My fiance and I both got thunderbolts a few months ago. My phone keeps losing the network connection. The 3G icon completely disappears from the status bar but the signal bars remain and have a few bars of signal. If I try to do anything when the phone is like this I get a no network connection error. Mine does this about every 10 minutes for about 5 seconds. i can have my phone laying right beside hers on the table and hers holds solid 3G and mine doesnt.
I have called verizon tech support 2 times about this and the second time they want to open a trouble ticket because they think its an issue with the network. I think I have a bad phone and would just like them to replace it. Anyone else seen this happen and can shed some light on it?
What kind of battery cover do you have? Only reason I ask is that the actual antenna for 3g/4g is on the battery cover itself.
You could get a signal boost if you put aluminum foil in your battery cover, not covering the camera holes of course. The 2 gold connections on the top of your phone in the back are the connectors for the antenna on the back cover. So by putting aluminum foil on the cover you are basically extending the antenna or if you put aluminum on the gold it might bridge a small gap that is preventing conductivity between the antenna and the contacts.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the link, but I already checked that stuff. I'm really thinking I have a faulty device. My battery cover is the stock one and is on the phone tightly, and I even swapped my battery cover with my fiances. I even tried slightly bending the antenna contacts up so they make better contact and still have the same problem. The last thing I can think of is that I could have a bad sim card. 4G works fine when I'm in a 4G area though. I don't get why verizon thinks it is my line.
I've heard of one other person whos line is bad no matter what phone they use and that's slayers (CM7) wife.

First the bars are for voice so you can lose 3g and still have cell service. 2nd have you tried the app LTE onoff? If you put it on the option for cdma auto prl it should bring the signal in. If that doesn't help I would take it to Verizon.

I lose 3G and 1X both. I can't call or get data when this happens. I still have bars but the 3G/1X icons are non-existent on the status bar. And yeah I have the radio tools option in my wireless settings menu and I have toggled back and forth with no change. My phone is rooted and I've tried several radio combos and also many different roms with the same problem. I have even RUU'd the phone back to 100% stock with the same problem.
I'm almost tempted to go back to my incredible to see if it happens on it. I never had this issue until I got the thunderbolt.
I am on vacation this week and my 3g disappeared in the middle of a hotspot session yesterday. I spent all afternoon flashing, clearing, etc, and my ultimate solution is the one below from android central. I am certain this is a Vzw doing something to the towers in the area as my Xoom, my wife's iPhone, and her iPad2 all kept 3g the entire time.
This should be added to OP.
If the link fails Google "Thunderbolt 3g problems". It will be the first result.

Here is the entire article to give proper credit.
QUOTED FROM ANDROID CENTRAL:
"We'd hoped to give Verizon's network a couple more days to settle before breaking this one on you, but these are drastic times, folks. See, more than a few of you have had issues with getting 3G data on the HTC ThunderBolt when you're in a non-4G area. Nope, doesn't make much sense. But landle in the Android Central Forums has done a nice job explaining how the TB uses the eHPRD 3G network to speed the handoff between 3G and 4G data. Problem is, it ain't working for a lot of people. Good news is there's a fix --no hard resets (which until now had been the recommended fix), human sacrifice or other unpleasantness. Here's what you need to do:
Go to the ThunderBolt's phone dialer. Enter ##778# and hit Send.
You'll get a pop-up labeled EPST, with the choice to "View Mode" or "Edit Mode." You want "Edit Mode."
You'll be asked for a password. It's 000000.
Now flip down to "Modem Settings," and then choose "Rev. A." Change the setting from eHRPD to "Enable," hit OK, then press the Menu button on the phone and tap "Commit Modifications." That's it. You're done.
The phone will reboot (don't worry, you're not losing any data here), and things should, you know, actually work. As landale points out, you'll want to change this setting back once Verizon gets its network sorted out. But in the meantime, enjoy your, erm, new 3G! [Android Central Forums] Thanks, landale!"

Thanks. I saw this article before, but if I do this my phone won't switch to 4G when I go into a 4G area right?
I still don't get why my phone does this an my fiances doesn't. It is 99% likely that we are on the same tower too.
EDIT: Just tried the fix from the article posted above and still having the same problem.
I am sorry to have gotten your hopes up. I should have read closer, I took it that you both had the issue. Plain as day on a reread though.
Had it worked I think your 4G would have been busted.
I added some more details to my issue when I reposted in another thread. Next time you lose 3g try checking for software updates to see if it pulls the 3g back on.

Is the *228 radio update method still valid for the Tbolt? I'm assuming if you were on the phone with Verizon they would have had you do that if it is. But just throwing this out there in case we are just overlooking the obvious.
Also added my question to the post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15256013#post15256013
@sabbotage
If you are on stock rom & radio, then you either have a bad sim card or a defective phone. Go to verizon & swap sim cards. If you still have problems, exchange the phone.

nope it isn't, Verizon pushed a new PRL to my phone because I was having 4G issues (that was their solution?). didn't fix anything. and my 3G icon disappears once a day for a few seconds.
This is ridiculous. It's taking like 2 mins to load Google?
I've already done the proxy removal and I'm only getting like 100 kbps. What's going on here??

That's about right for Sprint 3G. It's within the 3G range for Sprint, anyway.
After removing the proxies I went from like 500kbps to 1.3mbps in my house...1-2 bars...sometimes 3....
Today I was in an area that was previously almost a deadzone, no bars but no roaming.....I got 1.5mbps-2.1mbps!??? It was phenomenal. The 4G in that area only netted my like 7mbps, even though 4g in my area (which I cannot get in my house) I've gotten up to 18mbps before.
Call sprint, report deadzones. If nobody tells them they won't do anything.

If you live in the boonies.
It's fast in California.
I live in NYC.
Just did a speed test and got 11 kbps. Pretty sure NYC isn't in the boonies.
Live in Chicago burbs, as I type this, roaming alert came on
On my.EVO 4G don't think I ever saw the roam alert. On this 3VO it roams few times a day. That NEVER used to happen.

3G service when I had my Lotus and Moment were actually impressive for a mobile device...I was surprised.
3G Service the day I got my Evo4G was VERY impressive....and it just declined steadily from there. For a while I thought it was me screwing with the phone too much....but 2 and 2, etc....
The 3G speeds I get on my Evo3D are right in line with the Evo4G and the steady decline in service in my area (probably proportionate to some of the (now) 500,000 android activiations every effing day)....but the radio is like 1-1.5 bars lower than my Evo would average....which sucks. Performance isn't affected unless it's a fringe situation, like the bathroom at work...which sucks, I like to read CNN when I poop, but I digress.
I expect radio updates will help a lot, but, I ain't touchin' any of that until we have some action out of HTC or failing that one of our brilliant devs does what they are bound to do anyway...
...I've gotta admit, I've been F5ing the living fnck out of the two root threads in development and they are fascinating and at times exciting....I recommend it, it's better than the drunken 6-year-old mob mentality that has tended to coalesce in General lately--I haven't even bothered with Q&A....

So flash a verizon PRL and watch your usage....once you hit 300mb put back the sprint PRL...it's like you are throttling yourself, lol.
Seriously, if Verizon is that much better where you are do it....where I am Verizon has a stronger signal but they also have MANY MANY MANY times more customers than Sprint, so, their network is way oversold and over utilized....Sprint not so much....so Sprint has weaker signals and faster speeds on average.
In terms of voice, Sprint is the clear winner where I am but for some reason Data is just the worst.
How would I go about flashing a Verizon PRL? I have the PRL file but I'm unsure of how to actually flash it.
Did you try calling Sprint and getting them to reprovision your phone?

My mistake for saying 'flashing', force of habit...
First thing you have to do is get your MSL, you can either call Sprint and ask for it or use the popular method (with CDMA workshop) that's currently around the top of the Dev section... I usually just called for it, but, for geekliness I had to rip it out myself and it was an effin' snap to do, so, just follow those directions to get it...
....then there is a thread floating around here (and/or the Evo4g forum) with a number of Verizon and Verizon/Altell hybrid PRL's.....download a couple...31337 is good I hear
then you punch in some ## codes, load the PRL file, reboot and ***POOF***, you are on verizon--still consuming roaming data and voice--but you aren't limited to 1x....
EDIT: Don't forget to hit "menu:commit changes" to reboot--or you won't make any changes.

Hmm thanks. I already have the MSL, but I don't see anything in the ##3282# to load in a new PRL. Is that the right code?

I used to live in the Des Moines area of Iowa and the 3G was awesome...moved to Chicago and noticed its about dial up...don't know how you guys got/get by on just 3G. The EVO never went off 4G...
What's really sad is I could do speed tests on 3G in IA that are only slightly slower than my 4G tests here.
I am coming from an Evo 4G. My apartment has always had sub par reception on sprint but now with the Evo 3D it is becoming irritating. In the same places I had 3G, I now am roaming. In a place where I had 2-3 4G bars, I have barely 1. I have tried updating my prl, my profile. One thing that I will note is that 4G on the 1 reported bar is about as good as the 3 bars on the old Evo. However 3G reception is definitely not very good overall.
My question - as I approach the one month I have had this phone, I wonder if I should:
A. Exchange the phone for another 3D. Has anyone heard of reception issues related to hardware? How has this device compared for everyone to the old Evo as far as reception? Do I have a dud?
B. Return it and get an original Evo.
C. Something else - call sprint ask for airwave or something like that.
I appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks in advance.
My radio bars do show a tad lower, but I havent really noticed any issues.
I am willing to be some future PRL updates will help this.
My OG Evo was the same around launch time too
Had the same issue vs my old Eris on Verizon. Sprint reset the network which helped some, but I wound up manually changing the PRL to a USCellular one. Gained 4 bars.

Have some friends with different carriers test your area, see which is stronger and use their PRL. That's what I did, told that to the Sprint rep while getting my MSL and he liked the idea (I did hint I would leave if I couldn't get a better signal).

Had the exact same issue and well I returned mine this last Sunday and got a new 3d and well it's better so far. Last week Sprint updated prl over the air and it worked for a minute and then it was back to roaming, dropping calls, battery draining like crazy, sensitive power button. I know it's only Monday but I have not dropped one call or went into roaming yet.

Verizon is strongest but if I take that PRL then I wont have Sprint 4G will I?
Also how would you load the other PRL?
Thank you!
I had the power button sensitivity issue - where the button presses momentarily caused the power menu to come up instead of going into sleep mode. So I took that phone into Sprint yesterday and they gave me a new phone, within 30 days. Any replacement should be a new phone and not a refurbished one within the initial 30 days of purchase.
Point being is that they new phone to me doesn't pick up a signal as well as the other Evo 3D that I had. We have an Airave at work and the old phone would have max bars and crystal clear, today first day with the new phone was at about 2 or so bars and the one phone call was very well lets just say not so crystal clear.
Recommend you take the phone back and ask them to test it. They can test the phone for you, and worst case swamp it out for you. Don't recommend PRL hacks since those tend to get people kicked out of Sprint due to excessive roaming.

Sprint 4G is on a different radio than data/voice, WiMax vs CDMA/1Rxx.
If you search for say "carrier name" PRL July 2011, you should be able to find a current file. Download the file, open QPST Service Programming, click the tab "Roam" and put the file location in "Preferred Roaming". I don't think you have a dud. Rather than bars, what are your actual speeds using something like Speed Test from the Market. I've had well....more than 3 of these E3D's, lol, and only 1 got half-ass decent speeds out of the box. With some re-provisioning and data reset methods in the General section I got all of them to set up correctly on the network.
Hello,
Some people say they aren't experience the signal drop and garbled calls and that is very nice for them. Many of us though have returned our phones and experienced the same issue phone after phone on the EVO 3D.
Has anyone actually seen the problem go completely away with any of these roots? If so which one?
Thanks

Are you asking for a ROM that fixes the issue or one that has the issue? I'm using the stock rom - tried three evo 3d's so far - all have the signal drop issue. That is with stock everything - no additional apps. Also tried with stock everything and just the prl and software updates. Also tried with stock everything PRL updates and software updates and a bunch of software - they all dropped signal frequently.
Some people say they aren't experiencing it. I know 5 people with the EVO 3D and all experienced it. The tech at the Sprint store experienced it while checking out my first phone - gave me another one.
The CSR that I called at Sprint store said she'd heard alot about that issue and sent me an airave and a new phone.
The clerk at a store while I was out in Tucson said they got a lot of returns for the same issue and gave me my third EVO 3D - I had to keep trying because so many people here claimed they don't have the issue and that I must have a bad phone.
I spend about 2 hours on the phone each day and I'm starting to think the people who say they haven't experienced it just spend enough time on the phone to notice it.

What he's trying to tell you is that this is the development section and you shouldn't be posting new threads with questions here. Use QA or general.
In regards to your signal problem I've read various people experience it. I do not, and I assure you I'm not inexperienced with cell phones, signals, or issues with signals. In any event, you're likely about to get flamed unmercifully, so I suggest reposting this question in the QA section, or in general...you're not likely to get any answers better than the one I just gave you here.
probably another myth. I highly doubt getting s-off and unlocking the bootloader has anything to do better signal or call quality. Signals are probably due to lack or quality of service in a particular area.

Thanks -I'm about 99.9% sure it isn't service in the area. I have an older HTC sprint phone that works just fine - no garbled calls, no dropped calls. Other people at the office are not dropping calls on their Sprint phones either.
Over the past year I have seen the Sprint signal in my area get worse and worse. I can still make calls, but I seem to always be around 2-3 bars where I used to be full. I had to get an airave at home and have to force roam at work.
This doesn't seem to be a phone issue because it started to happen to me on my EVO over a few months and was exactly the same on my Evo 3D and even my Palm Pre before that. I think Sprint is working on getting 4G up and is not keeping up on their need for cell towers.
I don't think you will find any ROM or Kernal that can fix bad reception when there is just no reception to fix.
Maybe if you wrap your phone in foil and wear an antenna on your hat...

I disagree. I have both the 3d and the photon and when side by side the photon always has a better signal. Once there is a fix for that I'll be a happy HTC camper again.

Can someone explain to me the customer service levels at Verizon? I've been dealing with 4G data connection problems since the beginning of June. I decide to finally create a support ticket on July 3rd and again on July 11th (the first ticket was marked completed).
Every time I contact support for an update, they proceed to go through the same basic troubleshooting steps even though I gave them my case number already. Then they go through the "We're sorry for your ...." script and politely tell me that the network team is looking into it and it will be 3 to 5 days.
So, where to I go from here? I've contacted 6 different CS reps because no one previously followed up with me. Who or what is higher up than the network team?
The short term solution today was activate my old Incredible....aarrgh! My frustration level is at it's peak. Do I have any other choices besides wait and cross my fingers?

Why can't you just use CDMA (3g) only on your Rezound? I have 4g turned off on my Rezound to save battery. Or are you having issues with both 3g and 4g?

I can use 3g, but that isn't why I bought the Rezound. My specific issue with 4g is that it drops completely and randomly when using various apps that have GPS enabled (Facebook, G+, Foursquare, etc...). Shouldn't 4g drop to 3g or 1x if 4g isn't available? Since I'm waiting for Verizon anyway, I'll change it to see if it helps.
The messed up part is that the exact same thing is happening to my wife's Rezound too. We bought them together a few months ago and for the 1st month everything worked great! Verizon confirmed that we live in a 4g area so that isn't the problem.
it is the software radio on the phone. You probably live in a low signal level area. The phone is constantly trying to decide if it should be in 3g or 4g. You should root and try different radios. Calling CS is about useless in my opinion
Mine does the same exact thing, it's definitely frustrating. It used to switch to 3g just fine, but it doesn't anymore. How is it a software issue if it worked fine before? I didn't change anything, I even did a factory reset.
Set your phone to LTE, CDMA or LTE w/voice under phone settings

My thunderbolt did this, my girlfriends rezound does it, and my rezound does it but not as often or I don't notice. I'm on viperRez s-on and 2.11 boot and I haven't noticed it however when my rezound was stock I noticed it.
I think it's an issue with Verizon. They sent me a new thunderbolt and sim card and I still had the same issue.

Its supposed to go from 4g to 3g if there is no 4g signal. I have no use for 4g as I'm on wifi 90% of the time so I turned it off. Since both your phones do it I would say its a signal issue from the tower and not a phone issue. Verizon's LTE network has had some issues and all the bugs aren't worked out yet. Personally I would rather use the Rezound in CDMA only mode than the Incredible, its just an all around better phone.
This happens to me too (I'm completely stock) and it's really bothering me now. I went in to Verizon and they have me a new SIM last weekend but that didn't fix it. I know it's the phone cuz I'll be at work, home, wherever i know for a fact i have 4g. Doesn't drop to 3g, just cuts in and out. and it happens randomly (or so I thought ) but GPS activity does likely because I JUST did a hard reset after calling VZW yesterday and had no problems until I opened up Google maps.
I keep holding out for ICS hoping that'll fix it.
Side note: when I asked the rep about a release date, she said she couldn't find anything on the rezound!

Thanks for all the support and suggestions! For what it's worth, I'm completely stock and have done a factory reset twice. The thing that I haven't tried is to replace the SIM. I know that is a hit-or-miss solution, but at least I'll be able to cross that off my list when the CS rep calls back.....
The only other thing (I think) I can do is unlock/root/load an ICS ROM and hope that it fixes the 4g issue. I'm assuming a different radio is included with the ROM.
Thanks again...
I have a similar issue. My rezound is completely stock and worked fantastic when I first got it. I live in a high signal 4G area, and get 4-5 bars at all times. Since the beginning of June, my 4G just goes off randomly. Sometimes repeatedly to where its annoying and I put my phone back in my pocket. My phone has never switched from 4G to 3G, its just 4G 4-5 bars to nothing with 4-5 bars. I'd say if i'm using my phone, it happens 30+ times or more a day. Doesn't matter where in town I am. I've contacted verizon on several occasions (I know, a dead end road) and they told me there are no service interruptions in my area and they would call me back (of course, they didn't call me back). I consistently get 30-40Mbps on speedtest wherever I am. If i'm in the basement of my home in a certain spot, it drops to maybe 12-15Mbps.
Its been rather frustrating since I can barely use my phone when it acts up like this. Hoping the new OTA fixes the radios - then I'll probably dabble with CM9 (or 10 if its out by then). But until then, i'll just stay frustrated.
To answer you question, ask to speak with tier 2 support. These folk a lot more tech savvy than the average CS Rep.

Thanks, but I'm currently speaking to tier 2. In the realm of support, I'm not doubting they have skills, but I'm curious as to where my problem goes next. The 5 tier 2 reps have gone through the basics each time I called. The key words are, " I called". I would assume that notes would be made so everyone was on the same page for support.
So they all have told me that they were waiting for the network guys to give them an update. I think that means I got put into a large queue and they will get to me when they get to me.

Update: This morning my Tier 2 rep said that the network team updated the trouble ticket. They have tested all of the towers in my area and everything looks good (of course). They also have added my ticket to a parent ticket that is being sent to HTC, because this is a known problem with some Rezound phones. Being pessimistic, I really think smoke is being blown up my **** but what am I going to do?! Pointing fingers usually goes nowhere.....
Per my Rep., my options are to wait for an HTC software update or they will replace the phones with another "like new" Rezound. The like new part freaks me out after reading all the messed-up-phones-sent-back posts from our forums, but there might be a chance that a replacement fixes the problem. Should I wait it out or get the replacement?
Press 0 and it will direct you to talk with a person. Learned that trick a while ago and works almost everywhere.

they should really implement fastdormancy for 4G LTE because on 3G, theres a power state called CELL&URA_pch which doesn't use any data but it is able to keep a connection to the network.
I was also told there will be a software update to fix the 4G dropping issues and I was told that verizon is aware of the problem, and so is HTC. If its the same thing that was on the ICS leak, are the people running ICS leaks or roms based on these leaks having the same reception issues? I've been curious about this but rarely get on to post, i'm guilty of lurking.

I just flashed a co-worker's phone today with the latest ICS RUU that leaked and his data dropping issues are gone completely, for what it's worth.

Generally speaking this seems to very much be a software issue and unless it's truly a defective device I doubt getting a replacement would fix it. Here's what you do:
1. Flash the latest ICS RUU that leaked for the Rezound, NO you can't go back to the old firmware/software without a lot of work but it doesn't matter if you end up getting it replaced anways
2. Set up everything again and see how it goes
3. If you still have an issue, get the replacement
IF that doesn't fix the issue, your not unlocked, your not S-OFF, so your warranty still stands. It's not like your "NEW" device was doing very well anyways so I wouldn't let a replacement device bother you. I didn't read this whole thread but hopefully I'm not the first person to re-iterate this- "NEW" is just a matter of documentation and the fact that a product is new doesn't mean it's better or will work better than a refurbished device. I personally have had several refurbished devices over the years that worked just fine...much better then the new ones did.
