NooB Guide to install app2sd on stock ROM - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my HTC Hero a few days back. It was a Malaysian set without the Android market. I got fed up with the crappy apps installer it came with so I followed one of the tutorials in the forum and had it rooted (i think) and upgraded to the international version.
Old version
Build: 2.73.728.5 146733 CL#61267 release-keys
New Version
Build: 2.73.405.5 146733 CL#61267 release-keys
I got the android market and I'm loving it. I loved it so much that I ran out of memory and sorta crashed the phone. I did a factory reset and re-flash the firmware. Then I found out about apps2sd. I've been digging into the forum on guides to set it up but none of them actually worked.
Can some gurus on this here forum please write a short guide on how to manually install apps2sd?
My current setup:
Phone just rebooted clean after a wipe. The ROM is the international stock ROM. The recovery image I've installed is the AMON-RA version. My SD card has been formatted using the AMON RA Recovery console, so by right it should have all the necessary partitions. The radio is still stock as I have never updated it to anything else (didn't have enough information to realize the full implications of updating the radio, so I put that on hold for the time being)
What do I do next? I have installed terminal emulator though as I gather from the forums that it's a must.
I'm begging all gurus out there to please shine some light on this dark crater I'm in.

why not just stop using crappy stock roms and flash the latest modaco? its a lot faster, has more featues and app2sd is build in. do a nandroid backup for safety, and use a backup tool of your choice (i bought my backup pro, its not cheap, but i dont like the free ones, they have never worked well for me) for your contacts etc.
Its realy easy, a lot easyer than trying to get apps2sd runnig right on a stock rom (I dont know if that is even possible)

Ouch~ Really that crappy huh......
As per your suggestion, I flashed my ROM to 3.1-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed.... either I messed up or it's actually a feature with the rom.... but my social networking apps just won't work after that. It's just a bit too advance for me at this juncture.
So I'm back to the updated official ROM again....
Any takers on the guide to manually installing apps2sd???

Is all hope lost?? I was hoping that someone would have had the experience of installing apps2sd from scratch.
Custom roms are good and all but blind reliance on them don't sit too well with me. The custom roms are in every aspect PERFECT but what I am trying to achieve is a better understanding of how the thing works. What better way than to put a hold on the shortcuts and doing it the manual way.....

Im looking for the same thing man... just want to add the app2sd to the stock htc hero cmda rom after rooting...
Anyone???

Unlikely, the only people capable of producing these guide are the type of people who DO install custom roms. If you're that fussed you'll work it out yourself and produce the guide yourself.
Its 100 times easier to just get a custom rom installed.

Any recommendations on Custom Roms?

Hey everyone.
I recently rooted my Hero GSM phone and tried to play around with some Custom Roms.. I'm currently running FroydVillain with a 691 kernel and I like it a lot, but want to know if there's any other Roms running smoother on the Hero packing Froyo..
I used to have the official eclair (2.1) with launcherpro installed, but wanted to try Froyo out because I heard that it runs 450 % faster than eclair. And since I went over to Custom Roms my batterytime has been lowered significantly..
Also if anyone could tell me what RADIO's are I would be very happy
Sorry for all the questions, but I have just one more..does updating the recovery software help on performance? I have an old version I think.. can anyone please link the newest?
I find the market of available Roms so large and wanted to know if anyone could recommend some Roms and include some links on where to get..
Froyo prefered since I just got used to how it works.
Thanks in advance

Latest Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
The radio I recommend is the latest GSM one at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?307-radio-roms-download-links
Are you using latest Froyd, as we've got reports of 2 full days of battery life.
But 450% is an exaggeration, as it's based on a nexus 1 without vs. with JIT. You should get > 5 Mflops though in linpack using froyo.
Regarding the question in the title. You could search around here a little on Q&A since it has been asked a lot of times But mostly you'll get the answer that it's different from person to person and everyone has their favourite ROM for instance my favourite ROM is Cronos (anything) but I'm guessing pulser_g2's would be VillainROM (LOL)
Lol. Yeah it depends on what you want. I mentioned Froyd as you're on it already, but sense 2.1 roms do still exist, though you might try disappointed with performance.
I used a sense rom recently and had to remove it as I couldn't bear the slowness, even with oc.
But yeah, search is your friend. Decide what you want, and you'll find it here.
Thanks for the links.
Yeah well, I spent almost an hour reading about different Roms here and there and I see that it's kinda up to one self what you like about the different Roms. I've been very happy with FroydVillain so far, but I guess I should go ahead and give some of the others a try.
I've just backed up my current phone settings with "Titanium Backup" but is this enough if I decide to try a new Rom and want to go back later on? or should I do a nandroid backup?
And again when I flash over the new recovery.img.. Do I need to backup anything beforehand?
My Froyd version is the latest and I've kept on updating whenever I saw new updates. And yeah, two days is in my opinion not much. Beforehand, on the official 2.1, I could easely tweak 4-5 days out of my standard Hero battery, but I guess this has something to do with the kernel?
Sorry.. I'm really a newbie on this

If you want to go back you need a nandroid backup yes. If your talking about updating your recovery image (lol I'm guessing) no you don't. Just flash it. And the battery has something (everything ) to do with the kernel but if you want better battery set you min freq of your CPU lower or you can lower the max freq.
I see..
Thank you very much for answering.
I have just one minor problem..
How the heck do I flash over the recovery image? Don't I use the FlashRec-thingy? Might have deleted it at some point :S

I reccomend you flashing Amon-RA. There is a guide in his thread on how to flash it But if you want the ultimate easy noob thing you can download ROM manager from the market which will alow you to download and flash a pretty descent recovery in one click
Yeah.. Flashing Amon-RA is what I'm trying to. It seems I have the 1.5.2 version installed and I just downloaded the 1.7.0 one..
The first time I flashed "Amon-RA" did it with the help of a program called FlashRec. I followed the guide on theunlockr.com and I now end up with a message: "Backup FAILED: Could not run command." when I try to "Backup Recovery Image" through that FlashRec program.
I have an idea of how to work around this but I'm not 100% sure this is what's needed..?
Could I run the phone into recovery mode (through that 1.5.2 Amon-RA thingy) and then flash the never version right onto it or is this the wrong procedure?

Lol thats excatly how I rooted my phone too (same recovery and website even) Look in the thread it's described how you flash the new recovery via ADB
Yeah ehm... I'm kinda new to this so all his "code" or whatever it is doesn't give me a hell lot of clues..
Install
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most (I probably forgot a few).
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img

I fixed the steps underlined but after that I kinda went cold on what the **** to do :S
I boot into my recovery and what I get from his "guide" is that I my Hero should do something when I plug in the USB cable.. but nothing happends.. anyone who can put it down in baby-steps for me? :O
There's another way to do this it seems (2nd guide in his thread) but it seems to involve even more "code" so I guess I'll settle with this if it's possible.. :S

For you I would just recommend installing "ROM manager" from the market and then let it install ClockworkMod recovery that should do for you
EDIT: There seems to be an issue with ROM manager at the moment. It wont flash...
Yeah.. Might as well try this out since no one wants to point out on how to it the "geeky"-way
EDIT:
I seem to get an error when trying to flash the ClorkworkMod Recovery.. Any idea why?
Nvm.. Some dude (erasmux) has made an update.zip and uploaded to the Amon-RA post.. it did the trick

[Q] kernel/rom update question

hey
so i bought an optimus one this week and have already noticed the touch lag and stuff.
was always gonna root it, and have done jailbreaking on ipt/iphones but i know nothing about the android equivalent apart from what i have googled since then.
have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247 and a lot of other stuff and i thought i got it, but obviously i didnt.
basically, phone was on 2.2.2 so i downgraded to 10a 2.2 so i could root. ran z4root, installed custom recovery and then flashed milk_os's fixed kernel onto it.
kept showing "android.process.acore has stopped working" errors on screen, and i thought i could just upgrade back to 2.2.2 without breaking the kernel.
couldn't find a download of the latest firmware (but have since then) so i used pc suite 4 to update.
phone is back in 2.2.2 but root is gone and kernel is back how it was before.
tl;dr what i want to know is the difference between a rom and a kernel, and if it is possible to update the OS without changing the kernel, or root on 2.2 and then update to 2.2.2 without removing root so i can then install the milk_os kernel.
i have a copy of the latest update 2.2.2 from my provider which i can install with recovery if it will stop it overwriting kernel and/or removing root.
alternatively, cm7 is a 2.3.3 rom, is it worth just downgrading, rooting and flashing that? i assume that wont break my root
sorry for noobness, i just want to play angry birds without lag and im a compulsive fiddler/breaker.
PS also, if i go to 2.3 gingerbread am i correct in thinking my class2 microsd card will not work anymore on account of app2sd or whatever?
can someone please just tell me the best option for me, i have tried to google and read myself to find an answer but new to the scene and some things seem to be taken as understood and i don't get them at all.
thanks

a. kernal =/= rom
kernel is something that works beneth the operating system.. its like this
YOU -> Interface -> Operating System (ROM/Android/Linux/JVM) -> Kernel -> Hardware
and back.
I also assume LG's updater flashes both the rom and the kernel. so in simple terms, use Custom Rom to flash a new rom (void/CM7/etc) and use it. There is no trick way of the stuff ur explaining to happen.
b. Android 2.2.2 doesn't do jack ****. downgrade to 2.2 then upgrade to CM7 or whatever. class 2 sd cards SHOULD have a random unmount error. i think void might have fixed it; check plz. flashing cm7 should fix everything u explained, but don't expect much from the ROM; its in dev. FYI touchscreen fix is included in cm7
c. custom roms, including cm7 has root built in.
d. conclusion
i. use cm7 route -> flash custom recovery -> flash CM7 (tricky, be careful) -> touchscreen profit!
ii. use froyo rom route -> flash custom recovery -> flash rom of ur choice (void, megatron) -> flash touchscreen kernel -> reboot -> profit
e. press thanks if ur thankful. i would like some thanks lulz
cheers
There is a Kernel you can flash that helps fix the bug
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929941
thanks!!!
awesome, thanks heaps for that.
just one more thing, i assume the custom roms like cm7 and megatron/void all have root built in? or does the custom recovery do something to stop the root being removed when you reflash
once you root the phone, no matter what custom rom you use, it will still be "un-rooted".
Only when you use the kdz updater to put back original firmware, phone is no longer rooted.
thanks
awesome, thanks for that

[Q] (Wind) HTC Amaze Wondering How to revert to stock ICS

Hello, recently I haven't been satisfied with Cyanogenmod 10.1. It's not that the ROM is a bad ROM it's just that I want a stable experience with my Amaze. So yesterday I tried using the Wind RUU which is only available in a .exe format from what I've seen. Trust me I've been looking heavily for a .zip format but just can't seem to find it. When ever I try to use the .exe it tells me my hboot version is to high so, it makes me think it's only meant for users going from Gingerbread to IceCream Sandwhich. I used to have a back-up of the Stock ROM from Wind but, during a recent issue with my partitioning table on my phone and a failed hard-drive which kept a backup of the backup. I lost the backup (I've had some pretty bad luck haven't I). I'm currently on Speedrom 8 as it seems to be the most stable ROM I can be on at the moment but, I do wish to revert myself to stock without going S-Off, as if I mess up with S-Off I'm without a phone for the next year or so.
If a thread already exists that can help me kindly point me in that direction (via a link would be helpful) or, if someone has a back-up if their Wind Mobile HTC Amaze (stock) that they are willing to send me in a dropbox that would be great. Thank you for your time and I'm sure someone will be able to help me.
Just a thought

But there are plenty of other good roms out there. i had a similar issue with a corrupted nandroid, which i didn't save to my pc (shame on me) but at the end of the day, the phone's not in warranty anyway and we've got devs like chevy still working on roms so why go back to stock? I guess if you freeze bloat and tweak your cpu settings, it would be ok, but I sure do like the customization and freedom of another rom. have you tried anything other than cyanogen? Funny, I've been messing with phones for years and never really liked cyanogen even though it seems to be the standard for custom roms. try viper and kaioken.

HTC Sensation Z710a Changing OS

Hi,
First of all, I have next to no knowledge of anything related to operating systems and my phone and so on, but I can follow instructions well if explained in simple terms. Thank you in advance.
I bought a HTC Sensation Z710a from Ebay and I didn't realize that it didn't have the "normal" Android on it. I've had it for a while now, over a year and I only recently revisited the subject of my OS when I realized I hadn't been asked to update anything like my previous phone (Nexus from Vodafone). I looked into it a little and it appears I have Android 4.0.3 but "Android Revolution HD 6.6.0 XE" by mike1986?
I would like to know what the best thing to do here is, as I would like to update to the newest available Android out for my phone, and I think I would prefer the "normal" Android to the mike1986 development version (but whatever works I suppose).
I have absolutely no idea how to go about this, so any help would be appreciated. Also, my battery seems to be dying a lot faster these days. Will getting a new one fix the problem entirely, and will updating the OS aid in this at all?
Thank you!
Any help!
Please, I really need assistance with this. Thank you!
I would suggest you to take a look in the section for your device for a custom rom which you think look's fine for you and also I'm quite sure that you have a CWM recovery and unlocked bootloader on your phone so that's not needed to be added.
Well, after that simply download the rom and put it on your sdcard and flash it with CWM, sometimes you might need to update the radio to get everything working. After you have flashed the zip you need to wipe data / factory reset, otherwise you might get a bootloop.
I also suggest you to make a nandroid backup before continuing to flash your device
Okay, thanks. Is it at all possible to get the regular version of Android on it though?

[Q] Got my Hands on a VIbrant. Now how do I replace its ROM?

Hello everyone.
As the title says I recently got my hands on a Samsung Vibrant. I have it from a friend who just left the apartment we lived in together for 5 months as she didn't need it anymore. It currently has a MIUI ROM on it and I'd like to change it to sada23's unofficial CM 11.0
The problem is however that my only previous experience with flashing ROM was with a Samsung Galaxy Chat when I slapped Jelly Bean on it which was only released in a few countries. So I went right ahead but found the amount of things I have to do overwhelming compared to when I just used ODIN on the old phone.
I'm trying to tell what the current status is of the phone and this is what I've been able to come up with so far. (also after googling what everything is and does lol)
- MIUI present so custom ROM install definitely possible
- When I booted into recovery mode I saw it has: "Semaphore CWM Recovery v6.0.1.9" (which I presume is outdated)
- BY default the MIUI ROM apparently has a superuser app (which lead me to think that the device is rooted), however everytime I try to use an app that requires root I encounter errors.
I just did a backup using the recovery mode with semaphore cause I saw this is usually a first step in all the guides I've read. However from here on out I am completely clueless on what to do because all the guides were so different from eachother and I have a feeling my phone is in a vague situation. (root/not rooted?)
So I was hoping someone here could point me into the right direction and help me get to CM from MIUI. Thank you in advance.
I'll be following this thread.. kinda in a similar situation. Although a bit worse. I had an old vibrant in a drawer from years back in mint condish!.. last thing I did was root and install recovery. Unfortunately I'm a stooge and without thinking threw a 4.4 rom zip on the phone.. booted to recovery and cleaned and tried to flash.. bottom line i'm in a bootloop now... and I gave up when odin wasn't detecting the phone.. I"ll figure that out eventually, but it would be great to just have a 4.4 Odin tar for a quick and painless install... or at least a tar from a 4.0 with root and recovery to make the 4.4 upgrade easy.
Also would be interested in knowing if the 4.4 roms work well.. Gps will be most important to me since I plan to use this as my jogging phone.
alrighty.. let's get this party started!
Edit - I think the best thing for you to do is odin back to stock then root install custom bootloader and then flash your new rom, I've heard that you can go straight to kk from stock but the guy who posted above me has problems because of that so I would try flashing an ICS ROM for the recovery first, and don't forget to make a nandroid backup
You can find all the files and programs you'll ever need here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982728 in NOOB_IN_NEED 'S ref thread
Hope I was of some help if I was hit the thanks button
