Transcend 8GB SDHC MicroSD: Thoughts? Experiences? - G1 Accessories

Has anyone had any experience with this tech? I searched and see a lot of posts about it's application in Windows Mobile (eww, that left a vomit taste in my mouth, errr fingers...) but not so much for Linux/Android based stuff.
Weigh in, will ya?

Um, if you look there are many posts with people using a 16gb MicroSDHC card. This will work fine for you, just make sure it is class 6 or higher. I have a class 2 and it works fine, but I'm sure there is a slowdown for me.

No, I am specifically asking about this particular brand of 8GB Class 6. I have seen some brands of media not work particularly well for this sort of thing.
I am fully aware that there are functional 16GB Class 6 cards out there that work, and threads talking about them. That is NOT what this thread was about. If English isn't your primary language, my bad, otherwise, read a post before you tell someone to go looking for the tons of threads that have nothing to do with the question.

I understand what you're asking - and no, I have no personal experience with it and cannot inform you if it's bad or good.
However, I use a TopRam 8gb Class 6 and it was only about 20 dollars (same prices) on eBay, free shipping, and received it in the mail in about 3 days. It works really well, and I have never had any problems with it.
Also, you said you seen your card on all Windows Mobile forums. I don't see how this really matters, but you wanted to know about Linux/Android and my TopRam does just fine with both.
Sorry I couldn't help you on the original question. =[

I use Transcend.
Great company. Just buy it from Newegg, if anything goes wrong, their quick to make you happy.
I had one go bad... not sure what it was, could've been my fault... either case, called them up and they shipped out another one. Didn't even want the old one back.
BTW, that was 1 month into having it... I'm on a year with this one running swap, an EXT3 and FAT32

I too use the 8g class 6 card, only had it for a few months, but so far its good. Unsure on the speed of the class 6, as its all I've used. But its a good company, with a good reasonably priced product. I'll vouch for them.

Dear illiterate jack,
Firstly, where, in your original post and thread title, do you ask specifically about class 6 cards? There's not one mention of them. You listed a brand, size, type, etc but nothing about class 6 cards. So, please forgive tekkitan if he/she couldn't read your mind and know exactly what you meant.
Secondly, does your need for attention really outweigh logic? There's hundreds of reviews for this exact microSD card on Amazon and other websites, and quite a bit specifically name Android.
Thirdly, before you state "i just wanted a discussion, y0", please remember this: a majority of the time (especially now that xda has become tech support), someone may have had a similar question or problem and may have asked it. If you had searched for "class 6, 8gb" in this very area of the forum you'd have received sixteen other threads discussing this very topic primarily on Android (two threads specifically discussing Transcend 8gb class6 microSD cards, and one post where a user directly states that "I'm currently using Transcend 8GB Class 6, no problems so far".
So, next time, instead of insulting other people because they did not know exactly what you were asking, look back at your original post and ask yourself, "Have I made clear exactly what I'm asking?", "Could someone else have asked this before me?" and finally, "Will my replies make me sound like a prick?".
Now, to answer your question: I have used this specific card (great deal on Amazon, BTW) on the Dream, Passion, and Xperia X10 (stock as well as rooted). Compared to my Sandisk Class2, the difference is dramatic. There were no technical issues in my experience.
Yours truly,
sblmnl

Please be respectful to other members. tekkitan, or any one of us, after reading your first post, would have had no idea you wanted opinions on a class6 card. I will keep an eye on this thread.

I have working a 4Gb MicroSDHC, and it's incredible how fast goes.
I'm in love with my card...
as i know, theoretical maximum for SDHC is 2tb,
practical maximum is 8gb for microsd card , may be it will increase to 16gb in future

fritsypeij who you think you are? I know I've made a mistake but see two things:
- First, you are not a moderator, administrator, you are not even a Senior Member
- Second, there are very ways to says "things", but, in this forum, you should not be rude and innapropriate. If you want to "fight" me, just send PM.
So, if you think there's something wrong and I should not participate in this forum, use the REPORT button (that button is there for something) and give the word for who (and should) can handle this kind of situations, who definitely is not you.

So again, sorry Tiago for bashing you.

How come only 2.49GB is left if this thing has 8GB ?

Am I missing something here?
I believe that the Thunderbolt only actually has 4 GB. The 8 was falsely spread information. And then some of that is taken up by the stock data to run the Thunderbolt.

haha, I'm not sure I would call that "best discussion" but the answer is buried in that painful *****ing:
Current word in the dev circles is that the device does in fact have 8GB of internal eMMC, but has been partitioned to use a faster/more reliable configuration, called SLC, which results in a practical capacity/density of 4GB of user space, with about 1.5 GB of bloatware installed.
More information on understanding eMMC accessible storage: See here - http://tjworld.net/wiki/Android/HTC/EMMC/UnderstandingUserCapacity/
More information on previous uses of SLC in HTC devices: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#The_Missing_2GB
Is this confusing for an average consumer? Yes.
Is this worth complaining about? Sure, but everyone with this phone still has at least 1 week to decide they don't want it so I don't think anyone is 'owed' anything. At most you might be able to get out of the $35 activation fee, if you were charged one (and most of us with a business discount likely weren't).
Did HTC and/or Verizon lie about specs? Not if the above is true. (Think of a PC manufacturer selling a business class system with 2x640GB HDDs configured in RAID 1. Does it say 2x640GB, yes, is that accurate, yes, is there 1280GB of user accessible storage, no, since RAID 1 mirrors all data 2x for increased reliability.)
Click to collapse
Ultimately, the RAID 1 array analogy works perfectly here. If somebody sells you a RAID array with 2x640GB drives, how much usable storage will you have? Well, the answer is "It depends on how the RAID array is configured." This is the same thing with eMMC. How much storage will you have available? It depends on how it's configured. Just so happens that we get the "RAID1" configuration of eMMC for speed and reliability. They have to configure the eMMC somehow, so how should they do it? The unfortunate thing about eMMC is that once it's configured, it's not reversable (like a RAID array might be).
This is the nature of eMMC. If you buy a product with eMMC, then to determine how much storage you have available, you should ask, "How is it configured?" just like you would if you bought a RAIDed storage unit. Otherwise, you are buying a product you don't understand and you very well may be surprised by what you get.

[Q] Upgrading primary SD card

I've been reading about upgrading the 2gb SD card that comes installed in the Streak. Apparently there are two potential benefits of this.
1) A larger card of which the extra space can be used as storage for media, etc. The problem I have with this is that it appears to involve some serious jumping through of hoops to make it work and it doesn't seem to always work. In other words, it is very easy to screw up.
2) Faster card to improve performance.
Has anyone tried this and have any feedback on whether it has had any effect on overall smoothness or stability?
I'm going to be replacing my screen soon so while I have the Streak open it would be a good time to replace it if there is anything to gain. From what I have seen so far, it doesn't seem worth the trouble, but if anyone has evidence to the contrary, please speak up.

When you create the title for a new thread it does an auto search. I think the title of this thread is a pretty reasonable search topic. The auto-search gave me nothing useful. Yes, I did bother to look at what it brought up. One title looked promising. I read it. It didn't help.
Besides, if you read the post, I obviously have read threads on the topic. Did you think I just created my opinion from whole cloth?
I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has good reason to think it is worth doing, because at this point I don't believe it is, but since the phone will be opened up soon, if that opinion is mistaken I would like to know about it so I won't miss out on a worthwhile hardware mod.
IF you had done a search for INTERNAL sd card you would have gotten all the answers you need.
So while I am here I will mention that in MY opinion it was well worth it, although I took the simple route and just cut a small bit of plastic that retains my internal card to replace it with the 4GB class 10.
Access to and from the card is greatly improved. What is in your Streak is a class 2 card which will read at about 8-10 MB/s and write at about 4 MB/s, on good days. Real world, knock a couple MB/s off each.
The Class 10 4GB, read speed 16-20MB/s consistent and write between 9-11MB/s, so do the math.
True, under normal conditions it may not seem as much, but I work with a lot of photos and documents out on the road with my phone. The time it took to replace the card has been saved countless times, and for me time is money.

[Q] was your SD Card ruined?

I was one of the people who has their SD eaten by EC09 leak.
But now it seems to have spread to other Roms....
A trend that i noticed was all the people i saw had the original SD card made by Samsung.
On a another board i was told to "READ MORE" and well i did AND i haven't found anyone that that had a non-Samsung card get ruined.
So that is what i am asking you now....
IF you had your card ruined leave me the brand.
Sometimes it is the answer staring you in the face

OK post #18 is indeed a the only proof of this brought to my attention, and i do thank you!
BUT IF YOU ACTUALLY READ POST #85 [a mere 4 posts above mine] "I have a Kinston Class 4 8GB and haven't had any problems yet"

I really wish people would stop jumping down peoples throats who actually try to think differently and help the situation. I hate people that answer with "Read More" that is not constructive or helpful!
We are all human and people do misread things but it is no reason to belittle that person when you your self do nothing to help the situation.

As I explicitly said, the case is "quoted" four posts before yours. To be specific it says "I am using a cheap RiData bran 16gb Class 6 sd card...had it corrupt twice while on newer CM7 builds". I'm sorry that you feel people are jumping down your throat, but when you don't read the first two pages of a thread, and miss information in a post just a few before yours, well the only thing to say to you is "Read". What else would you have people say when the information is clearly there before you but you claim to not see it?
I applaud your zeal for helping on this problem, but reading about it is the first step. It took me just 15 minutes scanning the thread containing your post to come up with two examples. You need to do a more careful and thorough job of reading. If you can't see the data that is before you, there is no chance of helpfully interpreting it, however motivated you may be.

please take this as an intelligent conversation, that being said.
What should have been said to be helpful and constructive would be something along the line of.
Non-Samsung cards are being ruined, i have even seen a few mentions in this thread.
and that is it, the issue would have moved on from there.
In my original post I even said i was skimming the posts and i couldn't find any and I asked if anyone knew of any one that had Non SD cards ruined.
Its not like i was asking a crazy question and that was answered in the OP.
It was a simple question and to answer with the classic "read more" does nothing for the post that is my main point.
as now my question has been answered and i will now drop this, All i am saying is telling people to read more does not help the situation. You can say read more but at least answer the question.
Just imagine if JT or any of the other Devs treated everyone like that....They dont, most times they answer your questions or offer extra help in IRC.... the open source community is built on the ground work of helping others, not an elitist attitude.

The response you got in the next post said essentially that (in addition to recommending that you read more.) Your reaction was to contradict that post in all caps saying "EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT HAS REPORTED AN ISSUE ON THIS THREAD HAD THE ORIGINAL SAMSUNG SDCARD RUINED" which we've already seen wasn't true. You basically just tried to yell down the post which didn't agree with your opinion.
I understand missing obvious information, we all do that from time to time. But when someone says you've missed information and suggests that you read more, yelling at them about how right you are isn't an appropriate response. Suggesting that someone read more, while also providing a brief informative response was entirely appropriate. Your reaction to that was not. If you want to advocate intelligent, civil discussion, you should begin by ensuring that your own comments are well-grounded and civil.
ok i do see i flew off the handle on this one point but i felt attacked for asking a simple question.
my post:
-------------------
i have only been reading a few of the posts but has anyone with a Non-Samsung SD Card get borked?
I lost my original on EC09 and have a PNY 16gb and have had no trouble but i reverted back to EF, i dont want to have to go get a new 16 again!
Maybe it is the Samsung cards not the roms.....
________________
the response:
------------------
no offense whofarted - but read some more.
This is definitely not an issue with a particular card brand. We've seen bad behavior on lots of cards now - not all Samsung.
Something is awry, and we need to let the devs get to the bottom of it.[cut short]....
----------------------
I admitted I didnt read every single post, I was seeing a trend and thought i would ask. instead of reading hundreds of posts [on multiple threads]
It was a simple question that wasn't that far fetched.
I never said that the cards WERE an issue just that we maybe keep it in mind [at least that was my intentions]
The question was: has anyone with a Non-Samsung SD Card get borked?
how about: @ whofarted i have seen a few posts with non samsung cards get ruined.that answers the question, not "read".
He did infact in his post answer my question, but by adding the first part of his post, it in all intent and purpose was to belittle the question.
I always hated in forums when people respond with the phrase read more.
but what set it over the edge [for me] was the, let the devs get to the bottom of it. which missed the purpose of the thread entirely. The thread was there to collect information and [i felt] interpreting the data collected. then to tell some one to [i felt] "butt out" was very "offensive" which was preceded with a "no offense". lol any time someone says no offense, it is always followed by something that doesnt need to be said. I think that was what sent me over the edge.
I truly apologize for my overreaction
please just remember there is always someone out there who knows more than you do!

I thought my card was done after opening camera app and snapping a pic. However, all of music, downloads, etc were still there
confirmed by root explorer. Gallery showed insert SD card and camera app was now useless. Changed SD card mounting from R/O to R/W and can now use SD card. Can only hope that it sticks...

I just had my Droid X's original class 2 16gb micro sd card die, with no hope of recovery. Have been using CM7 nightlies. It died while trying to download Angry Birds Rio from the Amazon App Store.

Looked up on google, newegg shows it as a samsung.
The card is recognized as existing by Windows 7, but isn't useful beyond that.
Can't be formatted.
Loaded up gParted LiveCD to see if anything could be done, gParted runs for 10 minutes throwing errors about the card every 15 seconds and finally the monitor turns off and I can't see what's going on. Unplugged the micro SD and gParted booted right up.
I've been all over the internet and it appears the only solution at this point COULD be melting off the plastic, desoldering the memory chip and resoldering it on to another chip, but that sounds crazy. Any ideas?
Buy a new sd card...class 6 or higher no bigger than 16gb and be done. you can get a pny class 10 8gb for 12.99

[Q] Does Galaxy Tab 10.1 have microSD slot? (mixed answers?)

I need a definitive answer. I have read from various sources on the web that say some models have microSD and some don't.
Does any released version really have an microSD slot in it?
I have got 3g version and doesnt have a micro sd as I reviewd all variant spec none of them have a micro sd
Well according to gizmodo or even samsung press release, the Tab 750/730 which are the indian versions seem to have microsd slot on the top side. Can someone confirm this?
The 750 (10.1) does not have an sd slot. The 730 (8.9) will have one.

I can't believe you guys automatically assume that I didn't research on this topic before I came here. I am not lazy and am no idiot. I did extensive research to try to find variants of the model and I did find many clues on some websites that indicated the Tab at a certain point in the design stage did have an microsd slot, and I just wanted to see if it was actually implemented in any released model worldwide... I even found engadget have pictures of the unit with a slot in it. Here's a source: quote "Both tablets have microSD slots, 3.5mm headphone jacks, and SIM slots, although there will be WiFi versions of both of them" engadget[dot]com/2011/03/22/samsung-galaxy-tab-8-9-and-new-galaxy-tab-10-1-thinner-than-the/
Please do not insult other members until you are certain of your claims. I'm a mechanical design engineer myself working in the automation industry, and from what i can tell the unit is capable of having the slot but it seems samsung pulled it out of the design purposely (probably to save for future models, kind of like Apple's strategy). I have been a rouge member on these forums for almost 5 years, and I wouldn't have even posted if this question wasn't very important to me and it was a last resort after I couldn't confirm the answer from my research. Also I look beyond the first few pages of obvious answers on google. I dig deep to find my answers.
