orange are giving me a new phone? - TG01 General

hi all,
i have had the same issues with my tg01 and im now on 3rd handset, orange said there going to offer me a new handset after 3 changes and im interested in what they will offer.
the lady said the other handsets will be of 'similar spec', ie, touchscreen, wifi, windows.
does anyone know what phones these might be? im hopeful they will offer me a hd2 as that is of closest spec to the tg01, what do you think?
other possible phones of similar spec stocked by orange
htc hero graphite (android)
htc tattoo ink (android)
htc desire (android)
htc hd2 (windows)
blackberry 9700 (RIM)
blackberry 8900 (RIM)
blackberry 8520 (RIM)
motorola dext (android)
samsung monte s5620 (symbian?)
the htc desire and the htc hd2 and the tosh tg01 all share the same chipset so would orange see this a similar spec? or are they gonna offer me a tocco lite or some crap?
any thoughts

You aren't going to get a HD2
Orange didn't carry it.
So, you will probably be offered something like the HD or an android handset

see now im tied between sticking with my tg01, as it does everything it should, just not when you want, or jump ship and get an android handset like the hero?
decisions decisions, whats the hd like? i like htc devices but is it going to be thicker than the tg01?

i think if u like something similar to tg01, hd2 is a good choice, but if u want something the highest value, I think desire is the most expensive on the list
personally, I love big big screen...so I will go for hd2..i think it's 2x thicker.

In my experience, Orange have a way of defining the term "same spec" which is very unique to them and alien to the rest of the English speaking world, so be careful.
Two weeks ago, they said they would only offer me a phone from the same list they gave me in January. These were the LG Arena KM900, HTC Hero or the HTC Touch 3G. I'm not joking, they consider the HTC Touch 3G to be equivalent spec to the TG01! What planet are they on?
They should be offering the HTC Desire or the Sony Xperia X10 because of the fact that they also have large WVGA screens and a snapdragon CPU. They might and tell you that the CPU clock speed is not important and its all relative, which can be true sometimes, but you should point out that in this case, the snapdragon supports certain media types like 720p for instance, that most other phone CPUs can't handle as far as I am aware, certainly not the three models they offered me, anyway. I haven't tried this line of argument with them yet, but I think I might if my TG01 continues to play up.
Equivalent spec is supposed to mean 'as good if not better' and not 'something nearly as good'.
Find out what they will be prepared to offer you, but don't agree to it straight away unless you are sure you are getting a fair deal. I'd be very interested to hear from you what they say.
Cheers

well at half past 10 i got my new tg01, at half past 12 i had a mate phone me on my landline saying he couldnt get through to me and a little while after that ,the random restarts came back.
im gonna phone them this afternoon, it don't help i have flu and toothache so im gonna play the pity card and see what they can do.
just out of interest if i say i have bad eyes and only got the tg01 because of the huge screen, would that help sway them towards a hd2?
but im quite tempted by the hero, yeah its a slower phone, and the screen is a tad smaller but its quite usable with android

well i made the call to orange, after 5 minutes of "hello?" "hello" Can you hear me?" "hello", i finally spoke to a person who can hear me.
they asked for a brand to get a replacement from, i chose htc,
so my choices are now :-
htc hero (if i cant get a desire)
htc desire (i wish)
htc tattoo ink (nope)
im awaiting a phone call to let me know my choices and will let you know how it goes.
i think i may be leaving the tg01 section of the forums
its been a fun ride

The Hero, worth purchasing?

I am selling my iPhone right now to buy a hero locally for $250. Im jumping on the deal, because I love the phone, android and everything.
The only thing I don't like is the fact that I wont be able to use my 3G with AT&T.
Is EDGE going to be painfully slow on the Hero?
Should I not buy the 100, and try to buy a 300?
Because there's no way in hell I'm going to get one for this price!

Edge is painfully slow compared to 3g once you have experienced it.
I got the phone today. I've been using EDGE, and AT&T isn't that bad at all. Things seem fine. I'm sure 3G would be faster, but for now I don't mind at all.
let us know.. what u think between..
the phones
and the data speeds.
BTW: welcome to android
I'm going to buy a new mobile phone...
I had in mind HTC Hero and Motorola Milestone...
For now I use E71, but I'm looking to change OS (from Symbian to Android)
But, I can't make up my mind...
HTC Hero would be cheaper (Moto Milestone would cost more)
But, realy, I need your help, to tell me witch phone is better...
witch would you recomend?
hero is an awesome phone. i have been using it for last 5 months. but the problem is that developers are abandoning hero for nexus one. many modders have already bought nexus one and have stopped working on hero anymore and its quite logicla that why they will develop roms for an older phone while they have a pone with 1 ghz processor. as said developement of hero roms, themes, apps have become pretty slow for last 1-1.5 months and it will become worse. so right now buying hero isnt a very good idea in my honest opinion. better buy nexus one which is all interested in. cheers
Hero is an excellent phone. However, I'd personally go for the Nexus One right now.
I'll be developing for the Hero until this time next year, when my contract runs out
Update on my Hero.
I enjoy this phone much much more than my iPhone. Multitasking, customization, everything I wished I could do on my iPhone I can now do with my Hero.
The EDGE speed sometimes gets to me, such as when downloading applications. 3G is definitely faster, but the difference isn't so much that I regret my decision.
As for people updating and developing new Hero roms, I don't see why every dev would switch to the Nexus one. Yes, it's better, but I'm sure they understand that not everyone has a Nexus one. It would make no sense to just develop Nexus roms.\
I love everything about the Hero. I have the European version, so I have the chin, which I really like. I like having physical buttons on the outside too!

The vast majority of developers will likely only develop for phones they currently have/use. If a Hero developer buys a Nexus, there is a strong possibility that they would abandon support for the Hero, because they have little incentive to do so.
There are exceptions of course - Paul @ MoDaCo still supports the Hero even though he has a Nexus, but the speed of his releases has definitely slowed. However, this may be due to the fact that there is little new material out there to work with.

Dave
THX.
but, is it better to buy Milstone or Hero now??
If I were you, I'd buy neither - I'd get a HTC Desire when it is released in the next couple of months.

Dave

[Q] Should I buy HD2?

I am in a purchasing dilemma since my Diamond died. I have HD2, Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire in my list.
Let me try to write what I have in mind. Pardon me if I offended anyone but these are purely my opinion.
Looks: HD2 has the sleekest design, Samsung Galaxy S isn't bad either but I don't like the curved corners in HTC Desire.
Winner: HD2
Screen: SGS has 4" S-AMOLED. HD2 doesn't but has got 4.3" gorgeous display. HTC Desire is somewhat in the middle, offering 3.7" SLCD.
Winner: SGS. Runnerup: HD2
Camera flash: SGS doesn't have a flash. I assume HD2 has a better dual LED flash than Desire.
Winner: HD2
OS: This part is what I hate and largely contributes to my dilemma. SGS and HTC Desire runs on Android natively, which I think these devices have a long time to be developed before they become obsolete. HTC Desire may have a leading edge compared to SGS because HTC devices have a great amount of developers working on it. HD2 is capable of running Android but its fundamental operating system is WM 6.5, which soon may become obsolete.
Winner: HTC Desire
Graphic performance: SGS has a better GPU than HTC Desire and HD2. I also wonder if the poorly implemented GPU driver in HD2 would hinder progress in future Android builds such as Gingerbread.
Winner: SGS
Price: SGS>Desire>HD2 in my country. HD2 wins.
Guys, help me decide. I could have waited for WP7 devices IF my Diamond did not unexpectedly give up, but I don't have a choice but to grab a phone now. Which device should I go for? Or could I have overlooked any potential models?
nice review but which uses u do with ur phone that what important
I use my phone for browsing, instant messaging and GPS. I prefer phones which I can modify its software to fit my needs, for example, ROM cooking. I am leaning towards Android, I have been using WM for too long and I'm a little bored with it.
....ive been a user of HD2 for the past year nd honestly.....i couldnt stand the msgng client in it! it just is plain frustrating........also from the momnet u buy the hd2 u cant but start installing stuff to change the whole phone experience!........same thng with my previous diamond 2!
i bought a SGS nd so far have been very impressed.....no lags.......no restarts........however i miss wm apps.......you have open source apps for wm which span all categories nd most are free or cracked.......android is still new but has potential if you bear the wait.......for ex you can't find a decent battery/clock/weather widget for your homescreen!!!! ..........already am looking forward for windows phone...........but i guess android it is for now.
As for SGS vs Desire, well to tell u the truth, i became very doubtful abt HTC support services...........they never target the right issues! they're just too lame......
If you happen to have any spare phone (smart or not) lying around then I'd suggest you use that phone until WP7 phones come out. They are coming really soon and you should give them a chance to be considered. You might regret if you buy a phone now and a month later a WP7 phone comes out with features that you really really like.
Well, Just my opinion - that's what I'd do anyway if I was in your situation. In any case, good luck with your decision

I am using HD2 and i'm very happy with it. If you wanna go HD2, be alarmed that the stock ROM from HTC won't be a satisfactory user experience. I would advise you to look for a custom ROM, that fulfills your user needs (battery power absorbtion, eye candy, crashing,...)
After that you get almost unlimited customisation ability. On the other side, HD2 won't gen any major official customer support, so if you are o.k. with that, there's no other trendemous downside.
One other thing...
if you are a regular customer, who prefers simplicity and no customization (iPhone), this is probably not suited for you
Sent from my HD2
downside if you get the hd2 is that, i doubt htc will release any further official updates for it however look how much this forum has to offer in regards with cooked roms, android port or eventually wm7 port(hopefully) but its fundamental o/s is pretty dire without the enhancements ie battery life and frezzing up ..your stated you been using windows o/s so in a way you know what to expect from a windows phone i havnt tried the desire but reviews are pretty sound..played with the sgs very briefly thought android alot smoother, i love the voice recognition aspect of it eg on goggle if you speak to it, it will fill in the google search field for you, i was impressed! personally i would hold on until the rumoured hd3 or hd7 comes out this year
I think you should buy a cheap replacement at for now. Since WP7 I think will be released soon(I hope), you can wait for it. Anyway in case you won't like WP7, you can still get the HD2(over SGS and Desire) and I think it will be lot cheaper but great overall.
I bought HD2 some time before Desire release.. I also was stuck a long time don't know if to wait or buy.. Then I sold it while Galaxy S hit the store cause I got good money for it.. Then I had the chance, Galaxy S or HD2 again.. I bought HD2 again and didn't regret it..
If I look at the price and the possibilities the HD2 is the winner for me.. Also the quality and display is really good.. Android for me is ready for daily use (Bangster 1.2A Build), no need for NAND atm love the possibility switch between WinMo and Android.. WP7 is coming for shure and Ubuntu also =) But if you don't want to change OS then buy Android phone, I came from Palm to Windows Mobile years ago but I never got an experience like Android, best usability you can get in my opinion..
Only advantage I see with Samsung is the better GPU, but in Quadrant benchmark I get a much higher CPU score, so don't know which is better.. NFS Shift runs smooth though =)
I have to agree with the last 2 posts, came from a Mytouch andriod phone to the HD2. If it wasn't for the fact that I can sync up my calander and contacts from my outlook, this phone would be have been sold 1 day after I bought it. 3 apps on the crappy windows market also make the phone ok. Being able to put different roms helps, but it really only changes screens around, it still runs on crappy windows
But if I had my choice I would have stayed with my Mytouch and spent $275 on a newer andriod phone then this POS.
Great replies. I've decided to go for Samsung Galaxy S. Cheers~

[Q] What next after Hero??

So... It looks as though Hero development may end with Gingerbread (2.3). Honeycomb (3.0) looks very tablet orientated and some devs are already stating it may be hard to port it.
My question is, after the resilient little Hero, what would be the next best handset to move to? A lot of people have mentioned the Desire HD or the Desire Z, but I'd like to hear from you guys, what do you think?
Update: I prefer a HTC handset myself, but which would be a good one to move to for the next set of decent ROMs??
I also believe, that after getting fully operational 2.3 with 2.6.35 kernel it will be pretty much it
Contracts are ending (I have one more year to go), developers are moving to other projects.
I hope that we will have one day "[GPL][2.3][2.6.35]Final Rom for hero".
After hero? Well, perhaps some crazy samsung device (although their quality isn't as good as HTC). I'm sure I'll stick with android, one of the best choices ever made
cheers!
I'll keep my Hero until a Tegra 2 device is realeased
I'm going to hang on to my hero for as long as possible... But I'm starting to think the Nexus S might be the next decent handset to move to, no-ones started developing ROMs yet though... Although I did notice Cyanogen had created a thread in his forum for it
I think 2.3 is maximum for Hero. Honeycomb is likely their requirements opportunities Hero.

I have to admit, this looks like the root (sorry!) I'm most likely to take.
The Nexus S seems to be a decent choice
But after putting froyo on my hero for the first time and seeing how fast it became, I think I can wait for the next reference phone
Hopefully, the next one will have a full RGB AMOLED instead of the Pentile PoS on the current Nexus S
On my next phone I'm looking for:
Tegra 2 or similar, perhaps dual core hummingbird with dedicated gpu
300+ dpi RGB AMOLED screen
Proper capacitative multitouch
Hard buttons
NO FINGERPRINT MAGNET, minimal gloss&plastic, good materials
In any case, would Honeycomb be for tablets? I assumed that honeycomb won't come to phones

yep, same hear, dual core is the way forward.
I plan to run the hero, cancel my TMO contract and get a giffgaff PAYG sim until a decent Tegra2 (preferrably HTC!) comes to the market.
not sure if i'd go back on contract or stick with giffgaff...i'll see how they perform, then buy the handset sim free (ouch?!?)

personally, i think there will be a version of Honeycomb for phones, when the dual core handsets become more readily available. maybe a 'cut down' version.
i have Hero for like 8 months now. Pretty good phone, but still a little bit slow, only compared to other smartphones (but as a phone, it is great).
But yesterday i bought SGS.
for my girlfriend. i hate world

it depends on your needs i think. if you're flashjunky like me our hero will end soon i think because the processors won't be enough soon.
and also be careful about screen, only desire (not z nor hd) has amoled screen. so for better screen sharpness, you may get desire for now. and also it gets great scores

It's looking like a HTC Desire at the moment. I was told to avoid the Desire and go for a Desire HD or Desire Z. Not sure why though, the Desire is the only one of the three with an AMOLED display...
I've had the Hero for just over a year now, and honestly, jailbreaking it has given it a new lease of life. That said though, it's definitely not gonna get 3.0 by the looks of things, and I'd rather not get left behind in terms of software updates. I will likely get an HTC or a Samsung; both companies make good hardware that's pretty powerful. I have considered buying a Nexus S outright, but it's kinda beyond my budget right now...

Completely agree with you. I bought a Hero when my iPhone went t*ts up.
But my concern was that the newer versions of Android are going to require faster hardware and there will come a point where the Hero just won't be able to cut it anymore. So what's the next best handset to go up to? At the moment a HTC Desire
Well, it's looking like either Nexus S, or Desire for me =P

[Q] Mozart or not?

Hello all,
I have grabbed a deal on ebay for a brand new htc 7 mozart for 205 GBP.. the phone is locked to orange uk (i intend to unlock it).. is there any cons I should know about this phone? pls advice me asap!
Thanks!
Biggest cons for me:
Xenon flash obviously doesnt work when shooting video
Slippery as hell (look at my other topic about dropping it. I dropped this phone more than 10 other phones I owned)
Touch buttons for search/home/back suck. I dont know how often I already hit the touch search button and had to think of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GM4Lt5k24s
lol!! thx for the comment! so, do you think I should close the deal for that price or it doesn't worth the money? I wouldn't buy it for 400+ GBP that orange sells it, but for the half money I might do!
it is a good phone carmello, especially for that price. i'm using mozart over 2 months and (from hardware perspective) can't really blame it. whether or not wp7 will fit your needs/tastes is a different question...
basically if you feel confident getting a wp7 phone or want to give it a try in any case then mozart is a solid choice.
I am a pretty confident with wp7 because I've tried it before on my bricked focus! my concerns rely on htc's quality.. for me wp7 with nodo serves all my needs as what I seek is some time-wasting games (really liked xbox live), fast internet navigation, gps, office and some usefull apps.. and smoothness first of all! won't be a problem I guess to flash it with nodo as I read from other posts, right?
Cheers guys, appreciate it!
for less than 200 GBP I can find a new optimus 7 as well.. shall I choose that instead of mozart? any advice? pls?!

Even though the Xenon flash means you cant record video with light I would still go for the mozart above all phones for:
Looks, the body is sexy
Cam: 8Mpix instead of 5 and Xenon flash is great for pics (example) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22045001/mozpic.jpg
Uniqueness -> You will hardly see anyone else with a mozart.
I would really suggest a good casing/cover/pouch though cuz im not kidding when I say its slippery, specially if you have dry hands (which I do)
I've had the Mozart since January, and imo it's an excellent little phone =)
I agree with the others, I have dropped it quite a few times already, but so far not even a scratch so it's pretty resilient!
One bonus of the Mozart is that you can upgrade the memory on it (have already fitted one with a 16gb card, will be putting a 32gb card in mine once hardware warranty has expired!) but can be a bit fiddly...
Only bad point I've found is it has a tendency to freeze, or simply lose sound until I turn off and on again! If it freezes, only option sometimes is to pop the battery out for a minute or two...
But, this seems to be happening less with NoDo, so hopefully with more updates it will become even more stable =D
Sent from my now unlocked 7 Mozart using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I'd go with the Mozart. It has gorgeous looks and the camera is quite excellent. The Optimus seems to be a more popular phone but I think it feels awkward in the hand.
I agree that the Mozart is a bit slippery and I have dropped it loads of times and it is still in one piece unlike some of my friends iphones.
The only downside in my opinion is the screen, it has good viewing angles but has some colour banding. Not sure of the screen quality of the Optimus so can't compare them.
already got the mozart in my hands.. its really beautiful and not regretting it at all (not yet at least!), and it only cost me 171 GBP from ebay! I gues this thread might close now! thanks everyone for your help! really appreciate it!
btw, I had unlocked it so I can use an O2 sim card on it and connected it to zune twice so I got instantly the feb and march updates without any chevron unlocks or whatsoever!
You can get the mozart from cex for £195 with a years warranty
http://uk.webuy.com/search/index.php?stext=htc+mozart&ispostback=1&mode=buy
I paid £166 BNIB! that's a deal i think! Point is to be satisfied and cert ainly I am with my Mozart!
Sent from my 7 Mozart using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
If you plan to use your phone as a music player, Mozart is arguably your choice over Optimus. And, as weird as it sounds, HTC is better than even Samsung in this area, while LG is subpar. I'm talking about WP7 devices here, obviously, not in general.
im so dumb i had to find out the meaning of subpar, typically state school education

[Q] H1X+ or H8X WP????

hi!
I've just sold my One X ( with which I was more then satisfied ) because I have to renew my contract so i'm in sweet dillema, which should i go for:
htc one x+ or windows phone 8x?
i've read almoust every test and rewiev there is but still can't make a decision...
unfortunatly I cant test myself the phones cuz there are none displayed where i live and one x+ is yet to be added to my operator's list...so no luck there. i'm very skeptical bout wp8 but also very much drown to it cuz it's something new... damn...hate when having so much to choose from =)
i should mention that with a wp8x i get beats earphones for free and that it's nerely 100$ cheeper than oneX+...
can you share your thoughts??
would apreciate it much.
and sorry for my bad english, i'm not using my phone here, just an lap =)

8x has worse battery life than the one x+ wp8 drains battery like crazy. You're getting a bigger display for the One x+ and a lot more power. Android jelly bean is better than wp8 in my opinion. Windows phone is definitely getting there but it's still not quite there yet and the devs of windows phone 8 said they didn't have time to make a notification centre! I wouldn't want to use an OS where they didn't have time to include such an important feature. In terms of hardware both phones are fantastic so it's really android or wp8 for you to chose between.
I purchased a Nokia 920 on the day of release.
It is a remarkable device. Very smooth, fast, easy to use.
I returned it 6 days later for the HTC one x+.
The Nokia 920 is also very much an iPhone with a Windows logo. Customization is extremely limited.
In the end it was a bunch of small quibbles with WP8, rather than any one particular thing.
There is no replacement for the media player, they are all basically the stock player re-skinned, and the stock player is a cludge.
There is no customization of the calendar tile, you get what windows thinks you should get.
There is no customization of the keyboard.
Can not root the phone to enable tethering - big issue for those of us with unlimited data.
So two of the most important productivity elements, and my primary entertainment element are inferior. Not bad, just inferior.
My one x+ has everything my HTC Inspire had, and more. It is also feels thinner and lighter than the 920 (not sure if either is true, just feels this way).
Android has matured a great deal, and has really come into its own place with 4.0.
Windows seems to be competing with iOS, and will be playing a losing game trying to catch up because iOS is seriously polished.
If you loved you old Android, you will love the one x+, and like the WP8 phone.
If you ever wanted a WP, get a Nokia. Before my Amaze, I was (still am) a Nokia fanboy for 11 years.
If you want an Android phone, I would say the HOX+ is one of the best out.
Personally, I prefer Android over WP due to limit access of the phone.
thnx for your advices... well im all android =) but you have to admit that 8x is just beautiful... last nokia i had was n97mini and i had her less than a month and then bought my first android phone DHD and from then only one OS is for me... i gues i had a doubts cuz it was htc made phone...but i believe i'll go for h1x+... at least, all you guys are here =)
