and see if I can work through those instructions (I have no familiarity with ADB at this point, which is my main concern). Anyway, I very much appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.
I am curious though, is there some place I can look for clarification on what works in RomManager and what does not? None of that was made clear in the app itself, so I just assumed it was fully functional, like it was on my Dinc. Now I'm paying the price...
Thanks again.

Thanks, but I actually do have the latest version of CWM (5.8.2.0), according to the link you provided. The thing is, I'm just very unfamiliar with CWM, or really any recovery software. The link you posted notes the following improvements:
-Possibly fixes bricks (by properly restoring boot.img)
-Correctly comes with Staging/System unmounted
-Nandroid Restores properly the boot.img (of backups created with this CWM). This means no more issues when restoring a Rom if you are coming from another from (for example, if you are restoring Virtuous after wiping cm9)
Which all sounds great, but I have no idea how to really use any of that... Does "possibly fixes bricks" apply to my situation? I've tried selecting restore and advanced restore through CWM, but in both situations it says "cannot find files", which I'm assuming are the "boot.img" being referenced. So again, it seems like I'm hosed...
I'm just really hoping that Diamondback's unbricking method works for me. Though, I'm having a hell of a time finding instructions on how to setup ADB on my PC (Windows 7). Do you know where I can find good and current instructions?
you can Google it but plenty of YouTube view on how to set up adb.
there's a thread here on it though. take a look: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427008

[Q] some assistance needed. please help

So I hate to be the frantic guy screaming for help cuz im normally pretty savvy at all this types of stuffs. But........
ZOMG [email protected]#[email protected]@[email protected][email protected]%!!
Im stuck pretty hardcore here. Allow me to give you the run down:
Was on Clean Rom Dev Edition. the newest version. ICS and the lot. But I wanted to try something different. Devil toast. When I tried to install the CM9 rom I got bootloops. I did some reading and found out this could be because I was S-on with hboot 1.50. So I found the JBEAR method for achieving s-off. It said I had to go back to stock so i tried to install a stock rom. didnt work. bootloops non stop. I tried a few different versions. odex, deodex blah blah blah. non of them worked. i only got bootloops. So I decided I would try and reinstall the Clean rom. That worked. I was able to reinstall it. I still wanted to try and get back to stock so I Got the RUU EXE and gave that a try. I only got errors and was unsuccessful at the RUU. So i figured what the heck I will try and do this with the rom i am already on. (since it says that it can work with some custum roms) gave it a try and got the still sober error a few times. I have tried about 5-6 times now with no luck. the phone wont boot into the rom. only the bootloader/fastboot. when i try to load CWM it wont mount my sd card so i can try installing a rom. if i try and power on the phone normally it just goes to a black screen with the word "juopunutbear" hanging above a phone. What should my next step be XDA friends? what can I do to get myself out of this situation. and wind up with soff and some devil toast!?

Boot your phone into fastboot. Plug it into the computer. Open up your command prompt and change your directory to whatever folder you created when you unlocked your bootloader. Then type fastboot oem lock. After doing this, you should be able to install your stock ROM either form your phone or via RUU on the computer. Let me know if you have any problems.
So heres the Update:
I finally got the phone jbeared. and installed jbear hboot. flashed devil toast and got no service or wifi. everytime i tried to connect to wifi the phone would reboot. did as mush reading and digging as i could to find out if anyone had the same prob. couldnt find anything. and wanted to go to bed for the night. so i just flashed back to clean rom dev edition because i had no problems with it before. but now I cant send or recive text messages. my data works fine. but no SMS at all. i get sms errors everytime i try to send one. i used one of my friends phones to send myself a text and i didnt receive it. what do you think the issue is?

try changing active profile from 0 to 1 in data profile to get data working again....
if data starts working , try updating prl and update profile too.
Is there a way to IM you?
Also, none of that worked. data is still gone. no activation. I just tried reflashing the rom. didnt work.

try making a call and you will be redirected to sprint for activation. if that doesn't work, try restoring data profile once again and then make a call
no luck. "error #16 switch 531" is what it says after ringing once. then hangs up. doesnt redirect me. tried up the same thing multipule times. no luck.
can you contact sprint from another phone? tell them about your activation issue.....don't tell them you s-offed your device .
Yea. I will call them tomorrow when I get off of work. Any advice on that I should say to them. like what caused the malfunction, ect...?

[Q] TWRP can't find any zip files I put onto phone!

A few weird things are happening on my phone and I'm quite concerned (even though it's actually working perfectly fine, which is the weirdest part of all!)
A little background: I recently wiped my phone and flashed the Sense 5 Android 4.3, stock rom. Now I'm trying to flash Viper 4.0.
First of all, as the title suggests, whenever I put a zip file on my phone it doesn't show in the TWRP recovery. I downloaded the correct one on the site (the newest one for the HTC EVO 4G LTE) so I don't think that's the problem. Also, I tried to push the file Viper zip onto my phone using this program called WinDroid Toolkit, and it claims it did but when I go into TWRP I cannot see the zip file at all, and if I try to use other folder names (such as the 'boot' folder I saw when I was in TWRP recovery) it says those folders don't exist!
Second of all, TWRP claims there is no OS installed on my phone but when I reboot my phone, it's fine! It just goes to the home screen as usual and it works perfectly fine... so I don't understand this warning but I couldn't shake the feeling that this was relevant to my issue.
I've been combing the forums looking for this type of problem, and I've tried multiple things but to no avail. I've read snippets about partition problems after formatting some phones but I'm not sure because there doesn't seem to be much information about it (at least from what I could find).

Try using the TWRP found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639180
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
download this twrp http://d-h.st/7Cr
name it properly and fastboot flash it. after that mount your device to you pc and transfer a rom zip to storage.
Okay, well I flashed that TWRP and now I'm stuck at the white HTC screen. I can't even get into the bootloader, it just continually boots to the white HTC screen. Thoughts?

RUU or ViperRUU. TBH it sounds like the behavior of a dirty flash. ViperRUU is especially helpful in these situations.
Once done, use the TWRP recommended by Evolution_Freak. There were some major changes to the partitioning in the last few releases, make sure your recovery is appropriate for your ROM.

Ok it's not stuck anymore, I can get into recovery and bootloader, so I'm not in a panic anymore at least However, my computer is not detecting my phone, nor is VipeRUU. If I try to mount to the computer via TWRP, nothing comes up. BTW my recovery is 2.7.8.0b now. Still no OS, still gets stuck on the HTC screen until I boot to recovery or bootloader
Edit: Now the computer tries to install drivers for my phone whenever I plug it in. It pops up as HTC MTP Device, always fails to install, then has a warning in the device manager. So I uninstalled the drivers, uninstalled HTC Sync, reinstalled HTC Sync. Didn't help. This is beyond frustrating...
Edit 2: After scouring the internet someone said to lock the bootloader and that'll allow my PC to see my phone. Well, now i have a RELOCKED (that's what it says on top) bootloader and I'm no closer to the solution methinks. I'm ready to just throw this phone out the window.
Edit 3: I actually discovered ViperRUU has a way to bypass the initial screen so I can use it in bootloader. Great, except now it's stuck on "Flashing..." and has been for half an hour. I really might throw this phone out the window.
5th and final edit: VipeRUU just would not work at all, so I had to go back to an older stock RUU, which sucks but at least my phone is working now Thanks for your help guys!
