Hi everyone...
I want to ask if anyone managed to fix the Hero WiFi problem... If you haven't see all these threads in forums around the world about the same problem that we have on Hero, and the problem is that the Hero connects to the WiFi without any problems and starts working normally, but after few minutes it looks that its is connected, the WiFi indicator shows that the network is Excellent or good but when I try to open new pages, the browser says that the network has dropped or no access to the AP... I think this problem is well known here... so I was wondering if any one has managed to fix the problem, or is there any program, or update from HTC that I missed to fix this problem...

really I have tried everything that I have found in last 4 month on the internet, but noting... same problem!!!
and i see there is a lot of people that have the same problem. think that HTC have not fix this yet...

This appears to be linked to what router you are using. I have 3 different routers. 2 work fine 1 doesn't. The one that does not work is the newer most expensive Belkin MIMO router.
Some say that you should disable 11n and just use b and g, others say manually select channel. Not sure if either reliably works. Best way is to change the router. The one I am using at the moment is 7 years old, so you do not need hi-tech.
It's definitely not an N issue. I have 3 routers and have this problem with all of them. One is a WAP-11 running D-Link firmware, one is a WRT-54G running the most recent Tomato, and the other is one their early b/g routers running stock firmware. I've also tried the obvious tweaks with no improvement (different channels, different security settings, etc...). Also have the problem on both of our Heros. My wife's is still stock, mine is running the damagecontrol ROM (had the problem when it was stock, too).
I actually just got out of bed and sat down at my computer to research this exact issue. My wife and I both need data service for our jobs, and 3G coverage is lousy at our house no matter which carrier, so it's absolutely crucial that WiFi work well.
I've read bits and pieces on this forum and others that makes it sound like flashing a radio update could fix the problem. Is this accurate? It also sounds like people are having issues with bricking their phones after a radio update. Any truth there?
Google searches on the subject bring up mountains of irrelevant results to sift through, if anybody could save me a little time and point me in the right direction I'd be very, very appreciative.
(As someone who's worked in IT for over 20 years, I understand that there are always bugs and compatibility issues with technology. However, given that Linksys is the most popular brand of home router out there, I think it is inexcusable that the phone shipped with this issue. That Sprint and HTC have allowed it to go unremedied for this long is downright appalling. "Buy a new router" is NOT a solution that they should be able to get away with.)
Your problems may not be the same as the ones referred to by the OP. What are the symptoms? Can you connect at all to the routers?
The symptoms of the common problem that I was referring to is that you appear to be connected to the router but whenever you try to use the connection you get a connection error message despite your wireless settings appearing to show you are connected to the router. Are those your symptoms?
As I said I have two routers that work fine, one of which is an old D-Link DI524, the other being a newer Netgear WGR614. Both of those only have 11b & g and are running with original firmware. The one that does not work, the Belkin, has 11n, also running with original firmware.
For some flashing the original radio has worked. Others report that it makes no difference.
I have just noticed your reference to Sprint. In that case it may be better to start your own thread on the dedicated Hero CDMA forum, which deals with CDMA phones rather than the GSM phones that most of us have got. You could also try reading and asking here as well.

Pretty much exactly. WiFi will work for 10 minutes or so, then quit. Phone still says it's connected, excellent signal strength, and has valid IP configuration. Just won't pass any traffic.
I'm seriously considering flashing a newer radio version to see if it helps, but I've read accounts of bricked phones when people try to revert back to the original radio. I have to be able to get back to original because if I don't get WiFi working the phones will need to be returned since WiFi is not optional for us. (Sadly, I'll probably end up stuck with a Blackberry if we go that route, since WinMo is 100% out of the question.)
As an alternative solution, can anybody recommend a router that's currently available and known to work with the Hero? I would need it to support external antennas and be able to flash dd-wrt onto it.

I've read a few reports of bricking while flashing radios, but in all cases it's been due to the user. The actual flashing takes place on the first reboot after the update.zip is applied in recovery. At this point the phone displays a graphic of a box and a phone with an arrow indicating transfer from box to phone. Apparently some people have freaked at this point, as they thought the update was already done & hence something must be wrong. As a result they pull their battery
I've not come across bricking reports specifically in relation to reverting back to the original radio. Got any links?

I am not sure why you would need this. I also wonder whether flashing something different on to a router which works may stop it working. But then I may be showing the limits of my knowledge.
If it is any use to you I still use my Belkin router (it is both wired and wireless) for my usual wifi throughout most of the house and my office. The only thing I don't use it wirelessly for is the Hero (and an old printer with a LAN print sharer). I sat my old D-Link router on top of the Belkin and wired the two together using a LAN cable. So the wireless bit of the D-Link works for the Hero via the wired hub of the Belkin. I have exactly the same set up for the Netgear router, which serves another part of the house and is also wired in to the Belkin.
They both work fine piggy backed by wire on to the Belkin. The problem is only with the wireless bit of the Belkin, not the rest of it. So why not try a new router wired in to your existing one?
Both the two routers I have named work, but both are, I guess, no longer available new. Not sure if they were ever sold in the USA, given I am in the UK. But if they did why not try a used one on fleabay?
And I still think you would be better served posting on the specific Sprint forum. The Sprint version of this phone is a CDMA phone with different version of ROM than the GSM version which most of the rest of us use. The phones even look different!
Never had any problems with wifi on this phone.

Hero/router compatibility list
As so many differing reports of wi-fi connection issues are appearing, I have thrown together a quick-and-dirty summary of known routers/APs mentioned in this and similar threads. Put simply, "Good" work with the Hero using WPA2, "Bad" don't work at all, and "Ugly" work but with limitations.
I don't claim that this is in any way definitive or scientific, but it should help anyone looking for help with an inop wi-fi link. Got my GTablet on Saturday, this is my first day with it at work, and I was excited.
Except it turns out my GTablet doesn't see the wifi here. It sees two of them, but not the third one that I need access too. My iPhone sees and connects with it, no problem.
I attempted to manually set the SSID, but that just results in an unconnected network showing up in the network list.
Any thoughts? It's a G router running 2.4Ghz, thats all I know about it. I believe it's a 3Com.
My GTablet is running TnT Lite 4.40.
Is the network you're trying to connect to an adhoc network?

Asked around at work and none of the Tablet people had any ideas (all running iPads). None of the Droid users did either, since they are all on stock ROM phones. Since we're not technically supposed to use this network (why is it there?), I had to ask IT in a very hypothetical way. I'm pretty sure the tech knows why, but he responded 'hypothetically' and was cool about it.
We're running CISCO routers with PEAP enabled. Ooops. After doing a bit of research, doesn't look like TnT Lite handles that. So I'm going to have to try a new ROM. Thinking I may try one of the Vanilla builds.
Guess we'll find out tomorrow if I have to try a different one!
Ok, running Vanilla 2.3.3 AOSP now, it sees the network and connects with it, but none of the intranet sites work. However I can access the internet from it.

Last night I was looking for a video on youtube on my photon, and my wife was searching on our old laptop. Both were connected to our WiFi router, and we were sitting right next to each other. The laptop was MUCH faster than the photon, and the photon kept hanging in the middle of videos.
I'm pretty sure it was a wireless issue. I turned off WiFi and ran it on 3G, and it ran faster with no signal drops! I went back to WiFi and the performance dropped significantly.
Any suggestions for how to improve the WiFi performance? Would a newer router help? The 2300 is tried & true, and I've always like it. Does WiFi channel matter? Other ideas?
I'm not rooted, if that matters for any response.

What build version are you currently on? Have you flashed any of the updates or is the phone stock from Sprint?
I don't think a new router would help. My wifes nexus s 4g always has better signal strength than my photon when on wifi, I compared it to a friends Htc sensation connected to the same router and he had the better signal strength, and places where my evo 4g use to get a very weak signal but was still able to connect the photon won't connect at all.

I have a good router at home and a good one at work (different brands) and my WiFi is fast and smooth while at work but sometimes at home it is slow and chunky. Very sporadic at home for some reason and it never seemed to happen until after one of the updates.

I have the same issue after the last "update". It seems to lose the wi-fi connection and keeps any network from connecting. I have to turn the wifi off and wait for the 3G to connect or I won't get any mail. I can't figure out what changed, but it used to work perfectly. I'm contemplating rolling back to the first update.

Ok, I bit the bullet and used RSD to roll back to the earliest version of the code (I didn't lose any data or even the location of the widgets on my screen) and it totally fixed the WiFi issues I've been having. Plus the battery seems to last quite a bit longer. I thought that the latest update was a loser, this just proves it.
I came to the conclusion on my own that the photon doesn't like any mixed wifi signals; i had my 2.4ghz router running with mixed b/g/n for wireless and it didnt play nice. Once i changed it to n only it worked way better.......

I am experiencing the same wifi issues after updating to 198_6. Which version did you roll back to?
I would be interested in knowing what version also,, I'm sure if I did some research I can find out on my own in the meantime,,,,

EXACTLY! This has been happening to me now on TWO Phones! I can't say that it's been just my home router though. I took my phone into the sprint store, hooked up to their wifi and same problem... Right off the bat it didn't connect to the market.
This happens at home and is super frustrating. I will get to browse a couple pages/apps/zedge then nothing. I've even had it go retarded enough to pop up the 3G icon as well as the wifi signal indicator...? No up/down arrows showed in the 3G to indicate data transfer but I was just like WTF?
So now when I leave my house, out of range of wifi, my phone blows up with e-mails, apps I've had in queue, etc.
I've noticed these problems more with the most recent update but I didn't spend too much time browsing without it though. Maybe I'll get a new one from Sprint and just never apply the update.
**EDIT: Both times I've received one of these phones the only update I've done is the most recent one. I haven't bothered checking the software version they are coming with. Is it possible they're no longer putting out the first update and these aren't cumulative? Just a shot in the dark but maybe I needed that first update before the second to make things jive. It's unlikely they would put out updates in this manner but I'm grasping for straws here.

My experience is different. The phone connects and works great at the office but not so great at home. Both routers are set on mixed. Not sure what the difference is (besides the brand of router). I do know the one at home is handing out IPs but the one at work is not. The server handles that.
Not sure what else could make a difference.
Just got my third Photon from the sprint store and same issue. This one already had the 42.5.7 update installed on it but wifi has been flakey. I'm convinced that it's something in the software combined with the wifi we are using. The ridiculous thing is I have a motorola SBG 900 that I use for wireless at home so you would think they would be compatible. I really like the phone otherwise so I hope a new update is right around the corner.
Just went and bought a $160 modem/router combo and my phone has no issues at all with wireless now...
Three Photons in a week and a good chunk of cash later and I can use wifi at home. And now that I've finally had time to play with it I find out wifi tether only does ad hoc natively.
I wouldn't mind having my Evo Shift back.
I'm having the same problem. I updated to 198_6 as part of the testing group and at first had no problems with Wifi. Now when I am connected to wifi (both at work and at home) I can't send or receive text messages, download from the market, nada. As soon as I connect back to 4G everything works perfectly. I'm gonna roll back tonight to the previous update. BTW, I also updated my PRL to 51082 and that didn't seem to help.
Is the problem basically where wifi is connected to the router then stops going past that? Like you still have an ip but no data?
If so try turning off notifications for gmail or turning off the "notify once option". This seemed to help me lose my connection to where i had flip on/off the wifi radio.
Let me know how you fare with this.

Are you running any "turbo or super G" like modes set on the router? I remember reading on the motorola forums that these sometimes may cause issues - other things, router firmware update if applicable... do you have an airave device? If so, make sure the distance between that and the router are more than 5ft apart in distance.
Still, in your situation - streaming over the wifi shouldn't be an issue with bandwidth to keep in consideration, but realistically speaking - that should be better than 3g speeds for video playback.
These were some of the thing I had picked up from while troubleshooting an ongoing issue I am still having with my old d-link di-624 and photon getting stuck at "obtaining an IP address" on the official Motorola photon forums. In the latter situation, mine will connect if I reboot the router... my other tablets and laptops connect flawlessly on this.

Last night, it started asking me for a password (which was weird, because it hadn't since I first got the phone and set the connection up), and I put the password in, but it kept saying "authorization error." I am really frustrated, I rebooted the phone, the router, removed the home wifi connection (the "forget" button) and reinput it -- I even booted into "safe" mode to make sure it wasn't some app -- no joy. It's a very simple linksys router, WPA/WPA2 security, all the other tablets/computers/phones in the house work just fine (tablets/other phone Android, laptops Windows.) And my Note was working just fine until last night -- no recent software install or update, it was seemingly just random. It's a stock Verizon Note, I haven't even bothered to root since it does everything I want.
Here's the kicker: I connect to OTHER public networks just fine. I connected to my work and McDonald's wifi this morning, no problems.
What could be wrong? I really need to be able to use my wifi at home, I don't see anything in Google or on the boards about this. I am hoping my search-fu is weak and someone knows what is up with this.
restore defaults on your router, then setup a new password.

I have been experiencing this problem for the past 4 days. I have owned my Note II since December 25, 2012 and it has been working on any WIFI AP ive tried. 4 days ago in the middle of the day, my phone started giving out "authorization error" and would not let me log in to my home WIFI. I have 4 computers, 3 smartphones and other devices all working perfectly in my home WIFI. My problem even occurred when connecting to open, unsecured WIFI AP also. Nothing seemed to work. I called Verizon and did all the steps leading up to factory reset. With no luck on any tricks or tips from them I called Samsung. They walked me through the same processes and everything, so I decided to do a factory reset. This did not fix anything. I still get "authorization error" and "wrong password" on any WIFI i try to connect to.
I found out yesterday if I stand within 5 feet of my WIFI router I can connect and browse the internet for a few minutes until it kicks me off and does the same old "authorization error". If I sign in to my WIFI within the 5 feet and walk away, it disconnects and again, gives me the error messages.
I called Verizon back and they are sending me a replacement phone.
TL;DR:
Try accessing your WIFI when you are right next to it.
If problems still persist, call your carrier.
I hope your phone isnt as busted as mine.
Argh, that's bad. At least my phone connected to open networks so I knew the hardware was ok -- I wiped the router and set it up again (per the suggestion in this thread) and I'm good for now. (Embarrassed I didn't think of that myself) Hope you have better luck with your replacement phone!

Ok............ wow you have me 100% nervous now. I've been experiencing this issue ever since I unlocked, rooted and ROM'd my Note 2 back in the middle of December, and I experience the problem with only my Wireless-N SSID on my router. I can connect to the Wireless-G band just fine but the N one gives me this error no matter whether it's open or not. I seriously hope this isn't an issue of broken hardware..............
I figured this was worth mentioning. I have 3 Note 2's in my household, 2 of them are running Beans Build 5 and Perseus kernel overclocked and the other phone is totally stock.
All 3 phones have the exact same issue of connecting to the 802.11 N band on my router. They connect to the G band just fine. I think this rules out any worries about it being a lemon issue. Most definitely is a Samsung software issue that's been happening to multiple models going back a few years. Here's a google search of this issue using non-phone specific parameters. Notice how ALL phone specific forums point to a Samsung device.
I have a bad feeling that this is not something that will be getting resolved any time soon.

The plot thickens. I have performed some tests on my router to see if I could get my phone to connect. Well here's my results:
5Ghz band = Wireless-N Only = Authentication error occurred
5Ghz band = Wireless-A/N Mixed = Connects instantly
2.4Ghz band = Wireless-N Only = Authentication error occurred
2.4Ghz band = Wireless-G Only = Connects instantly
The problem is clear. It's Wireless-N. I can connect just fine at Wireless-A speeds (54mbps max signal) and everything up to Wireless-G, independent of frequency, but as soon as I try to force Wireless-N onto my phone, it craps out and fails to authenticate. This happens regardless of whether I have the network encrypted or not.
And based upon my google search I have linked to in this post, I doubt this is something we can expect to be fixed anytime soon. Oh yeah and for the record, when I have my router set to Wireless-N only mode, I was able to connect instantly without error on my crappy old HTC Thunderbolt running a hacked together AOSP 4.0.3 ROM.

wireless n has been a unreliable joke since it was released...my favorite routers are the linksys wrt-54gl running linux dd-wrt firmware. one of the most affordable rock solid routers built. its only g band but most people do not need anything faster for home use. heck most of us cant afford the t1 type connection speed to utilize n band anyway.
Exact same problem as well...I'll have to try the Wireless N-only vs. Auto to see if that fixes it...
EDIT: Both wireless mode settings of 'N-only' and 'Auto' caused the problem. I had to set it to 'Legacy' in order to get the connection to stick without authentification errors. Have an ASUS RT-N66U router...
EDIT 2: Did the same thing on my Cisco E3000 and it worked as well.
Really looks like a Sansung wifi bug on the Note 2....

It's not Samsung. There have been issues with myriad devices and wireless N pretty much the whole time it's been around. Android OS or the the N standard-- I personally know people with other manufacturers hardware and the exact same issues. If it's an OS problem, you would think it would be fixed by now, but who knows, like was mentioned above, very few people need the bandwidth that wireless n can theoreticly provide.

It's definitely something specific with Samsung and the N2 since my cousin's G3 connects to the same router on 5GHz WirelessN/Auto with no issues at all. I think they have a bug to fix...
Can someone else perform a check with their Note 2 on a Wireless N only setting? It seems this is a bug that really need to be fixed.

Mines been working on N only since I got it. Rooted and running about 6 different ROMs.

I just had this issue come up when moving to an AOSP ROM this morning. I even nandroided to a previous ROM that had working WiFi and still not working. I restore defaults on my router and reset all my security settings. Still getting the same authentication error.

I have tried roms that were 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 with no luck.

I am pretty much to the point of using Odin to go back to stock and see if that fixes it. I went back to stock rooted rom that was my first backup and the problem still carries over.

This is a new one on me and I'm pretty familiar with networking.
I recently bought a new Asus RT-N66U and took my network down the other day to put it in place of my previous router. I was having some weird issue and one of which was quite interesting indeed. Whenever I attempted to connect my wife's Evo LTE to the router the router would crash. Took me a while to figure out what was going on but once I did I was able to get it to do it every single time. I was having a few random issues with this router and it wouldn't take a firmware update so I determined that the router itself was DOA and was going to RMA it for a new device. So, I went back to my previous router. For the record it's a Linksys/Cisco E3000 flashed with TomatoUSB that has functioned flawlessly for years now. The only thing these two routers share is probably the Broadcom chipset and I think that's about it as the N66U is a much better device from about every perspective. I got everything set up again and was relaxing in bed watching the Heat game tonight (Go Heat!) and my wife asked if her phone was on WiFi which reminded me that I forgot to connect her Evo again. My 2.4GHz side is pretty congested with smart TVs, security cameras and all sorts of antiquated devices so I wanted to put her phone on the 5GHz side of the old router as I was pretty sure that it had been on the 2.4GHz side the previous time w/o issue. The moment I enter the key and hit connect the router crashes and I lose the game (networked tuners) and had to pause to think if I actually put the old router back in place or not. So, it appears as though this problem occurs on BOTH routers and only with this one Evo LTE so I've narrowed it down to her device. Both her's as well as mine are running the same everything pretty much so I'm not sure what is causing the problem but it doesn't appear to be end-user adjustable. I've never experienced this personally with a wireless client but have heard of rumors of it happening. Most times crappy network gear is blamed but in this case these are two very solidly performing devices and I also have another copy of the client that is functioning on 5Ghz fine.
So, what say you? Any ideas on what the fix is for this other than not using the 5GHz band? Until I finish my PoE switch and running network cable to all my security cameras my 2.4GHz side is pretty maxed so I'd rather not use that even if it does work. Surely there's something I'm missing here that I can correct to resolve this issue.
Anyone seen this one? I'm thinking it could have something to do with the WPA2+AES handshake because I don't think I was running that encryption on the previous router and her phone connected fine. But, again, my Evo LTE is running that same encryption on this router and no problems at all. It appears to be a device specific problem but I'm not aware of any way to get to advanced WiFi settings or reset this piece of the phone w/o doing a factory reset or ??
There have been some threads on similar experiences. Try updating firmware and or trying consistency with authentication methods. From the past issues, nothing specifically to do with networking just compatability with different platforms. I use the Netgear N700 series with multiple platforms and never had any issues as of yet. Good luck.

The symptoms occurred with the shipped firmware on the router ending in .260 and it also occurred after I updated to the newer .270 firmware. I also attempted to update PRL and Profile of Evo LTE and the behavior still occurred. I would also like to point out that there was no firmware change on the previous router and it didn't occur before changing to WPA2+AES and did occur after with that one device (the other Evo LTE we have displayed none of these symptoms under any conditions nor have any of the dozens of other wireless clients present) so I'm leaning towards the encryption type but it's odd that it's only being caused by a single client on the network. Also, no amount of firmware updates or changes have affected the behavior. All of this was ruled out before ever creating this thread.
I got a THL 5000 today,when it connects to my Wifi it disconects after a short time.
If I try to connect to the internet it does not work, even when the wifi icon is on at the top of the screen.
Anybody had this?

I have a THL 5000 too. Same issue. In my case I notice that it does not happen everywhere. I get disconnect at home, and at one other place. At other places like work, starbucks barnes and noble no disconnect. I tried almost everything to get around the issue and have had success a few different way. This issues is not limited to THL 5000 its many other android phones running Kit Kat. My ipad 2 has the same issues and so does my vista laptop but the issues occur only at home. This got me to think it may be router issue incompatibiity since some devices work perfectly and some dont I have three that disconnect in the same location. My ipad one has no issues my ipad air has no issues, just THL 5000, vista laptop, and ipad 2 have chronic disconnect.
My first way around this issues was to change the security setting on my router to WEP from WPA/WPA2 (both versions of WPA gave me disconects) when I did this they no longer disconneced from WIFI The issue here is that WEP is not very secure, but it solved the issue. I had checked for firmware update on the router but it reported they were all up to date. My devices are up to date too.
So if you are ok with WEP security it may fix the issue for you.
I personally did not want to keep using WEP, because my friend showed me how he can hack into my wifi. So I continued my search for another work around. I found that a wifi extender works. I found one for $30 at walmart and I had my phone link to the extender and the extender link to the router. This worked well for all devices and allowed me to maintain WPA security feature. So while not a fix it is a work around and not expensive.
A third solution is just buy a new router, but from what I gather other router have issues too, Nighthawk AC 1900 I heard has disconnect issues. So if you go via new router method keep in mind you want to save he receipt until you know for sure disconnect issue is gone. Basically its a compaibility issue. Also this may be most expensive route.
fourth methob if you phone had a previous Andorid OS (previous to Kitkat) you can try and restore a older version of the OS. Many have had success with that. In my case It came only with Kitkat so I could not place an older version.
Fifth method get a new phone. Since I could not return the phone I personally just run my phone via range extender at home and this works for me. I found a netgear range extender for $30 on amazon.
So while I don have a solution for you, there may be some work around that might work for you.
