Hi, I just ordered a replacement phone for my recently passed away Eris. But I was going to ask you what I should install on my rooted replacement phone if it's 1.5? Any ideas welcome. (I want to try Evil Eris)

Try them all and figure out which works best for you. Thats what I did, ended up sticking with EE though, you'll probably like it.

So I've ran into a new issue. Just got my replacement phone from VZW, the trackball quit on my old one, and it came with 2.1 already installed. I didn't think much about it until I went to root the phone.
I've tried the first edition PB00IMG.zip and the more recent link from Ivan on XDA and with both files, when I boot the phone holding vol dn and end, I get the following error msg:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<Action> Yes
I've also tried the MR2 RUU downgrade method, but it failed too. Anyone have any ideas on how to root the phone?

Sorry dude, you can't root. you now have the same problem as the people with the leak versions. The boot loader on your phone of higher than the one on the root rom.
Verizon has been sending some replacement phones that have the "wrong" HBOOT on them and users aren't able to root. Sounds like you got one too...
Was this shipped to you or an in-store exchange ? Seems to me that stores might have older, non-updated phones in stock, but I could be wrong.
It was shipped, go figure. So there's no way around it? :[
Not with that phone. Same problem people (who installed a leak) have been having for many, many weeks now...
Do you think its possible that since so many leakers have swapped their phones like scum bags that verizon is refurbing them and not flashing them back to stock?

If we can't get them back to stock bootloaders, no one can

Its not "Wrong," HBoot 1.49 is just what Verizon is shipping all of their New Eris's with. Check the latest Verizon RUU that Conflipper released

spencer, technically, verizon and htc, and probably even google can return the phones back to whatever version they want, its just a matter of if they want to make the ROM and bootloader that will allow that.
And of course, they are not going to willingly do that for us, since that allows us to root the phone, which they dont want. they would rather have us keep the phones on an unrootable version.
That sucks dude. Strange enough my trackball on my eris is not working in one direction but I guess I'll just get use to it since I love root.
I loved having root too, looks like I'm up s***creek without a paddle though.
Damn that sucks man!!!!! Mine were shiped overnight from Texas and both had 1.5. Crap luck man. Just pray your trackball goes out again and it probably will.
I need to send my wife's phone back to verizon. I need to unroot it and get it back to stock before I return it. Is running the Verizon RUU all I need to do to get the phone back to legit? I didn't know if that wipes out the bootloader and everything?
Any input is appreciated.

Yes, it replaces the bootloader, the radio (with a slightly older version than the 7/17 OTA), and the /system, /data, recovery, and boot partitions. You might find that after you do this it will immediately inform you that an update is available (the 7/17 OTA).
That should be sufficient. Highly, highly unlikely that VZW is going to put a crack team of computer forensic scientists "on the case" to investigate your phone. There have been folks who reported (either here or over on AF, I can't remember) that they had returned multiple rooted phones, without making any effort whatsoever to clean them up - and not a peep out of Big Red.

Thank you both for your input.
Her phone is the trackball too...I was really hoping they would come off a different model since this will be her third Eris. Maybe the inevitable next time

If it happens again I would start getting ugly with Verizon and say something like "if you guys can't send me an eris that will work properly then I want a different phone that works." Usually if you complain enough or threaten to go to a competitor they will do something for you.

I flashed the official 2.1 ruu and it flashed my phone to 100% stock. Bootloader, recovery, etc. Got the update notice for the Mr4 so I'm all good now.

Panic much? There's actually a thread here on xda that links a flash tool from HTC to remove root/etc. I'll see if I can find it, but you should search as well.
You'll find how to return to stock if you search these forums...
It will be easier to help you if you would explain exactly what you did up until you lost the ability to use your touchscreen.

Make sure you've installed the Android SDK USB drivers as well.

Easy. Boot into fastboot, then flash the shipping software from winxp. Have the HTC sync drivers installed, but htc sync stopped. It works.

I have an HTC Aria (well, wifey does) whose screen randomly quits working. I think it may have to do with the battery, as troubleshooting suggests that possibility, and a totally full charge seems to help (where-as it may not work at 80%). Anyway, doing what I can to mitigate it while I get a replacement unit. Although it is under manufacturer warranty, I'm scared to send it in to them, as you get charged so much if they find it to have violated warranty in any way (e.g. water damage or something). Almost cheaper just to buy a used one on eBay.
Send me your email and I can send you the stock 2.1 recover that breaks the root. Its what I used to return my first aria. Just make sure to backup all your data on your computer. Change the SD card also or back it up on your computer and delete everything on it if your sending it to HTC. I must warn though your replacement might contain the new hboot which their is no root for as of know.
P.S. my touchscreen failed because of the phones high temperatures mainly in the 105-110° F.
Signatures are fancy.
This phone has never been rooted, so no worries in my case. The OP may be different, I kind of jumped in here. I fear instead one particular water sticker, that, while white, is slightly torn (somehow). So... I mean, its like rolling dice.

pLs help me .. i have same problem with my HTC ARIA ..!!
how ur HTC started wOrking ?
Alright so while on the USB cable my phone has started to show the scrolling left issue. I don't really love that because I got one of those portable battery chargers for christmas. So what should I do, unroot and ask for a new eris (or possibly incredible) at my Verizon store? Or will my new eris have the same problem?
Thanks,
CPCookieMan
On another note, I may get the Incredible HD for my next phone. I would just be really mad if they were teasing a phone for ATT here.

I doubt that. Verizon already has LTE out an running; at&t does not, and I can't believe that they will by Thursday. And the fact that they mention "first to 4G again" suggests that it is not another Sprint WiMax phone.

The ad is so true. It's not my dream phone, (Obviously the eris. When I bought this thing I couldn't ask for more.) it's the one after that. Still does anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?

I know you're knowledgeable, so just ignore me if I'm suggesting anything you already know or have tried. Have you already tried jiggling (a little hard) any USB cable around while it's plugged in.
Also, I would try this without anything plugged into it: press harder on the trackball than usual and while pressing hard, roll it around in all the directions.
I've also heard suggested that turning it upside down and rolling the trackball around on a piece of paper can also help clean it, at least.
This may at least buy you some more time for you and that phone, or get you out of a jam when it starts action up again.
You could try to get a refurb, but as you already know, it may have the same problem eventually. If it did, or did right away, though, you might be able to convince them to give you a free upgrade to something else, and hopefully not take away from your next NE2 option.

To hedge your bets, I would recommend you install scary alien's v1.7.1 mod of Amon_RA's custom recovery - that way if the trackball goes out any further, you will have less hassles whether you unroot and return the phone, or continue to use it.
One in the hand is worth two in the bush!
If it's any consolation (misery loves company) I'll probably be where you are in a couple of months (no trackball issues yet, but my adb session drops sometimes if I move the phone while plugged in).

I had this exact same problem. After 3 replacements I yelled at the verizon reps till they agreed to give me a new phone. I don't know that you will get an incredible. They have been giving eris owners a droid 2, which is still leaps and bounds better than the eris, besides the locked bootloader (thanks motorola and your efuse...)

I strongly encourage people to be lazy, avoid knowledge at all cost, and ask questions that have been answered repeatedly. So yes, I'm sure it may or may not work.
