I am using this kernel which enables you to clock to 768 Mhz and my friend said this is impossible as the heros max is 528 Mhz, i am trying to tell him that this kernel allows you to clock to 768 Mhz but he still insists that the limit is 528 Mhz so how exactly can you clock to 786 Mhz?
same as with pc. the processor guarantees 528, depending on whether you got one of the "good" batch or the "not so good batch" you can turn that clock up.

you need to run a rom with an adapted kernal that allows overclocking to take place, currently this can only be done on some android 1.5 based roms. Check the title it usually advertises as overclock enabled.

yeah like Kimera.
You could do it on your rom your currently on but you would first have to take it apart, modify the kernal then rebuild it, so unless you really know what your doing its probably best just to switch to a new rom.

I see,... Excellent,... This is getting interesting now.
One more thing then if you don't mind....
I have previously been told how to add and remove .apk's from a ROM using it as a base. Is it anything like this?... Take the kernal out of my base ROM, swap it with the one from the Kimera ROM, maybe modify .xml files to tell it new filenames etc, then re-sign? Or is there alot more to it than that?
This is definitely something I'd like to be able to do sometime. Its not something thats needed right now though as I'm quite happy to quietly sit waiting for 2.1.
Thanks again Lenny.

Asking <> Trying!
The only way you can tell how far you can overclock the particular processor in your phone is to actually overclock incrementally, and see how far you can go before the phone becomes unstable.
Whilst Kendons response was terse, he was quite right in what he said, and you should really apologise!

Yeah your right, asking isn't really trying. I could have read up more and found out for myself. But I don't agree that I owe him an apology. For a fact he knew that he would be no help to me whatsoever and would likely just tick me off. He definitely was not trying to help. I'm still adamant it would've been more appropriate for him to say nothing at all.
... And thanx for the input Dave & Bonesy. I'll keep what you said in mind, definitely dont want it burning out.
Thank you.

I might be wrong here, but I think any ROM released for a dual core device is already going to be utilizing both cores.
you can download system tuner and go into the tweaks section. hit the cpu tab, and make sure a bunch is running in the background. then rapidly slide the notification bar up and down really fast. you should see a second cpu bar come up.

OK so you can try this although I can't guarantee that it will work or that MIUI even has a inti.d folder. I'm assuming it does.
1. download attached file
2. rename attached file to "10dualcore" (remove the .txt)
3. copy the file to your phones /system/ect/inti.d folder
4.) reboot
5.) check with system panel (free) see if dual cores in working.
Thats it, see it really wasn't that hard. If it doesn't work then I don't know what to tell ya.

2. I've tried to research a good amount on my own.
I know that much customization will require root as a starting point. I'm not sure I want to run a custom rom or not yet as there doesn't seem to be much of a benefit at this current time. The overclocking interests me a bit.. because, why not? I guess that's my question. With using Dag's root and overclock, are there any stability issues at all? Other issues I might run in to? I just want to be positive of what I'm doing before I mess anything up. Should I run a backup of some sort or are roots relatively harmless?
Thanks in advance.
If you do a backup before you do anything its dam near impossible to brick your phone.
Make sure you understand what your doing before you do it not just do it because someone said it works.

Overclocking kills battery life. Theres the risk of failing the rooting process too(doubt that will happen...). Flashing also increases flash counter and voiding warranty(go learn how to reset it)
flashing a lot damages internal memory also(you will prolly notice it after 1.5 yrs)
So are we recommending against doing this just for the sake of overclocking? or..
Sorry like you guys said I don't want to do it just to do it, want to be sure I'm doing this for a reason. If nothing else I can remove bloatware after root, right?

What is a lot for you?
I ran OC and honestly I can live with out it. Not worth the battery killing any faster. This thing is fast out of box, rooting and removing bloats will make it faster. Using a superscript takes away any other lag issue that I had with keyboard, touch screen responsiveness etc. My advice, don't OC.

LOL Seriously!! Those of us who tweak the phones this much will want something new well before 18 months! I had my Atrix almost exactly a year before I went to the Note.
Rooted. It's amazing how much easier that was than the equivalent process with Wp7 (getting a student dev account free was a pain in the ass). So I'm pretty sure I have Dag's kernel (pda.tar) uploaded. I want to try out holo's (don't see why not). I thought I could've just substituted his for Dag's initially, but couldn't figure out how. There was only one pda.tar file available and I saved both kernels in the same folder. It's really just the boot.img file that you're flashing, isn't it? I might not know what I'm talking about so rather than continuing if someone could just let me know how to update with holo's.

+1. Flashing does degrade non-volatile memory over time. Eeproms can't handle being written to over and over and over. Things like USB drives get around this by writting files non-contiguously to random blocks/sectors (and by using other methods), and keeping a table of blocks that have gone bad. So you can write a 1 mb file over and over and it isn't writing it to the first meg on the drive, it is going in pieces all over the place, randomly each time. If it writes a block and that doesn't pass a checksum test, it will write the block again to another area and mark the block as bad so it never writes to it again.
Of course this isn't great for performance on a USB drive, but that is why this IS a problem on something like the OS partition of a phone. There you can't write randomly, you need contiguous files for performance, so each time you flash a new rom you are writing to the same memory space every time. Eventually you wear it out and there is no "bad block" table to help.

This is nothing special, its a Stock, Rooted, and Updated. By updated that means that I updated all the apps that Verizon/HTC didn't also ODEXed them. I also removed some bloat but nothing that can't be downloaded from Google Play. This is directly from Verizon's OTA that I personally pulled from the phone. I have updated the graphics drivers thanks Snuzzo. Yes I added my Hosts file lame right (I know some of you like ads sorry)? I also unlocked the locked bookmarks. Think thats about it.. this is how the ROM (if you can call it that, not sure) should have come from Verizon.
DOWNLOAD
EDIT:
I also need to add that if you are coming from GB and you are S-ON this is probably not for you. This will not flash the radios. It will flash the kernel if you are S-Off.
MODS:
Turbo Prop by Danutzz
Enabled hardware acceleration
Disable Debug notification
Added the HTC One sounds/notifications.
1% Battery (flash)
DOWNLOAD
Other stuff I forget?

Haha I know for at least myself, it does help to know. There's a certain level or standard that I think people have when deciding on a ROM to flash and I don't think many would give it a run if they didn't know exactly what you did. I wouldn't want to flash something that I was in the dark about, and creating a detailed layout of your ROM and change log shows commitment and attention to detail that is reflected in building said ROM.
Oh and we do love screen shots as well.
Just my two cents.

Oh, thanks. Does that mean the Hyperdrive rom CPU settings will not work for me? Thanks! Sorry.. I'm new to andriod. It just that Im confused why hyperdrive would have that CPU settings feature if it doesn't work.

I believe those settings only work for a phone with an unlocked bootloader. Those are settings best left alone unless you know what you're doing.
You can mess with some settings on the stock kernel but you shouldn't, Samsung uses a special hotplugging governor dependent on a lot more factors then your usual custom kernel, so unless you really know kernels inside and out then you'll only hinder your kernel. The app will also show you that you changed settings in the stock kernel that really can't be changed.

It's been my experience that any developer worth his salt is using a kernel as customized for his ROM as he can make it. He might not get it exactly right the first time or two out the door, but he will get it right.

There's a few AOSP developers who build ROMs and kernels but developers usually only work on one disclipine.

I guess I could have been a bit clearer. The developers I've followed over the years will work with the kernel guys to get one tweaked for their ROM. snuzzo over with Rezounds seemed to be a master chef of kernels.

Got ya, times are different with this phone since only MDK users can even touch their kernel.

Unfortunately, several people seem to think that Safestrap allows them to flash custom kernels.
Well, in one sense, that's true. You can flash a custom kernel on a MK2/MJ7 phone. When the flash completes, you've bricked your phone and set the warranty void flag. But it did flash, right?

When I get a new phone.. I hop on XDA and read read read then I download the factory images I WOULD need in case I need Odin to rescue me. Just seems like people don't ever get prepared in case something goes wrong. I suppose though people learn from mistakes... I sure have

I got my phone on Verizon's Edge program. I can get a new phone every six months. I needed to be sure that I could get this thing back to stock before I rooted. I've been reading these threads since I got the phone in September... in fact, I read these threads plus those for the phones I was considering.

Good deal! I know there's a lot to look through on here and a lot to learn. Luckily there are stickies made that answer pretty much all those kind of questions. You'll be good.. You can always use Odin and get it back to complete stock.

Once I knew that... and they were able to root the Jelly Bean updates... I jumped in and did the deed myself.
Maybe if they were to sticky a "what you need to know, read this first" thread at the very top of each of the forums, it might cut down on the redundant questions.
