Trying to root - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to root my HTC Hero(Orange uk) but i keep running into a problem, im trying to copy the new recovery ROM to the phone but it keeps telling me that remote access isnt allowed. Also i can't use the flash rec method.
I previously had a rooted and custom ROM on here but removed it as some things didnt work then upgraded to the latest official HTC ROM (2.73.xx) and now i can't mdoify the recovery image.
sorry if i have been a bit vauge with my message but does anyone know how to overcome these problems?
Cheers
John

if you flashed the latest RUU update you need to create a goldcard and downgrade. using RUUs is generally the last option if you can't get your phone to work, because if you install the latest version you don't have any security holes that you could use. luckily there is the goldcard method, although it is a PITA (never did it, just read about it...)

not sure how this worked but i reinstalled the latest RUU and then installed flash rec and it worked

would be interesting to know what you did (with version numbers), so that question would be answered...
not gonna try though, don't want to get stuck with a generic rom

[Q] Update hero only using SD card?

I'm on orange uk, trying to sort the phone out with the 2.1 update. In theory this is all via OTA updates, but it turns out that you can't get the second half of the update unless the phone was on a certain rom version before receiving any OTA's...
basically I need to replace the current rom with the official one offered by HTC on their website, which will then be able to successfully update OTA.
HOWEVER. My hero is completely failing to connect to a pc these days, so I can't use the rom update utility. I can put the SD card in a reader and transfer files that way. Is there any way to update the rom on the phone like this?
Not rooted, I've not tampered with it at all yet.
Thanks!
There is no way of taking the one off the HTC site and loading it from your SD (it runs on the PC...)
If you look on the dev forum there are loads of update zips that are the official ROM only converted to an .zip (and normally with Root permissions added) and the radio stripped out. That should still work I think.
okay, why would I want the radio stripped out though?
And how do i update the phone using the zip? Some boot option?
thanks for the help

post 20 at the bottom of the page- is that the .zip im after?
cant post a link cos im new, gah!
2.73.61.66 was the last orange branded 1.5 update which enables FOTA. basically its what youre looking for.
flash to that rom, and the update should become available to you as soon as you connect to wifi.
you update the phone by a .zip by installing a custom recovery.
looks like youve got reading up to do.
okay, i got amon ra on the phone, flashed to the official 2.73.61.66, got the prompt for OTA update....
and when it rebooted to install it, i went into amon ra recovery, which seems to block it, so I can't continue.
Should I remove the recovery image and replace it with stock, then hope that OTA's work as they're supposed to? How do I do this (ive found a guide but its for a different phone and required usb connection to pc, which is broken on my hero)
OR, can I flash the stock 2.1 update directly instead?
thanks

If you're wanting to get back to stock, you need to get the stock recovery on. But ideally, you need to flash the RUU (with USB)
I've got the stock 2.1 update on it at the moment, since nothing else would go. Still get low signal compared to other phones, some bits are bizarrely slow (people app sometimes takes 20 seconds to load, other times 1 second, both straight from boot). Hum. Still there are a LOT of improvements in 2.1 which are welcome!
thanks for the assistance guys

[Q] RUU 2.3.4...Can I Root and install custom ROMs?

Hey everyone, I am new to the rooting world however I have only experienced good things. I decided to root my thunderbolt using TB Autoroot+htc sync last night(had the original stock froyo, was going to installed cyanogen mod 7) and was successful. Unfortunately, I then installed the leaked 2.3.4 RUU GB which rerooted my TB before I installed the cm7(wanted to try the RUU out, bad idea lol). I was wondering if all or any of these are possible (dont care about losing data, just don't want to brick, ie avoiding command lines if possible):
1. root the phone while maintaining the leaked 2.3.4 RUU, just as was done for FROYO? Original reason for rooting was to remove the bloatware apps, but not having custom roms would be ok at this point if that is this is the only option. I know there is the revolution method to root, however will that work on the leaked 2.3.4 RUU?
2. root the tb with my current 2.3.4 RUU and install the BAMF 2.3.4/sense 3.0 GB build, or some other custom 2.3.4 rom?
A tutorial or walk through would be great! I know there are some out there, however I am looking for one specifically for those that have the leaked 2.3.4 RUU on the thunderbolt.
Also, can someone explain the difference in features of the GB builds that have been out for some time(customs) vs the RUU by verizon? I'm not talking about the physical aspects or the apps that come with, but more in terms of installing/switching between them. I know I need to root in order to install the custom roms, but assuming i can root the 2.3.4 RUU, will I be able to install any other 2.3.4 rom such as BAMF or cyanogen without problems? I have heard that you just arent allowed to go backwards, ie back to Froyo one you update to GB, but I should be able to install any 2.3.4 GB ROM once rooted via the bootloader(power+volume down) True?
Any help would be great! Thanks!
Yes you can. Just use revolutionary to root the new GB build. Here is a video tutorial for you.
Well, here comes your first less than pleasant reply...
Pretty much everything you wanted to know is posted in my thread stickied in the Q&A section. That's also where this post is going to end up. Please check my thread on basic noob questions, search before posting, and post in the correct forum.

If you are rooted, just use a program like root explorer to search for a file called otacerts.zip and rename it to otacerts.bak
When you open root explorer, make sure to put it into write mode. look at the top left side of the program and press on the mount r/w option

If you used your phone to download a rom, its in the "download" folder, move it to the root of sd card

Root Error
I am trying to Root my Thunderbolt but keep getting the following error:
Failed to get Root!
I am using revolutionary.
I have installed, made sure their was a connection, and then removed HTC Sync.
I downloaded and installed Android USB Drivers.
I selected USB Debugging
Thunderbolt Info:
HBOOT 1.04.000
Android 2.3.4
ROM Ver 2.11.605.9
What am I missing and where can I get it? Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks in advance...
I've never rooted but I believe you need to downgrade. Revolutionary does not work with the latest OTA. There are several posts around that explain how to downgrade to the previous OTA (link below). Then you should be able to use the revolutionary method.

Yes you need to downgrade to 2.11.605.5 then use reveloutionary

[Q] Can I update without unrooting?

Hey, I'm rooted and s-off, running (firmware, I think) 2.06.605.1 710RD. I've been ignoring the software update Verizon sent out a while ago by pressing the home button on my phone whenever the update popup appears, but I'd like to make it go away for good, and the best way to do that is to update.
The thing is, I'd like to do it without the hassle of unrooting and going back to s-on (if I even need to do that) to update, then getting s-off and root again. I heard it's possible if you flash a pre-rooted ROM of the update through a custom recovery, and I found a pre-rooted, updated rom a while ago on the forum, but now I can't find it. The update is called HTC6435LVW_2.07.605.1-2.06.605.1.
First of all, will this work?
Secondly, I'm going to keep searching for the 2.07 rom, but can anyone let me know if they have a link to the thread?
Thanks for your help.
Edit 2: To all who saw my first edit, I have confirmed that this is the TTY update, not the 4.2.2 update. However, I think the 4.2.2 update will be available after I flash the 2.07 update, so please let me know if flashing a pre-rooted rom still works for entire OS updates (and if there even is a pre-rooted rom for 4.2.2 yet).
Edit 3: Wow, I should have finished reading xda's article on the subject before I edited last time. Apparently there's already a pre-rooted rom for the 4.2.2 update, so that won't be a problem. Ok, that should be all.

[Q] How to Update to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop on a Rooted HTC One (M8)?

UPDATE: MY PROBLEM WAS SOLVED AND THE ROM WAS FLASHED SUCCESSFULLY. Full details in a follow-up comment further down.
I want to update my rooted AT&T HTC One (M8) running Android 4.4.4 and the Google Play Edition ROM + TWRP Recovery to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop. How would I do this without losing root from the OTA update and with TWRP Recovery?
I would just wait until a flashable ROM is posted, similar to what you have now (but older GPE version).
The OTA just started rolling out like yesterday, didn't it?
Or you can flash the "leaked" early Lollipop build, which is already posted as a flashable ROM.
You cannot flash an ota with twrp installed, and in order to accept an ota you need to be completely [email protected],may be able to save root.
I had the same exact setup as you and manually updated mine yesterday (after replacing cwm recovery with stock). Unfortunately I lost root. Currently looking for a way to get it back and still receive future ota updates.
Are you guys S-On or S-Off ?
I'm running SkyDragon GPE 4.4.4, but I cannot S-off ... Sunshine says I need to revert to stock in order to get S-0ff, and everything I've read says I need S-off to get back to stock.
Post Update
UPDATE: I've pushed an Android 5.0.1 GPE ROM to my phone using this ROM. It was posted by the same person who created the original Android 4.4.4 GPE ROM XDA Developers post, so I trust them. It's currently working like a dream.
I used ADB to flash this ROM to my phone. Be aware that, if flashed, this ROM WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE INCLUDING YOUR MICRO SD CARD AND YOUR CUSTOM RECOVERY, so make a backup on a micro SD card using TWRP, CWM, Philz Touch Recovery, or whichever recovery you'd like and eject your micro SD card before flashing the ROM. You can simply reinstall the recovery if the ROM fails for some reason, reinsert the micro SD card, and restore to your previous ROM. The 5.0.1 ROM's forum post should provide more than enough information for the installation process, but if you don't have enough knowledge to do that on your own yet (or you don't currently have root access, S-Off, etc.), you can follow this tutorial almost exactly, simply replacing the files he says to download and flash to your phone with the ones from the forum post linked earlier.
Hope this helps someone!
Well, that wasn't what you originally asked for (how to update by OTA without losing root), but ok.
Also, the thread you linked states the RUU deletes the internal ("virtual") SD, not the removable ("external") one. But its not a bad idea to save backup info in the way you suggest (or copy to computer) "just in case".

Somehow I broke the update system ANE-LX1

I was trying to install a custom rom and was not aware that you can only unlock the bootloader by paying, which is fine but I can't afford it at the moment but by then I downgraded my rom.
I returned to version 9 on my phone OS and was hoping to get updates afterwards through official updates as I was restoring back to stock but I made a mistake and downloaded and installed ANE-LGRP2-OVS 9.1.0.200 which was not the correct one.
I have tried a few roms, copied to SD card in the dload folder but no matter what I try it keeps failing. No matter what I try downgrades and upgrades won't work anymore.
It seems similar to this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/downgrade-ane-lx3-ane-lgrp2-ovs-pie-to-oreo.3944399/
Everything does seem to work fine on my phone except the update system and google pay is not happy and not enabling contactless (which I use all the time)
Is there anything I can do to fix my dumbness
How does the dload method fail? Or is it successful in installing a different firmware yet the official update service is still broken?
Have you tried the forced dload method and did a factory reset/wipe data immediately after installation in recovery?

for several reasons .
In this specific case it is due to installing the wrong FW (ANE-LGRP2-OVS ). With this build number it is impossible to install another full stock FW or update system via OTA.
I totally forget to mention on here that I solved it. I managed to get hold of a version 8 stock rom and installed it to the SD card, then it was happy to update itself from there all the way up to current version.
I don't know why it worked at that point as I'm pretty sure I tried that same thing several times before but sometimes there are things I cannot explain, it just randomly worked all of a sudden
