Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I just successfully replaced my trackball in my Eris with a blue blackberry replacement. If you're wanting a different color for it but are bummed that it doesn't have all the multicolored LEDs like the nexus one, this is another option. Doing this WILL void any kind of warranty/insurance you have on your phone and I take no responsibility if you screw anything up. Just get a replacement trackball from DealExtreme. Link posted below.
Then, all you have to do is remove 4 screws from the back of the phone (one under a tiny sticker) and then 2 more inside the phone that are holding the charging/usb port in place. Gently lift the circuit board and pull out the old trackball. Pop the new one in, screw everything back together and you're good to go. Keep in mind that you won't be using the chrome ring surrounding the new trackball, just the inside part of it that is the actual trackball. It's not a very difficult mod at all, and it may even work on other phones (not sure). Anyway, Good luck guys!!

Edit: Here you go guys:

Any way to post pictures of this?
you should post pics.
I'm not sure, let me see if I can post some. I might need to get a higher post count to be able to do it..
I've got the pictures ready to go, but I can't post links yet. I guess my account still needs to be verified. Any help with that??
send me a pm and ill post the link

Oh yeah also you can just paste the address for the link in your post. We will copy and paste it into a new window and still get to the page.
I definitely want a link for the trackball since when I searched for "nexus one trackball" it came up with:
http://www.dealextreme.com/search.dx/search.nexus%20one%20trackball
Well, I would have posted a link but I couldn't. It wouldn't let me post any kind of link (i don't think)..
Well, apparently I can post links...cool.
pics added.
Durr my bad I thought you were replacing it with a nexus one multicolored led trackball.
What size Torx driver did you use to remove the screws?
Great mod instructions for trackball color customization! Too bad that stupid little VOID sticker is there on the screw hole.
can you post an after picture of your eris?
thanks
OOPS #1 - ignore my post.. im on 3 hours sleep.. damn poker...
lol, ok.
I actually just found a small enough flathead screwdriver and used it. Worked fine with both the outside and inside screws.
That's pretty slick, but figure out a way to add RAM to this slow POS and I'll be REALLY impressed ;-)

uhm... update to 2.1, you wont need any extra RAM.
back on topic: that's freaking righteous. my scroll ball just died (wont scroll down for some reason... all other directions work) so im using that as an excuse to get a replacement eris (installed leak want root).
now i just need to decide to go red, or get a green similar to the android's color.
so you're going to get a new phone so you can have root and then change the trackball on that new phone?

I realize it's off topic, and apologies to the OP, but uhm... I have 2.1, and still need RAM. The thing doesn't have enough RAM, period. Well, I guess if I never load any 3rd party apps it might be better, but if the apps are stored in the same space as running programs, RAM will always be an issue, period.

Anyone got a Vibrant laying around doing nothing? I need a motherboard or charging port.
Can someone confirm this will work? At the very least, I could rip the charging port (USB) out of it... I doubt the motherboard would work.
where are all of those "I bricked my phone" threads when you need them??
If you are still looking to get one. I could use one too. Just let me know how much and ill send you the cash.

I'd like to have the motherboard if you don't need it after you're done. I'm curious as to if I can change the LEDs for the hard keys.

Phone is now off to Samsung. Once I hear back that they wont repair it, someone offered to sell me one for $10.
If it comes to that, I may solicit help on the soldering it to the motherboard. I can solder, but I have never done small electronics.
Dude ill buy 20 mobos if someone can get my babys pics off mine. Those r priceless to me plus I could keep themeing vibrant lol.

I need to go back and read your thread I guess... how is a cracked screen preventing you from getting your babies pics man? I am ubber confused by that.
Its not the cracked screen. Ive got 2 vibes. My wifes just crapped out alll of a sudden running stock. Mine had the cracked screen but it dont affect performance. Its been like that since I dropped "gorrilla glass" in the grass a week after I got mine a year ago. Idk wtf happend to hers she made a call on stock and it goes to the vibe bootload screen then dies. I got it into recovery once but ir died before I can save drives. (less then 20 secs).
Samsung says its because its been dropped and wants roughly 200 each to fix my issues even though ones bone stock that turned into a paperweight....
Sent from my Precision Vibrant
wait... hers should EASILY be covered under warranty with Samsung. Assuming a july 15 purch, you should still have until Oct.
Are you saying T-Mo was saying "no," or samsung. If the latter, that is complete BS and I need to get more clarification for how they justify it?
Can you pull the files in the 20 seconds with ADB in bursts?
EDIT.. TWEET SENT

Phone itself still runs fabulously, minus the main screen haha. Soft LED buttons also work.
Above picture is the aftermath of being ran over by forsure atleast 1 car, but possibly 3.
About a month ago, I attempted to disassemble it & screen swap with a bricked donor to some success. Runs & displays with the donor screen, but I think i ****ed up a couple fuse contact points because random seizure lines strobe once in awhile.
Anywho, it's dissambled into 3 different parts atm: Motherboard, Digitizer/AMOLED pane, and the main shell.
@thehandi,
Have you tried android screencast. Before the gingerbread bootloaders we were using it to see recovery through the rainbows. It will show what should be in your screen. And you can use your mouse to navigate your phone
Beware of angry gingerbread man
Right people.
After having my vega for a week nearly, and after being skint, Ive tried to reproduce somthing I once saw on a flight that some guy had his phone propped up in.
It may have already been posted as it is very simple? If it has, I apologize for reposting.
Method
First you need a good sized piece of firm cardboard, roughly 2 inches longer than A4 sized Id say.
I found that cereal box sides, were perfect, especially double layered.
once you have your piece of cardboard, or doubled-up-cereal-pack-board you need to trace this shape onto it:

Sorry it may seem a bit wonky, its not supposed to be, you get the idea of the shape from it. Make yours as neat and as symetrical as you wish.
Next, cut out and keep the area below the shape you drawn.
you should have this shape left:
Now you need to reinfoce all the edges, I used plain old cellotape, a few layers at least if you want it to last. Pay particular attention to the Hook areas as these take the brunt of the wear. See image below.
Now cover the thing in gaffer tape! I used it and it seemed perfect, pliable and strong. Other variations may be just as good if you dont have gaffer tape/duct tape. Mine looks like this, a bit rough I know, but it was the first one.
Your done! It is pretty self explanitory from here in. But just to complete this guide I will post visual instructions on how to use it with your tab.
1. Bend it.
2. Place the bottem edge of the tab into hooks.
3. Open it out a little and it should look like this,
Done.

Thankyou if you took the time to read this.

My friend broke the screen on his Galaxy SII (i9100) during summer vacation. We ordered a screen&bezel replacement part from eBay, and have succesfully disassembled the phone, removed everything that needs to be removed (the new bezel is kind of an empty one, so I have to move just about all the easily removable parts from the old one). I've moved all parts except the PBA and sub-PBA (usb board) to the replacement part.

Now, the problem here seems to be that in the original part, where the USB board goes, there's this golden thingy underneath:
Which you can see is missing from the replacement part:
Since there's clearly a connection for that golden bar (pic: http://i47.tinypic.com/166gaqc.jpg ) underneath the usb board, I am fairly certain the phone won't work as intended if I just screw the board onto the replacement part as it is.
I'm also wondering about the small cable popping up from underneath the casing - is it supposed to just press down against the gray/silverish area when you screw the board onto the part or is there a connector for it to press against, maybe a part of the golden bar/thingy that's on the original part but not on the replacement? The cable's clearly visible in the first picture.
I've tried to search the web for videos, instructions, answers or any information about this, but can't seem to find anything to help with this one. If someone here is able to point me in the right direction or better yet, provide instructions for this, I'd really appreciate it!

Theres a good video that shows everything.Look at the motherboard topic I created (profile>view users topics)and a chap called Roger posted it.
Also you can download the service manual for the s2 off samsungs site and see what that gold bar is for.

Cosmic Blue: I've read and partially followed that tutorial, yes, but it's in no way helpful with this problem as the replacement part used in the tutorial has a new USB-board on it already and thus the guy doesn't even remove the USB-board at any point.
theunderling: Thanks for the tip, though I already watched that video as well - very helpful and clear indeed! Regardless, it doesn't help with the golden bar thing as the replacement part used in the video already has the golden bar on it. I also went through all the .pdf's in my service manual download, can't find a mention of the golden bar. Is it in there? If it is, where exactly?
I mean, what I really need to know here is if the golden bar is needed (99% sure the answer to this is yes) and how to move it from the old part to the new one that's missing the bar since I'm afraid to just go poking around and possibly break my friends phone. Also, the small cable that's sticking out - in the video it seems that the board is just installed on top of it, leaving it pressed against something that after examining the old part seems like a small strip of silver-color metal right next to the golden bar. This strip is also missing from the replacement part which leads me to think it's an extension of the golden bar. Anyone have any experience with this particular bit of the hardware?
Anyone?
You should call the person who sold it to you. He may have given you a defective board by mistake. I have checked the internet and all videos I have seen have the gold bar as part the screen assembly.

Alright, will do and will report here after the issue is solved in case someone else will find the information useful.
Thanks!
Edited years later as I shamefully forgot to report back... Yeap, got a new board and it worked just fine. That was the culprit.
Hi there,
i have purchased a smashed screen i9100 from a well known auction site and have decided to rebuild the s2 just to learn and play with it.
i have also purchased a new back and middle frame so i will be remounted the mainboard and other stuff back into the new housing.
i have been following a youtube tutorial on the strip down. it looks very "easy" to do. however i notice there is a small circuit above the camera. i will try explain this the best i can as i don't have any pictures just yet.
know if you remove the back cover which houses the battery, simcard and micro sd card, you may notice above the the rectangle camera and flash protector that there is a sticky circuit. this is what i have seem to damaged when trying to replace it between the two. i would be grateful if anyone knows what it is and maybe i am pushing it, but i would be even more grateful if anybody knows where i can purchase it from.
by looking at the circuit and following it around, it looks like some sort of antenna. i am no electrical/electronics expert (i'm a mechanical engineer by profession and enjoy learning about new things). it seems when you split the two cases with a case opener you will notice a small tab on the other side which is connects onto the mainboard.
so again, i would be grateful if the xda people can help me.
i've torn the circuit when trying to transfer.
if people require, i will try post some pictures
Thanks XDA members!

you have sent a link to the youtube video i use.
Thanks for your help.
the video does not explain the part that i am on about. however he does put a link in the description about poor antenna issues etc etc.
With this i can show you what i mean now a bit better. the person has posted this photo of "antennas"
according to that i am on about gps antenna.
it loops onto the back as a sticker above the housing/protector of the camera and flash. it is the tape thing you see in the first picture i have attached.
i have been using that site (orignal comment about a well known auction site) but i try not to advertise in forums. however if you do find a link for this part, your help would be appreciated.
i personally don't advertise, but i don't mind people doing it i don't "force" people. every person has their own beliefs.
anyways, i would love it if somebody on here can sort me out with this gps antenna issue i face now after i ripped it while transferring into its new housing
Thanks to everyone once again
Thought I would post this as I just brought one..
My Screen died yet again. after only having it in for service about March. Mind you it was here in Asus China.. so...
Anyway, It was giving me the dreaded black screen no turn on type thing, Plus a few of the other characteristics that have been documented in the Katkiss thread of late- Corrupted partition.
After the last battle with it, I ended up with a full strip on the left hand side about 50mm that is unresponsive.. nothing that you can do on the touch side of things, but mouse still works. Anyway.. wasn't going to send it back. as its not worth the aggravation of dealing with the idiots at the Asus aftersales service. So went and brought the Nexus 10.. Loving it..
but for project decided to look for another LCD screen and came across this seller with the full frame for sale.. so its about $US65.. so its my weekend project.. as Dam.. with Katkiss JB4.3 around.. I just want to play with it on the TF101.. Just not ready to let this thing die as yet.
I will update the post once i get it up and running.

Anyway..
Not to be deterred.. I got out the trusted plastic tools and went about separation of the screen from the LCD panel...new one...as I already had got the old one off with no drama..and cleanly.
Note..make sure you know which you are separating..as I found out the hard way that I was actually separating the gorilla glass from the touch screen...were wondering why it was so dam hard...plus one hell of a mess..
Lucky the original was still in good order so I finally was able to separate the new LCD panel and clean it up..
I almost gave up..but pushed through..it wasn't going to beat me.. plenty of man handling going on..I put it all back together...yeha..
Mind you I wasn't thinking that it was going to crank up as I was man handling the LCD panel pretty heavily ...but up popped Tims little mascot and 4.2.2 fired right up...sign of relief..
So straight to 4.3 I have came and its powering along...too good to be true..
Thanks Tim...and others that have ported the 4.3..
Of course I have a few more creaks from around the edges And a little light bleed on the left hand side but as I was lucky that the double sided tap from the original glass was still sticky and usable..
